The tankhouse of the electrolytic zinc plant at Nordenham is operating with a very high operating efficiency of 99 per cent. This has been achieved not only by strict control of the quality of the zinc sulphate cell feed solution but also by all the improvements in housekeeping in the tankhouse developed during the past years: aluminium cathode specification, cathode stripping cycle, edge strips, copper contacts, anode isolators, cell cleaning, fittings and washing devices. During 1987 to 1992 the casting department was completely remodelled in order to improve the quality of the zinc products, the safety of the operations and the flexibility. The remodelling includes the enlargement of the area for the casting shop, the storage buildings and the five casting lines on the same ground level. New lines for alloying products and for SHG25 kg zinc ingots have been constructed. The line for galvanising products has new equipment in some parts and the other lines have been modified.

In stratigraphic orebodies, estimation of footwall and hangingwall location is often of more importance than grade estimation. Contoured grade estimates often produce smeared boundaries and the use of accumulations and thicknesses as variables re-introduces the original problem: location of the point at which the estimate is to be made. The paper introduces statistical and geostatistical techniques for the solution of the problem and illustrates the techniques with a case study from Mount Isa, one of the world's largest producing silver-lead-zinc deposits. Solutions for calculating variograms in orebodies of variable dip, strike and plunge are presented together with relative variograms for individual metals, metal accumulation and orebody thickness. Optimal methods for hangingwall and footwall location are introduced and illustrated with an example. Orebody boundaries are then kriged after which individual metal grades are kriged within the estimated boundaries. The boundary estimates are compared with manually interpreted boundaries and known boundaries in mined-out areas. Grade and tonnage estimates are compared in mined-out areas.

As remaining gold deposits tend to become more refractory, some form of oxidative pre-treatment involving hydro or pyrometallurgy is necessary to maintain high metal recoveries. These pre-treatments include pressure oxidation, bio-leaching or roasting. In the past, the primary criterion for selection of oxidative pre-treatment relied mainly on the extent of gold recovery and relative economics. In this study, a different approach has been adopted, ie the quantitative determination of environmental performance of the oxidative pre-treatment processes bio-leaching, roasting and pressure oxidation to assess which had the least impact on the environment. By establishing the environmental performance of processes, waste minimisation can be addressed early in process selection. Using mass balances, the environmental theme method was applied to determine the performance, on the basis of gold treated, of the oxidative pre-treatment processes of selected plants. No clear trend was observed in the overall impacts of each of seven plants, with all but one of the environmental evaluation indices being of the same order of magnitude; this was probably due to masking effects arising from the large variations in feed composition, tonnage, and gold levels. Within each type of pre-oxidation plant however, certain trends were detectable. For instance, irrespective of plant size, ore composition or mineralogy, for the bio-leaching and pressure oxidation units, the general order of environmental impact from greatest to least was sequentially toxicity, acidification potential, depletion of resources, solid waste generation and greenhouse enhancement. For the roasters the acidification potential was the most significant. Determination of the environmental performance of the oxidative pre-treatment of a hypothetical ore in a plant of fixed tonnage was undertaken to remove the possible masking effects of variables associated with feeds of different mineralogy, gold tenor and tonnage. The bio-leaching process gave a marginally better performance than pressure oxidation, the roasting process the worst, although there was not a great difference between them. The decreasing order of contribution to the environmental index was acidification potential, toxicity, resource depletion, solid waste generation and greenhouse enhancement for bio-leaching and pressure oxidation; whereas it was acidification potential, solid waste generation, toxicity, resource depletion and greenhouse enhancement for roasting. Since the major contributor to the environmental index was the acidification potential, the environmental performance of treatment processes for the acidic effluents was calculated. After neutralisation of the net acid resulting from bio-oxidation and pressure oxidation, and the application of various scrubbing and product formation processes for the sulphur dioxide from the roasting process, it was shown that pressure oxidation gave a marginally better performance than bio-leaching, ahead of roasting. This study demonstrated the potential for the development of a predictive tool which could be used in determining the environmental performance, and thus the selection, optimisation, and improvement of pre-oxidation processes for least impact on the environment. These would allow operation of these processes within defined environmental performance limits and decisions regarding the desirability of processing various parts of a heterogeneous orebody to be made on environmental grounds.

