Graded macadam slag base has been used successfully by the Department of Main Roads, N.S.W., in the construction of Expressways. However, the use of graded macadam in urban conditions introduces problems which can be avoided by the use of material meeting the specification outlined in M.R. Form 744. This paper outlines the rationale behind the technical requirements of the specification for the "Supply of natural gravel or crushed rock for road pavement (bitumen surfaced) M.R. Form 744". A blend of materials produced from slag is proposed as a potential solution for the production of slag base which would be suitable for use in urban construction or maintenance of roads.

Transport infrastructure constitutes, since always, an essential link between regions, countries and continents, for economical, commercial and human purposes. Permanently growing mobility needs, which are encountered in the whole world, lead to a more and more clear necessity to increase and modernise these transport infrastructures, as well in quantity as in quality, for all transport modes, and for all what is able to be transported, from people to consumption goods and energy. With only very few exceptions, transport infrastructure achievements have for long been the concern of the sole public authorities, at the various levels, which put them, mostly free of charge or at very low cost, at the disposition of the user or the customer.

Equilibrium in the reaction H2(g) + [%0] (in liquid copper) = H2O (g) was investigated at temperatures between 1200 -and 1350°C with p(H2Oj/p(H2) ratios between 1 to 15. A semi-microbalance was used for direct measurement of dissolved oxygen in molten copper. Oxygen was found to obey Henry's law under the experimental conditions used. By the 1990's Australia could be the largest coal exporter in the world and one of the few industrialised countries potentially able to supply the shortfall in its domestic oil requirements by utilizing its oil shale and coal resources to manufacture synthetic oil. The major challenge to both industry and government in implementing the new role for Australia will be to ensure that their actions and policies enable the timely mobilization of resources needed to meet the potential demand for energy, both domestic and overseas. Australia's potential for coal production and exports and for the production of oil from shale and coal are discussed and the potential constraints to development Examined.

Gallium occurs at above background levels in most samples collected from 11 of the major geothermal areas in the Taupo Volcanic Zone. Concentrations of Ga in the 48 samples ranged from 8 to 144 mg kg-' and varies widely from place to place within each geothermal area. Gallium is contained within the alumino-silicate structure of clay in the mud, having substituted mainly for Al. Suggested deposition mechanisms for Ga also involve co-precipitation with Sb, As, and SiO. colloids. Digestion trials, carried out to determine extraction conditions for possible commercial exploitation, showed that heating the mud to 500 -600¦C for 1 hour followed by acid/alkali treatment gave complete recoveries.

The treatment meIhods selected for the concentrator at Cobar Mines Pty. Ltd. called for a high degree of automatic control of both the grinding and flotation sections.The resulting concentrator layout includes a central control room overlooking both grinding and flotation sections. The control room houses process recorders, controllers, and indicators. together with motor stopstart stations and alarms.Plant instrumentation includes load cells and variable speed hydraulic drive feeders for feed-rate control of autogenous mills, together with nuclear density gauges, differential flow transmitters, and pneumatic control valves for water and pulp density control.Flotation cell pulp levels are controlled by floats and pneumatic actuators; flotation reagent controls include magnetic flowmeters and time-operated solenoid valves.

In the hard rocks of the Nordic countries of Norway, Sweden and Finland underground works have a long tradition. Today the subsurface has been taken into use for a wide variety of purposes. In this paper only the more uncon- ventional examples are described such as caverns for drinking water, sand bunkers, molasses silos, wine and liquor stores, cold stores, heat storage, waste disposal and state archives. The particular use of unlined high pressure tunnels and socalled air-cushions for hydropower schemes is discussed. The dual use of subsurface air-raid shelters for sports activities seems to be a special Nordic tradition. Some cost figures are given and the advantages of using the underground is Discussed.

Concentrates produced from MnO2 and Fe203 ore fines have been targeted as potential feedstocks for direct metallurgical processing. Prereduction of pyrolusite-rich Mn02 sands to MnO has been investigated in batch and continuous experimental bubbling fluidised beds using CO-H2 reducing gas mixtures. This process has been found to produce a high grade feedstock suitable for smelting to ferroalloys or acid digestion for chemicals production. Similarly, production of highly metallised direct reduced iron (DRI) from hematite ore fines has also been investigated in batch bubbling bed reactors. Programs to characterise the reduction kinetics, fluidisation behaviour and defluidisation phenomena for both feedstocks are currently in progress to enable optimum process conditions to be determined.

