The Grande Côte Mineral Sands Deposit (GCMSP) is located on a coastal mobile dune system in Senegal on the west coast of Africa. Senegal is a stable, democratic republic, having gained its independence from France in 1960. It has a population of about 12.5 million people. The dunes begin about 25 km north-east of Dakar, the capital city of Senegal, and extend northwards for more than 140 km. The mineralised dune system averages about 2 km wide with some areas extending to up to 4.5 km wide.Mineral Deposits limited (MDL), a Melbourne-based company with over 60 years operational experience in mineral sand mining in Australia, holds, through its Senegalese subsidiary MDL Senegal SARL (MDLS), a 25-year Mining Concession covering the deposits. The main heavy mineral (HM) areas identified to date are, from south to north, Mboro, Fass Boye, Diogo and Lompoul. Within the Mining Concession there is potential to identify additional resources beyond the limits of present drilling. The dunes are mobile or semi fixed, pale yellow in colour and overlie older white marine sands. The dunes range between 5 m and 30 m in height and the mineralised zones, which are essentially flat-lying, average around 15 m in thickness. The mineralisation consists, principally of ilmenite with accessory zircon, rutile and leucoxene. Zircon and ilmenite are the main commodities of interest.Independent consultants AMC estimated mineral resources for the four main deposits in 2006 of 1330 Mt of sand averaging 2.0 per cent HM at a cut-off grade of 1.5 per cent HM. At a cut-off grade of one per cent the resources were 3200 Mt averaging 1.5 per cent HM. All of the estimate was classified as Inferred Resources under the 2004 Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (JORC, 2004).Subsequent completion of infill drilling, sampling and assaying of the initial mining area, centred at Diogo, was completed in 2008, enabling a final dredge path to be designed and ore reserves estimated, based on a JORC compliant Measured and Indicated Mineral Resource. Infill drilling is continuing in the Lompoul and the results of this campaign will be included in the JORC compliant data base by AMC in April 2010 to enable the 15 per cent year dredge path and mine plan to be finalised.Development studies have shown that the project can be optimised as a dredging operation, with mineralised sand being treated in a conventional floating spiral preconcentrator, wet concentrator and dry mineral separation plant. Engineering work now substantially completed by Ausenco Limited (Ausenco) has developed the combination of some existing plant from MDL’s past operations, and new plant for the complete process from dredging to final product separation and grading. Testwork on a series of bulk samples has determined that the project can yield a high quality zircon product and an ilmenite product along with minor rutile and leucoxene.Work to date indicates a likely output of around 80 000 t of zircon in various quality streams (Primary, Secondary, Standard and Foundry Grades), around 550 000 t of ilmenite plus around 15000 t of rutile and around 12 000 t of leucoxene/secondary ilmenite. Planned zircon output would represent around 7per cent of the total world production, which would make the GCZ&IP a significant producer on a world scale.The studies have indicated capital costs to be in the range of US$400 M total operating cost (after completion of ramp-up) of around US$50 M - $55 M/a. Revenue is expected to be in the range $127 M - $157 M/a.

Despite flash smelting's widespread use little is known about the actual processes taking place in flash furnace shafts and comparatively few reports of sampling campaigns have appeared in the published literature. his paper reviews the previous reports of the use of horizontal trough samplers and analyses their expected collection efficiency. In the light of the deficiencies revealed by this analysis an isokinetic sampler was produced and a vertical sampling technique was also developed to obtain samples from directly below the burners in the shaft of the flash furnace at the Kalgoorlie nickel smelter. Comparison of the sizing of the samples obtained with the horizontal trough and isokinetic samplers confirmed the theoretical analyses and showed that the trough samplers were not collecting the fine particles. Besides providing data to validate mathematical models of the burners and shaft, chemical analyses of the shaft samples showed that the coal in the charge was reacting preferentially and that the plume of at least one of the burners was being deflected from its axial position. In the region directly below the burner there was evidence that the disperser on the burner was imparting more momentum to the coarser particles and that these were concentrating in the outer regions of the particle plumes issuing from the burners.

