X-ray diffraction (XRD) provides useful information about the composition of an ore sample in terms of quantification of crystalline phases and amorphous content. The use of new, fast detection systems implemented in CubiX FAST industrial diffractometers creates the opportunity to use this technique in exploration and modern process control. Besides the chemical composition of iron ores, their phase composition is also an important factor for exploration, quality control and processing. In the analysis of iron ore, XRD can identify the phases containing iron, such as haematite Fe2O3, magnetite Fe3O4, and goethite FeO(OH), and any other mineral phases present, especially silicas. Quantitative analysis is possible by various classical methods such as straight line or polynomial calibration with standards, but modern quantification analysis techniques such as Rietveld analysis or full pattern autoscale analysis are attractive alternatives, as they do not require any standards. These methods offer impressive accuracy and speed of analysis. Another analysis technique offering great benefit to ore exploration and process control is cluster analysis. This technique greatly simplifies the analysis of a large amount of data, eg from drill core samplings, and automatically sorts closely related scans of an experiment into separate clusters and marks the most representative scan of each cluster as well as outlying patterns. This can facilitate multi-dimensional compositional mapping of ore deposits, identifying regions of favourable mineral composition and allows fast and reliable tracking of the process. It is the most economic procedure to have automatic data evaluation without involving any dedicated personnel in the process. Details of the techniques used, sample optimisation methodologies, results, data precision and limitations will be discussed. The approaches have enormous potential as an inexpensive, reliable tool, useful in the characterisation of iron ore materials in an industrial environment.

The countercurrent gas-solid heat transfer during the drying of brown coal briquettes in the pilot carbonization plant at Morwell has been analysed and theoretical gas and solid temperature distributions through the drier have been calculated. Although the calculations rest on several simplifying assumptions, the theoretical temperature distributions compare well with those observed in practical operation. Valuable conclusions are reached as to the effects of changes in drier operating conditions on the rate of drying of the briquettes which controls the strength of the char produced. The analysis shows why a limitation was reached in the improvement of char strength in the pilot plant in 1961 due to the performance of the drier and a prediction is made of a way in which the limitation could be overcome.

The question of effective energy utilisation in grinding mills is not new. There are several conflicting arguments about tumbling mills, whether the efficiency is around 1 per cent or maybe 10 per cent, or even much lower. The energy not used is assumed to be lost as heating of the pulp, the grinding mill body, the charge, generation of shock waves and vibrations, etc. Stirred media mills on the other hand are generally considered to have better energy utilisation, but their energy efficiency is still not that clear. To shed some light on this a pilot-scale, wet stirred media mill was investigated over a range of operating conditions. The wet stirred media mill is a Drais PMH 5 TEX pearl mill fitted with an electric motor at 11 kW. It has been investigated over a range of operating conditions to try to balance the dissemination of the input energy in forms of the net grinding energy, mechanical energy losses, and the heating transferred to the pulp, the mill, the charge, and the cooling water. It is found that approximately 20–40 per cent of the input energy accounts for the grinding process. Also, that the difference between gross and net input electrical energy is mainly disseminated as heating of the pulp and cooling water. Mechanical energy losses appear to be much smaller than the heating effects. The use of a dispersant seems to mainly influence the heating effect.

Historically the insurance industryÆs involvement in any project has been relatively late in the process. Often it was a case of the last item to be ticked off the checklist has been to ensure that the insurance is in place. However, in more recent times insurers have imposed more restrictions on the cover they are prepared to provide, which has in some cases necessitated a change in the contracting structure to accommodate the insurance policy(ies). In addition, changing contractual practices have changed the allocation of risk between the various parties involved. This calls for a more proactive approach to the design and implementation of an insurance program for both the construction and operational phases of any resource project. This paper explores how a risk managed approach to the design and implementation of an insurance program for a resource project can align itself with current management approaches to project development. From the authorsÆ experience, this approach is best adopted early on in the project (often in conjunction with the bankable feasibility study) and follows AZ/NZS4360 to objectively examine and compare a wide range of risk exposures of the project in a time-effective manner across the following areas: personnel; environment; general management; compliance û legislation, systems, protocols; asset management; change management; financial impacts to the organisation; products/services; service delivery; and technology. Having identified and then analysed the risk exposures according to common consequence and likelihood ratings the next step is to develop a risk map of all considered exposures. The true value of this approach lies in the development and implementation of a risk treatment plan for identified exposures where the exposure is unacceptable. The plans will lead to the optimal solution to the appropriate risk prevention, risk mitigation and risk transfer options available. This paper also examines other benefits to the project that may arise from adopting a risk managed approach in addition to the ability to design an insurance program which recognises the exposures and the ability of the organisation (and other project parties) to retain risk.

