Coal mining in the Pittsburgh coal seam, in the eastern United States, began in the late-1700s. Since that time numerous mining technologies have been used throughout the basin. Environmental concerns, particularly mine discharge quality, have only been considered since the early-1970s. During the last 20 years, many of the larger underground mines have closed and are now either flooding or already flooded. In order to understand the consequences and potential future effects of this flooding, mine mapping of the basin has been compiled utilising a geographic information system (GIS) with an emphasis on locating barrier pillars between mines. Mine flooding has been monitored at numerous sites utilising pressure transducers and data loggers. These data have been combined with historical data from mining companies and structure contour maps to yield chronological flooding maps of the basin from 1980 to present. Utilising these maps and the indicated flooding rates, future discharge locations have been identified along with estimates of when these discharges are likely to occur. Related work has identified barrier pillar hydraulic conductivities and vertical infiltration rates as a function of overburden thickness. All of this information has been integrated into a groundwater flow model that simulates mine flooding. This model is useful in defining mine to mine interactions as the various mines fill with water, and the testing of various flooding scenarios. The model will be used in evaluating mine discharge rates and evaluating the options for regional mine drainage treatment.

Mineral occurrences of the Hillgrove Au-Sb-W district are hosted in late Palaeozoic polydeformed, hornfelsed metasediments and Permo-Carboniferous granitoids of the NewEngland Orogen. In excess of 204 individual occurrences have been identified to date with the mineralisation developed as strike extensive (>20 km of known veining) and potentially depth extensive steeply dipping fissures. These are contained within an elongate area measuring some 9 km by 6 km in surface dimensions. Recorded gold production of 720 000 ounces along with current resources in the order of 340 000 ounces highlight the significance of this district. Historical antimony production is estimated at in excess of 50 000 metric tonnes. Significant tungsten of over 2000 t in the form of scheelite has also been produced from the field. Mineralisation is developed in veins, vein breccias, sheeted veins, network stockworks and as alteration sulfide haloes to the main structures. The vast majority of fissures are subvertical and vary in widths of up to 20 m in places. Paragenetic studies have previously indicated that the earliest mineralising event was a scheelite-bearing phase of quartz veining. Subsequent phases of arsenopyrite-pyrite-quartz-carbonate veining were accompanied by gold and minor base metal sulfides. Alteration is typically sericite-ankerite-quartz. Overprinting stibnite-quartz veining with gold-electrum, aurostibite and arsenopyrite form an important subsequent phase. Veining can be inferred from historical records to extend for vertical depths of over 1 km.

AND INTRODUCTION The Lochiel coal deposit, a large Tertiary soft brown coal deposit in the mid north of South Australia, is currently being investigated by the Electricity Trust of South Australia (ETSA) as a potential source of fuel for a base load power station. Feasibility studies indicated that the proposed dragline method of overburden removal was viable but economically sensitive to both highwail and dump batter angles. The unusual properties of the unconsolidated overburden sediments and the groundwater regime posed a number of intimately related hydrogeological and geotechnical questions which were addressed before and during the excavation of a trial pit. All strata at Lochiel are of soil strength, and artesian aquifers occur above and below the coal. From the initial evaluation of the deposit a number of hydrogeological questions were defined. These related to the rate at which the pore pressure in the silts is reduced by dewatering, the extent of the reduction in pore pressure due to prestripping, and the feasibility of dewatering and depressurising carbonaceous silty sand sequences. The site of the trial pit was selected to answer these and other questions from the basis of a detailed geological, hydrogeological and geotechnical understanding. The trial pit dewatering system simulated a full scale mine dewatering system and included ten pumped wells, twenty drainage wells, and nearly 400 monitoring instruments. It operated from September 1986 to June 1987. The excavation was carried out between February and May 1987.

