F-Series reconciliations are formal comparisons of estimates and measurements of ore quantity and quality made at pre-determined points along the mining value chain. F1 is the ratio of ‘Depleted Grade Control Ore/Depleted Long-term Model Ore’ and validates the models upon which Resource and Reserve statements are based. F2 is the ratio of ‘Produced Tonnes and Grade/Depleted Grade Control Ore (-) Changes in Pre-Crusher Stockpiles’ and validates that the ore tonnes and grade delineated in the pit are being accurately extracted and correctly delivered to the processing plant. These factors provide important corporate assurance for a mining company by providing quantitative feedback on model-predicted tonnes and block grade estimates. Since 2009, BHPs Western Australian Iron Ore F-Series reconciliations have been calculated in a single, centralised sequel-server database. This software routinely collates data regarding mineral resource block model depletions, grade control model depletions, pre-crusher stockpile inventories and production tonnes and grade measurements and then calculates F-Series factors for both tonnes and product quality. This paper will present case studies where reconciliation factors were used to identify improvement opportunities leading to projects that improved our models and subsequent forecasts of production tonnes and quality. In addition, it will show how reconciliation factors are tools that monitor control during periods of rapid change and provide feedback on the effectiveness of improvement projects.

In 2005, Glass Earth Limited (GEL) commissioned two large area detailed airborne geophysical programmes in the Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ). In the first survey Bell Geospace Ltd of Scotland conducted an Air-FTG« (airborne Full Tensor Gravity Gradiometry) survey covering 2338km2 at 300m line spacing. The second survey by UTS Geophysics, Australia included detailed airborne magnetic, radiometric and digital terrain data capture covering 5341km2 at 150m line spacing.   From the detailed geophysical data collected it is possible to identify major deeply penetrative crustal structures within the TVZ, as well as define subsurface geological features, such as intrusive bodies and alteration zones. These major deep crustal structures are thought to have a controlling influence on the distribution of epithermal gold mineralising systems, and along the corridors defined by these deep crustal zones, the chances of discovery of an economic epithermal gold discovery are greatly increased.   In this paper GEL gives some examples of the application of its integrated data driven approach to exploration in the TVZ at both regional and project scale. The paper focuses on how GEL identifies regional scale highly prospective deep crustal structures. Then, using the Horohoro epithermal gold system as an example, we show how GEL applies innovative geological and geophysical data processing to model and understand detailed subsurface geology, focusing subsequent exploration to ensure the best opportunity for a new economic epithermal gold discovery.

In 1984/85 financial year Australia produced 529 thousand barrels per day (kbd) of crude oil. By far the major contribution (453 kbd) was light waxy oil from offshore Gippsland, Victoria. When these discoveries were made in the latter 1960s, imported oil was available in abundant supply and at low prices. Because of this, the Gippsland producers persuaded Government to control the marketing and pricing of their crude, and thus provide the required security of offtake. Political events in the middle East created supply shortages during the 1970s, and dragged up government selling prices for OPEC crude oil. Thus Arab Light crude that sold for less than US$2/barrel (bl) in 1970 reached $34/bl in 1981. Following the consequent decline in world oil demand, in 1982, Australian refiners sought to evade their obligation to lift Gippsland crude. Hence, in 1983, the Government was forced to introduce a floor quota of 385 kbd of Gippsland crude liftings and to allow producers to export any additional production refiners did not require. On expiry of the old arrangements, Government introduced a partial free market from January 1985, whereby the balance in excess of 350 kbd may be sold to Australian refiners at negotiated prices, or exported as before. In 1984/85 exports were some 90 kbd and will be higher in the current year. About half this total has been exported by BHP, providing valuable experience and lessons which are described in the paper.

