The Chang Jiang Tunnel and Bridge Project, when completed, will provide a fixed link between ShanghaiÆs rapidly developing Pudong District and Chong Ming Island, situated in the Yangtze River delta. The link includes 7.5 km of bored tunnel from the Pudong to the intermediate Changxing Island from where the link comprises viaduct and a cable stayed bridge. The bored section comprises twin 13.7 m internal diameter segmentally lined three-lane highway tunnels. At its deepest point the tunnel will be 55 m below the river. Cross passages will link the two bores for passenger evacuation. Tunnel boring commenced in October 2006 and is scheduled for completion in mid-2009. The paper describes the key features of the design and construction of the bored tunnel by two 14.53 m diameter slurry TBMs and eight cross passages using ground freezing techniques in alluvial sediments. A decision to include light rail below the road deck was taken after the completion of the detailed design. This posed a number of design challenges including passenger evacuation to the road deck, and the redesign of the low point sumps. The various options considered are discussed together with those adopted for construction.

Design and selection of support systems for longwall faces call for in-depth know- ledge of strata mechanics and in particular of strata-support interactions. The paper presents the results of field investigations and analysis of a difficult-to-cave roof using powered supports under a massive dolerite sill in Central India using a state- of-the-art datalogger system. The mechanised long wall face was equipped with 4/680 tons chockshields operated on the IFS mode using a 300 KW DERD shearer. The datalogger system was capable of storing data simulta- neously in 32 channels. The paper describes the monitoring system and the monitoring programme. The system provided useful information on support behaviour, build- up of leg pressures and face convergence during an intense dynamic periodic weighting phenomenon which destroyed the integrity of almost half of the face supports. At this point, the face had advanced by about 197 metres from the barrier. The paper outlines a post-mortem analysis of this dynamic event and provides a critical evaluation of the data collected for understanding strata support interaction and the behaviour of the massive sill in the overburden.

The sampling of non-ferrous concentrates from trucks and trains has long been carried out either manually or by automatic spears. Very little use has been made of conventional sampling systems for sampling concentrates at transfer points, or cross-belt samplers for sampling from the belt as the concentrate moves along the conveyor.Due to the high value of base metal concentrates and the often extremely heterogeneous nature of the material it is imperative that the sampling procedures adopted are accurate and precise. The basic principle that all particles in the stream have an equal opportunity to be included in the final sample is not fulfilled by accepted traditional concentrate sampling procedures such as the spearing of wagons, trucks or streams. This may lead to significant bias being introduced into the final sample.Consequently, the application of correct sampling procedures, either with conventional cross-stream samplers or the newer cross-belt samplers, is of prime importance.SGS Australia has recently installed a number of cross-belt samplers for the sampling of base metal concentrates both in Australia and overseas. The application of these samplers will be discussed with emphasis on the benefits of their use.

The 250 metric tonnes of gold and 360 000 metric tonnes of copper recovered from the Mt Morgan Mine in Central Queensland justify its fame. The mine ceased operation before the advent of three-dimensional computer graphical modelling of orebodies became common practice in mine planning. The Mount Morgan Mine records however remain and are the database for this study. The Mount Morgan project takes ore deposit modelling one step further by examining the relationship between grade distribution within the orebody and key geological features, as a tool for exploration and development.The Mount Morgan gold and copper mineralisation is shown to be strongly lognormally distributed. The deposit has been split into three areas, using geological boundaries, each with different geostatistical characteristics. Important features include: the spatial relationship of near-vertical, high grade shoots with a ring dyke thought to be related to the North Dyke; separation of the high grade eastern stopes from the others along the Andesite Dyke; and lack of concentrated mineralisation along the Slide Fault.Recognition of these features is useful to those currently exploring the Mount Morgan district for similar style deposits, by stressing the importance, or lack thereof, of the geological features.

