Underground mining operations on Kalgoorlie's Golden Mile were suspended in 1976, suffering the combined effects of low gold prices and grades. A subsequent substantial increase in the gold price led to the decision by Kalgoorlie Mining Associates to reopen their mines in 1979. The two shafts selected for access required excessive maintenance. The geological assessment and development parameters prescribed have been successfully used to establish reserves to maintain production at a 390 000 tonnes per annum rate. While ore reserve grade is being maintained from primary stoping sources, supplementary lower grade ore is drawn from remnant pillars and stopes at lower cost.Performance by the workforce has reached levels previously attained and a record tonnage was hoisted in the fourth year after recommencement.Keywords : Golden Mile lodes, geological research, payruns, cut and fill, mill holes, gold price, ore grade, amalgamation.

This paper describes the method of extracting sill pillars within the underground operation from under unconsolidated mullock fill at the Cracow Gold Mine. This pillar recovery method was initially successfully used to recover sill pillars at Crusader Mine, Western Australia in 2001. Globally significant resources have been sterilised due to the placement of loose rock fill above crown pillars and within adjacent stopes. The method described here offers significant opportunities to increase recovery of sill pillar recoveries.The royal orebody sill pillars at Cracow Gold Mine form a significant resource. Extraction of these pillars needed to be undertaken with minimal ore dilution and maximum ore recovery. The application that was selected to consolidate the loose mullock fill above each pillar used an injection grouting process (Minova FB200).Cracow Gold Mine mining method is bottom up bench mining. The pillars were left within the orebody to allow for stoping to commence whilst the decline was being developed. Due to the remainder of the orebody being extracted the only access to consolidate the backfill was from the sill pillar extraction level. Numerous problems were encountered and overcome from product selection and trial, system of injection to extraction.This pillar recovery process achieved a 95 per cent recovery of the sill pillar compared with an estimated 60 per cent typical for other mining options.CITATION:Potts, L, Mutton, V and Joyce, D, 2012. The use of mercury for amalgamation has been an integral part of the small-scale gold mining industry in developing countries owing to its low investment cost, simplicity of the technique and high gold recovery. However, its impact on health and environmental hazards have not been given the attention they deserve. In spite of the growing awareness and concerns over the mercury pollution problem by regul-atory authorities, precautionary measures such as bans on the use of mercury in some countries have been largely ineffective.This paper first reviews some of the mechanisms of mercury poll-ution, and mercury toxicity which varies according to its oxidation state. It then describes how mercury released to the atmosphere would go through the "Mercury Cycle". Compar-isons have also been made with previously measured mercury levels in small scale Papua New Guinean miners with their counterparts in other developing countries.

Benthic macroinvertebrates are used to illustrate these impacts, and to investigate natural recovery in affected streams. In Charming Creek, a severely impacted stream in the Buller District, the macroinvertebrate community recovers diversity and the proportion of sensitive species (EPT) in the community is more significant with increasing downstream distance from the source of AMD. This is most likely due to dilution of AMD contaminated water by tributaries to the Charming Creek mainstream. Other impacted systems with less dilution from tributaries did not display similar levels of recovery. The effectiveness of remediation products BauxsolÖ and Zeolite was investigated using laboratory trials. Both products mitigated the toxicity of AMD and enhanced the survival of mayflies exposed to AMD contaminated water. Such products may be of use in the New Zealand environment but are likely to be most effective in conjunction with other systems (eg wetlands). Mitigating the impacts of AMD on stream ecosystems needs to include systems to directly address water chemistry issues (low pH, high metal concentrations) as a component of a holistic approach to restoring environmental conditions.

Conventional batch cell and FASTFLOT pilot plant studies of reverse flotation of coarse marcasite and pyrite (100 - 400 μm) to reduce the sulphidic sulphur content of a rutile concentrate, were undertaken. The batch cell experiments found no significant improvement in sulphur removal with acid wash and copper activation of marcasite and pyrite. Batch cell trials also identified potential difficulties of conventional mechanical cell plants operated at 40 per cent w/w solids. The FASTFLOT 250 B-2 pilot plant trials indicated that with a 0.6 - 0.7 per cent w/w feed sulphur content, target product grade can be met on a routine basis by a three-stage FASTFLOT plant floating coarse marcasite and pyrite. The trials found that 150 g/t PAX dosage and 15 minutes conditioning time are adequate reagentisation for 40 per cent w/w solids feed to the FASTFLOT plant.