"Morro do Ouro Mine is a high tonnage/low-grade mine located in Paracatu, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The mines move around 55 Mt of ore per year at an average grade of 0.4 g/t. The auriferous mineralisation of Morro do Ouro is related to hydrothermal fluids rich in arsenic (As), gold (Au), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn). These percolated along favourable structures contained within phyllites of Upper Proterozoic age and defined a mineralised megaboudin which outcropped with 4 km extension and up to 2 km in width. The litologies in the interior of this structure are typically more deformed, sericitised and sulfidised, and exhibit the development of quartz boudins in the centre of the more deformed zones where are found the higher Au grades and the coarser sulfide crystals. Gold is preferentially associated with arsenopyrite, mainly occurring in fractures or aggregations of crystals and is rarely in solid solution or refractory. Over 90 per cent of the gold contained in the sulfide ore is free or extractable by cyanidisation. The current mineral reserve is 17.9 Mt at 0.403 g/t published at the end of 2012.In order to get a good grade estimation that represents the orebody more accurately a solids methodology was used to distinguish the different orebodies. Before 2011 the orebodies were worked with two domains relating to the weathered mantle. The B1 ore, which is oxidised, is located at the top of mineralisation, and is used to feed Plant 1. Underneath B2 ore, which is fresh sulfide bearing, represents over 30 years of production in Plant 2.In order to improve the predictability of gold grade estimation in geological modelling and to get a better predicting behaviour of each domain on the deposit, studies were carried out in which it was possible to show a correlation between elements and the mineralisation. One strong correlation and spatial distribution between Au and As, As and sulfur (S), Au and Pb, Au and Zn were found.Based on geochemistry, mineral correlations, amount of sulfide, structural deformation, texture of sulfides and the daily experience of the mine, it was possible to create solids that individualised bodies with similar mineralogical and chemical characteristics using the parameters listed above.After 2011, a new modelling concept was proposed and built with 11 different domains, compared with the previous, and with two more parameters: recovery acid neutralised capacity (ANC).Each of these bodies have different behaviours in mineral processing, like flotation and metallurgy. For example, bodies with pyrrhotite bring problems in the flotation, bodies with high arsenic do not recover well, bodies with high As with coarse texture have good recovery, bodies with fine texture do not have good adherence in production.In the present state of knowledge, protocols are being developed for bench testing to predict the recovery of each geochemical domain aiming to include these in the geological model for the parameter recovery. The Floatability Characterisation Test Rig (FCTR) is a self-contained, highly instrumented, mobile pilot plant that is able to treat up to 2 tph solids. It consists of a bank of six 130 L WEMCO« SmartCells« and a bank of six 50 L WEMCO« SmartCells«. It was developed as part of the AMIRA P9 Project, primarily to determine ore floatability characteristics and to develop and validate flotation plant modelling, scale-up and simulation methodologies. However, it may also be used to carry out pilot-scale flotation test work. This paper briefly describes the circuit modelling, simulation and scale-up test work performed using the FCTR and the use of the FCTR in pilot-plant test work performed by the metallurgical staff at WMCÆs Kambalda Nickel Operations and Mount Keith Nickel Operation. At both Kambalda and Mount Keith the FCTR was found to be very flexible and straightforward to run, with an easily changeable circuit configuration and stable operation. Testwork was facilitated through having full stream sampling on all streams, and a high degree of instrumentation providing accurate measurement of process variables. The results obtained from the FCTR testwork were highly repeatable. As a consequence of using the FCTR, WMCÆs Kambalda Operation and Mt Keith Operation were able to complete a rigorous programme of pilot plant testwork more quickly than in the past, and with a high degree of confidence in the results.

