AustraliaÆs opal and sapphire mining industry has fallen from its peak in the 1980s and 1990s into a significant low today. This is not due to exhaustion of the resource, but instead an over-reliance of the Australian miner on achieving a fair price for the gemstone product from offshore middlemen dealers. Gemstone and geological research is also at a low as Federal higher education expenditure has fallen with research institutions relying increasingly on private funding in an environment of restricted autonomy and flexibility for researchers. What little remaining research skills the universities have is being bled into the private sector as a result of the mining boom and encouraged by lower than average academic salaries. Nevertheless, some highly innovative research has been taking place, often by self-funded individuals and retired academics simply with a desire to advance the understanding of the particular branch of science in which they are interested. New models for the formation of sapphire and opal are now beginning to be applied to the exploration for these gemstone commodities. This research, together with well thought out plans for managing the gemstone product through its value-adding steps to the jewellery retail level, has the potential to bring about a resurgence in the Australian gemstone industry.

Sheaves are a critical safety component in a winding system and are expected to survive such extreme loading events as rope break. Sheave designs have often been developed and evolved empirically, consequently many existing sheaves are not necessarily subjected to the detailed analyses that are possible using todayÆs design tools. The design philosophy for sheaves is that the rope should be the weakest link in the system so that associated equipment can function safely for any load up to rope break. A number of failure mechanisms must be considered, but buckling is often prominent. During the course of investigating the feasibility of upgrading the hoisting capacity of a winding system, the capacity of all critical components was reviewed. The sheaves in the system were found to have insufficient spoke buckling capacity for the specified rope. A proposal to increase the spoke buckling capacity by connecting spokes together using a simple tie arrangement was evaluated and found ineffective. An alternative tie arrangement concept was developed and evaluated and shown to be adequate. This paper describes the finite element model, analysis approach and results for the original sheave and the two modifications. The contribution of the sheave rim to the total buckling capacity is evaluated. Some practical issues for spoke tie modifications are discussed.

What is the meaning of the Life of a Mine (LOM) if that mine results in a requirement for water treatment in perpetuity? ‘In perpetuity’ is of course a duration with no relationship to a Life-of-Mine or what might rightly be regarded by external stakeholders as a fair and reasonable post-mine recovery period. It exceeds the life span of investors, mine managers and governments, indeed even of capital markets as we know them, and of corporate and individual memories.In mine and mine closure planning, decisions are usually based at least to a significant extent on traditional economic analysis underlain by discounted cash flows (DCF). For investments in income-producing facilities, such as mining development and equipment, and ore-processing plant and equipment, this analysis reflects commercial reality and allows for comparison of competing investments. However, for environmental and social infrastructure, the same analysis using the same input parameters, especially the discount rate applied to cash flows, can lead to a bias against the adoption of best practices for non-investor stakeholders. Recent works suggest that dehydration of subducting slab and consequent hydration and partial melting influences the dynamics of mantle wedge. Plums originating form the subducting slab due to Rayleigh-Taylor instability are responsible for heterogeneous composition of the mantle wedge. Also, occurrence of partial melt in the mantle wedge can trigger dynamic processes like exhumation of UHP rocks in intra-oceanic settings or can influence characteristics of the subduction tectonic regime. One does not need to travel too far back in time to find that the manpower requirements for new projects were focused mainly on: ò plentifulness of supply; ò cheapness of use; and ò fitness for use. These were primarily quantitative considerations and corresponded with the dominant view of labour as a commodity. Qualitative considerations were not very evident with the exception of judgements of industrial militancy. It was not unusual for areas of known militancy to be excluded from the recruitment net (eg Captain's Flat, Broken Hill, Pilbara).

A basic method for designing reasonable jig cycles for movable-screen jigs is presented in this paper. The reliability and effectiveness of the designed jig cycle was verified with tests performed on an artificial mixed material. An iron ore (12 - 100 mm) from Huashugo Iron Mine, Jiuquan Iron and Steel Company, was treated in the TJD-75 movable-screen jig using the designed jig cycle. A good result was achieved. The procedure presented here should provide a reliable technique for the design of a commercial movable-screen jig.

The tragedy of the Moura No. 2 incident has lost much of its emotional mileage for those organisations that thrive on loss and suffering. However, for the families, workers, mine owners and operators in the Queensland underground coalfields, the challenge of delivering a positive outcome, though well underway, is in its infancy. The pressure created by interested parties is necessary for overcoming the inertia involved in change; but they cannot deliver the change. The responsibility ultimately resides at each individual minesite with the people who work there each day.

The Republic of Kazakhstan has well developed mining and metallurgical complex. The effect of operating parameters of a shaking table on the separation of mixed quartz-magnetite artificial feed has been experimentally investigated by use of laboratory-scale shaking table. Based on a great number of experimental data collected, the multi-variate non-linear model of shaking table has been developed. The model allows for the calculation of the product grade and recovery. A computer model has been programmed, for inclusion in a software package for the simulation and optimisation of shaking table if the feed characteristics and the concentrate grade are given.

