In exchange for issuing minerals rights from the Crown Mineral Estate to explorers and miners, the Crown expects a æfair returnÆ on this investment, ultimately for the benefit of all New Zealanders. In the case of mining permits, this return is in the form of a tangible asset û royalties from mining activities. But for exploration activity, the return sought by the Crown is an intangible asset û information. The information obtained serves three purposes û in helping Crown Minerals to set work programme conditions during permit allocation, for monitoring the performance of permit holders in accordance with permit conditions, and for archiving and making available for future interested explorers and other parties. Difficulties can arise during the allocation and monitoring process when either party has more information than the other that is not shared. To date not enough emphasis has been placed on the intrinsic value and content of the information generated by explorers and the importance this information can have in the exploration process leading to new mineral discoveries. For attracting exploration investment, the quality and availability of such information, combined with other geoscientific data, is a fundamental determinant for potential explorers when choosing to explore in a global market, and strongly defines the mineral prospectivity for a country. This is something the Australian States and other jurisdictions seeking mineral investment learnt long ago, and who now provide substantial amounts of cheaply or freely available packaged geoscientific datasets, increasingly over the Internet. To have a vibrant mineral exploration industry so that the benefits from the mineral estate can be realised for all New Zealanders, a shift in emphasis to the value of its mineral information base itself is required. Such an approach is befitting of a true Knowledge Economy, and would enable the Crown to make better-informed decisions regarding utilisation of its natural resources.

Recovery of Fine Gold Particles from Philippine Gold Deposits by Enhanced Gravity Concentration and Flotation The objective of the study is to determine the applicability of enhanced gravity concentration (EGC) and flotation for gold recovery. While gravity concentration methods have long been applied to gold ores, especially to free-milling types that requires minimal beneficiation, flotation for gold recovery has not yet taken hold as a major operation in the Philippine setting. In this study, the application of EGC and flotation for gold is applied and compared to the existing methods for gold recovery. Two samples, with assays of 7.315 and 5.333 g Au/MT (samples 1 and 2, respectively) are used for this study. These samples are subjected to mineralogical studies and is found to have a gold-particle size ranging 10 to 200 microns. To verify the separation size, the mesh-of-grind (MOG) is used as the primary parameter for experimentation. Initially, the samples are stage-crushed, ground, and subjected to EGC using a Falcon SB40 Concentrator. Based on the results, the two samples showed that recovery increases with a finer MOG. The ratio of concentration (K) decreases with a finer MOG. This shows that there should be sufficient liberation of the gold values for EGC to be effective. The effect of the enhancement is to pronounce the difference in specific gravity of the minerals, promoting better separation. This is validated by the high recovery values of 86.97 per cent and 98.73 per cent exhibited respectively for samples 1 and 2 (at 54 microns). For the flotation runs, sample 2 with an average particle size of 80 per cent passing 74 microns is examined using thiocarbamate-based collectors for roughing and subsequently exhibited a recovery of 96.32 per cent. At this point, the concentration ratio (K) is noted as an important efficiency indicator for flotation process since it yielded a very low-mass and high-metal content concentrate.

