The Waihi Region is host to many low sulphidation epithermal Au-Ag deposits. The Golden Cross mine located at the head of the Waitekauri River, eight kilometres NW of Waihi, was a gold mining operation that placed significant emphasis on environmental management. An assessment of the influence of this mining project on stream sediment geochemistry (Fe, Mn, As, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, Ni, Ag and Se) in the Waitekauri Catchment has been made. Effective waste management during the mine operation appears to have prevented contamination of stream sediment. Trace metal concentrations in the Waitekauri Catchment sediment have generally decreased since 1987, and are currently mainly below the ANZECC (2000) sediment quality guidelines. However, elevated As levels were recorded in the Upper Waitekauri River and Battery Stream, exceeding guideline values. Elevated levels of Cu, Pb, Zn and Cd were found in the Huanui Stream, a tributary of the lower Waitekauri River. This reflects the influence of past mining operations in the valley, as well as natural weathering of hydrothermally altered Coromandel Group andesite. At a number of sites, Mn concentrations also exceeded sediment quality guidelines, and this may be derived from the remediated Golden Cross mine site.

This paper describes the methods of constructing timber barricades against pillars of ore in the South Mine, property of Broken Hill South Limited, Broken Hill, N.S.W., and discusses the behaviour of the various types of barricade alongside trucked sand filling and hydraulic stowed sand filling.Since the introduction of hydraulic stowing, cut and fill and overhand square letting methods have been used in mining the pillars. Such methods could not be used where the pillars had failed badly. The filling used is partially deslimed concentrating millresidue containing among other gangue minerals, calcite and a small amount of pyrrhotite and pyrite.The author is indebted to the mine superintendent of Broken Hill South Limited for permission to publish this paper.OLD METHODS OF CONSTRUCTING BARRICADES.Square Set Stopes.Before filling each stope the outer row of legs was lined inside with 10 in. x 2 in. boards spaced 2 in. apart. It was usual to tie the row of legs and caps together with timber dogs. As the space between the barricade and ground varied from nil to several feet, it was general practice to fill behind the lining boards. No provision was made to retain this sand during subsequent pillar stoping, consequently a run of sand right up the barricade could cause adilution of ore and serIOUS dIstortion of the barricade.

The resource estimation of lateritic deposits, such as Aurukun, presents specific issues related to the lateral changes in thickness and elevation of the various horizontal layers (or zones) within the deposit where the x and y dimensions are orders of magnitude greater than the z dimension. The objective was to develop a three-dimensional (3D) block model that retained the vertical and lateral variation inherent in deposits of this type to allow full optimisation of the production plan without prior selection of an economic portion (enriched bauxite layers) of the profile at the resource estimation stage. The Aurukun bauxite deposit is held by Chalco Australia Pty Ltd (Chalco) and forms part of the world-class Weipa bauxite province, Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, Australia. The bauxite is predominantly pisolitic with an upper boehmite-rich zone and lower gibbsite-rich zone. The bauxite consists of both in situ and reworked domains, is overlain by a thin soil horizon and has kaolinite clay as a transitional base. A portable infrared mineral analyser (PIMA) was utilised on site, in addition to elemental assay, on each drill sample to determine the mineralogy, in particular levels of boehmite, gibbsite, kaolinite and reactive silica. As part of the scope of work, a field program was undertaken using large diameter Boart Longyear sonic drilling to acquire detailed density measurements across the deposit to allow compliance with Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) reporting requirements. Interpretation of the stratigraphy was conducted on a hole by hole basis with definition of the zone layering based on stratigraphy, geochemistry and mineralogy. The zone boundaries were then modelled as 3D surfaces and used to constrain a block model. The block model estimation used the ordinary kriging method, with the estimation done in unfolded space and then refolded, therefore maintaining the zones irrespective of thickness or orientation. The unfolding process converts the real-world positions for both blocks and informing samples to a scaled position relative to the roof and floor of each zone. Analysis of the data and variography were also undertaken in unfolded space. The x and y dimensions are unchanged, but the z dimension is a relative position. The effect of the unfolding and limits on number of samples per hole is to æpushÆ the informing sample search sideways but within the stratification, rather than vertically. This honours the strong vertical zonation within the bauxite profile. The JORC Code requires that the stated resource must have æreasonable prospects for economic extractionÆ. This is a qualitative rather than quantitative definition. A number of selection criteria to define a resource roof and floor were developed in consultation with the project engineers and owners to meet these criteria. The vertical selection of material to include in the resource highlights the variation in the development (and destruction) of the bauxite profile from area to area within the deposit.

