The Waterview Connection will complete Auckland’s long-planned Western Ring Route, a 48 km north-south motorway alternative to State Highway 1 that bypasses the central city to the west. The project involves construction of 5 km of new motorway – half of it underground in tunnels – to connect the Southwestern (State Highway 20) and Northwestern (State Highway 16) motorways.The Western Ring Route will link the major population and industrial centres of Manukau, Auckland and North Shore to give the region the connected and resilient strategic road transport system it needs to underpin economic growth and sustainable development. It will also provide a direct motorway link between Auckland’s central business district (CBD) and international airport.The project involves construction of twin 2.4 km driven tunnels with an outside diameter of 14.41 m beneath residential suburbs, a major arterial road and a rail corridor. Enabling works began in January 2012 while tunnel construction using an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) began in November 2013.This presentation introduces the Waterview Connection project, its role in the development of the Auckland motorway network, its procurement process, the alliance delivery model and an overview of the project’s design features and construction progress to date.Design and construction highlights of the presentation include the TBM start-up, turnaround and breakthrough arrangements as well as the experience gained during the first tunnelling drive. A research and testing facility has been developed at Simtars to allow the spontaneous combustion testing of coal on a large scale. In this adiabatic reactor, the coal particle sizing is closer to that which could be found in the goaf and therefore the reaction is more likely to simulate the underground situation. This allows aspects of the spontaneous combustion process and methods for detecting a heating to be investigated which cannot be done in an operational mine. Up to 18 tonnes of run of mine or crushed coal is loaded into the reactor and allowed to self-heat while the temperature and gas profiles within the coal pile are monitored. The gases evolved from the coal are analysed using a fixed gas monitor system and gas chromatography to determine which of the common mine fire indicators and ratios can be used to predict the onset and progress of coal heatings. Benchmarking of the inherent propensity of a coal to spontaneously combust at both the large- and laboratory-scale is also possible by comparing the sample against previously tested samples. It has been found that the coal particle size affects both the time it takes for the coal to react and the location of the developing heating. The heatings generate approximately one metre from the inlet but in the crushed coal case do not progress to an advanced heating stage until the æhot spotÆ migrates towards the coal surface where there is an increased oxygen supply. Physical properties such as the compressive strength of the coal also affect the heating size and the time it takes for a heating to develop. Higher strength coals appear to oxidise more slowly and therefore take longer to self-heat as oxidation of the coal is the heat-generating step in the spontaneous combustion process. The best indicators of the state of the heating were found to be CO make and GrahamÆs ratio which are independent of air flow. Investigation of a potential spontaneous combustion should begin as soon as the CO make or GrahamÆs ratio exceed the background levels. The results from the tests undertaken on a number of Queensland and NSW coals are reported here together with the implications for the mining industry.

This paper presents a brief account of the plant which has been developed at Port Pirie to recover, by vacuum distillation, the greater part of the zinc content of desilverized lead. The present plant is an experimental unit, which is run in conjunction with the normal refinery practice, but can be cut out of the circuit. It will shortly be dismantled and duplicate units will be built on the sites chosen for the final plant installation.The unit described here has treated flows of 16 to 37 tons per hour of desilverized lead, to recover 90 to 95 per cent of the zinc contained in it. It is not intended here to detail all aspects of the vacuum dezincing operation, nor the developments which precededthe adoption of this design. The essential features of the present plant will be described and, where these are peculiar to the present experimental location, the intended alteration for the final plant will also be mentioned. OUTLINE OF PLANT AND PROCESSLead issues from the continuous desilverizing kettle at about 350° C. containing about 0·57 per cent Zn. It is conveyed by a tiled launder to the preheater, where it is heated to 580-620° C.Hot lead from the preheater enters the vacuum vessel via a barometric leg. From a reservoir holding about 19 tons of lead it falls by gravity in a thin film exposed to high vacuum (20-50 microns)3 and leaves the vessel via a barometric leg, entering the lead pot. The lead leaves this pot at 540-560° C., containing 0·03 to 0·06 per cent Zn, which is removed, together with residual antimony of 0.02 to 0·06 per cent, by a separate final refining process.

