Variograms can be powerful tools for the analysis and control of process streams and their sampling. Their uses and proper utilisation have been described somewhat unclearly to date, and their limitations and precautions of use are too rarely mentioned. The general meaning and properties of the variogram tool and its use in geostatistics are therefore reviewed in details to derive a critical view of its proper use for process control: what to expect from it and what it cannot deliver and which uses are illusory or potentially misleading. As cities become more populated and the need for tunnelling increases, we continue to dig deeper urban tunnels in more challenging ground conditions. At the same time our expectations for durability and long-term performance are increasing.It has become increasingly apparent in recent years that repairing water leaks in tunnels can be very costly and unplanned infiltration can cause undesirable outcomes for long-term maintenance costs, structural durability and environmental impacts. For this reason, tunnel constructors are investing more time and effort upfront into drainage and waterproofing systems.Tunnel membrane systems are becoming accepted as a necessary part of tunnel construction, however the knowledge surrounding selection of appropriate systems, design detailing and installation methods has not increased at the same rate. Currently Australia relies heavily on International Standards from Europe and the United States with no immediate program in place to establish our own locally relevant industry standards.This paper gives an overview of where the industry in Australasia is heading in terms of adopting relevant standards. Current basic waterproof detailing options for drained and undrained tunnels with success and failure of various methods are also addressed. Finally we look at the Brisbane Airport Link as a case study for how tunnel waterproofing contract methods, design and installation issues are being addressed in context with recent projects including the Epping to Chatswood Rail Link in Sydney, Auckland Northern Gateway Tunnel, Eastlink Tunnel in Melbourne and Sydney City West Cable Tunnel.This paper’s primary objective is to propose guidelines for how tunnel waterproofing could be implemented on large infrastructure projects in the future and to map a path for preparing and introducing a ready to use document for selecting appropriate tunnel membrane and drainage systems whilst implementing detailing methods which are appropriate for local conditions.

The Snap Lake Phase I project initiated a subsampling campaign on the material (kimberlite/metavolcanic/granite) mined and treated for diamonds. The campaign was aimed at determining the optimum subsampling program to subsample the feed to the bulk sample plant (BSP) for the duration of a sampling campaign. This paper describes the application of GyÆs formula for determining the subsample size and other good sampling practices to determine this subsampling campaign. Three main issues are discussed: the use of a hammer sampler to sample off a moving conveyor and the practical experiment to determine the optimum subsampling program; bias introduced by laboratory equipment including two sizes rotary splitters; and variability of the feed material to the BSP over time.

Continuous improvement in environmental management assists in the achievement of sustainability goals for the processing of minerals. The use of regular internal environmental audits (scored or unscored) which form an integral component of an Environmental Management System (EMS), provide demonstrable evidence of this improvement. Case studies are presented for a number of major coal mines in the Hunter Valley, where regular internal environmental audits have been undertaken every two to three months, over periods varying from 18 months to five years. Examples of the benefits of improved environmental performance (driven by the audit process) to sustainable development are provided.The auditing process as described here for coal mines, and coal handling and preparation plants, is equally applicable to the processing of other mineral ores, metalliferous mines, quarries, and oil and gas projects.

When a thin film of volatile matter is deposited under vacuum on a polished coal surface, and the coated surface is examined microscopically in plane-polarized reflected light, colour changes are observed which are characteristic of the various macerals present. The colour changes appear to be mainly due to interference between light reflected at the upper surface of the film and at the film!coal interface. A variety of source materials for the volatile matter required have been tested, including powdered bituminous coal, coal tars, boron oxide, and certain resins. Bituminous coal gave the best results.

Mechanical flotation machine design is typically based on hydrodynamic analysis, with scale-up calculated by geometric proportionality. End users often specify and purchase machines on the basis of retention time, characterised by the æ$/m3Æ approach; they may also consider the manufacturerÆs installed base. In some applications, end users also consider specific energy and the impact of energy consumption on operational costs. In other cases, a decision may be based on machine type (forced-air versus self-aspirating) and perceived metallurgical or operational advantages of one machine type over the other. With regard to metallurgical performance efficient bubble-particle contact is very important and is primarily influenced by two factors:the concentration and size distribution of bubbles in the machineÆs contact zone (the volume enclosed by the disperser); and the number of times that slurry is pumped through the contact zone. The second factor is a function of the machineÆs pumping rate and its retention time. Field data show that pumping efficiency is independent of aeration rate. In this paper, a new dimensionless number for the characterisation of flotation efficiency is presented. The contact frequency number (CFN) is defined as the number of times a given volume of slurry passes through a machineÆs active contact region, and is given by: CFN Qp/Qf, where:Qpis the pumping rate through the contact regionQfis the volumetric feed rate to the machine

