The discovery of the Nyidinghu Iron Ore Deposit totalling 2.46 Bt of resource continues FortescueÆs highly successful exploration record of discovering multi-billion tonne deposits under cover with little to no surface expression. Since inception in 2003 Fortescue have discovered and delineated the Christmas Creek and Cloudbreak deposits in the Chichester Range totalling 3.38 Bt and 3.25 Bt in the Solomon region. Together with other deposits Fortescues resource portfolio now approximates 10 Bt of hematite - goethite mineralisation.The Nyidinghu deposit is situated on the southern margin of the Fortescue Valley, 35 km south of FortescueÆs Cloudbreak mining operations on the north margin of the valley. Nyidinghu comprises approximately 70 per cent BID martite - goethite mineralisation hosted by the Brockman Iron Formation and 30 per cent CID beneath alluvial outwash of the Weeli Wolli Creek in to the Fortescue Valley. Minor DID mineralisation occurs at the deposit margins.BID mineralisation is strongly controlled by the pre-existing NE/SW trending Weeli Wolli Fault system and bounded to the north by the Poonda Fault. Both fault systems are interpreted to have had a long and complex history commencing pre Ophthalmian Orogeny (ca 2.2 Ga) and remaining intermittently active through the Proterozoic.CID at Nyidinghu is the downstream continuation of the combined Weeli Wolli/Marillana CID palaeochannel system being mined by Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton at Yandicoogina and Yandi, respectively.Exploration commenced in August 2010 with the inaugural resource announcement of 1 Bt being made just six months later. To date over 1700 RC and 85 diamond core holes have been drilled forming the basis for the resource of 2.46 Bt and ongoing feasibility studies. In addressing the need for non-degree tertiary training, let us examine some recent reviews of engineering and geoscience education. The Finniston Report (1) criticised the formation of engineers in the UK and stated that this was largely due to the narrow British conception of engineering as a branch of applied science which militates against an effective marriage between theory and application. It also criticised the system for not giving students sufficient grounding in the synthesis of technical, human and financial considerations within their undergraduate courses. As we all know, this report has led to the restructuring of engineering education in the UK. More recently, a Review of the Discipline of Engineering was carried out in Australia by a committee chaired by Professor Sir Bruce Williams (2). The report stated that: Australia has a fairly good system of engineering education that should be made better. more should be done to develop the communication skills of both staff and students. more attention should be paid to changes in engineering practice and the human element in technology. there is a serious shortage of state of the art equipment in most engineering schools. female enrolments in engineering courses should be increased from the current level of about 7% to 20% by 1997. employers should develop a better understanding of the need for continuing education. staff in engineering schools should develop closer relations with employers of engineers. higher education institutions with engineering schools should give financial and other inducements to staff to increase the proportion of study leave or professional development leave spent working as engineers in the business sector. there is considerable room for improvements in the teaching process and in the development of evaluation schemes for assessing the teaching contributions of staff. In its recent report to the Council of the Institution of Engineers, Australia, the Task Force on Engineering Education(3) makes the following points: managerial, entrepreneurial, professional and interpersonal skills should be introduced and integrated into the undergraduate courses but studied in depth as part of continuing education. the continuing education policy of the Institution should be promoted and strengthened with all engineers required to pursue continuing education. the Institution should develop a comprehensive guide to continuing education available from universities, colleges and other public and private sector organisations.

