Braeside Borefield, located 120 km southwest of Mackay, is owned by BHP Mitsui Coal Pty Ltd (BHP Mitsui). The borefield provides water to BHP MitsuiÆs South Walker Creek and Riverside Coal Mines and communities in the northern portion of the Bowen Basin. Braeside Borefield has also provided water for other users in the region, including the Peak Downs, Goonyella and Saraji Coal Mines owned by BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA). Water is sourced from alluvial sediments at the confluence of Nebo and Denison Creeks, and transferred a distance of almost 100 km to Riverside Mine and other users. Since commissioning in 1983, monitoring and maintenance programs have been key elements in borefield management. The impact of pumping on groundwater resources is monitored at the borefield, upstream and downstream over a distance of about 50 km. Current annual pumping is of the order of 4000 ML, and in excess of 50 000 ML has been pumped since the commencement of borefield operations. Detailed reviews of borefield performance are conducted every two years. BHP Mitsui actively participates in community consultation on groundwater issues arising from operation of the borefield. Declining groundwater levels from prolonged drought conditions have increased community interest in management of the borefield. Rehabilitation of existing production bores and augmentation of the borefield is currently being investigated to more evenly distribute pumping rather than to increase overall capacity.

The relationship between the maceral composition of coal and the strength of the coke produced from that coal has received a great deal of attention in recent years. Studies using two Bulli Seam coals, and blends of Bulli and Wongawilli Seam coals, from the Illawarra Measures of the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales were carried out. The optimum range of vitrinite was found to lie between 45% and 60% (mineral matter free). Above and below this vitrinite range coke strength deteriorated. I Coke strength indices increased with rank and the optimum vitrinite content increased with an increase in rank. These changes will require confirmation as trends by testing a third level of rank. It was noted that vitrinite content decreased with an increase in the specific gravity of separation of the coal. . T Use of- petrographic analyses will increase confidence in choosing coals for coking, provided the coals are well known. Such analyses offer the possibility of greater flexibility in coal purchases and the possibility of producing a marketable blend from coals, which have limited market potential. Critical base coals for blends can be conserved. Significantly more work is required before coal reserves can be utilised to optimum advantage. This work would require extension of-the studies discussed in this paper and, in particular, the testing of a wider range of rank.

In the traditional analysis of airblast and ground vibration, it is often assumed that only that single blasthole possessing the maximum charge weight (or a small group of blastholes initiating in an 8 ms time window) will determine the peak level of airblast or vibration. This assumption is examined in light of waveform superposition, and is found to be unsound. More rational alternatives are given in which all blastholes (or a selected number of blastholes) are assumed to contribute, in varying degrees, to the peak vibration or airblast. However, it is also shown that there is generally no precise solution for determining the number of blastholes that contribute to the peak level. The technique of waveform superposition does not rely on evaluating which group of holes produced the peak, and so is the preferred method for prediction. Some numerical and analytical models of wave superposition for airblast and vibration are also reviewed and recent approaches discussed. The directionality of airblast, in particular, is analysed in detail using a new superposition model that is constructed of two submodels, onenumerical, the other analytical. This model shows that the airblast from even a single blasthole can be highly directional. The detail of this model is commercially sensitive and will not be discussed. Only results and a broad discussion will be given.

The mining industry has come through a period of major change in community expectations regarding safety and environmental impact and these changes can be expected to continue in the future. These changes are ultimately reflected in Government regulations and industry safety standards and form the basis of the ælicense to operateÆ. Equally, advances in technology have made possible new equipment and processes either available now, or close to completion, that will allow mines to meet these more stringent expectations if properly introduced. Changes in technology provide opportunities for mine management to introduce new systems that will remove people from hazardous areas and lead to improvements in the ætriple bottom lineÆ. In a longer time frame of five to ten years, novel and advanced technologies that are currently being developed will deliver new mining methods and conversion of presently uneconomic resources to ore. This is consistent with the time frame required to develop a new mine from discovery. Strategic decisions can be taken now by mine designers to enable the introduction of these major technology changes. Examples of both practical and strategic opportunities are drawn from the integration of rock cutting/blasting, automation, electronic communications and new mining methods. This paper discusses emerging industry trends, changes to legislative framework and some practical choices for existing and imminent technology.

