The Roa Opencast Coal Mine is situated at the north-eastern end of the Greymouth Coalfield. It lies on an eastern flank of the Paparoa Range, 16 km north-east of the town of Greymouth on the West Coast of the South Island. Road access is via a sealed road from Blackball to Roa, then by a 5.3 km all weather, gravel road, which gains 340 m in elevation from 190 m RL at Roa to a maximum height of 530 m near the opencast.

Development of SAG liners has always been a strong focus and interest in mineral processing as SAG liners significantly impact on plant performance (throughput and grind size), material costs and plant downtime. SAG shell relines typically determine the frequency and duration of plant shutdowns. Early SAG shell liner designs relied heavily on practical experiences and were limited in their size due to weight restrictions. Significant developments in Discrete Element Method (DEM) modelling, material and manufacturing technologies and larger reline machines have resulted in new and improved liner designs. This paper discusses the evolution of SAG shell liner design and its progression to the Skip Row design. Case studies have been provided for the Skip Row design in a variety of applications such as Single Stage SAG (SSS), SAG and Ball (SAB), SAG and Ball with Crushing (SABC) and Pre-Crush at a variety of mill diameters ranging from 24 foot to 34 foot. A detailed assessment has also been carried out comparing liner service life, ease of reline and performance (throughput, power and grind size) for a large 34 foot SAG mill when compared to the previous design.CITATION:Toor, P, Swart, M and Ståhlbröst, H, 2017. The Plumduff sinter occurs at Whenuaroa, near Puhipuhi, approximately 30 km north of Whangarei. It is one of three residual sinters in the southern portion of a mid- to late-Pliocene geothermal system. The deposit consists of many large sinter breccia boulders, including rudrocks (coarse breccias), scattered around the flanks and summit of the small conical hill of Plumduff. Three types of sinter breccia occur: (i) rudrocks consisting of large, angular to sub-angular clasts of layered sinter up to 0.8 m across, as well as smaller clasts of sinter (20 - 100 mm dia), and fragments of stromatolitic structures; all clasts are supported in a matrix of microcrystalline, transparent to translucent to milky quartz; (ii) fragments of layered angular to irregularly mottled sinter of white to grey or bluish hue supported in a translucent to opaque silica matrix; (iii) smaller, matrix-supported breccias with clasts both partially surrounded and/or penetrated, by a clay-like weathering rind, and sinter conglomerates with rounded to oblate clasts. Three principal types of fabrics constitute the bulk of the sinter: (i) stromatolites, including columnar, palisade and filamentous networks, showing progressive silicification, in fenestral, tufted to clotted fabrics; (ii) peloids and pisoids; (iii) plant-rich facies in which various silicified plant species occur in a silica matrix. All fabrics have counterparts in hot spring deposits in the Taupo Volcanic Zone formed at temperatures from 75¦C to 35¦C. Also present is steam-condensate-produced alteration: kaolinite and alunite as well as boulders of quartz lattice texture. Cinnabar only occurs in sinter on the north and south central slopes of the hillside. No quartz veins or geyserite were recognised.

Computer simulation is a well accepted tool for modelling the behaviour of large and complex operating systems. It is a particularly useful technique in complex operations where there are multiple interactions between the inputs and outputs of various unit operations. It can be utilised during the early stages of a project as part of the business case definition phase or the early engineering phases, or alternatively to help understand the various options available in an upgrade or expansion. With the design of a new processing plant to handle a different ore type at Lihir Gold Limited (Lihir), there was concern that the existing conveying system could separately handle the increased tonnages. A simulation model was constructed which allowed Lihir to examine the impact on the conveying system of the new process plant, as well as investigate the effect of different trucking options. As is often the case, once the simulation model was built, further understanding of the downstream bottlenecks was able to be investigated, including the sizing of critical equipment.