Faced with the need to improve workplace conditions in both its development and production headings in its existing K1 orebody, as well as its new K Link and K2 orebodies, the Kencana mine in Indonesia took the novel approach of reversing the ventilation on most of its access ramp by outcasting up the ramp to the portal. Working levels were then fed with fresh air via auxiliary fans sealed into the current surface ‘egress’ intake raises (ladderways) or another small surface intake raisebore rather than from fans hung in the ramp as in the past. Outcasting the portal provided a substantial increase in the total mine exhaust capacity allowing fewer levels to be ventilated in series and significantly improving conditions, especially in the most difficult workplaces to ventilate. It also reduced the consequences if there was to be a fire on a vehicle in the ramp. The same system using the ramp as an exhaust is also intended to be used as part of the final ventilation solution for the new K2 orebody which also uses a novel single surface ventilation shaft that is vertically split into separate intake and exhaust compartments using a concrete brattice. Using the main ramp as an exhaust has potential application in many other operations in Australia using surface ramps which otherwise frequently suffer from overuse of series ventilation circuits and poor working conditions at the mine bottom.

In the last 40 years, New Zealand has developed a number of liquid- dominated geothermal steam fields, for electricity generation and indus- trial process steam. New technologies were developed, and in this work, New Zealand led the world. The policy of full publication of the results, in a wide range of sciences, provided a reservoir of detailed data defin- ing the geology, size and shape, and the chemical and physical regime, of many geothermal fields and their constituent parts. The discovery of precious and base metal deposits /precipitates in geothermal drill cores and steamfield equipment, suggested a clear link- age with epithermal mineral fields in general, and with that of the Coromandel (Hauraki) Region in particular. Further work on geothermal/ epithermal relationships have implied that the techniques, developed to obtain an understanding of geothermal fields, could be applied also to epithermal mineral exploration. This work is developing fast, and is now proceeding in many coun- tries. Future work may show that the presumed relationship between geothermal and epithermal deposits may be applicable in the wider con- texts of all hydrothermal deposits, and possibly in many other minera- lised areas with volcanic "country rocks".

Optimisation of the underground mining production process benefits from informed decision making during the process of explosive rock fragmentation. Selection of the most appropriate bulk explosive products for underground production blasting is an area of endeavour that offers significant economic upside if correctly and thoroughly undertaken. The explosive selection process is facilitated by a clear understanding of:the physical and detonic properties of the alternative explosive options available; the response of different rock masses to these different explosive options; and the importance of maintaining a clear focus on desirable blast outcomes in order to enhance value creation aspects of the mining production process. The level of understanding of these issues is raised through the application of measurement and modelling technology, quantifying the effects of blast design (and implementation) on process outcomes. Homestake Darlot and DynoConsult applied a range of dynamic blast measurement and outcome modelling techniques in order to explore the relationship between rock properties, explosive properties and mining process efficiencies. A campaign of vibration and explosive Velocity of Detonation (VoD) measurement produced feed data for use in vibration and fragmentation modelling during the extraction of one of the major stoping blocks at Darlot Gold Mine. The paper describes the use of these tools and discusses the understanding gained concerning the limitations and capabilities of, and the reconciliation between, a selection of analysis and modelling approaches.

The current climate in the mining industry is allowing mining companies to further broaden their views and investigate technologies to improve the safety, efficiency and cost-effectiveness of their operations. Furthermore, underground mine environments will become more demanding for mining equipment and personnel as orebodies become deeper in weaker ground conditions with more extreme environmental conditions. Loading and hauling can represent significant components of the production cycle of an underground mine and automation of these activities can offer considerable benefits. Sandvik has accumulated a long history and experience in loading and hauling automation in underground mining. Since the late 1980s Sandvik has actively participated in several major research and development automation programs leading to the commencement of the development of an integrated system for semiautomated loading in 1999. Development work was later conducted to expand the capabilities of the system for automated hauling during 2001 and the AutoMine« system became commercially available. The first delivery of the AutoMine« system was completed in August 2004 in South America, where the system continues to operate in a full-scale production environment and is being expanded as the production area enlarges. Further systems have been delivered and are operational in North America, Africa and Europe. This paper focuses on the AutoMine« system deployed in Block 4 at De Beers Finsch Mine in South Africa. An overview of the mine and the process used to acquire the system and the key drivers which led to the selection of an automated solution are described. An overview of the initial system installation, subsequent expansions and future plans are presented. This is followed by a summary of the implementation and operational experiences associated with automated underground operations. The paper concludes by summarising the benefits that have been realised.