The distribution of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits through time is episodic, involving relatively short time intervals of apparent high productivity and long intervals of low productivity. This distribution is principally related to the geodynamic evolution of the Earth. The vast majority of these deposits is associated with the assembly of supercontinents and form along convergent margins, generally in back-arc basins or rifted arcs. This contrasts with the distribution of black smoker deposits, which presently form along both convergent margins, particularly in the western Pacific, and divergent margins at mid-ocean ridges. However, the latter environment is rarely preserved deep into the geological past.There also appear to be systematic patterns in a number of other features of volcanic-hosted massive deposits through time. Deposits hosted by mafic-dominated successions are dominant in Archean to Proterozoic rocks, whereas deposits hosted by felsic-dominated successions are most common in Phanerozoic rocks. Geochemical characteristics of felsic rocks within the host successions and ore lead and sulfur isotope data of the ores have also changed with time. This suggests changes in the process of subduction and/or changes in the characteristics of the over-riding plate with time, consistent with isotopic and geologic evidence for greater reworking of pre-existing crust during the Phanerozoic.Other secular changes that are reflected in characteristics of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits include the redox state and salinity of coeval oceans. Copper-Cobalt hydrometallurgy has seen a resurgence in recent years with the development of projects in Zambia and the DRC. Many of the flow sheets are unique in their use of hydrometallurgical techniques to improve performance compared to the older types in current use. The emphasis has moved from direct copper electrowinning/stripping, with multiple stages of precipitation for removal of impurities and concentration of cobalt, to innovative use of solvent extraction and ion exchange with higher cobalt recoveries to final product. The poor quality direct electro-won copper has been supplanted with solvent extraction-electrowinning; with consequent production of LME 'A' quality metal. Many of the precipitation steps in cobalt recovery and concentration, have been replaced with solvent extraction; while the remaining precipitation stages have been enhanced with use of oxidants to improve impurity removal. Operating experience from two of these circuits has shown the benefits of the new technologies and the improved overall recovery of both copper and cobalt into higher quality products.

Development of Grindability Tests Based on Direct Measurement of Energy Nowadays, for the characterisation of the grindability different grindability indices - Bond-work index (Wi), Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) or Zeisel specific grindability (Wt) - are used. Generally, the grindability tests are carried out under relatively simplified circumstances, in a special dry batch mill with defined feed size material until prescribed conditions are reached at room temperature. However, in the fine- and ultra fine grinding, which is a frequent task (fly ash, tailings, alumina, etc), a fine material (<50 - 200 ¦m) is usually ground down to the few micrometers. The conventional grindability testing methods and apparatuses (Bond-, Hardgrove-, Zeisel-processes) for their determination, although, are not suitable directly to measure the grindability of such fine materials, since the maximal particle size of the feed material (0.5 - 3 mm) to be tested is much higher. One of the important goals of the research carried out in our Institute was to develop the novel grindability testing methods, which are suitable for the fine and ultra fine grinding, and additionally provide the possibility for the fast determination of the grindability. In order to realise the above aim the conventional Bond- and Hardgrove- mills were modified in order to directly measure the grinding work. In particular, the Hardgrove-mill was equipped with a simple torque-meter (load cell). The Bond-mill was rigged with a digital electric power measurer. The systematic experiments were carried out parallel in both mills using the conventional and the developed methods. Finally the results of both were compared. The measuring results have proved that the Bond-work index can be determined based on the developed methods. The new grindability testing methods were applied successfully in several industrial research tasks for the determination of the specific grinding energy and the Bond-work index. These methods can be also used in the industrial practice for the control of the grinding process.

