In large-scale mining, large-sized intermediate pillars, or block-pillars, are generated on the horizon or between closely located mines. These pillars are mined under high rock pressure that results from the stress concentration zones superposition from closely located working excavations. This problem becomes much more complicated if high tectonic stresses occur in the rock mass inducing a rock-burst risk situation. Mining experience gained in mining seven block-pillars at three Khibiny mines in Russia under the geomechanical situation like that described aboveÆ is discussed in detail. It has been shown how safe mine of block-pillars depends on their width, location relative to significant geological failures and uncaved rocks of the hanging wall, the order of pillar recovery, and application of special measures for rock mass stress relieving. Basing on the analysis of the mining experience and special scientific researches, the basic principles are worked-out for safe block-pillar mining under rock-burst prone conditions.

Orebodies in the Mt. Charlotte - Hannans North Area N. & B. of the town of Kalgoorlie provide a marked'dontrast to the pyrite - telluride lodes of the Golden Mile, although both groups of orebodies appear to be fundamentally related. These highly siliceous telluride free orebodies N. of the Golden Mile are closely related to strong oblique faulting. The Golden Mile. lodes, while possessing an apparent over-all relationship to the oblique faults also have a close relationship to E.-dipping strike faults.

Testwork carried out in the cooling water circuit at the Yabulu treatment plant of the Greenvale Joint Venturers (Metals Exploration Queensland Pty. Ltd. and Freeport Queensland Nickel Incorporated) since 1980 has resulted in significant improvements to both fouling and corrosion control. At the same time corrosion inhibitor costs have been reduced.Acrylate-type silt dispersants were identified as the most effective means of sediment control in the circuit. An increase in the cathodic component of the corrosion inhibitor coupled with a relatively minor adjustment to water pH has yielded a two to three fold reduction in corrosion rate. It has been established that these lower corrosion rates can be sustained in the face of a 20% reduction in corrosion inhibitor addition rate. Further improvements are indicated with a change of raw water algicide.

The incidence of colliery disasters has highlighted the need for more centralised and directed coal mining safety research in Queensland, with particular impetus from explosions at Box Flat in 1972, Kianga in 1975 and Moura No 4 in 1986. Inquiries which identified the likely causes recommended measures and, research and two outcomes have been the present Mines Safety Research Advisory Committee and The Safety in Mines Testing and Research Station at Redbank, near Brisbane, dealing with all mining problems, coal and metalliferous. Already, important research into ignition and explosion and other health and safety matters has been accomplished; the Station has become an accredited testing laboratory; and international recognition has been achieved. Now the advisory, testing and research arms are soundly in place to pursue preventive investigations and be ready to provide assistance in any emergencies.

Two field studies to monitor fill pres sures and vein-wall deformation were conducted in mines of the Coeur d'Alene mining district in Idaho. Both operations employed cut-and-fill mining techniques in nearly vertical veins aver- aging 10 feet in width, and backfilled with classified mill tailings. Hydraulic pressure cells were used to measure transverse, longitudinal, and vertical pressures within the backfilled stopes. Rock bolts extending into the manways and mechanical closure devices were used to monitor vein-wall convergence. Continuous recorders were used with selected pressure cells to prolong the life of the installation. Transverse pressures in excess of 600 psi and stope wall closure up to 22 inches were re- corded. Closure rates were higher at midheight of the stope than they were near either sill, indicating that the vein walls react similarly to a beam supported on each end.

In his letter of resignation as General Superintendent of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters (BHAS) prior to taking up aconsulting position at imperial Smelting, G.K. Williams wrote that he considered his major contributions at BHAS were:the development of large scale sintering machines;the double tuyere-row blast furnace; continuous lead refining.Despite his well deserved reputation as a scientist, based on his advancement of the metallurgical chemistry underlying lead refining processes, Williams reveals that he considered commercial implementation as the ultimate measure of technological success. The start up operations of Western Mining Corporation's Kalgoorlie nickel smelter encountered troubles due to the high magnesia content of the concentrates. The flash smelter slags, with higher than normal magnesia content, had a much higher melting point than the normal low-magnesia, predominantly fayalite slags usually produced in nickel smelting. Investigations were made of the structures, melting points and viscosities of the Kalgoorlie smelter slags, as produced, and with additions of silica or lime.

Site location, topography, ground conditions and infrastructure are some of the major hurdles to overcome when setting out on the design of such plants.