Developments since 1959 in major excavators to meet the high outputs of overburden and coal under the changing nature of the Morwell Coal Deposits of the Latrobe Valley are described. Particular reference is made to investigations of designs of the bucket wheel head configurations for the digging of flat batters on high faces, and examples are given of the wide use ofmodelsin these studies.An explanation is given of considerations leading to selection of the Long Boom or the Compact type of bucket wheel excavator for various applications. The past decade has seen increasing manufacture in Australia of components for excavators and similar machines. The measures undertaken to integrate these components with those from overseas (Germany) are described. A section of the paper deals with advances in Electrical Engineering for large excavators in Australia and its interdependenee with mechanical design and construction. Finally, as an example of the versatility of the bucket wheel excavator a description is given of a recent application for the mining of mineral sands in Northern N.S.W.

The Grasberg is a large copper and gold open pit mine operated by PT Freeport Indonesia and located in the high equatorial mountains of Papua Province, Indonesia. The climate is alpine/sub-alpine with little seasonal variation in temperature and rainfall. The annual precipitation varies from about 3000 to 5000 mm over short distances around the Grasberg, but in general, an average daily precipitation of 10 mm per day applies and leaching of the overburden is continuous throughout the year. Mining commenced in 1988, and almost all of the overburden mined up to 2003 was potentially acid forming. The current acid drainage from this overburden is being collected and treated. From 2004 to the end of the Grasberg pit operation in 2014, approximately 70 per cent of the overburden will be potentially acid forming and 30 per cent limestone. A program of laboratory leach columns, field test pads and an instrumented full-scale dump was developed with the objective of defining scale up factors to quantify the acid and metal leaching rates and to evaluate the stockpile geochemistry and control options. The results of an ongoing seven year program have demonstrated feasible scale up between laboratory columns, field test pads and the trial dump in relation to material geochemistry and ARD evolution trends at Grasberg. The potentially acid forming waste types are highly reactive and maximum acid generation rate occurs within two to three years and that maximum copper release occurs within one to two years of exposure. The results also show that the net acid generation (NAG) test provides a good estimate for the potential acid load from overburden types. The chemistry, temperature and oxygen data from the trial dump suggest that oxidation and acid generation is occurring throughout the dump but at a decreasing mass rate with increasing distance from the toe of the dump. It is apparent that convection and/or advection are important mechanisms for the transport of oxygen into and within the dump. Key results and findings of the investigations carried out are presented and the implications of the findings for long-term ARD management at the Grasberg mine are outlined.

Recent increase in the development of underground space in urban areas in Australia has included soft ground tunnel construction. The ground movements associated with soft ground tunnel construction may present risk to other existing and proposed structures in the nearby vicinity. Much experience has been gained both in the UK and Asia in recent years in the engineering evaluation of this risk. The paper presents a procedure to assess these aspects of soft ground tunnel construction with reference to recent projects.

The Emperor Gold mine at Vatukoula, Fiji, is a nine million ounce gold telluride deposit. In January 1992, the mine was on the verge of closure when the current management team took charge. Losses had been incurred for two consecutive years and the published resource amounted to less than five years of production. Relationships with the workforce, the government and the general public were poor. Today, the mine has recorded three consecutive years of profit, has resources that will support the operation for at least 20 years and has excellent relationships with employees, government and the general public.

Arrium (previously OneSteel) initiated a desktop study into the performance of its hematite ore beneficiation plant in early 2010. The beneficiation plant utilises jig concentrators and spirals to upgrade low-grade hematite recovered during mining at the Iron Duke (ID) mine site located 60 km south-west of Whyalla. The study, conducted in conjunction with Mineral Technologies, identified a number of opportunities for improvement, which were validated by a series of sampling campaigns and a pilot plant trial. One of the major recommendations was to upgrade the ultra-fines processing circuit from a single-stage spiral circuit to a three-stage circuit. The upgrade of the ultra-fines circuit was estimated to provide a significant increase in fines production and grade.In order to capitalise on the strong iron price at the time of the project, Arrium decided to utilise a fast-tracked approach to design, construct and commission the processing equipment required to achieve the improvements identified. This decision introduced the risk of missing critical steps in the project development process, which could have potentially resulted in major issues in latter stages of the project. In addition to the challenges introduced due to the expedited time line for project completion, this project presented unique challenges due to its brownfield nature. One such challenge faced was the integration of the new equipment and control system software.Furthermore, the importance of the ID ore beneficiation plant (OBP) contribution to the companyÆs export commitments meant the upgrade work had to occur while minimising disruption to normal operation. This decision presented a set of new challenges to an already complex project. One such challenge was the need to build and commission the new spiral circuit in isolation from the operating plant.The aim of this paper will be to highlight some of the challenges faced in a complex brownfield project such as the ID OBP upgrade and discuss how they were managed to enable the successful commissioning of the process in early 2012.CITATION:Selvapandian E and Barr, R, 2013. When the human eye fails in the evaluation of quality parameters in the extraction of minerals the use of laser-induced fluorescence analysis (LIF) can supply more detailed information on the composition of rocks. On the basis of measurements of selected raw materials engineering concepts for the use of this method in the mining industry as an innovative system for horizon control of mining machines will be described and the most important analysis parameters, influencing factors and interference variables are presented.

