Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) is a copper, gold and magnetite mining and processing operation located 38 kilometres north east of Cloncurry in the Mount Isa - Cloncurry mineral district of north west Queensland, Australia. The EHM ore body is an iron oxide copper gold deposit with an average grade of 1.1 percent copper, 0.5 g/tonne gold and 22 percent magnetite.At the end of 2009, after a series of promising laboratory test work, EHM converted the ball mill media charge from forged steel to high chrome media. Laboratory test work also indicated that with the use of high chrome media, the pH was able to be reduced with no negative impact on plant performance. At high pH values (above 10.5), the forged media is passivated, so as the pH of the system drops the media corrosion rate increases and floods the system with corrosion products, affecting flotation. As the high chrome media is much more inert, pH has less of an effect on copper flotation response.This paper provides an overview of the effects of reducing the pH in the EHM copper rougher flotation circuit. The pH in the roughers was dropped from 10.6 to 9.6 to determine the impact on the rougher performance and the subsequent performance of the whole copper flotation circuit. It was found that there was a slightly increased improvement in copper recovery and no statistical change in either the rougher or final copper concentrate grades for copper and gold.With the reduction in pH, there was a noticeable reduction in lime usage from 0.85 kg of lime per tonne of ore processed to 0.55 kg/t. Production scheduling is an important element of the mine planning process. The production schedule specifies the quantities of mineral to extract, the source of this ore, the timing of extraction and, where necessary, the quantity and timing of backfill placement. These details are important in linking long-term strategic goals to short-term operational planning. Mine scheduling techniques form the basis for communicating information concerning the overall impact of design and planning changes to a wide range of people at many levels within an organisation. Consequently the techniques used for mine scheduling must support the decision-making process by consistently providing high quality schedules in response to revised and updated data. A new mixed integer programming (MIP) model has been developed to generate optimal production schedules for underground stoping operations. The model maximised the before-tax Net Present Value of the production schedule while satisfying constraints such as contained metal tonnage, hoisting capacity, stope geometry relationships and stope backfilling demands. Zero-one variables were used to represent the decision to extract or backfill each stope in a particular time period. Continuous variables, capable of having non-integer values, were used to denote the quantity of ore or backfill associated with a specific stope in a given time period. A case study is presented to demonstrate the significant improvement in before-tax NPV over a comparative manual production schedule in a large underground mine. The MIP model allows for further modification to reduce solution times and meet the needs of individual mines.

This paper is essentially an address, rather than a detailed presentation of facts, because the third edition of `Nuclear Electricity - An Australian Perspective' has just been completed and will be available for the seminar. That 96-page booklet contains a lot more information than The AusIMM would be prepared to print in the seminar proceedings. Hence I have kept this paper brief, and ask readers to obtain a (free) copy of Nuclear Electricity at the seminar or from The AusIMM. It can be read as a supplement to the paper (or vice versa). According to one of Australia's well known critics of nuclear power, Professor Ian Lowe, `the pro-nuclear lobby's predictions of the future use of nuclear energy .... have been regularly and consistently wrong by large amounts, always overestimating the future demand for uranium" (Aust. Society, April 1989). While I do not accept this as a bald statement applying to all those in favour of increased use of nuclear power, there is sufficient truth in it for it to be credible. Certainly in the 1950s and the 1960s, when the new technology for producing controlled power from atomic fission was first being commercialised, there were some very exaggerated projections of the role of nuclear power. Many people thought that it would take over from fossil fuel fired electricity generation in much the same way as the motor vehicle took over from horse-drawn transport. And these early projections were not simply concerned with electric power generation, they included excavating harbours and digging canals with nuclear explosives.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of froth fl otation for the recovery of gold from the gravity tailing stream of the former Lihir Gold Limited (LGL) operation in Ballarat. The P80 of the tailings was determined by screen analysis as 1 mm, with test work conducted on as received material along with samples ground to P80 sizes of 47, 78 and 134 microns. Laboratory scale batch flotation tests were conducted at both natural and elevated pH to investigate the impact of pyrite depression on gold recovery. Results indicated that although an increase in grade from approximately 0.7 g/t to 3 g/t was achievable at a natural pH and a P80 of 134 micron, gold recovery was low at just 35 per cent. Finer grind sizes were found to have an adverse effect on both grade and recovery. Future efforts will be focused on the sub 310 micron size fraction of the tailings, which was revealed to contain approximately 85 per cent of the available gold and may be amenable to cyanidation or ultra-fine gravity treatment.