The energy supply in the 21st century is still secured by coal. According to estimates of the International Energy Agency (IEA), coal will have the same importance as oil for the world-wide supply of energy until 2030. Coal is also an important element of EU policy, its future use is closely linked to effectively addressing the environmental challenges it poses. Hard and brown coal represent approximately 80 per cent of European Union (EU) reserves of fossil fuels and coal utilisation can co-exist with the development of power generation based on renewables. Europe is the world's third largest consumer of coal behind China and the United States.The Czech Republic is poor in energy resources except for coal. Brown coal is relatively abundant (mineable reserves estimated at 1800 Mt, output 48 Mt/a) and significant quantities of hard coal (mineable reserves 900 Mt, 13 Mt/a), much of it suitable for coke production, are also present.Severoceske Doly (SD Company), the biggest Czech coal mining company (22 Mt/a, 48.6 per cent Czech market share) and one of the biggest in Europe, reinforces despite the last deep crisis in the Czech and European economies its long-standing stable and strong market and financial position. From 2009, the SD Company co-owns, with partners, a brown-coal mining company MIBRAG (21 Mt/a). SD Company invests in large mining equipment (eg new giant spreaders and bucket-wheel excavators, extension of overland belt conveyors), rebuilds and upgrades mining and processing installations, auxiliary and other machinery. We should see the investment we make today in tomorrow's mining and reclamation as an opportunity and not as a burden. They enable to make our position more resistant in the longer term. Projects focused on the environment and operational safety went hand in hand with these efforts.R&D activities relate to technical innovations, improvements of mining equipment, research and evaluation of conditions for extracting coal seam and/or overburden and mitigation of environmental impacts, utilisation of coal in new products. The company spends considerable amounts on reclaiming affected land and creating a new post-mining landscape.Our dialogue with influential stakeholders in the region where we operate contributes to the long-term improvement in the quality of life of local residents. Such dialogue with communities in the last ten years has been instrumental for confidence building. SD Company helps to develop many projects of towns and villages in its vicinity. The stable and transparent relations with our neighbours are in accordance with our basic principles of corporate social responsibility.

The three systems of mining in use in the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales are bord and pillar with or without subsequent extrac- tion, longwall and shortwall. Bord and pillar with extraction is regarded as the conventional system. The application of continuous miners and powered roof supports (Shortwall) to coal min- ing has, grown in recent years from something of an oddity among extraction systems to an acceptable and viable approach in certain min- ing environments. The method can be applied in a high proportion of situations where normal pillar extraction is practised with advantages over the conventional approach. These advantages extend to both safety and efficiency aspects and also include better utilization of coal reserves. It holds hope for further gain in efficiency because its simplicity of layout lends itself to achieving the goal of contin- uous haulage towards which operators are always striving.

Surface subsidence caused by coal mining operations was the subject of a very successful symposium organised by the Illawarra Branch of the Australas- ian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in February, 1973. This symposium dealt with the principles of subsidence and overseas experiences arising out of underground mining. Since that time the i eew South Wales Department of Mineral Resources and Development (formerly the Depart- ment of Mines) has incorporated in the approval for pillar extraction certain conditions related to the monitoring of surface movement. Surveys and plans are required to be kept at mines where total or partial extraction of coal takes place. This paper traces the monitoring of surface movement in the Northern Coalfields of New South Wales over the past ten years. Reference is made to the National Coal Board's Subsidence Engineers' Handbook (1975) and how the guidelines expressed therein have been Beneficial.

In a modern economy there is a compelling case why governments should not own property rights to mineral deposits. Assuming they do, however, governments will use these constitutional rights to raise revenue. They have two basic instruments to achieve this; a royalty charge on price or a rent tax on income/profits. On the one hand, a royalty charge creates a 'deadweight loss' to society by increasing cut-off grades and decreasing the life-of-mine. They are also regressive. However, they are easy to administer. On the other hand, a rent tax avoids the problem of 'deadweight loss'; it does not impact on the life-of-mine because the tax structure is neutral. But, they are difficult to administer correctly, particularly in the determination of rents and the definition of mining per se. If rents are incorrectly determined capital markets are distorted. And, if mining activities are incorrectly defined, downstream activities could be adversely affected.

