As the mining industry faces times of change, new challenges arise to ensure raw material supply for the younger and future generations. Different scenarios are currently shaping the way we mine and teach mining engineering. Led by an increasing demand for raw materials, net zero requirements for improving long-term operation performance, technological advancements such as automation and digitalisation, safety improvements, environmental considerations and a need for social acceptance, mining is pursuing to change and adapt to these requirements at a faster pace. Such changing times raise new concerns, one of the most relevant is the lower number of students interested or enrolling in mining engineering and related fields leaving mining engineering as one of the less preferred career options between the younger generations. Nonetheless, it is essential to continue addressing and supplying the skill sets that is suited to contemporary and future of the mining industry. To this end, globally, academia is currently undergoing several initiatives such as curricula updates and adaptation, up skilling, improving teaching practices and techniques, including e-learning techniques, enhancing industry-academia and inter-university collaboration, and much more

The mining industry has undergone a profound and transformative shift in recent years, driven by the rapid advancement of emerging technologies such as automation, digitalisation, and electrification. These technological innovations have not only revolutionised operational efficiency and productivity but have also introduced an imperative need for new and innovative approaches to conducting mining activities. Specifically, the mines of the future face a new series of complex challenges when planning and developing greenfield or brownfield mining projects in the 21st century. These challenges include greater operational depths, higher seismicity levels, higher rock temperatures, increased environmental constraints and sustainability requirements, a higher degree of interoperability, lack of skilled workforce, and the need for sustainable and eco-friendly mining practices. Consequently, there is an essential need to formulate novel strategies and robust planning methodologies that re-evaluate how mines are planned, executed, and managed, from the early exploration stages to the post-mining era and the consequent uses of mine sites. This research focuses on identifying the factors influencing the implementation of modern technologies, such as autonomous machinery in mining operations, and their impact on mining method selection and longterm mine planning. The findings underscore a crucial need for a paradigm shift in how mines are planned and developed, going beyond mining method selection, which primarily focuses on geological and economic factors, and must evolve to incorporate the multifaceted implications of modern mining operations.

Hunter Valley Operations in partnership with Orica Explosives designed a process to optimise coal extraction at depths greater than 65 m below the Hunter River in a safe and cost effective manner. The process involved a team approach to investigate the relationship between geology, mining sequence, vibration and blasting methods adopted. From this an optimum method for uncovering the coal was developed.

Ingress of air into the longwall goaf environment needs to be managed appropriately to reduce the risk of creating a spontaneous combustion event. The maingate goaf edge is an area of particular concern in this respect, as air often penetrates for some distance into the goaf along this region inbye of the longwall face. Since the flow rate in this part of the goaf is also quite low, an opportunity exists to disrupt the air pathway by implementing a barrier to the airflow. Previous attempts using plugs made from an assortment of materials have resulted in varying degrees of success. More recently, Narrabri Coal Operations (NCO) has introduced the use of a chemical foam that is mixed with nitrogen to produce a standing barrier with the consistency of shaving cream. The implementation of this practice has consistently proven to be very effective for reducing the oxygen concentration along the maingate goaf edge by systematically retreating the foaming unit with the longwall. This paper presents how the foam is applied in the underground goaf environment to prevent oxygen ingress and uses results from gas monitoring to confirm the foam effectiveness.

Considering future water scenarios, as influenced by the increasing scarcity of water and the move towards sustainable process engineering etc, the closed water circuit becomes an important point of study in metallurgical operations, such as in milling and flotation. However, a deterrent in the use of recycled process water is often a lack of understanding of the effects of the accumulation of dissolved ions and other process chemicals. Recovery of the valuable minerals may be impacted by the concomitant complex mineral-pulp chemistry interactions. Literature indicates that these interactions are not necessarily antagonistic to process outcomes. Wet milling using steel media results in the dissolution of Fe from the media, the rate of which is dependent, inter alia, on the type of media and the chemical conditions of the aqueous environment in the mill. The pulp-phase interactions of dissolved ions with sulfide minerals may result in significant changes to the chemical conditions in the mill, which may subsequently impact negatively on the flotation recoveries. To understand the effect of these interactions in the context of the processing of sulfide minerals, this study seeks to consider the effect of three factors, viz mineral type – pyrite (Py) and galena (Gn) -, milling media of different compositions – forged steel (FS), 21 per cent high chrome and ceramic media -, and water chemistry, viz, deionised water (DI) and synthetic plant water (SPW). Ceramic media and galena are used for the respective control cases where the milling media and sulfide mineral contribute no Fe species. Using DI as a control case, a high ionic strength case is used to mimic the changes in water chemistry for a closed water circuit. Batch flotation tests are used as a diagnostic tool to determine the effects of these media-water-mineral interactions to investigate correlations between the chemical reactions occurring and chemical species present during the milling process and the ultimate flotation performance.

