A century ago, new mines were often accompanied by smelters. In Australia, smelters were built at the Daydream mine near Broken Hill, at Kuridala and Mount Elliott near Mount Isa, Broken Hill, Mount Lyell, Mount Morgan, Mount Isa, and more recently at Tennant Creek, Kalgoorlie and Olympic Dam. Now the big miners eschew site-based processing in favour of shipping concentrate to smelters in Europe and Asia. As Chip Goodyear was in the process of vacating his leadership role at BHP Billiton, he was quoted as saying that BHP should concentrate on mining ore and leave æto others the skill set of processing that materialÆ. Yet there are times when on-site processing clearly makes sense. Few companies ship gold ore or concentrate to China for gold extraction. New smelters are being built in Zambia. Solvent-extraction and electrowinning plants frequently produce copper from oxide ores and concentrates while pressure leaching is increasingly being considered for copper sulfide ores. Some argue that on-site processing is best because the waste products can be returned to the ground from whence they came, avoiding potentially large disposal costs in more-populated areas. Copper treatment and refining charges will not remain at $45 per tonne and 4.5 cents per pound forever. This paper examines when it makes sense to use on-site pyro- or hydrometallurgical processes in todayÆs environment and comments on how current trends might alter the balance in future.

THIS mine, which is the property of the S. and M. Syndicate, London, is located at Moina, in North-West Tasmania, 18 miles from Stavertorr railway station and 36 miles from Devonport. There are metalled roads from both of these places, and, althoughhilly, these are good for team or motor traffic. Mails and passengers are provided for by a tri-weekly coach service from Sheffield, a railway town, distant 23 miles. The Moina mining field is situated on a main spur between the Forth and Iris Rivers, andat an elevation ranging from about 500 ft. above sea-level at the Forth River to 2400 ft. at the All Nations mine. The elevation at the mine office of the S. and M. mine is 1900 ft. The average annual rainfall, as recorded for the past eight years, is. 68 in.This inclildes, however, a couple of years during which the rainfall was much above normal, and taken over a longer period 60 in. would be nearer the average.

Dartbrook mine is a new greenfields thermal coal longwall mine located n the Upper Hunter Valley ten kilometres north of Muswellbrook Figure 1). Construction began in April 1993 with coal extraction starting n October 1994. Longwall production is scheduled to commence in the first quarter of 1996 with production expected to exceed 3.5 million onnes per annum. The permanent workforce will number 150 full-time ,mployees and productivity rates will be 22 000 per employee per annum m a ROM basis. Being a greenfield site Dartbrook has had the opportunity to develop and operate the mine using the best practices and latest technology available to meet high standards of safety, quality and production.

The ores described in this paper are from the two principal orebodies at Wiseman's Creek, a small village about 22 miles south-east of Bathurst in central-western New South Wales.The first official reference to mining at Wiseman's Creek is in "Mineral Statistics of New South Wales" of 1875, which reported that the Wiseman's Creek Copper Mining Company had proved a lode-later known as "North Wiseman's"-to a depth of 120 ft., where it was found to be 20 ft. wide. By 1876 the erection of a mill and smelting works had commenced, and the sulphide ore found to contain copper lead, zinc, silver and gold. Some oxidised ore was also being worked. Operations were, however, generally unsuccessful, and sporadic work up until 1907 produced only about 5,000 tons of ore. The other more important orebody of the locality-the Phoenix-was not opened until about 1895. By 1908, as reported by J. E. Carne, the shaft had been sunk 340 ft., with the extraction of both oxidised and primary ore. At the time of the slump in copper, pric'es in 1907 approximately 3,000 tons of, ore had been produced.Several smaller orebodies were discovered and worked during the same period as the North Wiseman's and Phoenix, but their output was more or less insignficant. THE OREBODIES AND THEIR GEOLOGICAL SETTINGIt is now impossible to examine the orebodies underground, but they appear to have formed a series of flat lenses, whose major axes were parallel to ,the foliation of the enclosing quartz-chlorite-muscovite schists. The largest ,of these lenses was worked as the North Wiseman's orebody, which was reported by Carne to vary in width from 1 ft. to 20 ft., and which probably extended discontinuously over a strike length of about 1,000 ft. The Phoenix orebody is stated to have varied from 1 ft. 6 in. to 3 ft. in width...