The Mt Keith ultramafic intrusive extends for about 200 kilometres from Agnew in the south to Wiluna in the north. It forms the host for a number of nickel sulphide orebodies including Mt Keith and Honeymoon Well. Long fibre minerals are associated with the orebodies. The presence of these minerals impacts on the issue of tailings disposal from several standpoints, particularly the slurry beaching properties and dust generation from dry beaches. Central thickened discharge (CTD) is an innovative method of tailings disposal that involves stacking tailings in a low conical hill instead of storing them in cells. In appropriate circumstances this leads to savings in capital costs and operating expenditure. The method was introduced to Australia in 1981, and is currently employed at four operating mines, Elura and Peak Gold, both at Cobar in NSW, McArthur River in the Northern Territory, and Union Reefs near Pine Creek, also in the Northern Territory. It is the proposed method for Century Zinc and Ernest Henry, both in Queensland. The paper describes laboratory test work and design parameters for the application of the method to tailings disposal at Honeymoon Well and compares them with comparable data for other CTD systems. Of particular relevance for design purposes are beach slope, density, and water recovery. Wind tunnel tests were conducted on the Honeymoon Well tailings samples to investigate dust generation from the dry beach surface and it was concluded that dust generation from an undisturbed beach would not occur because of crusting.

With a view to characterising activated carbons with respect to their ability to adsorb gold from cyanide solutions, an attempt was made to establish correlations between the equilibrium capacity constant of the activated carbon for gold (k value) and five other parameters. These parameters were percentage ash content, iodine number, methylene blue value, surface area, and pH respectively. Twenty four different proprietary brand activated carbon products were examined, the correlations being established by means of linear regression analysis. It was shown that a significant correlation only existed between k and pH value. This was interpreted in terms of the presence of oxide complexes on the activated carbon surface. Further test specifications as developed at the Anglo American Research Laboratories are also outlined with a view to the selection of activated carbons suitable for use in' a carbon-in-pulp operation. Methods for assessing both the capacity and the kinetic response of carbons for gold adsorption are presented, while the measurement of attrition resistance, particle size distribution and moisture and solubles content is also outlined. The measurement of the capacity constant for gold adsorption together with attrition resistance are considered to be necessary in the initial selection of a suitable carbon.

The northern Drummond and Bowen basins region represents one of AustraliaÆs most prospective areas for epithermal vein and stockwork style gold deposits, with both low and high sulfidation epithermal mineralisation known in the region. 3D-GIS reconstructions, numerical and probabilistic modelling (UDEC, FLAC 3D and WofE) are used here to develop a better understanding of the controls operating on the mineral systems of the region and are aimed at enhancing predictive capabilities. Indian iron ores with less than 62 per cent Fe are currently unexploited, except for a few sectors which export them to foreign countries. It is anticipated that by 2012 the countryÆs domestic steel production is likely to rise to the tune of 60 million tonnes per annum. To meet this requirement, it is necessary to utilise not only the existing high-grade deposits but it is also necessary to look into exploiting the leftover iron ores of lower grades. Hence, reserves with Fe content 62 per cent and below (particularly the ores with In the present paper, an attempt has been made to beneficiate three different types of low-grade iron ores selected from three different parts (states) of the country. In the paper, alternative routes for beneficiation and effective utilisation have been tested using different techniques in the laboratory in an attempt to match their (Al2O3/SiO2) ratio after thorough characterisation and liberation studies. The paper also encompasses the geological formations, occurrences and distribution of Indian iron ores as well as highlighting the problems associated with the fines, possible metallurgical routes, and their market segregation from the perspective of end users.

An approximate rapid design system for tunnel liners and underground structures is presented which permits the effects of structure geometry and stiffness, rock quality in terms of its deformation modulus, and the applied system loading to be entered as data to produce direct designs conforming to stress limitations, optimum reinforcement requirements and restraints on section dimensions. An 'equivalent column' concept is introduced for modelling the rock mass in contact with the structure. Only the rock treatment is given in detail but the results of sensitivity analyses, with reference to rock quality, for a typical liner design are given and these results related to a number of empirical design approaches.

The process uses sodium hydroxide and sodium nitrate reagents as in conventional Harris refining plants, selectively removing the arsenic to the caustic phase at an operating temperature of 420-450¦C. A novel feature of the process concept is continuous treatment of loaded caustic slag for recovery of arsenic as a sandy crystal product suitable for further processing to arsenic trioxide. A large pilot plant was constructed and operated over a period of 3 years to develop materials handling techniques and equipment components and to prove the concept. Stable operations were achieved at equivalent capacities of 200 tonne/yr arsenic removal. The process is being considered in plans for expansion of bullion softening capacity at Port Pirie.

