This paper describes the mining methods and strategy used to extract the 5 Orebody crown pillar at the Isa Lead Mine over the past five years. The bulk of the crown pillar was extracted by the use of sublevel open stope method. An uphole bench stope was mined to scavenge the remaining ore. Geomechanical issues associated with the crown pillar extraction are described. Stope sizes were gradually increased on a stope by stope basis. This has allowed the maximising of ore recovery while relevant risks were managed. The principles in designing ore rib pillars against various types of fill materials are also described.

This paper concerns a pragmatic approach to a problem that is common to many operations in the mining industry: how, over the short-term, to grasp the extent and distribution of long-term financial risk from environmental causes and reduce these risks strategically, in order to maintain stability and flexibility in the operations. Surprisingly, many companies operate without an environmental master plan or tools that can help managers measure and reduce financial risks. Such companies may be subject to unknown unacceptable financial risks from environmental causes. While many companies have some kind of internal system of environmental standards, it is often the case that such systems have uneven or limited effect, and offer no opportunities for visualising, measuring or managing aggregate financial risks from environmental causes. `Aggregate risks' are defined here as the calculated total expected financial costs to a company, or a subdivision of a company, from environmental causes at nominated operations over a defined time period. Aggregate risks take into account the type and magnitude of an environmental problem set, the likelihood of occurrence, and the time frame during which the problems will develop or solutions are required. For the large corporation, the 'amount of' aggregate environmental risk is a statistic that can be managed, along with other financial parameters, at the corporate level to improve the stability and predictability of operations, and protect the interests of shareholders. This paper concerns development of a management framework and a tool for the large corporation that responds to the need for managing aggregate environmental financial risks. The logical framework proposed to overcome the need for strategic vision is the Environmental Master Plan, and this is described in the next section. The analytical tool proposed to measure aggregate risks and provide relevant data and insights to managers, is called an Environmental Risk Management Information System, and its mechanics are described in a subsequent section.

The unmanned smart dispensing vessel (USDV) conducts bathymetry to gather data on water quality and hydrography, allowing the system to determine the appropriate reagent quantity and injection strategy. Strategic mine scheduling is an industry best practice for increasing the long-term value of mining operations and supply chains. The application of optimisation technology such as mixed integer linear programming (MILP) is able to achieve a mathematically optimal result for a given scheduling model. Such a model will typically define the available source material, processing options and desired constraints for accessing and processing the material. Most strategic scheduling models, however, do not include a sufficiently detailed model of capital expenditure options related to capacity expansion.Typical strategic schedule models do not include important capital expenditure features such as capacity decay or expiration (limited lifespan of trucks), precedence relationships over time (rail construction before a new plant or non-linear expansions due to economies of scale) or mutually exclusive option sets (choices of plant size). By not including these features, a strategic mine scheduling model for a capital-sensitive operation is unable to be optimised to deliver maximum value or profitability.This paper presents several results of MILP optimisation using advanced capital expenditure modelling for mining operations and supply chains. Results of the study demonstrate that optimising capital expenditure at the same time as optimising the mining schedule allows for minimisation of capital purchasing, optimal timing for those purchases and optimal scheduling around them. The ER&S Company operates a copper sinter plant, blast furnace and converter smelting complex at Port Kembla. Eighty percent of the smelter feed is dirty copper concentrates that contain some lead and zinc. The remaining twenty percent of the smelter feed is copper bearing secondary materials, some of which contain lead, zinc and tin. A predominately lead/zinc fume is produced during the smelting and converting of this feed mix. The composition and tonnage of fume produced at Port Kembla has varied over the years as the smelter feed sources have changed. The economic processing of the fume has always been dependent on the value of the metals contained in the fume and on the fume composition. Both pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical methods have been used to treat the fume for the recovery of some or all of the following metals - lead, zinc, tin, copper, cadmium, silver and bismuth. A detailed description of the treatment methods that have been investigated and used to process ER&S fume is given.