Three key areas of C.I.P. plant design, viz. leach- ing time, adsorption and the gold loading on the carbon, are discussed and illustrated with examples. The need for accurate pilot plant data for use in assessing and optimising design is emphasized. This approach should minimize capital and maximise return on capital. It is demonstrated that, as regards adsorption, economics favours short retention time, high gold loadings and mechanically agitated, draft tube reactors. INTRODUCTION Little attempt appears to have been made in Australia to design the present generation of C.I.P. plants to achieve an economic optimum. Most would, seem to have been based on pre- liminary leaching data, gold extraction and value and rule of thumb which, in general, has led to over design and over capitalisation. An essential step to effective economic design is a comprehensive pilot plant study to establish definitive operating parameters, yields and reagent costs. In most cases the cost of developing this data will be more than offset against capital savings in plant; the operating profit should be increased substantially, and profit is maximised for known

In the world-class mining district of Morococha, epithermal polymetallic replacement bodies and veins overprint porphyry mineralisation and skarns related to subvolcanic intrusions of Miocene age, thus indicating ore formation in two different environments, separated in time or forming a continuum. The district covers an area of about 70 km2 in the north-western part of the Domo de Yauli complex in theWestern Cordillera of central Peru and is part of the Miocene polymetallic belt, also hosting the deposits of Colquijirca (Bendez· et al, 2008b) and Cerro de Pasco (Baumgartner, FontbotT and Vennemann, 2008). Multiple late-Miocene porphyry stocks intruded Permian, Triassic-Jurassic and late-Cretaceous sedimentary carbonate and volcano-sedimentary formations, as well as large mid-Miocene barren intrusions. Extensive field work and detailedmapping of different styles of orebodies suggest that ore formation in the area was related to the late-Miocene magmatism. Good outcrop conditions and superimposing of different mineralisation styles make Morococha an ideal location for studying ore-forming processes in a complex porphyry-related magmatic-hydrothermal system in which porphyry-to-epithermal transition occurred. This paper is based on an evaluation project engaged upon jointly by Mount Isa Mines Limited nnd" IBM Austra]ia Limited. Mount Isa Mines Limited produces most of its copper from large underground open stopes within massive orebodies. Variations in the position and shapes of these stopes can result in improved metal recovery. An interactive graphics system has been developed to assist the mine design engineer optimise his design. The system can assist the engineer throughout the orebody visualis- ation, initial design and optimisation phases of his design. At any stage the engineer may call upon the display of gridded mesh data, digitized ore outlines or existing stopes or development (drives, cross-cuts). This information may be viewed in plan or any vertical section or in three dimensions with rotation. Tonnage and grade calculations may be quickly performed for initial stope outlines or for modifications to them during the optimisation phase. The system design is highly modular. An array of functions for the manipulation of coordinate and line information may be linked with the development or stope design functions in whichever way the designer desires.

The Eossing Uranium Mine is a high tonnage low grade open pit operation using acid leaching for uranium extraction and ion exchange and solvent extraction for solution purification. Advanced technology, much of it computer based, has led to major economies that have contained operating unit costs over the last four years in the face of double figure inflation. An improved ore reserve block model and mine planning system have achieved a considerable reduction in the stripping ratio. Drilling and blasting costs have decreased some 25%, mainly by the introduction of heavy ANFO explosive. A centralised computer control centre for the metallurgical plant has increased labour productivity resulting in improved process control. The all-staff workforce is united with management in the objectives of creating a safe, healthy, working and living environment and a prosperous company, capable of contributing to the wellbeing of the nation and the shareholders. This situation has been brought into being by an equal opportunity policy coupled with a management system emphasising open two-way communication through all levels in the organisation. The success of this policy is highly apparent in the morale and productivity of the workforce.

