This paper deals with the modernisation of the brakes on an electrically coupled Blair multi-rope hoist and covers the removal of the old calliper brakes and hydraulic control system, and its replacement with brake discs, disc braking units and hydraulic control systems. The paper covers the braking requirements of the hoist, which is made up of two electrically coupled single-drum hoists, together with the theory behind the choice of brakes and control systems supplied. The paper also covers the project logistics that were required in order to install and commission the new brakes and control systems with the minimum disruption to production on the only rock hoist on a major production shaft. Items covered include the modifications to civil works, pre-installation of bearing lubrication systems, brake discs and hydraulics and the interfacing of the new hydraulic control system to the existing electric control system. It had to be designed to be compatible to a new electric drive and control system due for installation at the end of 2005.

Gwalia Consolidated Ltd has been in the mining industry for about 15 years, yet its key wholly owned Greenbushes Mine has a history dating back to the last century. Similarly Gwalia Consolidated's associate, Sons of Gwalia Ltd owns the historic Sons of Gwalia and Marvel Loch Mines with Sons of Gwalia celebrating its centenary this year. This durability is a testament to the quality of the orebodies concerned and the massive technological achievements over this time which have enabled each of these mines to maintain their competitiveness. While Sons of Gwalia and Marvel Loch were and continue to be gold mines, the wholly owned Greenbushes Mine has survived and in fact prospered through the development of alternative products from its rich and unique pegmatite. Similarly, for Gwalia Consolidated to grow and prosper it will be necessary to expand the current portfolio of products and operations. The Greenbushes Mine has already given Gwalia world `No 1' status in both the supply of primary tantalite concentrates and lithium minerals (spodumene). The asset base contributed by Gwalia's gold investments assisted in the recapitalisation of the Greenbushes assets to fully develop their potential. Industrial minerals and strategic metals were of interest to Gwalia as these markets are relatively small and it is possible to develop an influential if not dominant position in the market with a quality asset. Capital expenditure to develop such projects are also usually in the order of $10 m to $20 m, a manageable range relative to Gwalia's size.

Following the success of calcrete sampling at Challenger, calcrete sampling has been widely adopted as the primary exploration technique for gold exploration, in the Gawler Craton. Calcrete is uniformly distributed over large areas and produces discrete gold anomalies. This allows drilling to focus on specific gold anomalous targets. However, despite widespread use of calcrete sampling, very little is known of the origin of calcrete in the Gawler Craton, and the link between calcrete gold anomalies and primary mineralisation. In an attempt to understand this association Lisa Gibbons recently completed an honours project at the Old Well Prospect approximately 45 km SSE of Tarcoola. Her work is part of a collaboration between CRCLEME, MESA and MIM Exploration. At Old Well, a calcrete anomaly (>10 ppb Au)covers an area approximately 7 km x 2 km with a peak value of 97 ppb Au. The study looked at the regolith as a whole, processes of its formation and nature of mineralisation within it. She was able to combine previous calcrete and drilling results with her own observations. The results from this study highlighted problems in relating surface calcrete anomalies to in situ gold mineralisation.

In order to make good decisions, as to whether large diameter raise bored shafts can be constructed in blocky rock at a particular location, mine planners, management, geotechnical engineers and contractors must understand and consider a range of geotechnical issues. Firstly, mine management must ensure that adequate time and resources are available to find appropriate shaft sites. Deep weathering, adverse structures, groundwater, etc might mean that the most desirable location, with respect to other mine development, might not be suitable. Special site investigation drilling, etc may be necessary. Even then, alternative construction options might be necessary, other than just reaming through to the surface. A site investigation borehole should then be drilled to investigate specific and general ground conditions along the raise alignment. Often, only small sections of weak blocky rock dictate raise stability. While the empirical McCracken and Stacey method is typically used in Australia to assess raise stability and assess geotechnical risk, until recently it had no published performance data.An Australian database of raise performance now exists and is presented below, courtesy of an industry survey by the Eastern Australian Ground Control Group. Raise diameter and ground conditions (in terms of a lower bound Qr value) is presented for 50 cases versus raise performance.

