Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has been utilised in the oil and gas industry for over 60 years. The technology was recently identified as having potential value in iron ore, where latent bound moisture may affect ore handling even after dewatering and extraction. The first step in introducing this technology to iron ore involved laboratory tests on drill core samples. These results established the parameters for a downhole borehole magnetic resonance (BMR) tool for iron-rich environments, which was subsequently developed. A major challenge involved shrinking what is a very large tool in the oil industry to a slimhole, lightweight, 1-man deployable mining tool.Of primary concern was the ability to measure the very fast transverse relaxation times (T2s) seen in the lab results on iron ore samples. Iron creates local field gradients that significantly decrease the T2 times. As a result, the BMR tool had to be able to measure T2s in the range of hundreds of microseconds, a level not required in clastic sedimentary formations. The choice of T2 cut-offs in iron ore is critical to successfully separating the free and bound fluids. The industry has typically focused on T2 cut-offs in clastics and carbonates, but not in systems with high iron content. Using core analysis results (poro-perm and NMR) we were able to verify the BMR response. The T2 cut-offs were determined from NMR core analysis and then applied to the logs so as to provide a continuous, calibrated permeability log.Field results that highlight the challenge involved in logging in iron-rich environments are presented, as well as some minimum requirements for a successful BMR log. Examples from boreholes in an active iron ore mine in the Pilbara iron ore province in Western Australia are presented, as well as explanations for how NMR data can be combined with bulk density logs to provide a continuous dry weight density log based on the original density-porosity equation from Alger et al (1963).CITATION:Hopper, T A J, Trofimczyk, K K and Birt, B J, 2017. Competing requirements for land usage sometimes make the correct all- ocation difficult. The decision can be complicated by many factors such as local resident pressure, previous government decisions, economic pres- sures and the duration or permanency of the competing land usages. This problem often confronts the extractive industries with consequent delays in granting leases and some- times considerable local dissension. A proposal to extend the high grade silica sand quarry of the Wamberal Sand Company Pty. Limited is a microcosm of these competing requirements. The sand quarry is located on the New South Wales central coast. It is an open pit operation on a near beach deposit of silica sand suitable for flint glass manufacture.

The process of resource estimation of large precious metal deposits is illustrated by reference to major deposits now being mined or developed by Placer.The estimation procedure commences with building an appropriate model of the mineralization and proceeds through steps of data validation and geostatistical studies. It is important that the geologists most familiar with a deposit be involved with all stages of the estimate, and also prepare a manual estimate used to validate the kriged resource.Resource estimates are major exercises taking many man-months of work. The most time consuming part of this is usually construction of an appropriate three dimensional geological model. The data base for the resource calculations must be complete and checked for accuracy. The most appropriate estimation method must be selected.

The development and operation of three large open cut brown coal mines in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria, Australia, requires a wide range of drilling techniques for coal resource evaluation and stratigraphic defi- nition, material property identification, open cut dewatering, and instal- lation of groundwater monitoring bores. This paper describes in detail the range of drilling techniques, equip- ment used and associated problems with drilling, in a deep sedimentary basin containing several major brown coal seams, multiple aquifer sys- tems of varying pressures and thin layers of hard materials including pyrite, siderite and basalt. Methods of rotary drilling include wireline core drilling, conventional core drilling, conventional flush drilling, diamond core drilling, reverse circulation air lift drilling and bucket auger drilling. Cable tool drilling is also used for strata definition and aquifer sampling.

Unprecedented political, economic, and social change throughout the world will have an increasingly profound effect on the dynamics of the world's mining industry. Analysis of the early financial trends in this development (statistics on exploration expenditure, and investment flows) gives some insight into the magnitude of structural change and its implications for established mining economics and companies.Increasing confidence in the stability of many third world and developing countries is attracting exploration and investment capital that had previously been largely directed to established mining economies in North America, Australia, Europe and Southern Africa. Some of the projects requiring capital and technology in the CIS, Africa and Latin America are technically very attractive. The end of the 'cold war' and the influence of the IMF is gradually changing their risk profile for mining investment.

