From experience in the design and operation of power station combustion facilities in most mainland Australian States, involving a wide range of black coals and lignites, and in the specification and procurement of coal supplies for power station use, techniques for the optimisation of coal resource development and power generation utilisation have been developed to ensure compatibility between characteristics of the selected coals and power station design. These techniques include computer data bases for resource data handling and computer simulation of coal-fired boilers for determining coal property cost effects. Data Base Systems allow results of coal analyses to be efficiently handled, to assist in the review of the relevance of resource data to the coal sections proposed to be mined and the coal fractions proposed to be marketed. Data Base Systems also facilitate the marshalling of coal quality data into basic utilisation format to enable a proper utilisation review and analysis of the certainty and scatter of coal properties. Computer simulation of the effects of different coal properties on the capital and operating cost of power stations is achieved by establishing conceptual design parameters of the major items of plant to relate the variations in coal specification to equipment size and type. Variations in power station budget costs can then be determined using the computer model for variations in coal specification.

Assessment of mineral reserves in any ore- body hinges on both mineralisation characteris- tics and the economics of extraction. The mineral reserves statement depends on interpre- tation of diamond drill information by geolo- gists, determination of the production plan and operating costs by mining and metallurgical engineers and prediction of future income by economists. The techniques used to generate the mineral reserves statement for Bougainville Copper Limited in 1969 are described and the accuracy of predictions discussed. Preliminary results from a geostatistical reassessment are comp- ared with the ore zone model, blast hole data and concentrator reconciled production results.

Acid generating sulfidic tailings covering a surface area of approximately ten hectares have been deposited in the historic mining area of Lavrion in Greece. For the development of a remediation strategy, the performance of three alternative acid generation control techniques was assessed under actual field conditions. The techniques involved the application of dry covers, including a synthetic HDPE liner and a compacted clay layer with capillary barriers. Furthermore, the potential formation of a low permeability hardpan layer at the sulfidic tailings surface by limestone addition was investigated. The field tests covered an area of 2500 m2, which was divided in equal quadrants, corresponding to the control plot and the three alternative remedial options. To monitor the amount and quality of percolated water, lysimeters were installed beneath the four plot areas. Based on the monitoring results over a period of six years, due to the dry climate encountered in the Lavrion area, a low amount of water percolates through the pyrites if no action is taken (control area), corresponding to 20 - 25 mm per year. This water is highly acidic, pH = 1.2, and contains a heavy load of contaminants, eg Fe 40 g/L, Zn 15 g/L, and As 1.5 g/L. The HDPE cover eliminated the percolation of water into the material for a period of five years, whereas thereafter the volume of leachates increased to values similar to those recorded in the control plot. The water collected in the lysimeter of the clay cover has been minimal corresponding to approximately five per cent of the drainage volume produced in the control area. In the fourth plot, which involved limestone addition to sulfidic tailings, the volume of drainage initially collected was almost double compared to the control area. After three years of monitoring, significant reduction in the amount of percolated water was observed, attributed to the formation of a cemented layer (hardpan), at a depth of 40-80 cm from the testpad surface.

Zinifex Rosebery Mine is a lead-zinc underground mining operation located at the base of Mount Black, on the West Coast of Tasmania. Mining activities at the Rosebery Mine have been undertaken for over 100 years, and it has been operating in its current form for over 60 years. A large surface and underground exploration drilling program over the last 18 months has increased the mineÆs expected mine life from five to 12 years, with expectations that over the next 18 months as the program continues this will swell to 20 plus years. Zinifex Ltd secured Rosebery Mine in April 2004 and commissioned a detailed life-of-mine (LOM) study on all aspects of the operation. One of the most detailed sections of this report was on the state of the current ventilation system. It was identified in this report that for mining at the current depth of approximately 1100 m to continue a minimum 30 per cent increase in ventilation quantity was essential, as well as a likely requirement for a refrigerant cooling plant for each of the two deepest panels, the K and P lenses. It was identified that Zinifex did not have personnel with the expertise in underground refrigeration to manage and implement a project of this nature. A second report was commissioned with Bluhm Burton Engineering (BBE), a South African firm specialising in both surface and underground large-scale refrigeration plants. BBE concluded that two refrigeration plants were required to provide the necessary cooling power in the lower sections of the mine. In 2005, with BBE as technical consultants, Zinifex Rosebery Mine embarked on a project to commission two underground refrigeration units capable of lowering the wet bulb temperature at the decline face by four degrees centigrade. In 1980 Pancontinental Mining Limited decided that while the Jabiluka uranium project was still a major focus of the company's efforts some diversification was necessary. At this time it was decided to include precious metals in Pancon's exploration and acquisition objectives. As a result the now Paddington Gold tenements were acquired, explored and developed. Today, it rates as the 6th largest gold mine in Australia and at an expanded throughput of 1.2 million tonnes per year of ore it will produce about 110,000 ozs of gold per year. Following extensive exploration activities by Pancon's Exploration Division the Operations Division continued with development drilling finally proving up a reserve of about 8.4 million tonnes at an average grade of 3.2 g/t. An in- house preliminary feasibility study was followed by a two phase feasibility study by Davy McKee. This resulted in a recommendation to the Pancon Board of Directors to develop Paddington with an annual throughput capacity of 875,000 tonnes. This study begins with the semivario- gram modelling of variables rutile grade and clay content from a beach sand rutile deposit. This is followed by two dimensional block kriging. The deposit was divided into blocks of 30 x 30 x 1.5 m dimensions and the kriged estimate together with the associated kriging variances for each variable within each block were determined. Finally, using the results of the krig- ing program and considering the acceptable limit of clay content together with the cutoff grade for rutile, a method for optimization of mineable thickness and hence the tonnage of ore was applied and the results were dis- Cussed.

