Coal washery wastes comprise tailings, finer than 0.5 to 0.1 inn depending on the sophistication of the washery, and coarse reject, typically finer than 50 mm. Subaerial disposal of coal tailings slurry at about 30 per cent solids by mass results in the formation of a delta with an average slope of about 1 in 100, representing one extreme. The ravelling of coarse reject on loose-dumping, results in an angle of repose slope with an angle of about 37" (1 in 1.3), representing the other extreme. The pumped co-disposal of coal tailings and coarse reject results in the formation of an upper delta with an average slope of about to one in ten, between the two extremes. The depositional behaviour of these three waste streams is discussed and compared in this paper. The important depositional and material parameters, and a theoretical description of the processes involved, are also presented. Comparisons are made between the depositional behaviour of the various coal washery waste streams, and natural depositional systems, such as rivers, alluvial fans, and scree slopes.

The high-shear colloidal mixer is generally recognised as the most efficient method of mixing cement based grouts. Only recently however has this technology been applied to the production of cemented rockfill (CRF) for use in underground mines in North America. Traditionally, paddle type mixers have been used to produce the cement based slurries required for the preparation of CRF. While considerable success has been achieved with these mixers, tremendous advantages are attained with the colloidal mixer. The combined effect of the highly efficient mixing action and the ability to mix low water/solids ratios, allows for reductions in the cement content for a given strength requirement. Cement can also be replaced by cheaper fillers such as flyash, resulting in further cost savings. Although large-scale dedicated CRF batching plants are typical, there is a growing need for mobile plants capable of operating anywhere underground. The compact size and rapid batching speed of high-shear colloidal mixers has allowed them to be incorporated into skid mounted systems capable of producing and discharging cement based slurries onto rockfill aggregate for the production of CRF. In many cases run-of-mine development waste can be used as CRF aggregate with these slurry plants thereby reducing the cost of waste rock removal. These relatively low cost portable plants have now allowed several mines to economically recover isolated pillars and realise positive returns on their investment.

"Dynamic decision-making can significantly increase the value of mining projects and deliver better sustainability outcomes under conditions of uncertainty. Despite its benefits, dynamic decision-making is rarely used by the mining industry, possibly because of the complexity of the algorithms used to make sequential decisions under uncertainty and difficulties in visualising the optimal strategies. To achieve better outcomes in practice, decision-makers in industry would benefit from a tool that would help them to understand and implement the results of the analysis.CSIRO is developing innovative dynamic decision support tools that include an intuitive graphical display of the boundaries between the regions of different optimal decisions, which would significantly assist optimal sequential decision-making under uncertainty. The dynamic decision support tool is based on novel stochastic optimal control methodologies that can be used to optimise decisions in situations with multiple uncertain variables and decisions (Tarnopolskaya, Chen and Bao, 2015; Chen et al, 2015; Langrené et al, 2015). A high horizontal stress field has significant effect on the stability of underground roadways and influences the design of a support system in this environment. The high horizontal stresses at E1lalong Colliery, NSW, Australia provided the environment for this study. Samples of coal measures 'rock were collected and tested to determine their mechanical properties. The lithology, stress state, geometry and conditions prevailing in particular areas of the mine were obtained from geotechnical reports available at the mine and by field observation. The results of a series of finite element models constructed and tested under various conditions provided a basis for comparison with field observations. Analysis of the results indicated sufficient correspondence to provide a basis for the proposed design of an optimum support system. It is not suggested that finite analysis provides 'exact answers', but it does show the relative importance and interaction of various parameters.

The Wambo Rail Spur located near Singleton, New South Wales, Australia, runs for 14 km linking the Mt Thorley rail loop and running north-west alongside Jerrys Plain Road to the Wambo Coal Mine at Warkworth. A portion of the project is a 260 m long tunnel located where the rail line passes under Jerrys Plain Road. The tunnel has a low cover and is mostly within highly weathered to fresh laminated siltstone interbedded with coal seams, sandstone and conglomerate. This paper presents the design basis and construction methods used to achieve the 100 year design life of the tunnel required by Wambo Coal while also satisfying settlement and vibration limits imposed on Jerrys Plain Road.