What is the meaning of the Life of a Mine (LOM) if that mine results in a requirement for water treatment in perpetuity? ‘In perpetuity’ is of course a duration with no relationship to a Life-of-Mine or what might rightly be regarded by external stakeholders as a fair and reasonable post-mine recovery period. It exceeds the life span of investors, mine managers and governments, indeed even of capital markets as we know them, and of corporate and individual memories.In mine and mine closure planning, decisions are usually based at least to a significant extent on traditional economic analysis underlain by discounted cash flows (DCF). For investments in income-producing facilities, such as mining development and equipment, and ore-processing plant and equipment, this analysis reflects commercial reality and allows for comparison of competing investments. However, for environmental and social infrastructure, the same analysis using the same input parameters, especially the discount rate applied to cash flows, can lead to a bias against the adoption of best practices for non-investor stakeholders. The approach to valuations at the Normandy Poseidon Group is a measured and methodical process that utilises skills sourced from a number of different disciplines. Whilst being subject to a strict set of guidelines, it is also sufficiently flexible to be able to cope with the considerable variety across the resources industry. The group uses Discounted Cash-Flow (DCF) techniques extensively in order to develop a base valuation. Other external factors (eg the market) are, however, also taken into account when forming a view on value. Other methods of valuation are used in tandem or as alternatives depending on the task. DCF techniques are an important tool but would never be used in isolation. Considerable care must be given to developing the DCF analysis as its components (eg discount rate) are prone to misuse. Whilst the valuation process is quite detailed and scientific, it is really only as good as the inputs or assumptions (technical, financial, etc) that are used. The methodology used remains consistent whether the group is undertaking the corporate planning process or making an acquisition.

With a worldwide growing population the demand for higher living standards, food and the development of new technology is rapidly rising. To allow for a continuous growth, larger quantities of minerals and raw materials are needed at a faster pace. Different methods have been developed to access or tap ore more quickly, such as improved drill and blast operations, mechanical mining methods using equipment such as roadheaders (RH), longwall miners and other technical equipment. Another possibility to access and develop mines faster is the use of a tunnel boring machine (TBM).The historical usage of TBMs is surprisingly long, but the opportunity for technology adoption by the majority of worldwide mining companies remains largely untapped. Dozens of full face TBMs have been used by mines around the world, including two that will begin operation soon in Australia. TBMs have been used to safely and rapidly gain access to the orebody, or to expand access to the orebody to increase output by running a TBM along the edge of the orebody for several kilometres. These machines have also been used for ventilation and for conveyor tunnels for ore removal. They have been used to quickly excavate long and winding declines giving access to an orebody at several levels in a short period of time.Tunnel boring technology can be used for mine declines, mine access tunnels and all sorts of different mine designs and set-ups. TBM technology simply needs to be adapted to the mine conditions and, if manufacturers are involved early on in the planning process for mine development, the operation can be very successful. In some cases, historically typical mine designs may need to be re-thought.One mine, the Stillwater Platinum mine in Nye, Montana, is currently employing its fourth TBM in 25 years. Two were used to create tunnels running alongside the orebody, rapidly expanding access to the orebody in many locations for increased output. Two were used to create parallel access tunnels to a mine expansion at the East Boulder orebody; one tunnel is for conveyor haulage and the other for vehicular access. TBMs have been employed successfully many times to rapidly drive vehicular decline tunnels to multiple mine levels, such as at the San Manuel – Magma Copper mine in the USA. While TBM technology may not seem to be optimal for every mine, these success stories show that the method can provide vast benefits for the right projects.Early use of TBMs in extremely hard rock metal mines, in the 1960s and 1970s, had limited success since performance was low. However there have been great improvements made over the years in the strength of rock which can be excavated by TBMs with high performance. Other important improvements involve the provision of a safe work environment, safely and rapidly supporting the rock and predicting geology ahead of the TBM.This paper will briefly note the more than 20 TBM mining projects and highlight some notable successes. It will then go on to give a status report on the two active TBM mining projects in Australia and the difference between a TBM operation versus other excavation methods such as drill and blast (D&B) or RH excavation.CITATION:Rauer, M, 2014. I have spent most of the past 35 years working as an economic geologist in the area of exploration and development of base and precious metals. Most of this period has been as an employee of Trans-National-Corporations (TNC's). I presently act as a consulting geologist to a joint venture company, bringing together two such TNC's: Anglo American Corporation and affiliated companies De Beers (Diamonds) and Minorco (Metals mining outside of Southern Africa), and Normandy Mining Limited ofAustralia. Normandy is presently through its gold arm PosGold, Australia's largest gold miner and Anglo American can claim to be the world's largest gold company producing over 280 tonnes of gold a year, more than twice its nearest rival Gold Fields of South Africa. In addressing this topic, the role that Government can, and should play in mineral development, I will be drawing heavily on some examples from these and other TNC's experience in recent offshore mining investment.