Oxygen was in restricted use at Port Kembla until tonnage oxygen became available for steelmaking in the open hearth furnaces. In adopting the new process various modifications to furnace design and operation were necessary and some of these, including increase in roof height and variation in firing and draft control, are discussed.The design of oxygen lances is also discussed and various steelmakingtechniques considered.Steel production increased with oxygen roof lancing-one- furnace producing 8,507 tons in one week-but new problems, such as rate of refractory wear, and disposal of fumes, were created.Design of future open hearth oxygen furnaces is predicted.INTRODUCTIONIn the post-war era, the availability of "tonnage" oxygen caused a major revolution in steelmaking techniques. Various pneumatic processes showed that steel can be madeat a very fast rate and that oxygen steelmaking can be applied to open hearth furnaces. Methods used are surface impingement with roof lances, bath injection with door lances, flame enrichment with fuel firing, mixed gas and oxygen firing, and enrichment of normal combustion air by oxygen injection into the flue systems.Owing to its previous restricted availability and high cost, oxygen was used in rather small quantities in the open hearth furnaces at Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd.(A.I. & S.), Port Kembla, until about the middle of 1960.At that time tonnage oxygen became available and roof lancing commenced on No. 33 furnace at No. 2' open hearth shop.

Mine ventilation models are now an accepted component of most mine management systems. However, modern ventilation models also represent a highly structured spatial data source, defining underground pathways and connections across a mine. This creates opportunities to extend the use of network models beyond ventilation design, by using critical path algorithms to find pathways such as minimum distance or minimum time.This paper explores the use of ventilation network models to automatically analyse and calculate potential emergency escape routes. A variation of Dijkstra’s algorithm is used to predict complex pathways between any two points across a model, representing an escape route from an emergency area (such as a fire) to a safe location (such as the surface or a refuge station). Weighting can be assigned to paths to represent potential travel speed, obstructions or preferred routes. Finally, emergency considerations such as smoke or gas in some parts of the mine can then be incorporated into the pathways to force the algorithm to avoid dangerous routes and specify safer pathways. A trial embankment was constructed using coarse coal mine reject on a deposit of crusted coal mine tailings at New Hope Colliery, located in the Bundamba District of the West Moreton Coalfields in South East Queensland, Australia. The purpose of the trial embankment was to assess the load carrying capacity and settlement behaviour of the crusted tailings, including an assessment of strength gain in the tailings under the influence of the fill. Prior to construction of the trial embankment, a site investigation of the tailings deposit was carried out. This comprised vane shear strength testing, together with disturbed sampling and undisturbed block sampling for the purposes of laboratory testing. Following the site investigation, settlement plates and standpipes were installed at various depths and locations within the tailings in the vicinity of the proposed embankment. The instrumentation enabled the magnitudes and distributions of settlement and pore pressure within the tailings to be determined during and following construction of the embankment. The embankment was constructed using coarse reject in three equal lifts to a height of 3.0 m. The tailings sustained a maximum settlement under the weight of the fill of 290 mm, representing about 4.2 ii of the average initial thickness of the tailings and a loss of embankment height of about 9.7 %. Perhaps no aspect of the investigation of an ore-deposit is of greater importance to the mining geologist and engineer than a consideration of its geological structure. A thorough understanding of the type, size, shape, and arrangement of any ore-body is essential to the proper conduct of exploratory, developmental, and mining, operations. Significant as these remarks are' in relationship to ore-deposits in general, they become of paramount moment when a complex structure such as the Broken Hill Lode is in question. In this connection the use of the term "lode" as applied to the Broken Hill ore-bodies may terid to confusion of ideas among those not familiar with the field or with the literature pertaining thereto, by reason of the fact that it is generally understood that a "lode" is characterised by simple, tabular form, regular outline, defined walls, and persistent attitude. During early 2004, Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) began an aggressive exploration and drilling program in the Chichester Range, targeting iron enrichment developed in the Nammuldi Member at the base of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation. The timely recognition by FMG of distinct zones of (hypogene) microplaty hematite (mplH) enrichment overprinted by extensive supergene mineralisation led to an early reappraisal of the geological history of the area and characterisation of the possible structural and stratigraphic controls on mineralisation. Regionally, the Chichester Range dips gently at less than 5¦ to the south, however, detailed mapping shows that this regional limb is overprinted by low amplitude, long wavelength, north/south to northeast/southwest trending folds. The locations of major structures in the Marra Mamba Iron Formation, combined with spectral analysis of known mineralisation, allowed extrapolation and prioritisation of exploration target areas. The delineation under cover and understanding of these structures was enhanced by detailed airborne magnetic data. Recognition that supergene mineralisation was associated with a palaeotopography that continued significantly under cover to the south under sediments of the Fortescue River valley led to the discovery of extensive supergene mineralisation together with additional mplH mineralisation. A model for the landscape evolution and preservation of enriched Nammuldi Member was generated in order to help communicate both the complexities involved with targeting drill holes beneath cover and the potential limits to the lateral extents of mineralisation.