Newstan Mine commenced mining operations in 1887 and has since undertaken extensive mining within the Young Wallsend, Great Northern, Fassifern, Borehole and West Borehole coal seams using a range of mining methods including board and pillar mining and longwall mining.Newstan Mine is planning to extend the existing mine workings using longwall and miniwall mining methods to produce up to 4.5 Mt/a of run-of-mine (ROM) coal for at least 25 years. The planned extension in the Main East and South West sections will involve developing new longwall panels and related mains headings. The new area contains higher specific gas emissions (SGE) than previously experienced at Newstan Mine. To achieve the optimum ventilation requirements for the longwall operation in this new area, a new ventilation shaft was designed to be constructed using the blind boring method in the South West Headings section.This paper presents the shaft design parameters and selection criteria for the construction of the new ventilation shaft, including the construction phase and the holing process to connect the shaft to the underground workings. Application of the Anaconda Simplified Work Index for Multiple Test Sizes Vale uses Bond Work Index measurements extensively in a number of applications. The Bond Work Index is usually a good parameter for checking scale up procedures when sizing ball mills, as well as the basis for variability analysis whenever drill core data is available. It is typical to measure between 100 and 150 Bond Work Indexes, depending on the deposit characteristics. The Bond procedure is relatively complex and time costly. It also requires relatively large amounts of sample, which are very expensive to be obtained. The benefits of the Anaconda simplified procedure are: considerably smaller sample requirements and laboratory time. This makes it very much attractive at Vale's development centre, including geometallurgical mapping, operation efficiency control, mine to mill, etc. The Anaconda simplified procedure was implemented and evaluated at Vale's Development Centre using a number of ores and several samples of each ore totalling more than 190 measurements. The Anaconda simplified method was calibrated for several test sieves and a correlation for any test size was determined for Vale's test mill. The calibration was also extended for two sample top sizes. The relative error of the simplified procedure was found to be in the range of nine per cent which is within the expected error Bond standard procedure. The implementation of the Anaconda method at Vale's development center has been used with great success over the past years in several green field, brown field projects and operating plants.

The Southwest Pacific is a region of active volcanism and geothermal systems. Only in New Zealand have the geothermal systems been exploited for electricity generation and industrial processing. At present, approximately 280 MWe of geothermal electricity is generated in New Zealand. A considerable amount of further exploration work is required before the total geothermal potential of the region can be assessed and before the significance of these resources can be judged against other local energy sources.

Newcrest Mining Limited (NML) owns and manages the Ridgeway Gold Mine (RGM) located outside Orange in the state of New South Wales. RGM is a new underground sublevel caving (SLC) operation that is ramping up production to 4 Mtpa. The success of the SLC method at RGM is strongly influenced by production drill and blast practices. Distinguishing features of the Ridgeway SLC operation include choke blasting against broken rock, drawpoint brow preservation, loading of blastholes with different in-hole bulk emulsion densities, precharging of production rings and routine drawpoint fragmentation assessment. These areas are described in the context of RGMÆs required blasting objectives, production drilling and charging activities and innovative practices.

This paper is based on a case study from a mine site that operates two gyratory primary crushers. These crushers were encountering problems, which included inconsistent P80, reduced liner life tonnage and, on some occasions, catastrophic failure of the liners.As part of an evaluation process, both crushers were ‘mapped’ using a technology for condition monitoring and modelling of the crusher’s wear components. The technology provides comprehensive coverage of the crusher’s concaves and mantle at 100 mm intervals. It also automatically assesses wear rate between inspections and determines the highest wear areas. Outcomes include projected optimum reline dates at target replacement thicknesses, the identification of asymmetrical wear patterns, and the accurate measurement of open and closed (OSS/CSS) side settings.A comprehensive study was performed to optimise the performance of both these crushers at site. Over a period of seven liner service lives, the strategies to improved performance included liner analysis (concaves and mantle profile analysis), tonnes per day (t/d) and tonnes per hour (t/h) analysis, mantle reutilisation, detection and control of loose concaves, and detection and control of uneven wear and hot spots.These strategies resulted in the improved mechanical and operational performance of both crushers through concave and mantle redesign, OSS/CSS control, accurate wear forecasting plus other initiatives.As a result of these initiatives, the site now experiences benefits which include consistent product size, increased tonnes per hour (t/h) for both crushers and the liner life tonnage has doubled. Net present value (NPV) has been the main criterion in mining project evaluation and production plan optimisation. It is a common practice in NPV calculations to take into account only the tangible cost items in the corporate accounting system. The costs incurred due to damage to the local ecosystem and environment are left out and treated as externalities. Such practice on the one hand underestimates the total cost of a mining operation and, on the other hand, ignores the difference in ecological/environmental impacts between different mine plan alternatives. This paper attempts to measure the ecological costs of mining and to incorporate such costs into the evaluation scheme in mining project evaluation and mine planning. The ecological costs of mining are estimated based on the areas and types of land (eg forest land, grazing land, crop land) damaged by mining activities and the carbon emission from fossil fuel consumption. For the land areas (and their associated ecosystems) directly damaged by mining activities, the ecological costs are measured by the prevention and restoration costs, the lost values of eco-services of the damaged land, including bio-product production, soil erosion control, water run-off control, oxygen release, air pollutant absorption and formation of soil nutrients. The ecological cost of carbon emission from the energy consumption of a mining operation is measured by the cost of cultivating the equivalent forest land required to uptake the emitted carbon. A case study on a large-scale open pit mining project is presented to demonstrate the influence of ecological costs on the mine planning outcome.

