The Martha Mine is an open cut operation situated in the midst of Waihi town which has been operating since 1987. Since then it has produced some 700,000 ounces (oz) of gold and 4,000,000 oz of silver from an epithermal vein system. It was previously worked by underground methods from 1880 to 1952 to a depth of 600 m producing 5 million ounces (Moz) of gold and 30 Moz of silver. The licensed reserves are scheduled to be mined out early in the year 2001. An additional economic resource of over 750,000 oz of gold has been identified which can be accessed by deepening the pit a further 50 m along the main Martha vein. This would extend the mine life to the year 2007. Applications were lodged on 4 July 1997 for the necessary resource consents, discharge permits and variations for the current Mining Licence conditions. The extension project requires approval from the District Council, Regional Council and the Ministry of Commerce. The consent and permitting process is extensive because of the urban setting of the mine. An approach to keep the extension as similar as possible to the current operations was adopted to give the community and authority confidence in the proposed extension. This paper summarises the extension detail and the permitting requirements it has had to address despite the extension being "more of the same". The permitting process has been exhaustive with little recognition of the standards already achieved in protecting the environment which are recognised worldwide.

Traditionally, the development of a mineral resource project goes through a fairly set pattern of decisions from what commodities to search for; where to look; how to locate; what are the reserves; how can they be exploited with optimum returns for all stakeholders; where are the markets and what will be the price received; what financing arrangments? However, due to the unique nature of most mineral resource properties, the relative significance of individual parameters on the ultimate development decision will vary from project to project. Sensitivity analysis in its formal sense is most frequently related to the economic analysis of a project particularly in conjunction with the ultimate development decision making process, and acknowledges the uncertainty of the actual values with their impact on the corporate decision making yardsticks. In many cases, this analysis merely adds more values to confuse the decision makers who may well opt for some subjective rationale to overcome the numeric confusion. However, sensitivity analysis should be used more frequently to exploit the development dollar to its maximum, THROUGHOUT the phases leading to the development decision. It is essential to identify the critical inputs to the various decision tiers in a project as early as possible and direct the funds to ensure that these parameters are determined as accurately as possible. Examples are used to illustrate the need for an even-handed quantification of the parameters which affect the outcome of decisions en route to the final one while minimising the risk in making an optimum assessment in relation to development funds Available.

The Copper Concentrator at Mount Isa Mines Limited treats on average 18 000 tonnes/day of chalcopyrite ore containing typically three per cent copper. The main gangue minerals are iron sulphides (-13 per cent) and non sulphide gangue (-78 per cent). In August, 1991, the comminution flowsheet was changed from a conventional circuit (crusher/rod mill/two stage ball milling) to a modem circuit (fully autogenous grinding/one stage ball milling). The 80 per cent passing size of the flotation feed with the conventional circuit was 125 microns. The Copper Concentrator has two parallel grinding lines, two roughing and scavenging flotation lines, and common cleaning, recleaning and retreatment sections. During the first six weeks of the installation phase, one of the two flotation lines was fed by the conventional grinding circuit and the other by the autogenous grinding circuit. Data from parallel surveys and historical data are used to analyse the rougher/scavenger flotation performance before and after the change. The solid and mineral distributions of the flotation feed, the pulp chemistry and the reagent requirements are compared. The mineral liberation before and after the installation of autogenous grinding is compared on a sized basis using data from the 14 consecutive months before, and the seven months after the change. Liberation was measured using the QEM*SEM(*) instrument. The overall effect of the new grinding circuit on the plant metallurgy is also assessed using the copper recovery values, the dilution of the final concentrate and the distribution of copper losses in the final tailings. For up to 75 years large scale coal mining has been carried out within the Latrobe Valley region of Victoria. Withdrawal of groundwater from Tertiary aged sediments within the Latrobe Valley is essential to allow coal mining to proceed to depth. Water within the overburden layers, coal seams and interseams must be drained to avoid flooding during the mining process. The pressure in deeper aquifers must also be lowered to avoid floor heave, batter instability, and to maintain safe operating conditions as the mines develop in size and depth. The cost-effective management of the groundwater systems at and adjacent to the mining operations in the Latrobe Valley is essential to enable the efficient utilisation of the coal resource whilst minimising the environmental impact of this major industry in rural Victoria. Large-scale depressurisation and dewatering programs within the Latrobe Valley mines are managed through the use of detailed groundwater management plans. These incorporate:an extensive monitoring network which extends up to 60 kilometres from the mines; detailed mine scale and regional groundwater and hydrogeological models; and established operational procedures aimed at minimising capital and operational costs associated with the mine groundwater systems. Groundwater extraction system optimisation programs have been introduced into two of the mines with the aim of reducing extraction rates, improved risk management, and reducing operational costs by approximately whilst not compromising mine safety. This paper reviews the aquifer depressurisation and mine dewatering operations of the Latrobe Valley mines and illustrates the techniques utilised to ensure that high artesian pressures do not adversely impact on the mining operations.