Rock blasting outcomes are often a shared responsibility of both the mine operations group and the mine geotechnical group. From an operational logistics and planning perspective, blasting concerns include optimal fragmentation for subsequent crushing, ensuring the blast is energetic enough to allow easy digging, and understanding the effect of muck from a previous blast on the current blast. From a geotechnical perspective, wall damage and catch bench capacity are the primary concerns. Other concerns for both teams include damage to mine infrastructure by fly rock or blast-induced vibrations, and the stability of open stopes under the pit. This work presents two blast modelling applications (or ‘apps’). The basic app instantly gives fragmentation and wall damage predictions for a given generic blast design. The advanced app loads the current pit contours, reads the blast design from a spreadsheet, and calculates the expected vibration magnitude and peak frequency. The apps have been developed specifically for the Rio Tinto Borates and Lithium Mine in California and are used to support blast design between the operations group and geotechnical group. The basic app instantly gives fragmentation and vibration predictions given a blast design by combining the Kuz-Ram fragmentation model with the scaled distance model for vibrations. The advanced app uses the signature hole method. Blasting outcomes at the mine have improved since using the apps.

During the 110 years since the discovery of the Broken Hill PbZnAg deposit six major mining companies have mined the ore body and explored the ore environment. Despite this activity, no new orebodies have been found at Broken Hill. The failure to discover large new resources cannot be attributed to a lack of activity because major companies have maintained substantial exploration commitments over many decades. This suggests that not only was a unique coincidence of conditions required to form the deposit but also that full recognition and definition of the critical parameters may not yet have been recognised. In an attempt to illuminate some of the more unusual and poorly studied characteristics of the ore environment some new areas of investigation are presented here which may contribute to understanding the ore deposit setting and focus exploration towards different and perhaps more productive targets. Sedimentological characteristics of the host succession of the Broken Hill deposit are apparently unique along the line of lode. An upward-coarsening megasequence reflected in the development of clastic psammites stratigraphically below the ore deposit is one important ingredient which has received little exploration focus. These psammites also host mineralisation and form part of a spectrum of quart-zrich rocks collectively referred to as gametiferous psammites, garnet quartzites and blue quartz lodes. Sedimentological data interpreted from outcrop, drill core and downhole geophysical well logs support a elastic origin for some of these rocks; an interpretation which is at variance with traditional interpretations favouring an exhalative origin. A clastic origin for many of the footwall psammites, and their close spatial association with the orebodies suggests their role in ore formation was important. It is interpreted as a critical part of the fluid flow architecture within the sedimentary basin, which focussed ore forming fluids into an unique environment favourable for trapping mineralisation. Detailed stratigraphic correlation near the deposit has also highlighted that quartzofeldspathic rocks (Potosi gneisses and lode pegmatites) have complex relationships with ore. Suites of stratabound quartzofeldspathic pegmatites have received limited study, but their distribution and voluminous development suggests they may be as important to ore formation as the psammitic lode rocks which host the orebodies. These associations are not in conflict with some recent ore forming models invoking deposition in a shallow water environments of deposition. The geochemistry of parts of the host sequence has been studied extensively in the past but this has not been merged with current stratigraphic subdivisions. A large drillhole data base now permits the geochemistry to be related to the sedimentary succession and reveals that a signature involving stratigraphic vectors best illustrated by changes in MnO, Na2O, Pb and Zn can be detected. This is interpreted to reflect sedimentary basin processes as opposed to a classical volcanic hydrothermal alteration pipe associated with seafloor venting. The stratigraphic setting together with characteristics of some of these poorly understood areas is discussed to emphasise that construction of sound models for exploration requires the total ore environment to be studied with attention directed to the geometry and setting of the full range of host rocks. Control of the greater portion of the line of lode by a single company, Pasminco Australia Limited, now permits disparate datasets and observations to be merged and presents new opportunities and encouragement for model refinement and exploration success.