For some underground structures, the use of the plane strain assumption in stress analyses may not be justified. The finite element method and photoelasticity have been used to obtain complete 3-D solutions, but, for various reasons, neither method has found universal use. The boundary integral equation method (B.I.E.M.) can be more efficient and economical than the finite element method for 3-D problems involving large volume to surface area ratios. A B.I.E.M. program developed for calculating stresses and deformations in infinite elastic media has been used to determine the 3-D distributions of stress around T- and Y- junctions of circular tunnels in stress fields in which the ratios of horizontal to vertical stress are 0, 0.33, 1.0 and 2.0. For the T- junction considered,stress concentrations at the intersection are approximately twice the plane strain values. Except where horizontal field stresses are high, the stresses in both tunnels approximate the plane strain values at about two tunnel diameters from the point of intersection of the tunnel centre lines. The stresses in the two branches reach those for the corresponding plane strain, two parallel tunnel case two diameters from the point of intersection of thq inner tunnel walls. Very high stress concentra- tions occur in the pillar of rock between the inner tunnel walls near the point of intersection.

A laminar-flow furnace technique was used to study the combustion of 37-53 µm size fraction of Woodlawn copper concentrate containing 7.4 per cent zinc, 5.0 per cent lead and 22.5 per cent copper. Factors studied included the effect of time, temperature and the distribution of volatile elements between the panicles and the fume. Air was used for most of the work but a few tests were carried out using 1 per cent oxygen in nitrogen. Chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron and optical microscopy of polished sections were used to characterize the reaction products.When the concentrate was combusted at low temperatures (800-900°C), the fume was rich in lead. At higher temperatures, this was diluled by increasing amounts of zinc and copper. 70 per cent of the zinc, 60 per cent of the lead and 40 per cent of the copper were found in the fume after oxidation at 1400°C. Lead, zinc and copper were present in the fume as anglesite (PbSO4), zincite (ZnO) and cuprite (Cu2O) respectively. The major phases present in the panicles were magnetite (Fe3O4) and/or cuprospinel (CuFe2O4), with some zincite and cuprite.Elemental copper was found in the particles oxidized in 1 per cent oxygen. Possible vapour species responsible for the vaporization are discussed.

The Eastern Distributor Tunnels - the first major road tunnel project in Australia - are the preferred solution to traffic congestion problems, when compared with alternatives, in this inner urban environment. This is because of the reduced impact on residential housing, the improvement of the existing environment, less restrictions on future developments, and a reduction in noise and pollution. Developments leading to a tunnelled solution, traffic needs and reasons for route location are discussed. Criteria for design of tunnel alignments and geometry are described, including the restraints imposed by surface connections on profiles and grades resulting in low rock cover at tunnel portals. The main geotechnical restraints are a major weathered dyke at the shallow large span underground fork and the weathered Ashfield Shale capping the Hawkesbury Sandstone at a portal. Rock cuttability and excavation methods are discussed. Roadheader machines are the most suitable for the varying shallow arched cross sections required and the tunnel lengths involved but the use of blasting in special situations cannot be ruled out. Initial support for the major tunnel lengths will be provided by rock reinforcement in conjunction with shotcrete. Steel ribs are proposed in areas of low cover and weak ground. Final support will comprise an insitu concrete lining. Construction concepts and special tunnelling methods required at the shallow underground forks and tunnels are described.

From experience in the design and operation of power station combustion facilities in most mainland Australian States, involving a wide range of black coals and lignites, and in the specification and procurement of coal supplies for power station use, techniques for the optimisation of coal resource development and power generation utilisation have been developed to ensure compatibility between characteristics of the selected coals and power station design. These techniques include computer data bases for resource data handling and computer simulation of coal-fired boilers for determining coal property cost effects. Data Base Systems allow results of coal analyses to be efficiently handled, to assist in the review of the relevance of resource data to the coal sections proposed to be mined and the coal fractions proposed to be marketed. Data Base Systems also facilitate the marshalling of coal quality data into basic utilisation format to enable a proper utilisation review and analysis of the certainty and scatter of coal properties. Computer simulation of the effects of different coal properties on the capital and operating cost of power stations is achieved by establishing conceptual design parameters of the major items of plant to relate the variations in coal specification to equipment size and type. Variations in power station budget costs can then be determined using the computer model for variations in coal specification.

