The use of scrapers in mining and earthmoving operations is not new; in fact they are one of the earliest methods of bulk earthmoving. A single machine, which can load, haul, and dump material with a minimum of ancillary support is a highly productive and cost-efficient method of earthmoving. In recent times scrapers have been unpopular due to perceived problems and operational limitations, but the last couple of years have seen a resurgence in the use of scrapers in the Bowen Basin as a primary prestripping tool. The main operational limitation of scrapers is the economic operating range. Maximum productivity and lowest cost per bcm is achieved on short leads, as the lead distance increases the cost per bcm quickly reaches and then overtakes that of an truck-excavator fleet. The geometry of a ætraditionalÆ coal mine does not readily allow short leads for prestrip fleets due to the nature of dragline stripping operations. The strip arrangement means that material has to be taken around the end of the pit, meaning a longer haul distance than the actual point-to-point distance between load and dump. This can be alleviated by using pit bridges, however these can cause spoil problems for draglines if not properly planned and have been avoided by many mines. Due to the economic haul distance limitation of scrapers, truck-excavator fleets have become the normal method utilised. Currently more geologically complex mines are opening up, which do not allow traditional down-dip strip mining to occur. Cross-dip mining methods allow for short leads between prestrip loading and dumping areas, hence scrapers and bulk doze are realistic alternatives to a truck-excavator fleet in the prestrip environment. Keeping the lead distance to a minimum a fleet of 657Æs can move material at a very low cost. The other main operational limitation of scrapers is the type of material that can be economically excavated. Hard material can lead to damage to the bowl, free-flowing sand will not readily stay in the bowl leading to reduced load factors. Ripping the material with a dozer prior to excavating can lead to improved loading time, and greatly reduced GET consumption. When considering scrapers for prestrip operations a number of things must be considered: is the lead distance within the economic haul distance? should twin power (push-pull) or single power (dozer pushed) scrapers be used? do I need to rip, what should I rip with? what ancillary support is required? is there another system already available on-site which is currently under utilised? This paper considers the parameters under which large twin power scrapers are the most effective way of undertaking prestrip operations.

Utilisation of modern 3D visualisation tools, can improve our ability to correlate between different datasets, and thus to produce more accurate geological models. Here, we present an application of such techniques to the Century Zinc Deposit, northwestern Queensland, Australia. This stratiform orebody is the second largest Zn resource in the world (167.5 Mt at 8.2 per cent Zn, 1.2 per cent Pb, and 33 g/t Ag). It is hosted in the Page Creek Syncline affecting Mesoproterozoic shales and siltstones of the Wide Supersequence of the Isa Superbasin. As in other deposits, (eg McArthur River, Lady Loretta, George Fisher and Dugald River), the mineralised sequence is bound by an important regional structure, the Termite Range Fault, which partly intersects the deposit along its Eastern side. This fault is thought have been active during sedimentation and probably also during mineralisation of the lowest part of the Wide Supersequence. The anastomosing geometry of this fault system and crosscutting relationships with other NE trending structures indicate that it was reactivated several times from Mesoproterozoic to at least late Devonian times (>1000 million years in total); as a result, the ore sequence is subdivided into several fault blocks.Using two different computer modeling packages (GOCAD and 3ds max), we have reconstructed and restored the stratigraphic horizon with the highest Zn content, realised a series of isopach maps for each mine scale stratigraphic unit, plotted the three-dimensional distribution of Zn, Pb, Ag, Fe and SiO2, and have begun to evaluate the degree of correlation between thickness changes and sulphide zoning. With this approach it is possible to better understand the timing of mineralisation from a genetic perspective, because the origins of the orebody are controversial. Three-dimensional reconstruction is a vital tool for identification of syn-sedimentary and post-sedimentary fault activity. In conjunction with sulphide precipitation, these are factors that greatly influence the stratigraphic thickness distribution. Post-sedimentary deformation can be recognised directly by core logging and pit mapping, but the effect of tectonic movements during sedimentation (growth faults in particular), that represents a substantial variable when we attempt to reconstruct basin evolution, is difficult to evaluate without this methodology. The 3D models improve our understanding of the local basin architecture, identifying similar grade characteristics at different structural levels and thus suggesting that much faulting and folding are post-mineralisation events. In addition, we identified several growth faults adjacent to thickened layers, representing two possible sedimentary depocentres. These thicker domains apparently relate to the highest Pb content. If further analysis of rocks, thickness and grade distributions support this preliminary correlation, then a syn-sedimentary model for mineralisation might be applied, and would contrast with the sub-surface model for mineralisation of Broadbent et al (1998).

