This paper describes the design of the marine riser structures, including the design measures for sealing and protection from flooding, dewatering and connection to the main tunnels, for the Gold Coast desalination plant in Queensland. The risers connect the intake and discharge tunnels to the ocean. Construction commenced on both in April 2007. The paper describes the key design criteria for the risers, the construction constraints that influenced the design and the design of the main elements of the risers and the connections to the tunnels.

Hydrogen and oxygen isotopic constraints on hydrothermal fluid composition from the Pliocene Boyongan and Bayugo porphyry copper-gold deposits (southern Philippines ) reveal mixing of magmatic and sea water reservoirs as the hydrothermal system evolved. Magmatic-equilibrated fluids (d18O: +8.3ë to +9.1ë; dD: -61ë to -51ë) are represented by hypersaline brines implicated in copper-gold transport and deposition. These dominate the fluid inclusion assemblage in early comb-quartz (unidirectional solidification textures), miarolitic quartz, and in K-silicate-stage quartz-K-feldspar ¦ biotite veins. Fluids responsible for post-K-silicate alteration assemblages of pyrite-clay (illite, pyrophyllite and kaolinite), alunite and smectite are represented by low-moderate salinity two-phase inclusions in co-existing quartz. These are interpreted as mixtures of evolved magmatic fluids (d18O dD: -42ë to -20ë) with evolved Pliocene sea water (d18O: + 4.0ë; dD: +4ë). The isotopic evidence for sea water involvement in the hydrothermal system suggests that porphyry emplacement and associated diatreme formation could have occurred in a submarine setting. Newly published models suggest that some orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits formed by the remobilisation of trace elements during interaction with hydrothermal or metamorphic fluids from early sedimentary pyrite that was enriched in Au, As and Te. The released trace elements are transported by the fluids to favourable trap sites where they are deposited. Therefore, early enrichment of Au, As and Te in source rocks (particularly in pyritic black shale) can be crucial to the formation of orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits.The most important cause of the enrichment of gold and other trace elements in the sedimentary basins has been examined in this study to determine which basins are the most prospective for the development of orogenic gold deposits. An important influence for Au and other associated trace element accumulation in sedimentary pyrite is the temporal variation of trace element content in the oceans, as revealed by a database of over 1400 analyses of pyrite from black shale through geologic time. It is inferred that sediments coeval with those where sedimentary pyrite is enriched in Au and associated trace elements are more likely to be source rocks of orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits.Factor analysis of the trace element content of pyrite through geologic time was conducted to investigate the multivariate relationships amongst trace elements and how these chemical factors explain the uptake of trace elements. One important factor includes Te, Au, Pb and Bi content. The incorporation of these large cations into pyrite is enhanced by As3+ substituting for Fe in pyrite lattice. The As3+ ion occurs in relatively oxidised environments and, thus, it is expected that shales deposited in non-euxinic waters are better source rocks for orogenic gold deposits.The examination of both the time in which the sediments were deposited and the redox conditions of the basin, and the ocean more broadly, can be used as a guide to approximate the extent of a basin’s fertility. A genetic model for the genesis of high-grade (>65 wt per cent Fe) Proterozoic, banded iron formation (BIF)-related iron deposits such as the Tom Price, Mount Whaleback deposits in the Hamersley Province (Australia), the N4E, N4W, N5 deposits at Carajßs (Brazil), the Aguas Claras, Conceitpo, and Casa de Pedra deposits in the Iron Quadrangle (Brazil), the Donkerpoort West, Kwagas East deposit in the Thabazimbi iron ore district (South Africa), or the Saksagan ore field at Krivoy Rog (Ukraine), needs to take into account the: timing of regional metamorphism with respect to the upgrade of BIF to high-grade iron ore; significance and relationship of the proto-ore to the hydrothermal alteration minerals and zonation and the process of iron enrichment; source and oxidation state of the hydrothermal fluids that caused the iron enrichment; types of geochemical processes that caused the hydrothermal alteration and iron enrichment; and significance of the widespread carbonatisation of the host rocks as a prerequisite for high-grade BIF-related iron mineralisation.We argue that a unifying model for high-grade BIF-related iron deposits cannot, presently, adequately explain the geological and geochemical characteristics observed in these deposits and, therefore, provide two end-member models that take into account the diversity of geological and geochemical ore deposit features. Our discrete model for the genesis of high-grade, BIF-related iron deposits is based on the interpreted tectonic setting, distinct hydrothermal fluid source of, and processes observed in, major BIF-related iron deposits. We divide two end-members: Proterozoic deep fault-magmatic (Carajßs) type, and Proterozoic rift-basin (Hamersley) type.Both end-members experienced varying degrees of deep weathering episodes that effected the hypogene enrichment and, ultimately, yielded the high-grade iron ore mined in many places today.