The Wirtgen surface miner was investigated for application to the Cloud Break iron ore deposit since it can selectively mine thin seams and there is no requirement for drilling and blasting or primary crushing as the surface miner cuts and breaks the rock to secondary cone crusher feed size. A physical metallurgical study of the surface miner run-of-mine (ROM) from Cloud Break was conducted to better understand the product size distribution, amount of -31.5 +6.3 mm lump produced, lump stability and physical metallurgical quality compared to conventional drill and blast techniques. Since the Cloud Break mine was not in production, the lump product from crushing and screening of surface miner ROM was compared with product simulations using traditional premining physical metallurgical processing techniques including drop testing of PQ diamond core. Drop test conditioning is widely used in the iron ore industry to simulate blasting, crushing and screening at the mine and subsequent product degradation during handling from mine to port to predict both the amount of lump product on ship and the size distribution of the fines and lump. The size distributions of surface miner ROM for hard, medium and friable ore types show very tight size distributions with very little above 100 - 150 mm, about 60 per cent of the distribution between 75 and 6.3 mm, with less below 1 mm compared to conventional drill and blast ROM. Crushing, screening and drop test conditioning of the surface miner ROM produced more lump in equivalent ore types compared to drill and blast techniques or their breakage simulation using PQ diamond core. The higher lump yield from the surface miner was also confirmed by pilot scale crushing of some 7400 t of surface miner ROM from the Cloud Break trial pit. The lump produced from surface miner ROM was quite stable and showed similar low degradation characteristics to lump simulated from drill and blasting techniques. Product size distribution simulations using conditioned crushed lump from 1 m diameter Bauer hole samples were found to compare well with processed PQ core samples and surface miner product from trial mining at Cloud Break. The Bauer sample method is therefore considered to be a very useful close simulation to actual lump production, although the lump yield is lower.

The Split Rock low grade copper prospect was discovered in 1969 by Cyprus Mines Corporation using stream geochemistry. Cyprus "Imes carried out geochemical and geophysical investigations, geological mapping, and percussion and diamond drilling, and concluded that the grade of mineralisation was too low (0.1% copper) to be of interest. In the present study, the geology was remapped and very substantial differences from the previous observations are recorded. (lineraliced acid dykes in a 1 000 foot hole drilled by Cyprus Mines had a total inter- section of almost 300 feet with an average crade of 0.4% copper. Surrounding drill holes at distances of 500 feet did not intersect +hese dykes. This group of drill holes occupies a small part of an area about 2 km by 1 km which was affected by intense quartz sericite pyrite alteration along many fractures with an associated soil copper anomaly. It may be that the quartz sericite alteraiion with feeble copper mineralisation represents hydrothermal alteration emanating `rom a mineralised intrusion of which the dykes mentioned above are off shoots.

The Selwyn Gold-Copper Mine is located 150 km southeast of Mount Isa within Proterozoic units of the Mount Isa inlier (Figure 1). Mineralization in the mine area is associated with strongly sheared ironstones and iron rich schists at the base of the mid- Proterozoic Staveley Formation. The ironstone horizons outcrop as a series of dominant ridges over a 10 km strike. Economic gold-copper mineralization has been defined in 4 separate zones within a 3.5 km length of the outcropping ridges. A current combined geological resource for the deposits is 5.3 million tonnes of 5.0 g/t Au and 2.02 Cu. Weathering of the deposits has resulted in a pronounced vertical zonation of mineralogy, especially copper, within the ore zones. This has produced 3 separate ore types which require different treatment techniques. The categorization is based on copper content and zones are termed leached (surface), oxide and sulfide. Ore removed from the pits will be mainly leached and oxidized with minor sulfide near the pits final depths, while the underground ore will be from the sulfide zone with minor oxide in some areas.

The rapid industrialisation of the world was driven by an improved ability to utilise chemical energy. Unfortunately harnessing explosive energy did not come cheaply given the hundreds of lost lives. However, the modem explosives industry has made significant technological achievements, for explosives are now considered to be both safe and extremely effective. Upon closer inspection, it would appear the key to this achievement has been the development of initiation systems. While the focus may have been originally on safety, modem developments have concentrated upon harnessing the benefits of initiation control. Before attempting to gaze into the future, it is worth reviewing some of the significant advances that have occurred.

