Conflicting claims and views on the priming of ammonium nitrate/fuel oil (ANFO) are reviewed; certain fallacies and misconceptions are rectified. Optimum priming systems for a range of blasthole conditions are indicated. Moves towards optimum priming lead to reductions in the combined cost of drilling, blasting and handling the material. With shallow blastholes, two-point priming is rarely warranted. Best blasting results from single priming are usually obtained when the primer is located near, but not at, the bottom of the blasthole. As blast- hole depth increases, two-point priming becomes more reliable and effective than single priming. For two-point priming, primers should be located such that detonation waves in the ANFO collide at grade level or, if preferred, within a hard band in the burden. Where blastholes are very deep and/or strata variations can be appreciable, three or more spaced primers are often justified. The effectiveness of a primer varies with its detonation pressure, diameter and length. Primer properties influence the velocity of detonation (VOD) near the primer, but do not affect the final (steady-state) VOD in the ANFO. A coal mine is proposed for an area where a major river traverses the project area. There were initial concerns that inflow of groundwater from exposures of high permeability alluvium associated with the river system could pose mine dewatering problems together with adverse impacts on surface water resources in the river. The project included collation and analysis of geological and hydrogeological data collected historically over a long period of project investigation and evaluation. The project also included establishment of additional groundwater monitoring points to provide a reliable groundwater contours. The groundwater level contours were produced to allow numerical models to be calibrated to support estimation of groundwater inflow. River bed cross sections were also prepared to assist study of the effect of river flow on the inflow. Two separate MODFLOW groundwater models were produced to simulate long-term groundwater inflow to the mine with an upper model consisting of the Quaternary and Tertiary alluvium lumped together and a lower, separate model consisting of Mesozoic coal measures. Analytical solutions were used to predict initial inflow from the alluvium and from the coal measures.

Cyanided tailings produced by gold processing operations may cause environmental problems, because they contain pollutants such as arsenic, sulfur and cyanide compounds. Moreover, tailings containing economic metals such as Au, Ag, Cu, Pb and Zn, are potentially valuable resources. In this article, cyanided tailings are catalytically oxidised by nitric acid in the presence of air or oxygen. The resulting solids may be leached to recover Au and Ag. The solution can be used to prepare ferric sulfate or iron pigment. Gases released in the reactions were recycled and reused by oxidation and absorption. All of these greatly improve metal recovery and the reuse prospects of cyanided tailings. Under the following conditions where the initial temperature of oxidation is 80¦C; initial concentration of nitric acid is 30 per cent (by weight); feed proportion (nitric acid to cyanide tailings mass ratio) is 3:1 and reaction time is two hours, the conversion ratio of cyanided tailings is 90.06 per cent. At the same time pyrite in the cyanided tailings is oxidised effectively, gold recovery is as high as 92.3 per cent and nitric acid loss per cycle is only five per cent because of NOx recovery.

Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASSM) offers lucrative employment opportunities to the locals of most developing countries. The major drawback of ASSM is its adverse impacts on the environment resulting from improper mining and processing techniques. Papua New Guinea (PNG) has very active ASSM activities. The artisanal and small-scale gold mining in PNG provide employment at local and national levels and the sector is an important source for inflow of foreign exchange into rural communities. However, small-scale mining activities are associated with sensitive health and environmental issues. The process of recovering gold by retorting and heating the amalgam over an open fire is a dangerous health practice. This paper discusses artisanal and small-scale gold mining operations in PNG and their impacts on the local environment.

The performance of 460 stope surfaces at WMC ResourcesÆ Olympic Dam Operation (ODO) has been used to investigate the confidence that can be placed in the Stability Graph Method for design of stope dimensions. A detailed database of stope performance and ground condition information was established for each stope. The database contains all the required stability graph information as well as other factors thought to influence stability, such as discrete major structures, poor shape and exposure time. The performance of each stope surface was quantified by calculating Equivalent Linear Overbreak/Slough (ELOS). The performance of stope walls and crowns was plotted on the supported and unsupported case history stability graphs. Based on this information an ODO design limit of HR = 3.3 x NÆ0.33 has been suggested for stope walls. Walls that plotted above this line were 80 per cent stable, 20 per cent unstable and zero per cent failed. Below the line 60 per cent were stable, 30 per cent unstable and ten per cent failed. Supported crowns that are flat or arched in shape and are not within the influence of major structures can be designed in the stability graphÆs æstable zoneÆ with a strong likelihood of stability. The Stability Graph Method did not reliably predict the performance of unsupported crowns at ODO.