A fully instrumented and bench-mounted diamond drilling machine, purpose designed and built, has been used for investigating the effect of aqueous solutions of various chemical compounds when used as drilling fluids. The rocks investigated were andesite, basalt and granite, the chemical compounds were alkylamines, with various hydrocarbon chain lengths, aluminium chloride and dioxane. Rotation speed seems to be one of the major factors affecting the emergence of mechanochemical effects as the results obtained with aluminium chloride clearly indicate. Penetration rate is either unaf- fected or enhanced by the presence of certain compounds, such as aluminium chloride. On the other hand, penetration rate diminishes when the drilling fluid contains dioxane and exhibits an apparently unpredictable behaviour with alkylamine solutions, although it appears that an increase in hydrocarbon chain length usually equates to an increase in penetration 1. Rock texture seems to have a pronounced effect on test repeatability. With hexadecy- lamine acetate solutions in concentrations ranging from 10-5 to 5 .10-4 molò dm 3 and 41.88 radòs-1 rotation speed, 46 % increments in penetration rate of andesite were observed, with respect to water, whereas penetration rate decreased in basalt by as much as 60¦%o when a dioxane solution was used as drilling fluid. An interpretation of the observed effects is proposed in the light of current knowledge of solid state physics and physical Chemistry.

The investigation of the explosion characteristics of nine Bowen Basin (Central Queensland) dust samples in a suitable coal dust explosion chamber using a new dust concentration probe provides several advances in the area of coal dust explosibility testing. The 20 litre explosion chamber, of novel design, uses rotation of the main body of the chamber together with air jets for dust dispersion, and allows testing of different types of explosion initiators and analysis of the explosion characteristics of coal dust/methane mixtures of varying concentrations.A new development was a dielectric dust probe for the measurement of coal dust concentration. A capacitive micrometry technique was successfully adapted to measure dust concentration. The system uses a ratio-transformer bridge for measurement of small changes in a capacitive probe designed to sample a representative volume. The device is accurate, and is capable of operating in the hostile environment within the explosion chamber.The explosion chamber and dust probe characterise the explosive potential of coal dust samples by determination of the dust lean limit concentration in varying mixture with methane. Plots of lean limit points obtained in this way present an explosion curve for each sample which indicates the potential of the coal dust/methane to explode under the conditions of initiation in the chamber. The explosion curve obtained for each sample presents a unique signature that appears to reflect the physical and chemical characteristics of the dust.The results from this series of laboratory experiments appear to provide a useful index and indicate potential areas of interest for future research.