Detailed pit and outcrop mapping of sedimentary rocks and their alteration is providing insights into fluvial processes that operated during deposition of the world-class Yandi channel iron deposit. Five prominent rock units are traceable along the strike of the Yandi deposit and permit correlation of open pits and mesas. These units are the Eastern Clay Horizon (ECH), granule-pebble conglomerate (GPC), Main Ore Zone (MOZ), Basal Denatured Zone (BDZ), and Basal Conglomerate (BCONG). The upper part of the deposit is characterised by a transition from spheroidal grains with well-defined rims and nuclei to larger, subangular grains with poorly developed rims. The distribution of rock types and sedimentary features such as lateral accretion surfaces, channel scours and fills, graded bedding, cross-bedding, reworked horizons, and slumped strata are common at Yandi and indicate deposition in a fluvial system. Bedding is well preserved despite modification of original grain shapes and textures and introduction of secondary silica and alumina in the upper part of the deposit. The high lithic and clay content of the GPC and ECH possibly reflect changes in source area or a hiatus in deposition of the Marillana Pisolite. The MOZ and the BDZ may be the same depositional unit with the latter recording alteration by groundwater and destruction of primary textures and other sedimentary features. The BCONG is a channel lag deposit reworked during deposition of the MOZ. This interpretation is supported by the dominance of basement-derived lithic clasts, the presence of BCONG clasts, the variable thickness of the unit along strike and the presence of BCONG clasts in the BDZ.

In 2005, Solid Energy New Zealand Limited obtained non-notified consent for the disposal of 1Mt of coal ash at the Rotowaro minesite, forming part of a coal supply agreement with the Huntly Power Station. The consenting of major mine site activities has historically required wide consultation and involves notification of the application.   The risk and cost associated with consultation can be significantly reduced via a non-notified process. A non-notified consenting process necessitates environmental effects to be shown to be æless than minorÆ, which requires the combination of robust science and a pragmatic approach to design, assessment of environmental effects, and consenting issues.   Key issues examined included consideration of how to practically operate a significant disposal project within the confines of an operating mine, minimising the costs, civil and geotechnical design and practical issues associated with traditional disposal. Environmental issues specifically related to the coal ash, led to a site specific performance driven approach to management rather than relying on conventional prescriptive approaches. Environmental issues of concern include the leaching of boron and aluminium from ash into groundwater and mine water management systems where both boron and aluminium can occur at elevated levels.   Coal ash exhibits unusual geochemical characteristics reflecting the primary coal composition and the combustion process. The dominant coal type combusted at the Huntly Power Station is derived from Rotowaro and the resulting ash is cementitious and has a high alkalinity. As a result the disposal design is based on the characteristics of the ash itself rather than the material into, or onto which the ash is disposed. Non-notified status was able to be achieved through consideration of these key characteristics of the ash, ensuring that the dimensions of the disposal site and each location was designed to minimise the flow of groundwater through the ash and demonstrating that the physical ash disposal effects are less than minor compared to the consented mining operation.

