As remaining gold deposits tend to become more refractory, some form of oxidative pre-treatment involving hydro or pyrometallurgy is necessary to maintain high metal recoveries. These pre-treatments include pressure oxidation, bio-leaching or roasting. In the past, the primary criterion for selection of oxidative pre-treatment relied mainly on the extent of gold recovery and relative economics. In this study, a different approach has been adopted, ie the quantitative determination of environmental performance of the oxidative pre-treatment processes bio-leaching, roasting and pressure oxidation to assess which had the least impact on the environment. By establishing the environmental performance of processes, waste minimisation can be addressed early in process selection. Using mass balances, the environmental theme method was applied to determine the performance, on the basis of gold treated, of the oxidative pre-treatment processes of selected plants. No clear trend was observed in the overall impacts of each of seven plants, with all but one of the environmental evaluation indices being of the same order of magnitude; this was probably due to masking effects arising from the large variations in feed composition, tonnage, and gold levels. Within each type of pre-oxidation plant however, certain trends were detectable. For instance, irrespective of plant size, ore composition or mineralogy, for the bio-leaching and pressure oxidation units, the general order of environmental impact from greatest to least was sequentially toxicity, acidification potential, depletion of resources, solid waste generation and greenhouse enhancement. For the roasters the acidification potential was the most significant. Determination of the environmental performance of the oxidative pre-treatment of a hypothetical ore in a plant of fixed tonnage was undertaken to remove the possible masking effects of variables associated with feeds of different mineralogy, gold tenor and tonnage. The bio-leaching process gave a marginally better performance than pressure oxidation, the roasting process the worst, although there was not a great difference between them. The decreasing order of contribution to the environmental index was acidification potential, toxicity, resource depletion, solid waste generation and greenhouse enhancement for bio-leaching and pressure oxidation; whereas it was acidification potential, solid waste generation, toxicity, resource depletion and greenhouse enhancement for roasting. Since the major contributor to the environmental index was the acidification potential, the environmental performance of treatment processes for the acidic effluents was calculated. After neutralisation of the net acid resulting from bio-oxidation and pressure oxidation, and the application of various scrubbing and product formation processes for the sulphur dioxide from the roasting process, it was shown that pressure oxidation gave a marginally better performance than bio-leaching, ahead of roasting. This study demonstrated the potential for the development of a predictive tool which could be used in determining the environmental performance, and thus the selection, optimisation, and improvement of pre-oxidation processes for least impact on the environment. These would allow operation of these processes within defined environmental performance limits and decisions regarding the desirability of processing various parts of a heterogeneous orebody to be made on environmental grounds.

Charcoal produced from Syzygium Zeylanicum trees was widely used in ancient Sri Lankan iron smelting practices. Charcoal made from Syzygium Zeylanicum tree trunks, branches and leaves were analysed by optical mineralogy and SEM and found to contain unusually high concentrations of calcium oxalate (CaC2O4.H2O – CaOx) crystals in plant cells. Partial and full reduction tests of a high-P Brockman ore were conducted at several temperatures with coke and coke doped with CaOx and CaCO3. It was observed that CaOx promoted reduction and generated comparatively more metallic iron in reduced samples. Furthermore, CaOx encouraged phosphorous partition into slag phases than into the metallic iron, suggesting CaOx can a potential alternative fluxing material to calcium carbonate for treating high-P iron ores in ironmaking processes.