The uranium grade in roll front deposits is the result of successive processes that can be summarised in two steps. First a sedimentary phase, which gives the deposit support, then an oxidation-reduction phenomenon, which leads to the uranium deposit itself. In order to simulate such a deposit, it is important to mimic these different phases. The final aim of such a study is to localise the uranium itself and to reproduce the internal heterogeneity of the orebody in order to simulate the recovery process. The idea in this paper is not to reproduce a genetic approach but to consider the final image of the deposit. Three approaches are proposed. The first one consists of simulating the facies of the sedimentary deposit. The second approach reproduces the distribution of facies resulting from oxidation phenomenon (reduced or oxidised facies). The third approach consists of simulating the mineralisation at the interface of reduced and oxidised areas using the definition of a new data set determined by the grade values. At the end of each approach, the uranium grade could be simulated facies by facies according to the corresponding distribution characteristics. The plurigaussian method dedicated to random set simulations is well-suited for the facies simulations of deposits resulting from several sedimentary processes whether correlated or not. In this paper, the benefit of this method is demonstrated in an actual case study.

The M2 Upgrade Project involved widening 15 km of the existing M2 Motorway, which is a key route in Sydney’s road network. The Norfolk Twin Tunnels in North Epping convey traffic over a 460 m length of the motorway. The project involved widening the twin tunnels to provide a third lane and breakdown lane in each direction.The widening of the tunnels was fundamentally different to other ‘greenfield’ tunnel projects in that the operation of the tunnel was maintained throughout construction, with motorway traffic permitted close to the excavation faces on a daily basis. The widened works had to integrate with the existing tunnel support, construction details, and mechanical and electrical infrastructure.The existing tunnel afforded the opportunity to review existing ground conditions in the tunnel. Exposures were mapped within the tunnel, and key design parameters were back-analysed from the original monitoring data to provide increased confidence in the assessed impact from the widening works.Traffic capacity of the tunnels was maintained by detailed staging of the works, and included the ability to reopen the tunnels at short notice.A permit to tunnel system was developed to manage the risks associated with re-opening the tunnel to traffic. A comprehensive suite of instrumentation was maintained to provide reliable monitoring data to support this process. Emphasis on the robustness and reliability of tunnel instrumentation provided increased confidence in the adequacy of the tunnel support being installed. The monitoring was routinely compared with design predictions to check the adequacy of the support measures being installed and confirm the design.The approaches and methodologies developed for the widening of the Norfolk Tunnels were effective in maintaining the safe operation of the tunnels throughout the two years of construction, and provide a framework for increasing the capacity of existing tunnel infrastructure in the future.CITATION:Clarke, S J, de Ambrosis, A L, Bertuzzi, R and Redelinghuys, J, 2014. Mining is being carried out using the sublevel open stoping method at the Kayad underground mine. The mine will ultimately reach a depth of 390 m. Kayad village is only 100 m (horizontally) from the underground mining areas. As a result, blast-induced ground vibration is one of the major issues for the residents of the village. This paper deals with the process involved in optimising blast design parameters at the development face blast, slot raise blast and ring hole blast to control blast-induced vibration within safe limits while ensuring improved production, productivity and safety. In total, 1041 development face blasts, 110 slot raise blasts and 52 ring hole blasts were conducted, and 2612 vibration data were monitored in the village at different locations. Initially, electronic delay detonators were used, with an emphasis on controlling vibration in the surface structures. Subsequently, shock tube (Nonel) initiations were used as the blasting faces reached lower depths. A comparative study was also performed for both the initiation systems. The orebody width generally varied from 3.1 to 7 m, and ring hole designs were optimised accordingly. The number of holes in a ring was up to seven and the depth was up to 23 m, depending on the size/width of the orebody. The ring blasts were performed with 64–340 kg of