The North Western Sewer tunnel extends over 11.5 km in the North Western suburbs of Melbourne.The $253 million tunnel project provides a critical link in the Melbourne Sewer Network. The existing sewers fail to service the increasing demands of the growing population of the North West regions of Melbourne. This project will protect the environment and improve the standards of service of the existing system. This paper concentrates on Section three of this project, consisting of the final 4 km of the Contract, three access shafts and a cut and cover section of tunnel.Transfield Tunnelling as Head Contractor constructed the tunnel for Melbourne Water Corporation, with Enetech Streamline, formally Streamline Australia, a trading arm of Melbourne Water acting as Superintendent.Excavation of Section three of this project commenced in September 1994 and project completion is scheduled for October 1998. The tunnel passes below the residential suburb of Essendon, through some of the most challenging ground conditions ever attempted to be tunnelled in Australia.

Production scale experiment study was carried out in a limestone open-pit for testing the theory and method proposed by the author(Zou, 1987). The results of experiments indicate that the mathematical model and computer programs, which include the consideration of both the three dimentional distributions of the weak planes and the energy densities of explosion stress waves, reflect the physical process of rock bench blasting quite well. The predicted fragment distributions coincide well with the practical fragment distributions measured with the photo-image analysis method proposed by the author(Zou,1989). The paper "A Three Dimensional Mathematical Model for Calculating the Rock Fragmentation by Bench Blasting in the Open-pit"(Zou,1987), which was published in some conferences and journals, has interested some scholors and researchers. In order to test and improve the model, a group of production scale experiments were carried out in a limestone open-pit during 1986-1987. The procedure and results of the experiments are illustrated in this paper.

Reduction of waste oxides from steel plant operations was investigated in a laboratory tube furnace at different temperatures and furnace atmospheres. The results have shown that the waste oxide pellets are reduced rapidly to very high degrees of metallization irrespective of the furnace atmosphere and that the reduction is simultaneously accompanied by significant low- ering of the original impurities. It is shown, for example, that treatment at 1000¦C for 30 min. can reduce the Zn content from 0.98% to 0.0065% and K and Na contents from 0.19% and 0.76% respectively, to less than 0.01%. However, pellet strength at 1000¦C was low but this, as shown in the paper, can be very significantly improved by treatment at 1250¦C. The results indicate that the reduction of the waste oxide pellets of this investigation proceeds almost certainly by a chain reaction mechanism and that this principle could be advantageously extended to the reduction of iron ores and other oxides in general.

Cobalt is principally produced by hydrometallurgical means from the copper-cobalt ores of Zambia and Zaire. In addition cobalt is commonly found in minor quantities in association with nickel and copper-nickel orebodies. Generally the level of cobalt common to these latter orebodies does not warrant separate processing unless the metal price reaches levels last achieved in 1979 and 1980. For pyrometallurgical processing the distribution of cobalt and the factors which affect the distribution of cobalt between matte and slag are not well understood. A limited amount of fundamental research has been completed on cobalt distribution both for simple oxide and matte systems. The paper briefly reviews the relevant literature on theoretical aspects of cobalt distribution between metal and slag and the deportment of cobalt in sulphide smelting circuits. The deportment of cobalt in the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter circuit is critically analysed and areas where recovery improvements may be achieved are highlighted.

One of the responsibilities of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works is to provide a sewerage system for the metropolis of Melbourne which now contains over 2.5 million people. In providing this sewerage system it was necessary for the Board to embark on a large tunnelling programme some 20 years ago. As a result of this extensive tunnel construction programme, tunnel boring machines and shaft sinking methods have been developed to cope with the soft ground and soft to medium rock found in the southern and eastern areas of Melbourne where the majority of the recent tunnelling has been carried out. While in the last few years radical changes in construction methods have not been made, development has continued and improvements have been made, which have enabled the Board to extend the limits of the ground conditions in which it can efficiently construct shafts and also tunnels with boring Machines.