In the comminution industry cone crushers are widely used for secondary and subsequent stages of size reduction. Traditionally cone crushers have been operated and monitored manually. Alteration of discharge setting is now commonly achieved via hydraulic means, however, compensation of liner wear can still involve plant shutdown and loss of production. Drift in discharge setting due to liner wear is still a major problem that must be addressed to improve product quality, consistency and reduce recirculating load. The continuous demand for better quality products and the high cost of reprocessing or discarding unsaleable material, highlights the need for re-examination of the technology associated with the crushers to ensure optimum control and system efficiency. A collaborative project between Pegson Ltd, one of the leading UK manufacturers of jaw and cone crushers, De Montfort University Leicester, and Transfer Technology plc was established to address the technological requirement for automation of the control of cone crushers. The machine chosen for the study is a 900 Autocone cone crusher manufactured by Pegson Ltd. The design philosophy is based on a mechatronic approach providing a complete solution through a distributed network of intelligent sensors, artificial intelligence technology and adaptive control. The modular design of the system ensures a progressive sophistication in technology that allows the automation to be phased in as required. This will ensure maximum benefits to all sectors of the aggregate industry. It is estimated that the automation will result in savings of around ten per cent. The savings will result from minimising the production of unsaleable products by reliable condition monitoring and automation of the control and maintenance of system parameters to optimise system efficiency. Extension of the methods and principles into the mining sector is anticipated. The control over the size of crusher product will offer great benefits to the mining industry with significant implications for subsequent milling and beneficiation processes.

The Phu Kham copper-gold operation located in Laos People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) is owned and operated by Phu Bia Mining Limited. PanAust Limited, based in Brisbane Australia, holds a 90 per cent interest in Phu Bia Mining Limited, with the remaining 10 per cent held by the Government of Laos PDR.The 12Mt/y copper-gold concentrator at Phu Kham commenced production in April 2008. Flotation copper and gold recovery from commissioning was consistently poor, due to the high levels of pyrite and problematic secondary and oxide copper species and non-sulfide gangue.The low recoveries of copper and gold from Phu Kham were recognised during the feasibility study design phase. A bulk sulfide flotation regime in roughing produced high recoveries, however a large capacity cleaning circuit was required and there was risk of not meeting saleable concentrate grade specifications. The installed design offered a capital efficient compromise to ensure that a concentrate grade of 24% copper could be achieved at acceptable recoveries.Incremental improvements in copper recovery were achieved by 2011 through conversion of conditioning cells to flotation cells in both roughing and first cleaning and increased cleaner capacity through the installation of a Jameson cell. In 2012 the Phu Kham Upgrade Project was commissioned to increase mill throughput, along with additional rougher and cleaner capacity to increase residence times at the nominal 16 Mt/y throughput. The marginal reduction in primary grind size due to the additional ball milling power also provided a small recovery improvement.This paper presents the development, design, implementation, and performance of the Increased Recovery Project commissioned in April 2013 which targeted the major causes of copper loss from the circuit. Based on fundamental and detailed test work and mineralogical analysis of concentrator streams, an optimised design was developed which has increased copper and gold recoveries by over 5% and 10% respectively. The Increased Recovery Project has positioned the concentrator to process high pyrite ores that were previously considered untreatable, and opened further opportunities for maximising flotation recovery by de-bottlenecking plant regrind and cleaning capacity.CITATION:Hoyle, A, Bennett, D and Walker, P, 2015. The demand for environmentally friendly commercial explosives has increased globally due to concerns regarding environmentally friendly mining activities. Ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO) and bulk emulsion explosives (BEE) are two kinds of civil explosives primarily used in coal and mineral mining in Indonesia. Indonesia is one of the leading countries in coal and mineral mining production and export, with abundant resources; therefore, the consumption of civil explosives such as ANFO and BEE is enormous. The selection and evaluation of commercial explosives are mostly done on the commercial and technical side, and no assessment is made based on environmental aspects. This preliminary study evaluates the economic value and environmental burden of greenhouse gas emissions produced by ANFO and BEE and determines which type of explosives is more environmentally friendly. The combination of environmental and economic indicators, eco-efficiency (E/E), was selected to investigate BEE’s economic and environmental performance compared to ANFO. The life cycle of greenhouse gas emissions of BEE and AN was determined using previously available studies and simple calculations. The cost of the product or explosives was used to represent the economic value. The E/E results showed that environmental and economic sustainability could be enhanced using BEE.

