An attempt has been made to investigate the performance of green pellet formation of the Daye magnetite concentrate from the weak-magnetic separation plant. The optimum conditions for the commercial production of green pellets was found through experimental research. The satisfactory size range for balling is 75 ¦ 3 per cent -200 mesh. The suitable moisture content is between 8.7 and 9.1 per cent and the optimum amount of bentonite added is between 1.5 and 2.5 per cent. The emphasis is on the size of the feed materials since the grinding fineness, which can be obtained at the plant, at most is 78 per cent -200 mesh. If the optimum fineness for the pellet formation is above this value, this means that the concentrate must be re-ground before balling. The results from experiments showed that a good quality green pellet can be attained by using materials below 78 per cent -200 mesh, which provides a strong foundation for the commercial production of green pellets.

Geological concepts are employed routinely in porphyry copper exploration at the area selection, prospect appraisal and deposit definition stages. Regional, district-scale, deposit-scale and laboratory-based concepts can all play a role, with the resulting porphyry copper models providing templates for the integration of geochemical and geophysical responses and interpretations. Of the 19 concepts and parameters selected for brief discussion, those relating to subdivision of porphyry intrusions, understanding of diverse and commonly complex alteration-mineralisation patterns and lithocap characterisation are undoubtedly the most influential in exploration. Several of them are of particular importance because of their role in promoting grade development. Additional belt-, district- and deposit-scale features are currently little used but hold promise, whereas others have less practical value but help in underpinning the evolving porphyry copper genetic model.CITATION:Sillitoe, R H, 2015. This paper shows how small calculators can be used for ball mill simulations. Two calculations are examined, the first to calculate the mill parameters and the second to predict the mill product. In the case of small programmable calculators the programs for two common models are given.

ABSTRACTMechanised cut and fill stoping in the Racecourse orebodies between II and 9 levels was started in 1964.Five stopes are in progress over the two level interval, extracting the full strike length (600-2,000 ft) of each orebody without transverse pillars.Each stope is served by a central 10 ft by 12 ft service intake ventilation raise and an 8 ft by 8 ft return air raise at each end of the stope. Each stope is divided into two sections for drilling. firing. mucking, and fillingto maintain steady production. All equipment is kept in the stope for one level lift stoping. Gardner-Denver 2 boom jumbos are used for uphole drilling and Wagner ST 5 Scooptrams for loading and transport to ore passes located in the footwall of the orebody. A Wagner PTIO is used for materials handling and scaling of the stope backs.Mill tailings, after one stage of cycloning are used to fill the stope, one section at a time. About 80 per cent of the water is removed by decantation while the remainder percolates through hessian-covered pipes and boxes.The ore is passed to 11 level where it is hauled by the 3 ft 6 in. gauge train to the tipple at the shaft area. The ore is crushed underground before hoisting to the surface.A performance of about 100 ton/manshift is achieved by the drilling, blasting, and mucking crews in the stopes.

Theories of ore genesis. have both practical and philosophical application-practical in that they influence our search for new ore bodies; philosophical in that they provide a test for our theories of petrogenesis-and our ingenuity.For example, the theory of granitization requires an explanation of ore genesis compatible with the general concepts of granitization.Our understanding of some processes of ore formation, such as supergene enrichment, or the formation of residual lateritic iron ores, is so complete as to permit of nq controversy.For other ores, like the oolitic iron ores of England and France, and elsewhere, or the segregations of chromite or ilmenite in basic igneous rocks, the broad principles are generally agreed on; dispute is limited to details of process.But for a wide range of ore deposits there is no such agreement. Completely incompatible hypotheses are advanced to explain' identical facts, and we have difficulty in finding new facts or criteria that will distinguish unambiguously between them.In thinking about such ores, a co:n;venient starting point is provided by Schneiderhohn's (1953) fourfold division of ore deposits:1. The secondary hydrothermal ore deposits occurring in Mesozoic-Neozoic cover strata of Europe.2. The "regenerated" younger ore deposits in Alpine type mountain chains.3. Post-Cambrian primary hydrothermal ore deposits.4. Ore deposits of the PreCambrian shields.To these we may add a fifth group:5. Stratigraphically controlled sulphide deposits.

Regions with extensive reserves of brown coal but with inadequate deposits of hard coal provide a particularly suitable field for the application of brown coal petrology.In fact, this discipline is indispensable where brown coal is to form the basis for high-quality products of upgrading. Both chemical and physical analyses are required in addition to the techniques employed in coal petrology, but it is the macropetrographic and the microscopic investigations that are of decisive and specific importance.Foremost among the methods of upgrading brown coal is briquetting. From the raw materials aspect the biochemical rank of coal (i.e. the type of deposit) and the coal variety (i.e. the lithotype) exert a marked influence on briquette strength. These are also the significant factors in the suitability of a brown coal for high temperature carbonization; here the demands on coal quality are even more exacting if adequately sintered and therefore high-strength lump chars are to be obtained. The principle applies also to the char from low temperature carbonization. There are close relationships between the tar yield and the remission of the coal.The reflectivity measurement therefore provides a rapid method for evaluating the suitability of a brown coal for low temperature carbonization. Similar correlations have been established between the content of extraction bitumen (raw montan wax) and the remission. Petrological investigations show that the quality of the coal bitumen is a function of the type of deposit and of the lithotype.