Can mining promote sustainable development? What is sustainable development? Is sustainable development good for corporate sustainability? Does it work in practice? If so, is it good for business? This paper does not seek to provide definitive answers to these issues. Rather, it is presented in the interests of sharing information and contributing to the pool of collective experience. The discussion will draw on the experience of Placer Dome in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Sustainable development means development that is maintained at a steady level without exhausting natural resources or causing ecological disturbance. The term æsustainable developmentÆ is often linked to the concept of ecological equilibrium, development that is self-replenishing. While its essential meaning remains the same, in practice, and for todayÆs complex and industrial world, different people will interpret sustainable development in different ways. Given the dynamics of development and the competing social, political and economic interests, sustainable development must be seen from a much broader perspective. This is the point that this paper will attempt to make. Mining, an activity that uses non-renewable resources, can promote sustainable development. The 1987 Brundtland Report (also known as the Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development), defines sustainable development in a broader manner - as development that meets the needs of the present world without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (Elkington, 1997). This definition calls for inter-generational equity in the development and use of resources by many organisations, including multinational corporations. Corporate sustainability, on the other hand, is about developing strategies that guide a corporation to stay alive and, more importantly, to stay ahead of its competitors. It is basically about survival in a competitive social and commercial environment. In a corporate world, profitability is survival. In this context, corporate profitability, the main ingredient of corporate sustainability, is important for sustainable development. Without profits, corporations will find it difficult to practice sustainable development or indeed any development. Sustainable development can integrate mining activities with the rest of the community, add value and, in the long-term, profits to the bottom-line. Ultimately, sustainability will force corporations to adopt strategies based on a longer time scale to survive. In the mining sector, corporate sustainability depends on a close relationship with all stakeholders, particularly landowners for whom sustainable development is critically important. Increasingly, there is an acceptance of the view that success is not achieved simply through competition in price, cost and technology but, more importantly, through creating social infrastructure which support community ethics, norms and values essential for trust and partnership. Needless to say, mining companies that engage in appropriate community-based development in support of inter-generational justice recognise the true value of sustainability. This is sometimes called the æhuman sustainability approachÆ which underlines the critical significance of trust in relationships with stakeholders and continuous improvement of corporate capabilities directed towards the future (Dunphy and Griffiths, 1998). In the long-term, such development will enhance corporate public image and acceptability. In practice, both concepts can be built on the principles of economic viability, environmental quality and social justice -what, in todayÆs parlance, is increasingly becoming known as the ætriple-bottom-lineÆ approach to business (Elkington, 1997). Underpinning this approach is a process of continuing dialogue and co-operation between governments, non-government organisations (NGOs) and business.

