The Mabilo copper-gold-magnetite skarn deposit is located in southern Luzon in the Paracale mineral district, where iron has been produced historically from several skarn deposits. Mabilo occurs in the south-west of the district and is distinct and significant because of its high grades of copper and gold compared to historical mines.The Mabilo licence surrounds the Venida prospect, where past small-scale mining has exploited iron, copper and gold mineralisation in oxidised skarn. A ground magnetic survey in 2007 defined a number of strong anomalies under Quaternary volcanic cover south of Venida. The property was acquired by Sierra Mining Ltd in 2011, the magnetic data were remodelled and drilling commenced in September 2012. Diamond drill hole MDH001 targeted the strongest anomaly, which was 500 m south of Venida and under 20 m of volcanic cover. It intersected 94 m with an average grade of 2.2 per cent copper, 1.6 g/t gold and 36.6 per cent iron. Subsequent drilling was targeted by magnetic modelling, incorporating magnetic susceptibility data from drill core, which resulted in a high percentage of successful drill holes.The mineralised skarn preferentially replaces a dipping limestone unit within an Eocene sequence dominated by volcanic siltstone and sandstone, metamorphosed to marble and hornfels in the aureole of a Miocene quartz-diorite intrusion. Skarn occurs discontinuously along the eastern and southern diorite contact, controlled by primary sedimentary facies variation, structural geometry, fault offsets and intrusive contacts.Coarse magnetite skarn with garnet and minor wollastonite and clinopyroxene contains variably abundant chalcopyrite and minor molybdenite. Magnetite skarn occurs in sharp contact with unaltered marble or grades into garnet skarn with minor chalcopyrite. Structurally controlled retrograde skarn alteration is strong to intense and is characterised by bornite, clinozoisite, iron carbonate and chlorite. The retrograde skarn is weakly overprinted by late-stage pyrite veining and brecciation associated with clay-silica alteration with arsenopyrite and tetrahedrite-tennantite.The quartz-diorite stock is interpreted as the source of the prograde skarn-forming and mineralising fluids. Late-stage porphyritic intrusions in the contact zone indicate continuing magmatism during uplift, when telescoping led to a high-level, high-sulfidation overprint. The duration of acid mine drainage flowing out of underground mines is important in the design of watershed restoration and abandoned mine land reclamation projects. People conducting land reclamation projects usually employ remediation strategies once (reshaping land, revegetating soils, and installing water treatment) with the hope that these methods will adequately improve water quality for a long time, with little planning for future changes. An understanding of changing acid water conditions from underground mines over time will help in designing efficient and cost-effective treatment methods. Past studies have reported that acid water flows from underground mines for hundreds of years with little change, while others state that poor drainage quality may last only 20 to 40 years. Several factors are important in making a prediction of drainage quality over time, such as inundation or flooding history, coal seam characteristics (primarily sulfur content), residence time of water in the mine, time since mine closure, mining method and amount of coal remaining, collapse of roof and other disturbances within the mine, and subsequent nearby surface mining. More than 150 above-drainage (those not flooded after abandonment) underground mine discharges were located and sampled during 1968 in northern West Virginia, and we revisited 44 of those sites in 2000 and measured water flow, pH, acidity, alkalinity, Fe, Al, and sulfate. All 44 discharges were from mines in the Pittsburgh and Upper Freeport coal seams, and both seams have been extensively mined in this area during the past 70 years. We sampled during the same months (June to October) as were sampled in 1968, and we found no significant difference in flows between 1968 and 2000. Therefore, we felt that the water quality data could be compared and that the data represented real changes in pollutant concentrations. There were significant water quality differences between year and coal seam, but no differences between disturbed and undisturbed mines. Average acidity declined 79 per cent between 1968 and 2000 in Pittsburgh mines (from 3342 to 702 mg/L), and 56 per cent in Upper Freeport mines (from 1189 to 519 mg/L). Iron decreased an average of about 80 per cent across all sites (from an average of 345 to 69 mg/L), while sulfate decreased between 50 to 75 per cent. Pittsburgh seam discharge water was much worse in 1968 than Upper Freeport seam water. Twenty of our 44 sites had water quality information during 1980, which served as a midpoint to assess the slope of the decline in acidity and metal concentrations. Almost all parameters showed an exponential rate of decline in acidity, iron, and sulfate.