The reasons for choosing autogenous grinding for the new Warrego concentrator of Peko Mines N.L. are discussed and the ores to be treated in the concentrator are described. The mill was designed on the basis of pilot tests carried out at Cobar and the performance of the mill has been most satisfactory both in its metallurgical and mechanical aspects. An empirical technique has been developed to predict mill performance for change in feed rate or feed size and a mathematical model of the mill is being developed for simulation and control work. The weight and size distribution of the mill load was determined at one set of operating conditions for use in the mill model.

"Falls of ground still cause around one-third of all underground mining fatalities. The recent introduction of mechanised room and pillar working into Indian coalmines is an example of the application of new design by measurement and safety monitoring strategies, which can be used to reduce falls of ground risks in mines.Rock Mechanics Technology, now part of Golder Associates UK Ltd (Golder), is providing rock bolt support and pillar design services to the mines using a design by measurement approach. This involves in situ monitoring to confirm support and pillar designs and pillar extraction sequences.Site examples are given of the support designs determined and the monitoring programs undertaken for both design and safety.Routine safety monitoring of roof movement using telltales is also described. A new auto warning telltale has been developed specifically to warn of imminent caving as pillars are extracted.The approach used by Golder has played a major role in ensuring the success of these projects. As a consequence, mechanised room and pillar working is now firmly established in India, and wider application is planned to help meet future demand for coal.The experience confirms that the design by measurement method for this application has important advantages over conventional design approaches using analytical or empirical methods. Firstly, it measures the design performance or outcome rather than trying to calculate or predict it. Secondly, it provides the opportunity for the design to be adjusted to obtain the optimum outcome. Thirdly, it can do this at a local level, so that the support design can be matched to changing conditions to give the most cost-effective design. Finally, it incorporates long-term monitoring of support performance, again at a local level, so that subsequent change can be identified to enable corrective measures to be implemented in a timely manner and to ensure that ground control safety is maintained.CITATION:MacAndrew, K M, Garcia, A S, Gregson, I D and Gandhe, A, 2014. In an effort to improve returns to shareholders, the Australian Mining Industry has consolidated considerably over the past decade or so. Technical services at mines have been re-structured, whilst those at corporate offices have been all but eliminated. A recent study of the role of the geologist in BM Alliance Coal Operations Pty Ltd (BMA), showed the adverse impact on the companyÆs performance due to a lack of geologists. With an education campaign, to demonstrate the contribution of geologists to the æbottom lineÆ and in increasing the options available to the company, the value of the geology role became better understood. The implications of the loss of invaluable corporate knowledge, when long serving geologists left the company, also became clear. Steps have since been taken to increase the numbers of company geologists, particularly on mine sites. In common with other sectors of the mining industry, the Australian coal industry is experiencing a critical shortage of experienced coal geologists, as companies have found in recent recruitment efforts. This is further evidence that the recommendations from the recent study by World Competitive Practices, commissioned by The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, æRising to the ChallengeÆ have not been adopted. People, and the mineral resource base, are the assets from which mining companies gain a sustainable competitive advantage. Geologists, as the nexus between the resource base and people, are in a unique position to enhance the profitability of their companies. To maximise their contribution to the industry, and ensure that they receive due recognition, geologists must adopt a more commercial approach in their work and take a front foot stance in promoting their value to management. Geology is a core competency for all mining companies. The tendency for companies to outsource this function, to the detriment of the company geologist role, is not sustainable in the longer term. TodayÆs geologists need to work closely with management, technical and human resource professionals, universities and schools to ensure their significant value is well understood, and that the industry can attract, train and retain new recruits through the implementation of graduate programs and company career paths.