The epithermal gold-silver deposits wall poster is one in a series of posters on different mineral deposit types being produced by GNS Science to raise awareness of the characteristics of New Zealand mineral deposits and their prospectivity. Epithermal deposits consist of quartz veins, quartz vein stockworks and hydrothermal breccias that are mainly hosted in subaerial andesitic or rhyolitic rocks of Tertiary age. The deposits were formed at depths of typically less than 1 km and at temperatures between 180¦ and 320¦C, although ore grade mineralisation was generally deposited at less than 270¦C.   In New Zealand, epithermal deposits occur in association with late Cenozoic volcanic rocks in the Northland, Coromandel and Taupo volcanic regions. All of the past and present gold production, estimated at greater than 380 t (along with 1300 t Ag) comes from the Miocene-Pliocene Coromandel Volcanic Zone, where about 50 epithermal gold-silver deposits occur over a 200 km long belt. In Northland, silver and mercury have been produced from hot spring type epithermal deposits, and several gold-silver prospects have been identified. Ore grade gold-silver mineralisation is currently being deposited in several active geothermal fields of the Taupo Volcanic Zone, and extinct geothermal systems occur on the western side of the zone. The active systems have provided natural laboratories to help understand the processes of epithermal mineralisation.

The purpose of this paper is to outline the equipment used for diamond drilling at Mount Isa, together with alterations and recent improvements therein. As the majority of the drilling is carried out with machines running at relatively high speeds using XRN blast hole bits, the paper is mainly devoted to this branch of drilling.Because diamond bit costs constitute the major expense, a considerable amount of research into bit design has been carried out, and in several instances, costs per foot have shown an appreciable decrease in spite of rising manufacturing costs and higher diamond prices. Equipment performance has at times been erratic due to delays in delivery and occasionally because of faulty parts, but in general the position has improved by keeping in close contact with the manufacturers.BLASTHOLE DRILLING MACHINESThe standard blasthole diamond drill is the 'E-500' two cylinder air powered model manufactured by Mineral Drillers Limited. Several of the older pattern JV41 are still in use, but are being retired as they wear out.. Machines are repaired in the underground diamond drill shop.The normal feed gears used when drilling in lead shales are 350 top gear and 450 low gear-actually 357 and 438 revolutions per inch of advance respectively. The 300 gear was commonly used several years ago, but it was found that bit footages could be increased without any appreciable drop in penetration rate by reducing to the 350 gear. A practical field method for determining the maximum value of the intrinsic oxidation rate, Smax , of sulfidic materials in waste rock dumps is proposed. Knowledge of the intrinsic oxidation rate of sulfidic materials distributed in a dump is necessary for predictive modelling of oxidation and pollutant generation over time. The suggested method uses the fact that drilling waste rock dumps to install probes for monitoring temperature and oxygen concentration causes large volumes of air to be injected into a dump by the drill rig. By measuring the rate of decrease of oxygen concentration along the length of a borehole immediately after installation, it is proposed that Smax can be calculated at different depths. The aims of this work were: to derive a simple, practical formula for the estimation of Smax from the oxygen concentrations measured over time, based on some simplifying assumptions; to use a two-dimensional numerical model that incorporates all the necessary physical processes to model the behaviour of an aerated dump over time for a reasonable range of dump and material parameters; and to compare the results of the two approaches to assess the validity of the simple formula as a method for estimating Smax. It has been found that the technique can provide reliable estimates of Smax when the value is of the order of 10-7 kg(O2) m-3 s-1 or greater. At the lower end of the range however the radius of the zone aerated during drilling becomes an important parameter and further work has been recommended to investigate this aspect of the method.