The optimisation of an open pit mine can be broadly split into two stages, the first being the ultimate pit optimisation (and subsequent stage designs), and the second being schedule optimisation. Macroeconomic uncertainty clearly impacts on both however interrelationships do also exist. Generally, the opportunity exists for the ultimate pit to be revised during each planning cycle, however when this reprieve is removed the uncertainty for the underlying business increases. As one example, the introduction of an in-pit waste dump can be seen to significantly limit the option to revise the ultimate pit. When in this situation there are two potential risks that present: (i) the long-term price used for the ultimate pit selection is optimistic, and too large of a pit is selected resulting in waste being mined which uncovers material not of a significant value to deliver a profit; (ii) the long-term price used for the ultimate pit selection is pessimistic, too small of an ultimate pit is selected, and ore of realisable economic value left behind. Understanding and quantifying residual risk is the key to the successful closure and rehabilitation of mines. An important aspect of residual risk is predicting the long-term chemistry of mine water and the long-term geochemical stability of mining wastes. This requires updating the characterisation data for mine wastes and monitoring mine drainage throughout the life-of-mine. The intrinsic properties of waste materials (ie the geology, mineralogy and the weathering processes, which in turn depend on the local climate and water balance in a waste storage facility) are the fundamental controlling factors of residual risk. In this paper, case studies of coal and metalliferous mines are used to discuss the definition of residual risk for a range of waste storage facilities and to highlight the benefits and limitations of current geochemical methods in predicting and quantifying residual risk. Native seed and plants are often a core input into the rehabilitation process of mine closure. Native plant establishment rate and performance is a function of many input elements including seed quality (purity and germination percentage), processing, treatment, storage, supply chain handling, application and ongoing management. Traditionally native seed has been supplied with very limited supporting information which in some cases has led to establishment failures, repeated attempts at successful plantings, and biosecurity issues, leading to increased rehabilitation costs for mining companies. Product procurement scrutiny, and sustainability credential requirements, in all supply chains is increasing the need for transparent, accurate, verified, and certified information. This collectively continues to evolve towards a social license to operate in all industries, including mining. The Australian Seeds Authority (ASA), in partnership with native seed supplier AustraHort, traceability software company Trust Provenance and supporting partners including Transport for NSW and Queensland Transport and Main Roads (TMR), were recipients of a DAWE National Traceability Grant. The project team has developed a framework and traceability software platform currently being piloted within the Australian native seed industry. The framework and platform allow for all critical-tracking-events along the journey of a native seed batch to be easily captured utilising a smart phone application (APP) and the global standard for data capture. The platform provides a unique identification for each batch of seed and critical tracking event. The batch ID belongs to that batch and all supply chain stakeholders can contribute to batch traceability by providing more information/data to increase information integrity. This gives the end user, and other stakeholders, increased levels of trust in the product to support value, increase efficiency and reduce costs. For mining companies these efficiencies and cost reductions are in the form of information availability across site/company, potentially improved vegetation establishment, less rework and efficient monitoring. Ultimately this contributes to safe, stable and sustainable rehabilitation. By capturing data on harvest, logistics, storage (including temperature and humidity), aggregation/blending, treatment, application and ongoing management, the native seed industry and end utilisers of native seed have a greater level of product integrity, brand integrity and information integrity.