In order to satisfy environmental and mine operational requirements it is becoming increasingly important to minimise ground blast vibrations at certain locations. These locations are often in soil or on large resonant structures such as grain silos, highway bridges or even the walls of an open pit. A soil monitoring exercise was carried out to evaluate the common practice of coupling vibration detectors to the ground using spikes. At a series of locations in an operating quarry the spiked array response to single blastholes was compared with that of an accelerometer array attached to a calibrated embedded mount. The results clearly showed that the spiked arrays over-estimated the true ground vibration by 46.5 per cent on average, with a maximum observed error of 99.2 per cent. These errors are considered too large for compliance monitoring where accurate vibration levels are required for comparison with prescribed limits. Although spike coupling is convenient, its use for compliance monitoring should be viewed with caution. Unfortunately, however, many manufacturers supply their detectors as spiked arrays. A structural monitoring exercise was also carried out to evaluate the vibration response of a grain silo, highway bridge and a pit wall to the initiation of single blastholes. In this case accelerometers and standard geophones were firmly attached to the bridge which resonated at low frequencies. The results clearly show that, due to their limited low-frequency response, the geophones typically measured only half the true vibration level as measured by the accelerometers.

The Bradford Process, Australian Patent No. 11253, has had considerable application in the treatment plants of Broken Hill mining companies, and is at present being used by the North Broken Hill Limited for the treatment of weathered slime accumulations.The "Mining and Scientific Press," of 28th September, 1918, describes the Bradford Process at Broken Hill, specially featuring its application to slime material at the Proprietary mine-the home of the process.The points then stressed for galena flotation were acidulated slime pulp (0.025 to 0.030% H2S04) at temperature 85° to 90° F. and suitable time contact, with 1.5 to 2 lb. of sodium hyposulphite (per ton on slime) to permit the released S02 to "wet" or depressthe blende mineral. Also 1.0 to 1.3 lb. of crude sulphur (per ton on slime) was burnt, to supply S02 for keeping the lead concentrate clean during flotation. Pulp density varied from 23 to 26% solids. Since 1918 the process has been simplified in its application.Acidity of circuit, temperature, and sodium hyposulphite have been dispensed with, and now the S02 is practically all obtained by burning crude sulphur. A mineralogical analysis has shown that in the Hartebeesfontein ore studied, uranium is associated mainly with uraninite, sulphides such as pyrite and to a lesser degree carbonaceous material such as thucolite. Little could be learned from the literature regarding the mechanism of flotation of these uranium-bearing minerals. A wide variety of reagents were used so that conditions enhancing the flotation of either the sulphides, carbonaceous material, oxides like uraninite, or combinations thereof, were created. As could be expected, the xanthate based floats gave-better selective recovery of sulphides than oleic acid. A substantial fraction of the uranium is associated with pyrite, so that addition of oleic acid to a xanthate float did not enhance the recovery or grade of uranium. After a pre-leach with sulphuric acid in which the pH and Eh were controlled so as to destroy the uraninite, higher uranium recoveries were obtained for the combined float (xanthate, DTP and oleic) and the DTP float. This was most evident when iron was added before flotation. Roasting, which destroyed the sulphides and thucolite, caused a significant decrease in uranium recoveries. The uranium liberated in this way was obviously not flotable in the same way as the uranium liberated from uraninite. A small amount of iron (2 kg/t) added before milling resulted in slightly higher grades and recoveries of sulphur for xanthate based floats. Higher iron additions had a detrimental effect on sulphur recoveries. Even in the case of oleic acid the addition of small amounts of iron had a positive effect on the recovery of sulphur and uranium.