Education has always been a topic to rouse the interest of mining and metallurgical engineers, but the recent activities of the Education Committee of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy 1, 2, together with the moves throughout the Commonwealth to extend the field of technological education, have made the subject a very live one at the present time. The authors have felt it would be appropriate that on the occasion of the First Ordinary Meeting for 1950, in Victoria, some contribution should be forthcoming concerning the history, present status and possible future trends of mining and metallurgical education in this State. As for the past, the time approaches when there will be none having personal recollections of the beginning of Victorian mining schools or of the men who started them. As for the future, it is obvious that rapidly expanding metal-producing and metalconsuming industries will demand a greater output of competent graduates and diplomates. The era immediately ahead seems to be bristling with opportunities, but mining educators need to temper their enthusiasm for various policies and programmes with the realisation that they are helping to train men who will be leaders 15-20 years hence when the problems of industry and trials of life generally may be very different from what they are to-day.

Emulsion explosives are a common industrial explosive and have a non-ideal detonation behaviour. The detonation performance for a given product changes with the charge diameter, ground conditions, con?nement and density. The burning process of an emulsion explosive has been modelled with an ignition and growth model in the LS-DYNA code. The parameters in the burning rate function are calibrated by the detonation velocities and the detonation front curvature radii from emulsion explosive tests. A Perl program was developed for an efficient estimation of the parameters, and the results show that the calibrated parameters can predict both detonation velocities and the detonation front curvatures.CITATION:Yi, C, Nyberg, U and Johansson, D, 2015. Interest in industrial minerals in recent years has increased to such an extent that it has taken them into the mainstream of the Australian mineral industry. Notwithstanding that time series data on the values of production, exports, and imports show that industrial minerals are overshadowed by metals and energy minerals, their contribution to the national economy is important and more significant than would seem to be indicated by the statistics. Whereas the ex mine value of metals generally includes some processing (at least to a concentrate stage), most industrial minerals are valued at little more than their extraction cost, in addition to which such costs are generally low because most industrial minerals are exploited in low-cost surface operations. Consequently, values of mine production of metals and industrial minerals are not strictly comparable in that values of mine production of metals tend to be overstated Short term growth of the industrial minerals sector is assured because of several new projects already commissioned but not yet reflected in the statistics. Longer term growth is also assured, based on various other major projects that are likely to come on stream in the early to mid 1990s.

The significance of blasthole stemming in determining blasting efficiency has been extensively studied for small diameter holes using gelignite explosives. Recent developments in blasting technology with the use of large diameter holes and low cost blasting agents have not included studies of the effectiveness of different types of stemming materials. A review of previous measurement techniques and the relevance of these earlier results to present stemming practice is presented in this paper. A survey of operating mines in Australia provided information for this analysis. The value of stemming in reducing blast noise and improving blasting efficiency is generally accepted but the use of bulk-loaded explosives in underground operations has resulted in the practice of eliminating the use of stemming material.In surface operations drill cuttings are used for stemming on the basis of availability rather than efficiency in providing resistance to movement. The development of laboratory testing techniques, based on noise level and borehole pressure measurements, to evaluate the relative efficiency of different types of stemming materials is described. The results of an extensive series of tests with ANFO explosive showed similar trends tothose obtained from earlier published results with gelignite type explosives. Conclusive quantitative results on the relative effectiveness of different stemming materials will require minor modifications to the existingequipment. Observations and the results of pressure measurements indicated the presence of shock wave effects which caused the ejection of the top section of the stemming column when using coarsely fragmented material.