The risk and consequences of community rejection and loss of a social licence to operate is well articulated (Moffat et al 2018), however, the means for systematically managing this risk are less established. At the local scale, a mining operation is said to have a social licence to operate (SLO) when it achieves ongoing acceptance or approval from the local community and other stakeholders who can affect its profitability (Graafland, 2002). Without this social acceptance, it is very difficult for a business to operate effectively or profitably. It is well understood that social (or community) acceptance of a mine and its associated operations is a reflection of the quality of the relationship a company has with their host community (Thomson & Boutilier, 2011; Lacey & Lamont, 2014; Parsons et al., 2014; Moffat et al., 2015). Community relations are an integral part of successful mining operations and where these interactions are effective, they tend to foster mutual understanding, trust and support between a company and the host community (Kemp et al., 2006; Holley & Mitcham, 2016). Research further demonstrates that where such interactions are perceived to be procedurally fair, the increased trust created in these company-community interactions tends to lead to higher levels of acceptance of mining operations (Moffat & Zhang, 2014; Lacey et al., 2017).The challenge, however, is how to listen systematically to communities that mining and associated operations; communities that are often located across vast geographic areas and with diverse demographics. To date, traditional methods deployed to both guide and evaluate community engagement and social investment activities have been challenged to reflect the nature of the phenomenon they seek to observe, the voice of community. For example, detailed baseline surveys of community attitudes every three years by companies, as is the requirement within the policy frameworks of most large miners, provide rich insights but do not reflect the dynamic, temporal nature of the relationships that underpins their SLO. These processes typically are largely opaque to communities and distinct from the company’s engagement activities. The CSIRO Local Voices project was developed with Rio Tinto to go some way towards meeting this challenge of how to listen to the voice of community systematically. Incidental to the progress of a geological survey of the Kalgoorlie goldfield during 1927 - 1928 a number of specimens of telluride minerals were obtained, chiefly with the help of Mr F G Brinsden, general manager of the South Kalgoorlie mine, and Mr Ernest Williams, general manager of the Boulder Perseverance mine. This collection was supplemented by a number of small specimens, including the rare copper telluride, which were collected and preserved from the Kalgoorlie mine by Mr A E Paton, and also by a few miscellaneous specimens from the collection of MrS F C Cook, of the Palace Hotel, Kalgoorlie.An extensive knowledge of the rare tellurium-bearing minerals was compiled during the last century from occurrences in Transylvania and Colorado. The recognition of different species has been based on chemical analyses and crystallographic measurements. In a few species there has been an absence of crystalline form, and these, together with the discoveries in this century of rickardite and 'weissite', muthmannite and empressite, have depended chiefly on the chemical analysis for identification. On the other hand, the crystalline form of nagyagite and stiitzite has been described in detail, while their precise chemical formulae were doubtfully defined.The announcement of the occurrence of tellurides at Kalgoorlie by A G Holroyd in the Kalgoorlie Mine on 29 May 1896, followed by their discovery in comparative abundance, stimulated the further study of these minerals. In this locality there is a general absence of well-formed crystals, and the knowledge gained has been confined to the record and description of previously known, but exceedingly rare, species.No new species has been recorded, but the intimate association of various species resulted in early description of two supposedly new species, kalgoorlite and coolgardite. These have been discredited since the investigation by L J Spencer in 1903, based on a collection of specimens donated to the British Museum.Spencer's list of species at Kalgoorlie comprises calaverite, sylvanite (or krennnerite), petzite, coloradoite, 'and altaite, and does not include hessite, previously mentioned by Krusch. In 1912 melonite and a copper telluride were added by J A Thomson and the presence of hessite confirmed. In 1912 there also appeared a full and detailed account by E S Simpson on behalf of the WA Geological Survey, which embraced his earlier notes on the tellurides, and which represents the state of our knowledge of the Kalgoorlie minerals, practically as far as can be attained without the use of the reflecting microscope.The position has been stationary for about 18 years, and it was thought. that the best use to which the present collection of tellurides could be devoted was an attempt by mineragraphic methods to study the mineral relationships, not only of the tellurides among themselves, but also to gold and other associated minerals. The precise mineral content and relationships become a factor of added importance with the development of flotation methods of treatment at Kalgoorlie.Moreover, the study would supplement the description of the ore deposits of the Boulder Belt that has recently been published.

International tenders for contract mining opportunities require the Contractor to make an assessment of risk for an operation with a life span of up to twenty-five years usually based on data made available by the Client. This paper seeks to address how the Contractor assesses the data and quantifies the risks associated with the project. The areas of risk are common to most projects, but in the--Lontractor's case, risk assessment is carried out on the Client's data base and within a compressed time frame of usually less than six months. Incorporation of that risk assessment into the contract documentation is also discussed. Practical examples are given in a number of areas.

