Energy studies have been undertaken at a number of open coal mines in the Hunter valley. A range of energy efficiency benchmarks and targets have been established, which, when applied across coal mines, will assist in leading to a significant improvement in energy efficiency in the coal mining industry in NSW, thereby leading to an improvement in environmental performance. Typically, energy efficiency improvements of 20 per cent and higher appear possible at many mines leading to a commensurate reduction in this controllable operating cost, ie energy. On the basis that annual energy costs and net profit are similar for many mines, a reduction in energy costs by 20 per cent will lead to increase of 20 per cent in net profit.

As the theme of this conference is æRediscover OtagoÆ it would seem appropriate to revisit the era of the gold rushes and subsequent mining industry which rapidly advanced settlement and economic prosperity for Otago, and left permanent reminders in the form of historic mining sites, many of which are now encompassed within the Otago Goldfields Park. I have been invited to give a paper at this conference on the subject of æHistoric Goldfields of Central OtagoÆ. As well as having a working involvement with historic areas through my employment with the Department of Conservation, I have a personal interest in the early goldmining industry of Central Otago as my grandfather came out from Scotland in the 1890s to help construct gold dredges on the Molyneux. My grandfather made headlines in the local paper in 1920 when he believed he saw a New Zealand otter at Island Block near Beaumont - but that's another conservation trail that I will not pursue any further today! For this paper I intend to divide my time to cover the following topics. Firstly, I would like to sketch a mental picture of the characteristics that make up the Central Otago landscape, and the general perception that early miners must have had when viewing this foreign land. Then I would like to briefly discuss the changes and the consequences in the early gold rush to Central. Finally, I would like+ to discuss the establishment of the Otago Goldfields Park, which I will illustrate with several slides.

Many maintenance managers find it difficult to justify investments in maintenance improvement initiatives. In part, this is due to a tendency by mine managers to regard maintenance purely as a cost centre, and not as a process able to influence productive capacity and profit. It is also hindered by a lack of alignment between commonly used maintenance performance measures and key business drivers, and the lack of formal business training amongst maintenance professionals. With this in mind, a model to assist maintenance managers in evaluating the benefits of maintenance improvement projects was recently formulated. The model considers four cost saving dimensions. These are: 1. reduction in the cost of unplanned repairs and maintenance,2. increased or accelerated production and/or sales,3. spares inventory reduction, and4. reduction in over-investment in physical assets and operating costs. This paper discusses the application of this model and a number of numerical examples are given to justify investments in maintenance improvement projects having varying objectives.

Capital expenditure on sampling and blending is often very difficult to justify. The costs are easy to estimate but the benefits likely to be obtained by constructing good sampling and blending facilities are generally difficult to estimate. For instance, improving blending of the ore feed to a smelter would improve throughput, yield and controllability ... but by how much? Similarly, better sampling would allow processing conditions to be dynamically adjusted and would improve extraction ... but by how much? Predicting benefits often requires the use of simulation models which carefully distinguish between true grades, predicted grades and observed grades. The parameters of these simulation models must often be estimated from rather inadequate information. These difficulties are illustrated using three scenarios.

