Concerns regarding the uncertainty of stope dilution at MMG Dugald River Underground Mine led to a trial stoping program to acquire full-scale comprehensive geotechnical information and to test the validity of the geotechnical and mining parameters. Given that stope production drilling and blasting is a key parameter that influences dilution a detailed stope blast vibration project was implemented. The stoping trial consisted of 19 stopes, a combination of both sublevel open stoping and longitudinal and transverse stopes, of which five were monitored for blast vibrations.The blast vibration project utilised 20 triaxial geophones and five triaxial accelerometers installed in the hanging wall of five monitored stopes. For each stope fired, full blast waveforms were recorded along with detailed information of the blast design. Analysis of the blast vibrations used the Holmberg-Persson approach, with potential damage determined by the relative (Holmberg-Persson) K values.The project identified the benefit of parallel, breakthrough slot holes in reducing blast vibration damage. The results show that radial rings toeing or stabbing into the stope wall lead to higher vibrational energy yield which contributed to increased overbreak. Hanging wall overbreak, by comparison, with parallel, breakthrough blastholes with 1 m standoff, combined with lower density explosive charging (0.8 EP) and increased delays limited blast vibration damage. A number of ring burdens from 1.4 m to 2.5 m were monitored with no difference in terms of energy yield being identified. Mineral formations, accumulated during technogenic activities greatly influence an economic and ecological situation in the Kola North. On the one hand, the dumps from extraction of mineral resources, tailing ponds of beneficating plants, ash dumps, wastes of metallurgical and mechanical engineering productions destroy the regionÆs environment and require taking certain measures and costs to bury or protect from weathering, oxidation, etc. On the other hand, technogenic mineral formations contain a lot of valuable scarce components. The amount of solid wastes increases annually, causing damage to ecology and economy. Researches conducted in recent years showed a possibility and economic expediency of comprehensive processing of wastes from different enterprises in Murmansk region and their use for production of new competitive commodity output, possessing high consumer properties. Thus, involving mineral wastes from Khibiny apatite deposits into hydrometallurgical industrial processing provides the basis for setting up a large beneficating-metallurgical complex. In this case ores and wastes from other deposits on the Kola Peninsula, containing titanium, rare, rare-earth and other valuable elements, may be involved into processing. Establishing such a complex will allow to organise a deep processing of natural resources, utilise some production wastes, improve ecological security and supply production with competitive output. Expanding the complex implies not only involving new mineral raw material into processing, but mainly deepening raw material processing, maximum utilisation of local natural resources and obtaining a wider variety of prime products.

With the extensive exploitation and gradual depletion of high-grade copper reserves, the mining industry is paying more and more attention to the hydrometallurgical extraction of copper from lowgrade and arsenic bearing copper ores. Hydrometallurgical processing, such as heap leaching, column leaching and bioleaching, provide a viable alternative to the traditional pyrometallurgy due to its harmony with the environment, moderate capital investment, and low operating costs. However, the slow leaching kinetics of enargite (Cu3AsS4) and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) remain problematic for commercial leaching practice. The formation mechanism and the nature of the passivating layers during leaching is still a matter of debate in hydrometallurgical research. In this study, the dissolution mechanism of enargite and chalcopyrite in sulfuric acid solution was investigated using a range of electrochemical and spectroscopic analysis methods. Electrochemical oxidation of enargite demonstrated an obvious passivation region from 500 to 750 mV (Ag/AgCl). The formed passivation film was found a n-type semiconductor behaviour, which is different from the original enargite with a p-type behaviour. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) suggested that a nonstoichiometric film Cu(3−x)As(1−y)S4 (x>>y) accumulated on the electrode surface, which accounted for the obvious decrease in current density in the passive potential region. For chalcopyrite, three important potentials of 550, 680 and 730 mV which are related to the formation and dissolution of passivation film were observed based on the cyclic voltammetry (CV) and potentiodynamic polarisation. Raman and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra studies of the chalcopyrite electrodes after being treated under these three potentials indicated a metal-deficient sulfide of Cu1−xFe1−yS2 (y>>x) might be responsible for the passivation phenomenon. Hence, it is concluded that the passivation of enargite and chalcopyrite are similar which are caused by metaldeficient sulfide surfaces although the compositions of the metal-deficient sulfide are different.

