The conventional ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO) loader utilises a pneumatic system to control the flow of ANFO (via rotary actuator/ball valve) and air (via an auxiliary air valve). This system, though relatively simple and reliable, has several drawbacks with respect to ease of control and level of automation. In this paper, a radio frequency (RF) remote control for explosives charging is discussed. The system design incorporates electric solenoid valves to control the rotary actuator and the auxiliary air valve. All operations associated with explosives charging are selectable at the remote and are completed according to a modifiable time sequence. This allows the following charging sequence to be reduced to a single momentary application of the remote:removal of water from the hole prior to charging with ANFO; charging of the hole for a preset but adjustable period of time; and removal of the remaining ANFO from the ANFO hose. A specially developed remote switch allows the operator to maintain two-handed control of the ANFO hose whilst achieving full control of the charge-up process. Failsafe electronic architecture is incorporated into the systemÆs design to increase safety to the highest level. Should the RF remote control fail, a wired remote is included in the system to allow for the charging process to continue, albeit at a reduced level of control. The application of the RF remote control system in an underground explosives charging operation minimises and/or eliminates many problems associated with the use of the conventional charging system. These include: the wet-hole problem, trip and entanglement hazards, air embolism and the two-man loader control requirement. The developed remote control unit proved to be effective at removing water from wet holes leading to increased face advance per drilling operation. It proved to be economically feasible, allowed for an increase in systemÆs dependability and safety factor and for a truly one-man operation which resulted in reduced manpower.

Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited has maintained an interest in the screening of iron ore fines (nominally -6 mm). However, no dry screening process had successfully demonstrated acceptable separating efficiencies at high tonnage rates, low operating costs, and mechanical reliability when screening iron ore fines (containing up to 6% free moisture) at sizes of around 1 to 2 mm. A new type of vibrating inclined screen has recently been developed which is claimed to have a non-blinding screening surface. It was decided to test a pilot scale unit in an existing pilot plant located at Hamersley's facilities at Dampier, Western Australia. The appropriate operating parameters such as vibration speed and feed rate were determined using one fine ore type. Mats with different aperture sizes, and different feed moisture contents were also tested. Trials were then conducted on various fine ore types to indicate the effect of different size distributions on separating efficiencies. The effects of feed moisture content were determined with these ore types, and a blend of lump (nominally -30+6 mm) and fines was tested to compare the screen's performance with that of the bottom deck of the minesite product Screens.

This paper compares different results for overburden volume estimation assisted by geoestatistics, particularly using kriging methods. The main goal is to obtain the most reliable digital terrain model for the calculation of the overburden volume. The data was collected on an irregularly spaced grid and interpolated values were calculated to provide a denser, more regular data set before volume estimation. The field work was developed at the Butia-Leste Coal Mine, southern most Brazil, where an accurate survey was done using a total station theodolite with electronic data collector. The study was developed in five main steps: data acquisition, exploratory data analysis, spatial continuity measurements, point and block kriging estimation and verification of the results. Data acquisition was carried out on a 5 x 5 in grid. This dense grid provides an exhaustive data set of the real terrain against which data subsets can be compared for the various interpolation procedures and volume calculation. This provides an interesting insight into the influence of the number of data on the estimation error. Univariate statistics were used to compare each data subset and the exhaustive dataset. Ordinary kriging on the data subsets followed by contouring was carried out using Geoeas and Surfer software respectively. A subroutine written in C provided the link between the files generated in Geoeas and subsequent contouring routines embedded into the Surfer package. Omnidirectional and directional variograms were modelled defining the parameters for kriging estimation using Geoeas. Different variogram models were checked through cross validation prior to kriging. A comparison between the magnitude of the differences in volumes calculated with the different DTMs was attained. These final result indicates the sensitivity of the volume obtained to the number of data points. As the number of data points increases the estimation error decreases, but at some point there is no significant decrease in the final volume with the collection of additional data.

The Pilbara iron ore industry has seen rapid growth over the last five years and is now bracing itself for another expansion which will take its seaborne trade to beyond 500 Mt/a. To effectively utilise port capacities, port stockpile turnover will become extremely rapid and each stockpile built will have to be of a quality which is precise and unbiased.Sampling systems at the older Pilbara mine sites were generally designed during the 1980s and reflect the practices which were considered adequate at the time. Hence, the precision of measurement at production sites is generally unknown and quality assurance (QA) of sampling facilities falls short of what current best practice suggests. This paper suggests practical improvements in sampling practices and quality assurance, which will assist the industry in achieving quality objectives in times of rapid mining expansion.

