Quite often the reserve assessor becomes enamored with the numbers gen- erated and forgets the basis for his assessment. The quality of the assess- ment can only be as good as the quality of the input data. The use of seismic data from the Gippsland Basin in assess- ing Esso/BHP's oil and gas reserves is an excellent example of this principle. By significantly improving the quality of seismic data, a much more reliable estimate of a field's reserve potential can be made. In addition, it provides the basis for further delineation drill- ing which, as recent experience in Gippsland has shown, often leads to increased reserves.

The Northland region of New Zealand has a complex geological history which has long been the subject of considerable controversy. Small mineral deposits have been discovered in the past, and some have been mined. Except for aggregates and very high quality china clay, mining is virtually nonexistent at present. Mercury mining is proposed from small deposits in the Kaeo area. Intensive exploration for epithermal precious metals deposits in the past seven years, combined with some recent geological mapping undertaken by the Geological Survey and University thesis students has added greatly to an understanding of Northland's geology. Mapping of the Whangaroa-Kaikohe map sheet at a scale of 1:100 000 by Brown and Laurenson Limited has enabled new geological information to be collated for the first time since 1961, when the last geological map was published. The 'Northland Allochthon' is now observed to be a series of four or more thrust sheets each containing predictable formations. High angle faulting contemporaneous with overthrusting has modified the thrust sheets, and established a series of horsts and grabens. The Pirau Fault is considered to be a major earth fracture.

There are a number of factors affecting the discovery and develop- ment of uranium in Australia which makes this mineral almost unique and quite different from other minerals. I. The role of the Australian Government, which initially encouraged the discovery by offering rewards to prospectors who discovered deposits that could become economic. 2. At a later stage, the Commonwealth and South Australian Govern- ments prevented the development and production of "new mines" by refusing to grant mining title and refusing to allow sales of uranium by not issuing export permits. 3. The unique property that uranium and its daughter products possessed, i.e. radioactivity, meant that any person who purchased a geiger coun- ter could go prospecting, even though they had no previous experience in prospecting and they had an equal opportunity of discovering a new deposit as a company or independent geologist. 4. Because the exploration/demand for uranium didn't occur until the 1940s very little background geological information or models were available and so the early discoveries tended to become the locus for exploration rather than moving into areas which might on geological concepts lead to exploration programmes based on geological models. Because of the lack of knowledge there was the exchange of geologists from the U.S. Geological Survey and the South Australia Geologist Survey.

CPeX is a non-ideal explosive performance prediction model. The model takes into account the rate of energy release, the extent of chemical reac- tion and the effect of confinement on energy release. The model resolves the explosive energy into `shock' and `heave' com- ponents as a function of explosive type, hole diameter and rock type. The predictions of the model are compared for a bulk emulsion, and a prill-doped bulk emulsion in soft rock. The predictions, based on calibra- tion of the model with simple unconfined detonation velocity measure- ments, show the significant effect of non-ideality on explosive Performance.