In non-ferrous metal mining operations, it is generally necessary to crush and grind the ore to a very fine particle size to effectively liberate the contained mineral from the host rock. Fragmentation by blasting is the first stage of this comminution process.Numerous studies and independent modelling of the Mine to Mill process have demonstrated the potential for significant downstream productivity improvements from improved blast fragmentation. However, safety and environmental constraints associated with the blasting process usually limit the extent to which blast energy or powder factor can be increased.An effective blasting solution has been identified that enables the safe utilisation of powder factors several times higher than those used conventionally to provide significant improvements in fragmentation. The solution uses a static ‘blanket’ of broken rock overlying the blast to contain this increased blast energy and control rock movement. To produce this broken layer of rock, the subdrill in each blast is significantly increased to preblast (or precondition) the entire stemming region of subsequent blasts on the next mining bench.The solution has been evaluated at a large open cut poly-metallic mine in Mexico. Results from the application of this technique have shown significant improvement in run-of-mine fragmentation, with subsequent downstream productivity improvement indicated.CITATION:Hawke, S J and Dominguez, L A, 2015. Soil improvement technologies have been widely employed over the recent decades to overcome tunnelling problems in difficult grounds, their range of application growing proportionally to the technological development. The constant advancement in the different mechanical (flexible and more powerful equipment) and electronic (enhanced reliability and direct quality control) aspects of these technologies, fostered the confidence of engineers and tunnellers and, ultimately, allowed the entire tunnel industry to approach difficult excavations in a safer and cost effective manner.This paper outlines the main features of commercially available soil improvement techniques, with particular emphasis on permeation grouting and jet grouting. These two technologies, developed concurrently in Europe and Japan, and there customarily adopted in the design of underground structures, have known extensive and extreme applications worldwide in recent years. Case histories and current practice of soil improvement techniques, as they apply to tunnelling, are also rendered.

The conventional approach to the disposal of fine coal mine tailings, which involves piping the tailings as an aqueous slurry to a storage where they remain in the form of a permanent wet deposit, is becoming unacceptable. This approach is a legacy of a "contain and forget" mentality, which has economic advantages only in the short term. In the longer term, wet tailings deposits occupy large areas of land and present extreme rehabilitation difficulties. Alternative tailings disposal systems, which are sustainable and which facilitate rehabilitation, are required. The possible alternatives include the mechanical dewatering of fine tailings prior to disposal in combination with coarse reject, tailings disposal into spoil pile valleys, and the combined pumping to disposal of tailings and coarse reject. The most appropriate choice of fine tailings disposal strategy will vary from mine site to mine site. The chosen strategy should be optimised to meet increasingly stringent environmental requirements, within the constraints imposed by each mine. The alternative approaches represent significant departures from past practices, and require considerable industry driven research and development before they can be adopted with confidence. All three alternatives involve mixing of the fine tailings and coarse waste streams, aimed at creating a mixture of reasonable engineering properties. Understanding the engineering behaviour of such mixtures is central to the success of these alternative disposal strategies.

In 2019 the Chinese Ministry of Ecology and Environment issued guidelines promoting the implementation of ultra-low emissions in the iron and steelmaking industry. These guidelines aim to drive improvements in air quality through the reduction of particulate matter (PM), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx). Secondly, it also represents an initial means to commence decarbonisation of the industry. The ultra-low emissions guidelines propose that well over 80 per cent of China’s production capacity will achieve these targets by 2025. In response, many sintering operations have implemented numerous improvements to the process that result in significant efficiency gains. Of note is the adoption of deep bed sintering where, with some modifications to equipment, the sintering bed depth is increased resulting in sizable reductions of SO2 and NOx emissions. This paper will also provide an overview of the requirements to introduce deep-bed sintering into an operation and highlight test work completed which quantifies the resultant reduction in emissions.

The End of the Line for Roadway Development By Michael Kelly, CSIRO Exploration & Mining Michael Kelly highlighted that roadway development performance remains one of the threats to expansion of Australia underground coal exports to the growing Asian market. In a recent industry study, automation was highlighted as one of seven strategies for roadway development improvement. Growing Asian markets The expansion of the Asian coal market is a long term driver for expansion of the underground coal industry in Australia - if significant productivity improvements are made. Imports of steaming coal by Asian APEC members are predicted to rise by from 150 MT to 190 MT. Australia is one of the few countries which has a potential capacity larger than predicted internal needs. Predictions are for exports of black steaming coal from Australia to increase from 50.3 MT in 1992 to 106.3 MT in 2010. To meet this prediction, an investment of $10.7 billion (in 1992 dollars) will have to be made in mining and transport facilities. This is equivalent to the opening of a major new mine each year until 2010. Many of these mines will be underground operations. However, much of Australia's capacity to respond to increased Asian demand will depend on its ability to develop underground technologies and improve productivity. The inability to make sustained improvements in roadway development rates has to date been one of the main reasons why new underground projects have failed to deliver the expected returns.