A brief descri;tioki is given of nuclear power reactors and their fuels. These fuels are made from a variety of uranium compounds such as uranium dioxide, and uranium carbide as well as uranium metal and its alloys. The various processes used to produce some of these compounds from yellow cake are outlined. Using the natural uranium, heavy water reactor by way of illustration, fabrication of fuel elements is dis- cussed and the characteristics of U02 powder required for this partic- ular fabrication are indicated. The flowsheets and equipment presently in use overseas for production of this type of U02 powder are described. Possible areas where improvements might be made to this conventional process are enumerated and some details are then given of the programme of work which has commenced at the A.A.E.C. Research Establishment to gain experience in the general field of nuclear grade UO20

Due to operational and regulatory practicalities, pit lakes will continue to be legacies of many open cut mining lease relinquishments. Unplanned or inappropriate management of these significant geographical features may lead to a short-term liability to all stakeholders during mining operations, or to ongoing liability to the local community and environment following lease relinquishment. However, the potential for pit lakes to provide benefit to companies, communities and the environment is frequently unrecognised and yet may be a vital contribution to the sustainability of the open cut mining industry. Improved remediation technologies are offering more avenues for pit lake end use than ever before, at the same time mining companies, local communities and regulatory authorities are also becoming more aware of the benefit these water resources have to offer. Sustainable pit lake management aims to better minimise short- and long-term pit lake liabilities, and yet also to maximise short- and long-term pit lake opportunities as well.

Development in the theory and practice of hearth drainage is reviewed. Difficulties in the hearth drainage were re- newed during late sixties and early seventies when the size of a blast furnace and the top pressure were increased to result in the increase in tapping rate. Hearth drainage was improved first by in- creased number of tapping and then decreased tapping rate as it was predicted by theoretical studies. State of the coke bed in the hearth, e.g., 'floating' or 'sitting-on' the hearth bottom, is discussed in relation with influential factors on it and its influence on the furnace operation. The 'sitting-on' coke bed is to be aimed at for the consistent furnace working and for the lower rate of erosion of the hearth refractory. As the continuous tapping became standard prac- tice in large blast furnaces, the interest in the basic research renewed. Prospect of the further research including mathematical modelling of the hearth drainage is discussed.

Modem open cut and underground mining in the tropics inevitably expose partially weathered and unweathered rocks to oxygen and water, leading to weathering and the release of solutes and often acidity as well. Historical monitoring data can demonstrate these phenomena. Three case studies from open cut mines in the north of the Northern Territory illustrate the deterioration in quality of pond water receiving drainage from waste rock dumps. The potential for deterioration of water quality was not recognised in many mine Environmental Impact Statements prepared and accepted in the 1980s. The examples documented indicate the importance of adequately planning for this near inevitable process. Retrofitting a mine water management system to 'no' or minimal release can be very difficult and expensive, and may not be feasible, leading to downstream pollution. The characterisation of acid and solute production potential of ore and waste rock, and improved dumping strategies and water management are very important to minimise the environmental impact of mining in the tropics.

This paper describes the application of the SBRE framework to model the Olympic Dam deposit, one of the largest copper and uranium deposits in the world. Geostatistical simulations are the best practice for quantifying uncertainty in the mineral value chain and estimating resources. However, these simulations are currently undertaken on an ad hoc basis in the mining industry due to the high requirements in computing resources and capabilities in advanced geostatistics. The SBRE project provides a standard framework to test, build, and run conditional simulation workflows, which has been applied to the Olympic Dam deposit. Conventional geostatistical methods face challenges when modelling the Olympic Dam deposit, such as non-stationarity, non-linear correlations, and a large number of grid blocks to simulate. To address these challenges, a combination of methods was used, including projection pursuit multivariate transform, trend-residual decorrelation, pluri-Gaussian simulations, and turning-bands simulations. Various tools and applications were used to build the model, including in-house developed applications, Autovariogram software (Varify), and the RMSP python library. All computations were accomplished on the AWS cloud using the EC2-Batch service. The final set of simulations was validated using various methods, such as grade-tonnage curves, histograms, swath plots, and variogram reproductions, as well as validation using historical samples back-testing. The study highlights the importance of an automated, modular, and scalable framework in the development of conditional simulation workflows and describes the learning gained from trials of different combinations of methods and software

Globalisation and consolidation is resulting in the mining industry coming to be dominated by a small number of very large companies seeking to lever assets and knowledge to create wealth. As an important service provider to the mining industry, the minerals tertiary education sector needs to understand these global drivers and respond to them. However, it is under-resourced and its sustainability is under challenge in all Western countries. Through the establishment and funding of the Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC), the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) has provided a unique opportunity to build a national, world-class minerals tertiary education environment in Australia that can be sustained in the long-term. This paper reviews how the global changes occurring in the mining industry provide the model for what needs to occur in the minerals education sector and how MTEC is the logical vehicle to facilitate these changes. It concludes by suggesting that the time has come to integrate the minerals tertiary education providers into one business. Furthermore, the vision should be for a global mining education academy based around a virtual university capable of servicing the cultural diversity and continuing education needs of the global minerals industry.

