Paste backfill has been adopted by many underground mines in North America and a growing number elsewhere. Paste offers a number of advantages. This paper suggests wider applications of paste technology to surface tailings disposal and water management. Advantages include improved overall stability, potentially easier permitting, smaller water inventory and earlier reclamation. It may be feasible to use the same plant to prepare backfill and to dispose of surplus tailings. Example cost models are given to illustrate potential applications.

Sintering of lead-zinc concentrates is practised by Sulphide Corporation to provide both desulfurised lump sinter feed, for simultaneous reduction to zinc and lead in the Imperial Smelting Process blast furnace, and sulfur dioxide gas for sulfuric acid manufacture.Moisture control of feed mixes is of paramount importance in the sintering operation and improvements in this area have realised increases in overall plant performance.

Since January 2019, BHP Olympic Dam have been trialling the use of a drone based LiDAR mapping system for the purpose for surveying stope voids. This new technology utilises Simultaneous Location and Mapping (SLAM) algorithm providing positioning, stability and collision avoidance in GPS denied environments. Implementation of this system utilised underground personnel trained in the equipment’s use. The study’s intention was to evaluate the effectiveness of this equipment versus traditional surveying methods in regards to quality, safety and productivity. The trial results showed a marked improvement in the quality, productivity and personnel safety when conducting surveys. The use of the drone and LiDAR system reduced personnel and equipment requirements for surveys, thus allowing these resources to be deployed elsewhere. The technology’s simple and rapid deployment allowed multiple surveys to be conducted during a 12 hour shift, including ad-hoc work with minimal disruption to underground operations. After the drone’s initial trial, further work was conducted to utilise the Hovermap LiDAR scanner on other platforms to increase utilisation. A mounting system was created allowing the LiDAR to be mounted on a remotely operated loader or vehicle. This enabled drawpoint scans to be taken directly after production completion, resulting in faster stope close outs and drive scans for convergence monitoring. Implementation of the LiDAR system has resulted in improvements in the stope production cycle by reducing delays previously associated with data capture. The increase in the volume and quality of data has also allowed in-depth back-analysis of stopes in new mining areas to be conducted, which have driven improvements in the design process.

Long-hole drilling technology has rapidly advanced this decade beginning with rotary drilling/pump down camera surveying and culminating in down-hole motor drilling with cableless electronic surveying over the past two years. With the latter system, a high level of directional control is achievable in boreholes up to 1000m long. Past long-hole drilling across the industry has seen a mixture of success and failure. With these experiences, new and improved techniques and equipment have evolved. A number of long-hole drilling options are available as variations on the basic rotary and down-hole motor methods. They involve different levels of cost and equipment and vary in their suitability in different geological environments and definition of targets. Long-hole drilling is mainly target applied, either in defining geological structures in greater detail, or proving important mining areas such as longwall blocks, to be free of structures. Successful drilling hinges on a combination of drilling expertise, quality and appropriateness of equipment, understanding of geological conditions and good colliery support. Drilling expertise forms part of sound interpretation through keeping relevant records, understanding the reasons for changes in drilling conditions and implementing specific tests such as coring. The final interpretation builds upon all other available geological information. There is still scope for research into improved techniques and equipment. The use of long boreholes for geophysical surveys has high potential.

Semi-arid regions suffer from two afflictions; evaporation may exceed precipitation by multiples of two or more and variations in precipitation can be both extreme and difficult to predict. Many Australian mines are situated in semi-arid areas where communities are reliant upon locally sourced water or special purpose infrastructure is built as part of the mine construction. As the question of climate change looms, issues related to future water supply and sustainable water management become increasingly important. Across Australia several mining operations co-exist in a single surface water and/or groundwater catchment area. The management of water on a mine by mine or a community by community basis is illogical and must be reconsidered based on a single water catchment and a whole-of-community basis. Mine water should be considered on a full life cycle basis where the quality is assessed for specific mine site applications. This paper addresses technical challenges that include surface water and groundwater supply in semi-arid regions, operational water in the mining industry, beneficial uses of water, water economics and demand management. In much the same way as emissions trading evolved into a multi-stakeholder forum, mining regions offer scope for innovative thinking in water supply and reuse. In addition, this paper considers a number of initiatives taken by Australian mining companies that are entering a prefeasibility stage and contrasts these initiatives against the established success within a South African mining region. The challenges and potential solutions to this initiative are presented for future consideration.