King Island Scheelite had been using dealer modified front end loaders for two years when in 1974 it started to increase production. Suppliers were then quoting long deliveries for underground diesel trackless mining equip- ment, and the Company was forced to modify surface machines which had become redundant as production from the open cut phased out. The results were generally successful and encouraged further adaptations. Drill jumbos excepted, the Company now uses only converted surface machines in areas worked by diesel engined equipment and for all support and auxiliary functions.

Over the last few years several important developments have taken place in the Electro- lyte Purification Plant at Copper Refineries Pty. Ltd. A fully automated system for the continuous removal of arsenic has been develop- ed. A submerged combustion process for the removal of nickel has been developed to a stage where patent coverage has been obtained in most of the copper producing countries. A plant has recently been commissioned for the production of Tetra Cupric Arsenate, which it is hoped will find a ready market in the timber preservation industry.

The results of a geostatistical analysis of geochemical data obtained from field measurements are described in the paper. Q values derived from seismic signal rise times for different travel paths in the rock masses were used in the study. Cross-hole seismic measurements made at surface and underground sites formed the basis for the work. Geostatistical estimation of average l/Q values for area of the rock were compared with geological interpretions of rock type distributions. Reasonable correlations were obtained between the two methods of rock quality estimation.

To compare open circuit lead primary rougher results at Mount Isa Mines Ltd., eleven surveys were made over five weeks of plant operation with varying ore sources, including a specially hauled sample of 100% Black Star ore. Three of the surveys which represented extremes in performance were selected for sizing, cyclosizing and assaying for lead, zinc and iron. A comparison of the flotation kinetics has revealed the similarities (including common problems) and differences for the surveyed ores. The concepts of entrainment and collectorless flotability are used to aid interpretation of the kinetic data.

Geotechnical investictations and monitoring have been integral to development of the Porgera Gold Mine. The steep, unstable terrain has required a program for monitoring of slopes and foundations which includes survey stations, borehole inclinometers and piezometers. Case studies of the Maip Pass landslide, Yakatabari land-slide, Anawe Plant Site CIP pond excavation and batter, and a load test study for mine waste dumps are presented.Monitoring is needed to ensure that geotechnical risk is kept to a minimum. A vigilant program will be required for the life of the mine.

To finalise the arrangement and details of the headframe to be erected over the new No. 3 Shaft, the haulage and winding equipment requirements were first determined, then tentative designs were prepared to cover the needs of general shaft servicing work for men and materials, mullock and ore handling, and the probable requirements of a breaker station to be built adjacent to the headframe, which would provide for the crushing of the run-of-mine ore down to a size which would be suitable for feeding on to the concentrating mill.

The employment of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) is the default delivery method for the realisation of traffic, utility and primary resource underground space worldwide, with hundreds of kilometres completed safely each year. This is not yet the case for the mining sector in Australia, specifically underground coal mining. The safety advantages of TBM delivery when compared to New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) delivery, or that of drill and blast, remains unrealised.With coal access drifts ranging between 1000?m and 3000?m in length, the construction of these facilities using TBMs could be done in a fraction of the time when compared to current practice. TBM world records currently stand at 435?m/week or 1600?m/month for the 7.0?m to 10.0?m range. Resource owners and developers should embrace the opportunity to deliver access to their orebodies in only a few months, excluding machine assembly and disassembly time.There are challenges in utilising TBMs for construction of Coal access drifts, such as; TBMs generally being bespoke design, maximising capital efficiency for drift development, and geotechnical variances between projects. This paper explores safer and more cost-effective options. This paper also provides detail of how the configuration within a completed drift could be optimised to ensure all site specific needs are met with regard to future use of the drift. The paper also includes descriptions of the engineering solutions that are available for physical and atmospheric challenges specific to coal drift applications and how the TBM manufactures are adapting to the regulatory requirements are also covered.Due to downward pressure on high cost bases and ever increasing safety requirements the popularity of TBMs in the Australian mining sector can be expected to increase and eventually become the default delivery method for coal drift construction, building them cheaper, faster and?safer.CITATION:Sibthorpe, D, 2014. Hong Kong is one of the most rapidly developing cities in the world. With constant population growth and limited opportunities for space, the development of a fast and effective underground public transportation network is essential. Hong Kong’s Mass Transit Railway (MTR) Corporation is currently undertaking several large underground expansions to its existing network. Much of the excavation will be carried out using the drill and blast excavation method.Drill and blast excavation is common in Hong Kong and with the continued development of underground infrastructure the use of the drill and blast excavation method will increase. Although an effective method of excavation, the blasting vibrations caused during construction can have an adverse impact on surrounding structures and impose disruption on the local community.In order to minimise the risks associated with blasting vibrations, and to demonstrate that the impact on local stakeholders will remain within acceptable limits, it is generally necessary for a contractor to submit a blasting assessment report for approval by government authorities before blasting may commence.Continued increases in population density will force more infrastructure to be constructed underground. Tunnels and caverns are increasingly excavated in closer proximity to critical sensitive receivers. This leads to greater potential impacts on the community, tightening constraints on contractors and a higher level of confidence required for approval authorities. Finding a balance between the needs of the community and rising construction costs becomes more challenging.This paper presents a case study on how the blasting assessment report process has been successfully implemented for a major MTR project situated in a densely developed area of Hong Kong.