This paper presents the findings and analysis of the investigation of effectiveness of thin spray-on liners (TSLs) as a gas management tool in underground coalmines. The project involves spraying TSL on the area surrounding gas drainage holes whereby the TSL acts as a thin membrane decreasing the permeability of the coal. This restricts air migrating through the coal seam and diluting gas from the drainage holes. There are a number of potential benefits from this technique but key points are that gas drainage holes produce gas with higher concentrations of methane. The design and execution of a field trial to investigate the effectiveness of a TSL on purity of in situ methane from gas drainage holes is presented in this report. For eight drainage holes, the results show an average increase in methane purity by 9.14 per cent and a reduction in air contamination by an average 7.93 per cent. Overall methane flow rate decreased by 27.6 L/s; however, flow rates were unreliable due to poor measuring equipment. For most holes, methane purity was not changed significantly; however, certain boreholes were responsible for most of the variation in methane purity. The boreholes showing a dramatic improvement in methane purity were likely those with intersecting cleats covered by the TSL. If the TSL was sprayed over more area, specifically in areas where the cleats are intersecting with holes, it is likely that purity of methane in the drainage holes will increase.CITATION:Tenney, J M, Chalmers, D and Li, Z, 2015. Geometallurgy is a tool that, for more than a century, has been present in the implicit operations of mineral beneficiation. There’s a need to understand the characteristics of the material to be processed. This has led metallurgists to ask geologists what type of rock and mineralogy is entering the Beneficiation Plant and vice versa. The geologist needs to understand the beneficiation process in order to be able to carry out the production programming. The paradigm is whether geometallurgy can be applied to small-scale mining or if it is only aimed at large companies that invest millions of dollars to conduct studies. With this work, we provide an example of how geometallurgy can help improve the processes of a small mining company located in Ecuador (South America). We performed characterizations of geological and mineralogical and metallurgical tests in universities and the National Research Institute of Geological Metallurgical Mining. The origin of the theme is based on the fact that gold has been detected in the final tailings. The flotation concentrates meet the standards in terms of the content of economically profitable metals, but this isn’t the case with regards to the percentage of arsenic, which has hindered sales. The hypothesis is: conducting technical and scientific research will optimize the metallurgical process for the recovery of gold and concentrates. The referential framework is the mining geology of the Bella Rica District, current status of the Beneficiation Plant. In the theoretical framework there are parameters of the veins, comminution operations, gravimetric concentration, flotation, and cyanidation. The methodological framework contemplates the characterization of the gold ore, the chemical, mineralogical, textural, metallurgical analysis and the interpretation of the results. Thus, the design of a geometallurgy model of the deposit, with its main characteristics, is a conclusion that serves as a basis for the proposal of the optimization of the metallurgical process.CITATION:Lozada, D and Salazar, A, 2018. The Collie River catchment, located approximately 200 km south of Perth, covers an area of around 2830 km2 and is the source of run-off to the Wellington Dam, an important irrigation water resource for the Collie Irrigation District. The salinity of the Wellington Dam has increased due to historical clearing and irrigators currently use water with salinity levels approximately twice that of the Murray River in South Australia (Water and Rivers Commission, 2001). The Collie River Salinity Situation Statement (2001), released by the Water and Rivers Commission (now the Department of Water), identified realistic actions that could achieve the salinity reduction target. Subsequent benefit-cost analyses and prefeasibility studies recommended the diversion of the most saline flows in the Collie River away from the dam as an immediate intervention (URS, 2003). The East Branch of the Collie River above the locality of Buckingham (20 km east of Collie) contributes around half of the salt that flows into the Wellington Dam and the diversion and storage of the saltiest flows from the East Branch at Buckingham was identified as a viable option for reducing salinity in Wellington Dam. The proposal had one problem û the water could not be disposed of as quickly as it was diverted. However, in the vicinity of the diversion site were a number of coal mine voids and after preliminary discussions, the Government/Griffin Coal alliance was formed and from this the opportunities have continued. Diverted water would be stored temporarily in an adjacent mine void (Chicken Creek 4 void) and then disposed of to the sea. The disposal options included Western Power CorporationÆs saline discharge pipeline from Collie Power Station, or a new pipeline. The diverted water was also identified as a potential raw source for treatment and use in industry. This has opened up opportunities including desalination, water efficiencies in the power stations, increased reliability of water supply for the power stations, water for new industries, wastewater disposal options and extra water for PerthÆs water supply. In the process of solving the water storage problems the project introduced a range of mine water quality problems û heavy metals and pH û and the Department of Water (DoW) is now working with the mining industry and the Centre for Sustainable Mine Lakes (CSML) to develop treatment and management technologies. The project has received support and funding through the National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality (NAP) and it has been possible to accelerate and enhance this project as a result of NAP. The DoW has developed the proposal to an advanced stage and gained approvals for the capital diversion program to go ahead. The partnerships have expanded to include the second mining company, Premier Coal, the Water Corporation, Western Power and the Harvey Irrigation Cooperative. The proposal could feasibly result in a $90 million integrated water management initiative for Collie using the latest technology, mining operations and providing water for value adding industries in the local area. The DoW is not a mining company; however, our experience in managing water in times of shortage, environmental water quality criteria, competition for water and managing community expectations will have the same success factors:consultation and knowing your community and stakeholders, sharing issues and working in partnership can provide results far greater than the initial issue, even brackish water has value, every sector is in competition with each other and has to have a share of the water, an integrated approach can provide opportunities for development in areas of water shortage, and never think of water as wastewater.