The non-renewable energy resources of Queensland comprise coal, petroleum (oil and gas), oil shale and uranium. Coal is widely distributed., and has been developed extensively both for export and for use within the State. Proven reserves total 5 390 million tonnes recoverable of coking coal and 5 580 million tonnes recoverable of non-coking; very large resources particularly of non-coking coal are still to be quantified by further drilling. Annual production is of the order of 20 million tonnes of coking coal, principally for export, and 6 million tonnes of non-coking, mainly for power generation within the State. Petroleum resources are meagre in com- parison with those of coal. Initial recover- able reserves of liquids (mainly in the now substantially depleted Moonie Oil Field) totalled only 4.2 million m3. Initial recover- able reserves of gas (mainly in the western Surat and Bowen Basins) totalled 7 800 million m3. Annual production is of the order of 64 thousand m3 of liquids for refining in Bris- bane, and 268 million m3 of gas mainly for production of fertiliser and for industrial and domestic heating, in Brisbane. The design of mine ventilation systems for the BHP Steel Division Collieries is based on the acquisition of ventilation survey data for the establishment of a realistic computer net- work model. The branches which form the net- work for the computer models are calculated from a range of resistance factors incorporat- ing both a frictional and shock loss component. Since shock losses can account for up to 30 per cent of the total energy losses in mine airways the use of friction factors alone without accounting for shock losses will result in the choosing of an insufficiently performing fan. Published tables of friction factors have in- variably been taken from metalliferous or single entry studies and consequently are not reliable for Australia's mining conditions where multiple entries with regularly spaced cut-throughs are the normal practice. Typical resistance factors for roadways of rectangular cross-section 5.5 m x 2.0 m, with coal sides, have been found to vary from 0.11 Ns2/m8/km where no timber supports are used, to 0.98 Ns2/m8/km where double centre legging together with wooden chocks is used. In addition to the range of resistance factors due to varying support methods, the nature of use for a roadway is very significant because of the condition of repair and upkeep maintained.

In recent years the production of steel from directly reduced iron ore pellets has ex- panded rapidly. However continued growth will depend on an adequate supply of suitable raw materials for the various commercial gaseous and solid reductant processes now in operation. Al- though at present Australia does not produce pellets primarily for direct reduction, there is an increasing awareness of Australia's potential role as a supplier of high grade ores for export and/or domestic use. The properties and quality requirements of iron ore pellets made specifically for directre- duction (DR) are reviewed and the laboratory techniques and test methods used at the CSIRO Division of Process Technology for the evaluat- ion of potential DR feedstocks are described. At the present time most of the evaluation tests for DR pellets are extensions of those de- signed for existing blast furnace (BF) burdens. In the case of some physical parameters such as cold compression strength, abrasion index and cold strength after reduction this extension is quite satisfactory. In the measurement of para- meters such as reducibility, swelling and stick- ing tendency, however, it is necessary to deve- lop meaningful standardized tests so that ores and pellets can be ranked for DR performance. To do this, data from the laboratory tests and from operating plants must be correlated.

The paper describes developments since 1959 in major excavators to meet the demand for higher outputs of overburden and coal under less favourable batter conditions than used hitherto in the coal deposits of the Latrobe Valley. Particular reference is made to investigations of designs of bucket wheel head configurations for the digging of these flat batters on high faces, and examples are given of the wide use of models inthese studies. An explanation is given of how solution of these problems and surface conditions unfavourable for wheeled transport confirmed selection of the long boom rather than the compact type of bucket wheel excavator for the Latrobe Valley applications.The past decade has seen advances in the manufacture in Australia of components for excavators and similar machines. The history of Australian manufacture of components for major brown coal excavators is traced;and reference is made to study and application of Australian and overseas (mainly German) codes and practices in the design and construction of machines made partly here and partly in Germany.A section of the paper deals with advances in electrical engineering for large excavators in Australia and its interdependence with mechanical design and construction.Finally, as an example of the versatility of the bucket wheel excavator, a description is given of a recent application for the mining of mineral sands in northern N.S.W.

This is the more deplorablesince the evidence laid open by mining operations is destroyed almost as soon as it is exposed, and there exists the real need of a continuous and connected record of geologieal developments.

Funding is at an absurdly low level in comparison with the economic importance of resource supply.

Regular monitoring for methane gas is required near working faces in gassy underground mines where the potential for methane ignitions is greatest. However, high concentrations of methane can also accumulate outby the face where methane levels are monitored less frequently. Wearing a personal methane monitor equipped with an alarm could protect persons working in these outby areas from injury or death due to methane ignitions. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted studies to evaluate methanometers that could be used as person-wearable monitors. For the present study, seven different person-wearable monitors that are not currently approved for underground use were evaluated. This paper describes test procedures used to evaluate performance of methane monitors that could be used underground for continuous personal monitoring of methane. The information in this report provides data that allows the reader to make side-by side comparisons of these instruments.