A metalliferous mine has operated at Storys Creek from the 1890s to 1979. Storys Creek drains from a pristine catchment and National Park and remains as the most degraded stream from historic mining in north-eastern Tasmania. It has been the subject of public concern since the closure, particularly at times of high rainfall such as existed in 1985 and 1986. The mine is located on the banks of the creek, which flows into a major river, the South Esk River, which is one of TasmaniaÆs largest rivers and important for recreational fishing and water supplies. For much of the life of the of the operations tailings were directly discharged into the creek, and in latter years stockpiled or very close to it. Little rehabilitation was carried out at mine closure. The result was erosion and subsequent deposition on the banks of the creek downstream. Direct emissions of adit water and the consequential emission of contaminated ground water to the creek continue to affect water quality. Contaminant loads discharging from the mine and tailings comprise 70% of the metal load in the catchment and are by far the largest single source. Acidity data suggested that the introduction of systems to introduce alkalinity could be effective in ameliorating the residual acid drainage impacts in the Storys Creek catchment. After a period of investigations and trials which proved their effectiveness, treatments adopted have included the following: relocation of tailings to a constructed and clay capped disposal area and rehabilitation of tailings area; crushed limestone addition to stream flows; crushed limestone addition to creek banks and exposed tailings; sealing of a drainage Adit; and construction of an anoxic drain to generate alkalinity to surface waters draining to old mine workings. These innovative treatments have resulted in a marked improvement in water quality draining from the area. The anoxic drain is believed to be one of the few, if any, which has been constructed to have generated high levels of alkalinity from clean waters and offers a solution to the clogging problems experienced in such drains in the past. Similarly, the use of crushed limestone in an active stream has proved effective in buffering acid drainage and removing metals from solution.

For Australian mining projects, sustainable groundwater use is typically defined as a groundwater extraction regime, measured over a specified planning time frame, which allows acceptable levels of stress and protects dependent economic, social and environmental values (DEH, 2004). This principle is compatible with most stakeholdersÆ understanding of our national environmental objectives, yet the application of this policy on a project-specific scale is not always straightforward. Three examples of sustainability issues in the management of groundwater in mining are presented. These examples highlight each of the three dependent values: environmental, economic and social.

Knowing that I was required to make four appearances, and not wanting to be too repetitious, I wrote a rather long speech of which I will deliver various sections at different places, with a common introduction. Specific areas I have addressed are "Exploration", "New sources of minerals and energy", and "Mining and metallurgy of the future".

The D47 and D39 Mechanical Dynamic Extra bolts (D47 MDX and D39 MDX) have been developed in response to the ever-increasing demand from the mining industry for rock bolts with high dynamic capacity. To prove such capacity, Sandvik has performed numerous in situ dynamic testing with the unique Dynamic Test Rig (DTR) (Darlington, Rataj and Roach, 2019; Roach, Rataj and Darlington, 2019). To complement the collection of testing data, Sandvik, in collaboration with the Swedish Research Institute for Mining, Metallurgy and Materials (Swerim) have performed additional experiments in laboratory condition using Swerim’s new drop test rig. This rig utilises a momentum transfer method to apply a dynamic load to the bolt. The sample falls together with the mass until the support beam impacts stationary dampers and the momentum energy is transferred to the bolt. Part of the charged energy is released by the dumpers while the remaining portion is absorbed by plastic deformation and/or displacement of the ground support element. The D47 and D39 MDX bolts have been tested at Swerim’s test facility with different levels of input energy. Six tests were performed at the specification energy of 36 kJ and six tests were carried out with the maximum allowable energy from the facility, ie 44 kJ. The bolts confirmed their dynamic performance absorbing the input energy without failure. The D47 MDX bolt absorbed up to 33 kJ with 150 mm displacement while the D39 MDX bolt absorbed up to 35 kJ with 162 mm displacement. This work will present an overview of the drop test rig at Swerim’s facility and a collection of results of the test performed on the D47 and D39 MDX bolts. The test method and results will be analysed and compared to the tests carried out with the in situ DTR.