The Australian Coal Combustion Testing and Research Facility has been operating commercially for one year and during that period coal product evaluations have been conducted on behalf of four coal companies and one electricity commission. The facility is equipped to assess the behaviour of steaming coal in milling, combustion (including flame stability, burnout and heat transfer), ash deposition and erosion, fly ash collection and gaseous emissions. The relevance of the results of the pilot testing to industrial practice was demonstrated during the calibration of the facility using four coals burnt in Australian power stations. The calibration coals were from the Tarong and Gladstone Power Stations in Queensland, tluja Power Station in Western Australia and Bayswater Power Station in New South Wales. Also an opportunity arose to visit an overseas power station to observe a full scale test burn using one of the early coals tested on a commercial basis in the combustion test facility. The calibration trials showed excellent agreement with industrial coal performance in t:orms of flame stability, turndown, carbon burnout and gaseous emissions. Encouraging correlations were also found in the case of furnace radiation, boiler deposits (slagging and fouling) and electrostatic precipitation. In the case of the last group the only real reservations about the correlations are due to the non-availability or qualitative nature of results collected around the power stations. In all cases there is a high degree of confidence in the facility's ability to predict the relative performance of different coals and in some cases direct numerical predictions can be Made.

In seeking to improve the economic performance of mines, the management or human aspects are usually seen to be quite seperate from, and more significant than, the technical aspects. There are obvious aspects of industrial relations, man-management, skills training and supervision that are currently the focus of efforts to improve the productivity and quality of the mining process. However technology also has a lot to offer. Analysis of the costs involved suggests that innovations leading to improvement in the productivity of the excavation and transport of overburden and the recovery of coal (both in the mine and preperation plant) can lead to improvements in the economic performance of a mine that may outstrip the obvious non-technical or management opportunities for improvement. While there are some innovations currently being investigated within the industry that relate to the design of mining equipment, the type of machinery being used in open cut mines has not changed dramatically over the last twenty five years. It is also likely that mining equipment will remain essentially of the same form in the forseeable future. If significant improvements to mining performance are to be achieved other than by futher increases in the scale of machinery, then we need to seek ways to operate these same types of machines in a more productive and controlled manner. This paper discusses the identification of mining processes the improvement of which is likely to have a significant effect on mining costs and performance. Some areas of current research are discussed and potentially fruitful areas for future development are identified.

The chemical oxidation kinetics of sphalerite by Fe(III) was studied at various temperatures and size fractions in sulphate media. The kinetics of Zn extraction followed a pore diffusion control mechanism with an apparent activation energy of 54-58 kJ mole. This figure, although high for a pore diffusion control process, is consistent with other studies carried out in sulphate media. An empirical statistical model, relating the extraction time to % Zn extraction, average particle size and temperature, is described by log 1 = 12.22 - 0.017% Ext. - 1.76 log D Av t - 2954 T Parallel studies were also carried out investigating the biological oxidation of sphalerite utilizing the acidophilic autotrophic bacterium Thiobacillus Ferroxidans. The effect of such kinetic parameters as pulp density, particle size and Fe(III) on bacterial growth rate and consequently zinc extraction rate, were studied and where appropriate, optimum conditions for bacterial growth were specified. Based on the results of chemical and biological leaching studies, it was apparent that rapid zinc extraction from sphalerite was predominently due to oxidation by Fe(III). The biological oxidation process catalyses the oxidation and regeneration of Fe(III). The proposed combined chemical-biological leach system was simulated in semi continuous fashion. The Hunter Fracture Zone can be traced into the Fiji group, and onshore SE Viti Levu in the form of NE-trending morphostructures. NW- trending morphostructures offset the NE elements. Structural mapping of Suva Harbour indicates that the NE elements are grabens bordered by faulted monoclines. Faulting is characterised by block-rotations and dip-slip displacements. The NW morphostructures are faults displaying elements of both dip-slip and strike-slip movement. Structural overprinting suggests that the NW faults represent the youngest phase of deformation, and current seismic activity occurs on this trend. A conceptual, geomechanical model of the deformation invokes toppling and wedge failure at the edge of the Fiji platform, translating material downslope into the Hunter Fracture Zone. The interference pattern produced by the superposition of the NW on the NE structures consists of a series of circular features bearing superficial resemblance to volcanic centres. Known mineral deposits in SE Viti Levu correspond closely to these features. The formation of the circular features postdates mineral genesis, suggesting that the features provide a focus for the enhanced exposure of mineral deposits rather than a source of mineralisation. There is a close association between mineralised exposures and interference patterns in extensional structures in SE Viti Levu, and a correlation between these structures onshore, and the Hunter Fracture Zone cum South New Hebrides Trench offshore. Future mineral exploration in the SW Pacific will benefit by closer consideration of the geologic structure of Pacific islands bordering the extensional regimes of deep oceanic trenches.