The working of alluvial deposits has from all times been a popular form of mining, not only from the simplieity of its operations, but also, in its more primitive stages, from the possibility of carrying it on without large capital, without skilled lahour, expensive plant, long terms of preparatory work, or, in fact, any other requisite than a shovel, a dish, and a stout pair of arms. It is possibly one of the oldest industries, and probably, also, it has been one of the most profitable.In tbe Australian States the happy days of rid alluvial deposits, when gold was to be hltd for the shovelling, are now almost over. The lust for gold has caused almost every corner of the world to be ransacked, and the more easily earned wealth to he exhausted: for the most part there remain now those deposits only which are too poor to be profitably worked by means of the implements and methods of old times. But, though the deposits have become poorer, the keen inventiveness of man has devised means whereby such large quantIties can be treated at a cost so low that he can still make a profit out of them. In this article, out of the many means devised, three only will be referred to-viz., hydraulic sluicing, bucket dredging, and hydraulic dredging. All mining may be divided into three principal operations-1st, the breaking down and conveying of the ground to where it is to be treated for the recovery of the metallic values, 2nd, the treatment of the material for the recovery of those values; and, 3rd) the removal of the worthless material or tailings. In all mining the object is to effect these three processes for the least expenditure of money commensurate with the highest degree of efficiency.

As part of a long-term acid rock drainage (ARD) mitigation study, PT Freeport Indonesia has completed the construction of a highly instrumented, full-scale, experimental, overburden stockpile to further evaluate the behaviour of the waste rock system at Grasberg mine. A total of 24 lysimeters, 30 sets of thermistor strings and 48 oxygen-sampling ports were installed at select locations during stockpile construction. ARD flow rates and chemistry have been recorded since the start of overburden rock placement in April 2000. Measurements of in situ temperatures and oxygen concentrations quantify reaction rates and the oxygen pathways that control oxidation kinetics deep within the waste rock profile. Direct field observations show the significance of advective oxygen flow with respect to the onset of oxidation kinetics. Oxygen measurements show that the rubble zone that forms at the base of a waste rock bench provides a critical pathway for oxygen entry to the waste rock profile. Furthermore, rapid oxidation as evidenced by measured temperature increases deep within the panels of waste rock is observed to occur. The observations presented in this paper provide critical insight for understanding the mechanisms and behaviour of full-scale waste rock stockpiles with respect to ARD generation. The results of this program will assist in the future selection, testing and evaluation of appropriate mitigation measures with respect to surface and face treatments to reduce long-term ARD generation. This project is a work in progress, and at least another two-years will be required to fully understand site-specific ARD generation and ARD mitigation mechanisms. This paper will discuss various design and construction considerations, provide an overview of results achieved to date, and some preliminary interpretation of what is happening within the overburden stockpiles.

A report is given of the problems of finance and physical resources that currently affect The University of New South Wales, and of some of the measures adopted to alleviate them. Partly as' a result of review procedures, a School of Mines was formed to amalgamate Applied Geology and Mining Engineering, and to add the skills of extractive metallurgy to produce a group to match the needs of the minerals industry. A review of courses within the School indicated a need for enhanced computer teaching, which is partially negated by a lack of resources. It also shows an overcrowded course whose structure could possibly benefit from a split into managerial and specialist streams.

The post pillar cut and fill stoping method has been adopted by King Island Scheelite for the extraction of the main Dolphin orebody. The orebody is a massive, tabular deposit varying from 10 to 50 metres in thickness, and dipping at approximately 30¦ towards and under the sea bed. The mining method was selected for 1. maintenance of hangingwall support under the sea bed; 2. maximisation of first stage ore extraction; 3. flexibility of mining, allowing maintenance of grade and selective mining around waste bands within the orebody, and 4. compatibility of existing equipment both with stoping and the on-going underground mine development programme. Stope parameters were established on the basis of initial rock stress analyses, and since the undercut phase of mining the stoping programme has been monitored with various types of deformation measuring devices installed in a series of large diameter boreholes.