SINCE 1952, when Elliott et a/ first applied the Sherwood correlation for flooding in chemical absorption towers to blast furnaces numerous investigators throughout the world have followed their example and much research effort has been spent to tighten the correlation and recently to extend investigation of flooding to side gas entry conditions. The widespread use of the Sherwood concept of flooding has been such that even the word itself has become an integral part of blast furnace nomenclature. The evidence for the applicability of Sherwood's relationship has been that the flooding limits calculated from blast furnace parameters lie approximately on the Sherwood line. However, the values of many of the variables for the blast furnace calculation are only estimates and at first sight one may wonder at such 'close' coincidence when some of the estimated parameters entering the Sherwood correlation are raised to the power of three or more, as for the bed porosity and the liquid surface tension. It is felt that the explanation of this result lies in the logarithmic: nature of the plot and/or the fortuitous can- cellation of the errors of the estimates in the calculations coupled with the fact that blast furnace fluid ratios lie within a very narrow range of values. The foregoing considerations should in their own right place doubt on the correctness of the Sherwood type flooding correlation applied to the blast furnace. Additional doubt regarding the existence of the Sherwood type flooding in the furnace has been cast by the results obtained in the Tokyo University experimental blast furnace. From the reasoning of both Standish and Colquhoun (p. 20) and Warner (p. 23) it is deduced that flooding in the traditional sense will only normally occur in the upper bosh (somewhere near the mantle), following softening as discussed by Palella et a/ on p. 75, and flooding in that zone is likely to result in furnace irregularity. On the other hand, the concept developed by Warner of slag hold-up above the raceways as a stable phenomenon not affecting furnace regularity is a process unique to the blast furnace and is not described by the Sherwood flooding theory. Recognising the considerable practical implications of slag hold-up above the raceways, this note further explores the physical process of slag hold-up. We envisage that bed of coke above the raceways in almost all blast furnaces would contain some slag held up by the gas pressure gradient. In general the slag would be contained in a ring and gas would bubble through in its ascent through the furnace. The force supporting this slag is the pressure gradient and obviously -much of the blast pressure is dissipated in supporting this structure.

The paper explores the sustainability of the Australian mining industry, and the potential for application of a substitute fuel into existing mining operations. This alternative fuel biodiesel is produced from biological oils and not from refined hydrocarbons like the transport fuel diesel (petrodiesel). The fuel is compatible with all current diesel equipment with little to no modification and has many superior properties. As biodiesel is derived from biological sources it is æcarbon neutralÆ meaning there is no net carbon addition to the atmosphere when the fuel is burned. The current fuel, petrodiesel releases long stored carbon dioxide (CO2) and is of concern to Australian government targets which seek to reduce these emissions. The mining industryÆs unique reliance on petrodiesel is of particular interest when assessing the substitution of biodiesel into underground and open cut operations. The underground benefits of biodiesel see a reduction in the noxious emissions of carbon monoxide and diesel particulate matter, both contaminants which require extensive diluting ventilation to ensure safe levels. As biodiesel is both safer to store due to its higher flash point and produces less exhaust emissions, its occupational health and safety benefits in underground mines is clear. The use of biodiesel in open cut mines benefits the environmental sustainability aspects of the project. The formulation of national targets relating to carbon dioxide emission reductions promotes any measure to reduce CO2 within the mining environment. As the diesel engine is one of the least emission efficient (kWh/tonne CO2) energy sources on-site, its potential for reduction in CO2 at minimal cost is the greatest. By substituting the fuel, significant quantities of site emissions are reduced, thereby achieving the goals of improved site sustainability and the governmentÆs targets to reduce emissions. This aspect of gauging mutually beneficial relationship regarding government interests and mining industry profitability is the underlying outcome for this paper.