Nickel phytomining is a low cost alternative to traditional nickel mining and a complementary process to existing mining operations in areas with low-grade nickel soils or nickel waste material. The process of nickel phytomining consists of growing selected hyperaccumulator plant species (‘metal crops’) on Ni-rich (ultramafic) soils, followed by harvesting and incineration of the biomass to produce a ‘bio-ore’ from which Ni salts or Ni metal may be recovered (Chaney et al, 2007). The ‘metal crops’ are selected on the basis of high biomass yield combined with high Ni concentrations (>1 per cent) in the above-ground biomass (Chaney et al, 2007). Currently, Alyssum murale and A. corsicum have been used for Ni phytomining trials, mainly undertaken in Albania and USA (Bani et al, 2015; Li et al, 2003), while the agronomy of <10 species has been tested in temperate regions (Nkrumah et al, 2016). Nickel phytomining has high economic potential; however, large-scale demonstrations are needed to provide ‘real-life’ evidence for commercial operations (van der Ent et al, 2015). Unrealised opportunities exist in tropical regions for commercial scale Ni phytomining. To date, the agronomy of tropical ‘metal crops’ has not been tested. Suggestions have been made at various times that there may be a recurrence of lodes similar to those at Kalgoorlie in the country to the south of the Golden Mile, but, so far as is known, there has been no geological evidence to support these suggestions apart from the possible extension of the younger quartz-dolerite greenstone in this direction.Geological mapping carried out by the writer in the Coolgardie district in 1946, provided some additional geological evidence to support this claim, and the ideas then held have since been expanded and are now considered to be sufficiently advanced to present them as concrete suggestions. As will be seen from the following pages, the critical area for lode prospecting is Hannan's Lake, where the basement rocks may include younger quartz dolerite greenstone, which, although perhaps distributed over a smaller area than at Kalgoorlie, could, on structural grounds, have a similar fracture system and similar ore deposition.There is little need to stress the importance discoveries in this area would have in prolonging the life of the field, and stimulating the post-war gold mining revival.Previous Work: Only the publications having a direct bearing on the preparation of this paper are given in the list of selected references, but the writer is very conscious of the fact that much other geological work has been carried out in the Kalgoorlie district since its discovery, by the W.A. Department of Mines, by mining companies, and others, all of which has contributed to the present knowledge of the field, and acknowledgment of the value of this work is given herewith. In presenting the suggestions in this paper a broad structural control of ore deposition is assumed, but this has already been established in other parts of the goldfields of Western Australia, including adjacent areas. In the early nineteen thirties, the Western Mining Corporation commenced work on the basis that there was a close relationship between geological structure and auriferous ore deposition, and a similar approach was first made by the Geological Survey of Western Australia in the South Yilgarn in 1935. These ideas were further developed during later surveys, particularly in the North Yilgarn and the Mount Margaret Goldfield.During the Coolgardie Survey in 1946, broad structural mapping was done in greater detail than before, and the structural ideas were implemented and further developed, leading to some success.Other work to which particular acknowledgment is given is that of Stiltwell, Gustafson and Miller, Forman, Prider and Finucane, at Kalgoorlie, and that of Honman in the Kalgoorlie-Coolgardie district, references to which are given at the end of this paper.Valuable constructive criticism of this paper has been given by Professor E. de C. A key environmental management issue associated with mining projects is tailing disposal. In high rainfall environments this is particularly challenging and generally requires the discharge of excess water from a tailing dam to adjacent streams or coastal waters. Such discharges can potentially have adverse impacts on downstream water quality and the environmental values associated with these waters, such as providing a drinking water supply for local villagers, maintaining a fisheries resource or protecting a fish species of high conservation significance. An alternative to the construction and operation of a conventional tailing dam is Deep Sea Tailing Placement (DSTP). The key features of such a system are:Discharge of the tailing slurry at considerable depth (approximately 120 - 150 m) below the oceanÆs surface. This requires a pipeline to be laid from the process plant to a mix tank, where the tailing is mixed with seawater and entrained air released. The pipeline then continues down the ocean floor to the required discharge depth, which is below the surface mixed layer and the euphotic zone. After discharge, formation of a density current which continues to descend along the ocean floor as long as the slope is sufficiently steep. Final deposition of the tailing in an area where the slope of the ocean floor is insufficient to maintain the density current. This typically occurs at depths of more than 800 m. Water quality issues associated with DSTP include: Impacts on the oceanic water column due to the formation of subsurface plumes which break away from the descending density current. The occurrence of elevated concentrations of contaminants in the interstitial waters of the deposited tailing solids. Fluxes of contaminants from the tailing deposits into the overlying oceanic water column. This paper discusses the water quality aspects of DSTP with particular reference to a case study in Papua New Guinea. The evaluations undertaken as part of the DSTP impact assessment included consideration of both the short- and long-term chemical behaviour of contaminants and bioassays, within the appropriate water quality assessment framework.