"Copper-ammonia-thiosulfate?leaching of gold has been researched for several decades as a potential alternative to cyanidation. However, this technology has not yet been applied commercially due to many challenges such as complex solution chemistry, reagent degradation and losses, system instability with losses of precious metals and difficulties in gold recovery from the leachate. Progress has been made at CSIRO in tackling some of these challenges including:better understanding and control of the leach conditions to minimise reagent losses whilst maximising gold recovery use of strong base ion exchange resins to recover the gold strategies to deal with polythionates that adsorb competitively with gold on ion exchange resins development and evaluation of process flow sheets.As a result there has been increased interest from the gold industry and renewed activities to develop thiosulfate based processes for gold recovery. One application area, which has been developed to the point of piloting, is the treatment of gravity gold concentrates using a copper-ammonia-thiosulfate leach with ion exchange recovery of the gold thiosulfate. My forebears migrated to South Australia in the 1830s, 1840s and 1850s. All of them were literate but, because they moved about South Australia looking for work, family papers have become scat- tered and I am left with a few fragments. Some years ago I was intrigued to find among my fath- er's books a frontispiece in an old Anglican Book of Lessons. As can be seen Joseph, a mining smith, was also a Freemason. Thus my interest was aroused. I know some- thing of modern day mining communities in South Australia and wondered what they were like 100 or more years ago.

The Tregoora Gold Project is centred around the old Mitchell River Antimony Field located 100 kilometres west-northwest of Cairns, North Queensland. The project is currently the subject of a joint venture between Strategic Minerals Corporation N.L. and Hawk Investments Limited.Historical BackgroundThe Tregoora area was first prospected for antimony and gold around 1890. During the periods 1905 to 1914 and 1937 and 1944 approximately 100 tonnes of antimony and an unknown quantity of gold were won from a number of small mines the principal one being the "Retina". A strong increase in the demand for antimony in the early 1970's resulted in renewed exploration activity in the region and the re-development of the Retina Mine. Despite the intermittent interest in the region for antimony it was not until 1984 that the potential of the area for hosting gold resources was realised with the delineation by Strategic Minerals Corporation N.L. of a significant gold deposit now referred to as the Black Knight.

During the course of an investigation into the fundamental chemistry of the cyanide process, it became evident that the usual method of determining protective alkalinity was not completely satisfactory. T.he routine method for the determination of protective alkali by first removing free cyanide by the addition of silver nitrate, followed by titration of alkali with dilute acid using. phenolphthalein as indicator, can be shown to give correct results only when the alkali is a strong base. For other sUbstances, the alkali so determined is not the protective alkali. In view of the complications associated with the presence of zinc in cyanide solutions the discussion will be restricted in the first place to solutions free from zinc. Until the chemistry of simple cyanide solutions is placed on a quantitative basis it will be difficult to elucidate the behaviour of complex mill solutions.By the use of physico-chemical theory, it is possible to treat certain aspects of 'the chemistry of cyanide solutions in a manner which not only illustrates the important variables involved, but which also shows the need for care in interpretIng results obtained by conventional methods.In the following, comparatively simple systems are discussed; the principles established should be of use in interpreting the behaviour of more complex solutions. The methods described are not intended for routine work, but may be regarded as supplementary to the usual analysis carried out for the control of plant solutions, or as alternatives to be used when the latter do not appear to be satisfactory.

In the time since the first trials in the mid-1980s, the Rare-Earth Magnetic Separators (REMS) are presently (year 2001) found in many heavy mineral sands plants around the world. Both the roll and the drum type are used from ilmenite concentration to cleaning high-purity zircon products. Chromium-bearing materials are removed from ilmenite more selectively than with electromagnetic separators. Greater flexibility and higher grades in ilmenite circuits are achieved. Cleaner rutile and zircon products, even with respect to levels of radioactive materials, are the result of superior magnetic force optimisation. Tailings from roaster plants can be reprocessed effectively, which is encouraging some operators to look at replacing old equipment in order to process roasted material plant feed or implement use of the new generation drum separators in new plants. Wet separation of ilmenite by using powerful wet REMS drum separators is now a possibility. This may be an alternative to at least a portion of the Wet High-Intensity Magnetic Separators (WHIMS) process for ilmenite preconcentration. A dry plant process flowsheet can often be modified by displacing a portion of high-tension separators with new high-temperature tolerant REMS.