Strong research support is needed in parallel with the process of innovation and commercialisation, in building a deeper understanding of the underpinning physicochemical and hydrodynamic forces that deliver the separations, in achieving improvements, in the deployment of a new technology, and in expanding the innovation platform to create new IP. External investment beyond the research, derived from the genuine value proposition of transformational change, funds the pathway for traversing the so-called Valley of Death.

Subsea massive sulfide deposits have particular mineralogical compositions and textural features differentiating them from onshore ore. When extracted from salty water and exposed to the air, massive sulfide samples strongly oxidise and soon become covered by thin layers of iron, copper and zinc-rich sulfates and oxides, as well as elemental sulfur. The textural properties vary according to the degree of maturity and the sample position within the hydrothermal deposit. Because of the variation of secondary mineralisation and porosity level, sea floor massive sulfides respond differently from terrestrial ore to processing methods. Froth flotation, commonly applied to separate all types of sulfides from the gangue minerals, is one possible treatment technique to process sea floor ore. Sulfide recovery rate is, in most cases, excellent (>90 per cent). However, separation of the various mineral phases is difficult to obtain even when applying known methods used for onshore ore. Moreover, the flotation behaviour decreases dramatically with time of conservation, even when the samples were stored in a confined environment. High pH range, which is a good way to depress pyrite and therefore to favour the flotation of copper and zinc sulfides, does not have the same effect on subsea ore. Consequently, careful flotation procedure should be elaborated to obtain efficient mineral separation for this specific marine ore.CITATION:Filippov, L O and Filippova, I V, 2015. The distribution ratio of Pb (LPb s/m) between three types of slags (FeOx–SiO2, CaO–FeOx and FeOx– CaO–SiO2) and molten copper after equilibrium was measured at 1300°C and oxygen partial pressure (pO2) of 10-10–10-6 atm. Results showed that for FeOx–SiO2 slag, the LPb s/m increased from 0.024 to 2.57 with pO2 increased from 10-10 to 10-6 atm. The LPb s/m with CaO–FeOx slag was lower than the FeOx–SiO2 slag at the same pO2, ranging between 0.015 and 0.53. Using the FeOx–CaO– SiO2 slag generated LPb s/m values (0.02–1.6) in between. The oxygen partial pressure in the investigated range had no obvious effect on the activity coefficient of PbO (γPbO) which was averagely 0.44, 1.70 and 0.71 for FeOx–SiO2, CaO–FeOx and FeOx–CaO–SiO2 slags, respectively. The increases in the (CaO+MgO)/SiO2 mass ratio of the FeOx–CaO–SiO2 slag induced the decrease in the LPb s/m and the increase in the γPbO value. However, the variation in the Fe/SiO2 mass ratio didn’t exert obvious effects.