Formation of porphyry-style ore deposits starts with the metal extraction from magmas at so-called magmatic-hydrothermal transition (MHT). The processes and compositions at MHT are difficult to study as the record of them is poorly preserved. As the MHT is characterised by massive crystallisation of quartz, including quartz æeyesÆ and veins, their study can elucidate questions related to metal transport and deposition. Quartz grains from the porphyry deposits all over the world (Antapaccay, Peru; Batu Hijao, Indonesia; Climax, USA; Panguna, PNG; Far Southeast porphyry, Philippines; Rio Blanco, Chile; Omsukchan, Russia) were studied by optical, SEM-CL and BSE microscopy, electron microprobe and LA ICPMS. Quartz grains, even within each sample, have different shapes (rounded, egg-shaped, amoeboid or euhedral) and cathodoluminesence (CL) patterns (shape, number and width of bands in CL images). The outer layers of quartz are markedly different, which is unexpected if the grains had formed in the same conditions. Inflections and blurring of CL bands are often structurally associated with fractures that are commonly healed with secondary quartz and associated fluid inclusions. Our results show that quartz æeyesÆ could not crystallise from a silicate melt as normal phenocrysts. It is likely that in situ segregation of residual SiO2- and H2O-rich liquid and its solidification followed by coagulation (eg formation of silica-gel globules) took place in the magma (crystal mush) during MHT. Such globules could remain in a plastic state for a long time even at rather low temperatures. The solidification of globules occurred after bands of different composition had formed and led to fracturing of solidified and inflection of unconsolidated layers. All fluids (liquid and vapour) released from the original silicagel during solidification were trapped as inclusions (aqueous, salt-rich and sulfide). An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Intrusion related ore deposits are widespread in the Central Peruvian Cordillera Occidental and adjacent high-plains to the east and include porphyry Cu (-Au, Mo; eg Morococha), Cu-Zn (Pb-) skarn (eg Antamina), Pb-Zn-Ag carbonate hosted vein deposits (eg Uchucchacua), cordilleran base metal (eg Cerro de Pasco) and epithermal deposits (eg Quicay). Geochronology and petrochemistry of intrusive rocks associated with mineralisation reveals that: most ore deposits were emplaced in the late middle to early late Miocene; and are related to calc-alkaline granodioritic igneous rocks with Sm/Yb >3, Sr/Y >40 and Y/Th <1.5. The largest deposits, including Antamina, Colquijirca and Cerro de Pasco are associated with intrusions with Sm/Yb >4 and which, as indicated by Pb and Sr isotopic data, have undergone relatively moderate middle and upper crustal assimilation. The chemical signature of igneous rocks related to mineralisation likely reflects melt equilibration in the lower crust at a crustal thickness of more than 45 km. Mineralisation was favoured by a change from normal to flat subduction, resulting in increased compression, crustal thickening and subsequent cessation of the magmatic arc. Premiocene ore deposits do occur, but are restricted to a broad E-W corridor between Uchucchacua and Milpo and probably were controlled by a crustal-scale structural discontinuity across the strike of theAndes. Not all igneous rocks with high Sm/Yb and Sr/Y ratios did acquire their trace element signature in the lower crust. Petrographic and Pb isotopic evidence indicates shallow crustal hornblende fractionation or assimilation of pelitic material as possible causes for high trace element ratios in some rocks. These are apparently unrelated to polymetallic mineralisation. Thus, critical evaluation of petrographic and geochemical data in metallogenetic studies, especially in areas with complex basement architecture such as Central Peru is critical and should not be reduced to simple trace element ratios. The concept of underground grinding is not new, but to a metallurgist and a mining engineer this could be considered unconventional. The idea of pumping a ground slurry several hundred metres from underground in a single lift could also be considered to present a daunting engineering challenge. Using a practical example of a mine in Australia where the owners have requested not to be identified, this paper challenges the conventional thoughts on these concepts and shows that with basic sound engineering practices the production of a ground slurry from underground could potentially provide significant operating cost savings. The supply of ore from the underground mine is currently drawn from depths approaching 800 m below the surface. The cost of hauling the ore to the existing underground crushing station located 500 m below surface has been steadily increasing. A number of alternatives to reduce the mining and processing unit operating costs were examined by Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) and the mining company. The most radical of these is the use of hydraulic hoisting of ore at an increased production rate. Numerous questions were asked, such as: How does one get a SAG mill or an HPGR crusher underground? Where does one locate a grinding mill underground? Does the technology exist to pump the slurry to surface in a single lift? What will be the cost benefits? What are the risks involved? The study covered the two main technical issues underlying the potential benefits. Firstly, technical evaluations were undertaken on the pumping technology currently available for single and multiple lifts to surface. Secondly, the issues relating to the feasibility of delivering and locating a SAG mill underground were reviewed. Although the capital costs for this project are significant, the operating cost savings showed a potential payback period of less than two years, and furthermore provide the basis for an increased mine life, especially at lower metal prices.