Wall control blasting practices are necessary to reduce the impact of blasting on mine faces but can also have a significant negative impact on mine productivity and operating costs. The conventional practice in deep open pit mines is to use so-called trim blasts adjacent to pit walls. To provide burden relief these trim blasts have fewer rows than full production blasts and are fired to a cleared free-face; hence they are termed æunchokedÆ. This practice leads to scheduling constraints on the pit operations and can cause ore dilution due to excessive muckpile movement. The use of such trim blasts stems from the perception that increased wall damage results from æchokedÆ blasts. These concerns are based on the unproven assumptions that blast vibration levels and explosive gas penetration increase with increased blast burden and face confinement. This paper describes work undertaken as part of a major investigation into wall control blasting at the KCGM Fimiston Mine, Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. It details a study to assess damage effects due to blast burden. Borehole air pressure measurements and borehole video camera inspections were done behind a series of single blastholes drilled with varying burden distances, as well as behind a dedicated trim blast and a full production blast. It was found that the measured damage effects, including visible rock cracking, dilation, and the limited extent of gas penetration behind the blastholes, did not vary significantly with burden or blast type for the cases tested. This result was in complete agreement with detailed vibration measurements conducted by Blair and Armstrong (2001) during the study, which found that vibration was independent of blast burden. As a result of these investigations, changes to the blasting practices at the mine were implemented. Dedicated trim blasts and free-face blasting have been replaced by modified production blasts and the practice of æchokingÆ blasts has been introduced. This has resulted in a significant improvement in productivity and cost savings without compromising pit wall integrity.

Al ores arriving at the works which contain more than 3% sulphur, together with all sands and other fine residues, are delivered to the roasting department. Those that are in a coarse condition are first sent to the crushing plant, consisting of 15 in. x 9 in. jaw crushers and two No. 5 Krupp mills. The ore is here crushed through a quarter mesh screen. Any pyritic concentrates high in sulphur are given a preliminary roasting, to bring the sulphur contents down to about 12 % and the roasted material is delivered to the H. H. charge-making bins. Here the various ores, sands, residues, roasted pyrites, together with about 12 % of limestone, are made up into I-ton charges in hopper trucks with bottom discharge. The trucks are elevated by hydraulic lifts to a tramway running over the roasting furnaces, and the contents are dropped into hoppers over each furnace, from whence the mixture is fed into the centre of each furnace by means of a Challenge ore-feeder.

Minerals are valuable resources and critical elements for a broad range of biological and technological applications, including technological developments to improve energy efficiency and the global movement to promote a low-carbon economy. However, in order to extract these critical metals, large amounts of waste and toxic chemicals are generated, as well as the use of high energy and large amounts of water consumption. Froth flotation is one of the most commonly used processes to separate and collect high-value minerals, but it still has some limitations, including low flotation efficiency performances using existing collectors and other reagents. Therefore, there is an urgent need to design and develop new metal-specific collectors to more efficiently separate and recover valuable minerals and to allow bulk water recovery from flocculated tailings. In this research, we propose to use our newly designed and synthesised novel collectors derived from a type of vitamin E (α-tocopherol), a relatively inexpensive and non-toxic natural molecule. As a potential collector-building block, α-tocopherol has a long hydrophobic carbon chain that facilitates the attachment to air bubbles during the froth flotation process. In addition, the phenol group of this molecule can be easily modified to incorporate various functional groups for targeting different types of minerals. Furthermore, α-tocopherol can be converted into a monomer for polymerisation by the reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) process, which can provide us with polymer based-collectors with high precision control of molecular weight and architecture. So far, small-scale qualitative experiments on α-tocopherol-based collectors have been performed with good results, which indicates the feasibility of these compounds as novel collectors for improved froth flotation processes.

