Business intelligence (BI) and business analytics (BA) are established IT technologies that are used extensively in the business environment. This paper discusses the use of these technologies in production environments and beneficiation plants.Assmang’s Khumani mine is an iron ore operation located in the Northern Cape, South Africa. Assmang Limited is jointly owned by African Rainbow Minerals Limited and Assore Limited. This paper presents a case study of a BI solution applied to this plant, which is used by metallurgists, supervisors and all levels of operations and management to extract and analyse data to control and optimise the operation of the plant.The main advantage of adopting an established BI solution is the ease with which production personnel can extract and analyse data. The data is easily presented in familiar spreadsheets and no IT staff or specific training is required to achieve this.The solution adopted at Khumani mine uses a data mart with a multidimensional model (called an online analytical processing (OLAP) cube) acting as the main repository and source of data. The OLAP cube simplifies the access and analysis of plant data.The OLAP cube stores data in a specifically-designed way, which allows extraction and analysis to be performed quickly. It is designed to hold large amounts of data on a long-term basis, which could be for the life of the plant. It also performs automatic aggregations over many dimensions on a background process.A major benefit in adopting such a BI solution is that it allows common BA methods to be applied. This is due to both the efficient long-term storage of data and the availability of standard BA tools. BA tools are now able to perform data mining, predictive analytics, forecasting and other machine-learning algorithms. The Argyle deposit in the Kimberley region of Western Australia was the world’s largest accumulation of natural diamonds. Following its discovery in 1979, the mining of associated alluvial diamonds commenced in 1983, followed by the pipe in late 1985. Over the life of the mine to its closure in November 2020, Argyle produced approximately 900 million carats of diamonds. Argyle diamonds are distinctive in having a predominance of brown colours and rare highly-prized pink diamonds, which are a signature of the deposit. The 3D geological model developed from mining and deep drilling shows that Argyle is a composite pipe formed by the coalescence of several steep-sided diatremes, each with their own feeder zones at depth, that were erupted along a NNE-trending fault. The ~1.2 Ga Argyle pipe is comprised of diamondiferous olivine lamproite volcaniclastic rocks and intruded by sparse olivine lamproite dykes. The volcaniclastic rocks are predominantly comprised of unconsolidated quartz-rich lapilli and coarse ash deposits formed by numerous phreatomagmatic eruptions of olivine lamproite magma through Mesoproterozoic water-rich sands and silts. Post-emplacement deformation has tilted the orebody 30° to the north and regional strike-slip faulting has offset, segmented, and elongated the orebody. Recent significant modifications of the geological model resulted from underground block cave operations, producing several critical lessons learnt. Diamond grade and quality reconciliation issues warranted a geological investigation which resulted in the recognition of new volcaniclastic olivine lamproite domains with a broad range of diamond grades, including some very high-grade units. The new lamproite domains had a significant effect on the block cave mining and resultant recovery of diamonds. The new findings enable a more coherent and detailed geological understanding of the volcanic emplacement and paragenetic sequence of the Argyle AK1 pipe. Structural modelling of the deposit also played a major role in the block cave mining tonnage recoveries and daily operations. The re-examination of the geology of the Argyle pipe and the results of this new information reinforces the need for ongoing robust geological work both in the early stages of mining a deposit and continued during the life of the mine.

