Diamond bearing deposits are extremely low grade and require large bulk samples to be tested to determine the grade and quality of the stones. The semi portable plants, for treatment of these bulk samples, have followed the development of commercial processes for diamond concentration. These processes included jigs and diamond pans, which have been largely supplanted by heavy media processes for primary concentration, due to the higher efficiencies in all size ranges. A number'of flowsheets including these processes are presented. The final recovery of diamonds from the bulk sample concentrates can be accomplished by rejigging, adherance to grease or by X-ray sorting. Flowsheets incorporating all the processes are presented. Two plants are described; one incorporating jigging, rejigging and hand sorting; the other using heavy media separation, and wet X-ray sorting.

Research and development into alternate gold and precious metals adsorbents has resulted in the development of a new technology named the AUROSAVE adsorption process (ARGOSAVE'" for high silver con- tent ores). Adsorbents called VITROKELE'" can be tailored for either Gold I (cyanide leach) or Gold III (halide leach) applications. VITROKELE consists of a chemically synthetic adsorbent carried on an inert substrate, often a polystyrene bead. It is suitable for both in- pulp and in-solution use. VITROKELE adsorbent offers certain advan- tages over both carbon and ion exchange resin adsorbents. This paper describes testwork on Australian ores and commercial solu- tions obtained from operating Australian plants demonstrating the kinetic loading characteristics, elution methods and other operating parameters of VITROKELE adsorbent in the cyanide system. Brief reference is made to VITROKELE in the Gold III system.

The knowledge of the expected run of mine (ROM) fragmentation during the feasibility study of a green field site is essential for the design of downstream crushing and milling processes. However,the prediction of blast fragmentation can be a challenging process due to the uncertainty related to the blast design and rock mass parameters. In general,a number of possible blast designs are considered in a feasibility study,with factors such as bench height and blasthole diameter influencing the design. Rock mass parameters are normally derived from a limited number of geotechnical diamond drill cores. Although diamond drill core can provide detailed information concerning intact rock strength (unconfined compressive strength and point load),it provides limited structural information to predict the in situ block size distribution of the rock mass. The in situ block size is an essential input to the prediction of the fragmentation distribution, in particular the coarse end. This paper outlines the methodology of blast fragmentation modeling undertaken for a green field feasibility study at the Riska gold deposit in Indonesia. The favoured milling process for the feasibility study was dump leaching,with no crushing of the ore material extracted from the pit. For this reason,blast fragmentation was a critical issue to be addressed by the study. A range of blast designs were considered with bench heights and blasthole diameters ranging from 4 m to 7 m and 76 mm to 102 mm respectively. Rock mass data was obtained from 19 diamond drill cores across the deposit (total drill length approximately 2200 m). Intact rock strength was estimated from qualitative strength descriptors,while the in situ block size distribution of the rock mass was estimated from the Rock Quality Designation (RQD) of the core. The methodology of fragmentation prediction involved a number of steps including the estimation of rock mass parameters from diamond drillhole data including the estimation of the in situ block size, delineation of blast domains within the deposit,and the assessment of the impact of various blast design parameters and rock mass variation on the predicted fragmentation distribution. The modelling process for the Riska green field site highlighted the need for additional rock mass data to be collected post feasibility stage and once the development of the mine commenced.

The Ausmelt Catalytic Waste Converter (CWC) has been developed for use in the treatment of industrial wastes and for the recycling of secondary materials. Ausmelt Technology uses a top submerged lance system within a versatile and efficient slag bath reactor. High temperature pyrometallurgical reactions are carefully controlled within an oxidised molten siliceous slag such that metals can be extracted from waste feedstock for recycling, with non-volatile elements reporting to the slag, usually as oxides. Modification of the slag chemistry results in a final slag product that is stable, vitrified and is able to pass standard leach tests such that it is safe to discard or be used in civil engineering applications. Toxic components in the wastes such as organohalides can be completely destroyed and are prevented from reforming. Waste to energy conversion is practiced by the addition of a heat exchanger/steam generator in the converter offgas system. The Ausmelt CWC has been used for recovering zinc from residues and slags, treating spent potliner (SPL) from the aluminium industry and a wide range of electronic and other potentially valuable waste materials. Methods of monitoring the exhaust gases at different stages in the CWC gas handling system are discussed. The assay of these gases prior to emission is used to assist in the control of the converter chemistry to ensure the complete oxidative breakdown of the feedstock.

The equilibrium phase relations in the Fe- Mn-Ti-0-S system were established at 1380 and 1485 K. The elemental distributions between the equilibrium phases were obtained by chemical- ly analysing selected samples from the phase study. The results are considered in relation to the coal reduction process for upgrading ilmenite. The beneficial effect of adding sulfur to a kiln that uses a manganese-rich feed is ex- plained by the formation of a metal-sulfide solid-solution phase that removes part of the manganese from the oxide system. The optimum conditions for operating the reduction kiln are determined, and the practical need to operate the kiln at other than optimum conditions is explained. It is shown how the experimental data can be used to predict the best compromise conditions for reduction and the resultant purity of the product.