The problem of comparison of island arc's andesites in terms of petrochemical data is exa- mined. It is definitely established that only two main factors exist controlling the petroche- mical variety of the Kurile arc's andesites.Ori final multivariate statistical technique and computer software are used to extract these fac- tors. It is shown as well that the chemical com- position of igneous rocks depends on the type and structure of the Earth's crust. The follo- ~cing interpretation is proposed for the two factors describing petrochemistry of andesites: the first one is the depth to the Benioff seis- mofocal zone and the second one is supposed to indicate the position of the peripheral magma chambers. The basic trends of variations in the chemical composition components depending on the changes in the controlling factors are de- Tcnnined.

The ores of the Golden Mile exhibit considerable complexity. As a consequence, the operating company, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM), considered it important to develop a coherent database of information describing the nature of the many ore lodes in terms of (1) rock properties and mineralogical content, including relative proportions, grain size, associations and deportment of key elements between minerals, (2) the relative behaviour of consituent minerals in various stages of processing and (3) the nature of the final products and key intermediate streams. The paper describes a sequence of metallurgical tests covering comminution, flotation, gravity concentration, leaching and calcining, carried out on three lodes of the Golden Mile. Key samples generated by the testing were subjected to comprehensive size-by-elemental assaying and QEM*SEM mineralogical determinations of sulphide and precious metal associations. Significant differences between lodes were identified, and the impact of these differences on processing is discussed.

Grade control is a process of maximising value and reducing risk, through the delivery of quality tonnes to the mill via the accurate definition of ore and waste. It essentially comprises data collection, integration and interpretation; local resource estimation; stope design; supervision of mining and stockpile management. The foundation of all grade control programs should be that of geological understanding led by high-quality mapping and sampling to drive appropriate estimation strategies and mining. Gold veins show various complex features relating to erratic grade distribution (nugget effect), variable geometry and internal architecture. These include variations in dip, strike and width, late-stage faulting/shearing effects and geometallurgy. Such variations generally require close geological understanding to ensure optimum grade, minimal dilution and maximum mining recovery. A well designed grade control program will prove to management and stakeholders that by applying geological knowledge, the mining process can be more efficient and cost effective. This paper reviews the issues of grade control in underground gold mines and focuses on integrated mapping and sampling through three case studies.

I offer some comments which might complement the valuable recent paper by De Angelis et al (1987), on the newly discovered nickel-copper deposit at Radio Hill.The authors have accepted subdivisions and correlations by Hickman (1977, 1983) although they are disputed (Fitton, Horwitz and Sylvester, 1975; Horwitz, 1979; Horwitz and Guj, 1986).Also, in my opinion, more plausible correlations of the Sholl Belt with Whim Creek Belt have been shown, but not discussed, in Hudson and Horwitz (1986, Figure 1). Our suggested correlations and subdivisions have appeared in publications and reports which are not readily available, but it is gratifying to note that many of the observations and conclusions of De Angelis et al are consistent with our conclusions of the Whim Creek Belt.The units of the Sholl Belt (of Hickman, 1983), between the Sholl Fault (Shear Zone) and the overlying Mt Bruce Supergroup to the south, equate well with units of the Whim Creek Belt. A basalt, characterised by an abundance of vesicles and similar in many ways to the Wararnbi Basalt of Fitton, Horwitz and Sylvester (I975), is well developed at the base of the succession, particularly in the southern part of the area (Figure 1). It is overlain by acid tuffs (locally metamorphosed, such as at Whundoo Mine) and associated acid and mafic lavas, similar to those of the Mons Cupri area. The mafics in the succession are marked by the absence of the numerous cherty sedimentary intercalations, such as the Marble Bar Chert, which occur in the Warrawoona Group; and they also lack the intense chertification that is prevalent in all parts of the proven areas of Warrawoona Group rocks.The Whim Creek Group is overlain, locally unconformably (two to three km east of Mount Negri), by the Negri Volcanics which include here the Louden Volcanics (unit Abu of Hickman, 1977), (Horwitz, 1979). The negri volcanics are an alternating sequence of variolitic and quench textured lavas not dissimilar to the highest units of the Sholl Belt (Figure 1). They range from high-Mg basalt to tholeitic andesites (Glikson et al, 1986, pp 79 and 84). The whole succession of the Sholl Belt is estimated to be of the order of four km in thickness, more consistent with the two km thick (Horwitz, 1979, Figure 1) Whim Creek area sequence than with the much thicker Warrawoona Group sequences. The Whim Creek Group (including the Negri Volcanics) is considered to be a widespread grouping (Fitton, Horwitz and Sylvester, 1976; Horwitz, 1979; Horwitz and Guj, 1986) which is prevalent in the northern part of the Pilbara Craton. It is considered by these authors to include the Mallina Formation turbidites of the trough area of Ryan (1965). One component, the Mons Cupri Volcanic, is about 2.95 Ga (Richards and Blockley, 1984). Between the Sholl Fault and Egina, the Whim Creek Group is intruded by large ultrarnafic to granophyric ills of the Millindinna Complex (Fitton, Horwitz and Sylvester, 1975), dated at 2.860 ± 002 Ga by Gulson and Korsh (1983) near the Sherlock River (south side of Caines Well Granite area). The Millindinna Complex has been equated to the same magmatic episode as the layered complexes of the Sholl Belt by Fitton, Horwitz and Sylvester (1975, p 20).