By sharing my experiences I want to encourage you to consider your own experience with leadership, taking on change, learning from and contributing to the development of others.I have been very fortunate to be part of many new innovations into underground mining over the past 40 or so years; most of it with Conzinc Rio Tinto Australia (CRA)/Rio Tinto operations.•From hand-held drills and a homemade single boom Jumbo mounted on an old Airtrak, to the sophisticated twin boom jumbos with high speed drifters all controlled by an on-board computer;•from a Scraper winch and a Wagner 2D loader to fully automated electric LHDs that navigate to the tipple, empty the bucket and return to where they come from;•from hand-held cut-and-fill and timber stoping in Broken Hill to the bulk mining methods of a block cave where at Northparkes we mined more ore in a month than we mined in the total five years of operations at Currawang;•from hand-held scaling and bolting with no skin protection to installing ground support with Jumbos and sophisticated Cable Bolters and the introduction of in cycle shotcrete;•from hand-held ladder rising and shaft sinking to Box Hole rigs, Raise Bore Machines and Blind Hole shaft sinking; and•from Gelignite based AN60 stick explosives, ANFO, fuse firing and half second detonators to Powergel, Emulsions and electronic computer programmed detonators that can somehow be initiated by ‘Blast Ped’ travelling through the rock.

Pressure filters were found to be necessary to produce Elura silver/lead and zinc concentrates at sufficiently low moisture contents for bulk cargo shipment by sea to smelters.The difficulty in obtaining low moistures was due to the fine primary grind, 80% passing 45 microns, and resultant fine concentrates, 97% passing 45 microns.The filtration system was designed to filter up to 90,000 tonnes/year silver/lead concentrates and up to 130,000 tonnes/year zinc concentrates.This paper details the preliminary test work to select Larox automatic pressure filters, and the commissioning and operation of these filters to achieve design criteria for both concentrates. The design criteria for both concentrates have been bettered due to the concentrates being coarser than the design sizing.

In 2010, Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s operations commenced the planning and design of a sampling and analysis system for the new 50 Mt/a Cape Lambert Port B (CLB) facility. Current sampling systems at the ports consist of automated robotic, mass-based sampling protocols employed at Dampier, and semi-automated, time-based sampling systems operating at Cape Lambert Port A.The new sampling system at CLB has brought together a fully automated sampling and analysis system utilising time-based sampling, with the capacity to sample ore products of medium quality variation as defined in ISO 3082 (ISO, 2009). The CLB system is required to sample at shiploading rates from 6000 t/h to 13 440 t/h and provide full load-port analysis. The sampling approach is to proportionally extend primary increments (of varying mass relative to shiploading rate) to a standard length using variable speed aero-belt conveyor systems. This enables a fixed number of secondary cuts to be achieved for all primary increment masses and to be delivered to the automated cell. The cell is required to be capable of concurrently processing four individual shipments, each containing multiple cargoes.Achieving the target sampling precision for all export cargo sizes has culminated in the planning, design and construction of the largest automated iron ore port laboratory in the world. The CLB sampling and analysis cell was commissioned in Q3 and Q4 2013. In large coal strip mines, there are many different processes at work: stripping, overburden removal using trucks/shovels, cast blasting, slot dozer pushing, more fragmentation and further truck/shovel benches. A key component to each of these steps is the use of machines. In modern operations, most machine costs are tracked within Enterprise systems that transact costs and repair work order management. Similarly, in contemporary mines most machines are tracked using technology that provides precise performance measures for each key process. Such technologies include productivity monitors on draglines, dozers and drills and fleet management systems for trucks and shovels. Linking these two sources of seemingly disparate data û costs and performance by machine û would allow for the precise calculation of unit costs by specific machine. This is similar to an activity-based costing system, except in this machine-based system, calculations are made at an even finer granular level. There are many uses for such an integrated information system in mine planning and performance management, both in real-time and through historical analysis.A real-time fleet costs (FLC) measurement process was developed as part of a larger blending-related, multi-million dollar project centred on a centralised remote control room developed at the University of ArizonaÆs Mining Information Systems and Operations Management Mine Control Center. The FLC component of the overall blending system would allow a mine controller to manage the equipment fleet by viewing its cost in real time and, when mixed with other revenue-related components, the exact profit. For example, a mine controller may show high utilisation while still maintaining a production surplus. This could occur, for example, if the equipment is driven long distances. This might appear in traditional performance metrics as æhigh production performanceÆ, but in reality may prove less profitable. This paper discusses the technical development of the FLC, its deployment and its impact on controller performance, and compares mine profitability before and after its application.