"Sheeted vein gold deposits are characterised by multiple subparallel veins and free milling gold. In situ heterogeneity of mineralisation results in grade and process parameter variability, which will increase project risk. Measured variability is often enhanced by poorly designed sampling and test work protocols. Protocols that are optimised within the framework of the theory of sampling to suit the ore type, together with quality assurance/quality control systems, will reduce variability and provide fit-for-purpose results. The geometallurgical approach requires spatially distributed samples within a deposit to support variability modelling. Diverse attributes from core logging, mineralogical/textural determination and small-scale tests are used to measure variability. This contribution emphasises early stage geometallurgical intervention during project development. It presents a discussion of representative sampling in the context of the theory of sampling. This paper summarises the information about current state of eco-environmental problems, geological disaster and mining waste causing during the process of limestone mining. By comparing the management experiences of limestone mines in other countries, management problems in China have been discussed and improved management options have been proposed here. The AGL Loy Yang Mine is one of the largest and most significant coalmines in Australia. Commencing in 1982, this mine produces 30–35 Mt/a to supply more than 50 per cent of Victoria’s electrical power requirements. At this mine there are unique geotechnical challenges to overcome to ensure its safe operation including: significant mine depth, low density of coal in the operating and permanent mine batters, the influence of groundwater and deep sediment aquifer pressures. One of the challenges is the behaviour of brown coal, which is neither a soil nor a rock and displays long-term creep stress relief. Other geotechnical challenges include ensuring stability in high unconsolidated dumps, potential large-scale block movement in mine batters driven by crack water pressure and heave from high-pressure aquifers.The paper will outline the geological and hydrogeological setting and potential failure mechanisms, and detail an integrated geographic information system and reporting regime that in part addresses ground control management at the mine. The R70 test is a good indicator of coal reactivity to oxygen and is commonly used to provide a rating of propensity for self-heating. Tests performed by The University of Queensland Spontaneous Combustion Testing Laboratory have resulted in the development of a large database that shows the impact of coal quality on this parameter. From these results it is possible to infer an R70 value, which can be used to gain an appreciation of the intrinsic coal reactivity before it is even tested. However, any interpretation of R70 values must consider the influences of coal rank, mineral matter and moisture content to provide a better understanding of the spontaneous combustion risk of a particular coal.

In the first 20 years of the 21st century, just over 20 per cent of Australian mineral exploration expenditure was dedicated to iron ore, totalling >A$8 billion and >30 million metres of drilling (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2021). Improvements in the cost, efficiency, safety, reliability and data quality of drilling have the potential to deliver significant productivity improvements, increasing the probability of discovery and reducing the time from discovery to mining. Currently in its third year of research, Mineral Exploration Cooperative Research Centre (MinEx CRC) is focused on a new set of exploration tools and new ways to deploy those tools which recognise the fundamental importance of collecting quantity and quality data from the subsurface, to enable exploration success for all minerals, including iron ore. MinEx CRC is focused on developing more productive, safer and environmentally friendly drilling methods to discover and drill-out deposits. This includes pioneering work on Coil Tube (CT) drilling technology and innovations in Diamond and Reverse Circulation (RC) drilling techniques aimed at improved drilling optimisation and automation. In parallel, MinEx is developing new technologies for collecting data whilst drilling. This is being undertaken in four separate industry-led projects utilising geophysical, seismic, downhole analytical and 3-dimensional (3D) modelling improvements. A National Drilling Initiative (NDI) is also underway, with two drilling programs completed in 2020. The NDI is a world-first collaboration of Geological Surveys, researchers and industry, which undertakes drilling in under-explored areas of potential mineral wealth in Australia and provides a test-bed for new mineral exploration technologies.

General recognition of the potential benefits of utilizing advanced technology has focussed public attention on the organisation of tertiary education. This has produced a situation where opportunities exist for significant changes to be implemented. The challenges to Mining education in this environment of change are analysed with respect to the setting of education objectives, the role of centres of education, course structures and student access to courses. The scope of the analysis includes formal courses for professional education and technical training, and programmes for continuing education and postgraduate research. Previous significant advances in mining technology illustrate the importance of encouraging the establishment of an extensive involvement with mining education. Education cannot be the sole responsibility of professional academic organizations; significant industry participation is essential. Methods of achieving this interaction are discussed. Major changes in techniques available for disseminating information provide a significant incentive to assess the relevance of existing course structures and restrictions on student access to courses. Establishment of a less rigidly progressive system of education is discussed with respect to the development of the full potential of computer based learning. This will expand the availability of mining education to include remote locations. The practical feasibility of such changes and recognition of the value of education as a commercial resource could also increase overseas involvement in Australian mining education. Benefits of such changes and problems that may develop if accreditation systems are not also changed to take account of new technology are outlined.