The Favona adularia-sericite epithermal Au-Ag deposit is located at the southern end of the Hauraki Goldfield, about one kilometre southeast of the world-class Martha deposit. The deposit occurs in Late Miocene andesitic lava flows and local dacitic tuffs of the Waipupu Formation. In some places, post-mineralisation ash fall and ignimbrite, up to 50 m thick, cover mineralised rocks and andesite. We collected soils samples from 110 sites along eight traverses over Favona, and from three regional lines: two south of Favona, and one north of Favona.   Analyses of soils identify prominent enhanced concentrations of Au, Ag, and Hg, and lower enrichments of Sb and As. At Favona, Au and Ag appear to be highly anomalous in areas over mineralisation with Au concentrations greater than 100 ppb and Ag concentrations greater than 1000 ppb, whereas background concentrations are approximately 5 ppb and 50 ppb respectively. The background concentrations of Hg in soils are approximately 100 - 200 ppb, but in mineralised areas, Hg generally exceeds 200 ppb, and some soils contain greater than 600 ppb. Antimony shows enrichments, although weak, above known veins and As locally shows some enrichment above areas of known mineralisation. Therefore, soil sampling at Favona defines geochemical anomalies that correlate with the position of known mineralisation at depth. Thus, there is strong empirical support for the use of Au, Ag and Hg, and possibly Sb and As geochemistry to identify mineralised trends associated with buried deposits at other epithermal prospects.

Single pellets of mixed lead-zinc concentrate containing up to 20 % lead were roasted in the temperature range of 800-1100¦C. Variables studied included pellet size (from 9-8 to 3-2 mm diameter), gas flowrate past the pellet (from 0.05 to 5 ms t), composition of the atmosphere and the effect of additives such as zinc oxide and silica. After defined periods of time, the pellets were removed from the furnace, quenched and submitted for chemical, XRD, SEM and microprobe analysis. The oxidation of the zinc sulphide followed a shrinking core model. Temperature measurements showed that very high pellet temperatures were experienced at the start of an experiment but after 5-10 minutes these approached a constant temperature. The lead loss from the pellets was then constant with time. Thermodynamics predicted the presence of two bands of lead material in the reacted layer of the pellet. These were found in practice. The lead loss from the pellet occurred from the outer oxysulphate layer via the vaporization of lead oxide polymers. The vapour pressure of PbO, and the loss of lead, was dependent on temperature and bulk gas concentrations of SO2 and 02. At 1100¦C the addition of silica greatly reduced the loss of lead from the pellet. Physical factors such as pellet diameter and gas flowrate past the pellet affected the particle dynamics. These results were found to vary in accordance with the predictions of the Froessling equation.