Management at all levels continually strive to optimise, or make the most of resources available to them. Daily, decisions are being made on how to most efficiently locate and exploit an ore body, then process and market the recovered metal. At one level this optimisation process in the Australian mining industry appears to be successful, for example, witness the improvement in productivity and reduction in operating costs through the 1980s. Yet, at another level the industry's performance has been appreciably below expectations as measured by rate of return criteria. Companies likely to exhibit superior performance are those that are able to co-ordinate, through good planning, the optimisation process at all levels of the organisation. An important role for general management is therefore to provide the context or boundary conditions in which optimisation can Proceed.

In North Vietnam, large ductile shear zones are observed along the Red river fault and the Dienbien fault. Left-lateral sense of the Red river shear zone is related to the direction of shortening E-W. NE dipping foliation planes is subvertical. Stretching lineation is subhorizontal ( 25¦). Left-lateral slip observed in the Oligocene Yansun granites demonstrates the major tectonic phase in Neogene, The stress field established from microfaults observed in triassic limestones, Oligocene granites and Neogene Conglomerates. Measurements of striations on fault mirors are used for calculating the stress tensor and for separating tectonic phases. Two tectonic phases in tertiary are separated : first tectonic phase related to the compressive direction E-W corresponds to the major tectonic phase represented by NW left-lateral shear zone. Second phase having the compressive direction N-S associated with the right-lateral movement of the Red-river fault zone opening of the Eastern sea and the Red-river and the Red-river delta is associated with the left-lateral movement along the Red-river.

Tailings dams constructed by the upstream method have traditionally been built using the sand fraction of the tailings, which has automatically provided a relatively permeable embankment material, and helped provide the necessary drainage conditions which are a pre-requisite for safe and stable dam construction using this method. This paper discusses some recent trends which have resulted in proposals to use impermeable material in place of the sand fraction as the embankment material, both for the starter dam, and subsequent lifts. The consequences of these types of decisions on the overall stability of the dam are illustrated, and the need for continued monitoring of pore pressures in the tailings as the dam is raised is emphasised.

Blast movement measurement is a key component of grade control, enabling mines to carry all of the precision involved in locating ore blocks, through a chaotic blast, to production. A monitoring system was developed about ten years ago so that mine operation personnel can measure three dimensional movement in every production blast. Research has shown that blast movement is always highly variable with a significant non-deterministic component. The consequence is that modelling will be inaccurate and therefore optimal ore recovery can only be achieved by direct measurement of blast movement.Three dimensional movement vectors are measured at discrete locations in the blast. If blast movement is only measured at one location in a blast pattern, data is severely limited and has all of the inherent inaccuracies of modelling a variable population. It is intuitive that the accuracy of defining the post-blast ore block mark-ups are proportional to the number of movement measurement locations, however increasing the number of monitoring locations causes increases to the direct operating costs of the mine.A cost-benefit analysis is used to explore the optimal number of monitoring locations. Using the method described in this paper, an automated selection of the number and location of blast movement monitors are analysed against the value of recovered ore compared to the control, for each trial.CITATION:Loeb, J and Thornton, D, 2014. Prediction of rock cuttability by various excavation machines such as tunnel boring machines, road headers, rippers, picks, roller disc cutters, excavators, etc is of major concern to both civil and mining engineers and rock mechanics. In principle, the design of a rock cutting tool is based on achieving maximum excavation with minimum input energy, minimum applied force, minimum equipment weight and volume and, more importantly, minimum tool wear. When a rock material is indented by the force of a cutting tool and then unloaded several material zones form underneath and around the tool. As the tool moves into the rock the volume of its associated rock cavity (ie volume of displaced rock) expands and depending on the indenter's shape various phenomena may occur. Immediately beneath the tool a small zone in which the stress state is more or less hydrostatic, is formed which is underlain by an inelastic, or damaged, material zone. Both size and shape of this damaged zone control the magnitude of the indentation force and the chip formation mechanism during unloading. The rock is unable to store the whole strain energy induced by the tool and consequently the extra energy is expended either in forming new fracture surfaces and/or in plastic deformation in the damaged zone. Therefore, it is not surprising to see that both perfect-elastic and rigid-plastic constitutive models are not generally suitable for modelling indentation of rocks. In contrast elastoplastic constitutive models are more appropriate as they can include both elastic and plastic deformations (Kral et al, 1993). Elastic solutions for several half-space indentation problems can be found in most text books on elasticity and in particular in Timoshenko and Goodier (1951), Sneddon, (1951), Poulos and Davis (1974) and Johnson (1985a). If a failure criterion, eg the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, is applied to delimit elastic solutions for indentation problems, a lower bound limit of the applied indentation force (for a given indentation depth) can be estimated. It may be noted that elastic analyses, without any delimiting failure criteria, normally overestimate the indentation force. Plastic solutions for a few indentation problems may be found in Hill (1950), Johnson, (1985a) and Alehossein et al (1992). When analysing the behaviour of indented rocks the choice of an appropriate constitutive model describing effectively the behaviour of the rock at various stages and phases during indentation is a challenging issue. Several questions need to be answered before starting an effective analysis. The first question is of course: Which one of these is more appropriate for modelling zones underneath and around a cutter, elasticity or plasticity theory, continuum damage mechanics or fracture mechanics, and what is the bridging link between these various theories? Which mode is more dominant in fracturing rock, tensile or shear mode? What governs the mechanism of chip formation? What is the function, shape and the behaviour of the pulverised zone that forms just underneath a cutter? Is the hydrostatic stress state assumption reasonable for this zone? How does the rock change during the absorption and dissipation of the input energy and how does the indentation energy vary with rock type and depth of penetration? How can we model the damaged zone under the indenter? Furthermore does a plastic material form beneath the pulverised zone? When and how do radial and ring cracks form around and under an indenter?