Key indicator hydrothermal alteration minerals formed from fluids of known fluid composition (neutral versus acid pH) and temperature have been mapped for New Zealand (NZ) geothermal fields by visible/near-infrared (VNIR) and short wave infrared (SWIR) reflectance spectroscopy. Smectite, interstratified illite-smectite and illite formed from neutral pH fluids have zoned distributions with higher temperature illite (>220ºC) in and around the upflow of chloride waters and low temperature smectite (<150ºC) on the margins (eg Ohaaki, NZ). In adularia-sericite epithermal deposits, Au-Ag veins are similarly surrounded by zoned clays, with mineralised veins enclosed by illite (eg Martha, NZ) or occurring at the illite/illite-smectite boundary (eg Favona, NZ). Reflectance spectroscopy is also highly effective in identifying minerals formed from acid fluids; both steam-heated acid-sulfate waters (eg kaolinite and alunite at Rotokawa, NZ), or magmatic-hydrothermal fluids (eg pyrophyllite and topaz at Ngatamariki, NZ). These same alteration minerals commonly show zoned distributions in high sulfidation epithermal deposits (eg Rodalquilar, Spain) and in lithocaps associated with porphyry deposits (eg Lepanto, Philippines). The Pasminco mine at Rosebery in north western Tasmania is a medium sized underground base and precious metals mine. In April 1992 a major wedge failure of approximately 5000 t occurred in the backs of a main access drive to the 18 level H Lens orebody. This collapse prevented access to 190 000 t of ore which had been scheduled for production in July - August 1992. At the time of the collapse, the mine was in a transition period between mining small pillar remnants of several other orebodies and developing to the new deeper J Lens orebody.The development at this orebody was behind schedule and it was necessary to find a cost-effective and timely alternative to a 75 m bypass drive around the fall area.A Lysaght- Fletcher multiplate steel arch was available on-site from a deferred surface road project and it was decided to use this arch to regain access through the fall area. Due to the danger of continued minor falls, the entire 18 m long, 3.95 m high x 4.5 m wide tunnel had to be assembled in the 4.7 m wide x 5 m high accesss drive and pushed into the fall area as a single unit.

A custom-made set-up that measures bubble coalescence time and the thin film balance (TFB) technique were used to explore the role of residual xanthate (potassium amyl xanthate, PAX) and salt (NaCl) on the adsorption of two frothers (methyl isobutyl carbinol-MIBC, and di-propylene glycolDPG) at the air-water interface. This paper is primarily focused on the comparison of these two techniques in studying the interaction between the flotation reagents and salt emphasizing their capabilities and limits. The results from the coalescence rig showed that the presence of PAX improved the stability of bubbles in both frother solutions and led to a bubble coalescence inhibition at 50–500 ppm DPG. These measures were compared with the results from the TFB. Findings from the TFB were overall in good agreement with the bubble coalescence time, but a higher stability level was observed in thin films under the same condition. The effect of salt on the frother and PAX mixture was also explored, and the results showed an adverse impact of the salt on the interaction of frother and PAX with both techniques. However, variations were found between them in some cases. The TFB is much more sensitive to the presence of dissolved gas and oil droplets.

The valuation of exploration properties which contain no identified resources or reserves is the most subjective of all valuation tasks likely to be carried out by a geologist. The geoscience rating method proposed by Kilburn (1990) recognises this inherent subjectivity but also attempts to apply some discipline to the valuation process. Some other methods used for valuations of this type clearly lack discipline and are open to misuse and abuse. The Kilburn method essentially requires the practitioner to justify all aspects of the valuation process. The valuer must specify and, more importantly, quantify aspects which enhance or downgrade the intrinsic value of each property. The intrinsic value is called the ""base acquisition cost"" (BAC) and it represents the average cost to identify, apply for and retain a base unit of area of title. The BAC and base unit of area both vary with different types of exploration and mining title but remain constant for similar types of titles in the same mineral tenure regime. In the Kilburn Method the enhancement/ downgrading factors are determined by the geotechnical prospectivity (Kilburn Method) within the title. A modified version of the Kilburn Method presented here (""Modified Kilburn Method"") also focuses attention on other real variables besides the geotechnical attributes which influence valuations of this type, viz., competition for tenure and activity in the markets in which the exploration properties are being traded. The most active such market at present is the stock market. By utilising uniform BACs and base units of area (for similar titles) for all exploration properties (in practice in Australia this is only possible within a particular State or Territory), the method exposes the valuer's opinions of each of these variables to the scrutiny of the investor. The investor (or his professional adviser) is afforded the opportunity to directly compare valuations on different properties by different practitioners and can assess how the final valuation is weighted in respect of geotechnical prospectivity, competition for tenure, and stock/financial market sentiment. No other method currently employed in Australia to value mineral exploration properties affords the investor this `luxury', which some may argue is their right.