The zinc industry is dominated by the electrolytic zinc (EZ) process. The EZ process has a low tolerance for impurities, resulting in tight concentrate specifications. Many mining companies sacrifice zinc recovery in order to meet smelter specifications. Some have ore-bodies that cannot be economically developed because too much metal has to be sacrificed, or it is just not possible to meet the specification. The BUKA Zinc Process (BZP) has been developed as a method of producing high-quality zinc from a wide range of concentrates. It can have lower capital and operating costs than the conventional zinc and lead production routes. Advantages accrue from increases in metal recovery during concentrating, smelting and refining; the elimination of most of the capital and operating costs associated with lead smelting; reduced transport costs; lower zinc refining costs; reduced refinery residue disposal costs; and reduced future environmental liabilities. This paper describes results of testwork that has been undertaken to demonstrate the viability of the BZP on both test rig and laboratory-bench scale.

There are many different challenges when sampling mineral commodities. Sampling is part of many decision-making processes, from control of the number of drops of a reagent to all aspects involved in determining how much to pay for a mineral consignment. However, if all decisions must be supported by correct assumptions, or at least agreed terms, how can this be guaranteed? The main approach is to emphasise the importance of continuous surveying of sampling practices. If they are based on non-recommended protocols, this raises concerns. In addition, safety failures and lack of appropriate behaviour from the technical perspective can lead to disasters, both from the human and business perspectives. Impacts on safety and health are clearly unacceptable. It should be noted that imperfect safety and health practices in sampling operations have a strange correlation with incorrect sampling techniques. The commercial interface can also be affected. Companies have studied extensively the various aspects of measuring quality parameters for mineral commodities to understand the risks for investors and owners, and they take decisions that fundamentally respect the interests of parties in contracts and not result in losses. Every result should be obtained in defensible ways, and neither losses nor profits taken in indefensible ways. Most of such situations are related to bias; a significant systematic difference between a measured value and a reference value for a contractual quality parameter. Bias is always undesirable, because it always implies an incorrect advantage for one party and without doubt an undesired disadvantage for the other party. These situations are solved financially through a third-party arbitrator becoming involved in delicate situations, such as a commercial claim, but the outcome is always tangibly or intangibly bad for one of the parties. Another possibility is a permanent or temporary loss of precision. Poor precision, due its nature, generates reasonably balanced losses and profits, but it may hide out-of-control situations, generate instability and induce financial losses due to actions taken towards clearing commercial disputes involving interlaboratory programs, sample exchanges and duplicated sampling and sample preparation procedures, in the end wasting time and resources and creating a permanent source of commercial tension. While bias situations demand immediate adjustments for correctness, poor precision has to be understood as something that cannot be just calibrated out and is a situation that demands investment of time and effort. Precision optimisation has to take into account best practice for obtaining the required precision as well as cost/benefit analysis studies. Purchasers, engineers, salesmen and all personnel need to recognise that sampling is a major area to understand when taking decisions. The aim is to spread concepts that can really help, such as simple in-house actions to improve productivity and completion of surveys on commercial sampling operations, in order to ensure correct results are obtained and assertively take corrective actions, thereby establishing a healthy relationship with investors, suppliers and purchasers and in the process optimising the business.

"An Outotec e500 TankCell, with 500 m³ of actual flotation volume, was commissioned at the Kevitsa Cu-Ni-PGE concentrator in northern Finland during 2014. This flotation cell was implemented at the head of the existing copper circuit as the first Cu rougher flotation cell. This was the first flotation cell of this size to be run under production conditions by any supplier anywhere in the world.The cell has been in continuous operation since start-up in October 2014 and has provided improvements in metallurgical performance at very low specific power consumption. On average, the cell has recovered 71 per cent of copper contained in the 0.37 per cent Cu flotation feed at a concentrate grade of 17 per cent Cu. The specific power consumption for the cell (excluding blower power) is typically around 0.4 kW/m³.After start-up, the impeller speed and superficial gas velocity were varied and the impact on metallurgical performance measured. In this paper a review of the cell operation at Kevitsa is given. Bow-tie analysis is a commonly used tool in the Major Hazard Facility sector to identify, display and control risks that have the potential to pose serious harm to personnel. It is a simple but powerful risk management tool that displays traditional risk assessment outputs as easily interpreted ‘bow-tie diagrams’. These are an effective and versatile communication format that can be applied to any type of risk (eg safety, environmental, assets etc) and as such show great benefit in managing operational hazards in mining.

