Base metal sulphide mineralisation on the northern end of Great Barrier Island is spatially associated with hypabyssal intermediate to acidic intrusives, in transgressive structures in indurated, complexly deformed greywackes and argillites. Copper predominates in the mineralisation, with minor accompanying lead and zinc and also some gold and silver. However, in some cases lead or zinc may be the dominant constituent. The mineralisation is generally characterised by only narrow envelopes of weak alteration (propyliticassemblages dominated by chlorite and epidote) and with only minor amounts of quartz accompanying the sulphides, which form a cement in zones of hydraulic fracturing. There are two distinct structural settings to the mineralisation: at MinerÆs Head, in a structurally complex situation in a shell-like zone of crackling in hornfelsed greywacke, in association with both north- and east-striking fractures and rubble breccias associated with the apical part of a large intrusive; and in very narrow, but very strike-persistent, 1inear steeply-dipping fracture zones, exposed on the north coast and inland areas near Tataweka.

Legislation introduced for Queensland and New South Wales Coal mines provides different levels of prescription regarding specification of mine seals û generally in relation to capacity to withstand overpressure. In Queensland, the Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation (2001), Section 341 (d) places a further onus on the statutory ventilation officer to æensure all ventilation control devices at the mine are properly constructed and maintainedÆ and that the ventilation officer æmust ensure a ventilation control device mentioned in the regulation à and installed at the mine meets the design criteria statedÆ for the ætype of deviceÆ. Based on the experience of the author, it appears that risk management and life cycle approach to seals has not been adopted to the same extent as for other aspects of operations. Further, because of the number of disciplines and personnel involved that may influence various factors affecting seal integrity, the opportunity for oversight or unclear allocation of responsibility is considerable. While suppliers can provide explosion or design rated seals, this should only be a starting point for application of the product in a coal mine. Application is often considered by mine planning staff (taking into consideration mine environment parameters such as water, control of gas, spontaneous combustion risk, etc) in conjunction with the colliery ventilation officer, and then construction completed by contractors under supervision of operational staff. After construction, seals often are managed by operational personnel with input from the ventilation officer. Input of the geotechnical engineer into pillar design, roadway opening size, ground support specification and most stable seal location is also required. The need for a customised design approach for each seal site is proposed in order to take into account the many and variable factors that may influence a site so that improved seal performance reliability and predictability can be developed. A program of quantitative as well as qualitative monitoring of performance and triggers for rectification or maintenance action is required, and would provide support to the aforementioned proposal. Many mines rely on visual/audible inspection and periodic bag sampling as the primary means of assessment. Other significant factors such as seal material properties, rib degradation, convergence, floor heave, effects of water on both structural integrity of the seal as well as the air tightness of the seal do not generally receive the same level of attention. Based on the above observations, the author has compiled a reference checklist in regard to the above matters, including aspects of and approaches to mine and pillar design, geotechnical modelling and data collection, civil engineering design, site evaluation and practical options available.

The fundamental features of the Cable Belt Conveyor are described. It consists of independent wire ropes which take the transmission load, and a special reinforced rubber belt which acts 'only as carrier of material. The first cable belt installation in Scotland is described briefly.A general description of this type of conveyor is followed by details of the rubber belt construction and the method of joining sections of belt. The drive unit, the tensioning arrangements and the power requirements are outlined.Applications of the cable belt conveyor are 'dealt with and its advantages summarized.INTRODUCTIONThe cable belt conveyor, as its name implies is a conveyor composed of steel wire ropes and a rubber belt, in which the ropes serve as transmission members, and the belt merely as a carrier of materials.Over the years it has been the ambition of engineers connected with the belt conveyor industry to develop a conveyor that would use the high tensile strength of wire ropes to transmit the stresses involved in the driving of large capacity belt conveyors. Different lines of approach have been adopted in the United States of America and in Britain. In the United States the method adopted was to introduce a large number of flexible steel cables into the rubber belt itself, in the form of a closely packed layer arranged across the full width of the belt. These small cables are packed in a nylon filled duck envelope which is incorporated in the rubber belt. This is commonly known as the steel corded conveyor belt. A new low-dilution fusion method which has been successfully used for accurate determination of the major oxide components of silicate rocks, is applicable to rapid, accurate determination of trace or minor eiements in mineral exploration samples. Limit of detection is in many cases less than 5 ppm. Either rapid, approximate measurement and calculation methods (suitable for geochemical exploration), or more accurate methods (applicable to orebody evaluation studies) may be used.Rapid methods are described for nickel in rocks and sulphides containing 10 ppm to >2 per cent Ni, and for gallium. The rarely-determined element gallium is an example of a constituent which may be easily investigatedby XRF using the LiB02 fusion disc, which is a permanent, easily-stored analytical sample available for later rapid or accurate analyses. The method is applicable to over 30 elements at levels encountered in mineral exploration.

