Since the discovery of Pajingo in 1984, the northern Drummond Basin has emerged as a significant new gold province, and has become the focus of intense exploration for epithermal gold mineralisation. Prospects in the Conway area are hosted by felsic to intermediate lavas and volcaniclastic rocks near the base of the Drummond Basin sequence. These Drummond Basin rocks appear to represent favourable hosts to mineralisation because they are cut by structures which could have focussed and channelled fluids on a regional scale, and because they constitute a possible source of gold and, perhaps more significantly, sulphur for the transport of gold. Prospects in the Conway area are up to 15 km2 in area, and are of the adularia-sericite type. They illustrate many of the classic features (siliceous sinters, alteration mineralogy, and fluid characteristics) recognised in epithermal deposits. K-Ar dating of sericite alteration in three of the prospects has produced a range of ages from 283 to 334 Ma, suggesting that the systems are the product of multiple hydrothermal events.

Most of the Ta-Nb ores in China occur in altered granites, and Ta-Nb minerals occur in these granites as accessory minerals. This type of Ta-Nb ores are characterised by whole mineralised granite mass, large reserves, low grade of tantalum and niobium, less economic minerals, complex mineralogy, difficulty in separation and concentration of Ta-Nb minerals and high operating cost of ore dressing. The Ta-Nb ore presented in this paper is a low-grade Ta-Nb ore occurring in altered granite in Jiangxi province. It has large reserves, with the grade of Ta2O5 0.013 per cent and Nb2O5 0.023 per cent. The process mineralogy study carried out by the authors determined ore mineralogy and ascertained occurrence of Nb and Ta and their mineral processing characteristics. The results are used as the guide for developing the optimum mineral processing flow sheet. The results also indicated that this type of Ta-Nb ore contains a high content of Li, K and Na, a low content of deleterious impurity Fe, and the tailings can be used as feed for glass and ceramic materials. This study provided important mineralogy information for exploiting and utilising low-grade Ta-Nb ore resources, developing a mineral processing flow sheet and further utilising the tailings.

The Department of Resource Industries regulates and oversees safety and environmental standards for the mining and related industries in Queensland, and provides scientific support through its effort in the geosciences.The geoscientific data base accumulated over more than 120 years is very large. Therefore, accessibility to and utilisation of the data base in the most effective manner is an issue to be addressed in terms of modern information technology. The Department has developed a strategy whose implementation is progressing rapidly.

The high cost of gateroad repairs and maintenance in U.K. longwall coalmining is a clear indication of the failure of permanent support systems to fulfill their prime function, i.e. control of strata movement. The main component of gateroad support is the pack, the design and materials of which have experienced an important development process during the last 10-15 years. More recently, research investigators have attempted to give a design basis to pack quality and dimension, and reference is made to two theoretical approaches. In the course of a current research programme based upon in situ monitoring, interim design recommendations have been proposed as a means of effecting improvement in support efficiency. Identification of characteristic deformation behaviour forms the basis of the recommendations made and the subsequent improvement in gateroad performance reported.

Silicomanganese (SiMn), containing approximately 16–30 per cent Si, is produced in submerged arc furnaces using various Mn sources and quartz as the primary raw materials, along with fluxes and reductants. In the high-temperature zone known as the coke bed, a silica-rich slag is formed. SiMn is produced through the reduction of SiO2 from the slag. Dissolution of quartz into slags with different compositions, the primary slag formed from the Mn sources and flux before any MnO reduction occurred, representing conditions at the top of the coke bed, and dissolution of quartz into a partially reduced slag to simulate conditions inside the coke bed has been investigated. Experimental investigations were carried out to study the dissolution of quartz particles of varying sizes, 5 mm and 25 mm in synthetic slags with different compositions at temperatures between 1400°C and 1600°C, with varying holding times. Observed results are compared with liquidus compositions and equilibrium phases for original and formed slags. Particle size has been shown to be of little importance for the dissolution. Quartz dissolved more easily in slag at top of the coke bed than slag in the coke bed. Complete dissolution was observed after 30 mins at 1600°C in all cases, but not after 0 mins.