The Mt Todd Gold Project is located 42 km northwest of the township of Katherine within the Northern Territory of Australia. It is situated in the southeastern portion of the Pine Creek Geosyncline. The Batman gold deposit, the largest of several deposits at Mt Todd, hosts an identified mineral resource of 92.9 million tonnes (Mt) grading 1.4 grams/tonne (g/t) as at 31 December 1993. Host rocks at Batman are assigned to the Early Proterozoic Burrell Creek Formation, comprising greywacke and siltstone interbedded with shale. Gold mineralisation is associated with a very broad zone of sheeted and stockwork quartz-sulphide veins that occupy a corridor of intense brittle fracture and faulting. A conceptual model of formation involves the dilation of joints and micro-faults within overlying sediments during sinistral movement along a basement shear zone. Synchronous granite intrusion generated convective circulation of crustal fluids through the sedimentary pile resulting in the formation of auriferous quartz veins within favourable structures. The Batman zone of mineralisation is not directly related to fold structures which typify several other major gold deposits within the Pine Creek Geosyncline.

The Main lode in the Anwia Gold deposit is difficult to interpret due partly to the fact that three separate grid and drill hole orientations exist over the area and partly due to a lack of understanding of the controls on the high-grade mineralisation. Scattered high gold grades and multiple veining orientations add to the confusion. Sectional interpretations of the lode are often misleading due to the multiple orientations of drilling. Initial attempts to define a high-grade constrained geological model were not successful due to the inability to establish any geological continuity that would hold together in three dimensions. As a consequence the initial geostatistical domaining for the Main lode at Anwia comprised a simple broad mineralised envelope split by the weathering profiles. Subsequently an analysis correlating subjective qualitative logging information with grade plus utilisation of LeapfrogTM software, together with extensive geological re-interpretation resulted in the definition of a coherent high-grade shoot within the Main lode. The resource was re-estimated including this new domain as a high-grade hard boundary. Estimations on both models were carried out using uniform conditioning, which is a recoverable resource estimation methodology that estimates tonnages and metal above a series of cut-offs for SMU (selective mining unit) sized blocks. This paper compares the tonnages and metal contents that are calculated from the two estimation runs, both at a zero cut-off and a series of higher cut-offs. The results confirm that the estimation methodology has been implemented correctly as the tonnage and metal content at zero cut-off is the same for both models. The resource tabulations and grade tonnage curves predicted by the two models highlight the differences that can occur at higher cut-offs when realistic high-grade domaining is implemented. The results also reinforce the point that recoverable resource models are intended to address selectivity issues and are not substitutes for good geological modelling. Recoverable resource techniques, such as uniform conditioning, will not correctly estimate high-grade zones that have not been explicitly modelled.