This analysis attempts to reconcile existing ecological theories, rehabilitation planning goals and implementation constraints in the form of a rehabilitation paradigm that considers potential and pragmatic ecosystem transformation pathways. The framework prioritises multiple developmental scenarios for post-disturbed landscapes within a continuum of ecological outcomes. A feature of the framework is that ænovelÆ ecosystems and agro-ecosystems, having a range of commercial and societal values, are valid outcomes spanning the conceptual divide between the ecological functions of under-rehabilitated versus re-instated ænaturalÆ landscapes, especially in a changing environment. Landscape suitability analyses are considered to be fundamental to the incorporation of regional landscape and climate in the implementation of land rehabilitation and management strategies. Decarbonisation of the steel industry has recently attracted a lot of research and technological development. Most of the technological developments are centred around the replacement of blast furnace (BF), which has been the main primary smelting furnace in the ironmaking step of steel production. Replacement of the BF is not an easy task because of BF’s many established capabilities over the years, especially its ability to use low-grade iron feed. In this regard, Metso has developed its own technology, Metso’s Outotec direct reduced iron (DRI) smelting furnace, to tackle this problem. The recently developed six-in line electric furnace for DRI smelting can be used for primary smelting of DRI from blast furnace grade iron ore. Unlike the electric arc furnace (EAF), the DRI smelting furnace can handle larger slag volumes that emanate from the high gangue in BF grade DRI. Therefore, fluxing plays an important role in operating the DRI smelting furnace. This paper presents fluxing options and proposes slag quality and operating windows for the DRI smelting furnace. Also, the effect of slag on refractory durability will be discussed.

The geological exploration and evaluation of coal reserves involves the appraisal of very large amounts of data. Computers afford an ideal means of handling and manipulating the data, thereby avoiding the laborious and expensive method of manually compiling the logs in full descriptive language. The Minad system of computer storage and retrieval of geological and analytical data is particularly suited to the description of cores and cuttings from exploration drill-holes. The encoded data is arranged in a 120-column computer output sheet format; descriptive geological information in a 54-column geolog and analytical information in a 64-column assaylog. The acquired data is quantitative, uniform and relatively complete and can be selectively retrieved for processing by a wide range of specialized computer programs developed for the coal mining industry. Visual retrieval of data for manual processing is facilitated by the use of simple codes and logical word abbreviations.

Conventionally, a combined system consist- ing of a dry or wet pulverizer and kneading mac- hine is applied to the pretreatment of fine mat- erials for agglomeration, especially for pellet- izing. However, treatment cannot be expected to be satisfactory owing to the complexities of the process. A new process was developed to over- come the defects inherent in the conventional process. This new process treats certain fine materials having a moisture content somewhat lower than that suitable for pelletizing in a ball or rod mill. The mill is of special de- sign in which grinding and strong kneading are performed to give an extremely homogeneous ball- ing material with appropriate size distribution and pelletizing characteristics. The most serious problem in this process is the choking of sticky materials in the mill. A specially designed rubber lining was installed in the mill to overcome this trouble. This paper presents actual results from our iron ore pelletizing plant relating to the pelletization of other fine materials.

An assessment has been made of six reported methods for the determination of the swelling of iron ore pellets on reduction. The methods are discussed on the basis of apparatus requirements, reduction conditions, sample requirements, measurement of swelling and reproducibility. It is concluded that the CNRM, LKAB, and Lurgi methods are the most satisfactory which presently exist for determination of the swelling of industrially produced, iron ore pellets.

Electronic noses are being used in the processing industries and in fields such as environmental and occupational hygiene to detect a wide variety of problems from contaminated foods to toxic chemicals in soils. Recently, research has been conducted into the use of these devices for detecting spontaneous combustion in mines with the aim of producing a method for early detection of a developing heating. Gas samples were collected from both SimtarsÆ 16 m3 large-scale spontaneous combustion reactor and the University of QueenslandÆs two-metre column. The samples were analysed using an electronic nose. GCMS and HPLC were used to identify some of the components present. A number of issues both from a practical mine situation and a scientific standpoint have been identified that need to be addressed before these devices can be used to detect a developing heating. Aluminised bags routinely used in the mining industry to collect gas samples for analysis of the permanent gases are not suitable for use with electronic nose devices as they have a æfingerprintÆ from the polymer lining that interferes with the coal heating fingerprint. Tedlar bags used for environmental gas sampling are also unsuitable due to their fingerprint. Gas samples can be collected in glass gas bulbs with aluminium seals and successfully analysed. However the aluminium foil used to seal the bulbs is a restricted item in underground mines. It was also found that the volatile organic fingerprint of the coal heating was extremely weak at temperatures below 130¦C. Before a useful application can be developed, further investigation into the chemical species present in the off-gases from Australian coals is required.