Over the last 100 years in the Polish mining industry considerable work has been done to assess optimum slurry, develop flexible delivery systems and adjust the fill technology to a wide variety of mining and geological conditions. Sand or industrial mineral waste materials for the backfilling of underground voids are used to control ground movement and surface deformation. This paper discusses various criteria to be considered in the preparation of a fill, including slurry properties, mine infrastructure, mining geometry, placement methods and the purpose of the backfill. This paper presents laboratory and in situ test data on the influence of materials parameters on the slurry flow in a pipeline system, stiffness, permeability, binding time and strength of a backfill, on the distribution of mixture in underground voids or the penetration between roof fall materials.

It has been observed in several Jameson cell installations where the source for flotation feed is deslime screens, that the recovery of coal particles greater than 0.5 m is not as great as that of finer material. Consequently, a research project was undertaken at a CHPP in the Bowen Basin, Queensland, to assess the possibility of increasing the recovery of coarser particles (+0.5 mm) within the downcomer of the Jameson Cell. The effect of decreasing turbulence and agitation in a commercial-scale downcomer was investigated to assess the effect on the recovery of both coarse and fine coal particles. This paper details the findings of the testwork, summarising the results relating to differences in the operating parameters within the downcomer.

The green energy transition is speculated to cause an increase in the demand for raw materials while recycling rates are improving; discoveries are required to maintain supply. Geological remote sensing offers a cost-effective way of exploring mineral resources. While satellite and airborne imaging are routinely used for exploration targeting, a gap remains at the outcrop scale. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is advantageous for large-scale regional mapping, typically performed from satellite or airborne platforms. Accurately mapping geological lithologies remains challenging in inaccessible areas, such as rough terrain or mine sites. Proximal sensing techniques can boost geological activities’ reliability, safety, and efficiency in exploration or during mining activities. It also generates objective, reproducible results and valuable raw data that can be archived, further processed, and re-interpreted. Ground-based hyperspectral imaging of outcrops has steadily increased during the last decade due to sensor development and better processing routines. There is often a big technology gap related to mineral mapping, integration of images and spectra (reduction in manual identification of minerals and types) and hyperspectral data visualisation through remote sensing. TEXMiN Foundation, in collaboration with its industry partner Dassault Systemes Foundation, carried out the project, ‘Developing Hyperspectral Image Processing and Analysis, build a rich library of Hyperspectral images of a vast range of minerals from India which will help in increasing prediction accuracy of mineral deposit for mining exploration’.

In the eastern high-strain domain of the Quadrilßtero Ferrffero, Brazil, hard and soft high-grade hematite ore may occur as schistose bodies in shear zones mainly related to the Cambotas-Fundpo thrust system. These orebodies are almost entirely constituted of oriented specularite platelets that develop both as a product of crystal-plastic deformation of hematite and solution-precipitation processes. Both mechanisms interact in the partitioning of the strain, while solution-precipitation is responsible for the precipitation of hematite and localised leaching of silica resulting in the formation of syntectonic ores. The analyses of fluid inclusions from specularite crystals of the Conceitpo and Timbopeba deposits, located in the northern and southernmost areas of the eastern high-strain domain of the Quadrilßtero Ferrffero, were studied using infrared microthermometry and Synchrotron x-ray fluorescence. The results indicate the participation of highly saline aqueous H2O-NaCl fluids containing other additional cations (Ca, Fe, K and probably Ti) in solution and homogenisation Temperature (Th) averaging between 130¦ - 190¦C. However, the partial fusion of metastable saturation phases indicates crystallisation temperatures of approximately 400¦C. The mineralisation process produces high-grade orebodies as well as Fe-rich specularitic itabirites that are explored in that area. The shear zones are related to thrust faults mapped and interpreted as related to the PanAfrican/Brasiliano Orogeny that affected the Quadrilßtero Ferrffero, thrusting the Paleoproterozoic platform sequence of the Minas Supergroup over Mesoproterozoic quartzites of the Espinhato Supergroup. They intersect and even overprint an early metamorphic and tectonic fabric of Paleoproterozoic age (Transamazonian Orogeny). The geological and fabric relationships lead to the conclusion that the fluids involved in the mineralisation were most probably of external origin, of still unknown source (possibly igneous), during the closure of the Spo Francisco Craton.

