A shift in the present day oil exploration scenario from West Coast can be foreseen keeping in mind peak of exploration in Cambay Basin and fast pace of development in Bombay High and its associated fields by the end of this century. Shifts in exploration from structural traps to stratigraphic traps, techno- logical development to drill in deep waters, improving economic situation for oil ventures and proven oil and gas potential of East Coast basins suggest that Indian oil explorat- ion scene will be at its peak along east coast during early 21st century. Hydrocarbon shows in Poonch and Jawalamukhi in Punjab Basin, improvements in drilling to greater depths, better seismic data aquisition, good source rock potential of Subathus and its equivalents and large geologi- cally mapped structures will reopen new avenues for explorationists. Not much exploration effort has been put up so far in Ganga Basin. Keeping in mind size of the basin, sedimentary thickness involved, presence of algal matter deposited in shallow marine environment & higher hydrocarbon indications warrant active exploration. Gondwanas in India having such a large sedimentary area can not be ignored keeping in view generation and production from the non marine sediments of Kenya, Chad, Sudan, Gadon and China. Gondwanas become all the more important in view of gas production from their equivalents-Karoos in Ethiopia and South Africa. In all, above mentioned changes can be predicted in Indian oil exploration scenario during 21st century.

Physical model testing at Bergbauforschung is done in two rigs, a roadway rig and a longwall rig. The loading of such models, in scale relation to the con- ditions in the collieries provides valuable guidance to the probability and nature of failures, and thus to support requirements, in structural, roofbolts and self- auvancing supports. The success of such modelling when related to subsequent underground designs put to use suggests that such methods of investigation could be extended to pillar extraction problems also.

Metal smelting is seeing a continual increase in intensity and throughput in recent years. This is done with increasing demand for cost/capital efficiency, higher recovery, and managed environmental impact, among other things. With the development of more intense smelting processes, the issues of refractory wear, mixing and separation of reacting phases and the nature of the reactions between them become more prominent. Understanding of interfacial phenomena is in growing need, in addition to knowledge of the bulk properties of equilibrium and transportation. The GKW CRC has a suite of projects aimed at developing various techniques and expertise to provide information of interfaces in metallurgical systems. This article illustrates some recent development in this area, particularly in studies of melt/refractory contacts, the determination of surface and interfacial tension of metal/slag/matte melts, modelling slag-metal mixing and studies of kinetics of the smelting reactions.

However, not all mines which have been established have been successful, some times due to a misconception that alluvial mines are quick to establish and easy to operate. In June 1989 a diving cruise of the French submersible Nautile has been carried out on the North Fiji basin spreading ridge. The objective of the cruise was the geological and geochemical study of the active spreading axis and associated hydrothermalism processes. This operation was the third cruise of the French-Japanese STARMER project following two cruises of the R/V Kaiyo in 1987 and 1988.INTRODUCTIONAfter the Seapso III cruise (Auzende et al., 1986, 1988a and b) of the R/V Jean Charcot in 1985, the objective of the Kaiyo 87 and 88 cruises was the complementary Seabeam mapping of the North Fiji Basin spreading axis between WS and 22'S and a systematic sampling (water and rocks) and deep towing (TV and photos) at about every ten milles along the axis.

Partnering has come to prominence in the Australian construction industry in a formal sense this decade. The high level of disputation in the building and civil construction industries in the 1980s drove its development in both Australia and North America. PartneringÆs use has been most prominent in the construction industry, particularly in the civil and construction sectors of the industry. It has found favour in some mining development projects, one of the most notable being BHP MineralÆs Cannington project in NW Queensland. This paper examines the requirements of successful partnering agreements and describes in detail the mine development partnering agreement at Cannington. In particular, the paper discusses the authorÆs experience and recommendations for partnering to avoid contractual problems and achieve win û win project outcomes for all parties to major mining projects.