New developments are taking place in the recovery of gold from leached pulps that are based upon the adsorption of the metal cyanide species onto ion exchange resins. Despite the success of several resin-in-pulp pilot plant operations in the Western World and large-scale plants in the former Soviet Union, the process is yet to gain recognition as a viable alternative to the carbon-in-pulp process. An experimental research program has investigated the use of a variety of different types of resins for the recovery of gold, but to-date no resin studied has the desired properties of high selective loading capacity for gold cyanide and a simple inexpensive elution procedure. In addition very little is known concerning the physical strength of resins and their ability to resist shattering due to osmotic shock during cycles of adsorption and elution. The ability of ion exchange resins to enhance the leaching of refractory and re-adsorbing ores has not been investigated. This paper highlights the necessary factors that need to be addressed before commercialisation of ion exchange technology for gold extraction is feasible.

The automated measurement of rock fragmentation particle size distribution in the muck during muck excavation has been developing over the last 16 years. The introduction of stereo camera imaging of the muck has provided improved automated particle segmentation for image-based measurement algorithms. Recently, a new vision system processing algorithm has been developed. The inclusion of 2D texture in the analysis has provided a significant improvement in the definition of the finer size fractions, which has resulted in the automated analysis no longer requiring calibration.The previous stereo vision system algorithm required analysis calibration to account for poor ‘small particle’ definition in the 3D surface profile. This was because of the depth perception limitations of the stereo camera system at greater than 8 m. The new algorithm has been implemented on a number of shovel-installed vision systems, and the algorithm’s performance in automated analysis has been assessed against a diligent manual analysis of the same fragmentation images. Iron ore mining is a major source of export income for Australia. However with the decreasing reserves of high-grade, low-phosphorus hematite ore, there is mounting pressure to provide consistent mineralogical ore grade. Enhanced 3D characterisation and modelling are crucial to respond to these exigent requirements. To tackle this problem a revolutionary mine-based, imaging system (based on Visible Near Infrared û Short Wave Infrared reflectance spectroscopy û VNIR-SWIR) has been developed. This innovative, CSIRO-built prototype produces mineralogical maps that will have a major impact on ore grade characterisation. Australian iron ore companies will benefit immensely by pioneering this emerging and unique mining technology. The significance of VNIR-SWIR reflectance spectroscopy is well demonstrated with field portable spectrometers and airborne hyperspectral systems. At the mine-scale level, this newly developed imaging system will allow accurate and objective mineralogical mapping of mine faces and benches with very closely spaced sampling. These spectral mineral maps will improve deposit delineation and bring accurate and objective ore grade characterisation that will minimise drilling and enhance ore recovery. This will in turn lead to cost saving and better long-term block model planning. This system will also improve safety for mine geologists in providing mineralogical information at a distance, avoiding the need for any close contact with the mine face. The mine imaging concept is a logical response to the industry need for automatic and objective tools for sustainable and future mining practices.

Maximising margins in today's competitive international commodity markets demands superior productivity. This requires more than simply selecting the best equipment. It requires efficient production and commercial processes together with management systems recognised as international best practice. This paper introduces an integrated way of working that includes management systems for successfully changing work practices and attitudes, developing managers and increasing accountability. It provides an improvement methodology that includes systematic involvement of people in true continuous improvement of processes for maximising productivity and safety while minimising costs. Even though the principles are proven in all industry sectors worldwide, they are not always used correctly. This paper provides examples of traditional performance measurement systems to show how managers miss opportunities to control and improve both production and supporting service processes. It also describes the basic methodology for correct use of the principles and provides examples of correct implementation of modem systems in mining. The charts from actual mining case studies will be elaborated upon in the conference presentation. This paper's main aim is to provide background material for the presentation by introducing integrated principles for building best practice management systems for superior productivity and safety - for higher margins.