Our mining market has been successful because of the high standards of professionalism and the intellectual capital that has been built up among the participants û the mining professionals, brokers, analysts, mining investors, professional advisers and the market operator. The balance of knowledge and understanding among these participants combined with the competition for capital, contributes to the standards for our mining market in a way that the market operator simply cannot replicate by market rules alone.

With the advent of COAG reforms in the late 1990s requiring full commercial return from æpublic infrastructureÆ, and the tightening regulatory compliance for any project that involves the development or modification of any natural resource, it has become increasingly difficult for the private sector to contemplate development and/or ownership of new large-scale water supply infrastructure. The hurdles that must be overcome often seem insurmountable even before a detailed understanding of the project challenges can be developed. Australia has prospered over the last 50 years in an environment where regional development, including mining, has been encouraged by high commodity prices, a well-trained and available labour force and abundant spare capacity in the necessary infrastructure, in particular rail, power and water. Unless future infrastructure is created in advance of, or closely following, demand, this prosperity may be in jeopardy. This paper presents a snapshot of todayÆs project development challenges, and with reference to some recent case histories, argues that owing to their unique background, culture and status, water utility government owned corporations (GOCs) are well-suited to fulfilling the demand for new water infrastructure.

In this paper, a neurofuzzy model is proposed for the development of an explanatory model of an industrial gold leach circuit based on historic plant data. A regression tree was used to partition the data in the predictor variable space and the structure of the tree was used as a basis for the derivation of fuzzy rules that could be integrated into a fuzzy expert system useful for operator decision support or process control. The position and shape of the membership functions were optimised with a backpropagation algorithm in a neural network framework. The approach yielded a significantly better explanatory model of the gold losses in the plant than comparable linear models. Although a regression tree could perform somewhat better in accounting for the variance of the dissolved gold losses, the tree was less robust than the fuzzy model.

The satisfactory ventilation of an extensive coal mine is a subject which requires continual attention from all concerned.It must be remembered that a colliery contains many miles of workings, extending in all directions and throughout which noxious gases may be given off either naturally or by oxidation of the coal; fumes from explosives will be produced, dust will be gathered and carried in suspension, and water will be evaporated, producing a high humidity. Hence a considerable quantity of air in movement must be available to provide sufficient oxygen for men and horses, as well as to dilute and sweep away impurities, and maintain a tolerable degree of coolness.To maintain these conditions a modern colliery is divided up from the main ventilation shafts or adits (as the case may be) into a system of main airways, and in the working districts is further subdivided into district splits. To initiate the air movement, large centrifugal fans with a displacement capacity of up to 400,000 cu. ft. of air per minute are installed, generally in drifts off the upcast shaft, or adit, and at the return end of the ventilating circuit. These fans are thus exhausting fans and by producing a region of low density bring the heavier air at the other extremity of the circuit into movement to correct the difference in density, so far as it is not prevented by the frictional resistance of the airways. A flow of air is thus established, and it is obvious that to enable this volume of air to be as great as possible, the frictional resistance of the mine airways should be maintained at the lowest practicable figure. To this end, main airways should be as large as possible, have sides as smooth as practicable, and be straight, any necessary bends being of large radius.REQUIREMENTS OF THE VENTILATION SYSTEMThe New South Wales Coal Mines Regulation Act contains stringent provisions on requirements of the ventilation system. CSA mine, which is a deep level copper operation, located 12 km north of Cobar, NSW, currently uses a top down stoping method, utilising cemented hydraulic backfill (CHF) to fill and stabilise the stoping void thus assisting the extraction sequence. The stope sequence then requires development back through the CHF stope so that the necessary infrastructure for the subsequent stoping, such as raise bore pads can be sited. The primary and secondary support installed in the CHF consisted of 100 mm thick fibrecrete from floor to floor with 7 + 2.4 m long resin support tendons installed at 1.5 m ring spacing. This support system relied on the resin achieving a quality bond with the CHF, and also the fibrecrete developing early structural strength due to the use of an accelerator. In addition to the delays in the excavation turn around time, it was felt that a superior support system could be designed. Such a system was designed; risk assessed, tested underground, and trialled in selective CHF digouts, and eventually signed off as the chosen support method in CHF digouts. This paper discusses the change from a passive support system used in CHF digouts to an active support system using Swellex bolts and weld mesh, which has provided an active support system, that is superior, faster to install, reduced the excavation turn around time and is overall a cheaper support system.