Arrow Energy NL has been operating a number of coal seam gas wells in the Darling Downs region of Queensland. At the time of writing this paper, the region is enduring an extended drought period. The local aquifers are depleting and have not been significantly recharged in over a decade. The local communities (both rural and townships) are struggling to obtain water. Currently, coal seam gas (CSG) operators (under licence) draw water from the coal seams as part of the gas production process and the majority of operators choose to evaporate this water, as it is characteristically brackish to saline in quality and as such must be contained. Although the water produced from one CSG operator is not sufficient to drought-proof the greater area of the Darling Downs, there is potential to supply smaller local areas and contribute to the sustainability of these communities. This paper outlines the work completed by Arrow and its local community partners on the Darling Downs to date, and discusses the application of the produced formation water for:stock watering in feedlots, as a feedstock for coal washing, as a potable water supply for Dalby, as an agricultural water supply for cotton farming, and use as a medium for growing salt-water fin fish.

The ironmaking industry consumes a large amount of fossil fuel derived carbon as heat source, reducing agent of iron ores and carburising agent of reduced iron. Although the demand for drastic decrease of carbon dioxide emission, carbon is an essential element for smelting process of molten iron. The carbon recycling ironmaking process by circulating CO has been already proposed to achieve carbon neutrality. However, the production of molten hot metal is not considered in this process because sufficient amount of carbon does not dissolve in reduced iron by CO. Therefore, our group has suggested a new carbon recycling ironmaking process which can produce hot metal. In this process, free carbon and iron carbides produced by carbon deposition reaction using metallic iron as a catalyst are used. It is known that only Fe3C is obtained as iron carbide by using CO gas, however, Fe5C2 is also produced by adding H2 gas. The composite agglomerated with these carbonaceous materials and fine iron ore (Deposited Carbon-Iron oxide Composite: DCIC) is reduced and melted in a furnace. It is reported that Fe3C in DCIC accelerates the reduction reaction and melting of the composite. In this study, the effects of iron carbides and free carbon on the melting behaviour of DCIC are investigated. Fe3C, Fe5C2 and free carbon were produced by vapour deposition using porous iron whiskers and CO-CO2-H2 gas. These were agglomerated with hematite reagent at a certain ratio to prepare DCIC samples with and without Fe5C2. The samples were heated up to 1300°C in inert atmosphere. The DCIC containing Fe5C2 completely melted and iron nuggets were obtained after the experiment. This behaviour was not observed in the composite without Fe5C2. This indicates that using Fe5C2 is more preferable than Fe3C for molten iron production using DCIC.

Performance testing is often used by project owners and financiers to provide protection from, or assessment of, technical aspects of project design, procurement, construction and commissioning. The performance tests can range from comprehensive performance warranties relating to process performance and production in the case of lump sum turn key (LSTK) projects to less onerous demonstration tests for cost reimbursable contracts. This paper will discuss performance testing from both the contractorÆs and ownerÆs perspectives and focuses on: when performance tests are required, what type of performance test/warranty is optimum for each type of project, and how project performance should be evaluated. The requirement for performance testing can be driven by the project financiers, particularly in the case of smaller resource development companies. In such cases, differentiation between ownerÆs risk and contractorÆs risk can become contentious. At the other end of the spectrum, larger mining houses may choose to heavily influence the engineering and design process with the contractor supplying services on a reimbursable basis. In that case, the performance testing process is often limited to demonstration tests that validate performance for the ownerÆs corporate governance requirements. This paper was prepared due to the lack of published benchmarking of performance testing and the resultant differences in expectations between a contractor and a project owner that often surface late in the contract negotiation process. The paper provides a checklist of requirements for both the owner and the contractor that may be used to provide æcommon purposeÆ early in the contract negotiation process.

The use of solid state detector and radioisotope x-ray source for x-ray fluorescence analysis is illustrated by analysis for iron, copper, zinc, tin, and lead in about 700 samples taken from Australian mineral process streams. Limits of detection based on counting statistics (3 standard deviations) range from 0·001 to 0·004 per cent by weight element. The analysis accuracy was usualIy between 2 to 10 per cent (rms) of the mean element concentration and was determined by comparison with assays supplied by mineral companies. In most cases the main cause of error appears to be due to this assay and not the x-ray fluorescence technique.Some potential fields of application of solid state detector and radioisotope x-ray source for analyses in the mineral industry are indicated.

The interaction between ore-bearing fluids and the siliciclastic rocks typically hosting orogenic gold deposits in Phanerozoic metamorphic terrains result in the development of a distinctive alteration halo. Along with petrological changes such as the replacement of chlorite by carbonate and the growth of sericite, characteristic geochemical modifications take place within this alteration envelope. These include variations in elemental abundances and more or less pronounced shifts in the H, C, N, O, and S isotopic signature of the ore system. æFingerprintingÆ these isotopic trends can provide exploration with additional vectors towards the ore zone, and yields valuable information regarding the source of the hydrothermal fluids and the solutes contained therein. Data from radiogenic isotope systems such as Sr-Rb, Ar-Ar, Xe-Ra, Pb-Pb, Re-Os, Sm-Nd, and U-Pb can constrain the kinematic history of ore-hosting structures, provide important clues concerning the absolute timing of gold emplacement, and enable the detailed characterisation of associated intrusives with respect to their magma source(s) and crystallisation age. Although high analytical costs, long turn-around times and the potential for misinterpretation prevent isotope systems from offering a æquick & dirtyÆ analytical method that would provide a significant advantage in exploration for orogenic gold mineralisation, the development of integrated four-dimensional ore genesis models depends heavily on constraints obtained from isotope mass spectrometry.

