Ventilation characteristics and the occurrence of nocturnal surface inversions have been investigated within the Mount Whaleback open cut iron ore mine at Newman in Western Australia. When winds are light and/or nocturnal surface inversions form within the pit, episodes of atmospheric stagnation can occur with resultant accumulation of dust, diesel exhaust fumes, and sulphur dioxide evolved from spontaneous combustion of pyritic shale. Nocturnal surface inversions were recorded outside the mine on more than two-thirds of nights. Inside the pit, inversions were much less frequent - occurring on roughly 20% of nights when they were observed outside - and much weaker - the maximum temperature difference being 5 C¦ over 210 m inside the pit compared with 15 C¦ over 150 m outside.

Mineral-deposit geology, geochemical processes, and biogeochemical processes are fundamental controls on the environmental conditions that exist naturally in mineralized areas prior to mining, and that result from mining and mineral processing. Input from economic geologists and geochemists is therefore crucial to effectively predict, assess, mitigate, and remediate the environmental effects of mineral-resource development. Recent open pit gold mining at Summitville, Colorado, has received intense public scrutiny for a variety of environmental problems, most important of which has been extreme acid drainage. Now a Superfund environmental cleanup site, Summitville exemplifies how economic geology and geochemistry principles (1) could have been better utilized to first predict and minimize the environmental problems, and (2) can now be used to optimize the environmental cleanup.

To improve the existing process of a large-scale scheelite concentrator in Jiangxi Province, this paper presents an advanced process æselective flotation of copper and flotation desulfurisation û rougher flotation of scheelite û heating-stirring and cleaning of rougher concentrate at normal temperature without reagent removalÆ. The test work was conducted on an ore sample containing 0.75 per cent tungsten (WO3), and the following technical indices were obtained: 1.03 per cent of the scheelite concentrate yield, 65.37 per cent of the concentrate grade and 86.31 per cent of WO3 recovery, indicating that the study achieved the objective of improving the tungsten recovery. The technical key of this process is to employ combined regulators and direct flotation of the slurry after being heated, which not only assured the technical indicators of beneficiation but also simplified the process.

The Australian glass sand industry produces some 2.8 million tonnes per annum of silica sand, of which about 2.0 million tonnes are exported and the rest is for the domestic market. Approximate production rates for each Australian state are listed.The variety of processing methods used in the currently exploited deposits reflects the size, location, and characteristics of the various deposits and the requirement of the end market/s. The industry uses to a large extent equipment developed for the separation of mineral sands, particularly as it applies to low grade heavy mineral deposits, where low cost, high capacity and metallurgically efficient equipment has proved eminently suitable for the production of the low value glass sands.The requirements of the domestic market, as well as those of the present and potential export markets are discussed covering quality requirements, distribution channels and other factors critical to success.

Close circuiting autogenous and semi-autogenous mills is anenergy efficient way of grinding and a number of operations haveutilised this in the design of their comminution circuits. Owing tothe large flow of slurry through the mill that results fromoperating this way the grates and pulp lifters have to be designedto cope. However, the literature has little or no information onhow grate and pulp lifter size and design are related to theirability to remove slurry from the mill. Over the last few years theJKMRC has been researching this area and has developedrelationships between grate/pulp lifter design and flowratecapacity. At the same time it has determined the major causes ofpulp lifter inefficiency and a solution to preventing thisinefficiency (the Twin Chamber Pulp Lifter). This paperdescribes the models that have been developed through thisprogram and uses industrial scale data to illustrate their accuracy.Results from the industrial trials of the Twin Chamber PulpLifter are also presented.

Since early 1968 the Bureau of Mineral Resources (B.M.R.) has carried out VLF-EM test surveys in various parts of Australia and Papua. The aim of the work, primarily, was to examine the effect- iveness of the method as an exploration tool under a variety of Australian conditions. Selection of test areas was determined by the availability of geological, geophysical and drilling information and by the desirability to include a variety of physical variables such as depth of weathering and topography. The aim of the present account is to review the results of this work and to make an assessment of the method available to the mining industry. The author wishes to acknowledge considerable assistance both by way of data and discussion provided by Messrs. The physical and mechanical properties of rock can be measured by a variety of standard tests, and studies have shown that there should be a fundamental connection between breakage in comminution and rock æstrengthÆ. The current study aims to develop the ring-loaded strength test, used as an industry standard for the characterisation of brittle ceramics, for determination of comminution behaviour from exploration borehole core samples. The test procedure is simple, reproducible and can yield 250 separate measurements from a one metre length of drill core. The effects of material grain size and fabric on the degree of scatter of results have been investigated with respect to the ring-loaded strength test. This study has also compared the ring loaded strength to the chevron bend test used to determine the Mode I fracture toughness. A wide range of rock materials have been studied and with further work it is conceivable that an operational work index could be obtained directly from exploration drill cores tested via the ring-loaded disc test.