Ore samples generally require preparation before analysis. Serious problems can occur with contamination degradation and particle size effects. Both grinding element contammation and sample cross contamination havebeen bound to be related to sample hardness and operator technique. For best results with minerals relevant to the steel industry, the use of Siebtechnik-type mills required a combination of careful planning, short grinding periods and intermediate sieving of the sample. The results may be extended to most mineral, rock, and refractory sample preparabons.

Closure options under consideration at some sites include backfilling mined-out pits with waste rock. Backfill may include mineralised and non-mineralised waste rock. Following groundwater rebound, flow-through conditions may develop in the pit post-closure. The backfill located in the saturated zone below the water table may release solutes under such conditions. It is therefore important to understand the potential impacts that backfilled pits could have on postclosure groundwater quality.Geochemical characterisation programs are the foundation for assessing the potential chemistry of water that has contacted mined wastes. Such programs must be designed to obtain data relevant to the closure options under consideration. To complement standard testing techniques, SRK utilises saturated column testing designed to generate data on leaching rates under anoxic conditions that could be encountered within submerged backfill.This paper presents the findings of saturated column test work carried out on waste rock samples from an iron ore mine in the Pilbara.CITATION:Watson, A, Linklater, C and Chapman, J, 2016. Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you, on behalf of the Council and Administration, to this University and extend to you our very best wishes for a most successful and stimulating symposium. We as a College of the University of N.S.W. were always proud of the excellent support we received from your Institute members and the close association that existed between our organisations. Now we have matured into the University of Wollongong and have to stand on our own feet, we will need all the support we can get from such bodies as yours to ensure that we are not only producing graduates but are also playing a vital role in the community. Although there is no planning for a school of Mining Engineering in the near future, we do look forward to this being a viable proposition eventually and we will then be able to offer to your Institute wider facilities for your activities and ones which will embrace both the Mining and Metallurgy phases. Thank you Mr. President.

The use of electrical or electronic safety systems to protect personnel, and the engineering tasks associated with the design, manufacture and maintenance of these systems are referred to using the term ‘functional safety’. In the past ten years, the use of such systems has transitioned from its traditional base, in oil and gas major hazard facilities, to being a part of most large mining and materials handling projects. In particular, functional safety is rapidly becoming a significant component of Australian iron ore projects, typically in the form of emergency stops, remote isolation, drive through interlock, robot cell entry or mobile machine anti-collision systems. While these types of systems have been in use in iron ore for a long time, functional safety standards (eg AS61508, AS62061, AS4024.1503) require more rigourous demonstration of the level of risk reduction provided by the systems.The early engineering project development phases require a number of key decisions to be made around functional safety implementation. The decisions made at this point in a project will go on to dictate the required types of risk assessment and analysis, equipment selection, sizing of substations, and training and maintenance requirements for owners. For project teams that are unfamiliar with functional safety, or inexperienced in its application, an incorrect decision or failure to understand the requirements of the chosen standard can lead to a failure to meet contract requirements, as well as major cost and schedule overruns.This paper examines the implications of functional safety on early engineering studies, focusing on the following questions: How does a designer or company determine what standard is best suited to their project? What key aspects of functional safety design need to be considered during project development? Coal mining legislation makes frequent reference to æSafety Management SystemsÆ but there is a chronic shortage of useful guidance material as to how these might be applied to hazardous exposures. Several studies have indicated that for each death that is reported as a result of an industrial æaccidentÆ, there are five deaths that caused by occupational exposures. Because the deaths from occupational exposures do not occur on site and often well after employment has ceased, they are generally unreported. Improved access to mortality data from coroners, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare and superannuation service providers (early claims from death and total permanent disability), has given rise to some analysis of death and disability data that provides evidence that there are emerging opportunities to develop and improve safety management systems for hazardous occupational exposures. Issues explored include how safety management systems might be developed in relation to dusts and chemicals and other hazardous exposures to ensure the risk of disorders with long latency periods are reliably assessed and the exposures effectively managed. The current standards and guidelines which refer to safety management systems in general or to management of exposure related hazards are examined. Many standards are based on dose-response studies that provide for an acceptable percentage of workers to suffer adverse health outcomes. An alternative management system might be to apply dose-response relations to health surveillance to identify æat riskÆ individuals and effectively manage health and related safety risk at an early stage.