In terms of tunnelling the mining industry is generally thought of as the crude cousin of the civil construction industry. Mining has tended to concentrate on speed and flexibility rather than the high standards required in civil tunnelling. Historically this difference has been based on the belief that such high standards were not required by the mining industry, they would slow down the development of the project and as a result increase the costs and extend the time period between start up and a positive cashflow.For civil works the construction of a tunnel is the project, for mining the construction of declines, crosscuts and drives are merely the means of accessing the orebody so that the real work can begin û MINING. Extraction of ore is the core business of most mining companies û it is what pays the bills.Though most mining companies have the equipment, the people, the knowledge and the ability to excavate tunnels, in the past mining companies did not appear to put the same energy into their tunnelling operations as they put into improving their ore extraction operations. In the past decade this appears to have changed, many mining companies now realise how important the correct excavation of a decline is to the success of the overall mining operation. They began to recognise that there were cost benefits to be gained in using the correct development techniques without overly sacrificing the benefits of speed and flexibility.This recognition also coincided with the growth of underground contractors whose predominant work was primary development (declines and ore access crosscuts and drives). The contractors again had the same knowledge, the same people, and similar equipment but their focus was different from that of the mining company û the contractors were focused on the development of the mine, the excavation of declines, crosscuts and drives. These deliverables were the contractorsÆ core business û itÆs what paid the bills.

Sinter has been used as part of the metallic charge in large-scale blast furnaces for many years with the well-known benefits in terms of productivity and fuel consumption. However, because of the high investment in a conventional sinter plant, small blast furnaces and the associated integrated mini steel plants have not taken the advantages of using sinter. Recently KTS Korf Tecnologia Siderurgica, a division of Mannesmann Demag Ltda in Brazil, has developed a mini sinter plant for which the investment is compatible with small blast furnaces. Consequently, it is of great interest to evaluate the economical impact of using sinter in such small-scale integrated steel plants. In order to compare two alternatives, ie 100 per cent ore and 70 per cent sinter in the blast furnace burden, mass and heat balances for the entire operation from sinter plant through the blast furnace and EOF-based melting shop, were performed to evaluate the final production cost of the liquid steel. It was found that, depending on the sinter feed price, substantial savings can be obtained with the use of sinter.

It cannot be said that accurate and reliable ore reserve estimation is the fundamental of any mining operation success. Estimation techniques which are used to estimate the grade distribution of an orebody together with the assessment of uncertainty and risk have a vital influence on the success of any optimisation algorithm. Traditional estimation techniques such as kriging or inverse distance weighting are frequently used for assigning grade values to blocks. Various attempts have been made in order to compare geostatistical estimated methods for ore reserve estimation. This paper aims to evaluate the sensitivity of different estimation methods over changing the block dimension. For this reason, several block models with different dimensions were derived in Chador Malu iron ore mine which is located in 180 km northeast of Yazd in the centre of Iran. Each block model was estimated by different estimation methods such as nearest neighbours (NN), inverse distance (ID) and ordinary kriging (OK). The results of each estimation methods were compared against a control block file created by using the assay results of all blastholes drilled in the ore over four benches of the pit. The results signify that by estimating the large block size, no significant improvement occurred due to the employment of different estimation techniques. Furthermore, the grades estimated based on ID method is more reliable, but OK methods estimated more accurate tonnage.