In this paper, a method for extracting and refining metallic molybdenum using low-temperature ZnCl2- NaCl-KCl molten salt was proposed. The electrochemical behaviour of molybdenum ions in ZnCl2- NaCl-KCl molten salt was investigated in detail, and pure metallic molybdenum was collected on the cathode. The reduction and diffusion processes of Mo(V) ions in ZnCl2-NaCl-KCl molten salt were determined through a series of electrochemical methods. The diffusion coefficients and nucleation modes of Mo(V) ions were also studied, and electrolysis was conducted for a prolonged period at a constant current density. The results indicated that the electrode reduction of Mo(V) ions in ZnCl2- NaCl-KCl molten salt proceeds through a three-step reaction: Mo(V) → Mo(IV) → Mo(III) → Mo at 250°C. The Mo(V) → Mo(IV) reaction was reversible and diffusion-controlled, with a Mo(V) diffusion coefficient of 6.02 × 10-6 cm2 s-1. Additionally, the nucleation mode of Mo(V) ions was instantaneous nucleation. The products electro-deposited were confirmed of metallic molybdenum with a particle size of less than 1 μm.

Powders prepared from the algae Gracilaria secundata, Ulva lactuca and Ecklonia radiatawere shown to provide sole nutritional support for microbial, microaerobic, biodegradation of low-grade manganese dioxide ore. G. secundata was the most effective bacterial nutrient giving 32 per cent recovery of Mn++, at an average rate of 63 mg Mn++/litre/day and a yield of 24 mg Mn++/g dry powder in microaerobic cultures containing 1.5 per cent (w/v)MnOz ore and 3per cent (w/v) powder over 14 days. Although G. secundata was approximately half as effective as molasses in supporting microbial decomposition ofMnOz, possible on-site growth ofthe alga could be economicaIIy more practical than transporting carbohydrate to a distant mine site.