emulsion cartridge explosive and detonated with explosive weight per delay of 10.92–17.16 kg. Extensive experiments were performed and blast-induced vibrations were controlled in the village. Deck blasting (ie up to four explosives decks) was used in a blasthole and the explosive charges were separated by delay detonators, which helped to control the vibration in the village. The actual detonation time of each deck was recorded by monitoring the in-hole velocity of detonation of the explosives, and the charging patterns were optimised accordingly to get the desired blast results.CITATION:Roy, M P, Singh, P K, Sarim, M, Jaitawat, P S and Joshi, A, 2015. The Gold Fields Cerro Corona copper-gold deposit in Peru has heterogeneous rock characteristics in terms of its mineralogical, geological and geotechnical properties. Blast design variations in these conditions directly impact the run-of-mine (ROM) fragmentation, which in turn influences downstream process efficiencies. In particular, when harder ore is processed, throughput and circuit performance may be limited.To evaluate the potential to increase throughput and improve overall plant performance by optimising blasting practices and comminution circuit operation, Gold Fields La Cima engaged Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) to conduct a full process integration and optimisation project at Cerro Corona. Blasting, crushing and grinding processes were reviewed to identify the potential to achieve substantial improvements in productivity when treating the most competent ore types.Site-specific models of the blasting, crushing and milling processes were developed using SmartTagTM ore tracking technology for calibration and validation. Ore tracking permitted locations in the blast volume to be queried against the geotechnical block model to determine the hardness and structural parameters of the feed to the comminution circuit. They also ensured surveys were conducted when ore from the audit blast was flowing through the crushing and grinding circuits.The predictive models developed enabled PTI to demonstrate how changes in blast design influenced both ROM fragmentation and the performance of downstream comminution processes. Outcomes of the project suggested changes to blast designs and comminution practices, and these were partially implemented for a validation trial. The trial demonstrated a 14.8 per cent increase in mill throughput for the specific ore selected for the study, and an average increase of 5.7 per cent for all ore types. There is potential to further increase throughput and process performance if all recommendations are implemented. The Cayeli volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit is located in Black Sea region of Turkey. Cayeli Bakir Isletmeleri (CBI) was formed as a joint venture between Inmet (Canada) and Eti Holding (Turkey). CBI is processing complex copper/zinc sulphide ores. The Cayeli concentrator was commissioned in 1994, with a design capacity of 600 000 tonnes/year. The grinding circuit was a classical rod mill/ball mill combination. The rod mill was converted to a primary ball mill in May 1997. The reasons for conversion were to use mill power more efficiently and eliminate feed interruptions during rod charging. The grinding circuit now has a primary ball mill in open circuit, and a secondary ball mill in closed circuit with hydrocyclones. Classification was originally done in two stages with hydrocyclones. Both mill discharges were combined and pumped to a primary cyclopack having two, 500 mm diameter cyclones. Primary cyclone overflow was pumped to a secondary cyclopack for further classification. The secondary cyclopack had ten, 200 mm cyclones. Both unit underflows were fed to a secondary ball mill by gravity. The secondary cyclone overflow, typically 62-64 per cent passing 36 ¦m, at around 42 per cent solids (w/w) was fed to flotation circuit. In order to increase circuit capacity to 1 000 000 tonnes/year and to improve control over the grinding circuit, it was decided to convert the classification circuit from two stage to one stage. For this purpose, six Warman Cavex cyclones having 400 mm diameter were installed. Now, the combined primary and secondary ball mill discharge was classified in single stage with the Warman cyclones in closed circuit with the secondary ball mill. The cyclone overflow goes directly to the copper rougher circuit as flotation feed. The grinding circuit is producing a flotation feed of 70 per cent passing 36 ¦m. The change over to single stage classification at Cayeli was successful. A mill throughput of 1 000 000 tonne/year is being achieved with better control over classification, and improved grind size. Results and comparison between the two classification circuits are presented in the paper.