Geophysical surveys are currently being carried out over mineral prospects all around the Pacific Rim. Many of these surveys are successful in locating mineralisation in porphyry intrusives, mesothermal environments, and epithermal vein systems. A number of examples of surveys in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea are presented, which show the successful application of various geophysical techniques to the discovery of mineral deposits on the Pacific Rim.

Improvements in mechanisation should not be considered independently of safety and of environmental hazards. The need to keep gas contents within statutory limits may make the time needed to partially drain a gassy seam the effective control on face development times. Dust levels may provide an effective control on coal extraction rates on any one face. The combination of gas and dust on high output longwall faces may make it necessary for each one to be treated as a separate mine in terms of ventilation, and the faceworkers may need special protection. Mechanisation and safety can be mutually beneficial when mechanisation combined with systematic safety assessment reduces accidents, and when a thorough study of how to reduce accidents and health risks indicates the best method to improve mechanisation.

The key to the successful debt funding of a new mining project, whether in economically established or developing nations, is the submission of a comprehensive feasibility study. The feasibility study forms the basis from which the resource banker can construct financial models which govern the amount of available funds, the conditions which control the supply of such funds and the time period over which the loan may be repaid. The bank will wish to ensure that the feasibility study is the best representation and confirmation of reality possible because this model is the basis of the loan security package. Thus the study will be vigorously interrogated by independent experts in all its elements including the ore reserve, mineability, metallurgy, operating and capital cost profile, environmental factors and management.

Good roads are essential in moving men and materials to and from the underground workplace. Coffey Partners International Pty Ltd (Coffey) has recently completed a underground coal industry funded project on underground mine road construction and maintenance. This paper discusses practical approaches to construction and maintenance of underground mine roads using transferrable civil technologies and innovative techniques. Mine pavements are generally low-cost (relative to civil roads), constructed to varying standards using locally available materials to best meet the mobility needs of the mine. Performance of pavements is thus largely dependent on the environmental conditions, quality of the available road making materials, maintenance policies and available resources. The paper will detail `what causes bad roads?' in various underground environments, available management strategies, construction and water control techniques, road maintenance and vehicle considerations.

The Tertiary gold deposits of the Hauraki area are predominantly epithermal vein types containing mineral assemblages of quartz, calcite, pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, acanthite and native gold (electrum). Sulphosalt, telluride (eg hessite), seleniferous sulphide and selenide minerals are important locally. Studies of wall rock alteration mineralogy, fluid inclusions in gangue minerals, and sulphur isotopes of sulphide minerals indicate that the ore forming fluids had the following parameters: pH, near neutral at depth but acidic near surface; temperature, predominantly 320 - 270¦C for base metal dominated assemblages, 280 - 200¦C for precious metal dominated assemblages and generally below 200¦C for late stage barite; apparent salinity, six to zero equivalent weight per cent NaCl; and CO2 concentration, generally around one mole per cent CO2. There is fluid inclusion evidence for boiling during mineralisation in some deposits. Moderate values off S2 and FO2 are indicated for base metal and mixed base metal û precious metal assemblages of most deposits by the predominance of pyrite + chalcopyrite over other iron-bearing phases; primary bornite is absent, whereas pyrrhotite, hematite and magnetite rarely occur in the veins. The largest gold û silver deposits formed from solutions in which the sulphur species in solution were predominantly reduced. Near surface environments and some deep, predominantly base metal, deposits were formed from solutions with approximately equal concentrations of oxidised and reduced sulphur species.