Hillgrove Resources (HGO) commenced open pit mining in 2011 and from 2011 to 2016 the geology team experienced a consistent negative reconciliation between grade control estimated copper (Cu) grade and the mill received grade. For the first four years, despite trialling various grade control strategies, the monthly variance between geology and mill copper grades fluctuated between -5 per cent to -17 per cent Cu metal depending on the style of mineralisation.In 2015, HGO embarked on various measures which resulted in changes to grade control practices under the advice of consultants. These changes to grade control sampling, estimation and block out practices resulted in six to seven months of consistently poor Mine to Mill reconciliations from -25 per cent to -28 per cent Cu.In an effort to mitigate these poor reconciliations the geology team reintroduced the preconsultant block out and geology driven grade control methods. Blockout reconciliations from this point emulated those seen originally from -8 per cent to -12 per cent (Cu per cent). Early in 2016 the geology team introduced conditional simulation for grade control as opposed to ordinary kriging to better characterise the grade distribution, introduced separate estimation parameters appropriate for every zone of mineralisation, implemented a maximum profit function to optimise the selection of ore and waste, and retained the geology driven block out processes. Since March 2016 the mine has experienced consecutive months of positive Mine to Mill reconciliations, the first seen in six years. Year to date the expected copper metal is within 1 per cent of mill reconciled copper metal.This paper will compare the various sampling methods, estimation algorithms and block out procedures from the past six years to arrive at a robust open pit operating procedure applicable for mineralisation with high short scale variability.CITATION:Reid, M and Arbon, H, 2017. "Three issues of relevance in a modern tailings storage facility (TSF) are:geotechnical stabilitymanaging acid rock drainage (ARD) from pyritic tailingsmanaging the tailings from cyanidation of gold ores. Drawing on examples from both copper porphyry flotation and sulfide-hosted gold ores, this paper demonstrates that giving some weight and importance to the process tails properties upfront can influence the flow sheet and not only improve tailings management effectiveness but also impact positively on economics. In the case of a typical copper porphyry ore with moderate pyrite content, the rougher tail in a conventional high pH selective flotation step is usually classified as potentially acid generating (PAG). To avoid the generation of ARD within the tailings and the requirement for a costly plastic lining, subaqueous deposition is recommended, which in turn has negative implications for tailings stability, consolidation and closure. Adopting a neutral pH rougher stage rejects silicate gangue but recovers pyritic material to the cleaners for a subsequent selective flotation stage, often after regrinding. This effectively quarantines the PAG pyritic material in a much lower volume cleaner tail, which can then be appropriately encapsulated within a larger non-lined flotation tails facility. It also facilitates cyanide leaching of the cleaner tail for gold recovery, with the encapsulated tailings facility being suitable for cyanidation tails storage. A case study from Europe is examined. For gold ores where the gold is sulfide-hosted, but not refractory, a flotation route with cyanidation of the concentrate can similarly produce the majority of tailings as a benign flotation tail and again quarantine the low volume concentrate leach tail in a small encapsulated cell with appropriate residual cyanide management measures applied. Overall economics for intensive leaching of a low volume concentrate stream can also be surprisingly positive. A feasibility study design example of the process and TSF is presented. As mining companies have to go deeper in search of ore and coal, the importance of protecting the highwall increases. Wall fatigue also increases with importance of the long life expectancy of a highwall, in particular the impact of fatigue influenced by resonance. Resonance is the tendency of a material to oscillate with greater amplitude at certain frequencies when exposed to a periodic force. Until recently, only dominant frequencies, either natural or induced, were all that could be measured through the fast Fourier transform of the blast-induced wave form.This paper presents a novel method to accurately predict the resonant frequency of a highwall. In fact, the method can predict the natural frequencies between any two monitoring points placed in line with the source of impact, and as such it can be used to determine the resonant frequencies of any physical object. The method not only predicts the resonant frequencies of the material; it predicts the structural response of the total frequency spectrum. This method helps describe the response of a mechanical structure to excitation. It describes the structure’s efficiency in the use of energy, that is, whether energy is dampened or consumed in resonance.The initial predictions have been so accurate that it made it possible to determine the fundamental frequency and the first six harmonics of a highwall in a northern Queensland coalmine. With the use of electronic detonators, the blast can be timed with a repeating delay to create an induced artificial frequency that has been determined to retain the least amount of energy.CITATION:Osterman, R, 2015. Froth flotation is widely used for the separation of particulate materials in the world. It is a complex process whose operational behaviour in process plants is difficult to predict. A comprehensive phenomenological dynamic flotation model was presented at the 1982 IMPC. This model uniquely linked the particle/bubble interactions and water transport phenomena to the flotation cell hydrodynamics. The model was used as a dynamic framework to analyse and develop process optimisation strategies. New developments in mineralogical characterisation, real time information management systems and data validation simplify the implementation of flotation technologies for mine to mill grade recovery optimisation. With recent developments in software programming, dynamic simulation enables process engineers to develop process alternatives interactively. This paper presents such an implementation of current process analysis tools and an updated froth flotation dynamic model. It demonstrates how this new environment can be used to improve our technological knowledge of flotation, eg alternative bubble/particle attachment and detachment microprocesses can be incorporated. The dynamic flotation model has several manipulated variables (such as feed flow rate, per cent solids, aeration, wash water flow rate, frother flow rate, specific power energy (impeller speed/delta pressure), cell geometry and tails flow rate) and evaluates the dynamic effects of these variables on grade and recovery.