The accurate determination of trace level gold in ores, metallurgical samples and process solutions is required because of the value of gold, the efficiency of the cyanide leach process and because of the high gold recovery from these cyanide solutions. It is thus necessary to routinely analyse geological and metallurgical samples with gold concentrations of 3 g tonne (ug g- 1ppm) and process solutions with a gold concentration of 0.01 mgL 1 (ppm) preferably with sufficient accuracy to quote at least two significant figures. Several techniques have been reviewed for their suitability for the routine gold analysis of these samples which also contain signif- icant concentrations of other ions. The classic fire assay technique has achieved the respect and confidence of mining personnel because of the results achieved by very experienced assayers. Other extraction and concentration techniques have now been shown to be equally effective. The use of instrumental analytical techniques particularly atomic absorption spectrometry have shown that cheaper procedures, which are as reliable, are now available to gold producers for the routine analysis required to maintain an efficient gold recovery process.

Prior to 1972, Peko Mines Limited at Tennant Creek used a central mill at Peko, which consisted of a gravity circuit, flotation and cyanidation of tailings, to treat their gold ore from surrounding mines. The Warrego concentrator, 60km to the west, was built to handle the Warrego and Gecko copper orebodies, which were being developed concurrently with the concentrator construction The Warrego concentrator consisted of a flotation circuit, using autogenous grinding at 100 - 120 tph, compared to the more elaborate Peko circuit employing rod mill - ball mill grinding capable of treating only 18 - 26 tph. During development of the Warrego copper mine a gold rich ore pod was located, because of which the mining plans were adjusted to allow simultaneous, separate extraction of the copper and gold ores. However, the plans for the concentrator were not affected as the gold ore could be carted 60km to the Peko central mill for processing.

The paper discusses how automation is steadily proceeding throughout all areas of the electrolytic zinc industry. Fluid bed roasters with integral sulphuric acid plants are now on -computer control. Highly efficient, continuous leaching and purification stages, with feed-forward predictive and optimisation computer control, precede electrolytic cells with on-stream solution analysers and automatic stripping of deposited zinc. Controlled electric induction furnaces feed continuous casting lines, equipped with automatic stacking and strapping, machines, after computer based metal analysis has confirmed metal purity or alloy composition. The paper also discusses the use of computer models tied to process control systems, and the equipment and solution measurements that could be automated with advantage, using modern micro-based controllers and analysers.

A methodology is described to integrate heap leaching into a CIP operation. The paper firstly describes what is meant by a 'systems approach'. A broad view of the objectives of integration of heap leaching into CIP is given, followed by the components of the system, and then a description of the methodology for integration. The seven stages of integration are given as determination of distribution of gold, sampling, metallurgical testwork, conceptual study, pilot heap operation, pit modelling and pit optimisation. The final result is a series of optimised curves which determine the maximum value of the orebody, and the optimum cut-over grade from CIP to heap leaching.

Three methods of gold analysis are briefly described highlighting some of the problems and advantages of each. The variation of results between samples and splits and due to method preparation are illustrated. The mean percent difference of the fire assay values from the means of sample split values for three cases is 15%. Finally, a comparison of the aqua regia atomic absorption spectroscopy and fire assay fusion AAS techniques is made. This shows that the mean precision, the ability to obtain the same value, of the methods at 98% confidence are +30% and +15% respectively. The fire assay fusion atomic absorption spectroscopy method is relatively more accurate than the aqua regia method.

The concept is based upon a Stability Index, which relates to the probability of failure of a slope. This forms the basis for a geotechnical planning software package to be incorporated into a computer aided mine design system , which is currently under development.

The iron orebodies of the Pilbara region are formed by supergene enrichment of banded iron formation and rarely do such processes produce orebodies with uniform grade distrib- utions. The orebodies being mined or developed have to be worked to grade/quality constraints imposed by contractual agreement rather than natural characteristics. Hence it is imperative to use a non-biased ore reserve calculation method. The geostatistical study of a typical iron orebody is presented. Emphasised are the geological characteristics of the orebody manifested as a variable grade distribution of iron and impurities; the determination of variogram model; subsequent uses of the model for computation of ore reserves and kriged lock estimates; computation of dispersion variance and conditional simulation of orebody.