Legislation up to the early 1950s prevented the mechanical extraction of pillars. The mines operating at that time had formed extensive areas of pillars. When permission for the mechanical extraction was gazetted, conventional equipment was employed for pillar extraction and generally using hand mining systems. The mid-fifty's saw the of continuous miners. These machines eliminated the disadvantages of conventional equipment and the necessity for multiple working places. Some new layouts for panels emerged; however, actual extraction methods of pillars still followed closely that of hand mining. During the early sixty's the extraction of standing or new formed pillars was undertaken by the "open-end lift" or a "split and lift" method.

"This paper discusses the successful use of bituminous geomembranes (BGMs) in mining applications since their development in 1974. It explains and illustrates the structure of a BGM composite, which is a geomembrane manufactured by impregnating a polyester geotextile with a compound of bitumen, elastomer and filler. Examples of applications of BGMs in the mining industry are also presented in the following contexts.Storage of solid waste: storage of mining waste at mines in Canada heap leach pads in France, Peru, Chile and Turkey at the base of a mining waste landfill in Brazil capping of solid mining waste in Chile and Canada temporary capping of mining stockpiles in Australia (with possible reuse of the BGM for other works).Examples of the application of BGMs for the storage of liquid waste in mining containment reservoirs in Canada, Guatemala and Peru will also be given.For each example given, reasons are supplied that supported the choice of BGMs by the clients and consultants, drawn from the following advantages of the BGM:BGMs have excellent puncture strength, due to the internal polyester reinforcement, as well as excellent ultraviolet resistance. This often eliminates the need for a cushion geotextile or cover soil over the BGM.BGMs have a very long life expectancy, in excess of 300 years, in subsoil conditions (Breul et al, 2004).BGMs can be installed in very harsh climatic conditions. They are suitable for high wind environments as their heavy mass per square metre makes them resistant to wind uplift. The low coefficient of thermal expansion means that BGMs are suitable for installation in mines where very low or very high temperatures are expected. This reduces construction delays and allows for a quicker use of the mining facility.The fact that the BGM can be installed by the mine’s own workforce, after appropriate training from the BGM manufacturer, allows for a more flexible construction sequence on the mine.Ability of the BGM to connect to other materials such as concrete, steel, rock and other geomembranes that may be on the mine site.The technical advantages of a BGM enabled the engineering consultants to prepare solutions for their mining clients that had a lower environmental risk, had a faster completion schedule and were overall a cheaper option than with a polymeric geomembrane.CITATION:Breul, B and McIlwraith, R, 2015. In this paper, life cycle assessment methodology has been used to assess the variations in water use associated with different metal production and processing routes and provide insights into the value derived from water usage in the minerals sector. Using water consumption data derived from the literature it has been shown that the æcradle-to-gateÆ water consumption (or embodied water) for production of the various metals considered in the study ranged from 2.9 m3/t for steel up to 252 087 m3/t for gold. The results largely reflect the grade of the initial ore used to produce each metal, and can be approximated by the following equation:W = 167.7 G - 0.9039 where: W = embodied water (m3/t refined metal) G = grade of ore used to produce metal (per cent metal) The study showed that indirect water consumption in the metal production life cycle, in particular that due to electricity generation, can make a significant contribution to the embodied water value, eg aluminium production. When expressed in terms of m3/t ore, the results for all metals considered indicated that the embodied water is roughly, on average, three times the water consumption of the mining and concentration stage. It was also shown that the economic value per m3 of water consumed for the minerals industry exceeds that for the agricultural and industrial sectors, supporting the view that allocating water resources to the minerals industry has a strong underlying economic basis. Water reforms currently taking place in Australia aim to address issues such as competition for water access, reduced security of supply and increase in cost. Consequently the minerals industry, along with others, can be expected to come under increasing pressure to reduce fresh or raw water use and to integrate water use across sectors. While water recycling is an obvious candidate to help reduce water consumption in the minerals industry, issues such as water quality, among others, will influence the extent to which this can be achieved. In addition, wastewater volumes can be minimised using techniques such as pinch analysis to establish and use the minimum water requirement for the process. The use of dry or near-dry processing technologies, for which the demand for water is small or zero, may be a more radical solution to the water consumption problem; however, it is possible that the introduction of dry processing would bring with it a new set of problems, including dust.