A projected image is not always a true representation of a situation, or indeed an industry. This is often the case of the mining and minerals industry, which has frequently been portrayed in a negative light with a male dominance stigma attached. However, these issues can be combated for both the industry and its future, current undergraduate students, through undergraduate industry experience. In particular, vacation work enables female students to dispel many myths surrounding the industry and realise that the mining and minerals field offers career development for both genders. This paper will discuss how vacation work enables students to make important career decisions even before they have graduated. Industry experience provides undergraduates with the opportunity to gain practical knowledge relevant to their field of study. Additionally it allows students to observe the nature of the industry and the sacrifices necessary to advance careers. The prior insights into an industry are relevant to all students, but particularly female students, who might otherwise be dissuaded from a career in mining. This paper is written from the perspective of two female undergraduate students studying Mining and Minerals Processing Engineering.

Woodcutters is a polymetallic vein-style deposit hosted by sediments of the Palacoproterozoic Whites Formation which forms part of the sedimentary sequence in the central Pine Creek Geosyncline. Past production and identified resources total over eight million tonnes at 5.5 per cent lead, 12.1 per cent zinc and 110 gA silver. The local geology is influenced by Archaean basement highs; the Rum Jungle and Waterhouse Complexes. Unconformably overlying basement are interbedded clastic and crystalline carbonate units (Batchelor Group) representing cyclic changes in the depositional environment. These exhibit onlapping features with the underlying rocks. Sediments of the overlying Frances Creek Group suggest a quiet period during subsidence and subsequent increase in water depth (the carbonaceous dolomitic shales and the interbedded dololutites of the Whites Formation) followed by proximal uplift resulting in the inundation of turbiditic flows (Acacia Gap Quartzite). All of the Palaeoproterozoic rocks show evidence of being affected by penecontemporaneous, basement circling faults with steep dips. The stress regime during the deposition of the Frances Creek Group was characterised by alternating episodes of thrusting and transpression. Periods of relaxation also occurred. The compression resulted in major NS strike-slip (transpressional) faulting, en-echelon NNE trending folds and NW-SE tensional cross faults. Thrusting produced N-S striking, steep dipping reverse faults and a possible decollement immediately above the Batchelor Group. Relaxation is evidenced by the intrusion of lamprophyre dykes and dolerite sills (Zamu Dolerite). Mineralisation at Woodcutters occurred in faults within the Whites Formation, probably synchronous with deformation and the deposition of the upper parts of the Frances Creek Group. Greenschist facies metamorphism occurred as the rocks were further buried. Several massive sulphide bodies occur at Woodcutters. A number of features influence the location and shape of these bodies. They are: ò the N-S transpressional faults and in particular associated dilation zones; ò intersection of the N-S transpressional faults with the axial plane of the NNE trending Woodcutters Anticline; ò intersection of the N-S transpressional faults with the NW-SE cross-faults; ò intersection of dololutite rich units with the NS transpressional faults where local replacement takes place; ò thickening of the lithological units in the vicinity of the anticlinal axis; and ò the anticline doubly plunging to both the north and south. The mineralisation exhibits vein-like features as well as epigenetic textures. Its boundaries are sharp, its thickness varies rapidly down dip and along strike, and no alteration halo exists though stringer veins of quartz-carbonate-pyrite ¦ sphalerite/galena occur in close proximity. A number of sulphide mineral assemblages have been recognised, each separated by periods of deformation and partially replacing the earlier assemblages. Vertically continuous zonation patterns highlight the presence of rich galena-sphalerite-silver in zones of maximum dilation and pyrite-arsenopyrite-gold concentrated at the along strike peripheries. The genetic model proposed has the mineralisation occurring whilst the transpressional regime was active. It was deposited from the same fluid that elsewhere in the Geosyncline formed the stratiform deposits higher in the sedimentary pile. Hydrocarbons sourced from the organic-rich Whites