Many projects fail because project performance in unfavourable economic conditions was not anticipated at the investment decision stage. This type of failure may have been avoided through the selection of a strategy that enables the project to perform well under a range of possible future economic conditions (a ærobustÆ strategy); rather than an æoptimalÆ strategy for expected future conditions that will never eventuate. This paper describes a method of rapidly generating mine plans for a number of project strategies, and then evaluating it against a representative range of equally likely economic conditions. The key performance indicators derived for each strategy are the mean value and the distribution of values (variance). A prudent investor will identify prospective strategies not only on the merit of highest mean values (as a proxy for economic reward), but also on the probability of not meeting specified investment hurdles (a proxy for risk). A robust strategy will achieve its financial objective even under adverse economic variations. This paper focuses on the effect of commodity price uncertainty; particularly around the choice of mining and processing capacity levels. Results from enumerating 2000 prices scenarios against 63 strategy combinations show how processing and mining capacity can be manipulated to manage the risk-reward trade-off.

The development of the carbonization of brown coal briquettes to produce a hard char suitable for use in place of imported hard coke has continued in Victoria, and an experimental carbonization plant has recently been commissioned at Morwell by the Gas and Fuel Corpora.tion to assess the prospects for the commercial production and marketing of hard char in Victoria. The char offers advantages in its very low ash content and its uniform lump size, while the indications are that it could be marketed at a price competitive with that of imported hard coke. The hard char is unique amongst metallurgical fuels in combining a high reactivity with high physical strength, and research by the University of Melbourne into its utilization in foundry cupolas for melting iron has shown how modifications could be made to take advantage of these properties. An 18 inch experimental cupola has been built to test in practice the predictions made from this fundamental research.INTRODUCTIONSteady development has continued in Victoria from the promising laboratory researches at the University of Melbourne which were reported to the 1955 Annual Conference of The Institute (Worner, 1956). This work had shown that a hard lump char could be produced by the high temperature carbonization of standard industrial briquettes by careful control of the heating conditions, and that the special briquetting techniques adopted in Germany were unnecessary with Yallourn brown coal. Continuation of this research has led to the refinement of carbonization techniques and has increased the strength of the char until it has equalled that of conventional metallurgical cokes.

Three stages are involved in the complete design and evaluation of an open cut mine. These are:1. design of the optimu,m ultimate pit, and selectionof the optimum mill capacity,2. development of production schedules, with intermediate pit designs, and3. evaluation of the project, based on factors from stages 1 and 2, by means of discounted cash flow analysis.Stage 1 requires relatively complete information on metal distribution, metallurgical performance, and cost factors, which is used to design a series of pits, corresponding to a range of milling rates.For each milling rate considered there is a unique pit design which maximizes operating profitability. The computer outlines this design (in terms of size, shape, and location; tons and grade of ore; and tons of waste), by considering the effect on profitability of mining each block in the mineralized inventory in relation to every other block which would be affected by its removal.The computer selects only those blocks for mining which result in an overall increase in profitability, maintaining pre-determined wall slope conditions throughout.Both operating profitabilities and capital costs increase with throughput, and the two curves will combine to produce a flat peak in net profitabilities at a certain rate, with its associated pit design.Stage 2 can maximize head grades early in the life of the operation. This increases the projected present value, but there are good arguments for maintaining steady head grades throughout the life of the mine.A modification of the programme used in Stage 1 is used here.Stage 3 is a conventional discounted cash flow analysis, using factors obtained in stages 1 and 2. It can be computerised, but a manual treatment is probably just as fast overall.