The utilisation of fossil fuels, including coal (of which Australia is a large producer and exporter) is a significant contributor to the emission of greenhouse gases. Methane gas, formed during the coalification process, is present in coal seams to varying levels depending on the rank and depth of the deposit. This gas usually escapes to the atmosphere during mining operations without prior conversion to C02 or utilisation as fuel. The quantity of methane released can represent from less than one percent to more than five percent of the carbon content of the coal mined. Per unit of carbon, methane has a greenhouse impact many times that of C02. The emission of uncombusted methane to the atmosphere can therefore represent a greenhouse impact of similar porportions to that of the CO2 formed by combusting the mined coal. However, greenhouse emissions from coal can be minimised by collecting the coal seam methane and converting it to water vapour and the less damaging form, CO2. If such conversion is carried out while performing useful work, the methane can further reduce greenhouse emissions by displacing other fossil fuels. Technology has been developed to allow coal seam methane gas to be economically collected in a pure form, uncontaminated with air. This pure methane can be used to supplement natural gas supplies, to generate power or for the production of chemicals or substitute transport fuels. By collecting and utilising coal seam methane, the greenhouse impact from the mining and use of coal can be minimised, with significant reductions possible in the case of gassy deposits.

Morton, the most important of which were on the Black King, Good Friday, St. Patrick and the Great Northern Gully Shaft.GENERAL GEOLOGYJensen maps the Herberton area as part of a granite massif intruding rocks of two ages, the Younger Metamorphics of Silurian-Devonian age, and the Older Metamorphics of Older Palaeozoic age. The distinction is apparently based on lithological data. The Older Metamorphic rocks occur as inliers in the granite massif to the west and east of Herberton (Fig. 1).The area described consists of granite traversed by numerous dykes. West of the area, approaching the Older Metamorphic rocks, the granite becomes finer grained as if chilled towards its contact, and the dykes more numerous. To the east, passing from the Nova Scotia mine to Mount Lavery there are numerous dyke rocks, but the outcrops are poor and knowledge of the geology indefinite. In panel caving in underground mines, it is essential to characterise and monitor the stress and stability state of production level pillars to ensure the extraction of the mineralised ore column and the safety of workers. Pilar Norte is a sector in the El Teniente mine that forms a pillar between the undercut fronts of the adjacent Esmeralda and Reservas Norte sectors. It exists in a high-stress environment, which may induce damage to the rock mass production pillars. Generally, numerical models are calibrated using observed damage in galleries. This procedure does not discriminate between the structural condition and/or the blasting damage effects. This paper proposes a technique that uses borehole cameras to measure stress-induced damage. This has the advantage of being at the intact rock scale, meaning that the effect of geological structures is negligible and the blasting damage factor is eliminated. Comprehensive geotechnical characterisation and tomography monitoring has been undertaken at Pilar Norte to describe and determine the rock mass behaviour of the production pillars. By combining analytical, empirical and numerical models, a correlation between the measured overbreak recorded by the borehole cameras and the stress level of the pillar was developed. Prospectivity, the relative value of gold, investor confidence, general economic stability and legislation driven by public attitudes are seen as the major influences on the gold mining industry in New Zealand. Since the 1860s the gold mining industry in New Zealand has been subject to the complex interaction of these influences resulting in three successive boom and bust periods. The booms are related to periods of greatest potential economic growth. The busts are more strongly related to downturns in the economy and falling gold price. The influences may be expressed as trends over time. The role of gold has changed from being a currency base to that of a traded commodity. This change has caused price instability and rapid fluctuations in its value. Increased competing land uses, shifting public attitudes and legislative changes have added to the instability of the industry. Reaction against change is to be expected from the companies until new legislation is seen to be functioning efficiently. Other trends show that there has been a tendency towards reduced exploration and consolidation of active gold mining projects. The future consequences of this are likely to be felt both regionally and nationally as there will be no new discoveries to fill production voids which will develop as currently producing mines close. The review of New Zealand's resource use statutes is nearly complete. A period of legislative stability can now be expected. There are some positive signs that consents will be obtained much more quickly than under previous legislation, particularly by those companies which develop the skills to work with the system. The new regime is about consideration of impacts rather than specific activities. This, together with excellent prospectivity, bodes well for the identification of mineral resources in New Zealand.