THE object of this note is to set forth some particulars of the effect of light on cinnabar occurring in a deposit of this mineral at Puhipubi, in the North Auckland peninsula of New Zealand. This deposit is contained within a gently-inclined sheet of siliceous sinter forminga hillock called Mount Mitchell, and is particularly notable in that it is an instance of the simultaneous deposition of cinnabar and silica on a large scale. The mercury-bearing material varies in character from semi-porous sinter to dense translucent cbalcedony, of which the former is stained to various shades of pink, the latter to brilliant reds and vermilion. On exposure to daylight-and particularly to sunlight - these colours change to corresponding shades of translucent bluish-grey. As a direct result of this change the Mount Mitchell deposit remained unknown until some ten years ago, for, while prospectors early discovered cinnabar in the adjacent city and in a neighbouring stream bed, none of them recognized this mineral in the bluish chalcedony strewing portions of the surface of the Mount. The writer has carried out a series of experiments designed to indicate the cause and nature of this change, and to form a basis for the elaboration of more delicate experiments which would yield positive information. Circumstances, however, have so far combined to prevent the continuation of the research, and, as there seems little prospect of the writer being able to do more work on the subject, it seems well to publish the data so far obtained. Prior to describing this colour change, the writer would point out the desirability of restricting the meaning of the term cinnabar to the naturally occurring red sulphide of mercury; this would eliminate the ambiguities which arise from its indiscriminate application, in chemical literature, to both natural and artificial sulphides. Further the term cinnabarite having long since fallen into disuse, there appears to be no good reason for retaining the companionterm "metacinnabarite" when reduction to "metacinnabar" would preserve the meaning in a less clumsy word.

Many hydrometallurgical and chemical processes produce large amounts of acid waste. This is illustrated by the copper S/X-E/W process used at the Mount Gordon mine in North Queensland, which produces a tank house bleed in the form of a concentrated sulphuric acid stream. The bleed stream is necessary to remove impurities such as iron that decrease the efficiency of the electrowinning process. However, this bleed stream comes at a high financial cost due to large quantities of make up sulphuric acid required as well as the need to neutralise the bleed stream prior to disposal. The present work describes the approach taken to develop a solvent extraction process for the selective recovery of sulphuric acid from copper tank house bleed liquor. The proposed extraction system was investigated using a branched long chain aliphatic tertiary amine tris(2-ethylhexyl)amine (TEHA) as the extractant, Shellsol 2046 as the diluent and octanol as a modifier. Computer simulations were used to determine the optimum operating conditions for the recovery process. It was found that the process was able to selectively recover up to 90 per cent of the sulphuric acid from the copper electrolyte. This is recovered as a pure aqueous acid stream at a concentration of up to 130 g/L that can be recycled back into the tank house circuit or other areas of the process. The raffinate acid concentration was reduced from 180 g/L to as low as 18 g/L, significantly reducing waste disposal and the environmental impact of the copper process. The equilibrium data and simulation results were also compared with an alternative extractant, CYANEXR 923. Finally the efficiency of the TEHA extraction system was investigated on a pilot-scale in a pulsed perforated plate column. This information was used in order to scale the process for an industrial application. The same methodology applied in this case study could be used to provide innovative and cost-effective solutions to waste streams encountered in other hydrometallurgical or chemical processes.