Lungfish and crayfish inhabit continental ecosystems similar to those of their ancient counterparts in the Permian (lungfish) and Triassic (crayfish) Periods, exhibiting similar burrowing behaviors to live, breed, and escape desiccation. Identification of their burrows in the geologic record when body fossils are absent has relied on the overall gross morphology of the burrows and the process of elimination. A method of burrow identification has been developed by evaluating burrow structures in an attempt to designate architectural and surficial burrow morphologies that uniquely reflect the distinctive burrowing mechanism of a particular organism. The information from this method defines the burrowing signatures of an organism, enabling the differentiation of their burrows even when fossil evidence is lacking.The lungfish constructed simple, vertical burrows with bulbous terminations. The burrow walls exhibit fine, horizontal to sub-horizontal striae and vertical to sub-vertical striae near the top of the bulbous terminus, reflecting a burrowing style similar to modern burrowing lungfish. The crayfish constructed simple, vertical burrows to complex burrows with multiple branching and chamber development. The burrow surface ornamentations exhibit horizontal to sub-horizontal ridges, vertical to sub-vertical groupings of scratches, mud- and lag-liners, knobby and hummocky textures, and body impressions, which reflect the burrowing mechanism of the crayfish.

The Windarra nickel deposits known to date comprise two sulphide orebodies located at Mount Windarra and South Windarra. These orebodies, which are 15 km apart, lie within an ultramafic complex at or near its footwall contact with a banded iron formation. The Windarra deposits are 270 km north-northeast of Kalgoorlie in West- ern Australia which was the centre of a major nickel exploration programme fol- lowing the discovery of nickel deposits at Kambalda in 1966. Surface indications of the Mount Windarra orebody were discovered in 1969 by Mr. Ken Shirley while prospect- ing the Laverton area for Poseidon Ltd. (then NL). The mineralisation was loc- ated by systematic prospecting for goss- anous material associated with aero-mag- netic anomalies and ultramafic rocks. The South Windarra deposit was dis- covered in 1971 by the Union-Hanna- Homestake Joint Venture, by exploring along the strike extension of the mount Windarra ultramafic-banded iron format- ion contact. Finding a balance between practical and acceptable groundwater management, and providing for the needs and impacts of mining developments remains a challenge. The changes that accompanied the recent implementation of water reforms have provided greater flexibility for the water manager and greater certainty for the resource user. However uncertainty associated with understanding of complex aquifer systems, balanced against providing for the needs of mining developments, the rights of existing water resource users and expectations of the broader community have not diminished the conflicting issues faced by water resource managers and resource developers. Licensing under the Water Act 2000 provides the regulatory link with the taking of water for water supply purposes or as a consequence of the mining activity. This paper outlines key elements of sustainable water resource management involving certainty of access to water and adaptive environmental management that are delivered through conditioning the water licences issued for the particular mining development. Implementation of this approach is illustrated through a case study involving the BHP Billiton Cannington Mine in North West Queensland.

The Department of Conservation (DOC) manages public conservation land throughout New Zealand in terms of section 6 of the Conservation Act 1987. In brief, this requires DOC to manage the natural and historic resources of the land; promote the benefits of conservation to present and future generations; provide information about conservation; to foster recreation on the land; and allow for its use for tourism.   Locally the department's Tauranga Area Office manages approximately 60 000 hectares of Conservation Park (known as the Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park) which includes early gold mining relics and former bush tramways associated with the logging and the mining industries. The Department has recently developed the Kaimai Heritage Plan which seeks to restore some of the relics and encourage involvement by the local communities in the restoration and interpretation of their history in the hills. It provides a unique opportunity for the Department to help bring alive for New Zealanders an important, and often overlooked, part of our history as a nation in a stunning natural setting.   The purpose of this presentation is to: +        display the endeavour and ingenuity of the early miners and loggers, the relics of those industries and the dramatic environment in which they worked; +        identify the linkages between those early industries and gold mining today; and +        promote a co-operative approach to heritage and recreation management involving all facets of the community.

Does the purpose originally described in the Initial Public Offering to raise equity remain wholly relevant? What commodity sectors and geographies should we focus on? Or should we be conserving funds until asset prices or project costs provide greater assurance of value to shareholders? Feed ore variability, the major disturbance into a mineral processing plant receives considerable attention operationally, and at research and strategic levels to ensure that the throughput of the ore are maintained at all times whilst encouraging a sustainable approach to recovering the valuable minerals from ore bodies. Effort and insights from mineralogical and processing characterisation (eg. ore hardness) of sub-ore body domains allows sequencing for processing to ensure consistency and throughput for the size sensitive grinding unit processes. Optimising the blast fragmentation has benefit as does pre-concentration using ore sorting. Blending of ore domains with different characteristics is common for operations. In recent years a number of technologies have become available for on-line and more rapid assessment of ore and have been discussed in a recent paper by Cameron et.al. (2016) as an opportunity for further utilisation of mine-to-mill (and mine to product) strategies. Current concepts have focused on extensive characterisation of ores so that current control practices can be realised and made more effective with relatively slow measurements and actuation.