The productivity and economic success of a German hard coal mine is attributed to the high productivity of a small number of operation points; however high rates of production are associated with increased gas emission at the working sites. Therefore modem high technology is required in order to reach the planned production rate, since high methane concentrations often cause unplanned breakdowns in operation. The optimised simulation of gas emission is a fundamental planning tool for mine design as well as for determining the potential of a coal deposit and has increased in significance over the last years. Methane-INFO enables the three-dimensional, graphical simulation of a working site taking account of different aspects such as the mine design, ventilation, production rate, geology, seam quality, gas exhaustion, etc. The following paper gives a short overview over the benefits of the discussed system.

At BHP Billiton Iron Ore operations, run of mine ore from the several Newman Joint Venture (NJV) mines is railed in 12 kt rakes to Port Hedland. Rakes are processed sequentially, with the lump and fines components from each rake sampled after crushing and screening. The grade of ore from the individual mines varies around consistently different means. Although a discrete sample is attributed to each rake, the sample contains some material from the following and/or the preceding rakes due to dilution by ore from the neighbouring rakes during the dumping, screening and crushing processes. Individual rake grades at the port are therefore biased according to the mine sources of adjacently processed rakes. Dilution does not affect the grade of the overall NJV product or the accuracy of port stockpile grades; however, it does limit the ability to use port rake grades to review the quality performance of individual mines and provide meaningful lump-fines algorithms and port to mine biases for individual mines, information that is useful when scheduling ore for mining. A non-linear regression model has been used to estimate the average dilution from the preceding and following rakes. It has been shown that the lump and fines samples for 12 kt rakes are each diluted within the Port process with about 8.3 per cent of the sample coming from the preceding rake and about 3.6 per cent from the following rake. This can bias the reported rake grade by up to one per cent iron. The results of this analysis have been incorporated into the daily grade scheduling system to provide more accurate individual mine grade data and consequently better decision making.

On the 18th November, 19'58, the first coal was delivered to the Morwell Power Station from the adjacent Open Cut using conveyors for the transport of the coal from the working face to the boiler bunkers. As the cut develops the coal seam will be worked for its full depth of about 360 feet from four benches, each feeding a conveyor line along th.e face and up out of the cut to the power station and briquette factory. By 1970 the estimated maximum daily demand reaches 60,000 tons and the total annual output 18 million tons. The complete conveyor installation will then total some 9 miles with a capital cost of over £3~ million.The choice of conveyors in place of the more usual rail system was made possible by the development of movable belt conveyors which use mechanical conveyor shifting, high belt speeds and flexible high strength belts and the paper deals with these and some other aspects of the scheme.INTRODUCTIONThe development of brown coal deposits is usually based on open cut workings equipped with a few large dredgers giving an almost continuous output of coal or overburden which has to be hauled a comparatively short distance. These are ideal conditions for conveyor operation, and it is surprising that, until recently, rail transport has been used almost exclusively in brown coal open cuts. In some cases inclined conveyors have been introduced to take the coal from the coal levels up out of the cut to bunkers at groundlevel, but trains have been left to operate between the ditch bunker feeding the conveyor system and the dredger.

The exploration of Mount Isa Mines' new copper source will require the development of a five kilometre 4.7 x 5.5 metre blind decline commencing 1000m below the surface and extending to 1600m below the surface. With virgin rock temperatures approaching 60¦C, the ventilation strategy represents a complete departure from any previously used at this mine, in that refrigeration becomes essential. The use of direct water to air cooling techniques has become commonplace in mines throughout the world and their application is being adopted at Mount Isa Mines. A heat load simulation routine has been implemented to allow for the design of refrigeration requirements, as well as to aid in the selection of diesel or electric equipment. This enabled planners to determine the size of a surface based refrigeration plant. Future refrigeration demand for expansion into the ore production stage has also been investigated.

Evaluation of previous studies of multi-layer perceptron type artificial neural networks in the modelling of the deformability behaviour of rock have suggested that a deviation from the standard method of laboratory testing of rock under triaxial loading at constant confining stresses and constant axial strain rates may be inappropriate when the data produced are used to train an artificial neural network. In this paper, preliminary results of adopting such a strategy are reported. Of specific concern is the establishment of a suitable schedule for the stress path during testing. Furthermore, the training element of back propagation optimisation was directed towards prediction of new stresses given old stresses and old strain increments. Adoption of this method of supervisation in artificial neural network training facilitates the integration of the trained neural network within existing numerical methods used in rock mechanics. The target code was a finite difference Lagrangian formulation for the analysis of continua. Sandstone rock taken from a quarry in the UK was used in the study which showed that the method has great potential.