The use of hydrogen as a reducing agent can substantially reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the ironmaking process. Iron ore fines can be reduced in a fluidised bed (FB) using hydrogen (H2) at high temperatures (>800°C), although several studies have reported the sticking of particles which causes the bed to defluidise, effectively shutting down the process. Here, we report results from the reduction of New Zealand (NZ) titanomagnetite (TTM) ironsands in a small-scale laboratory FB (100 g) at temperatures between 800–1000°C using H2 flow rates up to 5 standard L/min. No sticking phenomena are observed under any of these conditions, which is attributed to the formation of a stable titanium-bearing oxide layer on each particle’s exterior, preventing iron-iron contact at the particle surfaces. Pre-oxidised NZ TTM ironsands have also been studied and shown not to stick. Interestingly, at lower reaction temperatures the reduction kinetics for pre-oxidised ironsands is faster than for as-received ironsands. This increased kinetic rate can be attributed to the preoxidation stage inducing micro-fractures that create a void for the hydrogen to diffuse into the inner regions of the particle. In addition, oxidation of TTM appears to segregate the particle into two distinct phases, a high Aluminium-Magnesium (Al-Mg) phase and a high Titanium (Ti) phase. The findings are important as increasing the operating temperature of the FB reactor results in a faster reaction rate and higher gas utilisation, making the process more economically attractive. Furthermore, oxidation of NZ TTM ironsands results in a faster reduction rate at lower temperatures (800°C– 900°C) opening the opportunity to reduce the reaction temperature which might be beneficial in a final commercial-scale process.

The authors were engaged to optimise a traditional rebar cage reinforced concrete segmental lining by means of finite element analysis (FEA) using macro synthetic fibres for the Shanghai metro extension. The aim of this study was to reduce or entirely replace the original steel reinforcement of the segmental lining, in order to make the precast production process faster and more economic. The outer diameter of the tunnel was 6200 mm, the thickness of the segments was 350 mm.The numerical calculations were performed by Atena Finite Element software, which is based on the combination of Menétrey-William and Rankine failure surfaces on the compression and tension sides respectively. The effect of the macro synthetic fibres was modelled as tension stiffening on the tension surface.A one-to-one full scale model of an assembled tunnel ring using the original reinforcement cages was tested at Tongji University in Shanghai, July 2013. The ring was tested to differing load levels where load and displacement were measured until failure. The author’s first step was to calculate the real displacement characteristics of the original reinforced concrete (RC) ring, then calculate the numerically modelled version, so as to compare them. The material parameters of the concrete and rebar used had been determined through basic material tests conducted at the Tongji University. (Bi, Liu and Wang, in press).The numerical modelling undertaken has shown good correlation with the full-scale physical test results. Optimisation of the lining reinforcement was achieved through the addition of fibres, resulting in a substantial reduction of the steel rebar cages. Several results have been computed with the numerical model using different dosages of macro synthetic fibres, showing that the mass of steel reinforcement could be reduced by 50 and 75 per cent respectively.CITATION:Juhasz, K P, Nagy, L and Winterberg, R, 2014. Vibration of surface caused by seismic quakes can make a risk to great mining costruction. We have to do with this risk in the Belchatow open cut mine where seismic quakes of various energy and range have occured since the end of 1970s. The seismic risk influence on the mine structure with the special attention to the slopes of an internal dump has been presented. Hydrogeological and geotechnical conditions of the lignite mining and internal dumping of overburden and ash from Belchatow power plant have been considered. Seismic activity in Belchatow open cut from 1979 to 2001 was described and the connection between mine working and seismicity of this area was investigated. The energy and approximate location of the quakes and seismological parameters of the strongest ones observed from 1995 to 2001 were presented. The mechanism of the quake focuses was determined by means of the primary-arriving wave method. Stability of the slopes was evaluated by means of the Fellenius method. It has been found that seismic events occured in Belchatow region may cause only local eboulements whereas there are not any safety risks to the stability of slopes of the internal dump in Belchatow open cut.