The decoppering of soft and hard leads was investigated by stirring in an open pot, using sulfur or sulfur plus pyrites, or sulfur plus pyrrhotite, as reagents. Lead samples taken during the process were analysed for copper. Dross samples were examined by optical micro- scope, SEM and XRD. Soft lead containing silver can be decoppered satisfactorily by stirring with 0.1% S at low temperatures - close to 330¦C. Soft lead, whether containing silver or not, can be decoppered satisfactorily at higher temperatures by stirring with 0.1% S plus 0.4% pyrites. Then CuFeS2, Cu5FeS4 and PbS are formed, instead of Cu2S, CuS and PbS when using S alone. Hard lead containing tin can be decoppered satisfactorily by stirring with 0.1% S at temperatures from 320-400¦C. When stirring with 0.1% S plus 0.4% pyrites, reversion of copper from dross to lead on prolonged stirring does not occur. Hard lead without tin can be decoppered with S plus pyrites better than with S alone, but the presence of antimony hinders the decoppering, which is less effective on lead with 5.5% Sb than with 2.3% Sb.

Solid Energy New Zealand Limited owns and operates the Ohai coal field (Wairaki Coal Mining Licence, CML) in western Southland. The Morley Stream passes directly through the middle of the CML and has required diversion in the past to enable open cast mining to proceed. Solid Energy is evaluating two new open cast pits at Ohai. Commissioning these new pits would necessitate further diversion of the Morley Stream. One of these potential new mines is adjacent to an abandoned State Coal Mines (State Coal) pit and there is an opportunity to substantially rehabilitate this old pit as a corollary to the new mine and the stream diversion project.   Past Morley Stream diversions were undertaken by State Coal and so they predated the Resource Management Act 1991 and the degree of community environmental awareness and involvement that has become the norm these days. Not surprisingly the design and construction of the historic stream diversions was based purely upon mining (operational) and engineering considerations. This led to the stream being diverted in a manner that achieved the clinical conveyance of design volumes of water from points A and B.   Solid Energy realised that the proposed new diversions need to adopt more holistic and environmentally sustainable design principles while also including appropriate mining and engineering constraints. This project involved the design of a 1.7 km diversion of the Morley Stream (median flow of about 1000 litres/second) that would enable progressive prestripping and development of the new mines and would also address final rehabilitation (of the stream), geotechnical risks, hydrological and ecological issues. To address all of these factors the project required a multidisciplinary approach. Moreover, it required a clear understanding of how the mining operational constraints could be integrated with the environmental considerations. A significant aspect of the project was how to take account of fishery instream habitat needs, the resource consent requirements and most of all, the involvement of key stakeholders such as the Fish & Game Council, Department of Conservation, the Iwi and local community in the design process. This was achieved through coordinated consultation and stakeholder involvement in a technical design workshop.