"This paper presents preliminary results of ongoing research being carried out at the University of New South Wales Australia (UNSW) into improved methods for estimating rock mass strength. In this paper the rock mass strength of Hawkesbury Sandstone is assessed. An estimate is first made based on an extensive database of intact rock strength data being collated by the author and the assumption that rock mass strength can be determined following the geological strength-index (GSI) approach. The resulting strength envelope is then compared with nine documented case studies where stress induced failure has occurred in tunnels excavated within Hawkesbury Sandstone. The case studies cover a range of conditions: construction dates from 1880s to 2006 spans from 3.2 to 12.5 m depths from 17 to 124 m excavation methods of drill and blast, roadheader and tunnel boring machine (TBM).Finite element modelling is used to assess the likely magnitudes of the principal stresses that were present at the time of the failures. The finite element models are interrogated to provide the values of major and minor principal stresses in and around the mapped failure zones. Failure and stable points are then compared to the proposed strength envelope(s) of Hawkesbury Sandstone derived using the Hoek-Brown and the spalling criteria. The ability of the Hoek-Brown rock mass strength criterion to differentiate between the ‘failed’ and ‘stable’ zones is considered to be remarkable.CITATION:Bertuzzi, R, 2014. In a survey conducted by symplexi with underground miners in Australia; 78 per cent of participants believed that ‘safety’ is all about people. If ‘safety’ is about people, then is the mining industry focusing on the wrong thing? It would be fair to say that the mining industry is heavily systems focused. Companies develop a safety management system and use this to show regulators that they comply with legislation – however, that is only half of the picture.

We all live in professional silos û comfort zones, where we talk to like-minded people with the same training, experience and view of the world. We note in passing the existence of other disciplines, but they are tolerated rather than embraced. To the geologist, the metallurgist is a mad scientist conjuring gold out of some foul solution about which the less said the better. To the metallurgist, the geologist is a bearded, self-appointed sage who guesses what is under our feet by sniffing the air, and drives a Land Rover badly. As to the view of mining engineers held by both geologists and metallurgists, this is best left to the imagination. And of course we are all confused by the term æmetallurgistÆ. I am called a metallurgist though my skills are in mineral processing not metal processing, but I canÆt be called a mineralogist because that definition is already taken. *Please note that this is available as an extended abstract only*

In process industries, time-dependent random fluctuations of raw material characteristics and mass flow rates in bulk material or pulp flows cannot be always prevented for different reasons, eg because of the geological situation (no uniform formation of the deposit) or/and because of technological reasons (segregation in bunkers or on stockpiles). Since a long time, there has been practical experiences that such fluctuations can have negative consequences, eg: ò fluctuations of the final products characteristics, ò higher expenditure for process control, and ò worsening of technological characteristics (recovery, sharpness of separation etc). In the literature, there can be found a lot of details as to, eg the improvement of the sharpness of separation in a jig in dependence on the raw material blending (Kubitza, 1981; Gathen, 1983) or the decreasing flotation recovery with increasing raw material characteristics fluctuations in iron and potash ore processing plants (Bubnova, 1978). Up to now, however, these consequences of random fluctuations, eg on the separation efficiency were not predictable theoretically. It could be shown by means of the general model for mechanical macroprocesses (Graichen, 1989), that the reduction of input fluctuations passing a blending facility can be calculated in this way. In this example, the steady state of the process is the wanted one, but, in general, the model is able to describe also non-steady states of the process regarded. On the other hand, the general model of mechanical macroprocesses has been used successfully for modelling separation processes, eg cross-flow and air classification (Molerus, 1969; Neesse, 1991; Senden, 1979; Tichonov, 1973). That is why it was tried to model the influence of input fluctuations on the separation efficiency, that means, the impact of non-steady states - as a consequence of random fluctuations - on a separation process. The models discussed in the literature are related nearly exclusive to the steady state of the process. The reasons for that lie in the (relative) simplicity of the models and the fact that the steady state is aimed at by means of blending processes under practical conditions - because of the advantages mentioned above. These models cited have proved to be superior to other models, since the basic general model for mechanical macropocesses makes possible the consideration of turbulence acting in the process unit and influencing the separation process essentially. This is valid also for modelling the turbulent cross flow classification, applied to mechanical classifiers and hydrocyclones, where the correspondence between the separation characteristics (cut size, separation sharpness) calculated and determined experimentally is much better than for other models.