Steelmakers are increasingly motivated to use iron ore resources with a wider range of grades and mineral types that were previously considered unsuitable or uneconomical for sintering. In this respect, specific issues, which now require further investigation and understanding, include the sintering of ore types with:- overall higher gangue content- elements that cause problems in the steel manufacturing operations- distinctive sintering performance compared with traditional hematite-rich iron ores. Laboratory-based investigations of the sintering performance and the behaviour of gangue impurities during sintering is an important step towards the successful utilisation of these resources in steelmaking.In terms of laboratory-based sintering investigations, there are two generally accepted experimental scales utilised prior to undertaking industrial-scale trials, which include: bench-scale tablet (compact) testing and pilot-scale pot testing. The former has the advantages of flexibility and more precise control of sintering conditions; but it is difficult to simulate the heterogeneity of a sinter bed. The latter, which is carried out in pots with diameters between 150–500 mm, simulate the commercial sintering process and conditions quite well, but is time-consuming and labour-intensive due to operational complexity. It is therefore desirable to establish a smaller scale pot testing facility that avoids the disadvantages of the normal sintering pot but can provide comparable information.To explore the feasibility of small-scale pot testing, a ‘millipot’ facility was established to examine the sintering performance of iron ores and other non-traditional ferrous materials. The millipot has a diameter of 53 mm and height of 400 mm. The facility has the capability to monitor the sintering temperature at a number of locations (axial, radial) within the sinter bed and to adjust the suction (‘windbox’) pressure. The quality of iron ore fines have been deteriorating, which has affected sinter quality and productivity adversely. New pretreatment and sintering technologies are therefore required to tackle the gradual change in the quality of iron ore fines. In the sintering process, iron ore fines are first granulated with fluxes such as limestone and coke breeze, and are then loaded and fired in a sinter machine. Sinter productivity and quality are heavily influenced by the reactions occurring in the sintering bed. Hence fundamental understanding of these high temperature properties of ores is urgently needed.Formation of initial sinter melt, penetration and assimilation of nucleus particles by the initial melt, and consolidation and final solidification of final sinter melt are believed to be the key sintering reactions. The assimilation and penetration phenomena have been studied separately in the literature with model particles and diffusion couples and are therefore difficult to relate to sinter quality. In addition, the effect of ore mineralogy has not been studied in detail.In this study, tablets consisting of coarse particles from various iron ore fines as nucleus particles and chemical reagents as adhering fines were made and fired under various sintering conditions to investigate the penetration and assimilation behaviour simultaneously. The degree of assimilation, pore structure, compressive strength of the resultant analogue sinters were evaluated and the relationship between sinter strength and ore characteristics was further discussed. The nucleus particles from Ores A and B were found to be more porous and assimilated more readily with sinter melt, resulting in a viscous melt and a macro-porous sinter structure. The nucleus particles from Ores C and D on the other hand, assimilated less readily with sinter melt, resulting in a fluid melt and a denser sinter structure. This is consistent with the results reported in the literature, suggesting that the present evaluation method can be utilised for studying sintering reactions and predicting sinter quality.CITATION:Higuchi, T and Lu, L, 2017. The latest outcome of science is that aII bodies are composed of vibrating atoms or molecules. In almost all mineral bodies when changing from the gaseous or liquid condition to the solid, if the vibrating molecules are allowed free play, they arrange themselves in a symmetrical manner, and at a definite angle to each other: This angle varies with each system of crystallization. In a great many bodies this process may be brought about artificially, and the growth of the crystal watched. The most common method is to dissolve some substance in water or some other liquid, on slowly evaporating the liquid, the substance dissolved will solidify and the molecules will arrange themselves in their particular crystalline form.The element carbon crystallizes in two forms; as graphite in the form of a short six-sided prism', and in the diamond generally as the octohedron in the cubical system of crystallization. Orystalline bodies, as a rule, have plain faces but what is remarkable in the diamond is that in a great many cases the faces are rounded. Its great beauty as a gem when cut, and the high artificial value placed upon it by fashion, as well as its value as a cutting and boring instrument-it being the hardest body in nature-has caused many attempts to be made to form it artificially. These attempts have met with fair success as a scientific experiment, but as a commercial speculation they have been a complete failure. The most noted of these experIments was carried out by Mr. Hannay, of Glasgow.Paraffin spirit with lithium was submitted td prolonged heating in strong wrought-iron tubes securely welded. In most of the experiments the tubes exploded; but in a few cases the experiments were successful, and on cutting open the tubes small crystals of diamonds were found embedded in a black mass.Despretz produced minute diamonds under the influence of a powerful electric current from coal.

