Gold was discovered in the Bendigo area of Victoria in 1851 (Willman and Wilkinson, 1993), and all the early gold mining of any note involved washing (puddling) the gold out of the regolith or alluvium. The waste material from this process was a semi-fluid mixture of rock debris, soil and water, referred to as `sludge'. Puddling machines were gradually introduced to speed up the puddling process (Cole, 1994), and by 1855 an estimated 2000 machines were in the district (Anderson, 1978). In 1859 it was estimated that approximately 2 293 000 m3 of material was puddled annually by the machines on the eastern side of the goldfield, whose waste drained into Bendigo Creek and its tributary gullies. It was also estimated that after the gold was removed, approximately one-quarter of the residue/sludge consisted of the heavier, coarse-grained material which settled out fairly quickly, while the remainder, approximately 1 720 000 m3, was the fine-grained material which flowed downstream for some distance (VPP, 1859 - 60). From these figures it can be assumed that for the ten years during which this volume of puddling was maintained (1854 - 1864) over 5 700 000 m3 of gravels and sands and 17 200 000 m3 of fine-grained sludge had been discharged into and around Bendigo Creek. This was enough to cover an area of over 400 km2 to a depth of 5 cm. By 1859 the problems associated with the sheer volume of sludge being discharged were such that a Royal Commission was appointed to `Enquire into the Best Method of Removing the Sludge from the Gold Fields' (VPP, 1859 - 60). The goldfields referred to were those in the Bendigo area around the township of Sandhurst (now known as Bendigo). The Report of the Commission (VPP, 1859 - 60) stated that: `... inspection of the country bordering upon the course of the Bendigo Creek, to a distance of about fifty miles from Sandhurst . . . ' had revealed that the sludge had ' . . . filled up watercourses and flooded pasture lands . . . '. It also noted that ' . . . even on the plains, thirty or forty miles away from Sandhurst, where the sludge flows thin, and is relieved from its heavier particles, we found it baked into a perfect concrete, and in thicknesses varying up to two feet or more . . . '. The italics were used for emphasis in the original text. As it was considered unlikely that the physical evidence for such widespread inundation would have disappeared completely over the intervening 130 or so years, a project was initiated to locate any evidence of the inundation in the current landscape. If such evidence were to be found, then an estimate could be made of both its extent and its effects on the topography, drainage, and land-use of the inundated area. Extensive field work has determined that over 700 km2 to the north of Bendigo was inundated by the sludge. The area has not been uniformly covered, but has occasional `inliers' which have obviously escaped inundation by being slightly higher than the surrounding areas. Today the sludge is readily identified as a very fine-grained, hard-setting, concrete-like `capping' overlying a well-developed, well-structured, pedal horizon, or in some instances, the gravels and sands of a creek bed. The classic description of Project Finance as "the reliance by lenders on the cashflow of a project, supported by the assets of the project with no recourse to the project sponsor's corporate balance sheet" has, like most other terms in the finance industry, evolved through recent usage. The area now under most scrutiny is the sharing of risks between parties either most able to take them or prepared to accept payment for them. Creativity in, and flexibility of financing structures have enabled project lending to continue under a dramatically different economic outlook. The diminishing competitiveness of the Australian producers in a global market place of uncertain commodity prices has discouraged the advancement of many large scale resource projects. The majority of new project financings has been designed to assist the relatively small company promote and develop its first projects. New trends- are emerging in four areas: sources of capital; borrowing structure; financing instruments (securitisation); and risk underpinning. As project financing becomes more widely used, the range of interested financiers grows. New initiatives contribute to its development and evolution with a view to increase effectiveness to the sponsor of any new venture.

BHP World Minerals (BHP) commenced development of the Cannington exploration decline in 1993 using Peabody Resources LimitedÆs Mining Services Division (PRL) as the contractor. Approval was given in 1996 to complete the mine development and bring the mine into production in 1997. The total mine development at Cannington by PRL has included 14 km of headings, 1040 m of shaft sinking for ventilation and ore hoisting and 990 m of raise boring for ore passes and vent rises. Hard money schedule of rates contracts were used for mine development from 1993 until early-1997. This took the mine development down to 570 m below the surface and developed six levels. Because of significant risks, the final phase of the mine development was completed in 1997 under a partnering agreement. This paper examines the factors considered in making the change to partnering, the issues involved in negotiating the partnering agreement to complete the Cannington mine development and the outcomes of the agreement.