The Pilbara region of Western Australia is well known for its abundant exports of hematite-goethite deposits, which have been mined and exported since the 1960s. Magnetite has also been mined in Australia throughout this period, although historically of much lower production volumes (WA Iron Ore profile, 2016). Magnetite offers a source supply of material >66 per cent iron grade product, which is used as premium feed (predominantly pellets) to blast furnaces or specialised steel mills.The Iron Bridge project area contains outcropping magnetite and hematite banded iron formation (BIF), which within the region was recognised as having potential to host economic mineralisation during the 1960s. Development within the project area, however, did not commence until Fortescue Metals Group acquired the tenements based on a 2004 agreement, formed a joint venture with interested groups and then initiated an assessment for magnetite (rather than hematite) mining potential. The combined deposits now have an identified large mineral resource inventory, with test work demonstrating they are able to produce a magnetite concentrate of greater than 66 per cent Fe over an extended mine life. This concentrate would be suitable for forming pellets or feed for direct reduced iron products.The deposits form a singular orebody, approximately 12 km in length by 1 km in width and extending to depths beyond 600 m. The four main deposits are geographically separate and have subtle mineralogical differences, thought driven by the degree of deformation and alteration within each area.Definition of the stratigraphy, structure and key mineralogy of the deposits has been carried out through several stages of exploration and project development. This has also included recent mining and processing of more than 1 Mt of feed material to an on-site processing facility. This demonstrated at a production scale that dry plus wet processing techniques can efficiently separate the magnetite from the gangue minerals to form a suitable (marketable) product.Geometallurgical classification of the host stratigraphy has been carried out from analysing the high volume of quantitative data available for this deposit. This has allowed definition of mappable units within the fresh BIF to be used as a driver in mine scheduling, delivering optimal feed to the processing plant.Construction of mine and processing facilities is expected to commence once all technical risks have been addressed, market conditions are deemed appropriate and approval is given by the joint venture partners.CITATION:Simpson, C, 2017. The investigation of the potential of the Webb/Baynes block of the Buller coalfield for anode carbon manufacture has generated much information on the physical beneficiation characteristics of the Buller coals in general. A further 36 drill holes of the block in question and several other samples have been analysed by sink/float analysis, either at a single density or over a range of densities. In addition, many samples have been beneficiated on a laboratory shaking table or by flotation. The ash content can be reduced by a variable factor. The reduction factor of between two and four by sink/float analysts is understandably less for tabling where separation is not perfect. All Buller coals behave similarly, there being greater ash reduction factors for higher ash coals.