Mechanical flotation machine design is typically based on hydrodynamic analysis, with scale-up calculated by geometric proportionality. End users often specify and purchase machines on the basis of retention time, characterised by the æ$/m3Æ approach; they may also consider the manufacturerÆs installed base. In some applications, end users also consider specific energy and the impact of energy consumption on operational costs. In other cases, a decision may be based on machine type (forced-air versus self-aspirating) and perceived metallurgical or operational advantages of one machine type over the other. With regard to metallurgical performance efficient bubble-particle contact is very important and is primarily influenced by two factors:the concentration and size distribution of bubbles in the machineÆs contact zone (the volume enclosed by the disperser); and the number of times that slurry is pumped through the contact zone. The second factor is a function of the machineÆs pumping rate and its retention time. Field data show that pumping efficiency is independent of aeration rate. In this paper, a new dimensionless number for the characterisation of flotation efficiency is presented. Following the United Nations initiative to fingerprint the origin of conflict materials, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development has decided to fund a pilot study on coltan ores. Since 2006, our working group has been investigating columbite- tantalite (coltan) mineralisation, especially in Africa, also within the wider framework of establishing certified trade chains. More than 300 samples were obtained from the worldÆs major coltan producing areas. Special attention is, however, directed to samples and concentrates from Ta-Nb-Sn provinces in Africa: Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Mozambique, Ethiopia and Namibia. Using state of the art analytical tools, we investigate mineralogical and chemical parameters obtained from columbite-tantalite ores and concentrates in order to distinguish between ore provinces, likely even down to the deposit scale. Methods employed include fully automated electron microscopy (mineral liberation analysis), electron microprobe analysis (major and minor elements), laser ablation plasma-source mass spectrometry (trace elements and U-Pb dating), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (bulk major and trace elements), X-ray diffraction analysis (mineralogy and structure) and thermal-ionisation mass-spectrometry (U-Pb dating). Major and trace element concentration patterns, mineral assemblages in the ore concentrates, and zoning characteristics in the different pegmatites from Africa distinctly differ from each other. Furthermore, the following age populations are evident:Archaean (>2.6 Ga);Palaeoproterozoic (1.9 - 2.1 Ga);early Neoproterozoic (æKibaranÆ; 0.98 - 0.93 Ga); andlate Neoproterozoic to early Palaeozoic (ca 0.5 Ga). Currently, we focus on the resolution of the fingerprinting system from region via ore province down to deposit scale. Our preliminary analytical results indicate that a certification scheme including fingerprinting of sources of coltan ores is feasible.

Common brattice cloths in use in Australian coal mines are compared by permeability measurements. The respective advantages of twill weave and tarpauling* weave cloths are listed, and the improvements to be obtained in the ventilation of a mine by using tarpauling cloths instead of the commonly used twill cloths are stressed. Plastic cloths are widely used overseas and are briefly discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe onset of extensive full-scale mechanization in Australian coal mines during the past few years has increased attention given to the ventilation of working places. Many inadequacies of the present system have been brought to light and not the least of these is connected with the use of brattice cloth, both in directing the flow of air around the face and in acting as a temporary sealing mechanism. A well-constructed line of brattice will only provide fair ventilation for a distance of 100 ft. Beyond this point the volume or air reaching the face falls off rapidly.Some of the shortcomings associated' with the use of brattice cloths are:1. Hurried installation, necessitated by a rapid advance, often results in poor workmanship with, consequently, an excessively high leakage rate.2. High places caused by falls of roof are difficult and time-consuming to seal.3. Curtains, in lines of brattice crossing transport routes, are difficult to maintain.4. The shock behaviour of a material represents its response to very high strain rate loading at pressures associated with those generated by explosive and blasting loadings. Three sets of shock wave experiments have been conducted to determine shock Hugoniot behaviour, spall tensile strength and shear strength using a plate impact facility. Embedded manganin stress gauges (ie longitudinal and lateral gauges) and high-speed velocimetry using heterodyne techniques were used for the measurements of stresses, shock velocity and free surface velocity. The gabbro exhibited classic linear Hugoniot equations of state in the US-up (ie shock velocity-particle velocity) plane; while for marble a polymer-like non-linear response was observed. The detailed experimental procedures used to make these measurements are to a great extent standard methods when determining mechanical properties and deformation fields at high strain rate.CITATION:Zhang, Q B and Zhao, J, 2015. This Institute, by nature of its charter, draws on various persons in the mining and metallurgical world of Australasia for its President from year to year, and consequently when the presidential address is given by one of these people the topic. which they generally select is a topic to which they are accustomed and on which they are able to speak with authority.As most of you know, my prime object in life has been concerned with steelmaking, so tonight you can steel yourself to the thought that you are going to be spoken to about steelmaking.Even if that were not the case, and were I not particularly interested in steelmaking, I think it would be appropriate to look at steelmaking in a broad sense on a basis of pure metallurgical interest, because the steel industry is going through as big a revolution today as it went through something over one hundred years ago when Bessemer made a theory become a fact.Bessemer, and as the Americans prefer to think Kelly, separately conceived the idea of blowing cold air through molten pig iron, and, contrary to the then general belief, this did not result in cooling of the metal but succeeded rather in heating it, and in burning out of the rather crude pig iron the impurities which prevented it from becoming a ductile metal.For many years before this, steel had been made in a very small painstaking way by what was known as the crucible process. The pyrite oxidation rate is a process central to both the performance of bio-oxidation heaps, used in the pre-treatment of some refractory gold ores, and to the levels of pollution in acid rock drainage (ARD) from pyritic waste rock dumps. A goal in bio-oxidation heaps is to achieve high oxidation rates in the heap as a whole. In comparison, one way to mitigate the environment impact of ARD, is to reduce the overall oxidation rate in the waste rock dump since pyrite oxidation is the primary pollutant generation process. In both bio-oxidation heaps and waste rock dumps the overall oxidation rate of the pyritic material (the intrinsic oxidation rate) at these sites. Much research has been conducted over the last 40 years or so on the oxidation rate of pyritic material with particular emphasis on the catalytic role played by bacteria. More recently mathematical models and field measurements have clarified the extent to which oxygen transport rates are rate limiting, what the dominant oxygen transport mechanisms are and the physical properties of the heaps which have most impact on these transport rates and on the overall oxidation rate. How the performance of bio-oxidation heaps can be optimised and how the pollution load in drainage from waste rock dumps depends on gas transport mechanisms is briefly reviewed. The sensitive of the overall oxidation rate in bio-oxidation heaps and waste rock dumps to details of the intrinsic oxidation rate is quantified.