AustraliaÆs record-breaking drought, efforts towards environmental best practice and the current commodities boom is demanding water use and reuse as never before. Mining practices, processing, the remote communities and support industries require vast amounts of specific quality water. Sustainability of water use has been a key factor in mine development, expansion of existing operations and increasing profitability of processes involving water. Developments in water treatment technology have enabled the use of a range of processes to produce this water reliably at ever decreasing costs. This increasing acceptance of new technologies has seen seawater desalination, recycling of plant wastewater streams, municipal wastewater reuse and others to become commonplace. Processes including seawater and groundwater reverse osmosis (RO), low pH RO, thermal desalination, high rate clarification, brine water treatment, ion exchange and other advanced treatment technologies are now used as part of mining operations. This paper surveys the trends in water treatment for the mining industry both in Australia and internationally with a review of technologies and case studies of operating plants. The key technologies are explained with an emphasis on the specific requirements for mining operations û unusual raw water, process and operations limitations, environmental concerns, as well as harsh climate. Case study information from several mining operations is included.

Gallium occurs at above background levels in most samples collected from 11 of the major geothermal areas in the Taupo Volcanic Zone. Concentrations of Ga in the 48 samples ranged from 8 to 144 mg kg-' and varies widely from place to place within each geothermal area. Gallium is contained within the alumino-silicate structure of clay in the mud, having substituted mainly for Al. Suggested deposition mechanisms for Ga also involve co-precipitation with Sb, As, and SiO. colloids. Digestion trials, carried out to determine extraction conditions for possible commercial exploitation, showed that heating the mud to 500 -600¦C for 1 hour followed by acid/alkali treatment gave complete recoveries.

Blast control in small scale underground mining leads to improved fragmentation control, improved control over overbreak and dilution, and the optimisation of drilling and charging operations. Greatly improved control can be achieved through blast monitoring, to confirm proper implementation of blast designs and blasthole charging. Further improvements can be achieved through simple modelling, enabling blastholes to be placed in the correct locations and charged with the correct weight and strength of explosive. Improved design can be shown to significantly reduce overbreak and dilution, and even ground support costs. In one mine in Quebec, open stopes of widths varying from 2.5 metres to four metres and dipping at 36¦ to 38¦ were designed to achieve zero dilution using open sloping blasting practices. The first stope designed in this manner was monitored in detail and achieved its objective.A method for contouring damage around blastholes is presented as a basis for selection of drilling patterns, with particular application to the control of overbreak and dilution. Every step on the path from the mine to the smelter invites a comparison between material inputs on one side and outputs plus accumulation on the other. Or put simply, between what you think you have produced with what you find you have at hand. The discrepancy between these sets of comparisons is the error. Following that error in a systematic and objective manner is a way to improve the mineÆs measurement systems, that in turn leads to more accurate accounting for ores, metals and concentrates. Because the control of production is so tightly coupled with the accounting of materials, any lasting improvements in materials accounting will benefit the predictions of materials movements and quality. This translates to more reliable planning and scheduling in stockpile management, logistics, shipping and marketing. The statistical tools described are direct adaptations from the long-standing methods used to maintain the quality of manufactured product in the discrete parts industries. Their use in the process industries, of which mining is one, requires some care owing to the continuous nature of ore extraction and its variable properties. The tools can be used for problem diagnostics and as early warning systems. In common practice many professional staff, in attempting to get a perfect reconciliation between expected and observed results, try to explain away the error or bury it completely. The methodology advocated here requires a different mindset because the error must be given pre-eminence for lasting improvement to be realised.

The Rosebery Mine on the west coast of Tasmania is a world class polymetallic base metal deposit, containing six major minerals: galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, gold, silver and pyrite. This resource has been exploited for nearly a century, yet a reliable estimate of the reserve continues to present a challenge.Over the past twenty years, the operation has changed from relatively low productivity cut and fill timber-support scraper mining, to higher productivity bulk mechanised open stoping. At the same time, economic constraints have changed and grades have fallen, which have increased the pressure to refine the resource/reserve estimating processes. This paper compares the restrictions of the polygonal section method of the past with the advantages of a kriged block model. The limitations of Mine Call Factors, the problems involved in converting decades of diamond drilling data on paper into a computer data base, and the effect of this new methodology at Rosebery, are described.