Many problems result when coal mine shafts are built in complicated geological conditions and serious shaft lining ruptures have often occurred in the eastern part of China since 1987. Grouting is applied as one of the major measurements for shaft lining ruptures. However, as the general location of reinforcement grouting for shaft lining is deep in or near the bottom aquifer, while using cement grout as the grouting material, the grouting mostly belongs to fracturing grouting in deep alluvium. In these conditions, the mechanism and behavior of fracturing grouting has not yet been understood. From these points of view, this paper describes the mechanism of shaft lining rupture and fracturing grouting and then discusses the effect of grout injection on the stability of shaft lining by means of numerical analysis and field data obtained so far.

While the underground mining work environment may have processes and equipment considered unique, most of the broad issues likely to affect the occupational health and safety of employees are not. One such occupational health and safety issue that is common to the mining sector and most other industries is noise. Noise as an occupational health and safety issue is of national significance. Presently noise induced hearing loss costs Australia around $35 million per year on compensation claims experience alone. Noisy equipment and work environments are still being tolerated in parts of the mining industry as `part of the job'. Where work has been undertaken in noise management, considerable emphasis has been placed on either industrial hygiene monitoring programs or the provision of hearing protectors to miners working on or around noisy equipment.Opportunities for more cost-effective and long term methods for controlling noise exist. Ready to apply solutions to noise problems in the mining industry are available, but for many mining operators this information is often difficult to obtain. To overcome this problem, the SHARE program collects and distributes solutions to occupational health and safety problems. The program aims to help organisations to close the gap between what is known about solving health and safety problems and what is actually being applied at the shop floor level: Recent developments have incorporated the SHARE program concept into worksite hazard management projects that involve the participation of employee representatives, front line supervisors and engineering personnel. Besides providing workforce members with an increased understanding of hazard management skills, the SHARE in-house program results in the implementation and sharing of solutions to health and safety problems by the program participants.

Selective mining played a major role in saving a mine and a communityÆs existence as well as creating a working culture that is the model for all KumbaÆs mines. The successes that resulted from selective mining led to receiving KumbaÆs highest award (it was the Gold Medal Breakthrough project of 2003) as well as the productivity award at the National Productivity Institute award ceremony in 2004. Kumba was established in November 2001 (previously Iscor Mining). The new company identified Mineral Resource Management (MRM) as one of its key drivers and an initiative was launched to define MRM in the Kumba way. Best MRM practices at the Kumba mines were included in the definition. Selective mining was born out of this initiative. One of the key principles of good MRM practice was identified as: æThere must be a balance in the operational processÆ. This principle was applied with great success at Thabazimbi Iron Ore mine in the Limpopo province, South Africa. The emphasis of this paper will be to show how value can be unlocked throughout the whole mining value chain. In the past (up to 2001) the mine went through a number of crisis situations: planned production performances were not reached, the stripping ratio was extremely high with two new pits, the product beds were not of constant quality, slope failures were big risks, flooding could and did cut off half of the ore supply, and restructuring demoralised staff.This paper focuses on: selective mining throughput drivers, and selective mining and its role in achieving this balance.The results were dramatic, with huge improvements in production results, stockpiles, plant yields and product bed specifications. The mine was brought into balance and a self feeding loop was created with positive spin-offs up to this day.

Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) is one of the leading base metal producers in India. It operates a two-smelter Complex at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. At this zinc-lead smelter zinc is manufactured by the conventional hydrometallurgical route and lead is produced by Blast furnace technology generating residues or wastes which contain substantial quantities of metal values. Disposal of such wastes is a problem in any non-ferrous industry. Both the stringent environmental regulations and the changing industrial scenario emphasise the need for industrial research to find economically viable and environmentally friendly technologies to recover the metal values from these waste materials. The in-house R&D Centre at Vizag Zinc Smelter (VZS) thinking globally re-engineered its activities and major thrust was given for converting waste to valuable metals and metal compounds. Basic analytical chemistry with the hydrometallurgical concepts has been adopted in developing these innovative technologies. In this paper attempts are made to provide a clear history of the different waste raw material, the process developed for each raw material and their superiority of over other parallel work. Most of the processes described here are pilot plant tested and under patenting. The process flowsheet, results obtained and advantages of each process are presented. This paper provides a consolidated approach through which the varied smelter waste materials can be processed with cost effective and eco-friendly innovative technologies. In-house R&D efforts at VZS with its contribution and achievement in converting æwastes into wealthÆ technologies are presented in this paper on the following the major thrust areas:recovery of zinc from liquid effluent; recovery of zinc from effluent treatment plant (ETP) gypsum sludge; production of highly pure electrolytic zinc metal powder from zinc bearing gypsum residue/sludge generated at the effluent treatment plant; hydrometallurgical recovery of copper as copper sulphate solution which can be used for CuSO4.5H2O, copper cathode/copper metal powder from copper-cadmium cement; recovery of manganese, lead and silver from anode mud generated at Zinc Cell House and 4-metal extraction/recovery of manganese, cobalt, copper and nickel from Indian ocean bed manganese nodules; recovery of zinc, lead, silver and sulphur values from silver concentrate residue generated at the froth flotation process; recovery of silver and lead as lead-silver sponge/lead-silver sulphide concentrate from lead bearing residues; recovery of lead, silver and copper from copper matte; recovery of antimony as antimony metal or lead-antimony master alloy from antimony bearing dross; and recovery of nickel and dimethylglyoxime from Ni-DMG complex.

IndiaÆs iron ore mining industry is growing rapidly in order to augment the capacity to meet the unprecedented demand for the iron ore. Traditionally, much of Indian iron ore production came from exploitation of high-grade haematite ores, with the exception of Kudremukh which beneficiates lean grade Banded Magnetite Quartz ore. Now with the changed scenario of demand and supply, keeping long term sustainability in mind, it is imperative to develop suitable processing technology for exploitation of banded haematite quartz (BHQ) ore available abundantly and not utilised so far. In this direction detailed characterisation and beneficiation studies were conducted with BHQ iron ore from the Bellary-Hospet region of India, assaying 36.5 per cent Fe. The mineralogical studies with the image analyser system revealed the presence of maghemite and haematite as iron-bearing minerals. The gangue mineral associations were siliceous, ferro-magnesian and carbonate minerals. Higher degrees of liberation were observed in the size range of 75 - 212 microns. Liberation grind tests were performed by grinding the ore to different top sizes in a closed circuit laboratory ball mill with the ground samples subjected to Davis tube tests. The yield, grade and recovery were used as parameters to plan a two-stage wet drum magnetic separation based on grinding the primary magnetic concentrate. After subjecting the final magnetic concentrate to flotation to remove residual silica a concentrate assaying more than 68 per cent was obtained. The non-magnetic product from the primary magnetic separation was deslimed, ground, blended with secondary magnetic tails and was subjected to a two pass wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS). The WHIMS concentrate was further subjected to two-stage flotation to remove residual silica to obtain concentrates assaying 64 - 66 per cent Fe. The final combined concentrate from wet drum magnet and WHIMS after flotation could yield a blast furnace (BF) grade pellet feed concentrate assaying more than 65 per cent Fe with a yield about 39 per cent and iron recovery about 70 per cent. A direct reduction (DR) grade pellet feed concentrate assaying 67 per cent Fe with a yield of about 28 - 31 per cent and iron recovery about 53 - 57 per cent could also be produced. Based on the test work, a process flow sheet was developed to beneficiate the BHQ ore for production of BF/DR grade pellet feed concentrate. In this paper methodology adopted for selection of individual process, various diagnostic tests performed to rule out other beneficiation processes and the final process flow sheet development is presented and discussed in detail.