GeoScience Victoria has completed quantitative assessments of undiscovered gold endowment in the northern parts of the Bendigo and Stawell Zones. The under cover area in the Bendigo Zone (10 000 km2) is likely to contain approximately 1000 t and at least 290 t of gold in undiscovered mesozonal orogenic gold deposits. For the under cover area in the Stawell Zone (30 000 km2), the estimates are approximately 1200 t and at least 200 t of undiscovered mesozonal orogenic gold. The Ertsberg (Gunung Bijih) Mining District is located in the core of the highlands of west New Guinea, an island long recognised as the product of a Cenozoic arccontinent collision. Geologic studies in the Central Ranges of the Papua Province of Indonesia (near Puncak Jaya, 4884 m) have revealed timing relationships, when combined with mechanical considerations, led to a refined model for the tectonomagmatic effects of collisional orogenesis and the formation of the spectacular Grasberg porphyry-type copper-gold (Cu-Au) deposit.   An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The resurgence of mining over the last 30 years has coincided with a growing awareness in the community of the importance of environmental protection and conservation. This involves a growing concern about environmental degradation, an increasing desire for the setting-aside of natural areas for wilderness preservation, accelerating pressures for the return of large areas of Crown land to Aboriginal ownership and a widening view that economic growth itself may be undesirable (Burton, 1987). This has lead to much public debate over the implementation of sound environmental policies to achieve a balance between economic necessities and ecological goals.

Consideration of the questions: (i) is it feasible to study groups of processes in a generalised way? (ii) to what extent does purpose affect the form of a process model? (iii) are there any significant, novel investig- ations which can be made by computer simulation? (iv) what long-term developments are desirable in extractive metallurgy? has led to some new broad objectives for research in hydrometallurgical process engineering. Propositions for grouping processes, developing models for different specific purposes, using a systems engineering approach and developing high technology processes are discussed, and the role of computer simulation indicated by reference to particular projects.

Willemite (Zn2SiO4) is one of the main zinc carriers in several Neoproterozoic carbonate-hosted non-sulfide deposits ofNamibia and Zambia. Willemite commonly replaces sphalerite, but it may also replace the carbonate host rocks. Fluid inclusions, cathodoluminescence petrography and trace element geochemistry are crucial to distinguish between hypogene, high temperature and low temperature (possibly) supergene willemites. A global period of willemite mineralisation, extending from Cambrian to Lower Ordovician has been proposed for the southern hemisphere. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Carbonation of reinforced concrete is a potential durability issue for vehicular tunnels. This is particularly the case where elevated carbon dioxide concentrations exist and when the design life is 100 years or more. The process of carbonation can result in loss of passive protection to embedded steel reinforcement and initiation of corrosion. Therefore, tunnel design needs to consider the potential for carbonation on internal surfaces and how design life can be achieved in severe environments. This paper examines methods for predicting carbonation and how deterioration can be mitigated through appropriate concrete mix design and construction practices.

The Transportable Moisture Limits, as ,measured by the procedures laid down in The IMCO Code of Safe Practices for Bulk Cargoes, determine the target moisture contents for the concentrates produced at the West Coast Mines of Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited at Rosebery. Filtration of these concentrates gives moisture contents considered to be low in comparison with those achieved for similar sulphide concentrates, but which are very close to these Transportable Moisture Limits. The filtering techniques used are outlined and the problems associated with-maintaining concentrate moistures below the required limits, together with the methods used to solve these problems are discussed.

A metallurgical evaluation of the Argyle Kimberlite No. 1 (AKl) orebody has been carried out using a 40 tonnes per hour pilot plant. Pilot plant results, together with laboratory investigations provided a basis for the determination of process design criteria for a major treatment plant. Various sampling programmes were carried out to determine specific aspects in the evaluation of diamond liberation. Treatment parameters such as the top crush size, recrush size and the bottom cut-off size were investigated. In the early stages of the planning of a new exploitation, the error in ore reserve estimation is an important factor that must not be disregarded. As this error can be computed by geostatistical methods, the risk of the venture can be calculated for different recognition patterns in a certain assumption of economical conditions. A case story is described for an open pit phosphate deposit in which grade/tonnage curves and their confidence intervals are related to an economic function for three drilling patterns and decisions are taken on the basis of cost and value of supplementary information.