The Culampajß auriferous district is located in the northern sector of the eastern edge of the homonymous hill, Catamarca Province, Argentina. Tajo Largo mine is situated in the southern flank of Las Minas gulch at an approximate height of 3.600 m above sea level. In the studied area main outcrops are orthogneiss rocks of Chango Real Formation. The ore mineral is native gold with a lesser amount of pyrite, chalcopyrite, haematite, limonite, malachite, azurite and covellite. These ore mineral assemblages are disseminated in quartz veins filling tension fractures in the host orthogneiss.Several types of inclusions have been recognised, including three phase H2O-CO2liq-CO2vap inclusions, polyphase inclusions with H2O-CO2 and one or more solid phases, and two phase aqueous inclusions. In the three phase H2O-CO2liq-CO2vap inclusions the Tmclath is about 1¦C and the CO2 liquid-vapour homogenisation occurs at 26 - 28¦C, to liquid phase. The homogenisation temperature of H2O-CO2 occurs at 365 - 380¦C in the aqueous phase. This set of data defined a solution with a salinity of 14, 4 wt per cent NaCl equivalent and a density of 0.84 g/cm3. In the two phase aqueous inclusions the melting temperature (Tm) of -5.4¦C and the eutectic point (Te) in -38¦C indicates a salinity of about 7.5 wt per cent NaCl equivalent, with the probable presence of Ca2+. Density of fluid is about 0.83 g/cm3. Homogenisation temperature ranges between 260¦ and 280¦C. The pressure, temperature and salinity of fluids in the polyphase inclusions suggest an early fluid of high density and high salinity. The three-phase fluid inclusions may be the result of an unmixing-phase separation of post magmatic hydrothermal fluid due to pressure decrease along fractures. It is suggested that the deposit was formed during the late magmatic hydrothermal stage genetically linked to granitic rocks and can be comparable with the intrusion-related gold system of Baker (2003).

High stress in rock masses can cause significant instability problems such as squeezing deformation in soft rock and rock bursts in hard rock. The support system applied in burst-prone areas in high-stress conditions is required to be able to carry high load and accommodate large deformation of the rock mass without experiencing any serious damage. Yielding support systems are promising to provide support for both squeezing and burst-prone rock mass encountered in mining or tunnelling at depth. They are ideally strong and stiff initially and then ductile after yielding (Potvin and Hadjigeorgiou, 2020). With respect to support design, a ground support system has to create a safe working environment under both static and dynamic loading conditions by providing the functions of reinforcing, retaining, holding and connecting elements (Cai and Kasier, 2018). Rigid rock bolts and cable bolts perform reinforcing and holding functions of a ground support system. In highly fractured ground or with large excavation spans (eg at roadway intersections or in caverns), unstable ground depth can exceed the length of typical rigid rock bolts (ie greater than ~3.0 m). In such cases, flexible cable bolts are needed to tie the reinforced and retained rock mass back to deeper and more stable rock. The flexibility of cable bolts allows anchor lengths greater than the tunnel opening that would otherwise restrict rigid bolts. Cable bolts also offer higher strength to weight ratio, with tensile strengths 2–3 times that of standard rebar bolts. This high strength comes at the cost of lower strain tolerance, typically around 5–7 per cent at break. Despite the lower strain tolerance, cable bolts are often used as dynamic support in demanding burst-prone ground conditions. The lower strain tolerance is compensated by allowing sufficient free length for stretching or incorporating a yielding device. There are a number of dynamic cable bolts available on the market and a number of testing campaigns have been undertaken to quantify the dynamic performance of these cable bolts. This paper reviews the existing range of dynamic cable bolts and discusses the potential areas for improvement and further research.