Direct transfer, or community translocation, comprises salvage and replacement of intact æsodsÆ of vegetation together with underlying soil. It has been applied to New Zealand mine sites restoration of native grasslands, wetlands, scrub lands, and forest. It is an equivalent technique to æinstant lawn or tree gardenÆ, commonly used in urban landscaping. Two to six m2 scoops of vegetation, with up to 0.7 m of soil attached, and including root plates of trees and shrubs, are relocated from stripped areas ahead of mining to sites prepared for restoration. Direct transfer uses hydraulic excavators or face shovels and dump trucks, possibly with the aid of bulldozers and other earthmoving machinery. The main advantages of direct transfer, compared with sowing or planting systems for mine site restoration, are the recycling of plant and soil materials which were often wasted by burying under overburden materials, a significantly faster revegetation process, and restoration of the whole ecosystem (plants, animals, birds, invertebrates, and microbes). The main disadvantages are higher costs of stripping and dumping, a greater degree of machine operator skill required, and scheduling becomes critically important. To illustrate the key principles, this paper gives examples of successes and failures of the technique for a variety of New Zealand mining situations. Direct transfer has been successful for a range of communities, from fern wetland and sub-alpine tussock grasslands to 5 m-tall beech forest under storey and seral shrub land, and from temperate to sub-alpine climates. Successful examples show both rapid recovery of indigenous vegetative cover and conservation of habitat for birds and invertebrates. Failures have resulted from excessive death of plants because of inadequate soil salvage depths, acidic leachates, inappropriate handling of stripped sods by inexperienced machinery operators, or prolonged drought conditions immediately following relocation. Change in plant species composition has occurred where clumps of vegetation are too far apart, or shifted plants were too small - in both cases invasive weeds have smothered the original vegetation. Changes in hydrology can also have significant impacts. Our experience indicates that the advantages of direct transfer far outweigh the disadvantages and is now used as the preferred restoration method, where practicable, at mines where it has been trialled.

This paper is a collection of thoughts and frameworks. It addresses a simple question: æIf we are to believe the large number of people and institutions indicating that humans are destroying the Earth and that the end is nigh, why do we bother trying to be sustainable?Æ The paper lays out evidence for the existence of multiple hazards to global society. The existence of a hazard alone is insufficient to make an assessment of risk. Risk estimates are required to support decision-making. An approach to assessing risk is provided and some limited data are presented. A new ædefinitionÆ or statement of what sustainability (in a broad sense) might have become is then given. A decision framework for guiding decision- making about the risks is developed. This framework includes a definition of leadership with inherent implications for what determines whether a leadership position by title is actually leading. The paper concludes by offering a view of minerals industry sustainability and considerations around maturity in the current economic situation. It is hoped that by placing this collection of frameworks around sustainability, a supporting structure emerges that will facilitate action. It is proposed that action taken in this way will be more effective than reaction to regulation or even social license to operate imperatives because it is driven by a more holistic view of the challenges and the potential roles of individuals û all of whom are potential leaders at some scale of action.

Water is important commodity in the mining industry. Water is used in the many stages of mining from the exploration stages and drilling, to mine development and operation and finally throughout mine rehabilitation and post mine activities. With the use of water throughout the life span of a mine, its management is an important component in the operation of any mine. Unfortunately the use of water within the operations can be one of the major sources of pollution generated from a mine. Such contamination can occur via numerous mechanisms including ground water flow, over land flow and accidents. Contamination may occur in any stage of mining operations, for example a leaking or failed tailings dam. With the above in mind, the paper presented will focus upon the use and management of water in the mining industry: ownership rights of water û common law as well as legislative rights; a review and analysis of the existing Queensland legislation and its mechanisms for the protection of water pollution from mining operations; and conclusions drawn from the paper relating to the Queensland legislation.

The processes that take place during the development of a heating are difficult to visualise. Bulk coal self-heating tests at The University of Queensland (UQ) using a two-metre column are providing graphic evidence of the stages that occur during a heating. Data obtained from these tests, both temperature and corresponding off-gas evolution can be transformed into what is effectively a video-replay of the heating event. This is achieved by loading both sets of data into a newly developed animation package called Hotspot. The resulting animation is ideal for spontaneous combustion training purposes as the viewer can readily identify the different hot spot stages and corresponding off-gas signatures. Colour coding of the coal temperature, as the hot spot forms, highlights its location in the coal pile and shows its ability to migrate upwind. An added benefit of the package is that once a mine has been tested in the UQ two-metre column, there is a permanent record of that particular coals performance for mine personnel to view.