Ground support performance is critical to the safe and economical extraction of ore. This is particularly important for mass mining extractions at great depth, which are currently being considered by a large number of mining companies worldwide. As the in situ stresses concentrate around critical excavations, failure occurs at the excavation boundaries and ground support is required for the excavations to remain safe and accessible for their intended lifespan. Ground support consists of reinforcing elements that are installed within the rock mass to modify its internal behaviour (generally to within one excavation radius) and surface support elements that are installed at the exposed boundaries to retain the failed pieces of rock. For surface support to be effective, the loadings need to be transferred to the reinforcing elements; however, the combined performance of rock bolts and mesh is poorly understood in terms of the energy dissipation capacity available for a typical ground support scheme implemented at most mass mining operations.Over the last 15 years or so, a large number of large-scale laboratory experiments have been completed at the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) Dynamic Test Facility for reinforcement systems and surface support systems loaded separately. The objective of more recent testing has been to establish the combined energy dissipation capacity of typical and enhanced reinforcement systems combined with mesh surface support. Total energy dissipation has been separated into energy dissipation attributable to the reinforcement and to the mesh. ONE of the phases of mining wide ore-bodies, such as are found in Broken Hill, is the laying-out and design of the sill floor gangway timber, When, in the above operation, a detail has to be repeated frequently, it is desirable in the interests of efficiency that that detail should be standardized as far as possible. Before arriving at a standard design e.g., a crosscut layout-it would seem necessary to compare its strength with some other unit of timber and see that the general design is at least as strong as the unit that has been taken for comparative purposes, In these notes no attempt is made to calculate the stresses to which timber underground is subjected, but merely to draw a comparison between the relative strengths of the various cross sections of timber in common use underground.It has been assumed for the purposes of comparison that the milling exerts pressure in a vertical plane only, and is uniformly distributed over any area. Water is an integral and essential part of mining business. Two issues crucial in the management of this resource, scarcity and excess, are increasing awareness of the importance of water and changing the value perceptions of the industry because they affect both the existence and continuation of the business. Therefore its value should be reflected in the water management that is practised on site. Historically water in mining has been perceived to be of low value so management practices have not been good or well implemented. Political and social transformation in South Africa has been accompanied by the promulgation of new legislation. South African water law is now underpinned by Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) principles. It impacts water pricing, provides for water pollution charges, prioritises water users, has specific mining and water related components and requires water licensing as part of the licence to mine. Mining no longer has a priority on water resources and has to compete with other water users to gain access to resources. New institutional arrangements are being put in place to implement the regulations. All this requires a paradigm shift in miningÆs view of water. Generally the sector is still catching up with the new requirements, principles and philosophies. However, the way in which South African mining values water is changing. This is demonstrated in partnerships between the industry and other water users. These partnerships are Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) in practice and they achieve sustainable development goals. These partnerships are essential for mining to stay in business, expand operational capacity, reduce impacts, prevent legal action and reduce reputational risks.