The BIOX« process for the treatment of refractory gold ores and concentrates has been commercially in operation for 18 years. A total of six BIOX« operations have been successfully commissioned since the commercialisation of the process. Four of these BIOX« plants are still in operation today. There has been a renewed interest in the process the past few years with two BIOX« plants, the Suzdal plant in Kazakhstan and the Fosterville plant in Australia, scheduled for commissioning during 2004. Four new projects are also in various stages of development and are currently scheduled to be commissioned during 2005 and 2006. Research into the process are currently focussed on the two highest operating cost items for the commercial operations, namely power for agitation and air dispersion and cyanide consumption during leaching. Laboratory aeration and agitation testwork using the A340 up-pumping agitation system has shown that similar mass transfer rates can be achieved at slightly higher agitator power. The up-pumping system, however, eliminates the need for a separate blower and sparger system as air is introduced into the slurry from the slurry surface. The use of the thermophile bacteria as the final oxidation step during biooxidation has shown great promise. Reductions in cyanide consumption of up to 50 per cent were achieved when using the combination mesophile and thermophile process compared to standard BIOX« product solids. The combined process takes advantage of the milder oxidising conditions of the well known BIOX« process for the bulk of the oxidation and then uses the high temperature thermophile bacteria to complete the oxidation. The ASTERÖ process for the biological degradation of cyanide and thiocyanate containing effluent solutions has been proven to be efficient and stable. The process uses an activated sludge system with a residence time of approximately six hours in the sludge reactor. Heavy metals and metal cyanide species have also been shown to be removed successfully from solution.

A static equilibrium mathematical model of the lead,flotation circuit at The Zinc Corporation Limited is developed to permit the feasibility of applying computer control techniques to be studied. The model is based on the relationship between the cumulative recovery of a mineral species R from n flotation cells or assemblies in a unit given asR = M(1-(1 - p)?)where M is the maximum possible: recovery and p is the probability of flotation for the particular mineral.The verification of this relationship by data from pilot plant cell-to-cell and plant open flow flotation units shows that these systems behave as if the probability p is constant for each cell or assembly of anyone unit. It is also concluded from this study that mineral recovery is independent of the head assay. Two consequences of this probability relationship, are demonstrated.1. The total recovery from an open flow unit is enhanced by increasing the number of flotation assemblies but maintaining a constant flotation time and total air addition.2. The rougher and scavenger capacity required to recover a bulk lead-zinc concentrate is approximately half that used for selective flotation.The static equilibrium model is derived by solving a series, of mass balance equations which incorporate the recovery-probability relationship for each type of flotation unit. It is used to calculate the complete metallurgy of the circuit for any arrangement of cells knowing only the plant feed assays and the probabilities of flotation for the three mineral types, galena, marmatite, and gangue for rougher, scavenger, and cleaner flotation. The high degree of prediction obtained is demonstrated by comparison with plant results.Pulp flowrate is the principal variable affecting the accuracy of the present model. Work is in progress to establish this effect and permit the derivation of a dynamic model. Even so, the static model is valuable in its present form for the analysis and design of circuits, and optimisation studies using computer services have been conducted.

Multiple indicator kriging (MIK) has been used in the minerals industry for some decades. As one of the non-linear estimation methodologies, MIK has advantages related to resolving multiple or mixed populations, high variability data and strongly skewed distributions. Applying the MIK methodology requires a lot more effort when compared to other non-linear methodologies, for example localised uniform conditioning. This is due not only to the variogram modelling for multiple indicators, but the validation is also very important because the panel model is fundamental for follow-up work, including the generation of recoverable resources at the local or SMU scale. Apart from this, only a few reported case studies of MIK have documented post-processing of the estimated modelled distribution, representing the probability distribution at point scale at un-sampled locations. The MIK post processing should include the change of support from the point scale to the panel scale, and then the extraction of quantile values from the panel conditional cumulative distribution function (CCDF) for localisation of grades into the SMUs within each panel, based on a ranking estimate marking the SMUs from high to low. In this paper, we present a case study on a gold deposit with the MIK method with full-post processing implemented for recoverable resources. The MIK point estimate was carried out with an indirect lognormal change of support from point to panel scale, and localisation was done with a custom script. The localised uniform conditioning (LUC) method was also applied for comparison purposes. The comparison shows that MIK has advantages compared to LUC when comes to capturing the high-grades, especially when mixed or varying anisotropy is present within the mineralisation.