There is a plethora of activities that have been, and continue to be, performed to improve the health, safety and well-being of workers involved in resource industry activities. These activities include implementation of risk management systems, performing risk assessments, constructing bow-ties, implementing critical control management systems, undertaking personal, process and functional safety initiatives, implementing psychological and physical health as well as industrial hygiene programs. Despite the significant work that has occurred over the last several decades, unacceptable levels of fatalities, injuries and illnesses continue to persist as evidenced by Safe Work Australia statistics.

At Broadlands-Ohaaki geothermal system, TVZ, mineral distribution patterns in geothermal wells are analogous to those in epithermal veins. Fluid flow through geothermal wells is focused over vertical intervals >500 m with discharge at rates up to 90 l/s. Focused flow at similar rates also occurs in natural systems where hydrothermal eruption vents provide enhanced vertical permeability. These vents are commonly aligned with the tectonic fabric, indicating fault control at depth. We suggest that host rock strength and structural context exert significant control on the hydrological regime conducive to epithermal mineralisation.

The An Shan iron ore deposit is the biggest low-grade oxidised iron deposit in China. Over the past ten years, about 120 SLon verticalring-pulsating high gradient magnetic separators units have been installed in An Shan to process oxidised iron ore. This paper describes how several plants have upgraded their old technologies to new technologies with SLon magnetic separators as the key equipment for controlling tails grades, including using reverse flotation as the key technology for iron concentrate cleaning, These plants have been modernised with beneficial results at low cost.

A summary of a proposal to develop a 20 000 tpa underground gold operation in a Forest Park. The environmental constraints are severe and affected the mine development planning and choice of mining method. The mine will use trackless methods to access the narrow 1.5 m ore shoots, and to mine ore by cut and fill methods. The use of Microscoop and CT 1700 HE electric LHDs for mucking, together with special drilling attachments for drilling, is central to efficiency and small Kubota diesel haulers will be used for carrying ore to surface.

The Tennant Creek goldfield is one of the largest gold producing districts in Australia, and major deposits, including Gecko, Juno, Orlando, Peko, Warrego, Nobles Nob, Golden Forty, Argo, TC 8 and White Devil have produced more than four million ounces of gold over the past two decades. Gold-copper-bismuth mineralisation at Tennant Creek occurs in lenticular, ellipsoidal or pipe-like bodies of magnetite-hematite ironstones which are hosted in turbiditic sedimentary rocks of Proterozoic age (Large, 1975; Wedekind, Large and Williams, 1989; Le Messurier, Williams and Blake, 1990; Morrison, Donnellan and Hussey, 1992).

Conceptual studies of the run of mine stockpiling and reclaiming requirements commenced in 1975. Final selection of equipment was made in 1978 and the equipment was commissioned in June, 1979. Equipment selection was made after extensive investigation and visits to existing facilities throughout the world. The equipment selected is described and compared with the alternatives. Foundations were designed to minimise cleanup effort and to ensure stability of equipment under design wind loading without storm bays. Programmable logic control enables the stacking and reclaiming facility to provide a blended feed to the coal preparation plant.

Changes in feed size distribution can have significant effects in rod mill grinding. The product sizing resulting from wet batch milling of a tin ore showed little influence on fines production after truncating the feed at either the coarse or fine end. The addition of fine material caused a less amount of fines to be produced and a possible increase in grinding at coarse sizes, although this is complicated by the changing feed size distribution. The changes in feed size distribution caused no tendency for preferential grinding of the cassiterite.