Today the application of computer programs for planning of mine-ventilation and for safety- analysis of ventilation systems is widespread practice in German mining. The computer program for network calculat- ion, developed at the "Mine Ventilation Testing Centre of the Westfalische Berggewerkschaft- skasse" allows the distribution of airflow and pressure in mines to be calculated. In a physically well founded manner it takes into account the natural ventilation as well as changes of volume-flow in the mine, which both are dependent on pressure and temperature. Compared to an incompressible treatment of the mine air these circumstances are of increasing importance with the increase of depth, air temperatures and fan-pressures'. This especial- ly holds for the calculation of airflows during failures of fans or for assessing the influence of open mine-fires on ventilation. The application of the program is very easy and its structure is made to fit the requirements of practice. For instance it takes into account the fan characteristics of all fans. For each planning calculated air- flows in all mine workings are compared to those of an eligible basic calculation or to measured airflows. In addition for the

Projected cooling requirements for ERPM led to the first proposals for the large- scale use of ice for mine cooling in the early 1980's. Following successful research into ice conveying and ice melting a large ice plant was commissioned at Harmony in 1985 and a much larger 6000 ton per day plant is presently under construction at ERPM. A brief description of the mining project is given, followed by general descriptions of the surface ice plants and the ice conveying system, the systems for using the ice for mine cooling, and the control of the whole ice cooling System.

The purposes of defining the mining environment for underground mass mining and the uses of characterisation data are outlined. The requirements for data in the areas of geology, surface and groundwater hydrology, topography and environmental constraints and geotechnical studies are identified. Emphasis is then placed on the collection and interpretation of geotechnical data for establishing the in situ stress regime and for rock mass characterisation. Methods used for diamond drilling, core logging, borehole logging, data analysis and presentation, rock mass modelling and rock mass classification are outlined. Finally, recent and potential advances in the state-of-the-art are identified in areas such as geophysical methods, measurement while drilling, computerised data collection and analysis, rock mass modelling, in situ stress measurement data presentation and interpretation, and some applications of rock mass characterisation data.

Traditionally gold producers had built up hedge books to protect themselves against adverse changes in the commodity price, but diversified mining groups were staunchly opposed to hedging in any shape or form. The situation has evolved over the past few years. Gold miners have been reducing the size of their hedge books in line with the rising gold price. Commentators have talked about ædouble-digit dehedgingÆ and have suggested that this is the final countdown for gold hedge books. It sounded as if the era of hedging by mining companies was drawing to a close. But as appearances can sometimes be misleading, we decided to find out what mining companies were actually doing. Companies listed on stock exchanges are now obliged to give details of their derivatives holdings in their annual reports. Two or three years ago there was no such obligation. Our reality check was based on the latest annual report issued by three multinational mining groups; two with diametrically opposed views on hedging (Rio Tinto and Barrick) and the third (BHP Billiton) with an intermediate position. This snapshot of their derivative positions at a point in time revealed that Barrick and BHP Billiton have substantial derivatives positions (worth billions of dollars) to protect against adverse changes in foreign exchange rates and interest rates. Moreover Barrick has recently started hedging against increases in fuel prices. Despite its opposition to hedging, Rio Tinto has derivative positions worth several hundred million dollars, but these are primarily a legacy from various mergers and acquisitions over recent years or were entered into as a condition of project financing. Lastly we were surprised to discover that Barrick was holding asset-backed commercial paper (ABCP). So the idea that mining companies donÆt hedge their risks is just another urban myth.

The successful dissolution of the valuable metal components of a solid phase is often a basic requirement for a successful hydrometallurgical treatment process. Sulphide concentrates are often an intermediate product in the production of refined metals. These concentrates need to be further processed to realise the contained metal values in a useful form. Pyrometallurgical techniques have tended to dominate, at least the initial treatment of metal sulphide concentrates. The technology described, Activox«, has been developed specifically for the hydrometallurgical treatment of these sulphide mineral concentrates, in particular those containing copper, nickel or gold. The Activox« dissolution technology coupled with the use of existing, or newly developed, downstream processing techniques, offers alternative processing options for the recovery of full value, saleable metal products. The technology is suitable for application down to relatively small scales opening up the opportunity for on-site production of metals even at modest scale mining Operations.
