As the global population increases and more countries demand a higher standard of living, the world must provide more food and greater energy and mineral resources to sustain this growth. The difficulty of doing this is compounded by three broad trends: the conversion of agricultural land to development uses; the increasing urbanisation of the world's population; and growing concern for the maintenance and improvement of the environment, especially regarding global warming and the impact of population growth. Underground space utilisation offers opportunities for helping address these trends.

AXTAT is a computerised system developed by the Western Australian Department of Minerals and Energy in conjunction with the local mining industry for recording and retrieving information about fatalities and work related injuries. Since its inception, the system has gained considerable recognition by consistently demonstrating its usefulness as a tool, not only to the Department, but for the entire industry nationwide. AXTAT has played an important role in the continuous improvement process in management of occupational health and safety in the Western Australian mining industry with gains in both human and financial terms, by regularly providing timely and accurate statistical feedback on fatalities and lost time injuries to industry.

The Department of Mines Tasmania employs a Drilling Section for specialised drilling re- quired by government and semi-government bodies. The section has a complement of nine crews oper- ating auger, cable tool, rotary and diamond drilling plants. For some years the Department has been involved in site investigation drilling of the Derwent River. The experience gained indicated that drilling methods should be altered. In 1976 an urgent programme was requested and the opportunity was taken to solve many problems associated with previous investigations. Equipment and methods are discussed in detail. The improved technique contributed to the suc- cessful completion of the Phase 1 site investi- Gation.

The Gold Fields Cerro Corona copper-gold deposit in Peru has heterogeneous rock characteristics in terms of its mineralogical, geological and geotechnical properties. Blast design variations in these conditions directly impact the run-of-mine (ROM) fragmentation, which in turn influences downstream process efficiencies. In particular, when harder ore is processed, throughput and circuit performance may be limited.To evaluate the potential to increase throughput and improve overall plant performance by optimising blasting practices and comminution circuit operation, Gold Fields La Cima engaged Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) to conduct a full process integration and optimisation project at Cerro Corona. Blasting, crushing and grinding processes were reviewed to identify the potential to achieve substantial improvements in productivity when treating the most competent ore types.Site-specific models of the blasting, crushing and milling processes were developed using SmartTagTM ore tracking technology for calibration and validation. Ore tracking permitted locations in the blast volume to be queried against the geotechnical block model to determine the hardness and structural parameters of the feed to the comminution circuit. They also ensured surveys were conducted when ore from the audit blast was flowing through the crushing and grinding circuits.The predictive models developed enabled PTI to demonstrate how changes in blast design influenced both ROM fragmentation and the performance of downstream comminution processes. Outcomes of the project suggested changes to blast designs and comminution practices, and these were partially implemented for a validation trial. The trial demonstrated a 14.8 per cent increase in mill throughput for the specific ore selected for the study, and an average increase of 5.7 per cent for all ore types. There is potential to further increase throughput and process performance if all recommendations are implemented. Some recent and current research and development projects relating to strip type open cut coal mining are reviewed. The projects include a dragline-hopper-truck mining system, an overburden slusher system, improvement of dragline operations, continuous excavation and conveying of overburden materials, and a steep angle coal conveying system. Most of these projects offer prospects for reducing costs in deep strip mining operations, but only the overburden slusher project has the potential for large cost reductions. A project on highwall mining of coal has demonstrated that this coal mining system is viable and capable of achieving high productivity rates. Production highwall mining operations are now starting to become established in Australia.

This paper summarises the process taken to simplify 35 ground support standards accounting for the multiple development profiles, dynamic geotechnical environment and the practical safety implications of a large-scale change in the ground control standards. This reduction was required after an incident involving incorrect standards being issued. The subsequent investigation identified that: • Selection of ground support standard for a mining instruction (MI) is not straightforward due to multiple standards, standards not reflecting current reinforcement used and complex geotechnical environment being encountered. Instead, site-specific ground control instructions were being issued. • Ground support standards were hard to follow and confusing, errors were present and not all standards to scale. • Ground support standards being used did not reflect what was being installed, ie bolt type incorrect and mesh orientation different. • No process or tier action response plan (TARP) for operators to follow for ground control standard noncompliance. • No justification for ground support standards being used in the current geotechnical environment. • No process for ground support standard selection and thereby no paper trail to document and assess adequacy of performance. A project was undertaken to reduce and simplify the ground support standards, produce a justification document to support ground support design and develop a process for site practitioners to identify the type of ground support standard required for the mining instruction. The exercise of rationalising the ground support was met with some challenges, including: • Technical aspects to determine the level of demand and the capacity for each ground support scheme. • Training the geotechnical engineers how to determine the level of risk for each area. • Winning over other technical services staff and the underground mining contractor of the new approach and then implementation. One of the major successes was the acceptance by the underground operators who found the system simplified their work and gave them increased confidence in management of seismicity. The rationalised ground support standards have now been successfully in place for over two years.