The structure of a comprehensive research project into mine fires study applying the Ventgraph mine fire simulation software, preplanning of escape scenarios and general interaction with rescue responses is outlined. The project has Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) funding and also relies on substantial mining company site support. This practical input from mine operators is essential and allows the approach to be introduced in the most creditable way. The effort is built around the introduction of fire simulation computer software to the Australian mining industry and the consequent modelling of fire scenarios in selected different mine layouts. Application of the simulation software package to the changing mine layouts requires experience to achieve realistic outcomes. Most Australian mines of size currently use a ventilation network simulation program. Under the project a small subroutine has been written to transfer the input data from the existing mine ventilation network simulation program to æVentgraphÆ. This has been tested successfully. To understand fire simulation behaviour on the mine ventilation system, it is necessary to understood the possible effects of mine fires on various mine ventilation systems correctly first. Case studies demonstrating the possible effects of fires on some typical Australian coal mine ventilation circuits have been examined. The situation in which there is some gas make at the face and effects with fire have also been developed to emphasise how unstable and dangerous situations may arise. The primary objective of the part of the study described in this paper is to use mine fire simulation software to gain better understanding of how spontaneous combustion initiated fires can interact with the complex ventilation behaviour underground during a substantial fire. It focuses on the simulation of spontaneous combustion sourced heatings that develop into open fires. Further, it examines ventilation behaviour effects of spontaneous combustion initiated pillar fires and examines the difficulties these can be present if a ventilation reversal occurs. It also briefly examines simulation of use of the inertisation to assist in mine recovery. Mine fires are recognised across the world as a major hazard issue. New approaches allowing improvement in understanding their consequences have been developed as an aid in handling this complex area.

The small scale alluvial gold mining industry in Papua New Guinea (PNG) is c.irrently the only form of small scale mining carried out in this country. It already contributes significantly to the economy with current production estimated at 2 000-2 500kg per year. Until recently, small scale alluvial gold mining has been confined to simple panning and sluicing of high grade alluvial and colluvial deposits. Traditionally the small scale miner in PNG has only worked gravels with gold grades in excess of 500mg/m3. Grades of this order are required to justify the hard physical labour involved ~n hand operated small scale mining methods. .he introduction of higher throughput technologies such as trommels fed by hydraulic excavators has the effect of altering what constitutes an economically viable deposit. Mechanised techniques allow for the consideration of grades of almost half that level. The potential and opportunities for utilising this type of small scale mechanised mining in PNG are enormous with large areas of ground with gold grades running in excess of 250mg/m3 and often up to 2000mg/m3 throughout the country. An assessment of the current operating economics of this technology in the PNG context is the principal objective of this paper. Small to medium scale mechanised mining can potentially contribute significantly to the PNG economy particularly as it lies within the react-, of many PNG businessmen. Its potential is currently somewhat limited by a general lack of infrastructure and is also constrained by socio-political factors.