As part of a project on the application of thiourea leaching to a variety of Australian ores, the systematic variation of pH, redox po- tential, and thiourea concentration were in- vestigated on an oxidized gold ore from the Nevoria mine, WA. Stirred open beaker tests were conducted with a pH-stat and Eh-stat system to automati- cally control pH and redox potential at selected values, while thiourea concentration was main- tained manually. Increasing the acidity of the leach liquor from pH 3.6 to pH 1, increased the gold extrac- tion from 37 per cent to over 90 per cent in S h, but there was only a limited improvement below pH 1.5. Silver extraction and thiourea consumption increased as the acidity was in- creased. Increasing the redox potential from 150 to 200 mV (i.e. potential of Pt electrode vs SCE) increased the initial rate of gold and silver extraction, but the effect on cumulative gold extraction by 5 h was slight. Thiourea consump- tion was greatly increased as the redox poten- tial was increased. An increase in thiourea concentration from 1.2 to 4.8 per cent increased the initial rates of gold and silver extraction, but, as for the change in Eh, the improvement in cumulative ex- traction by 5 h was marginal. Thiourea consump- tion increased with thiourea concentration.

A continued exploration programme has further defined the geology of the Tolukuma vein system, verified the resource indicated by Newmont, and identified potential for additional mineralisation. The resource at Tolukuma Hill, designated as zone C, is a mine recoverable 432,000 t at 18.1 g/t Au & 46 g/t Ag. Mining will be by a combination of open pit and underground at a rate of 100,000 t per annum. Processing will be by SAG mill, gravity circuit and CIL plant. A diatreme breccia, localised at an intersection of structures and a relationship of gold to base metal sulphides, are indicative of a strong porphyry association. Typical epithermal features such as crustiform banded quartz and quartz pseudomorphing platy calcite are also present and locally contain lesser gold mineralisation. Pre-existing dilatant structures have acted as a host to the ore fluids, resulting in the formation of the semi-continuous Tolukuma-Gulbadi veins over a 1100 in strike. A fluid flow model suggests that mineralizing fluids were sourced from a diatreme margin and migrated laterally along dilatant structures. Bonanza gold grades are interpreted to be derived through fluid quenching in the flexure between a hanging wall split, which hosts much of the Tolukuma Hill resource, and the feeder graben structure. Thus, the relationship between the pre-mineral structural geometry and fluid upflow at the margins of a diatreme breccia, controls the ore setting.

Silver deposits, in which silver forms at least fifty percent of the value of the ore, are abundant and large on the east side of the Pacific and are absent in the western Pacific. To determine if this uneven distribution is related to features of consuming plate tectonic boundaries which dominate the metallogeny of the Pacific Rim, the variation of Ag/Au in porphyry copper deposits was used to estimate the relative silver content of magma generated in subduction zones. Porphyry copper provinces with high Ag/Au occur in regions of the eastern Pacific where silver deposits are abundant, suggesting that the distribution of silver deposits is controlled by the relative abun- dance of silver in subducted ocean crust. Ocean crust being subducted in the eastern Pacific is mostly less than 50 million years old in contrast to most ocean crust in the western Pacific which is much older. Enrich- ment of silver in young ocean crust at spread- ing centers may reflect metallogenetic evolution over geologic time. Silver may be transported to the surface in volcanic rocks, and deposits are common where felsic varieties are abundant. The high ,solubility of silver in natural waters provides a natural storage mechanism for silver weath- ered from these rocks and ultimately circulated in near-surface hydrothermal systems where many silver deposits form. The regional distribution of silver deposits is not influenced by discoverability, vertical metal zoning, or regional tectonic style. The effect of igneous differentiation is unclear.

Minor iron formation related base metal sulphide mineralization occurs in granulite facies metamorphic rocks of the early Proterozoic Willyama Complex. Rock sequences hosting three iron formation related Cu, Zn, Pb prospects from the Thackaringa Group (Suite 3) are described. A caparison of host rock sequences, style of mineralization and facies of iron formations suggests major differences in terms of the overall depositional environment. However, significant similarities are present with respect to the nature and distribution of iron formation facies and the occurrence of chlorite 'alteration' zones in close proximity to mineralization in all cases. The chlorite within these zones occurs in a number of diverse forms in a range of rock types. A comparison of the prospects shows that there is no evidence to indicate that the chlorite in the zones is a retrograde alteration product of former higher grade prograde mineralogies - the chlorite appears to have survived granulite facies metamorphism. The mode of occurence of the chlorite in the 'alteration' zones together with the fact that the association quartz + chlorite + magnetite + pyrite + base metals is cx rmn to all areas suggests that the chlorite is specifically related to the processes which deposited the stratiform iron formations and related sulphides. It is considered that the chlorite precursor was a prenetanorphic alteration product or chemical sediment closely related to submarine hot spring activity which was also the source for chemical sediment precursors of the iron formations, associated lode rocks and Sulphides.