The Sao Chico gold project is located on the Tocantinzinho trend which is the most mineralised zone in the Tapajos Mineral Field of Brazil (see Figure 1). The Tapajos goldfi eld was the site of the biggest gold rush in Brazilian history in the late 1970s and 1980s when approximately 500 000 garimpeiros (artisanal miners) rushed to the area to exploit extensive areas of newly discovered alluvial gold. Approximately 20 - 30 million ounces of gold were produced from these operations before the easily won alluvial gold deposits were largely depleted. The Tapajos region has had little exploration by modern exploration methods compared to any other equivalent gold fields in the world. The gold occurs in sulfide veins developed in shear zones within Proterozoic granites. Gold grades vary from approximately 15 g/t in the hard rock veins, to up to several ounces per tonne in the supergene weathered upper portions of the veins. Goldbearing vein zones in the weathered profile are free digging. In addition, tailings dumps from previous mining operations contain gold grades of approximately 1 g/t. Metallurgical test work conducted to date indicates that gold recoveries of at least 70 per cent can be achieved via gravity concentration. Gold Anomaly, via its 100 per cent owned Brazilian subsidiary, Gold Aura Do Brasil Mineracao Ltda (GOAB), plans to mine the tailings and weathered vein material by open cut methods to generate a quick cash fl ow and to provide a better understanding of the mineralisation as part of a feasibility study for mining the underlying sulfide zone mineralisation (see Figure 2). Mining will utilise locally hired excavators and trucks and ramp up to a rate of 100 tonnes per day. To treat the gold-bearing material, GOAB has purchased an integrated 'state of the art' gravity concentration processing plant from Gekko Systems of Australia. The processing plant includes a scrubber for clay and oversize removal, coarse gold gravity separation via an inline pressure jig and an inline spinner; and fine gold gravity separation via a Falcon Concentrator. The plant is expected to be operational by late 2010. This is an ABSTRACT ONLY. No paper was prepared for this presentation.

The papers in this section of the conference and indeed the conference as a whole will rightly focus on the recent û the state of play around the Pacific Rim. However, to set the scene I propose to take a longer-term perspective. In so doing I wish to illustrate and emphasise that change is normal and natural û to paraphrase Bob DylanÆs 1963 classic, æThe times they are (always) a-changinÆ Æ. The challenge is how to cope with such change, in an industry, a corporate and a personal sense. A further challenge for geologists, both exploration and mine-based, and indeed for anyone, is to understand where they fit in the broader picture. For several reasons it is appropriate first to look briefly at the minerals industry in the Pacific Rim around a century ago. It was here in Adelaide in April 1893 that the first general meeting of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers (or The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy as it later became) took place and where the Centenary Meeting was held in 1993. The late 1800s and early 1900s was a period of extraordinary change in the minerals industry regionally and worldwide. The industry benefited from the economies of scale provided by improved mechanisation. It further benefited from the introduction of technically qualified professionals, such as chemists, metallurgists and mining engineers, although the usefulness of geologists had yet to be recognised commercially. With the rise of such professionals, technical societies formed and flourished. At the same time international financial markets and trade were expanding, a gold standard was widely supported and the financing of mining ventures was well established. Mining was an international business and its people travelled widely. As a consequence of the better-educated mining professional, the ready exchange of knowledge and the availability of finance, new processing techniques such as pyritic smelting, the cyanide process and flotation were developed. These, together with much improved materials handling in the mining and processing phases, dramatically changed the economics of the minerals industry.

The conventional method of transporting mine tailings from a process plant to a tailings storage facility (TSF) is in the form of a low to medium density1 slurry, which can be pumped using centrifugal pumps. Over the past several decades, therefore, mine operators have generally adopted this default approach. There are, however, some convincing arguments why consideration should be given to thickening the tailings slurry to a higher density paste consistency. In particular, the minimisation of environmental impacts, the reduction in water consumption and the cost savings relating to TSF closure make paste an attractive option for the life of mine tailings disposal. There are several environmental impacts that are associated with a conventional slurry TSF, such as land sterilisation, aesthetics, dust, seepage and acid mine drainage. Some of these impacts, such as dusting, may be difficult to mitigate while the TSF is in operation. Others can be influenced by adjustments made to the tailings slurry density at the plant. Unplanned fluctuations in slurry density and/or viscosity can have a significant influence on TSF performance and can exacerbate the environmental impacts relating to the facility. Relatively minor changes in the solids content of the slurry can affect tailings beaching behaviour, degree of segregation, position of the phreatic surface, amount of freeboard, consolidation behaviour, placed (settled) density (and hence TSF capacity) and in situ strength of the tailings. Paste is a non segregating slurry and many of these effects can be minimised at the TSF when the tailings slurry is thickened to a paste. These improvements are manifested by reduced seepage, flexibility in selecting an appropriate final landform, ability to rehabilitate progressively and reductions in plant water usage. It is possible to minimise environmental impacts of a TSF through the use of tailings paste. Ideally the paste production plant should be part of the initial design of the process plant. However, significant benefits can be gained by adding a paste production plant at some time later in the operational life of the mine to reduce environmental impacts and facilitate an environmentally acceptable TSF closure.