As one of the four basic sciences, the study of geology is intrinsically worthy as a means of increasing fundamental knowledge of the behaviour and evolution of the universe. Geological knowledge can also be translated into practical outcomes for society such as resource discovery and protection of the environment. Australia has a long tradition of providing very high quality geoscience programs to prepare graduates for a range of occupations. We are, however, reaching a nexus in the way universities should or can deliver engaging programs. This has been triggered by the rapid evolution of the digital world (the Internet of Things), new technologies, unprecedented access to information, better understanding of the processes by which we learn and adapt our thinking, growing complexity in the problems we must face or opportunities to grasp, and university funding models. Designing education programs for the next generation of geologists extends far beyond tinkering with syllabuses. We must develop skills sets that will allow graduates to work in rapidly changing landscapes, but in doing so may have to sacrifice content to build capability in our graduates. Whereas universities must respond to changing demands on graduates by ensuring degree programs contain an appropriate balance of material and high quality of delivery, industry and government must also fulfil their responsibilities to provide additional training programs for graduates to assist their rapid transition into independent professionals. This paper examines various educational issues being considered in developing the new Decadal Plan for the Earth Sciences, and reflects on directions that education is heading in many of our universities.CITATION:Cohen, D R, 2017. At the treatment plant of the Broken Hill South Limited, Broken Hill, the zinc concentrates, with water, are pumped out to a more or less level area, and stored in dams to dry by drainage and evaporation.In-the construction of these dams a clay bank is first thrown up around the proposed dam site. The concentrate and water mixture are then run in from the perimeter, the solids being continuously shovelled up to increase the bank height, while the clear water is drained off at the centre and returned to the treatment plant.These dams vary in size up to 57,000 sq. ft. in area; when completed the banks are about 12 it. high, and the capacity for the largest dams is about 350,000 cub. ft., say, 20,000 tons.The survey office is called upon for a monthly survey of these dams, generally three of which are in process of building or refilling. The puggy nature of the material prohibits walking beyond the bank of the dam, therefore the following method of estimating concentrates was evolved. No originality is claimed, but as the need is for a true survey, and the results have shown the accuracy of the method, a description is warranted. The dam site is first laid out into 10-ft. squares with a theodoliteand 150-ft. steel tape, the outside lines being placed about 15 ft. from the clay bank - 15 ft. is the maximum convenient distance from the bank for working with the levelling staff mentioned later.As the dam is rarely rectangular in plan, the outside points pegged out are not always the corner of a square, but are placed to give the greatest convenience in later work, that is to say, there may be triangles and irregular figures. Gipronickel Institute JS that is a Research and Development Centre affiliated to the worldclass Norilsk Nickel Mining and Metallurgical Company, and Outokumpu Technologies AB (Boliden Contech AB) have jointly developed the reconstruction project of Pechenganickel metallurgical operations using a two-zone Vanyukov furnace. The international expert group appointed by the Nordic Investment Bank has examined the project. The project financing should be partly executed by the Norway government. Current annual rate of sulfur dioxide emissions is 100 000 t. The aim of the project is to reduce it to 12 000 tpy. Pechenganickel Combine is owned by MMC Norilsk Nickel. Currently it produces nickel high-grade matte from sulfide copper-nickel concentrate with up to ten per cent MgO content. The existing production is in accordance with the following flow sheet: agglomeration û electric furnace smelting with matte production û converting in horizontal converters. Annual production capacity is about 36 000 t of nickel in high-grade matte. Converter gases report to sulfuric acid production. The principal results of studies on high magnesia materials smelting in two-zone Vanyukov furnace, engineering solutions, and technical and economical parameters are offered.

This paper presents a research project referring to the stability of submerged walls of open pit mines and the actual state of development. Obviously the slope stability analysis is always a rather complex problem, because it is difficult to reduce the problem to a design scheme and to define the available in situ soil strength. Especially the design of submerged slopes represents a problem. The state-of-the-art slope stability analysis is based on a simplified modelling of slope failure and soil behaviour and with this predicted stable slope inclinations of sand slopes below water-table are less then half the angle of internal friction. Slope angles calculated like that canÆt satisfy the mining companies. One of the problems that have to be solved is the reliable determination of the long-term stability of non-cohesive, submerged slopes, which is not only dependant on geotechnical and hydrogeological parameters of the subsoil, but is also significantly influenced by how the slopes are made. The research project points at the relations between mining and geotechnical engineering with the main aim to find a more suitable stability analysis which takes both soil behaviour and mining influences into account.