When the writer first saw the square-set timbering, he was at once impressed with the fact that the frames made by the sets, along the lode and across it, were composed of panels with rectangular openings, and it was puzzling to understand howsuch a collapsible construction could resist pressure that came unevenly on it. Later he learnt that the sets did not satisfactorily resist such pressure, but mullock filling had, to a great extent, to undertake this duty for them. So it appeared that the setswere practically an expensive scaffolding, enabling the miners to work in the face and carry the stope forward, till the filling was put in behind them to take the pressure of the roof and sides of the excavation. Of course some of the pressure is takenby the sets, but this is because "the set timbers prevent the filling being done perfectly; if it were practicable to remove the sets before filling, the filling by itself would more effectively support the back and wall, than do the combined sets andmullock. On the whole, therefore, the sets can hardly be said to be of much benefit where pressure has to be resisted. In pursuance of the investigation into the influence of various elements on the properties of lead during the past year, the effect of several elements on the creep rate of commercially pure lead has been investigated; a standard initial stress of 500 lb. per sq. in. having been adopted for comparison purposes. Other work which has been carried out indicates that the relative results of creep tests may be altered by varying the applied stress, but this aspect of the problem will need to await further investigations for itscomplete elucidation. The results obtained with dilute tellurium alloys are considered sufficiently interesting, and in some respects are so extraordinary, as to warrant publicatiorr at this stage.n must be realised however that, since the results obtained appear to be at variance with those said to have been obtained in practice and those previously published, the present investigation can only be considered as a contribution to our knowledge of the general problem.Consequently it is not considered advisable or necessary to offer detailed explanation of the results given. In fact, some features of the tests about to be described will need further investigation before an adequate explanation is possible.

The Gladstone Hill area hosts epithermal veins similar to those at Martha Hill, which is less than one kilometre away. There are several vein types in the Gladstone Hill area including (1) pyrite-marcasite, (2) quartz, (3) base metal sulfide, and (4) calcite. Pyrite veinlets formed first, whereas the quartz and carbonate veins formed later. The base metal sulfide vein occurs at depth and is predominantly comprised of quartz and chlorite intimately intergrown with pyrite, sphalerite, galena, and rare chalcopyrite. Platy calcite and massive calcite veinlets were the last vein types to form. Several vein textures occur in the Gladstone Hill area, including colloform and crustiform banding, lattice-bladed, zonal, comb, massive and feathery textures. Crustiform banded veins are the dominant texture and contain variable gold-silver grades. Colloform banded veins consist of ubiquitous quartz and minor chalcedony with gold grades as high as 60 g/t. The lattice-bladed texture forms from the deposition of calcite, which has been replaced in many samples by quartz, indicating that boiling and later cooling has taken place. Unreplaced platy calcite only occurs at deeper levels (>300 m). Zonal and comb textures are preserved in quartz and late-stage amethyst veins. Feathery textures within quartz are commonly associated with breccias and some colloform banding, and with significant Au-Ag grades.   The homogenisation temperatures (Th) of primary and secondary inclusions in quartz, amethyst and platy calcite range from 166 to 274¦C, with salinities <1.3 wt% NaCI equiv. The presence of vapor-dominated inclusions and primary fluid inclusions in platy calcite suggests that boiling occurred intermittently throughout deposition. The veins formed under a relatively flat lying paleowater table that occurred 280 - 300 m above sea level. The fluids involved in vein formation were alkali chloride in composition and low in CO2.

In the course of an integrated airborne survey in 1975, a uranium-molybdenum deposit was discovered by Minatome Australia Pty Limited in North Queensland, Australia, approximately 70 km by road west of Townsville.The mineralization occurs in a welded tuff unit within the Carboniferous St James Vokanics. It is structurally controlled by a complex of subvertical east-west fractures and is exposed over a strike length of 350 m. Drilling has traced a further 150 m extension underneath a barren capping consisting of a thick pile of vokano-sediments. The maximum width of the orebody is 150 m, and its vertical thickness is approximately 100 m.The primary ore minerals are coffinite, pitchblende and molybdenite, accompanied by various alteration products (particularly uranium molybdates).The vein-type mineralization is considered epigenetic.A comprehensive program of surface drilling and underground exploration is in progress to establish the uranium and molybdenum reserves.

Mineral exploration and mining in New Zealand has had almost five years of new legislation. The requirement for different consents is a challenging, time consuming, expensive exercise but in most cases the new procedure is working, although the matter of obtaining access to land is still a major issue. Priority is critical. After lodgment of an application for a minerals permit there are many other matters to address such as identifying land owners, occupiers and administrators, preparation of access applications, consultation and preparation of various resource consent applications.

With the exhaustion of orebodies close to the main haulage shaft of the Emperor mine, an increased rate of development, aimed at earlier investigation of values disclosed by exploration drill holes has been attained with an overall reduction in unit costs.This paper describes the techniques used in rates of advance up to and exceeding 1,000 ft per 28-day period.