The paper discusses assay methods generally used when prospecting for gold, and also the applicability of various chemical methods, it describes a new paper chromatographic technique.for making fairly rapid semi-quantitative assays for very fine gold. Testing of the method in field work shows that this simple method could have applications in geologic work, in prospecting and in certain routine mine sampling work. It is not yet a method that can be used to detect anomalies in traces of gold dispersed around an orebody, as is general practice in geochemical prospecting.INTRODUCTIONAccording to the English economist Harrod (1958), "the acute shortage of gold in the world-because currency value has not been adjusted in line with the fall in the goods value of the various currencies-has been a familiar fact for some time now". Harrod calculates that a rise in the price of gold to double its present value is necessary to rectify this condition, and that, if this rise were to take place, increase in production and reduction in private hoarding might well bring annual accretion to world stocks from the presentaverage of about $464 million to a figure close to the $2,000 million that would probably eiiminate these shortages.Any increase in the price of gold is bound to lead to a great increase in prospecting at working mines, in abandoned areas and possibly in untouched country. Prospecting, techniques for base metal orebodies have improved greatly in the last thirty years; but methods available to detect gold occurring without accessory metals have not received the same attention. A device is described which is suitable for the automatic sampling of dust in dust laden flue gases. This device, called a Venturi Sampler, consists of two pipes each fitted with a suitably designed venturi.Both pipes are placed in the flue where one acts as an open-ended reference tube and the other as the actual sampling tube.The gas sampling rate is automatically controlled so as to maintain a zero differential pressure between pressure tappings in the two venturi throats. The venturies are so designed that under these conditions the gas velocity in the sampling pipe is always equal to the free gas velocity in the flue-that is isokinetfc sampling conditions are maintained.INTRODUCTIONThere is a constant need in industry for regular and accurate assessments of dust losses, both to assist in improving operating efficiencies in order to minimize losses, and to obtain accurate metallurgical balances. In many cases where sampling is carried out in dust laden gases, the existing sampling methods are both laborious and inaccurate, and often make no provision for changes in flue gas velocity while sampling is in progress.In the majority of cases where a measurement of dust losses in a stack or flue is required, a preliminary velocity survey is made with a pitot tube to establish the gas velocity at each of the points at which samples are to be taken. The sample of gas (and dust) is withdrawn through a tube connected via a flowmeter to an exhausting apparatus. Some means of removing the dust from the gas sample is placed in circuit ahead of the exhausting apparatus. Cross-belt samplers are designed to sample particulate material in processing plants, usually when there is no space to install a conventional linear falling stream sampler. Most of the available cross-belt samplers are mounted on the top of conveyor belts, and remove each increment from a loaded moving conveyor with a 360° rotation of an open faced cutter, in a plane perpendicular to the material flow. Despite the practicality of this equipment and the fact that it occupies very little space in the plant, cross-belt samplers are well known for collecting biased samples, especially due to the increment extraction error. Sampling consultants around the world tend to condemn this sampling equipment, claiming that it is incapable of collecting the fine material from the bottom part of the load, and, since the sampling probability is not uniform for all fragments and depends on its position in the stream, this kind of sampler generates biased samples and its use should be avoided. Furthermore, the greater the segregation effect between particles, the larger the bias. However, some plants, whose initial design did not plan for the installation of a falling stream sampler, must rely on cross-belt samples for process control and reconciliation. For the past years, sampling equipment manufacturers have been putting effort in modifying the cross-belt sampler design in order to comply with the principles of correct sampling. Changes to the cutter material, shape, position, speed and movement in relation to the material flow have been made, and are continually being tested for different types of ore with various chemical and physical characteristics. It is generally recognised that slags are active participants in pyrometallurgical processes, and not merely inert liquids which must be produced. to effect separation of gangue material in smelting, or of impurities in refining. The importance attached to slag-metal reactions in steelmaking is shown by the numerous investigations in this field. However, there are still many important reactions of slags which require explanation. In this paper some new aspects of the reactions of slags will be discussed, as far as possible quantitatively.FREE AND COMBINED OXIDESMetallurgical experience indicates that variations in the composition of slags produce changes in the chemical behaviour of the various components. In preparing this paper, the writer hopes to achieve two main objects. Firstly, an indication of the desirable features of coke from the viewpoint of a blast furnace operator should be of assistance and value to those connected with coal and coke research, coal mining, the manufacture of coke and the production of iron. Secondly, it is hoped that the conclusions and opinions expressed herein, which are known to be of a controversial nature, will promote some discussion and thought. In this way, other workers may see fit to contribute and enlarge our general knowledge of Australian coke and its behaviour in blast furnaces.Those properties of coke that are considered to be