In order to develop the HF-free flotation reagent system, the main objective of this investigation was to study the possibility of separation of quartz from feldspar using non-ionic surfactants as the collector. The non-ionic surfactants used were polyoxyethyl cethyl ether (PECE) and polyethylene glycol monocethyl ether (PGME). The flotation behaviour of quartz and microcline with PECE and PGME was investigated. Each surfactant was a good selective collector for quartz with its recovery being influenced by pH and surfactant concentration. Quartz is floated favourably by both types of polyoxyethylene non-ionic surfactant whereas microcline was not so much. The floatability of quartz increases as the oxyethylene length of surfactants increases. Zeta potential measurements in the system of PGME/mineral were also carried out. It was determined that in the absence of PGME the points of zero charge for quartz and microcline should be approximately at pH 2.5 and 1.8, respectively. The addition of PGME to the system causes both minerals to become less negatively charged. Differences in the zeta potential value between quartz and microcline, in the presence of PGME, were detected. It can be suggested that the interaction of the oxyethylene group to the microcline surface should not be as strong as that to the quartz surface. In the mixed surfactant system of PGME and dodecylamine acetate (DAA), a small addition of DAA causes drastic enhancement of quartz flotation in the wide pH range of 1 ~ 10. Nautilus Minerals (Nautilus) is a sea floor resource exploration and development company focused on developing the Solwara 1 Project, a copper-gold sea floor massive sulfide deposit in the territorial waters of Papua New Guinea, for which it holds a mining lease and associated environment permit.During the environmental impact assessment and project development phase, Nautilus completed a number of hydrodynamic modelling exercises in order to predict the nature, volume and extent of the plumes likely to be generated by the sea floor mining tools and return water discharge at the sea floor.The modelling was conducted using the suspended sediment fate model (SSFATE), developed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers and RPS APASA engineering consultants. The SSFATE model was originally developed in order to predict and manage dredging plumes, and has since been adapted for deep ocean sea floor mining. The model uses a Lagrangian approach to remove the limitations of grid resolution, and simulates far-field effects of sedimentation plumes by assuming that the average transport and turbulence associated with currents are dominant over the initial turbulence at the release point. The random walk procedure utilised in the model tracks particle size classes as they disperse and settle, and also takes into consideration any re-suspension that may occur following settlement (RPS APASA, 2014).CITATION:Grogan, R, 2016. EcoTechnology refers to a series of potential metallurgical processes for complex ores, concentrates, tailings and slags that are all based on an initial chlorination step at low to moderate temperatures probably in a fluid bed chlorinator (FBC). Examples of the research and development (R&D) results are provided in this paper for a high grade Au/Sb Leach Tailings (EcoGold<sub>®</sub> Process), a very refractory sulphide Au concentrate, a refractory gold calcine tailings, a Cu/Au tailings (EcoCopper<sub>®</sub> Process), bulk polymetallic sulphide concentrates and polymetallic sulphide/oxide complex ores (EcoZinc<sub>®</sub> Process and EcoLead<sub>®</sub> Process). R&D on over thirty different ore types has been conducted at a bench scale as discussed. Latterly a dedicated pilot plant was designed and constructed by EcoTech Mining Pty Ltd (EML) and several of the different feed stock results have been confirmed by pilot plant testing. It is planned to scale up to a commercial demonstration plant. To demonstrate the versatility of EcoTechnology, bench and pilot plant test results on five of the projects are used as case studies as follows: Fosterville ‘leach tailing’, VIC; Wiluna flotation concentrate – BIOX Feed, WA; Wiluna calcine facility tailings, WA; Mt Morgan Cu/Au tailings, QLD; Polymetallic sulphide concentrates from Pegmont Deposit, QLD and Polymetallic sulphide/oxide ores from Commonwealth Mine Project, NSW. In this year marking the centennial of the Geological survey of Western Australia, it is appropriate that we should review the value of the contribution of the Survey, and Australian Geological Surveys in general, to the exploration industry. Most geological surveys in Europe and North America had their origins in the first half of the 19th Century when the burgeoning Industrial Revolution was demanding the identification of new sources of coal and iron ore. Australia, as a young nation, essentially dependent on an agricultural and pastoral industry, and with already discovered vast coal resources in Eastern Australia, had, no great need to explore for new mineral resources. However, with the discovery of gold in 1851, the mineral potential of the country became apparent to the whole world and the first Geological Survey in Australia was set up in 1852 in Victoria under A.R.C. Selwyn. After a number of false starts all Australian States had an established Geological Survey by 1900. It is hard to assess the contemporary value of the early work of the Geological Surveys with respect to exploration, almost all major mineral discoveries were made by prospectors and most mining companies had little time for geologists - although the Chamber of Mines in Western Australia in 1910, did recommend that the Geological survey be granted an additional ten thousand pounds over two years to map all existing goldfields and the country between them, and produce a reconnaissance map of the area east of a line between Wiluna and Edjudina as far as the South Australian border!