In mineral processing of complex sulfide ores containing copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn), flotation has been commonly used. Typical Pb mineral in the ores is galena (PbS), while some types of the ores contain anglesite (PbSO4). This article reviews our recent studies on the effects of coexisting PbSO4 on the flotation of complex sulfide ores, and a method to suppress the floatability of sphalerite (ZnS) in the presence of PbSO4 was proposed. Comparison of flotation experiments for different types of model samples showed that PbSO4 makes the separation of Zn from Cu difficult; that is, for the model sample containing PbS without PbSO4, Zn could be separated from Cu, while when the model sample containing PbSO4, Zn was recovered together with Cu as froth. Solution analysis and thermodynamic calculation suggested that Pb2+ was released from PbSO4 and reacted with ZnS to form PbS, acting as an adsorption site for the flotation collector, xanthate. This would be the main reason for high floatability of ZnS in the presence of PbSO4. As a method to suppress ZnS floatability for the ores containing PbSO4, a pre-treatment of the ores to remove PbSO4 prior to flotation was proposed. The results of model experiments using mixture of ZnS and PbSO4 showed that ~97 per cent of PbSO4 was dissolved within 30 minutes of pretreatment using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as extractant, and thus ZnS floatability was markedly suppressed. Moreover, Pb2+ extracted from PbSO4 during the pre-treatment could be recovered as zero-valent Pb by the cementation using zero-valent Fe as a reductant. The details of ZnS flotation in the presence of PbSO4 and the effects of the pre-treatment are discussed based on the results of surface analysis like XPS.

The design and installation of a major on-line stores and purchasing system, with built-in maintenance reporting and plant register capabilities, needs more than just close attention to computer design details. When the system must be available almost 24 hours a day to a number of mine stores sites, and is used by a variety of mining staff including engineers and stores clerks, as well as by remote purchasing and office staff, then simplicity of use, availability, fast response times, and other human factors become vital. Critical aspects include easy to use screen design, involving a change from the traditional hierarchical menu system, and fallback and recovery to the last transaction. Business, people and systems objectives need to be established at the preliminary design stage, so that results can be measured and corrective action taken. The amount and type of user involvement and training, at all stages from initial design to systems tuning, has a major effect on people wanting to use the system. Active user participation in systems design, data definition and collection, and use of relevant training material is needed. Project management and design problems can arise in working with database oriented computer staff, and certain design features are found useful in ensuring a responsive, robust overall system.

The Dizon open pit mine of Benguet Corporation in western Central Luzon, Philippines has yielded some 182 000 t copper, and about 26 000 kg gold and 48 000 kg silver as by products since it started operation in November 1979. The 140 million tonne orebody is associated with a small quartz diorite porphyry stock emplaced in volcanic rocks on the basal slope of a stratovolcano complex as stockworks, fracture fillings and disseminated sulphide mineralization averaging 0.43% Cu, 0.93 g/t Au and 2.5 g/t Ag. Intense hydrothermal alteration accompanied the mineralization that developed fairly distinct mineral assemblages within and around the intrusive. Post-ore volcanic activity later gave birth to an upward-flaring diatreme which broke out south of and adjacent to the orebody and partially destroying it. Subsequent volcanic activity buried the mineralized area along with the rest of the stratovolcano's surrounding slopes under a thick deposit of pyroclastic and laharic debris. Erosion eventually removed the volcanic cappings over Dizon and also exposed the quartz diorite porphyry stock which might have resulted in the truncation of a sizeable section of the Dizon deposit. The chain of stratovolcanoes that comprise southeastern Zambales range hugging the southeastern edge of the Zambales ophiolite is part of a west-facing volcanic arc that extends for some 300 km along the western margin of central and southern Luzon whose development has been correlated to the subduction in the Manila Trench located off the west coast of Luzon. Prominent WNW-trending lineaments that cut across the ophiolite appear to be splays of the Philippine Fault whose intersection with the Mt. Pinatubo stratovolcano complex might have localized the emplacement of a number of intermediate stocks along with the gold-rich porphyry copper mineralizations associated with some of them.