In 2013 the Mopani Copper Mine Mufulira plant in Zambia embarked on a project that was aimed at improving concentrator recoveries. The project commenced with the automation of the milling and flotation circuits. This involved the installation of new instrumentation, namely measurement devices and actuators, and the connection of these to new programmable logic controllers (PLCs).The infrastructure changes were followed by the implementation of basic proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers on the PLCs. Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) interfaces were also implemented to allow for switching between controller modes, inputting of setpoint variables and to provide a visual display for process monitoring. The final phase of the project involved the installation and commissioning of advanced process control (APC) solutions on the milling and flotation circuits. This work was carried out by Mintek over 21 on-site days. The APC solutions included the MillStar and FloatStar suites of advanced controllers.The MillStar control suite focused on stabilising the mill feed and mill discharge on the two primary mills as well as the flotation circuit feed. Mintek’s CyLas instruments, which provide a measurement of the hydrocyclone underflow angle, were also installed. The measurements were incorporated into the discharge stabilisation control on both milling circuits. The FloatStar level stabiliser controller provided flotation cell pulp level control on fourteen cells, including two columns.Performance tests showed that the Mintek APC system stabilised the mill feed and mill discharge while ensuring the process remained within operational constraints. The MillStar control system utilised the CyLas instrument to prevent roping on the hydrocyclone underflow. This was not always achieved under normal operation. Additionally, the flotation section was stabilised as a result of improved level control by the FloatStar control system.Performance comparisons showed that the Mintek control system improved the operation of the milling and flotation circuits resulting in a greater copper recovery.CITATION:Naidoo, A, De Gee, B E and Viviers, N, 2014. In South African gold mines, the types of material requiring transportation to the stoping areas include timber packs, explosives, hydraulic rock props, scrapers, scraper winches, pipes, pumps and backfill material (in areas where backfill is being used). Currently timber packs are broken down to their basic components (log and brick) and are transported into the stope by means of either monowinches or a combination of monowinch and scraper winch. Other materials, such as explosives, hydraulic rock props, scrapers, scraper winches, pipes, pumps and backfill material must be transported by other means, usually by hand or, in the case of heavier items, by chain blocks. With the drive to increase stope advance rates and the rise in the number of miners with HIV/AIDS, there is a need in the South African gold mining industry for an improved material handling system. To meet future requirements, material handling systems should assist miners to transport materials quickly and efficiently. Furthermore, it must be financially viable and economically competitive with current material handling systems. This paper looks at the in-stope material handling efficiency of current monowinch systems and provides solutions to improve efficiency. In addition, the use of in-stope monorails are reviewed and the possible scenarios that will substantiate the use of monorail systems are discussed.

Statistical frequency distributions may be used to characterize the overall variation of grade in orebodies. Special types of distribution (e.g. lognormal, log-type A) are necessary to describe skewness inthe case of rare metals. Also needed (but for the most part hitherto neglected) is the serial correlation function which describes the tendency for grades near together in an orebody to be closer together than grades at points relatively far apart.The sampling problem for orebodies is interpreted in statistical terms. Different methods are reviewed, and the effect of serial correlation discussed.A discussion is given, based on experiments and observations made by the author, of biases arising in the minei:l material by such methods as chip sampling and grab sampling due to such causes as nonrepresentative selection by the sampler.INTRODUCTIONMiners have always recognized the large element of chance in their operations. Chance is the raw material of statistical theory and, provided there is some recognizable pattern or underlying regularity in a set of data arising from the operation of chance events, statisticians are able to formulate mathematical models to study them. Mining engineers, geologists, and statisticians have gone a long way between them towards finding general statistical rules which describe the distribution of minerals and metals in orebodies, and even the distribution of orebodies over the earth's surface.These rules do not have the force of physical laws, though they obviously derive from them and have been used to throw light on them. The paper briefly discusses the benefits to proponents of a formal environmental assessment process. It is argued that any process should be fair, cost effective and efficient, involve all affected parties, and should identify important issues at an early stage. The paper outlines the procedure used in Victoria, and the ways in which it attempts to address the above criteria.In conclusion the paper discusses progress towards a national approach to Environmental Impact Assessment. This is currently being pursued by the Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council.

Particles finer than 10 um often cause problems in flotation. The current under- standing of the nature of the following effects is discussed: slime coatings on particles, carrier flotation, increased froth stability, entrainment of ultrafine gangue, excess reagent consumption, slower rate of flotation, more reactive surfaces. The review emphasizes the principles underlying these effects rather than details of progress in practical solutions to the problems they cause. The princi- ples of selective flocculation and floc flotation and the various approaches to achieving selectivity are discussed. Hydrodynamic effects on floc growth are reviewed. The evidence suggests that satisfactory performance in the ultrafines fraction will be achieved only by simul- taneously increasing the rate of flotation of the ultrafine valuable mineral and de- creasing the rate of entrainment of ultra- fine gangue.