ABSTRACT- I Chemotrophic bacteria, capable of oxidising inorganic species such as Fe(II) and S(-]I) for their metabolic energy, have been known for many decades and interest in these bacterial species has increased since their ability oxidise auriferous arsenopyrite ores has been demonstrated. The rate at which bacterial cultures can oxidise a solid sulphide ore is of importance but a number of difficulties arise when attempting to evaluate this oxidative activity. The two major problems are counting the number of viable bacteria present in the reactor and identifying the types of bacteria that are active in both the solid and liquid phases. Enumerating the numbers of bacteria responsible for an observed change is necessary to compare the activity of different isolates. For selection and identification of bacteria during the development stages of a project, and for monitoring an operational process, the recognition of different species will be of importance. Methods for the taxonomic discrimination of bacterial species rely on observations, different culturing techniques, and the degree of DNA base homology between isolates. A method reported recently uses IR spectroscopy for comparisons between isolates. This spectroscopic method and its application is discussed.

Although mining is an old industry its management is quite a new science, and its complications are now being recognised as demanding expert knowledge in many branches of technical and professional education. Not the least amongst these isaccountancy, for probably its most important problem is "How to control the expenditure." Unlike most businesses a mining company stands almost entirely in the light of a purchaser in the world's markets, and not as a seller, except say for product so the established and perfected systems of modern industries cannot be adopted for mining purposes. For this reason it has been left for late years to consider the matter seriously, and now a number of well-managed concerns have devised costs systems to suit their own requirements.Very little, however, has been published and even that is disjoined and difficult to make use of. Some of the costs systems in vogue, although elaborate and imposing, are not of very great value for keeping check on wasteful expenditure, or for displaying the commercial effect brought about 'by any particular change in practice, or by an addition or alteration to a portion of existing plant.

For a hydrocyclone of fIXed geometry, DC, Di, DO and ? are constants, the variable parameters affecting the performance are Qi, Fi, Du and H. (See Appendix 2 for definition of symbols).The relationship between d50c, Qi, Fi, Du and H gives models which can effectively be used for performance predictions. Such models have already been established by Lynch et al and by Plitt.These models have been tried in a limited manner under continuous operating conditions for on-line cowol. For on-line control effective and accurate instrumentation is required for which a new set up is proposed. Using this set up, a new model was established. A feature in this model is that deviations from the norm of operational parameters affecting d50c were considered. It is shown that these deviations generated by the disturbance of one or more of variations in the parameters, can be monitored by a computer and suitable signals generated to control servo mechanisms for restoring the required d50c value.The logic followed in developing the computer software is described and the application of the model is indicated.

AT Broken Hill, N.S.W., where flotation is tbe final stage in concentration, the gangue minerals are discharged as an aqueous pulp, and water recovery from the pulp being essential, provision must be made for the clisposal of the solids and for the return of the clear water to the cemcentrating mill circuit. This water also contains an appreciable quantity of flotation reagents, and is more effective for flotation than supply water.In the development of a scheme for the disposal of large quantities of residues, several of the more important factors for consideration are:(a) Tonnage to be handled.(b) Grain size of residues and pulp density.(c) Dewatering of residues and return of clear water to mill circuit.(d) Possible uses of residues.-A varying proportion of sand residues is used for underground filling, and to a limited extent for yoncrete making and other engineering work.(e) Choice of a suitable dumping area. - Before deciding upon this area consideration will be given to possible future operations so that the dump will not be likely to interfere with any development which may be necessary. In this paper, a comparative performance evaluation of geostatistical, spectral, and fractal methods is made for short-scale variability prediction. The algorithms compared are: sequential Gaussian simulation method; a random fractal algorithm based on the generalised stochastic subdivision method; and a spectral simulation approach adopted for direct multi-dimensional simulation. The data for this study have been obtained from a mined out coal property. As this property was being mined, a 7315 m by 7315 m (24000 ft by 24000 ft) coal block was extensively sampled at an approximate spacing of 107 m (350 ft) and the 60-ton samples were analysed for sulphur in the 1.50 float gravity fraction. This data set is used here with the three methods to generate the simulated realisations, which are analysed for semivariogram reproduction and for simulation errors. Although all three methods converge to the true semivariogram in an average sense, the coefficient of variation of the average semivariogram for the Fourier integral method is minimum. The realisations generated by the sequential Gaussian method have minimum mean simulation error. The choice of a simulation method based on variability reproduction and simulation errors remains difficult.