Dynamic simulation (discrete event simulation) is the preferred methodology to evaluate the impact of dynamic aspects of processing plants on the overall plant capacity. This tool can be used to: identify bottlenecks in the plant,justify upgrade and expansion projects by evaluating their impact, oroptimise maintenance and operating practices without disrupting the operation. Iron Ore Company of Canada's (IOC) pelletising plant is a complex operation because of multiple products, varying equipment capacity and shifting bottlenecks. Furthermore, with extensive capital requirements for projects and long lead times, a high level of confidence in project outcome is required. Therefore, a model of IOC's pelletising plant in Labrador City was constructed in 2007 by a joint IOC and Hatch team. The model includes both operational and metallurgical aspects in order to better capture the complexity of IOC operation. In this paper, the justification, boundaries, and functionality of the model are described. A comparison of simulation results to historical plant operation is given. It is observed that projects have interactions and that the benefits of combined projects are not equal to the combined benefits of the individual projects. Projects can have synergies that result in greater benefits when combined or can have overlapping benefits that result in lower benefits when combined. The power of the proposed modeling exercise lies in the ability to assess the impact of projects on overall performance.

Mining is an activity which has, in the past, been regarded as often leaving land in a condition unfit for further use. As the need for development that is both economic and ecologically sustainable has grown, so the issue of re-use of land after mining has become significant. During operation it is usual that mine environmental conditions which minimise unnecessary or avoidable environmental impact are agreed with the regulatory authorities . These conditions are usually set down in such a way that they can be interpreted reasonably well by both miners and regulators. However, the conditions to be met by a mining company before it can be absolved of responsibility of a site are often less clear. The close-out criteria by which the success of rehabilitation programs will be judged have received little attention in the past. These conditions are now growing in importance as the costs of rehabilitation of a mine site to an agreed post-mining land use assume greater significance in the economics of mining. This paper briefly describes the status of close-out criteria presently being applied across Australia. A comparison is made with similar guidelines from other countries.

The role of the mine geologist in a business perspective is self-evident to some, but to others it may be a new concept. All mine geologists need to know exactly how they add value to the business if they are to be successful. Alternatively, if they do not add value, then they will become redundant. This paper seeks to understand some of the contributing problems that hinder the mine geologist from operating in a business perspective. In doing so, a new context (for some) is proposed to aid the mine geologist and the operation gain greater value from geology. The proposal suggests how to ensure that the activities of our geologists are intrinsically linked to the business process that we are involved in. The mine geologist can and must play a pivotal role in the success of an operation. To do this, they must understand some principles of business such as:process, customer/supplier relationships, and organisational structure. Our geologists must know the business objectives, understand the product that the customer needs and use their geological skills to deliver the product safely, on time and to specification. As geologists, we can be instrumental in ensuring that the operational environment is structured in such a way that maximum value is realised, not only from the mine geologists but the entire site team. In doing so, mine geologists will realise their full potential in delivering the outcomes the business demand, and therefore be recognised as strong contributors to business success.

In mine site revegetation, exotic grasses are more commonly used than native grasses. This is due to unavailability of native grass seed on a commerical scale and lack of information on agronomical aspects of native grasses. This paper lists a number of native grass species that have the potential to grow well on mine sites, and provides some information on their seed collection, processing and germination. Further, it demonstrates via results of a field trial conducted at Ranger Mine spoil the relative performance of ten native grasses and Rhodes grass. It is concluded that (i) some native grasses have similar ability to grow on mine spoils compared to Rhodes grass and (ii) the use of native grasses have added advantages in ecosystem restoration.