The past few years has seen a concerted effort to improve the recovery of gold along with its co-product copper from the æhigh-gradeÆ Ridgeway concentrator at Newcrest Mining LtdÆs Cadia Valley Operations. A number of initiatives were identified and implemented, culminating in a sustained improvement in recovery of approximately three to four per cent for both metals. The key projects that contributed to this improvement included the installation of a 355 kW Metso stirred media detritor (SMD) to create a regrind circuit, installation of froth crowders on the scavenger circuit, installation of a Falcon SB2500SE gravity concentrator as part of the regrind circuit to improve gold recovered to bullion on-site and the optimisation of the grinding circuit to reduce the 80 per cent passing size (P80) of the primary grind from 160 to 121 ¦m for the same throughput via process control, cyclone and ball charge optimisation. This paper will focus on the supporting test work, where applicable, that was used as the design basis for the project, but more importantly the plant data before and after the changes to clearly identify the improvements to plant recovery.

Improvements in the drill and blast process can impact on loader performance in a number of ways. The main effects being improved loading cycle times, less non-productive cycles such as oversize removal, clean-up and face raking and better bucket fill factors. The impact of improved loading cycle times on the overall cost and productivity of the load and haul cycle is very much dependent on the loader truck match and the management of the haul fleet. Previous work has shown that a 20 per cent improvement in dig cycle times may only lead to three per cent or less improvement in the overall productivity of the load and haul process. However, improving the mass loaded per pass by five per cent will lead to a five per cent improvement in productivity for any given haul fleet situation, assuming sufficient truck capacity. Work by Orica Explosives at Lab ChrysotileÆs Thetford Mine, Quebec, Canada showed a relationship between muckpile fragmentation and truck payload. With this in mind, work was carried out to determine the effect differing muckpile fragmentation distributions can have on excavator bucket fill factors. This work was performed in the laboratory to a 1:100 scale. Nine different distributions were used. These were characterised by the Rosin Rammler parameters, xc the characteristic size, and n, the uniformity index. The values of xc and n used were modelled on those previously measured at a Sydney quarry. For the range of distributions measured, it was found that the fill factors were lowest at a low characteristic size and a high uniformity index and highest at a high characteristic size and a low uniformity index. In other words the best fill factors were achieved with a more dispersed muckpile distribution with a larger characteristic size. The difference in fill factors was 16 per cent indicating that controlling the drill and blast process to produce a specific muckpile distribution can have a significant impact on the overall cost-efficiency and productivity of the load and haul process. Field measurement by Orica Explosives at a quarry in Canada supports this conclusion showing improvements of up to seven per cent in average bucket load by either increasing the characteristic size or decreasing the uniformity index of the muckpile.

Improving the performance and reducing the costs associated with export logistics chains is critical to the competitiveness of export coal mines. The fundamental practices associated with the use of export logistics chains made up of mine, trucking, rail and port operations are being challenged by the advent of third party operators on rail systems and the use of the Internet.Whilst individual mines can improve their processes to drive down their mining costs, they face major challenges in their endeavour to improve the performance of export logistics chains and reduce the significant logistics costs of moving coal from the mine to export ships, via the shared infrastructure of rail systems and ports. There is an increasing realisation that global competition is not only between mines but between coal export regions that are defined by their rail system and ports infrastructure.