The mesothermal quartz-scheelite lodes of the Wakamarina valley are one of twelve known mined or prospected gold-bearing areas in the Marlborough Schist. Recorded production was 556 kg gold, a little silver, and c. 390 t scheelite. 134 m of the 1800 m long Golden Bar reef are accessible in the No 2 level of the Golden Bar mine. The reef is a typical multi-banded mesothermal vein, mostly c. 1.75 m wide, enclosing narrow horses of schist country rock. Scheelite is sparsely distributed, and is more common in small veinlets in the hanging wall schist. The country rocks are textural zone I-1m schists of prehnite-pumpellyite to pumpellyite-actinolite metamorphic facies. Their geochemistry suggests they are part of the Caples Terrane, and of calc-alkaline volcanogenic arc origin. The associated Wakamarina Quartzite is strongly recumbent folded, and of the same metamorphic grade, with abundant pumpellyite, stilpnomelane, and garnet, presumably spessartine. Although it has geochemical signatures of a deep sea sediment, it is depleted in Cr and Cu, and greatly enhanced in K and Ti, when compared with a standard chert. It also has trace element characteristics of a calc-alkaline arc-related sediment. However, associated greenschist has MORB-like incompatible element chemistry. The Golden Bar reef lies within a steeply dipping, normal to transtensional dip-slip fault adjacent to a shallow-dipping mylonite shear zone, which, at least on the footwall side, is 040 m wide. The shear foliation has been severely dragged down to nearly parallel the Golden Bar reef within 1 m of the quartz lode. Preliminary structural analysis suggests that the shear zone is extensional. X-ray diffraction analyses of the wall rocks show a progressive depletion of amphibole, stilpnomelane, and pumpellyite towards the reef, and enhanced illite/muscovite and Kfeldspar adjacent to the lode, along with possible graphitic carbon within 10m. Two zones of intense quartz veining occur, one adjacent to the hanging wall for 12 m and one from 40 m outwards. Quartz vein systems in the country rock are complex and span from pre-schistosity to post-mylonite. They include multiple generations of quartz, actinolite, stilpnomelane, pumpellyite, albite, adularia, chlorites, illite/muscovite, calcite, and scheelite. Metal analyses across the Golden Bar reef showed gold values of 0.13.1 ppm, and low tungsten values, consistent with the observed sporadic scheelite occurrences. As and Sb are at background levels, but enhanced Cr (150 - 430 ppm) relative to the schists (30 - 41 ppm) suggests that the source hydrothermal fluids passed through and leached mafic to ultramafic rocks.

The Greymouth Coalfield contains New Zealand's greatest known resource of bituminous rank coal. The coals are of very high quality, with low ash and sulphur contents and a range of other properties that makes them desirable for a wide range of uses. In fact only a few producers around the world today can offer coals with such exceptional properties. This suggests that Greymouth coal has potential as a premium export trading commodity. These assertions have been largely confirmed by a comprehensive exploration drilling programme funded by Mines Division û Ministry of Energy between 1979 and 1984. The program, forming part of the NZ Coal Resources Survey, was carried out under contract by Lime and Marble Ltd. The drilling of 49 deep, predominantly cored, holes at 1000 m intervals over the coalfield has generated a vast amount of data. It has shown the existence of three major potentially minable coal deposits containing 233 x 106, 33 x 106 and 15 x 106 tonnes of coal in ground. Investigations have at this stage only identified targets and these estimates represent 'in ground' resources, not recoverable reserves. Recent geological studies as well as past and present mining have clearly highlighted the problems posed by the complexity of the coalfield geology. The coalfield lies within a mobile zone in the earth's crust known as the Paporoa Tectonic Zone, which has been active from at least mid-Cretaceous to the present time. Currently this factor poses the greatest obstacle to the determination of mining possibility of the, defined deposit and ultimately will strongly influence any future mining development. The Greymouth Coalfield has, however, had a long and eventful mining history spanning the last 120 years, where 32.5 x 106 tonnes of coal has been won from over 100 mines. In spite of the problems facing development, the large quantities and exceptional quality of the remaining coal will act as a strong inducement to persevere with this difficult but potentially valuable resource.