Questionnaires were sent to 12 underground metalliferous mines in Queensland to enquire how these mines control diesel emissions from mobile diesel engines used underground. Where responses or controls were absent, discussion has been provided. A significant finding concerns secondary ventilation design rates. Some mines were designing ventilation rates to meet the superseded Mines Regulation Act of 1989 which required 0.04 m3/s/kW. The current Queensland Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Regulation (2001) is risk based. In line with other jurisdictions, including New South Wales (NSW) and most Provinces in Canada, a minimum ventilation rate of 0.06 m3/s/kW is acceptable. However, this design ventilation rate will vary in practice depending on the diesel engines and controls. Dedicated ventilation engineers and technicians should be appointed to evaluate the effectiveness of the ventilation system. Personal exposure monitoring is required to confirm that exposure standards are not being exceeded. The primary control practice should be to reduce the emission at source. This can be ensured by purchasing low emission (Tier 2, Tier 3) equipment. In addition, the use of ultra low sulfur fuel (et al, 2002). Diesel fuel with a low aromatic content such as Eromanga diesel fuel will also mean employees are exposed to lower levels of poly-cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. These controls should be carried out in parallel with good maintenance practices. Preventative maintenance should be programmed and emissions be routinely tested, including both gaseous and particulate pollutants and compared against defined criteria. According to McGinn, 2002, there are a number of fundamental tools necessary to carry out preventative maintenance. These are outlined in maintenance guidelines and best practices for diesel engines in underground mining produced for the Diesel Emissions Evaluation Program (DEEP). An effective diesel emission management system needs to be fully integrated within the Safety and Health Management System. These requirements are further discussed in this paper.

SYMONS) IN PRESENTING THE MEDAL TO LAURENCE CHARLES BRODlE-HALL, C.M.G.The Institute Medal is awarded to a select band of people who have rendered great service to the mining industry and the community. Tonight it is my privilege to present the 1976 Institute Medal to one of our members, Mr L. C. Brodie-Hall, C.M.G.Laurence Charles Brodie-Hall, as chief executive in Western Australia for Western Mining Corporation Limited (WMC) from 1958 to his retirement in 1975, had a profound influence on the company's growth and development which had a significant influence on the prosperity of the State of Western Australia and, in turn, Australia.Following the company's decision in 1952 to diversify from gold mining, he took a leading part in the exploration and development of the bauxite deposits in the Darling Ranges by a subsidiary company, Western Aluminium N.L., and the subsequent formation of Alcoa of Australia Limited, the development of the first long term export contract for iron ore from Western Australia, the development of the nickel deposits at Kambalda and the subsequent establishment of a nickel refinery and nickel smelter in Western Australia.

The invitation to speak today was in the form of a single sentence instruction: How does your company run and how do you communicate from top to bottom? It looks like I'll have to let you into our little secret. The team at Croesus know what works for us but we've never talked about it with others - least of all presented it at a conference such as this. In fact we tend to avoid the jargon normally associated with Best Practice or TQM, however in our own way, each of our staff are 100 per cent loyal to our company's aim to maintain and strengthen our commercial success. Just how we achieve this at Croesus is the subject of this presentation today, but first a little history. My dear old grandfather arrived in Kalgoorlie, as a mining engineer 100 years ago. Do you think he would have chuckled if someone suggested to him that a hundred years later we would just be starting to understand Kalgoorlie's geological mysteries? Well, here we are 100 years later and Croesus Mining is fortunate to be part of a generation now realising the true potential of Kalgoorlie's Goldfields. This provides us with a very fertile field in which to sow the seeds we can obtain from the World's Best Practice in Mining and Processing. With each new mineral deposit being discovered, old theories are being exploded. Each new deposit has a personality of its own, leading to some belated pioneering theories of where to drill next, and how to reduce internal costs so that we can win the war against constantly increasing external costs. What we have now and what the old timers didn't have is a huge database of geological input spanning several gold booms and a couple of nickel booms. My only interest in history is to pick up the points that may help us for our future. This is what we are doing in our company which is something of a David, in the David to Goliath range of mining companies in Australia. As a humbling thought; of the 115 164 tonnes of gold that the world's mines have produced throughout history, four tonnes have been produced by Croesus Mining. That's equivalent to 0.003 per cent of the total world's gold production. In the past financial year we achieved a dividend yield of five per cent. To put this into perspective, that's over twice the dividend yield of BHP, Australia's largest company. As we are somewhat less known than BHP, let me spend a few moments giving some particulars of our company's background.