"The most commonly used method of thick coal seam extraction in Polish deep mines is multislice longwall (MSL). In MSL stability of goaf in the roof as a result of previous extraction in upper slice is a major geotechnical consideration that must be managed.This paper outlines the results of a wide range of investigations carried out in three longwalls that were in operation in a multislice system using caving with additional fly ash goaf stowing. The longwalls were operated by Katowicki Holding Weglowy SA (KHWSA) in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin of Poland.Examinations were completed on the properties of goaf at the roof of longwalls ie measurements of strength parameters of the goaf material by means of a borehole hydraulic penetrometer, determination of the goaf condition by means of a borehole endoscope and laboratory testing of the caved rock. Recent exploratory work has greatly enlarged our knowledge of the geology of the sedimentary basins of Western Australia. The most pros-pective of these for oil explorati on are believed to be the Canning, Carnarvon, 'and Perth Basins.The search for oil. in, the Canning Basin has fora the most part been concentrated in" the western part, where four main structural units are now recognized - the Lennard Shelf, Fitzroy Trough, Jurgurra Terrace, and-South Cariizin.g Basin. Of these the Leonard Shelf may. be the'most prospective. The principal objective on the Shelf is the Devonian sequence, which in-cludes well'developed reef complexes. The Lower Carboniferous is regarded., as a further objective, as it contained small quantities of oil in theMeda No. I well.In the. Carnarvon Basin most explorati on has been conducted in the coastal belt of'Tertiary folding, especially in the Cape Range-Rough Range area. -The discovery of oil in the first test well. drilled.in the-basin - Rough Range no. 1 - raised great hopes, for the quick discovery of a ecmuercial field. However the other wells on Rough Range have been dry, and no discoveries have-been made in the-wells drilled on other anticlines.in the basin.

The Perth Mint receives gold and silver from various sources for evaluation and refining. The metals are received in many forms and vary widely in assay. Refining is carried out using the Miller Process and the and the resulting market quality bullion is sold in a range of weights and alloys to suit the international bullion market and public demand. INTRODUCTION The Perth Mint was established in the late nineties as a branch of the Royal Mint, London, to refine the gold from the newly established gold- fields in Western Australia. The branch was opened for business in June, 1899. After refining, the bulk of the gold was used in the manufacture of sovereigns and half-sovereigns. Nowadays, although most of the gold received comes from the W.A. goldfields, some gold is deposited by producers in other states and in Papua-New Guinea, as well as scrap and trade wastes from manufacturing jewellers and old jewellery from the general public. Silver is deposited in the form of old silverware, recoveries from-photographic processes etc. Gold or silver may be lodged at the Mint in person, through a bank or other agency or by registered post. Telegraphic advice is usually given when gold is sent by the latter, so that insurance may be effected.

The Yinachang deposit in south-west China contains large amounts of Fe, Cu and rare earth elements (REEs). Apatite in this deposit records complex REE mineralisation and remobilisation processes.Fe-Cu-(REE) mineralisation at Yinachang occurred at ~1700 Ma, and three stages of alteration and mineralisation are identified: Na-(Fe) alteration, Fe-(REE) mineralisation and Cu-(REE) mineralisation. In the Fe-(REE) mineralisation stage, REE-rich apatite formed together with magnetite. In the Cu-(REE) mineralisation stage, fluids undersaturated with REEs interacted with early-formed REE-rich apatite, during which large proportions of REEs, especially light REEs (LREEs), were leached from apatite.At ~840 Ma, apatite experienced a second interaction with fluid. In that process, REEs were removed from the apatite structure but immediately reprecipitated into new phases within the apatite. Thus, numerous REE mineral inclusions including bastnaesite, monazite and minor Y-phosphate occur in the apatite. There are also a very small portion of LREEs that were transported out of the apatite, resulting in the growth of bastnaesite and monazite grains outside the apatite.This study demonstrates that REEs can be mobilised in multistage hydrothermal activities and highlights the significance of fluid compositions for REE transportation and deposition behaviours in hydrothermal systems.CITATION:Li, X and Zhou, M-F, 2015. The results of full-scale tests on precast segment made at University of Roma are presented. The segments were cast using fibre-reinforced concrete produced without any traditional reinforcement, by using fiber made in high-strength steel and a new type of anchorage.Bending tests were performed in order to check the bearing capacity of the segments under the flexural actions; these occur during de-moulding, handling, storage phases as well as in the in situ condition (due to asymmetric soil pressure). Furthermore, point load tests simulating the TBM thrust were performed, in order to study the construction phase (excavation).The results show that the segment response largely respects the material testing and design advice according to the Fib Model Code 2010.