Examples are given of the different management approaches used to improve a mine's profitability and the view is put that attention to mine design is very important but easily overlooked. The need for humans to use graphics to ccanprehend and develop strategies to exploit ore deposits is discussed. The use of two and three dimensional representations for geology, mine design and survey data is reviewed. The current use of computers in mining is discussed and reasons for the limited use of ccanputer graphis are proposed. Suggestions are made as to how more extensive use may be made of catputer graphics in mining by using recent and possibly forthcoming advances in computer hardware and by adopting certain software approaches.

Longwalling has reached a high standard both in Germany and Australia and most improvements should be expected in planning, monitoring and control. Double drum shearer have electric drives to 1000 kW and automatic height control is under development. Conveyor pans to 40mm thickness and chains to 2300 kN breaking load are in use with controls for pretension and load compensation under test.Trends in support are towards two leg shields with loads to 3850 kN per leg and electrohydraulic controls. Expert systems have been devised for planning and diagnosis tasks. With increases in technical standards, staff qualification standards at rising too, drawing attention to training requirements for modem personnel.

Flotation has been in use at Broken Hill for nearly 100 years, and the process has gone through many different optimisation studies over that time. This paper reviews the current flotation practice at the Perilya Broken Hill Mine, and details one of the recent optimisation studies conducted using mathematical modelling and simulation tools. The optimisation study consisted of surveys of the lead and zinc circuits, mapping of the floatability components of the ore and developing models of the lead and zinc circuits. The models were then used to conduct simulations to simplify the circuit. The study allowed plant personnel to identify optimum operating conditions for their current flotation cells, as well as possible improvements in circuit configuration and cell capacity.

Managing productivity and improving efficiency for a healthy return on capital employed have become key mining industry strategies under prevailing tough global market conditions. However, achieving this in a multisystem environment such as a mining operation can be daunting. The field of discrete event simulation offers some relief, giving engineering teams insight into multivariable systems and stochastic processes. It allows for integrated system thinking and domain expertise to be woven into project thinking fibre. Directed system optimisation and therefore improved efficiency becomes possible. Furthermore, capital discipline accrues from optimal upgrade investments. This paper illustrates the practical application of this approach by reviewing a typical case study for a direct shipping iron ore operation. Dynamic simulation was used to establish maximum processing plant capacity under varying material characteristics and identify capital-efficient upgrades for increasing production.The study started with descriptive statistical analysis of existing data. Discrete equipment and system capacities were defined, followed by static plant mass balance calculations to establish bottlenecks and overall static capacity. Equipment ‘uptime’ and ‘downtime’ analyses established system and overall plant availability and utilisation. From this information, a dynamic simulation model could then be developed and initially calibrated against actual plant performance to verify its robustness. Once confirmed to accurately represent existing plant dynamics, system capacity response to variable changes could be tested to ultimately determine maximum plant capacity. Additionally, plant optimisation was incorporated to arrive at optimal upgrade points. Maximum capacity and necessary upgrades were established as a function primarily of feed size distribution. Additionally, the interfacing effects of rehandling feed material to the final product grade and potentially to life-of-mine were established as important outcomes. Since early-2001, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) has successfully operated an ultra fine grinding (UFG) circuit to supplement its roaster capacity for the treatment of the refractory gold flotation concentrate. A second UFG mill was installed in 2002 taking the total UFG capacity to over 20 tph while grinding to 11 to 12 microns and achieving over 90 per cent gold recovery. A development program in 2002/3 involving plant trials, pilot plants and laboratory testwork resulted in process improvements and a better understanding of the milling and gold leach processes that assisted in narrowing the gap between UFG and roasting. This paper details the operation of the ultra fine grinding process at KCGM as a non oxidative treatment for the extraction of gold from a refractory ores.

Application of ore pre-treatment technologies such as Grade Engineering and in-pit ore treatment require comprehensive analysis to show proven value is being generated by switching away from the current practices. Considering most mining operations last several decades; the pre-treatment technologies must be investigated over life of mine (LOM) to truly show value was generated or lost. Therefore, a value chain flowsheet model has been usually developed to run those analysis/simulations over LOM using a set of defined ore characteristics and the operating equipment capacities. The Integrated Extraction Simulator (IES) has been used for this type of LOM simulations as it has the necessary flexibility to accommodate the whole mining value chain flowsheet in one platform and provide essential computation power to run mass simulations for the given scenarios using the resource block model. This allows to forecast the value chain response over the LOM for all given scenarios in a feasible amount of time. The traditionally developed flowsheets for the analysis/simulations are usually limited to the mineral processing plant and were developed based on a single audit conducted on the plant in a very short time, e.g. several hours. The process plant is being operated with a certain ore at a certain condition during the short audits which would not reveal the true capacity of the operation equipment when ore characteristics changes. Therefore, it would be impossible to define the true capacity of the equipment and identify the constraints along the value chain. In this study, a methodology was developed to identify the constraints along the value chain and implement those in the IES flowsheet using process information. Also, the equipment models were fine-tuned to represent the true capacity of the equipment in the flowsheet using the same data set. The methodology was tested over five process plant in two operations and showed the performance forecast was significantly improved over the traditional methods being used so far. Then those high-fidelity flowsheets were used to evaluate the ore pre-treatment technologies proposed by the relevant resource company experts.