Thermodynamic properties of the solutions of hydrogen in metals and carbon in austenite were investigated and it is possible to predict the interstitial solubility in these systems over relatively wide ranges of temperature and solute activity. Monte Carlo methods were used to compute the arrangements of interstitial atoms on the tetrahedral sites in body centred cubic metals and the octahedral sites in face centred cubic metals. It was shown that the non-configurational entropies of solution of hydrogen in metals can be interpreted as being principally vibrational and on this basis the potential value of the isotopic solubility ratio theory in indicating the compositional variation of these non-configurational entropies was discussed. The need for future work along these lines is pointed out.

The Golden Cross low sulfidation epithermal deposit produced approximately 750,000 ounces of Au from two ore zones: the underground Empire Vein System and the open pit stockwork. The Empire Vein System has at least eight stages of vein formation: (1) sulfide veins, (2) black veins, (3) massive veins, (4) banded veins, (5) thin white veins, (6) crumbly veins, (7) massive/platy calcite veins, and (8) flattened rhomb calcite veins. Gold mineralisation occurred relatively early in the lifetime of the system, dominantly during 2 through 4. The late calcite veins (7 and 8) and early sulfide veins (1) are barren. The vein system formed in a dominantly extensional environment, though some compressional faulting may have also existed during vein formation. There is no evidence for significant strike-slip faulting during vein formation, highlighting the fact that explorationists should pursue on-site structural patterns rather than fashionable models.

Perhaps one of the most important conferences or symposia which our Institute has conducted, was the joint Aus. LM.M./AJ.M.E. meeting held in Canberra in May 1978, with the theme International Resource Management (Woodcock, 1978).We were privileged to witness active participation in the meeting by outstanding personalities from the mining and metallurgical industries of Australia and New Zealand, the United States of America, Canada and the United Kingdom and to hear addresses on subjects of international significance to the mining and metallurgical industries.Our Institute is one concerned with professionalism.The principal objects of The Institute as described by our founders include, "promoting the arts and sciences connected with the economical production of the useful minerals and metals, and the welfare of those in the industries, by meetings for social intercourse, and the reading and discussion of professional papers, and to circulate by means of publications amongst its members and associates, the information thus obtained".Sir Maurice Mawby (1968) said in his Presidential Address to the Institite, "the most important aspect of these objects was the promotion of the arts and sciences of the mining industry".Why is it then, that a large proportion of the papers given at the meeting in Canberra dealt with world wide social aspects of the mining and metallurgical industries, rather than the technology, the arts and sciences of mining and metallurgy as principal factors in international resource management?The answer is quite simple of course, and that is that the social and political factors are the principal factors which create the demand for basic raw materials and in the long term determine the costs and prices of the commodities which our professional abilities are drawn upon to produce.

THE following brief paper is submitted with a view to encouraging the exploitation of hitherto neglected 10w~ grade ore-bodies which are suitable for extraction by open-cut methods.The Corinthian North mine, situated 10 miles from Southern Cross, in the Yilgarn district of Western Australia, furnishes an example of low working costs, although operations are carried out on quite a limited scale.The body of quartz which is now being worked strikes N.W. and S.E., has a very slight underlie to the west, and lies between bodies of quartz-hrematite s,chist on the east and amphibolite on the west.So far as the property has been explored, it would appear that the underlying sulphide rises to within about 70 ft. of the surface in the northern end of the workings, and pitches away to the south at a grade...

Variations in delay timing can have a marked influence on blasting effectiveness and, hence, on total production costs. In single-row bench blasts, delay firing is invariably more effective than simultaneous initiation. In single-row delayed blasts, there is an optimum inter-hole delay above and below which inferior blasting results are obtained. This optimum delay is equal to the time required for each charge to just effectively detach its quota of the burden. The inter-hole delay should seldom be less than 4 ms.m-l of burden.In multi-row blasts in which holes in a given effective row are fired on the same delay, the entire burden on any effective row should be detached from the rock mass just before charges in the next effeotive row detonate. Delays shorter than this give inferior blasting results and an increased likelihood of environmental and slope stability problems. If the inter-row delay is too long, cut-offs can occur, especially where the delay unit is located outside the blasthole. For a surface delay system, the optimum inter-row delay usually varies between 4 ms.m-l and 8 ms.m-l of effective burden. The number of rows that can be fired effectively with surface delay systems (in a single blast) is limited by the threat of cut-offs. Greater interrow delays and a larger number of rows per blast can be fired to advantage with down-the-hole delay systems.There are practical limits to the timing accuracy of all available delay systems. The existence of delay time variability should be recognized and duly considered in the design of blasts.The relationship between delay timing and blasting vibrations is not discussed.