The accuracy with which block values are known can have a fundamental effect on the success of an operation.From a geostatistical study the variance of the error in extending sample values to block values can be determined and the engineer must ensure that this is sufficiently small by adjusting the size of blocks or moreintensive sampling. A study is given for a deposit showing a high degree of anisotropy and it is shown that the shape of the block is not important in determining the estimates.

It is the commonly held belief that, because the separation of liquids from solids takes place considerably faster in high rate thickeners than in conventional thickeners, high rate thickeners (HRT's) must use more flocculant than conventional thickeners. Data collected from a wide range of thickener users in Australasia and data presented in the literature is analysed. In addition, pilot plant data, with direct comparisons between HRT's and conventional thickeners, is presented. It is concluded that the flocculant consumption for both thickener types is in the same range.

An ore reserve estimation is only as meaningful as the quality of the data used. All required information needs to be collected in a careful and systematic manner, and be rigorously checked and verified before estimation commences. In addition to geological, assay and location data, a large variety of other information is required for the estimation process. This includes mining, metallurgical and environmental parameters. Though outside their usual area of responsibility, geologists should be involved in the selection and collection of this additional Information.

The availability of three-dimensional computer hardware and software makes the solid modelling of geological entities a realistic and logical alternative to previous sectional and plan 'models'.The success of underground mining operations depends largely on the ability to accurately predict the three-dimensional location and grade of mineralisation in order to maximise the extraction of resources and minimise mining dilution. Deformation of the lithosphere by tectonic forces is investigated from both observational and theoretical standpoints. Global and regional geophysical data bases, coupled with the means for their rapid display and analysis, facilitate recognition of areas of the con- tinents and oceans where the response of the lithosphere to these deforming processes might fruitfully be studied. Gravity anomalies, from Seasat altimeter data and from land and shipboard measurements, provide critical infor- mation on the isostatic state of deformed lithosphere and therefore on its thermal and mechanical properties.

Portman Mining Pty Ltd very successfully operated the Ferro GullyNorth Mine in the Hamersley Province of Western Australia to satisfy a contract for the delivery of six million tonnes of iron ore in less than two years to the Mount Newman Mining Co Pty Ltd. The high-grade ore extracted from Ferro Gully North Mine was unusual in that, not only was it within the Joffre Member of the Brockman Formation, but it was rich in red ochreous hematite and martite and very low in phosphorus.

This paper describes major events in the design, construction, camtissioning and operation of the Elura concentrator. It covers the period fran September, 1974 when laboratory testwork on drill core cotmenced to March, 1983 when the concentrator catmenced operation on run of mine ore following successful completion of initial ccnmissioning tests. The concentrator was designed to treat 1.1 million tonnes of lead-zinc-silver ore per year with a plant availability of 89 per cent. This treatment rate has been achieved for test periods.

Mathematical models of autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding mills have now reached a stage of development where they can be usefully applied to practical problems. In particular, the models are suitable for inclusion in simulations of grinding circuits to study the effects of cir- cuit changes, variations in ore type and changes in throughput. The paper describes a simulation study of the Elura grinding circuit where the empha- sis was on investigating methods of reducing product size from an autogenous mill-ball mill grinding circuit.

North Stradbroke Island is a large sand mass offshore from south east Queensland. Dredging for mineral sands commenced there in 1956 and the rehabilitation discussed in this paper was commenced in 1967. The frontal dunes have a long history of instability, with little vegetation prior to mining. Re-establishment of the naturally stable contours is essential, and their rehab- ilitation is described. Vegetated high dunes present different problems requiring attention to regeneration of the native species. Methods developed over the past eight years are proving successful.,