Like companies in other sectors of industry, mining companies are experiencing significant problems with low labour productivity, high labour turnover, and accidents. Increasingly, companies are recognising that good training is a vital factor in dealing with these problems. One such company is Aberfoyle Tin Limited. Early in 1979 the company engaged P.A. Consulting Services Pty. Ltd. (P.A.) to upgrade and formalize its miner training procedures. P.A. developed a programme using their Process Analysis Method of Training (P.A.M.T.) and trained a company trainer in its use. As a result of its application and the establishment of a formal training school, the rate of production of trained miners has been greatly increased. Despite some problems caused by lack of resources at the mine, the trainees graduating under the new scheme have been shown to be of comparable standard to those produced by the previously used "on the job" training method.

The presence of clay minerals slows down the settling rate and mitigates compact consolidation efficiency in tailings dewatering. The increasing use of saline water in many plants, affects the dewatering performance and presents the mining industry with new concerns. Efficient tailings dewatering is a great challenge due to the complexity character of tailings, especially clay mineralogy, clay content, and water chemistry. In this study, existing studies of the effect of different affecting parameters, such as pH, ionic strength and polymer flocculants, on clay aggregation behaviours are reviewed. The settling behaviours of three types of commonly observed clay minerals in tailings, kaolinite, bentonite, and illite, are also investigated in saline water with different water salinity as a case study. The settling rates of clay minerals are found to be affected by water salinity, clay type, clay content and polymer dosage levels. High salinity water hinders the settling of kaolinite but assists the settling of bentonite and illite through formation of different aggregation structures.The current work has indicated that strategies to promote more rapid dewatering could include adjusting flocculant type or level, water salinity and salt balance, and tailings solid content levels. Implementing dewatering strategies may require a more detailed knowledge of the effect of surface chemistry on the nature and strength of the clay inter-particle forces. This study discusses the research gaps on how to better manage clay-rich tailings in saline water and identifies new research directions. The development of a water management model, supported through in-line monitoring data to predict and manipulate of the surface chemistry of the clay component of the tailings could be a new direction to manage the issues associated with clay minerals in the process of dewatering and tailings management. An 18-month project was undertaken to test the effectiveness of controlled daily tidal exchange augmented with hydrated lime treatment of surface waters as an approach for remediating a severe acid sulfate soil disturbance at East Trinity, Cairns, north Queensland. Actual acid sulfate soils were producing hazardous levels of acid and heavy metal contaminants and degrading approximately 720 of the 940 ha East Trinity property and the adjacent foreshores. A government-led research team established a series of research projects with the aim of characterising the site (soils, water, terrain) and testing the effect of the lime-assisted tidal exchange management strategy on soils, water, sediments and biota.

Polycrystalline diamond compacts (PDC) have been widely used as cutting elements in the drilling tools for the oil, gas, civil and mining industries because of their faster penetration rates and longer bit life. US Department of Energy reports that PDC bits account for more than one-third of the total footage drilled worldwide (US Department of Energy, 2004). However, non-thermally-stable diamond composites (NTSDC) have seldom been applied to geothermal drilling, since premature failures of such PDC cutters have been observed in hard rock formations. Several factors need to be considered to prevent premature failure of cutters and improve cutting performance when using PDC-based bits and other rock cutting tools. The first set of factors consists of the strength, density, stiffness, toughness and thermal resistance of the PDC and the rock. A second set relates to the complex behaviour of the bonding between the PDC cutter and the bit matrix, or the pick and the pick holder, which is vital in maintaining stable, reliable and durable adhesion of the cutters to their hubs. Finally, based on a better understanding of the cutting processes, the formulation of a predictive model would assist in further development of cutter design.

This paper provides an overview of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling capability developed by CSIRO with the aim of improving the knowledge of flow migration dynamics within longwall goaf areas. The CFD models can be used to study the ingress of oxygen into the goaf in different ventilation scenarios and goaf drainage arrangements. This approach not only helps the design of effective gas control strategies but also the management of spontaneous combustion risk in the goaf. Innovative goaf inertisation strategies have been developed and implemented during longwall sealing operations. Work is continuing to develop general guidelines of proactive goaf inertisation strategies to suppress the development of spontaneous heating behind active longwall faces.