As part of a general review of processing double refractory ores through Barrick GoldÆs autoclaves /carbon-in-leach (CIL) facility at Goldstrike, a study was made to evaluate the use of surfactants for reducing the loss of gold during cyanide leaching of preg-robbing gold ores. Consistent improvement of gold recovery was observed with surfactants at various testing conditions. Clyde Materials Handling (CMH) and WorleyParsons have developed a concept for a flash furnace feed system using the specialist pneumatic conveying equipment expertise of CMH and the flash furnace process experience of WorleyParsons. CMH has developed a proprietary volumetric feeder (called a Rotofeed), which is extremely accurate and overcomes many of the problems inherent with loss-in-weight screw feeders and drag chain conveyors, previously regarded as state-of-the-art. Initial indications are that the Clyde-WorleyParsons feed system could deliver the following benefits to flash furnace operation: accurate pulseless delivery of feed material to the head of the burner leading to improved combustion performance and process stability; highly accurate split to the individual quadrants of a conventional burner tube, or provision of a smooth hollow curtain to a burner without guide vanes; decreased pressure pulsation in the furnace due to improved combustion control and performance; and decreased temperature fluctuations in the furnace due to improved combustion characteristics and hence reductions in refractory thermal stress and wear.

The potential for bulk diversion was identified and quickly implemented following the development of bulk sensing technologies applied to conveyed flows. In the early 1980s real time analysis of ash in coal was intended to improve the understanding and control of quality variability. By the end of the 1980s approximately 5% of coal analysers installed were being utilised for bulk sorting; diverting flows to create stockpiles to improve blending flexibility and boiler feed consistency, diverting waste material, or bypassing the beneficiation process when the coal met product quality criteria. In the 1990s bulk sensing and sorting utilising natural gamma detection was applied to conveyed waste in gold-uranium mineralisation and allowed ore to be recovered and processed that would otherwise have been discarded. Further applications developed in the iron ore sector where product quality ore could be diverted to bypass beneficiation and save significant unnecessary processing costs and improve recovery by avoiding process inefficiency losses. Plant capacity was freed up to be utilised by material that required processing. Similar benefits became evident in the phosphate industry and in base metals where multi-elemental analysis using Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis provides ideal opportunities to representatively measure 30 second conveyed increments at high accuracies. This has been successfully adopted in copper, nickel, platinum and lead-zinc to improve waste removal after primary crushing to eliminate unnecessary expense and improve plant efficiency. The benefits include increased output from existing operating capacity, significant reductions in consumable costs and generation of fewer detrimental waste streams. The paper outlines the technologies and discusses case studies covering the above commodities, demonstrating the immense value that representative real time measurement of conveyed flows can create. Measurement data concurrently provides multiple benefits in operational performance besides sorting, through ore reconciliation, ore blending, feedforward control and metal accounting, adding further value.

Blue Mountain Minerals is a large supplier of calcium carbonate products used by various manufacturers as a major raw material. Very small amounts of free carbon in the rock can have a huge impact in carbon-sensitive applications. The marble in the deposit at Blue Mountain Minerals contains variable amounts of free carbon in the form of trace amounts of the mineral graphite.To make quality improvements, variography was used to measure the impact of non-ideal sampling practices at the Blue Mountain Minerals operations in Columbia, California in the United States. A major investment in correct sampling systems and sampling protocols was implemented over a one-year period. Subsequent variography was used to measure the improvement on the predictability of the graphite content in marble produced by the quarry and as it is processed as an acceptable raw material for extremely carbon-sensitive applications. The improvements of the sampling protocols, control of long-range changes and better knowledge of process cycles are easily noticeable on variograms when they happen to exist. As the mining industry faces times of change, new challenges arise to ensure raw material supply for the younger and future generations. Different scenarios are currently shaping the way we mine and teach mining engineering. Led by an increasing demand for raw materials, net zero requirements for improving long-term operation performance, technological advancements such as automation and digitalisation, safety improvements, environmental considerations and a need for social acceptance, mining is pursuing to change and adapt to these requirements at a faster pace. Such changing times raise new concerns, one of the most relevant is the lower number of students interested or enrolling in mining engineering and related fields leaving mining engineering as one of the less preferred career options between the younger generations. Nonetheless, it is essential to continue addressing and supplying the skill sets that is suited to contemporary and future of the mining industry. To this end, globally, academia is currently undergoing several initiatives such as curricula updates and adaptation, up skilling, improving teaching practices and techniques, including e-learning techniques, enhancing industry-academia and inter-university collaboration, and much more