The emission of seam gases into underground workings in coal mines is acknowledged as a major hazard, particularly methane due to its possible ignition. Acknowledge of seam gas parameters is important for the prediction of gas emission rates into the ventilating air current. They are also important as the basis for the evaluation of the likely contained gas as a possible energy source.   Gas content determinations for the Kupakupa seam have been made at the Huntly West Mine.  Applying the method of Creedy (1986) to face samples, gas contents of 1.80 and 1.66 have been determined. Using desorbed and residual gas content data a content of 1.92 m3/t has been derived. These are on an ash included basis. Calculations using the adsorption equation of Kim (1977) and coal quality have given a gas content of 2.19 m3 t. Long-hole exploration drilling at Huntly West Mine has provided information on gas pressure. A pressure rise test has given a reading of 500 kPa (absolute); this is low compared with the pressure given for the determined gas content from theoretical adsorption isotherms.

The following brief paper is intended, to apply to the concentration of the silver-lead ores at Broken Hill, New South Wales, generally, but more particularly to the process as applied to the ores in the Block 10 mine. The attached plans are similar inmany respects to those prepared, recently for the Block 10 company.Most of the information here given is already well known to those members who are conversant with the concentration practices of this field, but it is the writer's object to give just a few of those figures which he found difficult to obtain when first engaging in practical work. At that time no text-books were at hand from which it was possible to get sufficient details for practical working purposes.It is first supposed that the mine has been thoroughly explored and has been found to contain a lbde sufficient in size ·and quality to warrant the erection of a concentrating plant. The points then to determine are:-(1.) The quantity and cost of water available for steam-making and ore-dressing purposes.(2.) The most convenient site for the mill.

At an early stage of the examination of most prospects, samples are taken; and the sample values obtained play an important part in determining the subsequent history of the prospect. It is, therefore, important that. eveJJy effort should be made to interpret asfully as possible the meaning of the observed results. In this connection, it is suggested that examination of the assay values of mine samples by simple statistical methods may bring to light information of considerable value, which might otherwise be missed.Although expert statisticians may derive more information from the available data, those who are, like the writer, less proficient mathematically, may also benefit by applying quite simple statistical methods. At least they will develop a useful habit of thought bywhich they become aware at all times that sampling results only provide estimates of the truth, but that an assessment of the precision of such results may be possible. The object of this paper is to provide some evidence of. the truth of these statements, by theuse of a few very elementary statistical calculations.General.The idea that any mine sample is subject to error from a variety of causes is a very familiar one. Doubt always exists with regard to the representativeness of a perfectly cut sample, and other errors may arise through imperfections of sample cutting, crushing, splitting and assaying. Some causes of error may give rise to "constant" errors, others may cause variable but one-sided "systematic" errors, and others again may bring about variable results without any tendency toward bias on the average. In statistical language, mine sample values are subject to errors which may have either assignable causes or chance causes. The former are those which can be isolated, or should be capable of isolation, while the latter are those remaining when all assignable causes have been removed. A single constant assignable cause brings about bias in all results, and one or more than one variable assignable cause brings about variation between individual results and perhaps an overall bias. The system of chance causes that would remain if all assignable causes were removed would cause variation between individual results but no overall bias. There is no sharp practical line of distinction between the two types of cause) of error; nor is it ever possible by any method of statistical analysis to be certain that there are no assign...

Lignite deposits of Central Otago Miocene Dunstan Formation accumulated on a broad alluvial plain and on deltas that flanked a large freshwater lake. The regional subsurface distribution and configuration of the lignite-bearing strata are identified within the context of depositional systems and placed into a genetically defined stratigraphic framework. The stratigraphic and depositional models constructed, should form an integral part of the geological assessment process to guide future regional or mine based lignite drilling programmes. Further testing and evaluation of the commercialy important lignite deposits in the Blackstone and Roxburgh Coalfields are required to adequately characterise the lignites and their geological setting, particularly to select methods of mining and wise uses of the lignite.