Despite the importance of the primary crushing stage, performance optimisation is not well analysed with sufficient focus to give improvement opportunities. At the Newcrest owned Telfer operation, liner life plays an important part in scheduling planned maintenance. Major consideration is given to monitoring crusher performance, as the highly abrasive nature of the feed significantly impacts the liner wear life. A study was undertaken by the lead author which focused on establishing a strong baseline of accurate data pertaining to the performance of the crusher, in terms of, operating parameters, liner life and key machine design factors. As part of the study, mining feed materials were examined for a particular set of liners and this revealed that improved methods should be pursued. Due to the competitive nature of the mining industry, the business solution to complex problems with long shutdown cycles should be streamlined to incorporate a non-operational modelling approach that is significantly more efficient than traditional online trial and error methods. In order to dramatically reduce the time and business risks, it was decided to engage services to model and simulate the liner life by varying main operational and mechanical factors. The key to all simulation work is gathering high quality baseline data. Such data allowed deployment of the Kinematic Crusher Model and validation of the model against worn 2D wear liner profiles. The proven model was then successfully deployed to predict operational values that defined crusher performance. To enhance the study, further investigation into a set of mechanical and operational simulations generated a sensitivity matrix measuring key performance parameters throughout the wear life of the liners. The study revealed throughput as a highly sensitive parameter and a change in eccentric throw provided the greatest improvement in extending liner wear life.

Newcrest Mining LimitedÆs Telfer Mine is a world-class gold and copper producer, situated in the Great Sandy Desert, in the north west of Western Australia. The mine has a number of distinctive characteristics such as being one of AustraliaÆs most remote mine sites, being within 270 km of the hottest town in the southern hemisphere (Marble Bar) and having been shut down and reopened after a two-year feasibility study. The construction of a new plant and reopening of the mine gave Newcrest the opportunity to review their mining practices and systems including the opportunity to incorporate reconciliation as a core process. Telfer is now well on the way to being one of the largest gold and copper concentrate producers in Australia. When the mine reopened in June 2003, Telfer implemented SnowdenÆs Reconcilor software system to facilitate reconciliation of geological models, production data and plant measurements. The system was implemented on site in June 2004, as a web-based information management system, integrating other existing mining and plant software packages. It continues to provide an auditable process and consistency of data, providing ease of analysis with standard and customised reporting. This paper provides a case study of the reconciliation system implementation at Telfer. It outlines the consolidation of a number of management systems into one centralised system that can be used to compare and reconcile the tonnes and grades from the mine through to the mill. The authors outline the key estimates and measures that are used for reconciliation at Telfer, detailing the characteristics of the system used to capture the information and the benefits that have been gained through the use of a rigorous reconciliation process on a complex orebody.

