Methods of calculation of the reliability of process computers are getting more and more important. The paper presents long period observations of 21 process computers with online applications in the iron and steel industry. About 5000 failure events during 10 years have been systematically recorded and evaluated. On the basis of these long time observations it is possible to develop a probability model of the failure behaviour of process computers.This failure model is constructed with four different states of the process computer:Working phase, working phase with undetected reasons, repair phase, failure phase resulting from external influences.The model is defined by differential equations for the probability of one of these four phases. Long time observations show, that all of these four phases are closely correlated with the capa-city of a process computer, restarting without detection of failure reason, changes of programs and software, costs and time of repair. So the result of this analysis is a model of failure for process computers, which allows to predict breakdowns of process computers on the basis of external parameters.

The main problem of geostatistical simulations is to reproduce the real characteristics of the mineral deposit when there are few conditioning data. In this case, the geological interpretation, based on structures, geophysics and geological maps, plays the major role in terms of resource evaluation.The paper investigates the use of principal component analysis (PCA) to help classify multiple geostatistical categorical simulations considering the similarity among them and the interpreted model, herein referred as training image (TI).An iron deposit with four lithological facies, in a specific horizontal plane, was used as case study for two-dimensional (2D) simulations. Sequential indicator simulations (SIS) was used to obtain ten equally probable 2D images, which were generated and compared against the interpreted model (TI).In this study, 11 random variables are comprised by the vector of ten SIS realisations plus the training image (TI). The similarity between the TI and each SIS realisation is measured using the angle between the TI and SIS vectors projected in the new coordinate systems (PCA factors). It is possible to order the SIS realisations from the highest to the lowest PCA factor taking into account the TI similarity.The visual analysis of the images shows coherence in the PCA results as a method to measure similarity. This methodology can be used as a post-processing tool to rank simulation results and to select the ones which better represent the prior known geology or to compare the quality of different methods of simulation.

The main outcomes of mining grade control include defining the boundary between ore and waste and then categorising the ore according to which stockpile it should be sent. A typical workflow includes using general mine planning software (GMP) – such as SurpacTM, VulcanTM or CAE StudioTM – to create three-dimensional wireframes of mineralisation domains, which are used to flag the relevant samples of interest and constrain estimation during block modelling. Creating the wireframes is a time-consuming process, requiring reasonable software skills, patience and an eye for detail. The interpretations can be subjective; indeed, even the same geologist will give different shapes if presented with the same data at different times. The process can become particularly tedious when trying to carry out updates due to new data. It can also be difficult to test the effect of alternative interpretations or grade thresholds because of the time constraints in production.There are now several implicit modelling tools available, either as standalone programs or as add-on modules to existing GMP. In this paper, the authors develop a workflow using implicit modelling methods to show how grades and geology can be rapidly interpreted to provide effective domains for grade estimation. The paper includes case studies from open pit gold mines. In recent years, Chinese companies have invested billions in Australian mineral exploration, development and processing. In 2008 - 2009 alone, the Foreign Investment Review Board approved $26.4 B of investment. Much of this investment has been by merger and acquisition (M&A) of Australian resources companies. This paper sets out to investigate how Australian CEOs perceive the cultural and institutional challenges in operating Australia mining companies recently acquired by Chinese interests. HofstedeÆs cultural dimensions and institutional theory from management science were used to develop a structured questionnaire, which was subsequently used to conduct telephone interview of the CEOs of six recently acquired mining companies. Analysis of the survey results indicated that, in all cases, few changes were made to the operational management of the Australian companies post-M&A. The three major benefits for Australian companies as a result of the M&A are the ability to; access long-term debt at lower cost; secure finance for growth plans in financially volatile times; and maintain existing management structures. Some perceived negatives involved longer and more convoluted decision-making as a result of Chinese state approval required for investment decisions. The study identified building æGuanxiÆ and an aversion to losing æfaceÆ as important cultural learnings for Australian CEOs. Economically efficient mining processes can be significantly assisted by the implementation of sensor technologies for the detection of materials and boundary layers between materials inside the stratum. These sensors are meant to facilitate the machinery operator and illustrate furthermore the prerequisites in assisting tools towards fully automated mining equipment. Therefore, project æSensory Identification of Material Type and Detection of the InterfacesÆ (SIMT) aims at the integration of ground penetrating radar (GPR) and geoelectric sensor technology by endowing with them a bucket of a bucket wheel excavator. For this reason, a sensor bucket was developed and tested in the Inden Mine of RWE Power AG. The feasibility of integration and deployment of such sensor technology has been proven effective for the conditions of open cast mining. The main focus of current research lies on developing algorithms to analyse the acquired measurement data from the sensors to automatically detect layers and materials. A computer network receives the GPR and geoelectric measurement data as well as the positioning data of the sensor bucket. The positioning data mainly consists of GPS and encoder information, which is merged with the sensor data by using the UTC time stamp. With the aid of consecutive processes the relevant information will be extracted and provided to the user. The aim of SIMT is to replace material identification, traditionally carried out by the operator, by implementing a continuous operating interpretation system in mining equipment based on GPR and geoelectric sensor technology, resulting in more detailed information regarding the working face during an excavation. This detailed information provides an opportunity for efficient planning and controlling of selective mining of natural deposits, such as the process of lignite mining.