In mining and remote areas of resource industry, there has been a development towards lacking emergency medical first aid response, that creates a potential disadvantage for patients after work accidents and other medical emergencies compared to standard population. This raises the question how a professional emergency medical coverage can be provided underground, taking into account lacking medical professionals in small resource companies combined with long rescue times. Aiming on the closure of this gap, a team of the mine rescue brigade from the Research and Training Mine Reiche Zeche (Forschungs-und Lehrbergwerk (FLB) Reiche Zeche) of the TUBAF Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg in Freiberg/Germany and its cooperating emergency departments of the Freiberg District Hospital and the Zeisigwaldkliniken Bethanien Chemnitz developed a totally new rescue concept using elements from tactical medicine and advanced emergency medicine combined with a specifically designed compact equipment and a highly standardised teaching curriculum. A fully new standardised and condensed tactical medical approach was developed including specifically adjusted equipment, and was taught in a didactically optimised way within 16 lessons in two days. Objective Structured Practical Examinations (OSPE) using manikins and simulated patients were conducted and compared to the identical exam of the reference group, which consisted of advanced paramedics. The standardised tactical medical scheme includes vital functions and body checks, advanced life support, nasal and intraosseous drug application, supraglottic airway management, artificial ventilation, thoracocentesis, bleeding control including tourniquet, fracture repositioning and splinting, transport bedding and thermal preservation. The developed Tactical Medical Mining Rescue (TMR) concept was subsequently included in the German guidelines for mine rescue services in 2022 and is already implemented in many companies in Germany and several international projects.

Codelco’s Salvador Project has been operating a block/panel caving mine for more than 50 years. This underground mining method dynamically mixes the ore and dilution. As a result, forecasting grades is difficult and achieving 100 per cent extraction of the reserves is practically impossible. A substantial volume of the ore mixed with dilution becomes remnant ore and remains to be subsequently extracted.A potential open pit mine is under evaluation at Codelco’s Salvador Project, which includes the extraction of remnant ore post-block caving extraction. An effective methodology has been implemented to estimate what is left behind once the underground mine has closed. A new mixing method using the Cellular Automata (Alfaro and Saavedra, 2004) approach has been used to allow estimation of the remnant ore with a sufficient level of confidence to be included as part of the open pit reserve.A remnant block model is created using elements such as in situ block model, drawpoint layouts, historical production records and the drawpoint extraction. Using this information, simulations of the extraction of the mine by month from 1959 to 2019 were completed, using different mixing scenarios and trying to replicate the tonnage and grade extracted.Finally, the remnant block model is categorised using a score card with four inputs to assess the risk of the estimation of this material into a category class (measured, indicated and inferred).CITATION:Villa, D and Farías, F, 2016. Variographic analysis, a classical tool from the Theory of Sampling (TOS), can address practical situations with multiple variables; however, its application has very often been limited to one variable at a time. Recent developments have shown the benefits of using multivariate approaches for variographic characterisation of a set of variables instead of considering individual variables sequentially. Among these approaches, the multivariogram has been revealed itself to be a powerful tool when the overall time-variability of a process must be summarised in terms of a large set of properties (variables) to assess its true global variability. However, even when choosing the properties of interest carefully, the resulting global variance obtained with this approach may be very high. In particular, some variables that contribute to a major proportion of the global (multivariate) variability could be less important for the process performance than others having a lower variability. To address this issue, a new approach is proposed, combining the multivariogram with process modelling and multivariate data analysis methods such as partial least squares (PLS) regression from chemometrics. An example from the mineral processing industry is presented, for which the process performance could be linked to key process variables (sensor data) using the PLS regression. Once introduced in the multivariogram equation, PLS model parameters (loading-weights or regression coefficients) can be used to weigh the variables according to their relevance for the process. In addition, this also permits characterisation of process performance variability with time using only the process input variables and a weighted metric according to the PLS regression model. Ultimately, this method helps to find an optimised sampling procedure in terms of frequency, sampling mode and number of increments according to the actual overall process performance. Mining companies are not ill-informed on the topic of community health. There have been a number of research studies that have illuminated community health issues associated with mining, especially in the western Canadian province of British Columbia. However, what is missing amongst the literature is the perspective of mine managers and mining executives on this topic. This is important as mine managers and executives face a number of issues related to community health and are under pressure to consider the topic in more detail. This paper presents results from an exploratory qualitative investigation based on grounded theory research techniques into current community health considerations from the perspectives of mine executives and mine managers working in Western Canada. Interviews were conducted between February and May 2012 with 11 mining versus ten mining executives and managers who represented operating mines or mining umbrella organisations in Western Canada. Participants report on general community health issues that are perceived to be important, the perceived role that the mining sector should play?in contributing to community health and how this differs in Western Canada as compared to locations abroad, and?risks companyÆs face in making community health contributions. This paper concludes by drawing attention to pressing health needs that are present in Northern, rural and Aboriginal populations in Western Canada and provides a platform for future research initiatives focused on improving the health and well-being of communities associated with the mining industry.