THE successful establishment of iron blast-furnace plants at Newcastle and Lithgow naturally invites attention to the economic utilization of the various products and by-products arising out of the industry.The general similarity in composition between Portland cement and iron blast-furnace slag very early attracted attention both in, the cement and iron-smelting industries. Probably the first use made of blast-furnace slag in the cementindustry was not of an honourable nature-viz, to use an almost worthless and cumbersome by-product as a not readily detectable adulterant in Portland cement, which was at that time very costly to manufacture.The astonishing discovery was made that in many cases the adulterated cement was stronger than the original unadulterated article. It was found that chilled blast-furnace slag introduced in moderate quantity and finely ground with the cement clinkerdid not injure, but usually improved, the quality of the resulting cement. This mode of, manufacture is recognized, especially in Germany, as a legitimate branch of the cement making industry.The use of slag for the manufacture of both slag cement and Portland cement has assumed very large proportions heth in USA and Europe so much so that in the former country plants not well situated and equipped for cheaply making cement from clay and limestone are being forced to close down. Slags from other than iron blast-furnaces, together with some of the latter, are not suitable for cement-making. The Emeishan large igneous province (ELIP) of SW China is host to magmatic Ni–Cu–(PGE) sulfide and Fe–Ti–V oxide deposits which contain economic to subeconomic concentrations of precious and base metals. The formation of a given deposit-type (ie sulfide versus oxide) is thought to be related to the type of parental magma (ie high-Ti versus low-Ti) and the subsequent processes (ie fractional crystallisation and sulfide segregation), which allowed for metal enrichment.We examined the PGE of Baima and Taihe oxide-bearing layered mafic intrusions from the ELIP (Shellnutt, Ma and Qi, in press), and compared them with the nearby Xinjie and Hongge intrusions as well as with the Emeishan flood basalts. The PGE results for the two intrusions are contrasting. The Baima gabbroic rocks are almost PGE-barren (SPGE < 4 ppb) whereas the Taihe gabbroic rocks are variable, but generally much higher in PGE concentrations (SPGE < 2 to ~300 ppb), although the gabbros from both intrusions are enriched in platinum-subgroup PGE (PPGE = Rh, Pt and Pd) relative to iridium-subgroup PGE (IPGE = Os, Ir and Ru). Cu/Zr, Ni/Ir, Y/Pt, Cu/Pd and Ni/Ir systematics suggest that the Baima rocks were derived from a relatively evolved, mafic, S-undersaturated parental magma that was affected by earlier sulfide segregation. In contrast, the Taihe rocks record evidence of both S-saturated and S-undersaturated conditions and that the parental magma was likely emplaced very close to S-saturation. Through comparison of the PGE contents in the Emeishan flood basalts and the Emeishan oxide-bearing intrusions, we provide a self-consistent model for ELIP that the PGE budget in a magma is not strictly controlled by magma series (high-Ti versus low-Ti), but very much by crustal contamination.CITATION:Ma, G, Shellnutt, J G and Qi, L, 2015. The study presented in this paper is based on the Kiirunavaara underground mine located in the northern part of Sweden. The deposit is mined using the sublevel caving (SLC) mining method. This paper briefly reviews the alternative SLC layouts, as well as presents challenges for the application. In Kiirunavaara currently, the traditional SLC design is employed, however, continuous improvement of material transportation systems used in mines generates a need for investigation of the current and future production area layouts in sublevel caving mines. When identifying the potential benefits of the alternative production area layouts, the production targets and effects must be further investigated to understand the benefits and potential effects. In this study, several different layouts have been investigated and evaluated. The designs include different development configurations and orepass infrastructure moved further away from the orebody and still require further investigation.

X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is a widely accepted technique for the elemental analysis of iron ores and their concentrates. Wavelength-dispersive, or WDXRF, and energy-dispersive, or EDXRF, spectrometers offer distinct advantages for particular applications, elements and concentration ranges and are, therefore, more complimentary than people might realise. A key example is the ability of EDXRF to identify, and often quantify, unexpected elements in production samples that would typically be missed by routine WDXRF. In this paper we discuss recent technological advances in XRF and present a novel application example that demonstrates the additional technical and practical benefits of using both EDXRF and WDXRF to characterise iron ores and concentrates.CITATION:Tsouris, C, Komelkov, A and Rayner, M, 2015. The Barmac autogenous crushing mill is one of the most successful new comminution technologies to become available to the mining and industrial minerals industries in this decade.   The Barmac autogenous crushing mill is an innovative Vertical Shaft Impactor which operates in essence like a high intensity dry ore centrifugal pump with the reduction occurring primarily as a result of high velocity rock to rock impact in a fully rock lined crushing chamber.   With applications in a wide range of mining and industrial minerals operations the Barmac autogenous crushing mill presents an opportunity to enhance reduction and liberation whilst providing many cost savings and production increases in new and existing plants.   This paper briefly describes the operation of the Barmac autogenous crushing mill and reviews its benefits.