Since the last occasion on which I spoke to you on this subject there has been a considerable increase in the mechanical ventilation of Western Australian mines.The following table compares the figures for 1939 with those of 1941. The type of fan most commonly used is the limit load fan. On account of its higher mechanical efficiency it has very largely superseded the multivane fan with forward curved blades.Two fans of the propeller type are in use and these have given very satisfactory service. This type of fan also has a high mechanical efficiency particularly at the correct duty for maximum efficiency.The maximum efficiencies obtainable from the various types are, for "multivane" 670/0, for "limit load" 75%, and' for aerovane 7810/0.References to propeller fans with variable pitch have appeared in the technical press, but no detailed d~scription has been issued. The advantages of these fans for mine ventilation are not obvious. An aeroplane is required to operate over a wide range of duties, while the speed of the motor for maximum efficiency is pl'actically constant. In such circumstances the propeller can be adapted to the particular work it has to do by varying the pitch of the blades. In a mine the speed of the fan can be varied to suit.the conditions, and it would appear that variable pitch is not necessary while there is a reasonable range of fans to choose from.The question of the correct position for the fan still comes in for considerable discussion. Exhausting fans at the surface have the support of time and custom, and in many cases this represents the only reasonable arrangement. Such fans should be fitted with an evase, especially in the case of fans with a high outlet velocity such as the aerovane types.It is claimed that there are advantages in having the fan at the surface where it is readily available for inspection and maintenance. Experience has shown that these advantages are more apparent than real. Fans will run for long periods with no attention other than occasional greasing and cleaning, and modern electric motors will run without attention for very long periods.In some instances the expense of a power cable to take current to the fan may be saved by placing it on the surface, but in the majority of cases...

JUST prior to the war the Broken Hill South Ltd: raised, on the average, 6628 tons of ore per week, all of which was crushed and treated in the 4-section gravity mill and the slime flotation plant, for the recovery of lead concentrate carrying silver. The sandy residues from that treatment were railed to the treatment plant of the Amalgamated Zinc (De Bavay's) Ltd. for the recovery of zinc concentrate by flotation, on the joint account of both companies. Subsequent to that-since 1916-approximately 1000 tons of old dump slime were also treated weekly for the recovery of lead and silver as slime-lead concentrate.PLANT CAPACITYUnder this programme the Babcock and Wilcox boiler plant of 8 boilers was taxed to such an extent as to call for the installation of two additional boilers, each of 2690 sq. ft. of heating surface and 55 sq. ft. chain-grade area.The electric generators and the air compressors of the old powerplant were also loaded to their maximum capacity. In view of the fact that the old power-plant had been added to from time to time since 1901, and that further extension was notpossible, and as it was not, moreover, an economical arrangement, the whole question of power generation was reconsidered. The considerations that determined the installation of entirely new plant were as follows:(1) The need for more compressed air for underground work and more electric current for the extension of the slime-flotation plant for the recovery of zinc, as well as lead, as slime concentrates. The reasons for choosing autogenous grinding for the new Warrego concentrator of Peko Mines N.L. are discussed and the ores to be treated in the concentrator are described. The mill was designed on the basis of pilot tests carried out at Cobar and the performance of the mill has been most satisfactory both in its metallurgical and mechanical aspects. An empirical technique has been developed to predict mill performance for change in feed rate or feed size and a mathematical model of the mill is being developed for simulation and control work. The weight and size distribution of the mill load was determined at one set of operating conditions for use in the mill model.