Water management at a tailings storage facility (TSF) presents one of the major risks to the safe performance of the facility. International and domestic dam safety guidelines assess a dam’s hazard category based on the consequences of a dam failure and the subsequent downstream damage to the environment and communities.Often a rigorous risk assessment is undertaken during the design stages to identify and control hazards associated with water management through life-of-mine (LOM) phases. However, as experienced during the recent downturn in commodity prices, early closure of a mine can occur rapidly and unexpectedly. Many open cut mines extend to depths well below the natural water table level with constant dewatering required to maintain operations. When mining activities cease the groundwater starts to fill the void and pit lakes form. The resultant pit lake is directly connected to the surrounding water table and understanding the hydrological and chemical evolution of these lakes is important for minimising environmental impacts. In Western Australia alone there are currently 1800 mine voids and more than 150 mines operating below the water table (Johnson and Wright, 2003). In conjunction with BHP Billiton Iron Ore, CSIRO has been undertaking research to measure and model rates of evaporation from pit lakes in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. is placed in a waste rock dump, which is usually later reshaped to be erosionally stable, initiate and sustain vegetation and ultimately integrate with the surrounding undisturbed landscape. However, it is unclear how this exhumed material will weather and evolve for most sites. Also, there is a lack of data on the weathering of post-mining materials. If weathering is better understood, then there is the potential to improve rehabilitation outcomes. To improve predictions of the evolution of soil properties and weathering-limited erosion, estimating the rate at which fine, transportable material is produced from the weathering of larger, non-transportable particles and the resultant fragment size distribution and how that distribution evolves over time is necessary. This study examines the weathering process for four different coalmine waste rock materials for a Bowen Basin, Queensland site. Materials obtained from various areas of the coalmine were subjected to cyclic wetting and drying and heating and cooling. Particle size distribution and other material properties were explored after each experimental cycle to ascertain how the material changes during the experimental cycles. The particle size distribution data of wet and dry cycles were used as input data in a numerical weathering model to explore the dynamics of the weathering process for each material sample. A Monte Carlo framework was employed to assess the geometry of the weathering products, weathering rate and the number of daughter particles produced within a weathering cycle. Then the SSSPAM Landscape Evolution Model was used to evaluate the influence of weathering on erosion and landscape evolution of a post mining landform. SSSPAM simulations with: (i) active weathering and (ii) without weathering were run for each material. The erosion rate and the overall landform structure were then compared between weathering and non-weathering simulations.

The quantity of post-consumer ‘waste’ materials generated each year is rapidly increasing. These materials can contain significant quantities of critical metals and present an environmental challenge if landfilled. The ISACYCLE™ technology is a proven solution for the processing of these materials. In the ISACYCLE™ furnace, the post-consumer materials are processed to recover energy along with any contained critical metals, in the form of a base metal alloy or matte. In addition, a clean aggregate (slag) is generated, which has the potential to be used for a range of applications in the construction industry. This slag is commonly based on a fayalite slag but is modified to manage the complex feed. This paper will review the fayalite slag system and the theoretical modifications required for treating urban wastes. Slags from an ISACYCLE™ furnace processing urban wastes have been sampled and characterised. The chemistry of these samples will be reviewed and compared to the expected theoretical modifications required.

The development of novel technologies capable of real-time, high-accuracy, automated analysis of gold, other precious metals and mineralogy, both in ore samples and directly on process streams is reported.X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis is widely used for process stream monitoring of base metals. However, detection limits are generally a few parts-per-million (ppm) or larger, precluding the use of this method for monitoring precious metals. Complex interferences with other elements also limit accuracy. An XRF slurry analyser that uses advanced data-analysis techniques to resolve overlapping fluorescence lines, achieving detection limits in the parts-per-billion (ppb) range has been developed. This allows feed, concentrate and tailings streams in precious metal applications to be monitored in real-time. An extended trial of our technology in a platinum group element concentrator and laboratory tests on gold process slurries in the 0.1 - 2.0 ppm concentration range is discussed.Analysis of process stream mineralogy can provide useful information to supplement conventional elemental data. An on-stream X-ray diffraction analysis technique that provide real-time mineral and elemental measurement of process slurry streams has been developed. Both X-ray techniques can be combined into a single on-stream analyser to provide simultaneous elemental and mineralogical information. The successful trial of a combined XRDF (X-ray diffraction and fluorescence) slurry analyser is also reported.It is widely recognised that rapid, accurate analysis of grade is an essential prerequisite for optimising the efficiency of exploration, mining and processing of metals ores. The low grades of precious metals ores, such as gold and the platinum group elements, have led to fire assay becoming the predominant analysis technique. Significant drawbacks of fire assay include long turn-around times, limited absolute accuracy, high costs and requirement for skilled operating staff. For rapid measurement of gold samples, a technique that allows the gold content of large samples to be determined absolutely with high accuracy in less than two minutes using activation with high-energy X-rays has been developed. The method is non-destructive, has detection limits in the low ppb range, is capable of measuring slurries, ground or crushed solids with minimal preparation and can be made fully automatic.