Chile, which hosts around 30 per cent of the worldÆs copper resources, is now the largest producer and exporter of copper. Chilean copper output accounts for more than one-quarter of total worldwide production. An increase to around 40 per cent is forecast by the end of the century. In addition, Chile ranks eighth in silver production and 11th in gold output. In Chile, mining generates more than eight per cent of the countryÆs GDP and the total value of mineral exports is more than US $7.85 billion corresponding to more than 25 per cent of South AmericaÆs mineral production. The rate of growth of Chilean mineral production is indeed impressive. Table 1 shows that in the period 1969 - 1998, copper annual production increased 564 per cent from 667 000 t to 3 764 000 t. Gold production went up 27 times from 1827 to 49 770 kg. Silver output grew 1219 per cent from 95 650 kg produced in 1969 to 1 166 380 kg in 1998. Several facts explain this dramatic increase of production, but the most important was the success of exploration sustained over the same period. This resulted in the discovery of several world-class deposits which when developed into mines, account for much of the production increases. Therefore, this summary review shows the success of basic exploration carried out during the last 30 years in the Chilean territory. The review is based on data already published in different specialised mining books or magazines. It only includes those world-class discoveries not the lesser discoveries important at local scale. All figures were calculated using 1998 $US dollar and average estimated metal prices valid for 1999: copper $US 1653 per t ($US 0.75 per pound), gold $US 9452 per kg ($US 294 per ounce) and silver $US 177 per kg ($US 5.5 per ounce).

The ocean floor, often called the last frontier, is increasingly discussed in terms of its resource potential û from near shore building aggregate and placer deposits to massive sulfide orebodies in the deeper ocean. Consequently there is an increasing incentive to mine the seafloor. But, do we have the social license to explore and mine the seafloor? Does this nascent industry have support amongst the wider community? If not, why not? And what should be done? To answer some of these questions, the Wealth from Oceans National Research Flagship has explored the social viability of an expanded seafloor exploration and mining (SEM) industry inAustralia. The results show that there are significant geological and environmental data gaps and that, in the absence of sufficient information, stakeholder reaction to the prospect of an SEM industry expansion may be reactionary and negative. This uncertainty means that the perception of risk from the industry is variable and often dependent on individual values. The acceptability of an expansion to the SEM industry is currently precarious, in particular due to the high levels of uncertainty regarding the environmental impacts of seafloor activity. While there are existing federal regulatory frameworks and government processes for the licensing of seafloor mineral exploration and extraction, there is little precedent in the application and implementation of these regulations. The future viability of the industry will be highly dependant on AustraliaÆs ability to improve the knowledge-base underpinning its regulatory regime and also to generate open and transparent communication channels between stakeholders. It will also be dependent on the SEM industryÆs ability to communicate an acceptable value proposition to society. This proposition will need to include the relative impacts of terrestrial and marine mining, the alternative potential uses of the ocean and the multi-use conflict that SEM might engender. Porphyry-related skarns are common around thePacific Rim. Examples include Cadia and Goonumbla (Australia) Ok Tedi (PNG) and Ertsberg and Grasberg (Indonesia). Although usually treated as separate to the adjacent porphyry copper-gold (Cu-Au) deposit, skarns near porphyry deposits are commonly inextricably part of the larger Cu-Au system(s). Using Cadia as the primary example, we demonstrate that large, zoned, calc-silicate skarns necessitate very large porphyry systems. The Big Cadia and Little Cadia Fe-Cu-Au skarns are associated with the Late Ordovician to Early Silurian high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic Cadia Intrusive Complex (CIC). Together, these skarns total ~40 Mt of Cu-Au ore but are much smaller than the adjacent Cadia EastûFar East, Cadia Hill, and Ridgeway porphyry-related Cu-Au deposits. Historically these skarns were large, economically significant and highly controversial deposits. Porphyry-related skarns typically have well-developed calc-silicate and ore zonation. At Cadia, classic skarn zonation has been mapped between Cadia Quarry (proximal) and Big Cadia (distal). Over this 800 minterval, mineralogy trends from: proximal garnet > pyroxene, grading to; fe-oxide-rich skarn; and distal haematite-epidote-rich skarn. At Little Cadia, analogous but symmetrical alteration zonation is present. Big Cadia formed from fluids that migrated laterally within calcareous units and were sourced from strongly altered quartz monzonite phases of the CIC at Cadia Quarry. Isotope studies and mass-balance calculations suggest that prograde and retrograde skarn alteration was caused by magmatic dominated fluids. They also indicate that the mapped alteration system at Cadia Quarry is insufficient to account for the total volume of Fe present at Big Cadia. Despite the typically oxidised nature of many porphyry systems, not all skarns in the porphyry environment are oxidised. Assimilation of carbonaceous sediment by hydrous, alkaline intrusions could lead to reduced Au skarns rather than porphyry deposits. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. This Is not a highly technical paper, but rather an attempt to give a general outline of coal mining for the benefit of those present who may have little or no experience in the industry, and is intended to give some general knowledge which may help to a better understanding of the problems of the industry. A knowledge of the disposition of workable material is necessary to give a comparison with other mining practices. Coal Is usually found in comparatively fiat seams of varying thickness, whereas other minerals are generally found in highly inclined lodes of variable width. However, even in comparatively flat seams unaffected by faulting, grades can, and do, vary greatly over short distances.This variation causes many local problems in working the small area affected. Even very steep seams, and some are much steeper than 1 in 1, vary considerably not only in grade, but also in direction of grade and level course. This is probably caused by folding during alteration of the shape and form of the basins after deposition.These swellies are common to most coal seams and vary only in extent. This type of variation in grade and direction of grade, while common to most ore bodies, is a matter of great importance in coal mining when it is considered that roadways are driven in the seam itself and have to be graded and made suitable for haulage purposes.The area of ground involved in an individual coal mining operation is often very large; many times larger than most metal mining propositions, and often comprises many thousands of acres.When it is considered that the specific gravity of coal may be only one-fifth of that of some ores mined, and the coal seam may be five or six feet in thickness, the vastness of the area necessary for continuous mining operations over many years will be realised.To achieve comparable outputs, with about five times the bulk of material to handle, much more ground and working places must...

In July 1994 the Premier, John Fahey MP, announced that the New South Wales Government would make available a total of $40 million over six years in new funding for the Department of Mineral Resources. These funds are to be applied directly to the generation of regional geological and geophysical information. The Government's initiative known as `Discovery 2000', is aimed at providing a major boost to the exploration industry. The Government expects new discoveries to be made and new mines to be developed because of the initiative and, perhaps, the first ever commercial oil or gas production in New South Wales. The Government's return will come from increased economic activity, and from the increased royalty return from higher levels of production. Quality information is the key to successful exploration. In the highly competitive business of mineral and petroleum exploration high quality regional geological and geophysical information improve both the efficiency and effectiveness of the area selection or project generation process. Using the `needle in the hay stack' analogy, Discovery 2000 will vastly improve industry's chances of finding the haystacks. It is up to the mineral and petroleum industries to find their respective `needles'. Careful target area selection is probably the most critical factor in mineral exploration. The ability to select the most prospective areas, or to identify prospectivity that others have failed to recognise, can make all the difference between success and failure. Government geological surveys clearly have a crucial role to play in providing the geoscientific information infrastructure that companies must have if they are to make the discoveries this country needs to pay its way in the world. It is the regional information generated by Governments that sets the scene for efficient exploration. This regional information includes regional aeromagnetics and radiometrics and gravity, regional geological mapping and tectonic analysis, and geoscientific databases. The New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources (by various names) has been providing such information for over 100 years and has led the way in many aspects of the generation and dissemination of geological, geophysical and metallogenic Information.