Farming on bauxite residue using screw propelled equipment (SPE) has been commonly practised to accelerate dewatering and as it promotes consolidation and enhances storage capacity. However, it is unclear when and how often farming should be conducted during the transition of bauxite residue from slurry to dry solids and how deep each slurry deposition should be. To address this issue, three desiccation tanks were established in the laboratory to investigate how much farming could enhance the desiccation and consolidation of tailings. The cuboid tanks, of 350 mm in height and 300 mm in width and length and with an opening on the top, were placed on load cells to monitor the water loss during desiccation and were instrumented with moisture and suction sensors designed and developed at the University of Queensland to measure the water content profile of the residue. The bauxite residue, composed of silt-size particles with low plasticity, was hydraulically deposited in the tanks as a slurry at 27% solid content, resulting in 100 mm depth of solid material settling. Evaporation was enhanced by placing two identical electrical fans above the tanks. Two phases were conducted. In the first phase, the two tanks were left untouched for evaluating non farmed conditions and for calibrating sensors, while in the second phase, three tanks were subjected to atemporal farming using purpose-built screw propelled equipment. The experiment was terminated when the residue was completely desiccated. This paper reports on the instrumented tank set-up and the results obtained to date.

The requirement for secondary egress from underground workings has long been regulated in Australia. Escape way systems have evolved from simple airleg rising ladders and timber ladders to steel galvanised ladders and more recently fully enclosed polyethylene ladders.The polyethylene ladder, Safescape Laddertube, was introduced to the underground mining industry in 2010. It is an enclosed cylindrical modular plastic ladder designed for use in underground escape ways and access ways. Since its first installation in May 2010, the Laddertube has been installed in 43 mines across four countries, totalling 8800 m of ladders installed to December 2013.The Cracow Gold mine is one operation using Laddertube, located 500 km north-west of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Upon discovering and developing both the Empire and Roses Pride orebodies, a safe and economically viable secondary egress system and surface primary ventilation exhaust shafts were necessary to support development and production activities to these workings. The need arose to merge these two critical requirements together between surface and underground mine workings some 200 m and 400 m respectively for each orebody. Neither egress has intermediate access points within their full service length from top to bottom. Several options were considered, the preferable and most feasible method adopted was Laddertube.The longest egress length requiring Laddertube within the two vertical surface exhaust shafts was 400 m long, within a 3.5 m diameter shaft. Due to the length of the vertical Laddertube system in both egresses, personnel are to be assisted by mechanical means using the Extended Ladder Climb Assist system.The Gossan Hill mine also uses Laddertube for their escape ways. Part of the Golden Grove operation, Gossan Hill is an underground sublevel open stoping mine located in the mid-west of Western Australia.With a considerable mine life remaining and a history of acidic water and stress related deterioration in vertical openings, the mine operators sought an escape way solution that would provide for the long-term needs of Gossan Hill. Laddertube was selected due to its non-corrosive properties and the ability to fill in around the ladder way to provide stability to the raise opening.Laddertube is a recent development in escape way systems, and is effectively being applied in a variety of operations, meeting the specific needs of underground mines.CITATION:Durkin, S, Hawkins, B and Lawrence, V, 2014. The interest of industry, in particular future mining, is pointing towards the use of novel visualisation systems to improve the operational efficiency of user interfaces. While the technologies used to enhance operators’ experience are advancing, the implementation of novel visualisation paradigms within mining operations is trailing behind other industries, particularly health and aviation. In this work, we present a number of initiatives and use cases of immersive virtual and augmented reality systems that can fit within the mining context. These ideas represent a step towards new platforms that might increase the efficiency and safety of mining operations through applications such as 3D panoramic video monitoring technology with annotated information coming from big data analytics and visual analytics processing engines. However, while the technologies are used in a variety of training settings, their application in the working environment is lagging behind. This paper presents examples of scientific visualisations that could be applied in a mining context to extend the possibilities of operators’ cognitive abilities and working efficiency. Fatigue is the primary cause of failure of structural and mechanical components subject to dynamic loading. Recognition of this basic fact and the development of appropriate techniques and details are important in the design and repair of off highway trucks (OHTs). The frames and appendages of OHTs and other mobile plant used in the Pilbara are subject to tough operating conditions. Any fatigue-prone details quickly show up and become a maintenance liability of considerable concern. Much of this equipment is approaching the limit of its fatigue life and maintenance managers face decisions on whether to repair or replace. Even new equipment often contains some poor details which suffer distress soon after commissioning. In those cases a repair is required which will reinstate the detail to its original intended design life. Repair details must be practical and cost effective. They must also be tailored to the capability and expertise available in the field or in local manufacturers' establishments. This is particularly important where original equipment was manufactured overseas and long delivery times are involved. Lessons are drawn from components which have failed, using the evidence constructively, to provide an upgraded part or an improved substitute. With the experience now available it is relatively easy to extrapolate to cover new problem areas. This paper describes specialised techniques of mechanical fastening and detailing for low fatigue susceptibility, built up over many years of experience with OHTs and other mining plant and equipment in the Pilbara.