Tracking plant and personnel in mining operations provides multiple potential benefits for a mine including improved safety, better monitoring of production, traffic control and, in the future, monitoring and control of autonomous vehicles. The main techniques currently proposed and used for wireless tracking are radio frequency identification (RFID), signal strength based techniques and time of arrival (TOA) based techniques. RFID provide poor accuracy in the complex radio propagation environment present in mines and does not provide continuous tracking and signal strength techniques. TOA based techniques are potentially the most accurate, however, most current equipment has not realised the potential of the technique. CSIRO has been developing the Wireless Ad hoc System for Positioning (WASP) system for wireless tracking in a range of challenging environments including underground mines and surface operations, where GPS reception is compromised by depth. The system utilises a number of ‘anchor nodes’ that are placed at fixed and known locations within the mine and tags attached to the plant or personnel to be tracked. The system provides an ad hoc data communication network, thus, wired data connections are not required to the anchor nodes. WASP uses transmissions in the 5.8 GHz ISM (instrumentation, scientific and medical) frequency spectrum to perform highly accurate ranging between nodes, hence tracking of tags. The localisation performance of the system depends upon the radio propagation environment, ranging down to 0.1 m in low multipath conditions. In this paper we describe the WASP system and provide results of testing in underground and surface operations showing the system achieving high ranging, hence localisation, accuracy.

Mining is inherently a risk-based business and risk governance is an integral part of corporate assurance and business decision-making. Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves are the key assets for a minerals company and senior management/company boards require assurance regarding the likely accuracy of estimated and reported technical information. Reviews and audits improve the level of assurance in the reliability of estimated short-term (grade control) estimates, reconciliation, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves.Peer reviews and audits contribute not only to governance processes, but also provide valuable technical improvement opportunities, as well as mentoring and professional development guidance to those whose work is being reviewed. Technical review is particularly crucial at a time in the industry when companies are running lean or perhaps inexperienced teams, with limited technical or management oversight.Despite both industry guidance and some companies’ standards expecting or requiring reviews and/or audits of Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve generation and reporting processes, it is surprising how infrequently or ineffectively these are actually carried out. Examples of governance systems are presented, which include appropriate peer review processes that if effectively applied, can identify shortcomings in technical processes and provide timely correction to prevent, or mitigate against, erroneous outcomes.Peer reviews are ideally carried out concurrently with the preparation of data, selection of estimation procedures and validation of outputs from Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimation prior to the handover of results between disciplines, or the final reporting of results. Audits, on the other hand, are generally retrospective reviews by independent and/or external reviewers who rate the risks inherent with an already completed process, identifying opportunities for improvements in the future.This paper outlines the main components of peer reviews and audits, discussing how a combination of these can provide a structured and objective assurance system leading to systematic and disciplined processes to improve the effectiveness of, and confidence in, grade control, reconciliation, Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve risk management, and support good governance.CITATION:Noppé, M A, 2017. Premier Diamond Mine is planning a new, mechanised, block cave, with a production level approximately 1000 m below surface. A high degree of tunnel damage is expected, due to stress and the relatively low in situ strength of kimberlite. An evaluation of the timing of tunnel excavation, tunnel size and spacing has been carried out to define critical parameters for planning layouts and development schedules. Extensive use has been made of three-dimensional FLAC3D numerical models, calibrated against known rock mass behaviour at 650 m depth, to examine the influence of undercut advance on production level excavations. These were able to represent the effect of stress rotation on tunnels during undercut advance and the effect of an inclined undercut. The analysis has provided guidelines that are possibly applicable to any deep block cave layout. The choice of drawpoint layout is of considerably less significance than the proportion of ground extracted on the production level elevation prior to advancing the undercut. The analysis shows that damage to production development will be potentially severe if it is all excavated prior to advancing the undercut, or is mined directly beneath the undercut face. The development of the main production tunnels alone ahead of the undercut may be feasible, but no breakaways should be put in as they appear to trigger a rapid increase in the severity of damage. The optimal sequence is when all production tunnels are developed at least 10 m in plan behind the undercut, where the induced peak field stress is less than 20 MPa and a maximum support pressure of 100 to 500 kN/m2 is require to contain movement. The assessment showed that the conditions are not significantly improved by increasing drawpoint spacing from 15 m to 18 m. The vertical spacing between the undercut and production level beneath is investigated. Provided production level development is carried out beneath the undercut, there would appear to be little benefit in increasing the vertical spacing between the undercut and production level beyond the current 15 m to 18 m.