The introduction of Progressive Closure and Rehabilitation Plans (PCRPs) in Queensland from 2019 places greater importance on planning and implementation of mine rehabilitation activities. The progress and outcomes of progressive rehabilitation activities is monitored and reported upon to demonstrate success in achieving progress towards the approved post-mining landform, and to inform corrective action where required. The requirements of PCRPs place additional emphasis on mine sites to quantify the risks of successfully achieving planned outcomes. This is particularly challenging given mined-land rehabilitation is a complex process involving decisions on multiple inter-acting management interventions, climatic conditions and spatially variable site characteristics.

In addressing a short-term operational need for the relocation of a tailings storage facility reclaim pond, a mine has achieved a host of water management objectives. Through effective planning and adoption of a strategic æwhole of mine lifeÆ approach, the mine has achieved significant environmental, social and economic benefits. A review of all water management aspects across the site identified a host of other interrelated water issues and concerns which, if dealt with individually, would prove too costly for individual operational departments. When considered as a whole, however, the issues became opportunities and provided the stimulus for integration of the site water management system. The development of site water and solute balance models provided the tool by which a number of water management options/strategies could be evaluated. The conceptual design and costing of the proposed water infrastructure further facilitated the evaluation of the multiple benefits to be gained from each option. A business case could then be made to mine management for the preferred option. The recommended water management strategy finally recommended to the mine not only provided a tailings storage facility (TSF) reclaim pond, but also provided for:increased wastewater recovery from the TSF, the capture of all waste rock dump run-off, additional water harvesting from local creeks, increased wastewater reuse, improved environmental water management, infrastructure that could be used by the local community after mine closure, and overall cost savings. This paper illustrates how effective water management planning can provide both short-term economic and environmental benefits, as well as long-term social benefits.

The sole reason for a mine to exist is to extract the finite mineral resource. Accurate grade control is critical to the economics of any mine. If grade control is not optimised, then no matter how good the downstream processes are, the full potential of the operation will not be realised. The detailed implementation of grade control varies but typically consists of sampling and assaying to determine the location of the ore zones. A lot of time, money and effort are spent defining the location of the ore as accurately as possible à but then it is blown up! The effect that blasting has on grade control is rarely adequately accounted for when the rock is excavated because there has never been an accurate and practical method for measuring blast movement. This paper draws on over six years of research into measuring and understanding blast movement, which started at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) of the University of Queensland. The research has made a unique contribution to open pit blasting by helping to develop a practical tool for measuring blast movement, which was then used to improve the understanding of three-dimensional blast movement dynamics. However, these achievements would be of largely academic interest without taking the final step of using this technology and knowledge to account for blast movement by translating the ore polygons in response to the measured movement vectors. This paper provides an overview of blast movement but focuses on one site where blast movement was measured during three separate periods, with significantly different orientation of the mineralisation on each occasion. The theoretical ore loss varied from nine per cent to 24 per cent. The differences are primarily due to the orientation of the ore polygons relative to the direction of movement. The optimum grade control solution is a combination of accurately accounting for blast movement and designing appropriate blasts.