Mineral resources all over the world are often heterogeneous and have variable ore properties and ore grade. As a result the ore processed in concentrating plants varies over the life of mines. Consequently the circuits often suffer from bottlenecks typically at the stages of crushing, semi-autogeneous (SAG) and ball milling. Bottlenecks may be remedied with equipment retrofits, however, design engineers should consider a phased approach to the circuit design that delays initial capital expenditure over the life-of-mine. This paper deals with the debottlenecking of existing mineral processing plants by means of high pressure grinding roll (HPGR) applications. It also deals with the use of innovative flow sheet designs using HPGRs for the design of Greenfield plants by engineering or mining companies. In the case of Greenfield plant design an analysis with respect to energy efficiency and operating cost (OPEX) is presented. The analysis compares the performance of SAG based circuits against HPGR circuits that may be influenced by variable ore properties. Globally about 600 HPGRs are installed in various applications in the cement and minerals industries. In excess of 100 of these HPGRs are used since the mid 1980s for crushing and grinding of various ore types including æhard rockÆ applications. HPGR technology is mature enough to be considered as an ideal debottlenecking device. HPGRÆs are versatile, they have a low installation footprint and they are flexible in its machine settings (pressure, roll speed), which can be adjusted to react to ore variations whilst maintaining a high throughput. Examples for the benefits of using HPGR in terms of energy efficiency and operating costs are presented by this paper. æEco-efficientÆ flow sheets and sustainable development initiatives are linked to energy savings as an æenergy costÆ and benefit to the environment. Energy savingsÆ can also be analysed in terms of the ædollar costÆ (OPEX) savings. This paper demonstrates that HPGR is more energy efficient and may reduce the overall grinding energy requirements in the order of 16 per cent depending on the target grind size and ore properties. The HPGR is more cost efficient and may reduce overall grinding costs by as much as 19.3 per cent depending on the cost of energy, grinding media and the rate of grinding media wear in the comminution circuit.

Studies of the Main Seam in the Rapahoe Sector of Greymouth Coalfield have shown that the proportions of palynomorphs and palynomorph groups vary vertically within the seam, but remain laterally consistent. Subsequent examinations of other seams in the Rapahoe Sector have demonstrated that the changes in palynomorph proportions observed in the Main Seam are specific to that seam, effectively providing a seam 'fingerprint'. Such a characteristic signature may be used to identify the Main Seam where faulting or seam splitting confuses seam correlation between drillhole intersections. Palynomorph assemblages are derived from the original plants which formed the peat mire, and yield information on mire conditions such as climate, mineral matter input and chemistry. These depositional factors influence coal properties such as mineral content, volatile matter yields and coal breakability. Palynological data can therefore assist in development of depositional lTIodels for prediction of coal quality variations. Several other, thiner seams in the Rapahoe Sector have been demonstrated to also contain recognisable palynomorph assemblages, suggesting that other seams may also possess distinct palynomorph abundance profiles.

Cliffs Natural Resources Pty Ltd (Cliffs) operates iron ore mines in the Koolyanobbing region of Western Australia. Ore is mined from three separate hubs and trucked to Koolyanobbing. There it is crushed and screened to lump and fines finished products and railed to Esperance port for export to Asian customers. Cliffs is renowned in the marketplace for its consistent product quality. In 2010, 9 Mt of ore was exported to Asia.Over the last three years, Cliffs has systematically refurbished its product quality system (PQS), to improve efficiency of production while maintaining its high standard of product quality. Particular attention has been given to reducing inventory, which has required significant modifications to the production process design.In redesigning the production process, emphasis was placed on maximising the application of the inherent blending in each of the production process steps and dedicated blending was only introduced where essential. Simulation modelling and statistical analysis of process capabilities were utilised to develop a system that optimises inventory, minimises rehandle, eliminates several decision-making steps and maintains a pull focus throughout the value chain.The new planning functions are now fully integrated and effectively control long-term grade variability rather than relying on long-term stockpiling. The production process design and the daily crusher blend plan are used to control short-term grade variability. With the upgrading of the planning processes the accuracy and consistency of algorithms for lump per cent and lump and fi nes grades became more important and an increased geometallurgical function has been added to the company.The continuous stockpile management system was upgraded to increase the effectiveness of the daily crusher blend planning process and is now the sole intervention point in the production process for grade-based decisions. Grade control systems were modified to utilise advances in software and geostatistics to deliver accurate short range planning models. The reconciliation and sampling systems have also been refurbished with an emphasis on practical application and feedback loops.Accountability and transparency are provided by management reports that are generated from a centralised data warehouse and the introduction of a corrective action system. Standardised reports are available to all stakeholders and a quarterly KPI scorecard assists the management review process.The successful rejuvenation of the PQS has culminated in operational efficiency through the implementation of an integrated end-to-end process flow. Shareholder value is maximised through maximising recovery of the resource and minimising costs. Customer focus is maintained by reliably delivering product with acceptable and low grade variability.