There are significant Mineral Resource and Reserve reporting challenges facing a mining company operating in the global arena. This paper specifically examines the Mineral Resource and Reserve reporting challenge facing BHP Billiton. The changing regulatory environment creates a significant challenge for global mining companies when reporting Mineral Resources and Reserves. The development and implementation of internal policies and standards for collecting and collating resource and reserve information is required for corporate governance, however the challenge is then to report this information publicly in such a way as to comply with the various codes and requirements in the many jurisdictions in which the company is required to report. The move to an International Code is not only desirable but is an essential requirement in todayÆs global market. The agreement to report using a single code internationally is however only the first step. A truly practical international reporting system must have common definitions and guidelines for interpretation as well as an international approach to the definition of a Competent Person, and even more importantly a common acceptance of that code by the relevant investment regulatory bodies. Without the universal acceptance of the concept of an international reporting code by the major regulatory bodies, implementation of such a code will be limited. With the major global mining companies seeking to raise capital in the USA, the worldÆs largest capital market, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and its approach to reserve reporting is becoming increasingly important. The development and implementation of an International Code must gain the support and acceptance of the SEC if it is to be successful.

The requirement for rapid vertical development for underground ventilation is often a factor when dealing with dynamic mine plans, with short vertical developments being used to optimise ventilation systems. In an effort to increase the safety and efficiency of the constructions, a simple and effective sinking methodology is required that is both adaptable and repeatable. A modified shaft construction methodology is proposed that attempts to minimise risk to the personnel as well as be cost-effective. Readily available equipment is used to ensure adaptability to the various environments and shaft parameters.One of the greatest risks of shaft sinking is having personnel working suspended over open cavities or underneath suspended loads. Removing this risk, by ensuring all construction is done from solid ground, allows for safer sinking operations. As the process is repeatable, familiarity and confidence in its construction sequence will increase with each successive sink.A trial sink is performed with a 3.6 m diameter, 20 m deep shaft. The shaft was excavated using a conventional strip-and-line philosophy, with the shaft then being lined from the collar via the use of large diameter corrugated steel culverts. The annulus between the steel culverts and shaft excavation is then filled with a concrete mixture to secure it in position.The new process was successful, with no personnel at any time during the process being suspended above an open excavation. The installation had relatively low capital and operational costs and was completed faster than an equivalent, conventional concrete-lined shaft construction. Therefore when compared to conventional shaft-sinking methods, this process can be considered safer, more efficient and relatively cost-effective.Further research is required to determine whether this method can be expanded to larger vertical developments.CITATION:Markoski, R and Grealish, P, 2014. Although there are sound principles used in the world recognised methods of gas emission prediction, results based on these methods applied to several Australian longwall extractions have yielded unacceptably high discrepancies. With the development of mining in new seams and at higher rates of extraction, the need has grown for a methodical approach to predicting gas emission levels specifically for local Australian mining conditions. Such an approach is developed from results of recorded emission readings during longwall mining at Appin and Pacific Collieries over the past 6 years.

Sixty Schlumberger electrical soundings were carried out in the Depot Springs area, near Agnew, Western Australia as part of an investigation into the availability of groundwater for the Agnew nickel project. The object of the survey was to locate calcrete aquifers related to Tertiary drainage channels on the Pre- Cambrian surface. The electrical soundings were initially interpreted using sets of master curves and auxiliary point methods. Electrical sections were produced and contour maps prepared of apparent resistivity for AB=80m, total conductance of the overburden and transverse resistance.

The Vanyukov Process is a high-intensity smelting system that has been proven over the last 20 years for various metallurgical operations including the smelting of copper, nickel, copper-zinc, antimony concentrates, municipal waste treatment and pig-iron production. Extensive pilot plant tests on copper and copper-nickel concentrates have provided information for the design of the commercial furnaces. The thermodynamic analysis, design idea and the data obtained from commercial furnaces have shown that Vanyukov Process would be the best choice to smelt copper-nickel and nickel sulphide concentrates as well as oxide nickel ores.

Utah Development Company began prospecting for coking coal in 1961 and Blackwater Mine became a reality in June 1967. Exploratory and develop- ment drilling has been a continuing effort and reserves have been assessed at several stages. Some of the history of exploration and reserves assessment is given and practices in drilling, sampling and testing are described, particularly in regard to objectives of drilling and reserves estimation. The current methods for calculation of reserves are described and some comment is made regarding use of the data in mine blending control and plant operation including correla- tion of results.

Currently there are in excess of 200 companies listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange and the total market value of all the listed shares amounts to $4.6 billion. The number of listed mining companies stands at nine and with a market value of $35 million accounts for less than one per cent of the total market capitalisation. In comparison, the Australian mining and energy sectors account for nearly 50 per cent of the total market capitalisation, which currently exceeds A$41 billion. Surprisingly the share markets in both countries were primarily founded on the discoveries of minerals last century.

Although small units have been in use formany years, particularly in opal mining at shallow depths, there has been little effort in the past to explore the potential of the vacuum lift system in other more demanding applications. Recent developments in Western Australia by a small number of mining companies, contractors and manufacturers have seen the design and construction of several larger, more powerful units for use in winzing, shaft sinking, hoisting and spillage removal. Some of these units have proved very successful and suggest that they could be developed for a wider range of applications and duties in future.