The Konongo Gold Project is located on the western margin of the 125 Moz Ashanti Gold Belt in Ghana, West Africa. It is situated 60 km along strike of the world-class mineral system at Obuasi and is interpreted to lie on the same controlling regional shear system.The project is operated by Signature Metals, a subsidiary of the Liongold Corporation, and is managed and funded by the Liongold Corporation.Historic underground operations at Konongo produced 1.6 Moz Au at a head grade of 11.8 g/t Au, from eight operations spread along 16 km of the shear system. Mining focused almost exclusively on free-milling gold in quartz, ignoring the gold-bearing sulfide mineralisation associated with the quartz veins. Underground mining ceased in 1986.In 2013, Signature Metals re-focused the program at Konongo to assess the viability of mining the sulfide ore sustainably. This led to the first campaign review of the historic underground data and resource potential since mine closure. The Obenemase mine was the first of the eight operations to be assessed as part of this campaign.Large amounts of legacy data have survived for Obenemase and several historic resource estimations have been completed based on these data. The data typically consisted of hand-drawn sections and plans, and ledgers of commonly incomplete drilling and sampling data. Some drill core have been lost over time, but a large amount of quarter-core and half-core as well as pulps and rejects are still available. Previous resource estimates had a low confidence value because all the available assay and geological data were integrated effectively with the estimates, resulting in a lack of understanding of both grade and geological continuity.This project built a new geological model for Obenemase that greatly enhances the understanding of the controls on mineralisation using a thorough approach of re-surveying, re-cataloguing and re-logging. This model led to an increased degree of confidence and a subsequent upgrade of resource classification, and created several previously unrecognised strong exploration targets. Owing to the number of chemical processes now in use for the separation of metals from their ores, and the consequent employment of chemicals at the mine, it is sometimes necessary to be able to produce them on the spot. This particularlyapplies to sulphuric acid which may be required for the manufacture of chlorine and of sulphate of copper, or for the treatment of'sulphides and other purposes. It can be made from brimstone for rather less than £3 per ton, but when delivered to any distance from the works, the cost of packages and other charges would amount to more than the value of the acid.I hope therefore, that to any of the members of the Institute who may find it necessary to make sulphuric acid for their own requirements an outline of the process, and some details of the plant etc may be useful, and perhaps lead to their devising improvements, mechanical or otherwise. Though acid can be made from pyrites in Europe for about 15/- per ton, it is probable that for most metaIIurgical purposes the quantity required. and the uncertainty as to how long it would be needed, would make it advisable to spend as little as possible on plant, and so use brimstone, though more expensive, I have therefore given no details of pyrites burning, which is very fully treated by Prof, Lunge in his work on " Sulphuric Acid and Alkali."

This paper details a proposal for integrating the use of the Pilbara Iron Ore Classification (PIOC) and stratigraphic data for fine tuning blast. pattern design on Mt Whaleback. The main thrust of the proposal is based on the assertion from Haqan and Harries (1979) that rock properties influence blasting results more than explosive properties. This premise is supported by a literature search, which indicated that blasthole burden, spacing, stemming and subdepth lengths are also determined by rock properties if the same explosive and blasthole diameters are used. A brief explanation of the PIOC is provided during which it is noted that the classification is based on physical hardness, mineralogical and genetic characteristics of the ore. The classification also extends to the two main waste rock types LBIF (banded iron-formation) and shale]. Ore type plans produced from face mapping indicate that many areas on Mt Whaleback can be divided into various PIOC zones and regions thus making it more useful in blast pattern design. Several recommendations for blast pattern design experimentation are made for hard, medium and soft ores as well as for the waste rocks, the most important being the use of expanded patterns to blast. soft BIF and medium hard to soft shales.

Exploration and mining title administration in the Northern Territory has changed dramatically over the last 20 years. These changes have occurred due to legislative amendments, technological developments, and the changing face of the mining industry. The first legislation to control mining in the Northern Territory was the Northern Territory Gold Mining Act (1873) of South Australia. In 1911, control of the Northern Territory was passed from South Australia to the Commonwealth. As a result of the mining boom which followed the discovery of gold in Tennant Creek in 1932, the Commonwealth passed the Mining Ordinance of 1939. This legislation was amended 39 times and stayed in force until July 1982, when the self-governing Northern Territory passed the Mining Act 1980. This Act is still in force and is continuously under review. The first computerised mining titles system, REGIS, was created in 1984/85 and was, to all intents and purposes, just a computerised index. Various modifications ensued, and in 1989 the Titles Database was unveiled. The database has developed to be one of the most sophisticated yet user-friendly mining titles databases in Australia. In excess of 50 companies have access to the database from their own offices. Work continues on its development and fine-tuning. The paper outlines the development of the database since inception.