Quebec Iron Ore (QIO), a subsidiary of Champion Iron Limited (Champion), completed the restart of the Bloom Lake iron ore mine located in the heart of the Labrador Trough region of Northern Quebec, Canada in February 2018. Prior to its restart, the concentrator flow sheet underwent major upgrades which brought the iron recovery to the highest of all Labrador Trough operations. After two profitable years of production, QIO, supported by Soutex, started to look at technologies to improve its current performance and integrate into its expansion project flow sheet. From the lessons learned while optimising Phase 1, the addition of a scavenger-cleaner processing stage was identified as an improvement opportunity to increase recovery, produce a higher-grade product, and further improve the stability of concentrate quality. In 2019, the NI-43101 feasibility study for the Phase 2 expansion, aiming to double the production of high-grade iron ore concentrate, was published. Based on the metallurgical test work, the hydraulic classifier was selected to perform the scavenger-cleaning duty for its well-established performance and known behaviour at the cleaning step in the Phase 1 plant. To validate laboratory results, a pilot scavenger-cleaning hydraulic classifier was installed in Phase 1. Although the hydraulic classifier was selected for the feasibility study, metallurgical test work performed with the REFLUX® classifier showed interesting potential. It was thus decided to also install a pilot RC300 Reflux classifier at the scavenger-cleaning stage in Phase 1. Despite their apparent great similarities, the metallurgical performance was significantly different, and many dozens of sampling campaigns highlighted the different performance of both pieces of equipment considering the feed material particle size. This article presents the pilot plant results in terms of recovery, selectivity and stability for both the Reflux classifier and the hydraulic classifier operated in a scavenger-cleaner stage at the Bloom Lake iron ore concentrator.

The global mining industry is perceived to be a world leader in sustainability reporting û with a 2008 Ernst & Young survey placing four mining companies in their top five performers in sustainability reporting in South Africa. There is certainly good evidence to support this finding, but there remain many ongoing issues with respect to sustainability reporting and some important areas for improvement by mining companies globally. This paper begins with a broad (but brief) review of sustainability and the technical basis for reporting against a wide range of typical indicators or measures on the environmental aspects of mining. The various protocols, frameworks or systems are then reviewed, with a particular focus on the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and its associated mining sector supplement (including the evolution from environmental to sustainability reporting). A wide-ranging survey of reporting by mining companies is presented, including detailed analysis of 2007 and some commodity sectors over time. Examples of reported data are synthesised and analysed, focusing on their accuracy, consistency and utility for accurate assessment of the life cycle impacts for minerals and metals. A number of areas are identified for improved reporting by all mining companies, including water resources and consumption, energy consumption, process inputs (eg acids, solvents, etc), pollutant emissions, including greenhouse emissions, mine site data (not aggregate company totals) and finally rehabilitation and land status. Given the nature of mining, and considering parallels between æpeak oilÆ and the mining sector, it is critical that the state of sustainability reporting continue to evolve and improve û both in the number of companies using the GRI but also in the level and consistency of data being reported. Overall, the paper presents an important review of the present state of the art in sustainability reporting for mining, and provides a range of insights into ways to help improve reporting in the future for all mining companies.

Bacterial oxidation of sulfide minerals is a familiar and commercially available process to enhance gold recovery with problem ores. Pintail Systems, a Colorado, USA based company had developed bio-processes for gold recovery based on natural mineral formation and transformation in a global mineral cycle. The biological recovery of precious metals from ore involves a number of mechanisms that are dependent on the metal-mineralogical association. These processes include: partial bio-oxidation of sulfide ores; oxidation of gangue minerals exposing gold to leaching; surfactant properties of bacteria/nutrient solutions that improve wettability of ores and solution contact with leachable gold and silver; and microbial production and excretion of trace amounts of gold lixiviants, and bio-fracturing or biological alteration of ore minerals. Pintail has demonstrated enhanced recovery of precious metals during cyanide detoxification of spent heaps at the end of mine life. Biological recovery processes also have the potential to be applied to in situ mining technologies. The in situ process application could recover gold from subgrade deposits, small deposits or those ore bodies with uneconomic stripping ratios for conventional mining. In situ biomining can be accomplished at a fraction of the cost of conventional mining and leaching and does not have the environmental liabilities associated with many conventional gold lixiviants.