The mathematical modelling of rock fragmentation by blasting is one of the most difficult and challenging problems of applied mathematics. Not only is complex mathematics required but there is incomplete understanding of the basic physics and chemistry involved. The possibility of getting the physical basis of a model correct by simple mathematical and experimental procedures is demonstrated for the novel process of fragmenting rock by high-pressure arc discharges. While the importance of obtaining the correct physical basis for a model is emphasised, high-pressure arc induced fragmentation of rock is shown to be a powerful laboratory tool for the study of blasting.

The paper describes a system for providing mine management with a continuous indication of the effectivness of longwall coalface powered supports in controlling roof-to-floor convergence. The system comprises on-face instrumentation monitoring convergence and support leg circuit pressures, a means of transmitting the output of that instrumentation to the surface for collection, and software which presents both a condensed analysis for rapid review of the current state, and extended analyses from which remedial action can be recommended if a problem is identified. The results of a field trial are presented showing that meaningful results can be obtained.

Two innovative ground reinforcement products have been developed for use in the mining industry. One of these products is a high strength polyethylene (HOPE) bar for use as a rib bolt in underground coal mining and as a corrosion proof tendon in open pit mines. The other product is a cable bolt (Ultrastrand) which demonstrates enhanced load transfer and is available in continuous lengths. Ultrastrand's exceptional in- situ performance and versatility makes it ideal for mechanised installation in both underground and surface mining operations. Details of these products are presented and results from labortaory and field trials are discussed.

This paper describes the use of a wavefront reinforcement model which has been developed to supplement established charge mass scaling methods. The model allows for the time taken for blast vibration wavefronts to travel from each blasthole, and has been successfully used to explain the reason for directional increases in both air and ground vibration in certain situations. The model has been used to identify wavefront reinforcement due to the propagation of air vibration and ground vibrations in certain situations. The paper includes a throw (or cast) blasting case history which provides multi-station evidence of the strong directional nature of wavefront reinforcement.

The tunnel alignments investigated for the Gosford Regional Sewerage Scheme are located in the Terrigal Formation and are covered for most of their length by a thick blanket of soil and weathered rock. The following techniques were found to be most effective in geotechnical investigations for tunnelling in this area: air-photo interpretation, seismic surveys to pinpoint drilling targets, in-situ measurements of strength,deformation modulus and permeability in cored holes, and the construction of rock- mass models. Cross-hole seismic modulus measurements, surface resistivity soundings and electric well-logging techniques were found to have limited applicability due to adverse local conditions.

Increasing fuel prices, unavailabilty and high prices of tyres have imposed tremendous challenges for large open pit operations. Carajßs open pit mines, one of the largest iron ore projects in the world, has been particularly affected due to the high amount of giant trucks operating in this site. On the other hand, environmental constraints push the mining industry towards reductions in fossil fuels, noise and waste generation. As a feasible response to these requirements, an alternative mining method for open pit mining, aiming to reduce or even eliminate the need for trucks has been developed, based primarily on coal opencast continuous operations. This innovative approach for open pits involves the replacement of trucks by fully-mobile crushers, bench conveyors and ramp conveyors. Two different applications have been developed for exploiting waste and ore at Carajßs largest pit, named N4E. To make it possible, mine planning paradigms should be replaced leading to new conceptual design of open pits. This paper shows two case studies (waste and ore conceptual design) carried out at Carajßs mines to anticipate and put forward the future of open pit mining, proving that our industry would be greatly affected by this new way of exploitation, reducing thousands of tons of fossil fuels. Productivities can be enhanced and environmental performance greatly improved. In this approach mine automation can be easily implemented reducing operating costs and man's fatigue.

The New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) is a proven concept for the safe and economic construction of underground facilities. This is especially true for tunnelling activity where changing ground conditions are often encountered. However, the principles central to the NATM have gained only limited use within Australia, presumably due to the measurement process inter- fering with tunnel driving and the cost associated with instrumentation and interpre- tation expertise. The design and operating principles of two basic instruments are explained together with laboratory simulated test results and suggest- ions for use in an integrated NATM style approach to underground excavation and construc- tion. The two instruments monitor load in rock reinforcement and deformation in rock or primary and secondary linings. The instruments may be fitted with a miniature display module which outputs the measured parameter in engineering units directly. The design of the sensing components allows the instruments to be installed in various configurations suitable for routine performance monitoring, quality control, support element testing or detailed investigations. The display module which reduces the need for instrumenta- tion expertise should suit contractors and allow performance data to be obtained which quickly may be used to modify support procedures to suit ground conditions. When complemented by convergence measurements the devices enable most facets of the NATM to be implemented.