of importance to blast furnace operation will be examined. Although broadly speaking, the composition and characteristics of coke are inherent in the coals used, any special features of coal preparation and carbonization that affect the resultant coke will be discussed. An attempt will also be made to indicate the effect on blast furnace operation of significant irregularities in these properties.THE FUNCTION OF COKE IN A BLAST FURNACECoke has four important functions in a blast furnace:1. To reduce the oxides of iron and other elements to metal and to provide the carbon absorbed by the iron.2. To supply the necessary heat for the process.3. To provide an open supporting structure in which the descending ore and limestone lie exposed to the action of the ascending gas.4. The sulphides can be arranged in a series determined by the relative amounts of ionic and covalent bonding present. This series is similar to the paragenetic series common to most sulphide ore deposits. Investigation of the surface tensions of the corresponding heavy metal iodides by the maximum bubble pressure method throws some light upon this relationship. It is shown that the surface tension of molten iodides decreases as the chemical bonding within them becomes more covalent. These results are interpreted in terms of the constitution of the melts, and are extended to cover the case of sulphides in solution in a silicate melt. It is concluded that sulphides tend to lower the surface tension of silicate melts and that this tendency becomes greater as the bonding within the dissolved sulphide groups becomes more covalent. A possible relationship between this conclusion and the origin of paragenesis in sulphide ore deposits is indicated.INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that the order of deposition, or paragenesis of sulphide minerals is remarkably similar in hypogene ore deposits throughout the world. This widespread similarity points towards the operation of some fundamental process which must be intimately connected with -the genesis of these ores. A correct interpretation and understanding of the causes of paragenesis in sulphide ore deposits would shed much light on the origin of these deposits.In Table 1 a simplified paragenetic series for sulphide minerals is presented. The quartz-cassiterite-wolfram veins at the Aberfoyle Tin Mine, north-eastern Tasmania, form a sheeted zone about 200 ft. wide and 1,600 ft. long in slightly contact metamorphosed shales, slates and greywackes, and are associated with a cupola of aplitic granite whose top is about 1,050 ft. below the present surface. Economic mineralization persists from the surface down to a vertical depth of 1,050 ft. to 1,100 ft., dying away in the vicinity of the cupola. Down to the 9-level there is a progressive increase in wolfram content of the veins, and a decline in cassiterite content, with increasing depth.The veins are banded or zoned, with a seivedge of muscovite on the wall. Cassiterite, wolfram and sphalerite occur inside the selvedges, projecting into a core of quartz of varying width. Other sulphides form the central part of some narrow veins, or occur as clots in the quartz. The general sequence of deposition of the ore minerals was: (1) cassiterite, wolfram; (2) arsenopyrite, pyrite, molybdenite; (3) pyrrhotite (in part); (4) blende-group minerals-chalcopyrite, sphalerite, stannite, pyrrhotite (in part)-as solid solutions; (5) galena, tetrahedrite, matildite, native bismuth, scheelite; (6) marcasite and secondary pyrite, magnetite and hematite. The sequence of deposition of the gangue minerals was: (1) fluorine-bearing minerals-muscovite topaz, apatite, triplite, fluorite-more or less contemporaneous with the cassiterite and wolfram;' (2) quartz-contemporaneous with the earlier sulphides; (3) carbonates--contemporaneous with the later sulphides. The stages overlapped somewhat.The composition of the sphalerite and heat treatment experiments with the solid solutions indicate that the blende-group sulphides were deposited at about 6000 C., and cooled rapidly, so that unmixing of the solid solutions was arrested. This accords with the likelihood that the country rock temperature was not above 2000 C. Annealing experiments at between 3500 C. and 6000 C. led to further precipitation from solid solution at the lower temperatures, and to significant segregation by solid diffusion within, a week, indicating that both deposition and cooling of the ore were rapid processes-completed in a matter of days. A hard lump char containing only 4 to 5 per cent ash, 0·25-0·30 per cent sulphur and a trace of phosphorus has been produced from Latrobe Valley brown coal by slow drying and carbonization of ordinary industrial briquettes at temperatures between 7000 C and 14000 C. The briquette char can be made with a variety of reactivities by varying the maximum temperature of carbonization; the higher the temperature, the lower the reactivity. The strength of the fuel compares favourably with metallurgical coke made from black coal, though it may not be quite so resistant to abrasion. Experiments in a small experimental cupola indicate that it will make a satisfactory fuel for use in iron foundries. It may also find extensive application as a smokeless fuel in other branches of industry and in household heating appliances.INTRODUCTIONVictoria, like South Australia and Western Australia, is apparently without 'significant deposits of black coal of coking quality but there are huge reserves of brown coal of high moisture content (60-66 per cent) in the Latrobe Valley (well over 20,000 million tons have been proved) and there are other important deposits in the south central portion of the State (Herman, 1952).For three decades Victorian industries, including a few metallurgical firms, have been using the briquettes made at the Yallourn factory of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (S.E.C.). These briquettes, having a moisture content of about 15 per cent and a calorific value of approximately 9,500 B.T.U. per pound, are satisfactory for certain grate-type furnaces but they are not suitable for use in cupolas of other shaft furnaces because they disintegrate badly on rapid heating.