A sulfide ion selective electrode was used to control sulfidiser addition in the flotation testing of a synthetic and a naturally occurring ore containing malachite in order to compare the behaviour of sodium sulfide and calcium polysulfide. Both slug and controlled potential sulfidisation methods of addition were used. Under defined optimum CPS conditions, calcium polysulfide was a more effective sulfidising agent than sodium sulfide on the basis of both capital and operating costs. Surface and solution studies were used to compare the mechanism of each sulfidiser. For calcium polysulfide, XPS showed that polysulfide ions are adsorbed, whereas for sodium sulfide it is the hydrosulfide ions that are adsorbed on the mineral surface. For calcium polysulfide, the CuSx layer was believed to form on the malachite surface, which promoted the flotation of the malachite, by xanthate. Studies of surface morphology of the sulfidised malachite showed that a fairly uniform sulfidised layer is formed with both reagents. The use of sodium sulfide resulted in a thinner initial sulfidised layer compared to polysulfide at equivalent initial sulfur concentration.

Optimal drill and blast design is a process often neglected by many underground hard rock mines. This is even more important to the new mine where ring designs need to be implemented and refined in a short period of time. In today's environment where more and more mining is being carried out by contract specialists it is the co-operation between a principal and contractor, who are working towards a common goal, that achieves the highest quality end result. The development of drill and blast designs that cause minimal damage to the mine infrastructure is particularly important to Northparke's E26 Block Cave Mine, as it consists of a single extraction level which must survive intact for the life of the mine. The advanced undercut mining method implemented at Northparkes is fired in a sequence which protects the mine development from potentially damaging abutment stress. This paper details how blast designs will be optimised and sequenced to satisfy the conflicting objectives of maximum rock breakage inside the drill pattern and minimum rock damage outside the pattern.

Most world-class high-grade (60 - 67 wt per cent Fe) hematite iron ore deposits are the product of enrichment of Precambrian iron-formations but processes responsible for enrichment are still unclear. Different models, ranging from syngenetic and diagenetic (King, 1989), deep-seated hydrothermal (Powell et al, 1999; Barley et al, 1999; Taylor et al, 2001; Gutzmer et al, 2002) and ancient supergene (Morris, 1980; 1985; Van Schalkwyk and Beukes, 1986) to modern supergene (MacLeod, 1966) have been suggested. The high-grade hematite deposits stand in contrast to martiteûgoethite ores which are generally accepted to be the result of supergene enrichment of iron-formation because they are found along Cretaceous to Tertiary lateritic weathering profiles (Morris, 1980; Harmsworth et al, 1990). Uncertainties about the origin of the high-grade hematite ores appear largely due to the monomineralic composition of the ores. They are almost exclusively composed of hematite (as microcrystalline hematite and martite), a mineral with wide stability field and very simple chemical composition that reveals little about its origin. Second, many of the deposits have been overprinted by later deformation and chemical weathering obscuring primary ore characteristics and zonation (Taylor et al, 2001). Third, surprisingly few detailed geological studies have been undertaken on the deposits with the aim of unraveling ore genesis. Most studies focus on the present-day structure of orebodies and their general physical-chemical composition for mining and beneficiation purposes. A more thorough understanding of the origin of high-grade hematite iron ore deposits may be gained by combining available mining-orientated data with systematic petrographic-geochemical analyses of different ore generations and hematite phases. This paper presents a first summary of results of an ongoing study, started some two years ago, of high-grade iron ore deposits in South Africa, India and Brazil, including a comparison with the rather well studied deposits of the Hamersley Province in Australia.