The beneficiation of iron ore deposits to yield haematite and magnetite concentrates for steel making processes typically require the use of one or a combination of wet processing techniques based on gravity, magnetic or froth flotation processes. With the need for more cost-effective technologies with a lower water demand, a re-examination of dry processing techniques has been initiated. For example, a dry processing capability may offer an advantage where suitable quality and quantity of process water hinders the development of a particular resource. This paper describes recent laboratory test work for the production of high grade concentrates using dry electrostatic techniques for -300 ¦m haematite and magnetite ores and compares them with magnetic separation techniques.

It is always difficult to sum up an open forum adequately and instantaneously, so, with the privilege of hindsight, and also with some time to reflect, I am exercising the Chairman's prerogative to put together my view of the overall conclusions. Hopefully, these may provide a focus for each Institute to formulate its own programme with respect to mineral industry education. First, in answer to the question, "Should there be Schools of Mines?", there was a very clear 'yes'. However, I reiterate what I said in the introduction to this forum, specific professional education for the mineral industry exists only because the mineral industry sees a need and wants it. If the mineral industry should decide that it does not need professionals with specific mineral industry training, then such training will cease to exist. As alluded by Dr Hackett, if such training ceases to exist, one must then question the need for Institutes of Mining and Metallurgy. Now, there's some food for thought! Specialist schools of mines (metallurgy and geology) can only exist in an environment of genuine interaction with, and support by, industry. For their part, schools of mines, used here in a generic sense, require leadership that is strong but responsive to industry needs. It is the leader that puts his stamp on a school, and, to a large extent, determines whether that school is 'good' or only 'mediocre'.

In today’s underground mass mining, the orepass is an important part of the infrastructure as it connects two or more mine levels and is used for conveying or storing large amounts of material. One of the main risks related to an orepass is when operational or structural failure occurs, leading to long-term loss of functionality. Developing or rehabilitating an orepass when major failure has occurred is a time-consuming and expensive operation, and the risk of a long-term orepass loss motivates the development of alternative transportation strategies to ensure the continuation of smooth operations in large underground systems. The study presented in this paper has been done at the Loussavaara Kiirunavaara AB Malmberget mine in Sweden, where iron ore deposits are being extracted using sublevel caving. The study analyses the transportation system in one of the mine’s orebodies using discrete event simulation, with a focus on maintaining ore transportation in the event of the loss of an orepass.CITATION:Skawina, B, Greberg, J, Jonsson, K and Salama, A, 2016. Poor selectivity in the separation of two sulphides generally arises because the flotation characteristics of the coarse sizes of the valuable mineral and finer sizes of non-valuable minerals are identical. Separat- ing the pulp into two size fractions at a specifically determined cut size and conditioning each size fraction with its own optimum reagent addi- tion is known to be helpful in improving such selectivity problems. The performance of the zinc section of the complex ore circuit at Wood- lawn Mines has been analysed in detail. The selective recovery of zinc was found to be a problem in zinc/pyrite separation. However, atypi- cally, the separation problem was between coarse zinc and coarse, not finer, pyrite. In spite of this the use of separate conditioning has effected significant improvements in rougher concentrate. Selectivity (and hence grade), overall recovery and flotation rate have all been enhanced. Dis- appointingly, coarse zinc recovery was not increased but, with careful optimization, this might be achieved without sacrificing the gains already realized. The technique of separate conditioning clearly has general application in other circuits where selectivity is a significant problem.