Gold-quartz and antimony-gold-quartz veins in the Hodgkinson Province are hosted by subgreenschist to greenschist facies metasediments and show no spatial association with granitic rocks. They commonly parallel axial plane foliations or occur in brittle to brittle-ductile shear zones. Detailed mapping in the Hodgkinson goldfield indicates that vein systems are isolated in distinct structural and lithologic domains by post-mineralization faulting. Gold-quartz and antimony-gold-quartz veins have distinctive mesoscopic textures characteristic of the mesothermal vein environment. Some of the antimony-gold-quartz veins are located on domain boundaries which truncate the gold mineralization. In. some areas, tin and tungsten-tin mineralization which are spatially related to Late Palaeozoic granitoids appear to postdate the gold-quartz and antimony-gold-quartz mineralization.Oxygen and hydrogen isotopic studies of vein and alteration assemblages associated with these diverse ores provide constraints on fluid sources and have implications for the origin of mesothermal gold mineralization. The available isotopic data are consistent with a dominantly magmatic source for tin and tungsten-tin mineralization although there is evidence of a late-stage meteoric component in some tin-mineralizing systems. Kalimantan has been a major diamond producer, while in the 1980s a placer gold rush occurred in Indonesia and Malaysia. Reviewing extensive geological and mining data highlights phenomenal palaeo-environmental changes in the Sundaland region, interpreted to be responsible for generating ‘giant’ placers. Correlation of the Late Cainozoic stratigraphy has been facilitated from mine exposures and drill holes distributed throughout Peninsular Malaysia, the Indonesian Tin islands and Kalimantan, including contiguous marine areas with extensive shallow seismic profiling data. Knowing the association of rich placers with palaeo-environmental episodes and stratigraphical units has been helpful to facilitate their discovery. All three placer commodities responded similarly to region-wide landscape evolution following Mio-Pliocene high sea levels. Commencing with major regression, important stages comprised: a long period of landscape stability with deep weathering during the maximum Sundaland extent gradually rising sea levels/precipitation initiated slumping of mineralised regolith to form fans, later reworked by braided streams with aggradation (Old Alluvium); during episodic pluvial periods downcutting upgraded placers significant change occurred around Middle Pleistocene time with peneplanation and pedogenesis from Late Pleistocene time ‘modern’ fluviatile deposition (Young Alluvium) filled incised V-shaped valleys.Placer seams show systematic variation in stratigraphic position, in particular cassiterite especially occurs in the Old Alluvium (equivalent Upper Dahor Formation in Kalimantan). Gold is commonly richer in gravelly younger deposits, partly because of secondary precipitation within permeable alluvium. BUCKETT (Lake View and Star Limited) : At the outset I should like to add my congratulations to those already extended to Mr..Norwood on his excellent paper, which has given us all an inspiration to strive further to improve our plant recoveries. In some respects this paper has left us so little to discuss without considerable time spent on. further research work. At all points one is met by a baffling array of facts which leave one feeling hesitant to speak.The careful and methodical way in which Mr. Norwood went along step by step until all channels of research presenting themselves were tested to his own satisfaction leaves me with but a few comments to make. Particularly striking to me is the explanation of the residual gold values in calcines by recrystallization of haematite and here is a line to be attacked by future studies. This will be mentioned again later.Particularizing on the paper, the first point that struck me was the method of change of pyrite through to the final haematite. I have never been able to satisfy myself that a sample taken from various positions along a roaster when cooled, as described on p. 397, represented a fair sample of the conditions at that point, but I must confess that I have not found a substitute that did satisfy me.However, the following figures are illuminating... But to fill dry a receptacle of known volume with calcines, as described by Mr. Norwood, gives the following apparentspecific gravities:

The discovery of copper and nickel sulphides in the Riwaka Complex in 1967 led to considerable exploration activity by a number of companies. Various exploration techniques used by these companies are summarised and discussed. Activity of these companies shows that mineralisation is mainly confined to the southern, ultramafic section of the Riwaka Complex where geological mapping recognised sixteen units within, or associated with the Riwaka Complex. Significant pyrrhotite, pentlandite chalcopyrite mineralisation is restricted to biotite feldspar pyroxenites and to clinopyroxenite units. Lesser and more erratically distributed pyrite chalcopyrite pyrrhotite mineralisation occurs in poikilitic pyroxene hornblendites, melanocratic gabbros, and in marginal diorite lenses. It is suggested that a linear belt of layered ultramafic and mafic rocks described in Fiordland by Williams (1974) may be a southern extension of the Riwaka Complex. The Riwaka Complex has been classified as belonging to the Picritic subtype, (Tholeiitic suite), of Naldrett and Cabri, (1976), and as such it is concluded that it exhibits substantial potential for the discovery of economic copper and nickel deposits. It is considered that the complex is a multiphase differentiated intrusion emplaced in a major tensional fracture zone that developed in a relatively stable tectonic environment, namely a succession of middle Paleozoic shallow water shelf sediments. Based on sparse available evidence it is suggested that the Riwaka Complex was intruded in the lower to middle Permian. It is further suggested that the tensional fracturing was initiated by the onset of subduction process which were responsible for the development of the Permian volcanic arcs and ophiolite belt in the north west Nelson area.

This paper reviews the geochemistry of weathered nickeliferous sulphidic and lateritic profiles, the supergene behaviour of nickel and ore-associated elements, and their implications for exploration in an attempt to distinguish between barren and mineralised nickeliferous profiles. Nickel is an abundant accessory element in ultramafic rocks with background concentrations in some units up to 0.25 weight per cent. Ore-grades in fresh rock are mostly associated with massive and disseminated sulphide zones within magnesium-rich layered ultramafic sequences. In lateritic weathered terrain, nickel is also concentrated in the regolith profile. This process not only upgrades nickel in the gossanous weathered product of sulphidic deposits, but for sub-economic sulphide zones and some ultramafic rocks, is sufficient to result in a supergene resource. Ore-grade accumulations of nickel in regolith after sulphide-poor ultramafic rocks are referred to as lateritic deposits. Nickel sulphide zones and their ferruginous weathering products are collectively referred to as sulphidic deposits and are the major source of nickel in Western Australia. Mineral exploration in the Yilgam Block is hampered by deep lateritic weathered profiles (eg Butt and Sheppy, 1975; Smith, 1977; 1982). During the nickel boom of 1967 - 1972, most discoveries resulted from the location of outcropping nickeliferous gossan and ironstone. Exposed ultramafic terrain with nickel sulphide potential were explored intensively, mostly by gossan and soil sampling. However, up to 85 per cent of the area of the Yilgarn Block is buried by transported regolith. In these covered areas, barren and mineralised rock responses at the surface are similar and soil sampling produced unreliable results due to many false anomalies. A statistical, multi-element approach to regional geochemical exploration has evolved. Potential trace element indicators investigated, include Co, Cr, Cu, Ir, Mn, Pb, Pd, Pt, Sc, Se, and Zn. In recent years, trace element ratios have also been tested with varying degrees of Success.

LKAB operates two underground mines in Kiruna and Malmberget, Sweden. Blast furnace pellet is the main product and makes up 70 per cent of total production. The orebodies are hosted by 1910 - 1860 Ma old volcanic rocks. The host rocks and the ores were affected by the Svecokarelian orogeny for 1890 - 1860 Ma ago. The deposit belongs to the Kiruna type apatite-rich iron ore. Magnetite is the main ore mineral but haematite is the dominant ore mineral in some orebodies in the western part of the deposit. Large-scale sublevel caving is the dominant mining method. Three main haulage levels are in operation at present. The ore boundaries and quality can be detected by geophysical logging resulting in reduced waste dilution and subsequent grade reduction. The susceptibility measurements have been used in the magnetite ore since 1991 and gamma-gamma measurements in the haematite ore since 1998. The mining scale has increased during the last 20 years but diamond drilling has remained at approximately 18 000 drilling metres per year. Uncertainties in the ore constructions can lead to unexpected cost increases, ore loss and dilution. The ore boundaries are evaluated with percussion drill holes using in-hole geophysics to achieve satisfactory geological knowledge. The probes are calibrated in all currently mined orebodies. The correlation between core sample assays and measured susceptibility and gamma-gamma values is strong. The cost to determine the ore boundary by percussion drilling with in-hole geophysics is two-thirds lower, and productivity is six times higher compared to diamond drilling. The measurements are made by geotechnicians and the interpretations by a geologist. The results are transferred to a database and presented three dimensionally as holes with iron grade intervals on mine maps. The interpreted holes are used by the geologist in various ways in the geological modelling. Layout planning uses the measurements as a tool to place the drifts at the correct distance from the ore contact especially in the longitudinal sublevel caving and the production hole planning to optimise the final length of the cross-cuts and drifts for best ore recovery.