The steps for the beneficiation of iron ores differ from ore to ore, depending on the mineralogical phases of the particular iron ore and the nature of the association of the gangue minerals with iron oxide in that ore. The extent to which the beneficiation can be undertaken economically depends both on the amount and the nature of the gangue. The analysis of the phases present in an orebody optimises the mining and process operations (separation, beneficiation, sintering, etc).X-ray diffraction (XRD) provides qualitative and quantitative information about the main ore phases as well as the gangue mineralogy and the amorphous content present in a sample. In addition, modern quantification methods such as Rietveld refinement allow the calculation of the distribution of elements in solid solutions such the substitution of Fe with Al in goethite or hematite.The use of high speed detectors has made XRD an important tool for grade and process control. Finger printing of XRD data can facilitate multi-dimensional mapping of ore deposits and drill cores, identifying regions of favourable mineral compositions. Grade control using XRD can be completely automated and controlled remotely.The two case studies in this paper demonstrate how XRD and finger printing can be used for grade control, process optimisation and quality control of a goethitic and a magnetitic iron ore. The enormous potential of XRD as an inexpensive, reliable tool, useful in the characterisation of iron ores will be demonstrated.CITATION:K÷nig, U, 2013. The dewetting kinetics between a small air-liquid interface and a silica (negatively charged in water) planar surface in solutions of dodecylammonium chloride (cationic surfactant) has been investigated using the Scheludko cell and digital high-speed video microscopy. The gas-liquid interface was created at the bottom of a small silica capillary of the cell and then was moved towards the silica planar surface. After the rupture of the liquid films between the interfaces, the expansion of the gas-liquid-solid three-phase contact (TPC) line was observed and recorded using a digital high-speed video microscope system, operating at 1000 frames per second. The surface tension of the surfactant solution was measured using the pendant drop technique. The equilibrium contact angle was measured using the Scheludko-Minings method with a silica micro-sphere. The TPC radius was determined as a function of time and compared against the available hydrodynamic and molecular-kinetic models. The experimental data are described very well by the molecular-kinetic model for the TPC line motion. The hydrodynamic model is in agreement with the experimental data only for a short time after inception of the three-phase contact expansion.

Mineral sands represent an important new resource being developed in the Murray Basin, including parts of western Victoria. This paper will outline a simple methodology for mineral sands characterisation, developed as part of the AMIRA-managed project P777 æThe Development of Heavy Suspension Techniques for High Density Separations (Replacement of ClericiÆs Solution)Æ. This project is currently sponsored by three multinational mining companies (De Beers Consolidated Mines, Iluka Resources Limited and Rio Tinto Limited) and is developing an innovative laboratory mineral characterisation procedure that will allow the replacement of the currently employed highly-toxic chemicals.Mineral sand resources almost always contain more than one valuable (and relatively heavy) mineral. Titanium minerals are found with a large range of titanium contents, giving rise to density variation and often subjective mineralogical descriptions. Companies tend to rely on laboratory heavy liquid separation in the evaluation of samples arising from exploration, mining or metallurgical processes. Unfortunately, there are only a limited number of high density (æheavyÆ) liquids and these tend to be more toxic as their density increases. Low-toxicity inorganic solutions, based on tungsten compounds, have been developed that can be utilised at relative densities (RD) up to 3.0. However, beyond this value currently only organic liquids can be used. Diiodomethane (methylene iodide) having a relative density of 3.31 is commonly used; however, this presents significant health and safety hazards. Mixtures of thallium formate and thallium malonate were found in the early 1900s by Clerici to provide liquids having specific gravities between 4.0 and 5.0, hence æClericiÆs solutionÆ. For the characterisation of the heavy components of mineral sand deposits (eg anatase sg 3.9, rutile sg 4.2, ilmenite sg 4.4 û 4.7 and zircon sg 4.6 û 4.8) there is currently no heavy liquid alternative to ClericiÆs solution. ClericiÆs solution is highly toxic and testing is now conducted by very few laboratories worldwide with costs reflecting the chemical costs (though extensive efforts are made to recover and reuse the liquid, plus the requirement of its removal from the mineral samples), the infrastructure costs and health and safety regimes (eg blood testing of exposed staff, inventory management). A simple laboratory technique of density fractionation is being developed, employing suspensions of fine tungsten carbide particles in lithium heteropolytungstate (LST) solutions, that can replace ClericiÆs solution in the evaluation of fine mineral sands samples (eg -250+150 microns). The developing methodology that can achieve low-cost, low-toxic separations at relative densities above 5.0 will be outlined and the comparison of results with ClericiÆs solution presented.