"Three issues of relevance in a modern tailings storage facility (TSF) are:geotechnical stabilitymanaging acid rock drainage (ARD) from pyritic tailingsmanaging the tailings from cyanidation of gold ores. Drawing on examples from both copper porphyry flotation and sulfide-hosted gold ores, this paper demonstrates that giving some weight and importance to the process tails properties upfront can influence the flow sheet and not only improve tailings management effectiveness but also impact positively on economics. In the case of a typical copper porphyry ore with moderate pyrite content, the rougher tail in a conventional high pH selective flotation step is usually classified as potentially acid generating (PAG). To avoid the generation of ARD within the tailings and the requirement for a costly plastic lining, subaqueous deposition is recommended, which in turn has negative implications for tailings stability, consolidation and closure. Adopting a neutral pH rougher stage rejects silicate gangue but recovers pyritic material to the cleaners for a subsequent selective flotation stage, often after regrinding. This effectively quarantines the PAG pyritic material in a much lower volume cleaner tail, which can then be appropriately encapsulated within a larger non-lined flotation tails facility. It also facilitates cyanide leaching of the cleaner tail for gold recovery, with the encapsulated tailings facility being suitable for cyanidation tails storage. A case study from Europe is examined. For gold ores where the gold is sulfide-hosted, but not refractory, a flotation route with cyanidation of the concentrate can similarly produce the majority of tailings as a benign flotation tail and again quarantine the low volume concentrate leach tail in a small encapsulated cell with appropriate residual cyanide management measures applied. Overall economics for intensive leaching of a low volume concentrate stream can also be surprisingly positive. A feasibility study design example of the process and TSF is presented. Fragmentation modelling has been in use in the mining industry for a long time; however, there are still some aspects to tackle with regard to its use for strategic/planning and day-to-day purposes.On one hand, an important amount of resources are allocated to the task of calibrating and validating a good fragmentation model. Nonetheless, errors during the implementation stage introduce uncertainty into the prediction.On the other hand, it is common practice in the mining industry to use only discrete values to represent the fragmentation from blasting (k20, k50, k80), which provides a biased interpretation of the situation as, for instance, the best and worst possible cases are not taken into account. This is particularly critical when a continuous improvement philosophy has been adopted and modelling is used to either modify the drilling and blasting designs or plan ahead.It is well known that every site has particular conditions (rock mass, equipment, drilling and loading practices, among others) that often define unique trends in implementation. These trends can be captured using statistic and probabilistic techniques and then used as proxies for further analysis.This paper explores the potential of including implementation data in the form of probabilistic distributions into the Swebrec model to improve the performance of this engineering tool during the decision-making process.The fragmentation results of four designs were modelled using three different degrees of accuracy in the implementation for the burden, spacing and explosive column length.The data analysis showed that the probabilistic approach helps to achieve a broader perspective regarding the fragmentation that it is possible to obtain and the implications for the subsequent processes. The analysis also showed that the likelihood of producing similar fragmentation with different designs (involving different powder factors and costs associated) increases with the variability of the implementation.CITATION:Parra, H and Zenteno, D, 2015. Oxidised pellets have become an indispensable high-quality charge for blast furnaces (BF) due to their uniform particle size, high iron grade, high mechanical strength, good metallurgical performance, as well as relatively low energy consumption and gaseous pollutant emissions in pellet production. Nevertheless, due to the rapid development of the global steel industry, highquality pellet feeds are becoming more and more scarce. In order to broaden the source of pellet feeds and reduce the production cost of pellets, more and more steel mills are going to use coarse iron ore fines with relatively low iron grade and low impurities for preparation of desirable pellet feeds through a typical wet grinding-settling-filtering process. In this work, the grinding, settling and filtering behaviour of Brazilian and Australian iron ore fines are studied and compared, aiming at finding out the internal relationship between the mineralogical characteristics of different iron ore types and their grinding-settling-filtering performance. The results show that the grindability is heavily dependent on the hardness of iron ores, which is governed by the mineralogical characteristics of the raw materials. Usually the higher the hardness, the more grinding energy is required. Except for Brazilian specularite, Australian hematite-goethite type iron ore fines and Brazilian hematite ore fines exhibit good grindability with a Bond Work Index of about 10–15 kW•h/t. In addition, the settling and filtering performance of ground iron ores are largely affected by the density, mineralogical characteristics of iron ore fines (eg, quantity of clay minerals and goethite and porosity of ore particles), grinding fineness, etc. Generally, iron ore fines with higher density, lower quantity of soft minerals (clay and goethite) and larger particle size give superior settling and filtering performance. For iron ore fines with inferior grinding, settling and filtering performance, applying more energy-efficient grinding techniques, blending with ore types with good settling and filtering performance can reduce grinding energy consumption and improve settling and filtration rates to maximise the productivity of equipment and lower the operational cost