An enhanced gravity concentrator was installed in conjunction with an intensive leach reactor at the Sadiola plant in Mali last year and commissioned in December 2007. There has been much debate over the years as to the effect of gravity concentration on overall plant performance. The late Dr Laplante suggested that for every ten per cent of gold recovered by gravity, there was a corresponding 0.1 per cent to one per cent additional overall plant recovery. The results at Sadiola are consistent with this hypothesis with an overall four per cent gain in plant recovery. With total gold recovery of 12 per cent in the gravity section, grades are increased from 3.54 g/t in the gravity feed to an average of 2 600 g/t in the concentrator feed to the inline reactor. The recovery of gold in the inline reactor is in excess of 98.5 per cent. This paper discusses the background to the project, the laboratory test work prior to the equipment selection, the operational results of the system, as well as the benefi ts of the future application of high mass yield centrifugal concentrators in base metals, sulfides and industrial minerals. Bench scale, pilot scale and plant practice examples are also presented.

A pillar 'is a block of coal left in the first working of a coal seam for the purpose of supporting the superincumbent strata in such a manner that the winning out roadways will be safe to traverse by men and by the coal transport system.PRINCIPLES OF PILLAR EXTRACTION.The size of a pillar is chiefly dependent on the depth of cover, and in a lesser degree on the nature of the coal, or the condition in which the seam has been laid down. In a seam at 1,100ft. depth of cover, and assuming a spec'ific gravity of 2.5 overall for the cover strata, a pressure of 1,200lb. per sq. in. is the loading on the top surface of the coal seam before mining begins.When mining commences, and as the pillars are formed, an increased load is imposed on the coal left in the pillars, according to the percentage of coal extracted in the first working. Thus, if 25% extraction is taken in the first working, the load on the pillars is theoretically increased from 1,200lb. per sq. in. to 1,600lb. per sq. in. over the area mined. If this state of things went on indefinitely it would not be possible wholly to extract a pillar because of the extreme pressure tliat would be thrown on the diminishing portion; but, fortunately, another element, that of time, enters into and assists the process of extraction.If the superimposed strata were of an entirely plastic nature, this time factor could not operate, as the cover weight would settle instantly on the remaining portion of the p'illar and finally overwhelm it. The cover strata above a pillar generally have a certain rigidity which does not allow the superimposed weight to settle instantly on the pillar fraction, and it requires a period of time to elapse before the extra weight is felt by the pillar.The time factor varies widely, and is governed entirely by local conditions; it can only be determined by experience gained on the spot or in close proximity to the area of operations. It is dependent on the strength of the strata and its characteristics under bridging conditions.It is, therefore, logical to assume that the more rapidly a pillar can be extracted the greater will be the safety factor and also the percentage of recovery of coal.Up to the present time, the operation of the extraction of pillars in this country has been, with a few exceptions, a manual one, and before mechanization of Collieries can be fully accomplished, the process will have to be performed mecharrically.