Constructed between 1885 and 1891, the New Croton Aqueduct (NCA) in New York State is a 50 km long (31 mi) brick-lined tunnel conveying water from the Croton watershed north of New York City to distribution systems in the Bronx and Manhattan. Except at two siphons, the aqueduct operates as an open channel conduit from the New Croton Reservoir downstream 39 km (25 mi) to the Jerome Park Reservoir in the Bronx. The remaining 11 km (6 mi) is operated as a pressurised conduit and includes a major siphon, of circular cross-section, under the Harlem River. The aqueduct has a flow capacity of approximately 1100 million litres of water per day (13 m3/s or 290 million gallons per day) and supplies on average ten per cent of New York CityÆs drinking water. The CityÆs water supply system is operated and maintained by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP). This paper covers the work done during the three main stages of the program to rehabilitate the entire NCA: inspections, design and rehabilitation. It also includes some of the more interesting structural findings of the original construction as well as documents and drawings from the NYCDEP archives. The rehabilitation program has been underway in phases since 1993, with inspections scheduled to minimise outages, allowing this strategic aqueduct to remain in service during critical seasonal periods. The open channel flow section of the aqueduct in the north is horseshoe shaped, with inside dimensions of 4.1 m (13.6 ft) in width and 4 m (13.5 ft) in height. The pressurised section is 3.7 m (12.3 ft) in diameter, and includes a 90 m (330 ft) deep siphon under the Harlem River. A total of 163 million bricks were used in the construction, enough to build a 48 km (30 mi) wall around Manhattan Island, 3 m (10 ft) thick and 15 m (50 ft) high.Between 1993 and 1997 a series of in-tunnel investigations were performed in the open channel portion of the NCA, consisting of field inspection, non-destructive geophysical testing, and coring of the brick liner. Between November 2004 and September 2005, a major inspection program was conducted to assess the condition of the 11 km (6 mi) long pressurised section and all shafts, headhouses and blow-off structures along the entire 50 km (31 mi) alignment. Inspection methods included using an underwater remote operated vehicle (ROV) equipped with sonar and cameras to inspect the deep siphon, fibre optics examinations of probe holes drilled through and beyond the brick lining, and core holes and geophysical inspections to assess properties of the liner and behind-the-liner materials. A water pressure and test grouting program was conducted to assess methods and expected grout takes for the rehabilitation work in the pressurised sections. The rehabilitation program is anticipated to be completed in 2010.

Australia has historically been a world leader in mining innovations. This trend is reflected in the international patent records, which show that in recent years there has been some recovery in the number of patent filings arising from Australian research. These innovations occur across a wide cross-section of mining technologies and derive from both public and private sector research. Australian mining innovations are largely dominated by new processes and equipment, principally in the areas of rock drilling and coring, strata stabilisation, cutting tools, blasting, mine design and oil field exploitation. They include improvements in drill bits, rock bolts and accessories and wellbore systems. Another area that has received significant research attention has been the in situ thermal processing of coal deposits. High profile examples of Australian mining innovations include the æSORDMinerÆ, a remote-controlled mining machine for use in mining collapsing wet environments, and CSIROÆs SMART*CUT rock cutting pick that dramatically increases the rate of cutting hard rock. This paper will provide an overview of recent innovations in Australian mining, as reflected in the international patent records, including the organisations and individuals active in the field, and the technological nature of specific innovations.