The removal of rock blockages in mining operations has long been a risky undertaking, especially in high overhead conditions. Moreover, the assessment of where to put charges and the placement of them has been difficult due to the lack of visibility and safe access to the area. Traditionally, wedging long poles with explosives on them to keep the operator at a relatively safe distance has been the tried and true method of attempting to remove the blockages. Unfortunately, this is not a perfect system as it usually takes several attempts to remove the blockage. Each successive attempt results in even more dangerous conditions for workers and/or damage to the mine due to the successively larger amounts of explosives used until the hang-up finally comes down.Over the years, different ideas have been proposed to improve this process and reduce the inherent safety risks. Some of the technologies that have been trialled include projectiles fired at the hang-up; large, cumbersome arms; and massive amounts of explosives, each of which come with their own inherent safety risks that result in dangerous situations for miners and the mine.After gaining a thorough understanding of the process, Penguin Automated Systems Inc has developed a robotic system that is capable of working in a rock blockage safely. The idea combines the latest in telerobotics technology with 3D scanning and underground geospatial positioning. The hang-up removal is performed by scanning the inside of the hang-up to rapidly develop a geospatially placed 3D model for the operator to use. The 3D model is detailed enough that the operator can attempt to pick the ‘keystone’. A blasting engineer or the operator can then determine the exact position where the explosive charge should be placed in the 3D model and thus at the actual hang-up. The operator, controlling the robotic arm, uses the 3D virtual reality model of the robot system and the actual drawpoint information model to display the location information, the arm can then reach into the hang-up to position the charge using the kinematic model of the robot system. The 3D model is used to provide views inside the hang-up so that the operator can move the arm safely and precisely. This process allows the operator to place the charge (using the 3D representation of the drawpoint) from a long distance away. As the process continues, the end of the arm drills the rock and precisely loads the explosives. The robot then returns the blasting cable to the command station, which is located in a truck at a safe distance from the blockage.This paper will review the development of the system and present the results to date.CITATION:Baiden, G, 2016. The dispersion pattern of heavy metals in soil and water is a consequence of complex geophysical and geochemical processes. Metal release from mining sites and subsequent migration occur primarily through acid mine drainage and erosion of waste and tailings dumps. Water plays a significant role in heavy metal mobilisation. Whilst it acts as a storage buffer for the pollutants, it is also the medium in which most of the reactions take place, and is undoubtedly the most significant transport vector in the pollution process. The intrinsic properties of the acidic drainage such as chemical composition, speciation of key mineral components, redox potential and pH are master variables controlling metal release, transport, deposition, reactivity and availability to biota. The mobility of heavy metals is strongly increased by acidification from acid mine drainage, and the discharge of these metals into the receiving waters results in numerous physical, chemical and biological responses in which the environment can affect the metal and vice versa. The result is an overwhelming number of association/dissociation, substitution, adsorption/desorption reactions, giving rise to a complex migration pattern. The attempt to understand and describe the dispersion pattern of heavy metals is complicated by the nature and level of interaction between the geochemical and hydrodynamic processes that generate and control the movement of the pollutants in the geosphere. Transport models which can be used to predict the behaviour of metal pollutants in a natural environment are still in the initial phases of development and their application to real life situations is limited. The Biochemical Cycle adds another dimension to the mobility of heavy metals. Metals form an important component of the food chain for man and plants. Biological uptake of metals from the bedrock and soil by organisms can result in migration paths very difficult to follow. Biodegradation or assimilation is just a tip of the iceberg.

The impact computers are having in geoscience is distinctly mixed. In the petroleum industry where much of the data are based on geophysics, computers have become an integral part of exploration and reservoir evaluation and simulation. In the minerals industry, the trend to computerisation is more advanced in some disciplines than others. Geophysical and remote sensing data are routinely processed and imaged using state of the art computer techniques. Mine surveying, planning, design and resource and ore reserve estimation are now all predominantly reliant on computers. However senior management of many companies, particularly in the mineral exploration industry, are still reticent to fully embrace the technology. 3D computer modelling of geology and orebody delineation is still largely in its infancy. Two current and significant drawbacks to the routine use of computer modelling of geology in both mining and exploration are the tedious and time consuming modelling process and the lack of seamless interaction between 3D computer-aided drafting (CAD) software and geographical information systems (GIS) which are largely 2D in their data treatment. There is an urgent need for a 3D spatial information system (eg 3D GIS) with intelligent and rapid modelling functionality. One of the keys to the successful building of 3D geological computer models begins with data base structure and design to ensure that there is no loss of data fidelity through data capture, storage, manipulation and modelling. Once a model is constructed, the latest generations of visualisation software provide sophisticated environments over a range of hardware platforms for visualisation in both mono and stereo viewing.