Enterprise Mine at Mount Isa is to expand ore production from the current 1.4 to 3.5 mtpa by mining the 3500 Orebody, from which production is scheduled to start in February 1998 making this the deepest underground mine in Australia with its lowest mining horizon at nearly 1.6 km below surface. The following fill requirements were defined for the 3500 Orebody during the feasibility study: a minimum filling rate of 250 m3/h, a curing time of 28 days, and minimum free fill water. This paper mainly describes the investigation of high density and paste fills for the 3500 Orebody. The investigation covered all the key issues relating to fill option selection, including design criteria, material supply and demand assessment, drainage modelling, tailing dewatering method, mix design and a pump loop test. Results of the investigation indicate that both high density fill and paste fill are technically feasible. The investigation has led to the selection of a blended tailing paste for the 3500 Orebody as the paste option has significant advantages over high density fill in stope filling rates and fill reticulation. The blended tailing for paste fill is finer than Isa deslimed tailing but coarser than full plant tailing. The paste fill selected has minimum binder and tailing dewatering requirements while a relatively high filling rate is achieved.

Experiments were conducted to access the feasibility of removing zinc from lead slag by sulfation or chlorination or both. Gaseous sulfation with sulfur dioxide and oxygen released only 50 per cent of zinc even under the most severe conditions. Sulfation with concentrated sulfuric acid by a fast-leach process released 95 per cent of zinc while pug-roasting released a maximum of 78 per cent of zinc. Chloridization with NaCl in the presence of sulfating gas released 50 per cent of zinc, while direct chlorination with chlorine gas and oxygen released 85 per cent of zinc and 100 per cent of lead in a chloride condensate containing little impurities.

Henry Walker Eltin (HWE) are the mining contractors for Gloucester Coal at Stratford mine, which is in an environmentally sensitive area in the Avon Valley, NSW, Australia. Normal blasting at Stratford is done in a æstand upÆ or æbox cutÆ mode to suit the truck and shovel operations. Recently an opportunity of doing a throw blast became available when part of a ramp had to be blasted to accommodate changes to the pit design while not damaging the remainder of the ramp. The objective was to maximise throw into the void in order to minimise excavation costs by reducing the amount of overburden to be moved by the excavation fleet. It was necessary that the best result be achieved while staying within the vibration and airblast limits at a neighbouring property and nearby township. Both objectives were achieved through the application of OricaÆs knowledge of blast design, modelling and i-konTM electronic detonators. The i-kon system was used because of its known benefits in cast blasting and environmental control. The i-kon system provides the blaster with much greater accuracy, control and the flexibility to tailor blast designs. It has been found previously to enhance blast throw and provide cleaner high walls (Brent, 2002). The blast was a success, producing a muckpile with a high degree of looseness and consistent fragmentation, with an average throw to final spoil position of 37.5 per cent. This was achieved without any environmental exceedance. In addition, high speed filming showed that the coal edge had remained largely in place, indicating minimal coal loss. The results exceeded the expectations of HWE Stratford and the overall cost savings to HWE Stratford from this blast were recognised to be substantial. Further throw blasting opportunities at Stratford have been followed using the i-kon system to maximise benefits.

The torsion test is considered as the best test used when the part is subjected to static or dynamic torque. Many published papers have investigated the torsion of non-heat treated metals. However, very few published papers dealt with the torsion behaviour of heat treated metals. The aim of this work was to study the effect of heat treatment on the torsion behaviour of steel alloy (AISI 01), which can be used for manufacturing small and medium drills, taps and reamers. The diameter of specimens used was 15 mm. The metal used was heat treated under different conditions, then torsionally tested. The results of torsion test were divided into two groups: results obtained during elastic limit from which the shear stress, shear strain and modulus of rigidity were calculated, while from the results obtained during plastic limit the plastic depth was calculated by applying derived equation when the angle of twist was more than yield value. The results obtained indicated that the value of hardness alone is not sufficient to establish heat treatment conditions. Rather, it was found that the determination of plastic depth together with hardness can help in the establishing of the optimum condition which was hardening temperature of 820¦C, hardening time 20 minutes and tempering temperature 220¦C. This condition produces hardness of 60 HRc and plastic depth of 2.5 mm.