A lead-zinc-pyrite flotation middling was pressure oxidised to give residues containing iron hydroxy sulphates (a mixture of basic iron sulphate (BIS) and a hydrated iron sulphate (HIS)) and lead sulphate. Direct thiourea leaching of this residue gave over 90 per cent extraction of gold and silver, but thiourea consumption was high (56 kg/t) because of soluble iron(M) in the residue. Attempts were made to decrease the thiourea consumption by removing the water-soluble iron(M) or reducing it to iron(II). Water washing of the pressure oxidation residue removed most of the hydrated iron sulphate but little of the basic iron sulphate. Iron removal was only 12-20 per cent, depending on the number of washes, from one sample which was low in HIS, and 40-45 per cent in another which was high in HIS. Iron extraction was not appreciably increased by using dilute sulphuric acid (with or without additions of sodium sulphite), dilute phosphoric acid, or sodium chloride solution (150 g/L NaCI). Direct thiourea leaching of the water-washed residue gave over 90 per cent extraction of gold but only 49 per cent of silver, with a thiourea consumption of 27 kg/t. However, the application of a water wash followed by reduction of dissolved iron(III) with sodium sulphite in the presence of thiourea, and then thiourea leaching resulted in over 98 per cent extraction of gold and silver for a thiourea consumption of 26 kg/t.

The U. S. Department of Interior's Bureau of Mines, in conjunction with a cooperator in the U. S. A., are developing a new highwall mining system (HMS) for coal extraction in unreclaimed and active contour strip mines. This prototype system is comprised of a computer-based remote control (CBRC) system to monitor and remotely control a thin-seam continuous miner (TSCM) and a 76*m long multiple-unit continuous haulage (MUCH) conveying system, plus other manually- operated support equipment located on the highwall bench. The TSCM and MUCH coal haulage system are both controlled remotely by a single operator in a protective enclosure at an ergonomically- designed workstation located on the highwall bench. Two other personnel work on the bench to operate other support equipment. Full-scale mock-up fabrications were employed in the design of the unique remote control operator workstation. The HMS should allow the safe and economical exploitation of increased coal reserves where they outcrop in hilly regions of the United States. It should also be competitive with conventional auger mining and other coal extraction techniques, with a productivity goal at a highwall site of 20 tonne/man-h. Extensive simulated surface tests of the miner and haulage system should be completed in early 1988 at Bureau test facilities at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. These will be followed by actual coal production trials of the entire system in 1988 at a highwall site in West Virginia/USA.

Stresses around mine openings at depth can cause the surrounding rock to fail, releasing stored strain energy. When this happens, the rock may literally explode or `burst' into the opening without warning. As mining progresses deeper into the earth, the possibility of seismic events and rock bursts increases. Researchers at the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) are currently studying seismic activity in three underground hard-rock mines in the United States: the Homestake Mine, Lead, SD; the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID; and the Sunshine Mine, Kellogg, ID. Waveforms from seismic events are recorded by personal-computer-based hardware and software. This information is archived and transferred from the mine sites to the USBM via modem communication links. Then, using USBM-developed software, the events are analysed to determine various parameters, including magnitude, frequency, and location. In addition, researchers are modelling the deep levels of the Homestake Mine using a finite-element code. These models generate stress and displacement values for a given loading condition. By studying material properties, in situ stresses, and seismic activity along with actual scope sequencing, researchers can make correlations between stresses induced by mining and the frequency and magnitude of seismic events. Information on seismic events coupled with results from finite-element analyses have increased understanding of rock mass behavior and the mechanisms that may lead to rock bursts. Optimisation of slope sequencing designs as a result of these studies could reduce rock burst hazards.