Admixture use in cement products is commonplace in the construction and mining industries. Many Australian mines have an operational concrete batch plant and stock hydration control and water reducing admixtures. The benefits of admixture use, especially in shotcrete is understood and well documented. Cemented rock fill (CRF) is used to fill stope voids and create stable vertical and undercut surfaces at some Australian mines. These mines generally mix rock fill with a slurry of cement and water without the use of admixtures. Recently published work on optimisation of CRF mixes has mainly focused on the strength increases associated with changes to the mix grading proportions by the addition of fines, but not focusing on the potential benefits of admixture use. Admixture use in CRF may be the simplest CRF optimisation method, as the admixtures will often be added by the push of a button at the batch plant. A CRF testing program was undertaken to test the benefits of admixture use in terms of strength gain, using hydration control additives (HCA) and high range water reducer (HRWR) admixtures. Rock fill gradings were strictly controlled in the test process to allow clear definition of the difference admixtures provide in compression at 28 days. The testing results define admixture associated strength gains in a 6 per cent general purpose (GP) cement by dry weight CRF mix (131 kg of cement/m3). Costings have been developed to allow a mine operator to understand the cost benefits of admixture use in CRF due to reduced operating costs. Operational efficiency advances and a suggested admixture implementation plan for CRF optimisation is offered.

Slurry density measurement, specially in cyclone feed streams, is fundamental to grinding circuit control. With the purpose of increasing the availability of such a measurement, the design of a soft-sensor in an actual grinding plant is addressed in this paper. The system is designed to substitute the momentary unavailability of the real density sensor, either because it has failed or because it has been removed for any other reason. The ARMAX model structure is determined using the stepwise regression method. Starting with a list of the candidate variables, the method selects, one by one, and in a systematic manner the variables which best model the measurement to be replaced, choosing them from the set of presumably correlated candidate variables. In this paper not only the single measurements are included in the list of candidates, but also combinations of such measurements having physical significance. A phenomenological model has been built with the purpose of determining these combinations. It turned out that in most of the cases the components of combined measurements having physical significance were selected by the stepwise regression method, instead of the single measurements. Actual grinding plant data is used to determine the model structure, to estimate the model parameters and to test the predictive capability of the developed soft-sensors. Good results are shown to be obtained during periods of up to 30 hours of the density soft-sensor operation.