The development of mineral resources is based on a spatial model of the orebody that is only partly known from exploration drilling and associated geological interpretations. As a result, orebody models generated from the available information are uncertain and may require the use of stochastic conditional simulation techniques. Multiple-point methods have been developed for petroleum reservoir modelling, enabling reproduction of complex geological geometries. This paper considers a multiple-point approach to capture the uncertainty of the lithological model. The implementation of the method at the Yandi channel iron ore deposit in Western Australia and performance characteristics are discussed. The uncertain lithological model translates into considerable grade-tonnage uncertainty.

The decrepitation technique is a rapid means of measuring abundances, temperatures and to some extent the fluid compositions, of fluid inclusions in transparent and opaque minerals. The method has been used to investigate the hydrothermal fluid systems associated with gold mineralisation in the Tennant Creek, Pine Creek and Halls Creek Goldfields. At the Enterprise Mine, Pine Creek, several different stages of quartz veining are distinguished and within these, gradational changes in fluid temperatures and compositions help to define the centre and nature of the thermal system responsible for the mineralisation. In the surrounding Pine Creek region and at Tennant Creek and Halls Creek, the results were applied on a regional scale to characterize outcrops and aid in the discrimination between potentially mineral- ized and barren outcrops. The decrepitation method involves the heating of a small (lgm) sample of crushed and sized grains up to as high as 800 degrees celsius. During the heating the fluid inclu- sions within the grains develop sufficient internal pressure to physically burst, the temperature of such bursting being dependent on the type of fluid and the prevailing tem- perature at the time the inclusion was originally trapped. The resulting tabulation of the number of inclusion bursts per 10 degree temperature interval is plotted as a histogram of decrepitations versus tempera- ture and called a decrepigram. The decrepi- grams frequently show several distinct peaks at different temperatures which are caused by different populations of inclusions in the sample. The areas of the peaks indicate the abundances of inclusions in each population while the shape and mean temperature of the peak provides a guide to the type of fluids involved. Of particular importance in this study is the presence of decrepitation peaks at fairly low temperatures (around 2000 C. These are characteristic of C02 rich fluids which build up internal pressure very quickly when heated. The Enterprise Gold Mine at Pine Creek comprises a number of overlapping quartz vein systems hosted by Burrell Creek Formation sediments. The geology of this mine has been described at this conference by Dann and Delaney, who have defined several distinct stages of quartz veining based on structural, mineralogical and physical features of the veins. For this decrepitation study, 19 quartz samples from the mine and environs, including some from each stage of veining were collected. These results suggest that there are 4 major vein types, within 3 of which additional small variations can be discerned which are due to gradational changes in the temperatures and fluid compositions in the mine area.

The broad biodiversity of our country is manifested through several different biological forms. From the villages of Portovelo and San Gerardo in the southern part of Ecuador, some samples of water and rocks were taken in order to identify the native micro-organisms which take part in the natural processes of leaching of sulfurous minerals. The presence of Spp Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was determined together with a fungi sample which has not yet been characterised by the current workers. These have been isolated, grown, experimented and conserved in appropriate cryogenic environments. The present research intends to study the individual and group adaptation of the bacteria and the fungi upon suitable systems of agitation and ventilation, in combination with several different concentrations of refractory auriferous samples. These refractory samples were derived from old mine workings and the experiments were performed to test the effectiveness of the isolated species in bioleaching as pre-treatments upon the cyaniding processes. The capability of these bacteria to develop in environments with high concentrations of cyanide has also been studied, to investigate the possible use of bacteria in the biodegradation of cyanide. The presence of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in acid conditions has already been tested in advance, however, the presence of fungi species in these conditions are studied to prove their efficiency as another alternative for the bioleaching of refractory auriferous minerals and Baptista, 1998).

Advanced preparation techniques open new ways for SEM and X-ray diffraction (XRD) investigations on hydrating cementitious systems. In this paper the early time hydration of Portland cement is studied with advanced cryo scanning electron microscopy techniques in combination with in situ X-ray diffraction and heat-flow calorimetry. The application of preparation techniques and analytical methods to Portland cement hydration are presented and discussed. Some aspects of hydration reactions are focused. The reaction products of the first minutes, changes in ettringite morphology, AFm formation during the deceleration period and the visualisation of C-S-H microstructures were special points of interest. X-ray diffraction analyses and Cryo-SEM images gave essential information about phase development, reaction kinetics, microstructure and morphology of hydration products. Portlandite, AFt and AFm phases were detected by in situ XRD. Cryo-SEM analyses enabled high resolution imaging and EDX-analyses of cement particles and reaction products. The results of the different analytical methods were compared to obtain detailed information about crystallisation processes and microstructural development during the first three days of Portland cement hydration.