The Perseverance deposit is the most southerly known economic copper/gold deposit within the Cobar gold field. The deposit is situated approximately 12 km to the south-southeast of Cobar and is essentially blind to surface with the top of economic mineralisation occurring 750 m below ground level.Based on the December 2010 resource estimate (inclusive of reserves and net of depletion) the deposit contains 3 011 000 tonnes at 6.1 g/t Au and 0.90 per cent Cu (590 000 oz of gold and 28 000 tonnes of copper). The deposit is comprised of four principal lenses, the Perseverance, Hulk, Zone B, and Hercules lenses. In excess of 90 per cent of the known resource tonnes are contained within the Perseverance and Hulk lenses. The deposit is shear related and hosted within lower Devonian rocks of the Cobar Basin. The competency contrast of rhyolites juxtaposed against sediments by the Peak-Perseverance shear is the principal control on mineralisation. Both the Perseverance and Hulk lenses are primarily hosted by brecciated rhyolites juxtaposed against Chesney formation sediments across the Peak-Perseverance shear. This faulted rhyolite sediment contact roughly defines the global orientation of the deposit. The Perseverance lens continues within the shear for up to several hundred metres beyond the extent of the faulted rhyolite sediment contact. Mineralisation within the shear beyond the faulted rhyolite contact zone is hosted by sheared silicified sediments. The Perseverance lens remains open at depth and to the south.The Zone B and Hercules lenses, which are significantly less important in tonnage terms, are hosted by rhyolite breccias within the main body of the rhyolite and appear to be only tenuously related to the Peak-Perseverance shear. Within the Perseverance lens, the presence of northeast trending high grade breccia veins developed oblique to the north-south trending shear system has led to the development of steeply north plunging high grade ore shoots within a globally north-south trending mineralised domain. These high grade shoots have limited horizontal continuity but significant down plunge extent.The presence of coarse gold and the resulting strongly skewed nature of the gold grades, in conjunction with controls on mineralisation which are not parallel to the mineralised domain, has led to predictive difficulties regarding stope performance.Strong heterogeneity of the gold content of the ore and geological controls on mineralisation which are not parallel to the global trend of the mineralisation impose a set of difficulties which sound geological control is helping overcome.

Timestudy analysis of mining operations at North Broken Hill Limited has been carried out by dissecting operations into small elemental components, and accurately timing these elements. Over a wide range of observations, this has enabled standard time values to be calculated for all underground work.The application of the standard values is in calculating performances as a measure of work output and Performance Controls are kept on approximately two-thirds of underground employees. Through the Controls it has been possible to stimulate supervisory action to improve low performance, and to reduce delays and lost time.The values are used to calculate contract" prices, and anomalies in previous prices have been adjusted on work values and not on arbitrary standards. In out-of-the-ordinary circumstances, the request for a timestudy investigation has been made by both operatives and foremen, and the contract set following the timestudy analysis has been to the satisfaction of both parties.The range of values enables contracts to be applied to work which was previously performed on a day basis, resulting in improved performance.A natural corollary of timestudy is the analysis of methods, and in some cases method improvements have been introduced.It is anticipated that further investigations will be made on methods.INTRODUCTIONIn 1953, a Timestudy analysis of mining operations at North Broken Hill Limited was commenced under the guidance of management consultants. Its aim was, to determine standard time values for specific operations, which would provide management with a measure of productivity beyond the existing measures of tons or feet of advance, and also to determine whether increased output was available under existing operating conditions.