Mine ventilation is an essential part of underground mining operations used to provide fresh and cool air, as well as to dilute and remove contaminants from the work environment. This paper presents an overview of the ventilation and gas management systems in one of the underground coalmines in Iran: Parvadeh_1 mine. The mine is located in the Tabas coalfield in the South Khorasan province. It is the only fully mechanised mine in Iran utilising the longwall retreat technique. The mine produces 1.1 to 1.3 Mt of coking coal annually. The mine ventilation system currently utilises two 630 kW exhaust surface fans. The gas management system includes surface to in seam (SIS) predrainage boreholes. The underground mine is equipped with an underground gas reticulation pipeline that is connected to a surface plant for the production of methane gas. The Century zinc-lead-silver deposit has a geological resource of 118 million tonnes averaging 10.2% zinc, 1.5% lead and 36 g/t silver. It lies approximately 250 krn NNW of Mt Isa in NW Queensland, Australia, and is hosted by middle Proterozoic age siltstones and shales of the Lawn Hill Formation. Within the orebody, most mineralisation occurs selectively within black shale units as fine grained sphalerite and galena lamellae with minor pyrite and siderite. The black shale units are separated by weakly mineralised sideritic siltstone horizons. The deposit is unmetamorphosed and only weakly deformed, displaying excellent lateral stratigraphic and grade continuity. The deposit is mostly overlain by younger Proterozoic sediments and later Cambrian age limestone cover and only a small proportion of the mineralisation crops out. Mineralisation has a subtle surface expression without a classic gossan profile, probably due to the low iron sulphide content of the ore. These factors contributed materially to the length of time between the first recognition of lead-zinc-silver mineralisation in the area by prospectors in the 1880s, to the discovery of the orebody by CRA Exploration Pty Ltd (CRAE) in April 1990.   Small scale prospecting and mining continued in the area from the date of the first mining lease in 1887. Post 1950, the deposit area was also included within nine separate regional exploration titles prior to CRAE's title acquisition in 1987. CRAE's original exploration strategy was partly pragmatically and partly conceptually inspired, but the eventual discovery only partly conformed to the original conceptual model. The deposit was found higher in the stratigraphy than the original target position, with unexpectedly low total sulphide content relative to other known deposits.   The discovery soil anomaly was located by the CRAE's first regional orientation traverse line in the area, but was not drill tested for three years. The discovery sequence at Century has strong elements of persistence, technical competence and some luck. It demonstrates that even in well explored terrains (by conventional standards) the exploration story can never be said to be over. The foreshadowed development of an economic resource at Century will hopefully inspire continued commitment to 'brownfields' exploration by mining companies, and demonstrate to external regulators the importance of genuine multiple land use strategies and the need for continued access to land for exploration and mining purposes.

Suddenly, mining has been thrust into the limelight. It has a large image that casts its shadow over New Zealand. Is it any wonder that resistance has heightened and that an almost unprepared populous is currently struggling to protect the very land they hold dear. Next to the atomic bomb, mining has the demonstrated power to massively change the land and its side effects can pollute many miles beyond the operation. During the past year, New Zealand concern over the possible effects of the mining proposals has become acute. This was specially so in the areas of special environmental quality, such as the Coromandel, and here a very unhappy situation has arisen.