Currently, there are several open pit mines with production rates of about 200 000 tpd of ore that are reaching the end of their economic lives. In most cases, the remaining orebody extends to depths greater than 300 m below the pit limit, leaving hundreds of millions of tons of reserves that can only be recovered by means of an underground mining method. One such method used for mass production is block caving. This paper presents a ventilation system for a four-zone block cave mine operation developed on a footprint 1000 m wide and 1200 m long. The system is designed for a mine with a nominal production rate of 120 000 tpd of ore using diesel powered units on the production and reduction levels. It discusses the air quantity requirements for the worst case scenario, which is anticipated to occur five years after the mine has reached its full production capacity. Finally, it summarises the results of computer modelling exercises that were carried out to determine an economic ventilation infrastructure that includes shafts, drifts, main fans, and ventilation control devices.

Northern Star’s Thunderbox Open Pit C-Zone cutback was designed to maximise extraction in a short life excavation; In fresh rock on the western wall this included 20 m to 30 m bench heights with 6.5 m to 10 m berm widths and a 90° pre-split angle. Rock mass quality in this area is generally fair to good, however, there are sections where the dominant foliation runs parallel with the designed pit wall, and more closely spaced, altered, foliation is present: these areas are difficult to predict and prone to failure. Stringent controls and monitoring were required in order to safely access below these areas, in particular the use of slope stability monitoring radar, Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs), re-entry procedures, visual inspections, drone inspections and day-to-day personnel awareness of the hazard. Robust and comprehensively planned remediation was also required after two significant slope failure events where long reach equipment and rope access techniques were utilised to remediate the areas in question safely, but also in a timely manner, such that expected production targets were impacted as little as reasonably practicable. This combination of rigorous risk management and well planned remediation resulted in a successful and complete extraction of the C-Zone cutback with no impact to operational safety.