There is growing acknowledgement that successful organisations, including mining companies, achieve their competitive advantage by better managing their employees, customers and other stakeholders. The fact that I have been asked to address this conference is perhaps evidence of the recognition of the importance of ensuring the improved management capabilities of the personnel within Australian mining companies. As many of you will be aware, prior to my appointment to the role of President of Minera Alumbrera Limited (MAA), the operator of the Bajo de la Alumbrera project, my career had been more generally focussed on industrial relations and human resources management. My appointment was met by surprise in some quarters, as it is unusual for a person without the technical background of a mining discipline to manage a world-class mining operation. However, it was recognised early in the life of the Alumbrera project that the operation did not lack technical expertise or a committed workforce; rather what was required was innovative management of the project and its operational resources, particularly given that we were operating with totally ægreenÆ workforce in a country without a large-scale mining culture. It is my experience that a particular shortcoming of mining companies is that they have tended to ægrowÆ managers based on their technical expertise rather than people management skills. Historically, many companies have assumed, or at least hoped, that their better technical people would develop the requisite skills to take on the challenges of management. Such philosophy has not always met with success. Whilst the topic for my presentation was originally published as People in the Mining Industry, within the context of the overall theme for this plenary session, People: Education for the Future, it is a subject with an extraordinary breadth of possibilities for discussion. Therefore, I have chosen to redefine my presentation to People Management Issues in Offshore Mining Projects,an issue which I consider to be an important area within the overall topic and one which has particular currency given the increased tendency by Australian miners towards offshore exploration. It is also relevant from the perspective of continued rationalisation of our industry, the recognition that there will be more large-scale, global corporate mining entities and that significantly more mining professionals will become æcitizens of the worldÆ. We therefore need to prepare our future leaders for these challenges. The topic also allows me to highlight the importance of an holistic management approach as the establishment of a new project in a foreign environment puts into stark relief the need for the application of the full range of competencies, rather than the narrow ætechnicalÆ approach to doing business. I hasten to add, however, that the mining industry is not alone in this regard and I was interested to read an article in the Weekend Australian of 22/23 January 2000, which reported on the first key speech of former Westpac CEO, Bob Joss, as Dean of the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. He said: à We know that when our students go out into the world, if they have to struggle, it will not be because theyÆre not smart enough, or they donÆt have enough good ideas. It will be because they struggle over managing themselves and their relationships to other people. The article then went on to say that Bob Joss foreshadowed an initiative to build alliances between the Business School and other Humanities departments within Stanford University to draw on their learning. Other business schools have also recognised this need, albeit somewhat late in the day, as have the most enlightened of modern corporations; in summary, successful businesses have recognised that in an age where competitive advantage through, for example, technological breakthroughs is very short-lived, it is the quality of management that will provide the leading edge. By using the Alumbrera project as a case study, I will identify certain of the challenges with which companies and individuals may be confronted in the establishment of a greenfields project outside Australia. However, many of the issues raised will have direct application in the context of the development of an Australian operation. My objective is to provide an indication of areas which should be considered at the formative stages of a projectÆs development, with particular focus on the issues of people management. I would expect that such a study would be of benefit to companies, education institutions and individuals in preparing themselves for similar experiences.

Bulk Ore Sorting (BOS) has the potential to add significant value to mining operations by manipulating the feed grade and throughput to the processing plant. However, assessing the performance of BOS is complex, as it is influenced by geology, equipment, spatial and time domains. This increases the risk (real and perceived) of the technology. To manage risk, brownfield operations have the option to: (a) first test the variability in feed grade using a detector on the feed conveyor and subsequently construct the diverter and associated materials handling equipment when the value is established; or (b) conduct site trials with standalone sorting plants. The approaches described for brownfield projects are not available for greenfield projects where the in-situ heterogeneity needs to be quantified and translated into an economic evaluation to test the viability of BOS. Ausenco has developed a methodology that allows assessing the in-situ ore heterogeneity and uses an in-house technoeconomic model to determine the value of BOS for greenfield projects and assess the effects of sorting performance on project economics. The in-situ grade heterogeneity can be measured on a length of drill core and fitted to a mathematical model to assign a heterogeneity index. Given the spatial location, this heterogeneity index can be mapped across a deposit in combination with the average grade. Linking this information with relevant mixing models can determine the likely technical performance of BOS at an operation. However, the real value is only realised when this technical understanding is linked with an economic model and used to optimise the mine plan. Three case studies will be presented that show how Ausenco applies this methodology to assess the value of bulk ore sorting for greenfield studies.