Boliden Tara Mines Ltd, located in County Meath Ireland, produce in excess of 2.5 million tonnes per annum of ore from the underground resource located 40 miles north west of Dublin. The zinc-lead ore is mined using long hole open stoping techniques, with ore treated on site. The operation is continually searching for new ways to improve productivities at the mine, and have employed a detailed data acquisition and reporting system on site to provide feedback around performance. One area where both Boliden Tara Mines Ltd and Orica Mining Services believed improvements could be made was in the application of bulk emulsion technology through an Orica supplied but Tara operated Maxipump Delivery System for all production and development blasting at the mine. Both parties committed to the evaluation of this technology at the mine, however the capital cost and technical and economic changes meant the project needed to be diligently investigated and any improvements documented. The first stage of this project was for Orica Mining Services personnel to visit the operation, and conduct a detailed analysis of the operationÆs performance over the past 12 months. The next step in moving forward was then to commission and utilise the customer operated emulsion system at the mine. This was then followed with the collation and analysis of data from the demonstration period to examine and document the benefits of the system. This paper is a summary of the observations made during the site inspection and the data analysed to date, and has been used in determining operational and financial improvements in the comparison between a Maxipump Emulsion Service and the current ANFO loading systems.

Subsidence prediction methods can be divided into two basic types: empirical and analytical. Empirical methods are based largely on a combination of experience, intuition and observations from a large number of observed subsidence data. They are simple in their application, but they are not based on any principle of mechanics. Analytical methods are based on equivalent material modelling principles, where the ground surrounding the extraction is mathematically represented by idealised materials that deform according to the principles of continuum mechanics. Wide applicability and improved understanding are the principal advantages claimed for this approach. In NSW, significant progress has been achieved in the area of subsidence prediction during the last ten years. Empirical prediction curves are available in NSW for predicting the ground movement in the Southern and Newcastle Coalfields. A' comparison of subsidence values predicted from these curves with the actual monitored values indicates that the curves are adequate for use in conjunction with the existing damage assessment methods. Future research for improving the existing empirical prediction curves can only be justified if it is cost effective. There are several numerical models currently in use in NSW for predicting subsidence. The models do not appear to be superior in their ability to predict subsidence when compared with the empirical curves. the performance of these models will no doubt improve along with advances in defining strata properties and failure mechanisms.

The steel industry is facing challenges on a global scale that include depletion of resources, huge energy consumption, and the emission of CO2. The demand for iron products is increasing due to the increased infrastructural development. Zimbabwe produced cast iron from scrap metals. However, there is currently a shortage of scrap, and yet Zimbabwe is rich in limonite ores that are currently being underutilised. The possibility of using limonite ore as a sustainable feed for pig iron production was investigated by preparing some limonite ore carbon composite pellets. The results showed that the addition of coal to the limonite ore and calcium carbonate mix to form the composite pellets resulted in a decrease in the drop number as well as the dry compressive strength of the composite pellets. This research aims to improve the physical properties of the green pellets by the careful addition of hydroxyethyl cellulose as a binder that was found to improve the physical properties of the green pellet. This is important for materials handling during the production process of the composite pellets. Results showed that the drop number was substantially improved by the addition of 0.4 wt per cent hydroxyethyl cellulose while the dry compression strength improved from 2.5 kg/pelIet to around 23 kg/pellet irrespective of the amount of binder added. The binder improved the physical strength of the iron-carbon composite pellets enough to allow for large-scale production of the pellets that can be an alternative and sustainable feed for cast iron production. However more results on the indurated compression strength and other properties such as the reduction degradation index, swelling index, and the reducibility test are required.