The Fairbanks Mining District in central Alaska was discovered in 1902 and since then approximately 7.5 million troy oz of placer gold, 250,000 troy oz of lode gold, and several thousand short tons of antimony and tungsten hap been produced from an area of about 1000 km . Historic lode production was from high grade gold-quartz veins that averaged 1.3 OPT free milling gold. Five main types of mineral deposits' are recognized in the district. I. Conformable, stratabound volcanogenic zinc, antimony, lead, and copper sulfides in places containing gold, silver and tungsten in bimodal metavoleanics (Cleary Sequence). II. Complex precious metal-bearing lead sulfosalt-quartz veins in Cretaceous granitic intrusives. III. Tungsten skarns adjacent to granitic intrusives. IV. Gold-bearing polymetallic sulfide-quartz veins crosscutting metavolcanics and metasedimentary units of the Cleary Sequence. V. Antimony-bearing gash veins along axial plane shears in various lithologies of the Cleary Sequence. Type I and Type IV mineral occurrences are currently being evaluated as low. grade bulk tonnage (target model 16-20 'million tons of 0.05 to 0.15 OPT)'and high grade moderate tonnage (target model 0.5 to 2.5 million tons of 0.5 OPT) gold deposits. The host rocks for Type I mineralization occur over a 30 km strike length and are at least 300 meters thick. Stratigraphic, structural, fluid inclusion, and isotopic data suggest that the Type IV mineralization is related to remobilization of Type I

The use of dolomite as a refractory began in England about 1870 when the basic Bessemer process for the removal of phosphorus from steel was developed by Thomas and Gilchrist.Knowledge of dolomite as a refractory in this country goes back to the early part of this century, at the time when the Hoskins Brothers took over the Lithgow Iron and Steel Works from W. Sandford. The practice then was toimport burned dolomite in casks from England. It is reported that much of the material was powdered when received, but was still serviceable. The earliest. used sources of local stone were in the Bathurst and Mudgee areas of New South Wales, and these dolomites were first used raw. Later, dolomite was burned in cupolas at Havilah near Mudgee, coke being obtained from the South Coast of New South Wales. This plant supplied burned dolomite to the Lithgow steel plant, later to the Australil1n Iron and Steel plant at Port Kembla, and also to the electric steel furnaces at Newcastle, Sydney and Melbourne until the plant was closed down in 1946.The Broken Hill Proprietary Company first obtained its dolomite from George's Plains near Bathurst (this was, really a magnesium limestone) and later from Mount Knowles, a deposit near Mudgee, which was eventually taken over by the CO:plpany in 1918. Although cone classifiers have received little attention in the modelling of mineral processing units they are one of the oldest non-mechanical classifiers. Their use has enjoyed a revival in recent years because of their low cost of installation and operation. In this paper the development of models for cone classifiers is reviewed and a new model is proposed. The experimental work, data collection and analysis are briefly described, and the new model is presented and discussed. The data used in the model development are made up from three distinct experiments using different units in each case. There are 21 data sets from a 3 m cone treating the tailings in a copper concentrator, 24 data sets from a 0.3 m pilot-scale cone, and 29 data sets from a laboratory glass funnel (0.(Y73 m diameter) used as a cone classifier, giving a total of 74 data sets. The model structure was developed from an analysis of particle settling in classifiers, using specialised model building software. The size of a particle settling in a separator and the forced flow through the apex of the cone were related via hydrodynamic dimensionless groups to the operating conditions of the unit. The model predicts the separation efficiency using the following four parameters: efficiency curve shape factor, cut-point, underflow density (per cent solids) or underflow pulp velocity. The model covers a range of feed flowrates from 1.2 to 5000 1/min.