After some 50 years of worldwide research in relation to coal pillar mechanics and design as well as numerous workshops and technical papers related to these issues there is still some significant disagreement as to the approach one should adopt in the assessment and design of a coal pillar. Of course there are many different types of coal pillars that fulfil a wide range of roles at any particular mine and in this instance it is appropriate to have a 'tailored' approach for each pillar type in relation to the role it fulfils. However where it can become very difficult for the mine operators is when various researchers or consultants use or recommend significantly different approaches for the same type of pillar fulfilling the same role. By 1999 two pillar design techniques had been developed specifically for the Australian underground coal mining industry (ie The University of New South Wales Pillar Design Procedure, UNSW PDP and Analysis of Longwall Tailgate Serviceability, ALTS) and several other pillar design techniques were being practiced by individual consultants. The Australian industry hoped to resolve the issue of what technique to use for each pillar type and role, when it funded UNSW in 2000 to develop a 'Systems Approach to Pillar Design'. The findings of the abovementioned project were published in 2005 and while every attempt was made by UNSW to include the views of various local and overseas researchers and consultants it would be fair to say that a unified approach to pillar design in Australia was not adopted as a result of that project. This is the experience of one country where there has never been one central group solely undertaking such research in relation to pillar design (such as the Chamber of Mines in South Africa). This paper explores the Australian experience in terms of pillar research and what that experience may offer to researchers in Australia and other countries. At the First Australasian Ground Control in Mining Conference (2003) the first 'update' of the ALTS Design Methodology (ie ALTS II) was presented. In subsequent years the ALTS database was continually updated and significantly expanded such that it now includes detailed information in relation to both the tailgate (148 cases) and maingate belt road (58 cases). In addition to tailgate roof support and chain pillar design, the current version of ALTS (referred to as ALTS 2009) includes a maingate belt road roof support design module. This paper is also intended to update and summarise the development and application of the ALTS Design Methodology for longwall gateroad design over the last decade both directly and in the context of coal pillar research conducted in Australia over the last 15 years.

The objective of a mine planning exercise is to plan a safe mine that maximises net present value (NPV) for the project. Two primary elements are key to design of a mine plan optimised to maximise profit: selection of an optimised production rate and selection of an optimised equipment fleet. Both depend upon accurate estimations of capital and operating costs for the equipment and for the life cycle of the mining operation. Once a trial production rate is determined, a primary equipment fleet, ie excavators, haulers, and blasthole drills, can be determined based on material characteristics and haulage distances and gradients. An auxiliary fleet, dozers, road maintainers, service trucks, etc can be determined using less rigid productivity criteria. With an equipment fleet determined, operating and support personnel can be assigned based on shift requirements and equipment operating needs; and material and supply requirements can be estimated. Knowing the areal dimensions of the major equipment items, road widths and repair shop dimensions can be determined. Personnel numbers and supply requirements determine the square metre sizes of offices, change rooms, and storage facilities. Reliable sources of capital and operating unit prices and costs for all these items are referenced in the paper. Once preliminary capital and operating cost estimates are calculated by applying unit costs to equipment, personnel, material and supply needs, potential profit can be tested using DCF techniques. An optimised mine plan can then be determined by testing the potential profitability of multiple mine production rates. Because of the economies of scale, full capital and operating cost estimates must be completed for each production rate in order to produce meaningful comparisons.

There are several technologies available for thickening and dewatering of mining process slurries. The most commonly used are thickeners and filters, but technological developments have made solid bowl decanter centrifuges a viable option and their use, as a modern and alternative technology, is being considered more and more. In terms of tailings, the main goal for all mine operations is to minimize operating costs and the environmental impact of the disposed material. The high potential risk of wet tailings storage in tailings dams is causing this technology to become unpopular, and there is a strong drive in many parts of the world, by governments, communities and environmental agencies to limit any further construction and use of such facilities. For the alternative disposal method of dry disposal of tailings, two aspects of the process have to be evaluated, namely the maximum dryness of the separated solids and the maximum liquid recovery. For most mining operations dry disposal is a new concept. Presenting these companies with examples of operations where this processing option has been successfully applied and proven, will help them to adapt to the changing requirements in the future. Focus has been placed on adapting decanter centrifuges to the mining environment. Modern decanters stand out in terms of their small footprint, low water demand, high availability and their high degree of automation, combined with the excellent cost / performance ratio. Decanter centrifuges have started to play a key role in applications such as tailing dewatering, drilling and tunnelling muds processing, hydrometallurgical processes of gold, nickel or zinc and separating crud in solvent extraction plants. This paper will present advantages of decanter centrifuges compared to the traditional technology and corroborate these advantages by case studies.