Mine and ore beneficiation wastes and smelter contaminated soils often cause phytotoxicity and threaten adverse environmental effects if not remediated. Science has clarified both the risks from soil metals and methods to alleviate those risks that can be applied at low cost. Phytoremediation is a family of plant and agronomy based technologies to deal with environmental aspects of sites requiring remediation. If valid risk assessment indicates that metals comprise risk, phytostabilisation may be used to alleviate that risk for most contaminated sites. In particular, Zn-Pb, Cu and Ni mine and smelter sites are readily remediated by making the soil calcareous and fertile, with added organic and metal sorbent amendments that include soil microbes to ‘revitalise’ the soil. In each case, the soil fertility and causes of phytotoxicity should be clarified by agricultural soil extractions, and the combination of amendments required to improve fertility and reverse phytotoxicity identified and found locally. In contrast with phytostabilisation, phytoextraction/phytomining uses rare metal hyperaccumulator plants and agronomic management to maximise annual phytoextraction of soil elements into plant shoots for harvest, ashing and use as a metal ore. Plants that accumulate more than two per cent Ni in shoots, and yield 10–20 t ha-1 dry biomass yield 200–400 kg Ni ha-1, which has value greater than all common agricultural crops. Considering the value of elements, existence of hyperaccumulator plants and demonstrated agronomic management for Ni phytomining, it is clear that mine sites and Ni mineralised subore-grade serpentine soils can be phytomined economically as an agricultural mining technology. A team developed agronomic methods and improved cultivars of Alyssum, which can be profitably grown on temperate zone Ni mineralised or contaminated soils. Plant species for tropical ultramafic soil materials have been identified. "The demand for fine and ultra-fine grinding associated with the processing of more challenging, finer grained orebodies and the global driver of minimising energy consumption has been an increased focus in our industry. Outotec’s stirred milling technology, the high intensity grinding mill (HIGmill™), was launched in 2012 in response to this industry need. First Quantum Minerals Ltd selected HIGmill™ technology for its Kevitsa mine in Northern Finland. The 700 kW mill is grinding copper rougher concentrate to improve copper/nickel separation and copper recovery. Selection of the HIGmill™ followed mineralogy analysis and laboratory and pilot testing for HIG milling in parallel with flotation tests to determine optimum grind size and energy input.The paper discusses the challenges and successes of the test work, manufacture, installation, commissioning and subsequent operation of the mill. Grinding performance is presented and a comparison between predicted and operating energy efficiency is made. Mount Isa Mines (MIM) Copper Concentrator currently utilises Agitair 120 banks for its roughing flotation circuit. Apart from a rotor change, the only other significant work completed to the Agitair banks since their installation and commissioning over 40 years ago has been a like for like refurbishment in 2016. The Agitair banks at the MIM Copper Concentrator currently utilise the Pipsa rotor design which progressively replaced the original Chile X rotor design in the 1980’s and 90’s in the copper concentrator. Since the development of the Pipsa rotors, modern rotors such as the Dorr-Oliver (DO) high shear rotors have been released to the market with proven recovery and concentrate grade improvements over previous rotor designs. Precast concrete segmental linings have enjoyed widespread use around the world, and are the lining type of choice for tunnels constructed using a shielded tunnel boring machine. However, there is significant variation in the design of such linings from one country to the next in such areas as materials, geometry, fixtures and fittings, waterproofing and reinforcement to name but a few. This arises because the speed at which the technology has developed within some countries and regions has sometimes outstripped the transfer of such technologies to the rest of the world.This paper provides some insights into the variations in lining design in different parts of the world with the aim of providing designers and constructors alike a reference for the different methods adopted. It provides a context for these developments by briefly summarising historical reviews of this subject before looking at some of the developments around the world over the last 15–20 years. The developments are presented with some reference to the reasons for implementation, and the advantages and limitations commented on.