The key goals for mine site rehabilitation require mine managers to demonstrate that rehabilitation is safe, stable, self-sustainable and non-polluting. Within this context, it is reasonable for stakeholders to expect that mine site rehabilitation is resilient to disturbance impacts such as fire and drought. However, mine managers actively avoid fire on rehabilitation; and as a result have limited understanding of fire behaviour on revegetated landforms, the long term implications for site stability and the potential risk to site relinquishment. An experimental fire that was conducted at the Curragh Mine site in May 2015, burnt 117 ha of 19- to 21-year old mine site rehabilitation, mimicking wildfire conditions and creating a mosaic of fire impacts across the landform. Using a combination of ground surveys and remote sensing assessments, we demonstrate that over a two year period, ecological metrics such as species richness, woody density and understorey biomass all recover to pre-fire levels for both grassland and open woodland areas. This is supported by WorldView-3 satellite imagery and the remote sensing assessment using the differenced Normalised Differenced Vegetation Index (dNDVI) which shows high regrowth within the burn area in 12- and 24-month image captures. The results suggest that within the recorded conditions, this site is resilient to fire impacts, and has the capacity to recover to pre-fire levels within the first two years following the fire.CITATION:McKenna, P, Erskine, P D, Phinn, S, Glenn, V and Doley, D, 2018. The Pebble deposit, located in south-west Alaska, is one of the largest Copper- Gold-Molybdenum (Cu-Au-Mo) porphyry systems in the world, with a current resource of >8 billion tonnes which contain 73.7 billion pounds of copper, 87.1 million ounces of gold and 4.16 billion pounds of molybdenum. The Pebble deposit formed at ~90 Ma, during emplacement of subduction-related hornblende granodiorite porphyry intrusions emplaced into Jurassic-Cretaceous sedimentary, volcanic and subvolcanic intrusive rocks of the Kahiltna Terrane. The Pebble West and Pebble East Zones represent two thermal and fluid centres in a single large magmatic-hydrothermal system. The West Zone extends from surface to about 500 m depth, has thin zones of oxide and supergene mineralisation overlying hypogene chalcopyrite mineralisation, and is amenable to open pit extraction. The East Zone extends to at least 1700 m depth, is higher grade, occurs beneath an eastward-thickening cover of younger sedimentary and volcanic rocks, lacks oxide and supergene mineralisation, and is being evaluated for underground block-cave mining. Most Cu-Au-Mo was introduced with early K-silicate alteration and related quartz-sulfide veins. In the East Zone, a structurally-controlled overprint by advanced argillic alteration significantly increased Au and, to a lesser extent, Cu grades. Exploration potential at Pebble and its surrounding district remains high. Several other porphyry, skarn and epithermal deposits have been discovered in the district, but only limited exploration has been conducted. The eastern, higher grade part of the Pebble deposit remains open in several directions, with significant potential for resource expansion by ongoing, aggressive drill exploration. It's my privilege to welcome you here this afternoon on behalf of the Sydney Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. This is a most important gathering. You, the delegates, represent what is probably the most influential cross-section of the mining investment community and the oil and gas investment community to meet as a group during the last decade. We are meeting today and tomorrow to review two related issues that will have far reaching implications for the effective use of capital by the natural resources sector in the 1990's. The views which will emerge over the two days will almost certainly 'influence the availability of new capital to the companies in the natural resources sector for the decade ahead. The two principal themes of Minval '89 are, first, the valuation of mining and oil and gas assets and securities, and second, disclosure and reporting requirements in the capital markets which relate specifically to natural resources companies. This conference is taking place at a time when further consolidation and rationalisation appears likely within the mining industry. Although the base metals and other sectors of the industry are enjoying profitability not seen since the early 1980's there is caution about committing to new capacity which could bring about a return to the low prices and excess supply which prevailed during much of the last ten years. These conditions have led to increased takeover activity within the mining industry overseas, and similar trends are as evident here in Australia as they are elsewhere. Recognition of value is therefore likely to become more important than ever before in preserving shareholder wealth, for creating new wealth and for preserving the financial health of the resources industry in the future. Valuation therefore is the first theme of the conference.