Opportunities to improve mill operations are often cited by mining companies and recognised in many concentrators spread throughout the world but are not always followed through. Copper-molybdenum concentrator operations are challenged by a continuously increasing list of detrimental factors. They include deteriorating ore characteristics and poor mineralogical information on deeper ores, water quality and availability, steel wear and increasing power costs. Rapidly declining productivity, sustainability and environmental factors, new taxes, mining industry global skill set shortages, to name but a few, must also be considered. The days of maximising value by just increasing production or simple cost cutting are fading and will not be sufficient for the future of more complex mineral processing operations and larger plants. As a result, FLSmidth’s Global Process Technology Group has launched a plant and process optimisation program based on mineralogical and metallurgical surveys.Copper-molybdenum concentrators of the future need a paradigm shift. Modelling and simulation tools alone are not the answer to complex mineralogical associations and larger scale equipment and operations. Detailed area by area review aimed at identifying process constraints in terms of equipment and operating practice in conjunction with robust diagnostic work, ie mineralogical and metallurgical characterisation, are mandatory for process optimisation. The navigational beacon, for all operations who want to remain competitive, will be ‘process efficiency’. Since the use of automated mineral analysers has become more readily available and reliable, mineralogical-metallurgical plant surveys have proven themselves as the most efficient tool for optimising plant performance.The following paper will illustrate how operations can move toward eliminating under-performing flow sheets, fixing run-away flotation conditions, maximising individual process equipment performance, preventing shortcuts in Bond work index testing which may cause the failure of comminution models and minimising costly and time-consuming ‘debottlenecking’. As previous plant surveys have shown, the net project cash flow can be increased by 50 to 200 per cent if a combination of robust ore characterisation and plant process mineralogy is performed. The combined plant survey approach has been demonstrated successfully in a multitude of operations. Schalker Eisenhütte und Maschinenfabrik GmbH, Nordic Minesteel Technologies and Bombardier Transportation have developed an evaluation tool that considers the main cost drivers of the rail, truck and conveyor haulage systems on the market today. In almost every circumstance, the advantages of a haulage solution are clear. A haulage system is outlined that is fully automated, including driverless operation, and that provides increased tonnage, safety and equipment life and reduced maintenance downtime. This paper summarises work undertaken to date as part of an investigation into the mineral resources of the proposedNorth West South Island National Park. The area covered by the proposed national park is underlain by many rock types that have undergone a long and complex history of evolution which has endowed it with some of the best potential for a wide range of different minerals in New Zealand. Many of these minerals occur only in this area or in Fiordland National Park.   The first gold-rush in the area occurred in 1856 and followed the discovery of payable gold at Lightbands Gully, south of Collingwood. The miners first focused on the alluvial deposits but soon shifted attention to lode potential. The total historical gold production for the area may be over 400 000 oz (NZ$250 - NZ$295.6 M at 1993 prices).   In addition to gold, a wide range of other minerals have been reported from the area including molybdenum, copper, nickel, zinc, silver, bismuth, stibnite, lead and antimony. The Onekaka iron-ore deposits have produced small tonnages of ochre and iron-ore at various times. Tungsten, platinoids and other metals have been. given only minor attention. The diverse geology of the Northwest Nelson has resulted in the occurrence of many industrial minerals which have been exploited in generally small-scale operations. Aggregate, chrysotile asbestos, clay, dolomite, marble, limestone, dimension stone, rip-rap, talc-magnesite and wollastonite have all been produced.

Young professionals are riding the current wave of high demand for their services and relatively little competition for placements. The attraction and retention of quality incumbents has therefore become a significant strategic issue for companies in our industry. Money is important, but poorly structured career development and lack of learning opportunities can discourage the highest paid professionals from being enthusiastic and striving for excellence. This will inevitably lead to the search for a new position. Important factors at play include the young professionalÆs lack of understanding of career pathways and poor quality, or lack of, structured on-the-job training and professional development. Too often young and not so young professionals are faced with the reality that fabulous looking (and paying) jobs can be quickly reduced to the monotony of repetitive tasks in an isolating environment. While it is the responsibility of the incumbent to manage their own career and professional development, without experience, how is anyone meant to understand the importance of their roles and the options for career development? Mentoring is therefore essential to the strategic plans of every organisation and the strategic plans of every professional. Mentors will accelerate learning, guide decision making and develop both competency and confidence as they share their experience, both technical and regarding the machinations of a particular discipline, within our industry. Mentors need not be from the same organisation as the mentee and in some cases this may be a distinct advantage. This paper discusses mentoring as an opportunity for young professionals and mentors to initiate and maintain a supportive relationship, the responsibility of management to get mentoring right and the responsibility of young professionals to demand the opportunity for professional development through mentoring.