The Henty Gold Mine is a good example of a situation where conditional simulation and optimisation techniques may have useful impact on modelling of mineralisation distribution and ore definition. Much of the gold mineralisation at Henty is concentrated within an alteration zone which is both physically discontinuous and forms only a small fraction of the overall mineralised volume. The alteration units are mappable from diamond drill core and underground workings. Conditional simulation and optimisation techniques for ore definition have found considerable success in the open pit gold mining environment. For many reasons including computational efficiency, lack of consistent geological information, and lack of familiarity with ideas and methods among mine geologists, implementations of these methods in open pit mining have been comparatively simplistic. Modelling is commonly reduced to treating the sample data as a single geologic population. This paper discusses the application of the MP method (a particular implementation of conditional simulation and optimisation) to modelling the distribution of potential ore blocks in the Henty gold mineralisation. The approach allows the mine geologist to model both the spatial geometry of the alteration types and the gold grades associated with each alteration type in a single process. Options allow the geologist to include or exclude underground geological mapping and face sampling depending mainly on the abundance of drill hole sampling and the quality of the face sampling. An optimisation algorithm based on maximisation of profit from mining is used to assist in ore definition.

Northparkes is located 27 km north of the township of Parkes in central New South Wales, Australia. The operations consist of underground block cave mines and an ore processing plant that produces high-grade copper and gold concentrate. Production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and open cut stockpiles. Mining commenced at Northparkes in 1994 as an open cut operation. Underground block cave mining began in 1997. Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use the highly efficient block cave mining method, which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment the ore.The occurrence of air blasts is one of the principal mining hazards in block caving operations between the time of first undercutting and breakthrough of the cave to surface. As such, it needs to be managed continuously, and risk assessments need to be reviewed on a regular basis for applicability to changing conditions. Unfortunately, there is little literature on how to practically approach air blast risk assessments in a way that can be incorporated in the day-to-day operation of a mine. Previous methods of assessing air blast risk were tedious and results were often unrepeatable.With the extension of the E48 Lift 1 extraction level, it was necessary to assess the air blast risk for the extension drives and develop operational guidelines for production from the extension. A review of the methodology for assessing air blast risks revealed substantial improvement opportunities.This paper outlines the principles used for air blast risk assessments at Northparkes Mines and the methodology employed to achieve efficient, repeatable and auditable results.CITATION:Vejrazka, C, 2016. This paper reviews recent advances in geophysical tools for mineral exploration. It does not restrict comments to methods which are usually applied in the tectonically active belt surrounding the Pacific Ocean, where geophysics has often been secondary to geological prospecting (eg visual recognition of surface alteration) and drainage geochemistry; but considers geophysical tools applied to a broader range of both deposits and terrains. For example, the subdued topography of much of Australia and Canada has lent itself to the development and extensive application of airborne methods. In Australia, deep weathering and transported cover have necessitated the use of geophysical methods to not only detect anomalies but also to map and understand basement geology. This same weathering has caused specific problems, particularly for electrical methods, but recent improvements in instrumentation, processing and visualisation have largely overcome them. A great deal of geophysical data is now being collected by government agencies, often from the air, and made readily available to explorers. In several Australian states it is free, often on line, and in almost all cases it is relatively cheap. These regional data sets are often augmented by more detailed local surveys in areas of interest. Although æanomaliesÆ are still important much more is being done with the high quality data which is now available The results are used for geological mapping, to test geological hypotheses, to construct detailed 3D geological models and, together with fluid flow modeling, to predict optimum locations for mineralisation.

Brisbane’s Airport Link is Australia’s largest road infrastructure project, worth a total value of A$4.8 billion. The project is using surface and underground blasting to excavate hard volcanic rock, Brisbane Tuff. This paper tells the story of the most challenging and difficult blast of the whole project: the removal of a remnant pillar of rock (approximately 2250 m3) next to a major arterial road and within 100 m of existing infrastructure including a number of heritage listed buildings, residences and privately owned sensitive receivers. The pillar consisted of a hard rock wall (Brisbane Tuff) between 2 m and 6 m thick, 15 m high and 35 m wide; with in situ precast concrete piles embedded within 1 m of the boundary of the pillar. Orica Australia Pty Limited was contracted by Thiess John Holland, to perform the work in this area, including design, modelling, drilling and loading of the explosives, as well as blast clearance and shotfiring. Access to the area was limited so all explosives and equipment, including the 20 t drill rig, had to be lifted in and out by crane. Due to the nature of the blast, with infrastructure 5 m directly in front of the 15 m high face, there was only ever going to be one chance to get this blast right. This was an extremely complex blast which required the use of a number of different types of packaged explosives, as well as special timing techniques only made possible by using electronic initiating systems. This type of blast is high risk, and is more typical of a building demolition in the urban environment. The blast was fired on the 25 September 2010, and was highly successful. The environmental results for vibration and overpressure were well under the imposed limits, and the embedded concrete piles remained undamaged.