Copper entering a lead ,smelter in concentrate or from other sources is recoVered as matte and speiss which contain appreciable quantities of lead. The matte and speiss are usually sold to copper smelters to recover the copper content and also any gold and silver in these products, but the value of the lead is largely lost. Some copper plants pay for portion of the lead content, but regarded as a means of recovering lead it is more costly and less efficient than if the lead were recovered at the lead smelter.Because of the value of this lead loss, the metallurgy of copper recovery has assumed greater importance in recent years owing to the rise on the price of lead.Two processes are in use today to produce matte and speiss, namely the iron matte process and the soda matte process developed by the American Smelting and Refining Co. 1 in D.S.A. The latter process is characterised by a higher copper to lead ratio than the older iron matting process.The following analyses are typical of matte and speiss produced at Broken Hill Associated Smelters, by both processes, although the soda matte process is still in a developmental stage and experience indicates that matte and speiss of lower lead tenor can be produced under favourable conditions.

Bacteria can play a key role in the processing of 'difficult' ores. Bioleaching opens the way to potentially extract copper from vast amounts of otherwise hard to process refractory low-grade chalcopyrite. In my talk I will outline our research philosophy to develop bioleaching as a Precision Processing unit process step. In our view, Precision Processing is a sophisticated approach to mineral processing where the ultimate goal is to measure and characterise the ore body in-ground and in real time during mining, allowing the down-stream unit processes (bioleaching, in this case) to be continuously tailored and tuned via feedback and feed-forward controls to obtain the highest possible recoveries at the lowest possible cost and environmental impact. I will describe some of the work that we are undertaking to better understand the interfacial phenomena underlying the fundamental bioleaching process with the aim of coming to a Precision Processing approach. We use techniques such as interfacial electrochemistry (scanning electrochemical microscopy, SECM), AFM, zeta potential measurement, and synchrotron science to elucidate the parameters that drive bacterial selectivity and adhesion, bacterial metabolism, and dissolution and precipitation processes for model systems and real chalcopyrite ores. As examples of our research, I will discuss in some detail our method to produce and characterise micro-patterned CuxS - silica thin films as model substrates for electrochemical and bacterial adhesion work and our approach to the interfacial chemical characterisation of extracellular polymeric substances of bio-active bacterial cells. I will also cover some of our recent findings relating to measurement and interpretation of bacterial adhesion on sulfidic substrates and its implications for bacterial adhesion and substrate selectivity. After having identified and discussed crucial leaching parameters, such as pH, Eh, T, [Cu2+], and [O2], the talk will go on addressing some of the early achievements and challenges encountered in our work to design and prepare low-cost, rugged sensing devices that allow the in-situ (in this case, in-dump or in-heap) localised measurement of these parameters. I will conclude my talk by painting the picture of how the work of our group might contribute to realising the dream of transforming bioleaching into genuine high-tech Precision Processing of minerals. "*This is an abstract only*Construction of geological models for kimberlites has historically largely been based on visual volcanic textures and features, with chemical data only collected on an ad-hoc basis depending on the level of perceived complexity observed in the geological data. The focus of this paper is a high-level view of the impact an initial absence (or lack) of relevant chemical data had on two kimberlite resource models as well as how the magnitude of the problem increased once the resource estimation process commenced (Stiefenhofer, 2013). The impact of ignoring chemical data on a project assessment where micro-diamond estimation techniques are employed, is also discussed. Resource estimates based on micro-diamond data are critically dependent on the use of the correct geological model since stationarity of the size frequency distribution is key to the generation of correct grade estimates. A multilevel approach is advocated where the volcanological/visual model is verified using chemical data and both are in turn verified by the diamond data.CITATION:Stiefenhofer, J, 2013. The occurrence of coarse gold particles leading to grade complexity and sampling challenges is a common feature of many gold deposits. Poorly designed sampling protocols applied to these deposit types can lead to an excessively high fundamental sampling error. Together with other errors, the fundamental sampling error contributes to the nugget effect. Proper sample collection, preparation and assay protocols are required to minimise this error, and hence reduce the total nugget effect. Reduction of the nugget effect is a key requirement for subsequent geostatistical resource estimates to be effective. A case study from the Nalunaq gold mine in Greenland is presented, which is characterised by notable quantities of coarse gold (>30 per cent +100 ¦m gold) hosted in quartz veins. Diamond drilling provides a good measure of gross geological continuity at practical grid spacings, but is not considered to represent the mineralisation effectively. On-reef development with face and bulk sampling, together with detailed geological studies were undertaken during the resource delineation phase. This contribution describes the nature of the Nalunaq deposit, its gold particle size characteristics, how sampling and assay protocols were developed (including QA/QC issues), application of GyÆs sampling theory and its calibration, and how the data was subsequently applied to grade estimation.