The current Queensland Government’s rehabilitation guidelines for post-mining landforms present a hierarchy of preferred outcomes for different areas within the mine site (see Figure 1). Within all areas, restoration of a ‘natural’ ecosystem is clearly prioritised as the preferred end land use, although it is not a mandatory practice. Beyond the official guidelines, there is also an implied preference for renaturalisation echoed in most environmental impact assessments and closure plans (Lamb, Erskine and Fletcher, 2015). In practice, however, ecosystem restoration does not extend to construction of a realistic topographic form, largely rejecting the ‘natural’ aesthetic implied by ecosystem restoration in favour of adopting a functional aesthetic in deference to standard engineering criteria.This presentation argues that the established disconnection between actual and implied landform aesthetics is indicative of a wider problem around end landform planning. It contends that such disconnects are the result of the impact of competing ‘ways of seeing’ (Bradley and Kearney, 2007) the same landscape, and reflect the struggle between, and inclusion of, these differing perspectives within the planning process itself. We propose that recognition of the complexity of landscape perceptions is key to improving post-mining landscape outcomes, and the misalignment between land use values and landscape aesthetics can be addressed by establishing an overarching framework for landscape preferences. As such, we outline the reality of stakeholder landscape preferences, and present a critical response to current planning practices within the life-of-mine (LOM).CITATION:Hine, A and Erskine, P, 2016. The Knelson Continuous Variable Discharge (CVD) is a continuous centrifugal gravity concentrator for high-mass yield recovery applications. It has four operating variables that enable control of mass yield, product grade and recovery namely: fluidisation water, bowl speed, pinch valve open time and pinch valve closed time. Plant testing of a pilot scale Knelson CVD6 was conducted to evaluate the effects of operating variables on mineral separation. The analysis of operating variable effects has provided a framework for the development of operating guidelines for the CVD.

During 2015 and 2016, the authors conducted a number of surveys, workshops and reviews of ventilation and gas management practices in Australian underground coalmines. The study was funded by ACARP with a brief to identify gaps in ventilation and gas management practices for current and future needs, and to prepare a road map for change that would assist in delivering improvements.The study found that despite many examples of leading practice, gas and ventilation management is not afforded the attention and priority that is warranted and that this must be remedied if future operational performance targets are to be achieved and the safety of the industry protected. Coal mining is recognised globally as a hazardous activity, and as a result operates under high levels of regulatory and public scrutiny while managing a workforce operating in a high-risk environment. Mining companies have developed sophisticated risk assessment procedures, management systems and personnel competency requirements that facilitate the safety and health of employees, and Australia is a world leader in coal mining safety and health.RISKGATE is an Australian Coal Association Research Program funded online platform that delivers broad cross-industry knowledge about current practice in the identification, assessment and management of coal mining risk. Centennial Coal has engaged with the RISKGATE program, managed by the University of Queensland’s Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre, since its inception in 2010, and contributed topic experts to many modules, including underground topics within the geological and geotechnical domain (strata underground, outburst, coal bumps and bursts, and inrush).In 2013, Centennial Coal experienced significant unexpected strata failure at the Mandalong mine without any personal injury or fatality. This paper presents a case study in the application of RISKGATE to management of this unwanted event, the steps that were implemented, the information that was sourced and the contribution that RISKGATE made to the final outcomes. At Newmont Corporation drill hole spacing studies are done to support the business in understanding the cost of collecting additional information (with a specific focus on drill hole sampling density) versus the value of additional drilling in terms of resource risk reduction. For the last 20 years drill hole spacing studies have been executed in an effort to answer the following question: What spacing should the deposit be drilled at to achieve a certain level of resource confidence so that when mining occurs the resource model delivers as predicted ie what is the optimal sampling density? The optimal sampling density supports a resource model that provides a sound foundation for mine planning purposes and resource/reserve reporting. At Newmont Corporation drill hole spacing studies are now a requisite for understanding drill data density needs for new deposits and near mine expansions. This paper details the evolution of drill hole spacing studies at Newmont Corporation in terms of methodology and usage.