The Argyle diamond deposits in the East Kimberley were found as a result of a long term exploration programme, begun in 1972 by the Kalumburu Joint Venture (KJV), to search for diamonds on the Kimberley craton. When CRA Exploration Pty. Limited joined the KJV in 1976, it was re-named the Ashton Joint Venture (AJV). The Kimberley craton was considered prospective by analogy with structural settings of diamondiferous kimberlites in Africa. Diamonds were found during regional drainage sampling in Smoke Creek in late 1979, which led directly to the discovery of the rich Argyle lamproite diatreme (AK1) and associated alluvial deposits of Smoke and Limestone Creeks. The diatreme intruded into quartzites, sandstones and shales of Adelaidean age, and consists predominantly of lapilli ash tuff, with minor coarse and fine ash tuffs, 'non-sandy tuff' and olivine lamproite dykes. Erosion of the diatreme has produced the alluvial deposits of Smoke Creek and Limestone Creek to the north and east. Argyle diamonds are of predominately industrial quality, and the typical diamond is a brown, irregularly shaped, frosted, heavily resorbed form with abundant graphite inclusions, well developed etch channels and prominent hexagonal surface depressions. The pre-feasibility evaluation of AK1 comprised diamond drilling, surface and underground sampling, metallurgical sampling, marketing studies and ore reserve estimation. The proven AK1 ore reserve is 61Mtonne at 6.8ct/tonne. Evaluation of the alluvial deposits gave results of Upper Smoke Creek, 580 000 tonne at 4.6ct/tonne and Limestone Creek, 1.7Mtonne at 3.5ct/tonne. Commercial production from the two alluvial deposits began in 1983 with production for the year reaching 6.2 Mct. Mining of the alluvial deposits at three to five Mct/year is proposed to continue until the start of mining of the AK1 deposit in late 1985 or early 1986 at which time a new processing plant and associated infra- structure will have been constructed adjacent to the AKl deposit in the Limestone Creek area. Production is planned at three Mtonne/year, producing 25Mct/year, which will make Western Australia the largest producer of natural diamond (by weight) in the world.

Chrysotile asbestos is a valuable resource. Used as a reinforcement in asbestos cement, products are obtained which are cheap, are not attacked by vermin, do not rot or support growth of fungi and are unaffected by water or humid conditions. Such products are of great value in the developing countries where inexpensive and durable building materials and pressure pipe are very important to development, housing and water supplies. Concern over the adverse effects of inhaling asbestos has led to the introduction of increasingly stringent controls world wide on the quantities of airborne asbestos per- missible in the occupational situation. Wet processing has the potential for virtually eliminating the environmental concerns with asbestos dust both in fibre production and in the materials handling section of the manufac- ture of asbestos cement products. In addition, high efficiencies associated with wet process- ing mean that better yields are obtained and that the tailings which are dumped have a lower residual asbestos content. Since early 1977, ICI Australia and Woodsreef Mines have been engaged in a programme of research to develop and evaluate a wet mill- ingprocess to produce, from ore and existing tailings, high grade fibre suitable for use in asbestos cement products. The process has been developed through microscopic studies, labora- tory bench scale experiments, work in a small scale semi-continuous plant and product evalua- tion on experimental size Hatschek asbestos cement machines. A prototype mill with a normal feed rate of 1z tonnes per hour and capable of producing pipe grade asbestos from Woodsreef ore has been constructed and was operational from January, 1982 to July, 1983. A range of asbestos cement products have been made successfully on full scale Hatschek machines using fibre from ore and tailings milled in the prototype mill. Economic evaluations indicate that a wet process mill would be cheaper to build, operate and maintain than an equivalent dry process plant. A commercial plant has been designed 1.