The Grasberg Mine is a copper and gold open pit mine operated by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) and located in the high equatorial mountains of the Indonesian province of Papua. The climate is alpine/subalpine with little seasonal variation in temperature or rainfall. The daily average temperature ranges from about 2¦C to 14¦C and the annual rainfall in the vicinity of the mine and overburden stockpiles is about 4000 mm to 5000 mm. Mining of the Grasberg open pit will continue until 2014 at which time approximately 2750 Mt of overburden will have been produced. Current overburden production rates are 200 Mt per annum. The current mill rate is 230 000 t/day from the Grasberg pit (190 000 t/day) and the underground operations (40 000 t/day). The acid rock drainage (ARD) issues associated with overburden from the Grasberg operations were identified early in the mining operation. Almost all overburden placed to date has been Potentially Acid Forming (PAF). Laboratory testing has identified four main overburden types: limestone and non-acid forming (Green waste), PAF low capacity (Blue waste) and PAF high capacity (Red waste), and Heavy Sulfide Zone (HSZ), which contains greater than 20 per cent pyrite. Waste type block modelling indicates that at least 30 per cent of the overburden production from 2003 to the end of Grasberg pit operations will be limestone. Strategies are being developed to maximise the beneficial use of limestone through strategic blending and placement for ARD mitigation and control.

The use of systematic review methods, derived from System Safety approaches used in the North American nuclear power industry, have become an accepted approach for seeking "approval" for new coal mining equipment and operational changes in NSW. Based on risk analysis, they provide a valuable and needed framework for the reduction of losses related to people, equipment and production.

The introduction of cement into underground backfilling at The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited mines to improve mining efficiencies gave rise to several major problems, the magnitude of which had not been anticipated. These problems were 1. A loss of recovery in the milling circuit due to the presence of cement 2. The presence of cement-rich slime layers on the surface of the fills 3. The introduction of a safety hazard due to the slippery nature of the surface of cemented fills 4. The deposition of cemented slimes on the levels and in underground sumps and dams. The loss of revenue due to decreased metal recoveries considerably offset the gains from increased stoping efficiencies and the use of cement was substantially reduced while, (a) the Metallurgical. Department attempted to identify the chemical nature of the problem and overcome it, and (b) the Mining Department investigated methods of reducing cement contamination of the ore stream. As a part of this investigation the Mining Department added polymeric flocculants to the cemented fill pulp. Testwork was carried out in the following steps 1. The available Alfloc polymers were screened to determine which was the most effective and what was its optimum dosage rate. 2. This polymer was used in the laboratory to determine the reduction of surface slime, clarity of water, and effects on strength and percolation of fill. 3. Fills were placed underground to substan- tiate the laboratory work. /+. The polymer was then added to all cemented fills going underground to study its effect over a long term. The use of flocculants not only improved the distribution of cement in the body of the fill, but also the distribution of the fines fraction of the filling material, practically eliminated slippery surfaces and improved the clarity of the drainage water. Flocculant is now added to all cemented fills and restrictions on the use of cement are gradually being lifted.