Cobalt/tungsten mineralization at Mt. Cobalt, located 170 km southeast of Mt. Isa in northwestern Queensland, is described. Mineralization occurs in the Kuridala Formation of the Mary Kathleen Group, which is composed dominantly of pelitic schists, carbonates and acid and basic volcanics.Rocks in the region are metamorphosed to amphibolite facies and affected by two generations of tight to isoclinal folds and a third, more open generation of folds. The region is divided into three meridionally trending belts on the basis of structural style, with mineralization concentrated in the central, more highly strained belt.Deformation and metamorphism is probably younger than 1670 m.a., and the rocks are intruded by granitic rocks dated at 1509 ± 22 m.a.Mineralization occurs in shear zones at the contact between an amphibolite and enclosing pelitic schists, and within the amphibolite itself. Mineralization consists of cobaltite and scheelite with lesser chalcopyrite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, i1menite, allanite, xenotime and apatite. The mineralizing event involved addition of K, Cl, CO2 W, As, Cu, Ni, Au and rare earths and depletion of Ca and Na. It altered a hornblendeandesine/labradorite host assemblage to a biotiteoligoclase/andesine-scapolite assemblage. Though tourmalinealteration also occurs, it is probably not related to mineralization.It is concluded that the mineralization and alteration assemblages formed by reaction of saline fluids with amphibolite close to the peak of amphibolite facies metamorphism.The fluids are probably metamorphically derived, and their movement was channelled through high strain zones in the sequence. The material carried by the fluids was derived from the metasedimentary/metavolcanic pile as a whole.Other deposits in the Mt. Cobalt-Selwyn area have characteristics comparable with Mt. Cobalt, and the mechanism for the genesis of Mt. Cobalt may have applications at other areas in the region.

The behaviour of coal in a process is a function of both the coal properties and the processing conditions. In the case of the Loy Yang coal deposit, extensive testing has been undertaken to determine: ò the extent, distribution and structure of the coal resource; ò the variations in properties throughout the resource; and ò evaluation of the behaviour of the coal during processing. This has involved the conduct of an extensive borehole drilling program, backed by geological modelling and material characterisation (chemical, physico-chemical and petrological). Evaluation of the behaviour of the coal during processing has ranged from theoretical modelling, laboratory-scale investigations through to pilot scale and full-scale tests. Until recently, the bulk of the work was directed at evaluating the behaviour of the coal for existing pulverised fuel (pf) firing/steam boiler technology and a high level of understanding has been developed of both the coal resource and its behaviour within these systems. More recent efforts have been directed towards the evaluation of new technologies directed towards cheaper and more efficient power generation using this coal. Loy Yang coal has been evaluated in the following technologies: ò Hydrothermal dewatering/direct coal-fired gas turbine; ò Steam fluidised bed drying; ò Solar drying/densification; ò Briquetting; and ò Gasification.

The New Broken Hill Consolidated Airshaft is the first major undertaking in the development of New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd's. property, which adjoins that of The Zinc Corporation Ltd. on the latter's southern boundary.The Zinc Corporation ore-body has a southerly pitch. The Zinc Corporation's New Main Shaft is 1000 ft. north of the common boundary, and the general plan of development of the New Broken Hill Consolidated property is by driving south from this shaft on the lower levels. No downcast airway from the surface was available south of the Zinc Corporation's New Main Shaft; this shaft acts as the main downcast to the bottom of the Zinc Corporation mine, the general air flow then being northward and upward to the upcast shaft at the extreme north end of the Zinc Corporation property.Rock temperature is 920 F. at 2000 ft., increasing by 10 Fahr. each 72 ft., the rock temperature at 3000 ft. being estimated at 1060 Fahr. With the general air flow northward from the Zinc Corporation's New Main Shaft, adequate ventilation under these temperature conditions would not be practicable for any great distance south of this shaft without another main airway from the surface. Accordingly the New Broken Hill Consolidated Airshaft is being sunk at a point 1000 ft. south of the common boundary, i.e., 2000 ft. south of the Zinc Corporation's New Main Shaft, to ventilate future New Broken Hill Consolidated workings and that part of the Zinc Corporation mine between the boundary and the New Main Shaft.