Commercial interest in refractory gold is increasing rapidly. This trend is supported by the work patterns of Amdel, where, apartfrom routine process- ing of free-milling and refractory ores, the majority of testing now includes biological and pressure oxidation studies to enhance gold recoveries. Central Mineralogical Services have examined, among other ores, an apparently unique type of refractory coating. A summary is given of experience at Optimet Laboratories, Pty., Limited. Research into nitric acid pre-oxidation, underway at the South Australian Institute of Technology since 1987, has shown significant improvements in gold recoveries, and in some cases, large reductions in reagent consump- tions. Three final-year student research projects were undertaken in 1990, jointly between the University of Adelaide and the S.A. Institute of Tech- nology. These projects involved biological pre-oxidation, pressure leaching, and Scanning Electron Microscope examination of refractory ores, and the resultant pre-oxidation and cyanidation products.

That microorganisms, both living and dead, and products derived from the organisms, can function as flotation agents and flocculation agents is abundantly clear. They can modify the surfaces of minerals. They can function as flotation collectors and as flotation depressants and activators. In many cases they or their products can function as specific flocculation agents. Problems that must be solved before such microorganisms or products from the organisms can be used in commercial operations include culturing the organisms at a cheap cost and reduction in dosages required for various separations. These tasks are formidable. However, the concept of using such natural materials in place of various chemical reagents that may be toxic is very attractive. An attempt is made to show some of the promise of microorganisms in mineral bioprocessing and to consider the problems that must be overcome before commercial application of the technology is realised.

A philosophy is presented that new graduates in mining and metallurgy should be equipped to use computers during their under- graduate courses, should be aware of the capabilities and costs of a wide range of computing equipment, and should receive sufficient stimulus to become involved in applying computers for the benefit of the mineral industry. A program is presented in which computer applications and "hands on" involvement with computers are integrated into the progressive stages of the undergraduate courses in Mining and Metallurgy. In this respect, the role of the computer is to assist the student by performing time consuming tasks, to demonstrate the industrial applications of computing, to extend the scope and complexity of the tutorial, assignment and project work which can be undertaken by the student, and to provide the essential first stepping stones toward continued useful involvement with computers during the graduate's working life.

The Theory of Sampling (TOS) has contributed significantly to chemometrics by allowing data analysts to become more aware of total measurement uncertainty as total sampling error + total analytical error. This has allowed a new view on, for example, validation of multivariate data models and their performance. This keynote focuses mostly on the reverse perspective: how can chemometric multivariate data modelling be of help in an augmented sampling context? The basic principles of multivariate data analysis are presented and application examples are outlined from several areas in the geosciences to facilitate answers to the question posed, including a geochemical multivariate anomaly concept defined by a multivariate background model. Applications from geochemical prospecting, geochemical mapping, environmental chemistry and anthropogenic outlier recognition are outlined, as are the interdependent relationships between geostatistical modelling (variographics) of singular variables versus linear combinations of a multitude of variables, in chemometrics called scores. The potential synergy between chemometrics and TOS is far from exhausted at this time; much work remains.CITATION:Esbensen, K H, 2014. The north-eastern half of the Yilgarn Block of Archaean Rocks lies in the and zone of Western Australia. In recent years a large number of gold mines have been established there, all requiring water supplies from local groundwater. The groundwater sources that have been utilised canprise bedrock, pre-Quaternary channel deposits, and Quaternary alluvium. In the search for groundwater each type of occurrence is considered, and the choice is made on the supply potential and logistics. This paper deals with groundwater in bedrock. Using examples, sane principles of the geology of groundwater occurrence are illustrated.