At the outset, I guess we should define what we mean by "com- modities". In the 20 minutes or so which I have for this paper, it is impossible to tackle all commodities -one would need to con- sider not only the base metals but also the ferrous iron and steel products as well as energy commodities such as coal, oil and even uranium. For the purpose of this address however, I would prefer to refer to the principal non-ferrous commodities: copper, lead, zinc, aluminium and nickel and, I would like to consider some of the changes which have taken place in the industry over the past 20 years-and the likely reasons for these changes. I would also like to dwell a little on the future and some of the key issues which-may influence the future path and direction of the metals industry.

Vacuum oxygen decarburisation (VOD) is the refining process used by ALZ (Genk, Belgium) for their production of stainless steels. The process consists of three stages: oxygen blowing at a pressure of 100 mbar, degassing, and reduction of the slag with ferrosilicon at 5 mbar. The magnesia-chromite bricks used in the slag zone of the ladles suffer from acute wear. In this paper results obtained from a program to improve the refractory life span are presented. The dominant wear phenomena were identified with an electron microscopy study of bricks taken from different locations in the ladle. Concurrently a dynamic model for the vacuum oxygen decarburisation (VOD) refining process was developed. The model calculates the elementsÆ oxidation rate during the blowing oxygen stage and allows the continuous calculation of the change of the metal, slag and gas composition throughout the VOD process. From these activities a general scheme of the refractory wear was worked out and measures to improve the refractory life were proposed and implemented.

Whereas traditionally, stable isotope research has been directed towards resource exploration and development, it is finding more frequentapplications in helping to assess the impacts of resource utilization upon ecosystems. Among the many pursuits, two themes are evident:(1) tracing the transport and conversions of pollutants in the environment and(2) better understanding of the interplay among environmental receptors, e.g. food web studies. Stable isotope data are used primarily to identify the presence of pollutants in the environment and with a few exceptions, the consequence of their presence must be assessed by other techniques. Increasing attention has been given to the isotopic composition of humans with many potential applications in areas such as paleodiets, medicine, and criminology. In this brief overview examples are used from the Pacific Rim to illustrate the above concepts. Stable isotope data will undoubtedly play an increasing role in multi-disciplinary research in the Pacific Rim. However, consideration should be given to more effective strategies, e.g. networking, for pursuing large scale problems such as long range circulation of pollutants.

Late-Archean banded iron formation (BIF)-hosted deposits in the Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia are less well understood compared to the larger Paleoproterozoic, Superior-type BIFhosted deposits of the Hamersley Province. The Weld Range greenstone belt, in the Murchison Domain of the Yilgarn Craton, hosts two Archean, high-grade deposits, Madoonga (68 Mt resource at 57.7 wt per cent Fe) and Beebyn (62 Mt resource at 59.6 wt per cent Fe, ASX announcement 2008). Five main types of high-grade (>55 wt per cent Fe) iron mineralisation at Weld Range each display characteristic grades, tonnage, and contaminant levels, which affect exploration strategies and beneficiation methods:1. ‘Residual’ ore formed as a result of two generations of hypogene alteration of BIF. The first alteration phase replaced silica-rich bands with siderite and/or Fe-rich dolomite; the second phase involved the removal of carbonate gangue minerals and the concentration of residual Fe oxide-rich bands in the BIF via volume reduction. The product is a high-grade, high-tonnage Fe orebody, with minor contaminants.2. Magnetite-bearing shear and fault zones cut BIF along lithological contacts. These zones of secondary magnetite formed as a result of the addition of hypogene magnetite via the circulation of Fe-rich, hypogene hydrothermal fluids through BIF. This type of mineralisation produces narrow (low-tonnage), high-grade magnetite-rich ore zones with high levels of contaminants (eg SiO2, Al2O3) due to the difficulty in mining these zones.3. Specular haematite ± quartz-bearing shear and fault zones cut residual orebodies and magnetite bearing structures. They share similar characteristics to magnetite-bearing structures.4. Goethite-haematite supergene ore zones are controlled by brittle faults that cut BIF. These faults promoted the flow of supergene fluids through BIF and resulted in large ore zones with variable Fe grades and contaminants.5. Detrital deposits comprise transported BIF fragments and are intensely goethite-haematite supergene-altered. These orebodies are locally extensive, with moderate Fe grades.