Titanium dioxide (TiG ) is produced 2 commercially by two methods generally referred to as the "sulfate" route and the "chloride" route. The SCM Corporation, in supplying 15% of the world's demand for TiO 2, uses both of these processes. Of the two processes the sulfate route is generally regarded as the older and more established technology. Worldwide the sulfate route accounts for some 70% of total Ti02 production. However, in the U.S.A. the chloride process accounts for 80% of production. The processes vary in chemistry and raw material requirements. In the "sulfate" process finely ground ilmenite or titanium slag is digested with sulfuric acid to produce a porous "cake" vrnich is extracted with water and recovered liquor. The solution is treated with scrap iron to reduce any ferric ions to the ferrous state which is then crystallised and removed as ferrous sulfate heptahydrate. The liquor is concentrated by evaporation and hydrolysed to form the insoluble hydroxide which is filtered and washed free of impurities. This is converted to the dioxide by calcination at 800 - 1000¦C and milled to break up any aggregates. The "chloride" process uses a higher quality feedstock of natural or synthetic rutile and/or high grade titania slag. The feedstock is mixed with ground high-purity coke and chlorinated at 950¦C in a fluidised bed. The resulting crude titanium tetrachloride is purified by distillation and chemical treatment. The purified titanium tetrachloride is burned with oxygen or oxygen enriched air to give titanium dioxide and chlorine, which is recovered and recycled to chlorination. Titanium dioxide pigment from both processing routes undergoes similar finishing techniques. It is subjected to further stages of wet and dry milling, then coated with layers of inorganic oxides in order to enhance its properties for specialist applications.

The potential of air rate profiling to significantly improve the flotation performance of a bank of cells has been shown by numerous studies. To date many profiles have been evaluated; balanced, increasing, decreasing and combinations of these. An increasing air rate profile, where the air rates are increased proportionally to each cell down the bank, has been typically found to yield improved flotation performance compared to other profiles. Air rate profiling has two distinct components; determining the correct total air rate for the bank, and determining the correct distribution of that air. This can be done simultaneously by finding the optimal air rate to each cell in the bank in turn through air recovery optimisation. Air recovery is the fraction of the inlet air which overflows the weir of a cell as unburst bubbles. The peak in air recovery (PAR) is a robust measurement of optimal performance for the operating conditions in the cell, and sets the PAR air rate. In this study, plant trials of different air rate profiles and profiling based on PAR, were evaluated. The total air rates to the bank for all profiles tested were approximately equal, allowing direct comparison. The highest cumulative mineral recovery was achieved by operating at the PAR air rates for each cell down the bank. Different distributions of the same total air rate to the bank gave the same cumulative upgrade ratio, but lower cumulative recoveries. In this work the upgrade ratio is defined as the ratio of the concentrate grade to the feed grade. The increase in cumulative mineral recovery, at the same upgrade ratio, in this study was greater than 33 per cent. Air recovery based optimisation of air rates to banks of cells significantly improves flotation performance as it simultaneously determines the optimal air rate to the bank, and the optimal distribution of that air.

THE slag from the blast furnaces having been granulated, a representative sample is taken to the sample mill. It is then dried, crushed through a 100-mesh screen, intimately mixed, and packeted for assay purposes.METHOD OF ANALYSISINSOLUBLEWeigh 1 grm. of the finely-pulverized slag into a 3t-in. casserole, moisten with a little water to prevent sticking, cover with a clock glass, and add 20 cc. of hot acid (1 HNOs, 3 HCI, 4 H2 0). Evaporate slowly to dryness on a hot plate and bake (without overheating) until all the gelatinous silica is dehydrated. Cool, add 20 cc. HCI (1-1), and boil gently for several minutes; filter into a 300-cc. beaker, cleaning out the casserole thoroughly with a rubber-tipped glass rod. Wash residue with hot distilled water and transfer it to a No. 1 porcelain crucible. Dry, ignite, cool in a desiccator and weigh as total insoluble matter. Dilute filtrate to 200 cc. and neutralize some of the excess HCI with NHa.OH. Warm, and pass H2S for 15 min. Filter and wash withhot water. Boil off H2 S, oxidize with 5 cc. HNOll , reduce bulk of the solution by evaporation. to about 100 cc., and transfer to a 250 cc. flask.SILICAFuse insoluble residue over a blast lamp in a platinum crucible with three or four times its weight of anhydrous carbonate of soda, for 10 to 15 minutes, or until decomposition is complete. Cool, and extract fusion in an 8-in. evaporating dish with HCI (1-1); rinse crucible and cover with distilled water, and evaporate to dryness over a water bath. Take up dry mass with 10 cc. strong HCI, and then.