Evaluation of Grinding Medium Wear in Stirred Mills The standard fine grinding machines in the minerals industry are stirred mills whose performance largely depends on the competency of the grinding medium. Medium wear in stirred mills is one of the key parameters for medium selection. A wear evaluation methodology is developed and applied in this paper to measure the wear rate of river sand using a laboratory batch stirred mill. The procedure is demonstrated by testing the sand medium in a 0.55 kW batch stirred media detritor (SMD). The sand wear rate determined in the laboratory batch mill is successfully scaled up to that determined on a full-scale Metso 355 kW SMD mill.

This paper examines the broader implications of recent and ongoing changes in mineral resource managementå and reporting practices and the impact that these might have on mining companies. It is likely that an International Reporting Code will be developed in the near future, based on a number of National codes produced in recent years. However, this is only part of the reporting story, as an International Code brings with it a range of further issues to resolve. For the Code to be effective, there needs to be international recognition and perhaps licensing of Competent Persons and an expanded base of sponsoring professional bodies. Also, in an increasingly global business, shareholders, regulators and other interested parties need to know and understand the general processes involved in resource and reserve estimation and reporting in order to recognise companies that maintain the highest standards. There is a current trend towards greater scrutiny of company performance in a range of areas under the banner of corporate governance, and many changes are happening that will place greater disclosure burdens on all companies in the future. Good corporate governance means management of company assets for the benefit of the stakeholders. For a mining company, there is no greater asset than its mineral resources and reserves and directors are just as responsible for effective management of their mineral resources as they are for financial good practice. The paper looks at the relevance of corporate governance principles to mineral resource management and the changes that this could bring to the way that companies deal with regulators, shareholders, financiers and others. Finally, increased scrutiny and further regulation inevitably means greater effort by the industry and higher costs. Despite this the author believes that there are substantial offsetting benefits to be gained by companies prepared to take the initiative in improving resource management practices and communicating these improvements to shareholders. In order to achieve the benefits however, the industry needs to fully engage in the changes that are taking place û setting its own standards and working with the regulators rather than sitting back and being legislated against. Mineral resource reporting provides a good model of how this process can work and there will be other opportunities in the coming years as the industry seeks to develop best practice in mineral resource management. The subject of government involvement in industry is, to say the least, a touchy one. For many it conjures up thoughts of socialisation or nationalisation. For others it is a desirable objective and is seen as a means of social reform by giving government a greater say in the control and distribution of human, financial and natural resources for the betterment of the community. Whatever your point of view, it is difficult to deny that government involvement exists to lesser or greater degrees in all industries. The mining industry is no exception and the degree of government involvement is probably greater than it is in other industries. I think it is important to remember when talking about government involvement in industry to recognise that there are different types of involvement and that all governments have a right, if they so desire, to become involved in whatever way they choose. The decision of a government to increase its direct or indirect involvement must, of course, be taken in the national interest. Governments, if we are still old fashioned enough to believe in ministerial and electoral responsibility, must make up their own minds about whether their actions are in the national interest and they must be prepared to accept the consequences of that action, good or bad. Host-rock û wallrock major and trace element geochemistry associated with epithermal gold mineralisation in the Hauraki Goldfield of New Zealand is poorly documented, even though rock geochemistry is a recognised tool in exploration. Such responses assist in recognition of the regional scale imprint of fossil hydrothermal activity, and indicate targets for detailed evaluation within these alteration zones.   Recent investigation of gold deposits in the Waihi (Gladstone), Golden Cross (Empire), Thames (Waiotahi) and Coromandel (Tokatea) areas indicate enrichments of Au, As and Sb in the andesitic wallrocks hosting mineralisation. Of the other elements examined, Si, K and Rb are enriched, and Na, Ca, and Sr are depleted at all deposits. These trends are best developed in the vicinity of veining. In deposits with clay alteration dominating (Waiotahi and Tokatea) there is also depletion of Mg, Mn, Zn and Cu. Ba and Cr are variably enriched or depleted within different styles of alteration. Base-metal enrichment in the wallrocks is not a feature of Hauraki deposits.