The quality of the external water source for a mineral processing plant may influence the extent to which the environmentally desirable practice of recycling of water from plant products is possible. This is particularly likely for froth flotation plants where the chemical quality of the water may affect the plantÆs performance. The quality of the external water source or the recycled water can be improved by a water treatment step, and in turn the extent of recycling which can be tolerated is able to be influenced. The quality of the external water can range from very high quality, soft water derived from melting snow, to poor quality, hard water (high levels of dissolved calcium and magnesium) from underground aquifers, and to even lower quality sea water (very high levels of dissolved species including sodium chloride). It can be noted that some underground water is more saline than ocean water as well as containing high levels of dissolved calcium and magnesium. Occasionally, a different source of water is utilised in the wet and the dry seasons. Increasingly, sewage water from cities is becoming a potential external water source with sustainability implications. If the initial quality of the external water is high, the scope for recycling of water from all the products is maximised. Such reuse or recycling of water from the products allows chemical species from oxidation of the ore and from other inputs to the process such as reagents to increase in concentration in the water returned to the plant. Such accumulation of species can have negative effects on the performance of a process such as froth flotation but instances of positive effects exist. Some reagents which are used in flotation plants such as lime or sodium carbonate also happen to be commonly used for independent water treatment plants. Hence, the flotation process may inadvertently provide some aspects of water processing. Where the quality of the water in the feed to a mineral processing plant (external water plus recycled water) is not an issue, more powerful solid-liquid separation processes can be considered to maximise the removal of water from the products and its reuse. Such processes may also have complementary benefits in a sustainable mineral industry by, for example, producing a tailing stream with a higher per cent solid value which is more suitable for safe storage on the surface or underground. This paper documents findings on the effect of water quality on the flotation process. It also considers current directions of change in the need for increased removal of water from plant products. It then considers the implications of these trends for maximisation of water recycling by such operations.

In underground ore mining of copper ore, lead-zinc ore, tin ore and fluorspare in German Democratic Republic geological situation is characterized by ore deposits of small thickness and great variability of ore grades and mining conditions. For long range mining strategy and short-term planning of production a model was developed fitting to make optimal economic mining decisions. Starting point of the model is a cost function representing all direct costs per unit recoverable metal in concentrate for each stoping unit (ore reserve block). In the costs function the results of regression analysis of ore grade and metal recovery in concentration plant were considered. All stoping units (ore reserve blocks) of a mine were arranged to growing direct costs. The relationships of recoverable metal, ore tonnages and corresponding costs were plotted in a diagram. The data processed by- computer and the graphic representation of the results make possible 1. economic evaluation of stopes and ore reserve blocks, 2. estimation of cut off grade, 3. optimization of works planning.

Highwall mining commenced in the Appalachian region 50 years ago. With innovative equipment design introduced in more recent times, penetration distances over 300 m are now commonplace. It is only in the last three years that highwall mining has become part of the Australian coal industry. Geotechnical evaluation is an integral part of the Australian procedures, and although still being refined, has already proven its worth. Statutory guidelines have also been prepared for operations in Queensland. This paper explores trends in equipment design, geotechnical prediction, operating techniques and statutory requirements with regard to highwall mining Australia's coal deposits. A quick assessment guide to assist in the evaluation of potential sites is included.

To secure a sustainable competitive advantage some smelters may need strategies based on flexibility in feed and product ranges depending on immediate future projections of profitability. This paper explores the technical requirements for strategic diversity in smelting, leaving procurement, marketing and contractual considerations aside. The days when a smelting operation is tied specifically to say only processing zinc concentrates are perhaps drawing to a close. While internationally traded mineral concentrates are available, attractive business opportunities must exist for fully diversified custom smelters. Certain new and emerging technologies have inherent characteristics that are evaluated in this context. The paper identifies the basic building blocks that will permit such a scenario and assesses the technical feasibility. The ability to respond flexibly to environmental pressures is highlighted as being of paramount importance.

Establishing the link between the solid, cold rock of dikes, sills, plutons, and lavas and hot, active magma chambers is the quest of igneous petrology. Differentiation of Earth, the diversity of the igneous rocks, and the spectacle of volcanism are ample evidence that magmatic processes are fundamental to our understanding of planet formation and evolution. Single gabbroic plutons, on the other hand, often show intricate and abundant evidence of the effects of crystal growth and sorting. It has not proven simple, however, to establish the basic principles of magmatic behavior leading to this crucial evidence. Because of their abundance, exposure, simple geometry, large range in size, and often straight-forward petrology, sills are excellent examples of the magma chambers. Physical and chemical processes operating in sills can be recognized that also routinely operate in many other bodies. Understanding the dynamics of sill solidification is essential to understanding the genetic links between lavas and plutons.