The discovery of minerals in any community, especially precious minerals, gives a sense of hope and optimism about development prospects within the community. However, the euphoria surrounding such a find could be short lived if the wrong perception is created at the inception of the project, that the exploitation of the mineral resource will pose a serious problem to the community. The socio-economic impact can be negative or positive but if not properly handled, the negatives will outweigh the positives. Illegal mining activity, popularly known as Galamsey in Ghana, is a typical example of the negative impact of the mineral industry. Galamsey activities have resulted in an increase in school drop-out rate, pollution of water bodies affecting entire communities bringing a lot of health problems, destruction of farm lands, destruction of rail lines resulting in transportation problems, armed robbery, prostitution, just to mention a few. The improvement of the water supply system in the surrounding communities, implementation of sustainable development programs, improvement in the infrastructure, are just a few examples of positive socio-economic impact.Factors responsible for the socio-economic and environmental impact include: the unwillingness of most companies to invest substantial resources to deal with environmental issues, lack of adequate professionals with the requisite appreciation for environmental issues related to their activities, realisation that support of surrounding communities is key to successful operations, the now globally accepted view that multinational companies should invest in the socio-economic lives of the surrounding communities, etc. In order to ensure the prevention of the negative impact of mining activities on local communities, there should be a paradigm shift in the way the training for the new crop of mining and metallurgical engineers have been structured in the past, social contract with the local communities must be drawn and implemented; it must not be an imposition on the communities but rather a contract arising out of extensive interactions between the industries and the local communities. Environmental awareness has reached a level where communities affected by the minerals industry, to a very large extent, know what they should tolerate and what they should not. There is therefore the need to ensure that effective systems are in place to exploit mineral resources without damaging the environment.

A method that optimises mining complexes that are comprised of multiple processing destinations, open pits and underground operations is presented. Mining, blending, processing and transportation decision variables are simultaneously optimised while accounting for geological uncertainty. The method uses a simulated annealing algorithm at different decision levels to generate a stochastic-based extraction sequence and processing policies. This iron ore mine site, located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, commenced operations in 1998, with ore derived by mining of open-cut pits in Channel Iron Deposits (CIDs). A portion of the ore extracted at the mine is processed at wet processing plants that produce both ore saleable product and waste fines (i.e. tailings) slurry. The waste fines produced at the wet plants are presently stored within Waste Fines Cells (WFCs).Waste fines cells A (WFCA) and B (WFCB) are located within an Autonomous Haul System (AHS) area and consist of embankments that span the width of the pit in east-west alignments. Technical studies and design analyses were carried out to support embankment raises and ongoing development of the WFCs. During operation and development of the WFCs, a multitude of simultaneous activities took place to the immediate north and south of WFCA respectively. These activities included the construction of the embankment raises using the AHS fleet, mining of the CID to not only mine the ore but to also create future deposition space for WFCB, blasting next to the WFC embankments as part of the mining activities, seepage collection and dewatering of the pit in the vicinity of the WFC.This paper discusses the material characteristics, design approach, construction staging and equipment requirements, blasting near embankments, water management, facility consequence category and closure concept.CITATION:Boshoff, J J, 2018. This paper describes the programing and specification requirements which affected the choice of excavation methods on the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop (M.U.R.L.). The various methods that were chosen are briefly described, and the three most used are compared in more detail. Excavation rates, cycle times and other statistics are compared for full face tunnel boring, full face drill and blast, and heading and bench using a road header excava- ting machine. The length of tunnel excavated is sufficient to enable meaningful statistics to be presented and the significant specifi- cation and geological factors are described to weight the statistics where necessary for purposes of comparison. Average tender prices are given for excavation and primary support to indicate the reimbursement sought by contractors to carry out this type of tunnelling.