The Geological Survey of the U.S. Department of the Interior is primarily a domestic agency whose responsibility is furnishing impartial data and analyses to the public, private, and academic sectors of the Nation. The Survey concentrates on earth-science issues, such as mapping the land surface, determining the quality and quantity of water resources, estimating the nation's endowment of fuel and nonfuel minerals, and predicting and mitigating geologic hazards, such as those inherent in the tectonically active Pacific Rim. One of the challenges to managing this program is striking a sustainable balance between concentrating on the problems society wants solved today and investing in the research that seeds our vitality for the future. The Geological Survey's role in the Pacific results from the Nation's geography and the Nation's long standing interest in and commitment to the region. The longest segment of the U.S. coastline borders the Pacific Ocean, one of our states is a Mid-Pacific island chain, our lands are 80 degrees--nearly one-fourth--of the Pacific perimeter, and our Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) underlies significant parts of the eastern, northern, and central Pacific waters. Thus, the program of marine and terrestrial science operating in these areas make substantial contributions to the world's growing understanding of the Pacific realm.

Many narrow-vein gold deposits are characterised by a high to extreme nugget effect and the presence of coarse gold. They rank amongst the most difficult of deposits to produce an accurate and precise resource estimate. This contribution presents a case study from the Nalunaq Gold Mine in Southern Greenland. The mine commenced operation in May 2004 and is currently operating at a rate of 400 tonnes per day, to produce about 100 000 oz gold per annum from a total resource base of 1.2 Moz. Mineralisation is characterised by quartz veins that are hosted within a shear zone that is continuous over about 1000 m. The principal orebody is the Main Vein structure, which ranges up to 3 m in width, maintains an average dip of 35¦SE, and contains significant gold grades (1000s g/t Au). Gold particles are often visible, with 25 per cent being greater than 250 microns in size. Variography using underground development samples indicates a nugget effect of about 75 per cent. For the 2005 resource estimate, a 2D metal accumulation ordinary kriged block model was used to produce a global grade for the Target and South Blocks of the Main Vein. Grade control chip-channel samples are collected from æshantyÆ drive footwalls, and used as the basis for both the kriged block model and to determine the grade of individual stope blocks by peripheral weighted averages. Geology plays a key role in mining efficiency, given the locally variable nature of the ore zone.

This study details a mineralogical and textural characterisation of West African iron ores with an emphasis on their behaviour during mineral processing. By means of both qualitative and quantitative characterisation, a simulation of the beneficiation process applied to these iron ores is performed. A series of different analytical tools are used, including:X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) for qualitative mineralogical analysis;• qualitative optical microscopy (phase identifi cation, description of micro-textures) and (semi)• quantitative optical microscopy (counting of particles, phases and textural types); and• chemical analysis.All the information provided by these analytical methods are combined into a quantitative mineralogical and textural analysis, here called ‘modal analysis’, which enables us to simulate the capability of West African iron ores to be benefi ciated by magnetic and gravimetric separation techniques.On one hand, both qualitative XRD and optical microscopy have revealed the presence of the following mineralogical phases: magnetite, haematite, goethite and quartz. On the other hand, the chemical analyses provide us with quantitative inputs expressed as oxides. We have converted the oxides into mineralogical contents expressed as magnetite, haematite, goethite and quartz. In this way, we build a simple quantitative mineralogical analysis.Beside this, the semi-quantitative approach of the characterisation by optical microscopy also provides us with a liberation study, enabling us to split the gangue-bearing content between two types of particles:1. liberated gangue-bearing particles, and2. composite particles composed by both iron (oxhydr) oxides and gangue-bearing minerals.We have assumed that we could anticipate the behaviour of these two kinds of particles through a mineral process, by simulating the removal of at least the liberated particles of gangue. Optical microscopy also revealed a trend in the weathering profi le of the Tokadeh ore horizon with a decrease from bottom to top of magnetite and an increase of both goethite and martite showing a higher level of oxidation and hydration in the upper ore horizon.We have applied this removal extent upon the quartz content of the mineralogical quantitative analysis and we have re-calculated the quantitative mineralogical analysis considering the expected decrease in the quartz content. Finally, by converting the re-calculated (oxhydr) oxides contents into iron grades and summing them, we do obtain a fi nal simulated iron grade for the upgraded products.