Mineral ownership determination is not always straight forward as in many cases the relevant details are not recorded on the latest Land Transfer title held in the local Land Registry Office. To determine mineral ownership can be difficult, time consuming and expensive especially in a confused sector. Non statute minerals can be owned by the Crown, Land Owner or other persons. Statute minerals (Gold, Silver, Petroleum, Uranium) are always owned by the Crown and thus present no problems. In simple terms the only accurate and reliable method of determining the mineral ownership under subject land is to historically search back to the first registration when the land and minerals were definitely intact. Then carefully ascertain from the evidence gathered along the way to the present day whether any legislation or private agreement altered or affected the status quo.

"X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is the most common technique used for online slurry assaying in base metal flotation applications. Typically, assays from feed, concentrate and tailings slurries are used to monitor and control the flotation circuit, with possible additional sampling locations in other main slurry flows inside the circuit. The elemental content detection from the XRF spectrum is relatively straightforward as the spectrum contains element-specific peaks whose height corresponds to the element concentration in the sample. However, centralised XRF analysers measure the elemental concentrations line-by-line, which may increase the sampling interval for an individual line and cause unnecessary response delays, especially in large flotation plants. Reflectance spectroscopy is an emerging technique that can be used to obtain more frequent measurements from slurries. The measurement is based on the mineral-specific absorbance of light in the visible and near-infrared (VNIR) wavelength range. Due to this relatively inexpensive and simple measurement system, it is possible to conduct the measurement simultaneously in several slurry lines. However, the information contained in the VNIR spectra is more difficult to interpret as concentrations of all the minerals in the sample contribute to the measured spectrum and changes in solids content, particle size and mineralogy disturb the elemental content estimation. Therefore, frequent calibration of the measurement is required. This study presents the application of combined reflectance spectrum and XRF measurements for rapid online slurry assaying in a copper-nickel flotation plant. The XRF assays are utilised as calibration samples for the reflectance spectrum measurement, keeping the calibration model up-to-date. The Silver Swan nickel mine is located at the Black Swan Nickel Project, 53 kin north east of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. The Silver Swan orebody is a massive sulphide nickel deposit dipping 70¦ east with an average in situ grade of 14 per cent. Mining of the massive orebody is by Mechanised Ramp Cut and Fill (MRCF). A mining recovery of 98 per cent and minimising dilution are primary goals in extracting the high-grade ore. Placing a distinguishable marker bed (working platform) on rock fill was identified as a key method to achieving these goals. Gravel from a pit located onsite was considered the most suitable material for the marker beds. Research undertaken to design the marker beds using the gravel revealed conventional methods used in mining would not suffice, but that road stabilisation methods could be a viable alternative. Trials used a road recycler to mix cement and gravel in situ and several test beds were constructed on the surface to determine the final design. The trials attempted to replicate a marker bed's life cycle of construction and placement and mucking of ore from the marker bed.

Australia as a leading producer of mineral sands has also occupied a leading position in many areas of research'in the processing and applications of these minerals. Research in upgrading ilmenite to produce synthetic rutile has resulted in the develop- ment of many processes, e.g,., Becher, Murso, Chlorine Technology, and ICI processes. Studies on the reducibility of ilmenites, aqueous leaching of reduced ilmenites, Fe-Ti-O system, leachability of natural and treated ilmenites in hydrochloric acid and selective chlorination of iron from ilmenites have been carried out in order to develop and improve the efficiency of the above processes. While research on the processing of zircon sand to produce high purity (99.99% ZrO2 zirconia powder and zirconium chemicals started only recently, research by CSIRO in the early 1970s led to the discovery of the phenomenon of transformation toughening in partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ) ceramics. Australia, with very significant resources of lanthanide-containing ores, pro- duces substantial quantities of monazite each year but research in processing and appli- cations of rare earths was neglected in recent years in this country. However, research to improve processes for the recovery of rare earths is now under way and studies on the production and testing of Nd-B-Fe magnets which are 1.5-2 times stronger than the strongest magnets (Sm-Co) currently available, have also commenced.' An overview of the research in the pro- cessing and applications of mineral sands during the last two decades in Australia and its implications for the industry are pre- sented in the paper.