The use of stable isotopic measurements as a technique for elucidating the origin and history of the water in hydrothermal fluids is relatively new. Recent studies have emphasized the importance of meteoric water in the formation of many hydrothermal ore deposits including many epithermal gold-base metal deposits which occur in faulted volcanic terrane. Other vein-type gold ores are be- lieved to have formed from fluids of magmatic or metamorphic origin and exhibit characteri stic 6180 values. These values also give information regarding temperatures and the degree of equilibrium. Preliminary oxygen data for some important gold deposits of eastern Australia are evaluated in the con- text of styles of mineralization.

Portland cement is the chief binding ingredient in mine backfill. In the presence of water, the chemical compounds within portland cement hydrate causing hardening and strength gain. During hydration, heat is generated. In certain cases, hydration heat may be produced significantly faster than it can be dissipated, which can create high temperatures in the underground environment. This paper presents the results of a series of investigations aimed at quantifying the heat generated by cemented backfill during hydration. Scaled stope models, instrumented with thermistors, were used in the investigation. Heat transfer to the hanging wall, orebody, footwall and cross-cut and production drifts was assessed during the backfill curing process and relationships between cement content, cure time, and heat generation were developed. The results of this work will assist mine operators in predicting the heat generated by cemented backfill and provide the necessary information to implement effective engineering control of heat in the underground environment.

Several classes of commercial explosives and blasting agents behave non-ideally, especially in diameters near their critical diameter. A direct and convenient measure of non-ideal behavior is the detonation velocity (VOD); if the VOD is less than the ideal value, usually obtained by calculation, then the explosive is detonating in the non-ideal mode. Such lowering of the VOD is usually due to both lateral loss of energy and post-CJ release of energy. The second of these factors, namely slow release of chemical energy, is of most interest in blasting. While the observation of a low VOD clearly suggests slow reaction of part of the explosive composition, it does not necessarily mean that the energy is lost to the overall rock-breaking process. The partition of the energy of the explosive into various useful and wasteful categories is considered. Simple models of energy partition in blasting, and of explosive reaction kinetics, are presented. The models consider the effect of explosive type and rock type, the explosive being described in terms of the most common phases namely liquid, air bubbles, porous ammonium nitrate, dense or crystalline ammonium nitrate, and aluminum. Over a range of combinations of the above phases, the model predicts reasonable critical diameters and VOD's. Results are presented which show the effects of non-ideal detonation on fragmentation and heave in different rock types. Conclusions are drawn about those blasting conditions in which ideal behavior is beneficial, or Disadvantageous.

In China the hydrogeological type of solid mineral deposits can be divided into A. Mineral deposits with fissure water; B. Mineral deposits with pore water; and C. Mineral deposits with karst water. The hydrogeological conditions of mineral deposits with fissure water are relatively simple with the exception of a few cases. Mineral deposits with pore water are few but great amounts of ground water can be encountered in the mine accompanied by floating sand or slope failure during the exploitation. Mineral deposits with karst water are complex in their hydrogeological conditions. Enormous inrushes occur frequently in the mines of north China; Karst collapses are a serious matter in the mines of the south; Subterranean river and conduit systems are often encountered in the southwest. This paper will give full discussion on these features and put forward a way of combating and controlling the groundwater problem in accordance with type and feature.

A laboratory size solvent extraction apparatus has been constructed, which incorp- orates three stages of countercurrent extraction, followed by two stages of counter- current stripping. The model uses a gravity flow system from one stage to another and air lift pumps to recirculate organic and aqueous phases. A novel pump/mixer system is used to transfer solutions from the mixer compartments to the settler compartments. The model has proven valuable in the teaching of solvent extraction principles.