In this paper, the kinetics of iron precipitation as sodium jarosite from aqueous solution is investigated. The determination of the reaction mechanism is attempted based on the experimental data of iron removal as a function of time, without using the characteristics of the precipitate.Experiments at the temperature range from 50° to 95°C were carried out with initial conditions of iron concentration IQ g/L, sodium sulphate concentration 25.44 g/L, sulphuric acid concentration 3.68 g/L, pH = 1.5 and agitation rate 600 rpm. Temperature greatly and positively influences iron precipitation from the solution and this is accompanied by pH decrease. The activation energy was determined using the maximum values of the precipitation rate, which were evaluated by polynomial fitting of the sigmoidal shape experimental curves, and it was found to be 44.37 kcallmole. The determination of the rate-controll ing mechanism was based on some criteria used for the discrimination among the three probable mechanisms of precipitation (diffusion, mononuclear nucleation, polynuclear nucleation). These criteria utilise various funetions of the recovery 'a' of iron precipitated versus time, the most important of which are the chronomals. The results of the kinetic analysis procedure showed that the polynuclear nucleation growth mechanism controls the precipitation of iron as sodium jarosite. This was confirmed by the high value of activation energy, excluding diffusion as the controlling mechanism.

During the life of a mining project in Papua New Guinea (PNG), the greatest impact is on the people of the project area and the most intense, day-to-day contact is between these people and the project's field staff. Yet formal structures at present emphasise contact between much higher levels of national government and company personnel. Whilst understandable, this is unfortunate particularly since, given the nature of PNG politics, villagers do have a powerful influence on project success, as recent dramatic events on Bougainville have indicated. A greater role for local views and greater attention to such views by other parties is clearly required. But to achieve a successful marriage between informal village politics and the formal structures of investment procedures will require considerable patience and adjustment. This should be reflected in the cost of project development and be regarded as being as of a significance equal to that currently accorded to the technical aspects of project development.

This case study assesses the application of Mine-to-Mill optimisation combined with Whittle Consulting’s Prober<sup>®</sup> economic optimisation for the purpose of economic value uplift in open cut base and precious metal operations. The study extends the application of these optimisation methods to incorporate the recent practice of Ultra High Intensity Blasting (UHIB) developed by Orica Mining Services. The case study deposit known as “Marvin” is a copper/gold porphyry resource that is commonly used in optimisation software training and industry case studies. It has many similarities to Newcrest’s Cadia Hill open pit mine in NSW. Prior desktop research and industrial trials employed static assessments of Mine-to-Mill effects. No prior work other than a Whittle Consulting client study, has sought to assess the impact of variable fragmentation on enterprise economic value. The Horn Island gold and mineral field produced 194 kilograms of gold in the 4 years subsequent to its discovery in 1894, from an area of shallow workings 1.5 kilometres x 0.5 kilometres. Gold deposits in the adjacent Prince of Wales, Hammond and Possession Islands also drew attention at that time.These islands form part of a Carboniferous sequence of ignimbrites (Torres Strait Volcanics) intruded by the Badu Granite and minor volcanics within the Cape York-Oriomo Ridge. Gold is associated with the epithermal stages of igneous activity. Recent exploration has defined sub-horizontal zones of disseminated gold mineralisation in the sub-surface, as well as reserves in the outcropping sub-vertical structures mined in the past. Released estimates of 170,00 tonnes proven ore and 550,000 probable ore at 4 grams per tonne gold, have been established.Gold is mostly contained in quartz vein stockworks and hydrothermal breccias within the intensely propylitised medium grained granites which form the local host rocks within the coarse grained Badu Granite. Associated vein minerals are sulphides (primarily of lead, zinc and iron) and calcite. Various intrusions of porphyry, aplite and granodiorite occur through the prospect area.