Coal mining in the Bulli seam in the Southern Coalfield in New South Wales has experienced the dangers of outbursts of coal and gas. These incidents present a major risk to the safety of mine workers and consequently a threat to the overall viability of the mining operations. Since the occurrence of a major outburst incident in the South Bulli Colliery in 1991 involving three fatalities, the primary contributory factors associated with coal/gas outbursts in the Bulli coal seam have been identified and a strategy for the management of the outburst risk has been formulated by the cooperation of mine operators, mine workers and the Department of Mineral Resources. Utilisation of risk management techniques in combination with modern gas drainage technologies and geological control methods have led to the formation of this effective outburst management plan. Clause 15 of the Coal Mines (Underground) Regulation 1999 in NSW has made it mandatory in an area of outburst to carry out mining in accordance with a code or guidelines developed for mining in outburst prone areas (DMR, 1999). In this paper an outburst management system is discussed which was developed for collieries in the Southern Coalfield that brings together all the available information including past experiences and risk management techniques in a documented form in order to maximise safety of mine workers. It is concluded that since the introduction of the outburst risk management systems in the Southern Coalfield in 1994 considerable reduction in outburst incidences have been experienced.

A microcomputer based expert system is presented for fast and cheap mineral identification. Because of the increasing pipularityof and interest for minerals and precious stones (selling, hobby polishing, collecting, teaching etc.) we pointedly deal with gemstone identification. In most cases only some fundamental data are needed to identify a mineral sample (or precious stone) if we know how to use these data. The important, characterizing data of the well-known minerals are stored in the data-base of our program-system. The visible and measured optical and physical properties of the sample are compared adequately with the stored data to get the result, the name of the examined mineral. The system works in a simple, friendly way - asking questions, understanding answers - so that no special computer knowledge is necessary to use it, only the answers should be typed in. The main advantage of the system is that only relatively simple and fast measure-ments are required. Based on these measurements a fast, reliable identification is processed on a cheap com-puter running a sophisticated program-system. The MINTEST system handles even those cases when the tested mineral cannot be determined based on the given input data.

In the mining industry, rock blasting can be considered as the first phase of comminution. The downstream phases of comminution are mechanical, and consist in consecutive stages of crushing and milling for grain size reduction. The total energy of mechanical comminution depends on grain size and on the resistance of the material to grindability. Usually, the first is quantified by the grain size distribution or one of its KPIs (such as the diameters X50 or X80), while the latter by the working index (WI), representing the amount of energy necessary to reduce the size of grains of a determined amount of material to the desired equivalent diameter (usually expressed in kilowatt hours per tonne – kWh/t). It is widely recognised that it is possible to manage the output of a blast in terms of grain size distribution varying specific charge (powder factor – PF) and charge distribution; specific algorithms such as the KUZ-RAM or the SWEBREC have been created to predict such output. It has also been demonstrated how higher PFs weaken the blasted material by creating micro-fractures that reduce its WI. This paper focuses on a related aspect: the influence of charge distribution on the specific comminution energy in crushing and milling. Small-scale blasts have been performed on 14 marble blocks with different PFs and charge distribution. For every PF, charges have been designed to simulate concentrated and distributed geometries. Concentrated charges simulate opencast blasts with large-diameter holes, with large burdens and spacings. Distributed charges simulate bench blasts with small-diameter holes and reduced burden and spacing. Three control blocks have been fragmented by mechanical means for comparison. For every sample the grain size distribution and the WI in ball mill has been determined. Results show the correlations between charge distributions and the specific energy of mechanical comminution in milling. The manufacturing industry reinvented its approach to the manufacturing process by managing and measuring it end-to-end. This improved returns on production assets, improved information quality and reduced delivery time, resulting in larger net profits through cost reduction and improved cash flow. Today this approach is standard in the manufacturing industry. Resource development has many requirements in common with the manufacturing production line. These include: control of the various steps, transparency of the state of the process to various levels of the organisation and the overall efficiency with which the process is executed. The authors argue that the introduction of manufacturing execution systems (MES) concepts and technologies to resource development processes will lead to similar improvements in control, transparency and efficiency and could improve profitability and enable staff to work more effectively and make better decisions.