Telfer Gold Mine combines a world-class gold and copper resource and longevity of operation as a major gold and copper producer. Telfer Gold Mine has undergone a series of transformations since mining commenced as a high-grade narrow-vein oxide open pit operation in 1977. In 1986, the open pit operation converted from a narrow-vein, high-grade operation, to a low-grade high-volume oxide mining operation utilising dump leach processing technology. Mechanised underground mining of the high-grade narrow-veins commenced in 1990. Total recovered gold production between 1977 to 1999 has totalled 5.7 million ounces. The Telfer Extension Project consists of two pre-feasibility studies, the Surface Extension Project (SEP) and the I-Series Project (ISP). The combined studies represent one of the more significant resource evaluations undertaken in the gold industry in recent times. Geological activities for the SEP pre-feasibility study have included the drill definition of a large low-grade resource within an area of 25 km2 . The surface drilling program has completed 15 000 metres of HQ3 diamond drilling and over 30 000 metres of RC between last quarter of 1998 and late-1999. The ISP pre-feasibility study is currently evaluating the resource potential of both a high-grade low-volume and a lower grade bulk mining scenario, 800 m to 1200 m below the surface of Main Dome. 15 000 metres of underground diamond drilling have been completed between last quarter of 1998 and August 1999 as part of this study. Systems and cultures have been developed to maximise safety, monitor the quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) on all aspects of the operation, and minimise impact on the environment. All data are stored in database systems, specifically designed for Telfer operations. 3D geostatistical resource estimation using ordinary kriging has been carried out for over 220 geological domains within the 25 km3 of mineralised system. Non-linear geostatistical techniques are being investigated as part of the pre-feasibility study.

Development of the process from the pilot stage to the current operation of the Capel, W.A. plant is briefly described. The design criteria for a larger sized plant are discussed together with factors that relate suitable feedstocks and coal types to the capital cost, capacity and product grade of future plants at locations other than Capel. The application of the process to the direct reduction of iron ores is briefly discussed including its commercial application at Rockwood, Tennessee.

This paper presents a study about reopening of a quarry near to the geothermal region of Kntahya, Turkey. The production method was gallery blasting which resulted in very high ground vibrations. Therefore the quarry had been closed down by the local authorities about 12 years ago due to possible damages to the geothermal resources. In order to reopen the quarry, reserve estimation and production planning studies needs to be carried out as well as applying environmentally sensitive production method. The result of reserve estimation studies showed approximately 12.5 Mt reserve in the area. The market studies indicated that annual production of 600 000 tonnes could be sold. These results justify to reopen the quarry. In order to overcome environmental problems, bench blasting production method instead of gallery blasting has been planned. This method enables to design a drilling blasting pattern that will almost result in no ground vibrations.

The Maragorik Prospect represents a partially eroded Pliocene acid sulphate style epithermal gold system hosted within the Sigule Volcanics and Riet Bed sediments which is inferred to have formed from a degassing porphyry body at depth. A regional sinistral rotation provided by transform faults associated with the opening of the Manus Basin imparts a dilational character to mineralised NE trending faults formed parallel to the Warangoi Graben. A controlled-source audio magneto-tellurics (CSAMT) survey has identified E-W trending buried conductors which may represent alteration formed within dilation zones. While some gold mineralisation occurs within vuggy silica at Palang Hill, the target is auriferous enargite (luzonite)-bearing breccias from the LK1 and Gureki areas.

This modern plant was installed with the object of treating all oxide ore and payable dump material by the cyanide process.The plant is located on a ridge on the eastern side of Linda Gully. The mill -site has a slope to the south of 1 in 4.The new plant is of steel and concrete construction and was specially designed to suit the climatic conditions which exist at Mount Morgan.THE COARSE CRUSHING PLANTThe ore received from the, mine is dumped into a 600-ton steel bin which is commanded by a 3 ft. 6 in. gauge railway,The mine ore is conveyed by steam locomotives in rakes of five self-dumping 7-ton railroad cars. The dump material is mostly loaded by bull-dozers and conveyed to the binsin large motor lorries. Located on the top of the bin is a heavy railroad grizzly having 12-in openings through which all ore must pass.The flow of ore from this steel bin is controlled by a No. 7D 3-speed Ross chain feeder. It should be mentioned here that, although the bottom of the steel bin is inclined at an angle of 45°, it has been found, owing to the clayey nature of the oxide ore, that the live capacity of the bin is only about 50% of the total capacity.