Ok Tedi Mining Limited commenced construction in mid-1981 of facilities and infrastructure to mine and process gold ore at Mt Fubilan in Papua ew Guinea. Production ofgold began more or less on schedule in mid-1984 although design capacity is yet to be achieved. Due to geotechnical problems, two important items of infrastructure, hydropower and permanent tailings disposal, are not yet in place. Current low metal prices make it likely that copper facilities will be postponed.The deposit compriscs a leached gold capping overlying copper sulphide porphyry mineralisation containing significant gold and molybdenum. Mining is by open pit methods. The soft leached capping gold ore is ripped and dozed, loaded by hydraulic shovel and trucked to a dump pocket. After passing a large semi-autogenous mill of nominal capacity of I, I00 tonnes per hour, the ore is treated by the carbon-inpulp process, with a gravity circuit to recover coarse gold. The final product is 12 kg dore bullion bars.At present, all tailings are detoxified with hydrogen peroxide; after cycloning, the coarse fraction is stored, and the slime fraction discharged into the river system; expected environmental impact is acceptable. Investigations for a suitable dam site for a permanent tailings system are still underway.Peak 'I. hour power demand for Stage I is 17 MW, presently supplied by a diesel alternator power station and a 2 MW mini hydropower plant.Initial access to the base camp at Tabubil was only by air. Eventually a road was pushed through 134 km from the river port at Kiunga (where port facilities have been constructed) and a further 23 km to Mt Fubilan.Roads are constructed of compacted gravel and crushed limestone generally underlain by geofabric. Eight major steel bridges were built.The town of Tabubil has been established, including housing, airport, shops, offices, schools and all facilities.Environmental studies have been extensive and a detailed monitoring program is maintained. Ok Tedi Mining Limited is making considerable efforts to train Papua New Guineans and to foster local business.

Georgius Agricola wrote in De Re Metallica in 1556 that a prudent a miner should not work in a region ruled by a tyrant-a person inimical to mining. In 1926, Associate Chief Sherman of the United States Forest Service in a speech stated, "It is the policy of the Forest Service to encourage the development of the mineral resources within the boundaries of the National Forests ... a man who fails to cultivate a friendly, helpful, cooperative spirit in his relations with those who are endeavoring to develop the mineral wealth of our mountains has no place in the Forest Service." Both statements are as true today as they were in 1556 and 1926. The challenge to the Forest Service and the mineral industry today is to maintain that cooperation in a world that has changed significantly since Agricola and Sherman. The United States Forest Service manages 77,000,000 hectares of land-mostly in the Western United States-an area equal in size to New South Wales. The vast majority-75 million hectares are National Forests, and 1.6 million hectares are National Grasslands. National Wilderness Areas account for 13 million hectares or rough- ly 17 per cent of the National Forest System. National Forest System lands (NFS) are some of the most visible, scenic and controversial lands in the country. They are also some of the most valuable for their mineral potential and production. The value of mineral produced exceeds US$4 billion per year. There are over 1200 producing mines, 15,000 oil and gas leases, and some of the largest lead, copper, silver, gold, platinum, molyb- denum, and coal deposits in the hemisphere. Every year the Forest Service approves nearly 5,000 mineral operations on the NFS. Much of the NFS (75 per cent) is open to location of mining claims pursuant to the 1872 Mining Law. And an equal amount of land is legally available for oil and gas leasing.

The majority of published material regarding the operation of crushing machinery is concerned with simulation of performance rather than design of equipment. The reason underlying the bias in published material relates to why research is carried out and who undertakes the research. Two distinct types of research can be identified: 1. Internal research by crusher manufacturers - generally related to mechanical design, value engineering and to the commercial realities attached to sales demands. Any work on basic crusher geometry or rock/machine interaction is of a sensitive nature and rarely enters the public domain. 2. Academic research - mostly confined to modelling of crusher performance and simulation. This is not because of any bias, but crusher design requires access to manufacturers data or at least an in-depth understanding of crusher design, which is rarely available. The crushing of rock is a complicated problem. It involves three aspects; the machine geometry, the material composition (type of rock/feed size distribution) and the machine/rock interaction. The machine geometry is often ignored in empirical mineral processing simulations, while the response of different feed materials is only nominally addressed in machine specifications provided by manufacturers. The manner by which the machine produces a stress field and causes different types of breakage for different rocks (or the machine/rock interaction) is sadly neglected by both groups. All three aspects must be considered collectively to successfully understand and model the entire crushing process. 1. The importance of crushing is often underestimated. In mining and mineral processing the invisibility of the crushing process is understandable as it merely provides a coarse reduction stage prior to the intricacies of mineral extraction. However in the quarrying industry crushing and screening basically provide the finished product. A brief overview of the quarrying industry shows the importance of crushing. Figure 1 gives production figures for most of the western European countries, Australia and the USA.