Economic recovery of gold from complex gold ores, including poly-metallic deposits, is impacted by the presence of cyanide-soluble base metals. These base metals can create both a metallurgical challenge plus waste handling and disposal challenges. Base metals such as Cu and Zn compete for the cyanide reagent and often increase the total cyanide consumption to the point of making precious metals recovery uneconomic. In addition, the accumulation of base metals in cyanide solutions represent a challenge for cyanide detoxification and waste water treatment as these metals report to waste sludge. Such sludge requires safe handling and disposal, with possible long-term liabilities.Base metal interference can be removed with sulfidisation-acidification-recycling-thickening (SART) process technology. SART liberates the base metal from the cyanide complex and precipitates the metal as an insoluble sulfide product that can be recovered as a commercial grade concentrate. With the base metal precipitated, the cyanide can be regenerated as free cyanide and recycled to the gold extraction circuit.BioteQ completed laboratory testing for two projects, one employing cyanide leaching of copper-gold sulfide flotation concentrate and one employing a Merrill Crowe process, to determine the effectiveness of SART to remove and recover Cu and Zn in high-grade sulfide concentrates and to reduce the impact of cyanide-soluble metals on gold recovery and cyanide consumption. The Cayeli volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit is located in Black Sea region of Turkey. Cayeli Bakir Isletmeleri (CBI) was formed as a joint venture between Inmet (Canada) and Eti Holding (Turkey). CBI is processing complex copper/zinc sulphide ores. The Cayeli concentrator was commissioned in 1994, with a design capacity of 600 000 tonnes/year. The grinding circuit was a classical rod mill/ball mill combination. The rod mill was converted to a primary ball mill in May 1997. The reasons for conversion were to use mill power more efficiently and eliminate feed interruptions during rod charging. The grinding circuit now has a primary ball mill in open circuit, and a secondary ball mill in closed circuit with hydrocyclones. Classification was originally done in two stages with hydrocyclones. Both mill discharges were combined and pumped to a primary cyclopack having two, 500 mm diameter cyclones. Primary cyclone overflow was pumped to a secondary cyclopack for further classification. The secondary cyclopack had ten, 200 mm cyclones. Both unit underflows were fed to a secondary ball mill by gravity. The secondary cyclone overflow, typically 62-64 per cent passing 36 ¦m, at around 42 per cent solids (w/w) was fed to flotation circuit. In order to increase circuit capacity to 1 000 000 tonnes/year and to improve control over the grinding circuit, it was decided to convert the classification circuit from two stage to one stage. For this purpose, six Warman Cavex cyclones having 400 mm diameter were installed. Now, the combined primary and secondary ball mill discharge was classified in single stage with the Warman cyclones in closed circuit with the secondary ball mill. The cyclone overflow goes directly to the copper rougher circuit as flotation feed. The grinding circuit is producing a flotation feed of 70 per cent passing 36 ¦m. The change over to single stage classification at Cayeli was successful. A mill throughput of 1 000 000 tonne/year is being achieved with better control over classification, and improved grind size. Results and comparison between the two classification circuits are presented in the paper.

It is no longer satisfactory to assess the value of a coking coal on its intrinsic properties alone, its value depends upon its behaviour as a component in a blend. No single test can be used to make this assessment, it can only be made by carrying out a suite of tests. The quality parameters which are considered desirable, and which have widespread acceptance, have been discussed and their application to the blending of coals from New South Wales and New Zealand has been reported and discussed. Blending can be utilised to offset deficiencies, or capitalise on advantages, of the individual coals making up a blend. Coals can be blended, which alone are poorly coking, but which have compensating features. Blending also allows better exploitation of coking coal Reserves..