This paper is based on a case study from a mine site that operates two gyratory primary crushers. These crushers were encountering problems, which included inconsistent P80, reduced liner life tonnage and, on some occasions, catastrophic failure of the liners.As part of an evaluation process, both crushers were ‘mapped’ using a technology for condition monitoring and modelling of the crusher’s wear components. The technology provides comprehensive coverage of the crusher’s concaves and mantle at 100 mm intervals. It also automatically assesses wear rate between inspections and determines the highest wear areas. Outcomes include projected optimum reline dates at target replacement thicknesses, the identification of asymmetrical wear patterns, and the accurate measurement of open and closed (OSS/CSS) side settings.A comprehensive study was performed to optimise the performance of both these crushers at site. Over a period of seven liner service lives, the strategies to improved performance included liner analysis (concaves and mantle profile analysis), tonnes per day (t/d) and tonnes per hour (t/h) analysis, mantle reutilisation, detection and control of loose concaves, and detection and control of uneven wear and hot spots.These strategies resulted in the improved mechanical and operational performance of both crushers through concave and mantle redesign, OSS/CSS control, accurate wear forecasting plus other initiatives.As a result of these initiatives, the site now experiences benefits which include consistent product size, increased tonnes per hour (t/h) for both crushers and the liner life tonnage has doubled. Perhaps one of the most important conferences or symposia which our Institute has conducted, was the joint Aus. LM.M./AJ.M.E. meeting held in Canberra in May 1978, with the theme International Resource Management (Woodcock, 1978).We were privileged to witness active participation in the meeting by outstanding personalities from the mining and metallurgical industries of Australia and New Zealand, the United States of America, Canada and the United Kingdom and to hear addresses on subjects of international significance to the mining and metallurgical industries.Our Institute is one concerned with professionalism.The principal objects of The Institute as described by our founders include, "promoting the arts and sciences connected with the economical production of the useful minerals and metals, and the welfare of those in the industries, by meetings for social intercourse, and the reading and discussion of professional papers, and to circulate by means of publications amongst its members and associates, the information thus obtained".Sir Maurice Mawby (1968) said in his Presidential Address to the Institite, "the most important aspect of these objects was the promotion of the arts and sciences of the mining industry".Why is it then, that a large proportion of the papers given at the meeting in Canberra dealt with world wide social aspects of the mining and metallurgical industries, rather than the technology, the arts and sciences of mining and metallurgy as principal factors in international resource management?The answer is quite simple of course, and that is that the social and political factors are the principal factors which create the demand for basic raw materials and in the long term determine the costs and prices of the commodities which our professional abilities are drawn upon to produce.