Traditional iron ore wet beneficiation plants are large multilevel structures, often integrated into centralised processing plants. They are characterised by sizeable footprints, substantial water and power consumption, inflexible design and low scalability. Significant design changes that address these issues need to be made before relocatable modular plants become feasible. Firstly, large amounts of processing water are required in standard wet plants, so it is vital that water consumption is reduced to an absolute minimum. Secondly, the process of depositing tailings into tailings storage facilities (TSFs) is environmentally destructive, consumes significant power and requires lengthy approvals to be completed. Thirdly, modules need to be easily and quickly relocatable.The solution to reducing water usage and eliminating TSF requirements is accomplished by providing a tailings dewatering and dry-stacking capability into a separate module. This equipment needs to dewater tailings to a point (typically below 20 per cent moisture) where dry stacking becomes possible – design is mainly driven by material rheology and particle size distribution (PSD). In this respect, a flexible and scalable strategy is employed to dewatering modules, allowing a variety of components such as dewatering cyclone clusters, paste thickeners, fine mesh vibrating screens and filter presses to be used to achieve the necessary moisture level, enabling the final dry stacking to be accomplished by a simple telescopic stacking system. Plant relocatability also requires modules to comply with mass and dimensional constraints, as well as ‘plug and play’ ease-of-use features.For coarse particle upgrade, jigs provide a low-cost and effective solution, whereas fine and ultra-fine Fe units can be recovered using Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS). Recently, sensor sorting – a dry process using X-ray fluorescence, X-ray transmission, laser or other sensors – has begun to make an impact in coarse particle separation, although capacities are still low. The overall objective of a plant is to provide an Fe upgrade of four to five per cent with a feed of up to 4 Mt/a and a recovery of approximately 50 per cent.CITATION:Graham, T, 2017. A positive displacement pump is being dev eloped for pipeline transportation of coking coal to a -50 mm export specification, at a con- centration and velocity which will allow trans- portation in the plug flow region, minimising degradation of the particle structure, and pipe= line friction losses which will be lower than with turbulent or laminar flow. Pump operation is by hydraulic powered free pistons in a rota- ting cylinder block, with cylinders overlapped by stationary inlet and discharge ports in a water lubricated and sealed rotary valve. Before this development coking coal was not considered suitable for transportation in slurry form, for the valves in the double act- ing duplex piston pumps used for slurry pipe- lines, cannot be divorced from the slurry and require that the solid material must be reduced to a fines'consistency before introduction into the pump suction. The hydraulic transportation of 10 million tonnes of -50 mm coking coal, 50 km from the Bargo area west of the escarpment to an offshore shiploader at Port Kembla is feasible. Study shows that economic factors alone would dictate that the development of a pumping system for long distance transportation of coking coal is necessary. The Aberfoyle Tin Mine lies on a wide sloping bench about 2,000-2,500 ft. above sea level, at Rossarden, 14 miles north of Avoca, in north-eastern Tasmania. The quartz-cassiterite veins were discovered in 1916, but mining did not begin until 1926. Trenching revealed seven small tin-bearing veins within a width of 57 ft. of Palaeozoic slates and sandstones, and it was assumed that the mineralization extended beneath the adjacent cover of Permian strata, but the presence of the main vein system (the 26 Vein System) was not suspected until the Aberfoyle Fault was discovered late in 1928.The mine has now been developed on thirteen levels, to a depth of 1,350 ft. The lower limit of economic mineralization appears to lie at about the ll-level, which is 1,060 ft. vertically below the concealed outcrop of the main veins. Results obtained from small scale tests using Australian tin concentrates indicate that metallic tin containing less than 0·1 per cent iron can be recovered by a two-stage process using hydrogen and make-up chlorine. In the first stage the concentrate is ground,. pelletized, roasted, and reacted at 650°C with HCI and H2 to volatilize the tin as SnOI2. The volatilization reaction is conducted with cocurrent gas and solids flow because it was found that the use of cocurrent flow yielded a solids residue substantially free from FeCI2. The second stage uses a technique termed "reflux reduction" during which the SnOl2 produced by volatilization is reduced by hydrogen to form tin and a gas containing HCI and H2 of sufficiently high HCI tenor for recycle to the volatilization stage. The elimination of tin ranged from 98+ to 99·7+ per cent of the tin from concentrates containing 5 to 50 per cent tin, respectively. The process should be capable of continuous operation, and a tentative calculation has shown ,that a treatment rate of 12,000 tonnes of tin concentrate per year could be obtained in a volatilization reactor 1·1 m in diameter and 6·1 m high. The process may have particular application to finely divided concentrates containing less than 20 per cent tin.

All mines face water management challenges. Adopting leading practice water management strategies can help reduce both operational and strategic risks. While many of the water issues faced by underground mines are the same as other operations, underground mining presents some unique water management challenges. In this paper we review trends in underground mining, water use and associated water issues. We then compile a structured set of strategic and operational risks that are pertinent to underground operations. The causes, threats, opportunities and measures for controlling or mitigating the risks are summarised. The risk compilation could provide an addendum for underground operations to the Australian governments leading practice water management handbook.

Mining operations in arid regions are compelled to reduce their consumption of fresh water. Closed water circuits are an attractive solution and, in addition to reducing freshwater consumption, have the added benefit of reducing reagent consumption as well as the environmental impact by eliminating effluent discharge. Accumulating ionic species have been shown to hinder collector adsorption which reduces the recovery of valuable minerals. Numerous studies have investigated the effect of degrading water quality on collector adsorption however there is very limited understanding as to how this takes place from an electrochemical perspective. This study therefore aims to investigate how the presence of accumulating ionic species at varying concentrations affects the electrochemical adsorption of sodium ethyl xanthate onto galena. The synthetic plant water used in this study comprised of single salt solutions to isolate the effects of the ionic species of interest. The ionic strengths were varied between 0.0242 M, 0.0727 M, 0.1212 M and 0.2426 M which correspond to University of Cape Town (UCT) Centre for Minerals Research (CMR) synthetic plant waters of 1, 3, 5 and 10SPW, respectively. Mineral rest potentials indicated how changing water quality affected xanthate-mineral interactions. Microflotation observed the impact of changing water quality on mineral floatability.