Colombia is an example of a nation where mining makes a significant contribution to local and national economies. Due to the abundant resources present in the ground, there are good prospects for further development. However, the impacts of mining projects can include reduced access to good quality freshwater for other economic activities and/or biodiversity preservation (Ossa et al., 2018). As well as the water management challenges common to all mining regions globally, Colombia has particular challenges associated with its biophysical and socio-political traits. Land use change in many regions is dynamic including rapid development of agriculture and the development and abandonment of small scale mines. The value of ecosystem services provided by prospective mining regions also creates challenges in particular with regard to the páramos, the headwater wetlands from which about 70% of Colombia’s water supply has originated (Cleef 1981). Colombia also has particular challenges related to strong preconceptions about mining and its impacts on water. On the one hand, there is recognition that new large-scale mines are important for Colombia’s economy; on the other, there is deep distrust of the sector’s ability to operate with minimal adverse impacts (Gutiérrez-Gómez, 2017). Hence, any impact assessment is likely to face high levels of scepticism and scrutiny. Summarising the work of McIntyre et al. (2018), this abstract proposes a framework for assessing and communicating risks to regional water resources arising from the impacts of mines. The framework outputs aim to provide government and other stakeholder groups the scientific evidence needed to inform their viewpoints about mining development in the selected region, and a baseline from which to design a program of priority scientific research. The effect of blast vibration on highwall stability is a common concern for many open pit mines. Vibration in such a case is a typical near-field blast vibration situation. Vibration modelling in the near-field of a blast requires consideration of both the amplitude and frequency attenuation of waveforms with distance. Most existing blast vibration models are designed for far-field vibration and do not simulate the frequency attenuation and its effect on waveform shape. With the advent of electronic detonators it is desirable to quantify the effects of blast delay on the amplitude as well as the frequency of blast vibrations. A suitable modelling tool is proposed here. At present, a blast vibration model with double attenuations(amplitude and frequency) has been developed at Orica. The present model simulates the amplitude and frequency attenuations separately using different transfer functions. The amplitude attenuation is modelled according to the non-linear relation between the peak particle velocity (PPV) and the charge weight scaled distance established from the signature hole vibration. The frequency attenuation is modelled with the signal broadening based on KjartanssonÆs transfer function û a linear model for attenuation of waves. The model is capable of taking multiple sets of signature waveforms as input to improve the modelling accuracy of the wave propagation in the geology at a site. The screening effect of the earlier firing holes in the path of a later firing hole is taken into account on not only the amplitude, but also frequency attenuation. The present blast vibration model is suitable for modelling both near-field and far-field blast vibrations. It yields reasonable agreement with measured field data for the near-field vibration examples discussed.

In feasibility studies the choice of optimum cut-off grade is typically based on an evaluation of tonnage grade curves and manual design of stopes at one or two cut-off grades. In the industry these stope designs are usually based on break-even cut-off grades, but there is little consensus on what cost and price assumptions ought to be included. A new tool for automated stope design has been developed that generates sets of stope shapes for a nominated range of cut-off grades, or depending on the nature of the mineralisation, cut-off values based on net smelter return calculations in the block model. The stope design procedure includes constraints in stope and pillar geometry for the selected mining method and can be used to evaluate sublevel interval and sensitivities to other design parameters in the specific geological and geotechnical environment. These ænested stopesÆ are analogous to ænested pitsÆ in open cut design, and can be used as a key input in the æhill of valueÆ methodology for the evaluation of the optimum cut-off grade in underground design. The results of many consulting studies indicate that a break-even cut-off grade will not be the optimum cut-off grade. A particular benefit of the new stope design tool is that the design rules used to establish stope shapes in the feasibility study can then be used in mine production, in an optimal and repeatable method. This methodology is being advanced in the AMIRA P884 PRIMO project, which is a new research collaboration coordinated by AMIRA International. The project has brought together active research groups in Australia and Canada, with the goal of developing a flexible framework and set of software tools for optimisation in underground mine design.

This paper discusses the significant land use changes that have occurred in the Latrobe Valley during 150 years of white occupation. The developments and changes were haphazard and made with little thought as to their setting or their environmental consequences. As a result many landscape and land management problems have not been addressed.This paper contends that the mistakes will continue unless an overall plan for the landscape of the area is developed and implemented. The concept of 'Greening the Valley' is introduced. It aims to provide focus for a comprehensive co-ordinated plan which caters for the need to restore the landscape and the need to provide for future land use. The plan will seek to draw on three major landscape features of the Latrobe Valley: the natural setting of the hills, rivers, valleys and forests; the agricultural land use including the forestry plantations; and the industrial complexes and urban areas.Rehabilitation of mining areas is a key element of the plan but must be put in a regional context and not be treated as an isolated function of a single organisation. A major challenge will be to integrate the worked out areas into useful and significant landscapes. The paper concludes by explaining the process that will be followed in an attempt to realise the concept.