Determination of the adsorbed layer composition and structure at molecular and atomic levels and understanding adsorption mechanisms and dynamics are vitally important for the preparation of surface layers with specific functions. Direct information, at a molecular level, about mineral surface composition, its structure and surface distribution is crucial to perform an efficient separation process for mineral beneficiation. This information is equally important for modifying surface properties of industrial minerals for specific applications such as: fillers, composites, weathering resistance, etc. An understanding of the mechanisms and kinetics of the interaction of first adsorbed organic molecules with mineral surfaces is a fundamental requirement for the prediction and control of the macroscopic surface properties governing the efficiency of separation technologies or new material formulations. The developed infrared external reflection technique has a unique ability to study interface phenomena, at a molecular level, on heterogeneous substrates. The variety, precision and reliability of information about the interface phenomena delivered by this technique is superior to any other single technique. The experiments are fast and non-destructive. High sensitivity (starting from 20 per cent of the monolayer) in situ collected information in a multiphase system, even in the region of strong absorption of the substrate, makes this technique a very valuable experimental tool. The complexity of the recorded reflection spectra, their sensitivity to variations of the optical properties of all bulk and surface components and their spatial distribution in the system under investigation, are in fact the major strengths of this technique. A few examples of the application of this multi-diagnostic technique, for monitoring surface modifications of semi-soluble minerals for selective flotation, will be discussed in detail in this paper.

The tangible effects of leakage are presented graphically, and a technique for quantifying the leakage characteristics of a ventilation column using the æSolveÆ capabilities of a common spreadsheet is demonstrated. A case study of a working decline in Western Australia is used to demonstrate the potential for more realistic design of development ventilating systems, and for more cost effective management of the condition of the duct.

The necessity of effective dust suppression measures during excavation work is just as uncontroversial in tunnelling as it is in mining. In many respects, in fact, the applied technology is comparable. Notwith- standing, given more careful appraisal, it becomes evident that very different starting conditions exist in both these fields: In mining, there are for instance, well organised firms, which in many cases have been active for several decades, carrying out the required drivage and winning operations - and although there are also experienced firms in tunnelling, these generally speaking form a joint venture in order to accomplish a certain project. These "tunnelling firms" which are formed for a short term, normally only exist for a period of two-to three years. They con- stantly reorganise themselves: from the site supervising engineers by way of the foremen and shift overseers to the gangs working on site. The "firm's headquarters" are also re- located when a new project is started up. Then of course, there is often pronounced fluctua- tion among the crews of a single tunnelling project. Seen from this point of view, a safety expert in tunnelling has a far more difficult task than one in mining. He has not the advantage of knowing every corner of the mine for years if not decades on end, of being familiar with the overall organisation of the enterprise let alone knowing many of the men at the face. This ideal prerequisite for effec- tive decisions pertaining to suitable measures for industrial safety and accident prevention taking all weaknesses into consideration given the interplay of the most varied system com- ponents, can practically only be arrived at in mining.

Water is a limited and precious resource in Australia. Because of the increasing demand for water from all sectors of the economy and the variability in supply, efficient management of water resources is of vital importance. The national water reform agenda has provided a strong impetus to all states and territories to progressively move towards more efficient and sustainable water management. The Queensland Water Act 2000 is the legislative framework for providing water for the environment and for planning for the security of supply to water users. The comprehensive water planning process prescribed in the Act results in new tradeable water allocations that are separate from land. These water allocations are well specified and can be traded on a permanent or temporary basis. Trading of water allows it to move to its highest value use, thereby encouraging the most efficient distribution of this limited resource. In addition to transferring ownership of water allocations, it is also possible to change the attributes of the allocation, such as the location from which water may be taken. Changes to water allocations are subject to approval from the resource manager. Pre-testing allows for certain changes to be approved very quickly, making the trading process more streamlined and cost effective. Temporary trades, or seasonal water assignments, currently account for the majority of water trades in Queensland. However, permanent trading activity is expanding steadily as old water entitlements are converted to tradeable water allocations and as the market matures. The permanent trading market provides significant opportunities to the mining sector. It allows mining companies to buy water allocations at market prices without compromising environmental outcomes or causing third party impacts.