Chromite was recorded among the rare minerals in the natural beach sand concentrates on the coast of Northern New South Wales by Whitworth(l) in 1931, and the commercial production of zircon and rutile from these beach sands has yielded concentrates of ilmenite with small amounts of chromium. The chromite is a detrimental impurity in the utilisation of the ilmenite, and the difficulties that attend the separation of the small amount of chromite from the ilmunite have raised suggestions from time to time that chromite occurs with ilmenite in composite grains. The absence of such composite grains and the nature of the chromite grains has been indicated by the following mineragraphic examination of magnetic concentrates containing chromite which were prepared by the C.S.I.R. Ore Dressing Laboratory, Melbourne University, from ilmenite concentrates from beach sands at Norrie's Head, County Rous, New South Wales and Stradbroke Island, Queensland.The magnetic concentrates from each locality are divided into five fractions, and the No. 1 concentrate is the most highly magnetic and the tailing the least magnetic. This paper outlines a laboratory-based design method, founded in critical state soil mechanics, for identification of an appropriate compaction specification to ensure dilative conditions prevail across the design TSF stress range. The method makes use of the critical state line (CSL) and consolidation tests prepared at varying compactive efforts. The CSL and consolidation curves are plotted together in e-log p’ space, with the compaction curves transformed from vertical effective stress to mean effective stress using the coefficient of earth pressure at rest (K0). Consideration is given to the sensitivity of K0 as it is generally not available during the design phase. An example of the design method is illustrated with laboratory data.

One of the regular tasks of geotechnical and mining engineers is the measurement and management of deformation in underground excavations. Although several methods are used to do so, the incumbent methodologies for monitoring deformation and ground support serviceability are limited to the use of visual observations or measurements at discrete points, resulting in a qualitative assessment only. The introduction of LiDAR technology allows a quantitative assessment across the entire excavation volume and its rock surface, by collecting a full three-dimensional image of the entirety of an excavation such as an underground drive, decline, or a tunnel. Comparisons between epochs of complete 3D data coverage allows for change detection over time that doesn’t feature otherwise typical omissions. The implementation of regular scanning has shown to be highly advantageous for mines with swelling or squeezing ground, but also at mines with rapid deformation. Despite the LiDAR potential, its adoption has been slow. A key reason for that is that working with point clouds is foreign to most geotechnical engineers. Point clouds have long been the realm of surveyors, but to fully adopt their use in geomechanics requires retraining, upskilling, and devotion by the individuals and the company. Sites are already stretched, so often there are insufficient resources to be applied to bringing the new technology into use. The solution to this hurdle is to partner with subject matter experts to achieve the desired high-quality outcomes without the commitment of time by geotechnical personnel. This paper presents a new solution of fully automated raw LiDAR point cloud data processing that not only enables geotechnical engineers to avoid having to learn unrelated skills by allowing for deformation monitoring without associated training or expertise, but it also provides instant reporting results as well as a sophisticated database with features otherwise not available. All data processing time and effort is completely replaced by an automated process which at the same time opens up the opportunity to monitor many more excavation volumes at a higher frequency than is possible with conventional tools and methodology.

The problems of using comparatively simple x-ray diffraction equipment for quantitative analysis are examined. Internal standard and direct calibration procedures based upon the measurement of integrated diffraction energy (diffractometer peak area) have been developed for the determination of quartz in Broken Hill dusts. By these methods an accuracy of ± 10 per cent of the true value can be obtained and this can be improved to ±2 1/2 per cent by statistical methods if necessary.Rapid analysis for the components quartz, muscovite, rhodonite, galena, fluorite, sphalerite, calcite, and garnet has been developed by adaptation of direct calibration procedures and use of maximum diffraction energies (diffractometer peak height). Until more is know!) about the pathological effects of multi-component dusts of the Broken Hill type it seems undesirable to fix theIr allowable concentrations in terms of the quartz content.

Copper minerals are often associated with gold ores. These create processing problems since cyanide solutions are not selective for gold alone. Copper minerals are also leached by cyanide, and typically each one per cent of `reactive' copper in the ore consumes about 30 kg t 1 cyanide. Once in solution, copper cyanide species create further processing problems as they adsorb onto carbon along with the dicyanoaurate ion. These problems make conventional cyanidation of gold ore uneconomic if the ore contains too much copper. As a result, methods of economically processing gold-copper ores are becoming of increasing importance.One of the more promising methods of treating these ores is by selective leaching of the gold by an ammoniacal cyanide solution, a method first described by Hunt in 1901. This method is already in commercial use in Mauritania, treating copper/gold tailings. In general terms, the addition of I - 2 g U1 ammonia to a standard cyanide leach solution causes a significant increase in gold extraction and decrease in copper extraction. However, early testwork on this system has concluded that the optimal leach conditions are critically dependent on ore composition, and the mechanism is not well understood, making predictions of best conditions impossible.