Three ores (sulfidic, oxidized and carbonaceous) were analyzed to determine the effects of leaching time, ore depth, and ore mineralogy on cyanide species concentration. NaCN solutions were percolated through opaque columns filled with milled ore. Column design made liquid sample collection possible from various depths at specific times. The concentrations of weak acid dissociable(WAD) and total cyanide, Fe(CN)63 , Fe(CN)64 , SCN , and Cu(CN)43 were determined for each sample. Extended percolation time led to increases in WAD cyanide concentra- tions and decreased SCN and Cu(CN)43 concentrations regardless of ore depth. WAD cyanide concentration decreased while Fe(CN)64 concentra- tion increased with ore depth. Highest concentrations of Fe(CN)64- SCN and Cu(CN)43 were found in the sulfidic ore, with expected low WAD cyanide concentrations. A major environmental impact study carried out in the sand dunes of eastern Cape York used image analysis of remotely sensed data to both select sites for ground investigation and categorise the different ecological units present. The approach adopted was particularly suited to the type of environment in question and allowed a high degree of quantification, at a high level of confidence, at costs several orders of magnitude less than conventional Methods.

To assess the present-day functionality of large-scale sublevel caving at LKAB Kiruna a comprehensive measurement program was undertaken involving blast function, fragmentation and gravity flow. As part of this assessment, a fragmentation measurement trial was performed based on 3D imaging of the drawpoint and corresponding bucket load of the underground load-haul-dump (LHD) excavator. 3D image data from stereo photogrammetry was collected and an automated image analysis strategy developed. A number of data sets were collected for each of the drawpoint and LHD bucket, along with sieving results for four of the LHD bucket loads (totally about 70 t). Two of the sieving results were used to inform the automated image analysis strategy, and two were held back as a comparison. Large variations in the visible particles are apparent when comparing corresponding drawpoints and LHD buckets highlighting the impact of sampling location and the need to measure large quantities of data in order to avoid bias from small samples. The results show that 3D imaging and analysis can produce fully automated measurement and analysis of the visible particle size distribution. Although this is not the same as the sieve-size distribution it provides useful estimation of both the larger size classes and a bulk estimate of fine material below approximately 60 mm. The 3D stereo photogrammetry measurement system used produced very high 3D point density but this was achieved using a custom up-sampling technique which significantly smoothed the data, removing small particles, smoothing edges, and this negatively affected the particle delineation algorithms.CITATION:Thurley, M J, Wimmer, M and Nordqvist, A, 2015. A field trial of the prompt neutron-gamma SIROLOG technique was undertaken by the CSIRO - Division of Geomechanics at Callide Coalfields during July 1989. The trial investigated whether the sonde could reliably be used for the determination of Ash and Iron Oxide (Fe2O3) in coal seams, which had a highly variable iron content. Ten boreholes were logged, being water filled of a nominal diameter of 120 mm. The logging probe employed a 1.6 ¦g 252Cf neutron source and a 51 x 51 mm BGO detector. The source to detector distance was 15 cm. The results from one exploration borehole at the Dunn Creek Mine are discussed in the paper. The rms deviations for ash and iron determination between the neutron-capture predictions of the geophysical logs and the laboratory - chemical assays were 1.9 per cent Ash and 0.88 per cent Fe respectively. Using existing empirical equations which relate iron oxide concentration in coal ash to Initial Deformation Temperature (reducing conditions) at Callide, it may be possible to indirectly determine ash fusion properties as least as accurately, on a more detailed ply-by-ply basis, and more cost competitively than current laboratory techniques allow.

The relative merits of treating coal by flotation and spiral concentrators have been examined by tests on run-of-plant fines samples from three seams in the Wittingham coal measures of the Upper Hunter Valley. Flotation of the complete fines was found to be the most metallurgically efficient process with yields substantially superior to those obtained from treatment of only the deslimed fines. A strict comparison between spirals and flotation for the treatment of the deslimed fines was impossible due to differences in product quality. However, the results indicated that the performance of a flotation circuit would be equivalent, and sometimes superior, to that of a spiral circuit.