This paper presents an overview of the strategy adopted to bring the Ballymoney opencut lignite deposit to an advanced stage of mine design and confidence. Certain aspects of the project differentiate it from the normal Australian experience. These include the thick overlying glacial drift, the proximity to established infrastructure and the wide fluctua- tions in annual lignite demand. The incorporation of these factors in the mine plan are discussed. The deposit area is located near the town of Ballymoney, in Northern Ireland. In July 1986, after winning an internationally competitive tender, Meekatharra Minerals Ltd commenced an exploration programme designed to delineate reserves to supply a 450 MW power station. In less than eighteen months, a complete evaluation was undertaken and a price submitted in December 1987 to the relevant authorities for the supply of lignite. Subsequently, UK government consultants and significant inter- national banks have endorsed the findings. The mining study commenced with the evaluation of various develop- ment strategies, followed by selection of the most viable mining method and equipment. The equipment selected will mine four million tonnes of lignite and eleven million cubic metres of waste each year. In year 15, the waste removal requirement increases to almost seventeen million cubic metres. This results in an average strip ratio over the mine life of three cubic metres of waste per tonne of lignite. The quality of the product delivered to the run of mine conveyor transfer point, based on maximum resource recovery, will include heat content of 8813 kJ/kg (3789 Btu/Ib), ash content of 28% and moisture content of 40%.

Longwall mining has historically been considered an application for only deep reserves. This has changed in the recent past as longwall has become competitive with surface mining. Many resources marked for stripping now he in the domain of longwall. Today, the best longwall mines compete with strip mines operating in even the lowest stripping ratios. Longwall mining has become more widely applicable than it ever has been in the past and it is now generally considered the method of choice in situations where high levels of coal production are required. But the best way to use longwall mining has become less certain with the opportunities that highwall access provides. Wall-to-wall mining is the use of retreating longwall developed from and retreating toward a highwall. As a surface mine reaches its ultimate highwall, the opportunity for longwall punch mining or wall-to-wall mining is obvious. There are several clear operating advantages to operating a longwall in this way and where highwalls are available, the best economic decision will generally favor planning a direct approach. Yet wall-to-wall is not applicable in every situation even when highwalls are available. Moreover, the advantages of wall-to-wall mining do not always justify the cost of trenching or box cuts to access coal . However, many tactical advantages of operating from the highwall can be realized with the use of specially equipped blind drilled or raised bored shafts. This paper discusses novel techniques for a shaft assisted mining system which permits the addition of conveyor structure and mine systems from the surface to the face for advance and retreat mining with longwall, shortwall or room and pillar panels.

SAG Mill Grinding Design Versus Geometallurgy - Getting it Right for Competent Ores Smarter processing for the future, in the area of SAG mill design involves accurate grinding test data, completing final mill design in less than three months, and at a cost of less than US$80 000. More detailed variability testing on the other hand takes longer, is more expensive, and is used for throughput optimisation for an existing or newly purchased mill. This paper shows that SAGDesignTM testing is excellent for new SAG plant design due to relatively low cost per test and the ability to do more testing for a limited budget on larger projects. It also briefly examines a way to develop proper geometallurgical ore hardness information on every block in the mine model, from the more detailed analysis data.

The object of this talk is to bring before members the importance of the prospector and the' State Battery system to the wealth and prosperity of the mining industry in particular and the State of Western Australia in general, and to touch on the more important features.Customs plants of any sort are usually subject to a good deal of critioism, usually on the large profits made at the expense of the customer, etc., and this often clouds the real value of the work being done.Prospectors, on the whole, are a good class of men; they work under conditions and difficulties which would deter those less spirited. Food, water and mining supplies are often difficult to obtain and frequently have to be transported great distances. Their mining tools are usually of the most primitive type, yet during last year over 109,000 tons of prospectors' ore were handled by the State Battery system for 73,250 fine oz. valued in Australian currency at over £587,000, the value being 57/- per long ton at par.This production brings the State Battery system into fourth position amongst the producers of the State, the yield being exceeded by the Lake View and Star, Wiluna and the Great Boulder.In passing I might mention that these notes were written at the end of the year 1940, and the above figures were for the previous period.