The Bulli Coal Seam, located in the Illawarra Coalfield of New South Wales, has a long and varied history of sudden outbursts. From available information this problem has resulted in twelve fatalities over the last one hundred and one years, with over five hundred separate outburst incidents being identified. These incidents have varied in severity and intensity from the discharge of 1 to 2 tonne of coal, with a slight increase in gas emission, to the discharge of 200 to 400 tonne of coal with some 6,000 m3 of gas being liberated and large items of mining equipment being pushed 1 to 2 metres down the roadway.Geological features associated with these outbursts can be mapped on a regional and mine by mine basis, to provide some indication or warning. Similarly changes in gas content and gas composition can also be determined on a regional and mine by mine basis. However sudden geological changes (such as a 6.5 metre seam displacement within 15 metres) variations in gas content (such as 6 m3/tonne to 15 m3/tonne) and changes in gas composition (from 95% CH4 to 90% CO2) all within one mine does make the prediction or forecasting of outburst incidents exceedingly difficult.

Precious metals in the Rosebery north-end orebody occur predominantly in sphalerite- galena-pyrite ore and to a lesser extent in massive barite mineralisation. Gold may also occur in the upper parts of pyrite-chalcopyrite ore (although this ore type is usually gold poor), in pyritic mineralisation lateral to base metal sulphide lenses and in the footwall (very patchy). Although present, remobilised precious metals do not occur in economically significant quantities. Mineralogically, silver occurs dominantly in tetrahedrite and, to a lesser extent, argen- tiferous galena. Gold occurs as electrum associated dominantly with pyrite and, to a lesser extent, tetrahedrite. Geochemical modelling suggests that silver was probably transported as a chlorocomplex, while gold was transported dominantly as a thiocomplex, although at high temperature gold was transported as a chlorocomplex.

Selective oxidation of minerals was used in this study to separate by flotation the copper sulphide minerals of chalcocite, covellite and chalcopyrite from the arsenic copper sulphide minerals of enargite and tennantite. It was found that a satisfactory separation of these minerals was only possible after selective oxidation of their surfaces in slightly acidic pH conditions, or after oxidation and selective dissolution of the surface oxidation products with a complexant in basic pH conditions.

The management of waste from mining operations is a significant aspect of bringing a mineral commodity to final market. The ore beneficiation process and transport/disposal of waste involves significant consumption of costly resources. A number of options exist to dispose of mill waste on surface and as a backfill material. These range in complexity, risk, capital cost, operating cost and ultimately business performance. This paper discusses the value delivered to a business in using dewatering systems including paste as opposed to conventional slurry tailings disposals. This is illustrated through various case studies and serves to demonstrate how paste can add value and reduce risk to a successful business.

Recent advances in global positioning systems (GPS), machine guidance technology and telemetry allow an unprecedented level of control of surface mining operations. GPS technology can now locate the bucket of a shovel or the blade of a dozer within 50 mm. Some of the outcomes possible are: precise selective mining û even when the ore is visually indistinguishable from waste; tracking grade and tonnage of every ore parcel through the mine; real time productivity monitoring; detailed post accident safety analysis; and tracking the movements of every piece of equipment. This paper will consider the contribution that GPS based machine control systems can make to ensuring that surface mining projects deliver the outcomes promised in the feasibility studies. Case studies of installations are presented.

Samples from the Callide Coal Measures, Queensland, Australia, containing the minor maceral, micrinite, have been studied using optical and electron-optical techniques to determine the precise compositional and structural nature of micrinite when in association with vitrinite macerals. Emphasis has been placed on direct spatial correlation of optical and electron-optical data due to the fine grain size (90 per cent of the component) and, as such, should not be considered a maceral.

Higher commodity prices and environmental considerations will make selective narrow-vein mining more attractive in future. Unfortunately, hand-held airleg (jackleg) mining is a mature technology that has safety and productivity limitations. Despite decades of attempted innovation, no obvious successor to airleg mining has emerged. The coal resources of the Singleton- Muswellbrook area of New South Wales are of major importance to Australia, and are likely to play a significant role in meeting the expanding demands for energy in many countries of the world. Coal resources of 45 thousand million tonnes of which 15 thousand million tonnes lie at a depth of less than 200m have been estimated. The history of coal mining in the area commenced in the mid 1800's and has been one of fluctuations in production but of rapid expansion in more recent years. It is destined to become the largest coal producing area in New South Wales. Coal is being won from the area by strip mining, open pit mining and by underground means. The techniques involved are described. The area is well endowed with infra- structure such as modern towns, railways, road- ways and access to port facilities. Production of both coking coal and steaming coal is expected to rise significantly within the next 25 years. A large proportion of the State's anticipated increased production to between 117 and 177 million tonnes by the year 2000 is likely to come from this area.