IT is generally accepted that for transport of coal underground from different collecting stations, the system of endless rope haulage with remote control is not only one of the safest and most economIcal, but is also one of the most'efficlent in dealing with output.When the coal measures lie in regular planes, the work of laying down such a haulage presents no difficulties. When, however, the dip of the measures is Irregular, or dislocated by faulting, the management is faced with the problem of constructing vertical curves of such a radius that the sag of the rope will correspond with the road bed, and thus obviate the danger of the rope rising and throwing the skips off the track.The direction of the main roads for haulage purposes being ascertained from the plan of the royalty to be worked, the faults or dislocations in the seam are determined for these roads with the greatest possible accuracy by means of bore holes from the surface.From the data thus obtained the haulage road can generally be so graded that the rope will keep on the floor during haulage operations, although the grades may in places be synclinal.The writer confesses that he knows of no accurate formula for calculating the sag of the rope under varying tensions and so determining the safe radius of the curve, and he had to depend upon past experiences under somewhat sImilar conditions.The accompanying sections illustrate a case where the writer has recently installed an endless rope underground approximately 5000 ft. in length, from the foot of a tunnel in which an endless rope delivers the output to the screening plant, and having to negotiate, first a 400-ft. downthrow fault, and later a 32 ft. upthrow.

AIR-LOCK AT No. 14 SHAFT.Some time ago it became desirable to raise and lower the McBride tunnel men to save them walking the inclined tunnel, about a mile in length, with a dip of nearly 600 ft., and a maximum gradient of 1 in 4. The main Upcast shaft, No. 14, was, therefore, equipped for winding the men. As this shaft was the main ventilating shaft for the McBride tunnel mine, it was necessary to take the greatest precautions against leakage of air. The writer therefore devised the concrete structure shown in Plate 1.The structure, as shown, surrounds the shaft inside the poppet legs. As the men are wound on double-decked cages (twelve men to each deck) provision is made at both top and bottom for the two decks to be loaded and emptied simultaneously. The doorsover the sky shaft, shown in the drawing, have been cut out and the sky shaft has been close-timbered with a double layer of T. and G. flooring boards, with building paper between, nearly up to the thimble frame, a small hole only being left for the winding rope topass through. The space between the ramps is glazed with plate glass to allow the winding-engine driver a good view of the pit top.The men are wound from two levels, 302 ft. and 611 ft.2. The object of this paper is not to describe any particular type of engine in close technical detail but rather to give a general picture of past and present practice in this important section of the industry. The subject involves the study of almost 600 years of coal mining history which has fluctuated from stagnation to extremely rapid progress.Up to the year 1300, coal was obtained from outcrops and exposed beds, but this easily worked source soon gave out, so by that time shafts had to be sunk to the coal seams, and coal mining proper commenced its career.These early shafts were very shallow, and winding equipment was not a matter for much concern. Raising coal was generally achieved by human labour, which was called "coal bearing." Coal was loaded into baskets. strapped to a man's back, and carried from the underground workings to the pit bottom. The unfortunate individual then climbed ladders to the top of the shaft, unloaded the basket, and descended the shaft for the next load. Men, women and even children, were employed as the mine expanded, and were generally bound to the colliery for life, performing daily work which would now be regarded as slavery. This primitive method of raising coal to the surface was slow, inefficient and highly dangerous, yet for want of a better method it continued until in 1602 it isrecorded as having been abolished in Wales, one of England's great coal districts. It was not until 100 years later, however, that it was abolished in the northern coalfields, and the colliers were freed forever from their dreadful life.WINDLASSThe first step towards winding coal was the introduction of the windlass.