A small static bed was used to study the thermal cycles required for the heat hardening of pellets based on synthetic magnetite concentrates and a naturally fine hematite. This apparatus can be employed to yield broad process data for the design of a recuperative strand system operating on the magnetite concentrates.Various alternatives are given for a process to heat harden the hematite ore but a preference is given to the production of a self fluxing pellet. Bond types and general mineralogical structures are interpreted against the optimum firing cycle necessary to produce a defined quality of pellet.INTRODUCTIONThe work reported in this paper extends that on the "Heat Hardening of Artificial Magnetite Pellets", which was described at the International Symposium on Agglomeration, sponsored by the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers at Philadelphia, U.S.A. in April 1961. Whereas that work was of a more basic nature, serving to illustrate the suitability of artificial magnetites with various admixtures, to the application of heat hardened pellets, on this occasion the aim is to illustrate the procedures which were used to establish the dimensions of commercial recuperative strands for Australian raw materials.The nature of the pellet feed, Le. relatively uniform spheres of + i in.-Yi6 in. diameter, makes it possible to use small scale static pots for test work. The large increase in secondary industries in this country, during the war and post war periods, has caused a shortage of capacity for the production of merchant bar.To overcome this shortage, an expansion of rolling mill facilities has been undertaken by the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd. A small, but modern, merchant mill has been erected at Kwinana in Western Australia and a strip and skelp mill is under construction at Newcastle. The latter mill will roll strip and skelp at present being rolled by the Newcastle 10 in. Merchant Mill, enahling this mill to concentrate on merchant bar production.The Kwinana mill was installed to supply the Western Australian market. This state has a small population (approximately 658,000) and is not at present highly industrialised. It was necessary, therefore, to design a mill which would be capable of producing a wide diversity of sections and could be expanded as the demand increased. To begin with capital expenditure had to be kept within reasonable bounds. The design work for this mill, with the exception of a few specialised items of equipment, was carried out at Newcastle.All design work for the Newcastle mill was carried out by the lVIorgan Construction Co. of America. Although initially intended for rolling flat. products, the designers were asked to make the mill as flexible as possible, so that should the market for flat products decrease, this mill with additional equipment could undertake the rolling of medium sized sections.

The complexity in treating environmentally harmful impurities such as As, Sb, Bi from the base metal matte or metal in the smelting stage are responsible for the high cost of the refining process. The impurity capacities (such as arsenic, antimony and bismuth) of slags were calculated a priori using Reddy-Blander (RB) model. The capacity predictions were for a wide range of matte and slag compositions in copper smelting conditions. The calculated impurities capacities and impurity distribution ratios results are in good agreement with the available experimental and industrial slags data. The a priori knowledge of impurities is useful for reduction of energy consumption and enhanced environmental control in the current and future non-ferrous metal processes.

This paper discusses the requirements for a successful simulation modelling study, and the steps involved in the modelling process. Advantages and disadvantages of simulation are described, and a case study highlights how not to go about it. Two other case studies, for a decline truck haulage and a block caving production operation, are used to illustrate the types of variables whose impact may be investigated. Typical results are presented to indicate the sorts of presentation styles the author has found useful for conveying study results to project sponsors. Standard spreadsheet charting techniques can be very useful in this respect, but the possibilities are limited only by the imagination of the study team.

The concentrations of trace metals in deep hydrothermal solutions (~1 km depth, 200 to >300¦C) from modern hydrothermal systems in the Taupo Volcanic Zone, New Zealand, and Ladolam, Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea were obtained using a purpose-built downhole fluid sampler and ICP-MS analyses. The results range widely: gold (<0.1 - 23 ppb); silver (<3 - 2400 ppb); arsenic (100 - 18 000 ppm); antimony (2 - 1200 ppm); mercury (<1 - 78 ppb) and provide the basis for quantifying the flux and fate of metals as well as assessing their sources (Simmons and Brown, 2006, 2007). Mining Automation By Professor Hugh Durrant-Whyte, Australian Centre for Field Robotics and Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment, Department of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering, The University of Sydney Professor Hugh Durrant-Whyte summarised why the mining industry needs to automate and reviewed the current automation technology - its risks, costs and benefits. Why automate? The drivers for automation include: safety, productivity, quality control and reduced manning, equipment utilisation, maintenance, and organisation and planning. Durrant-Whyte recommended starting out with a picture of a fully automated mine and working backwards through a systematic analysis of benefit and risk. This also involves looking at the impact of the total automation on current mine design, and identifying the key technologies.

Spectacular high-temperature hot springs (æblack smokersÆ) on the deep ocean floor are producing economic concentrations of base and precious metals. Mining these seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) deposits is about to become a reality in 2010, subject to the timely issuance of permits. Three Australia-based private companies and two government agencies inJapan and Korea have exploration licenses or applications covering vast areas of the seabed in the western Pacific targeting SMS deposits. Technological and financial challenges for recovery of seafloor sulfide deposits are being met and mining these may be less environmentally deleterious than mining on land. The Mineral Science Laboratory of the Government Chemical Laboratories has recently investigated various procedures for the analysis of the platinum group metals (PGMs). This investigation covered a number of methods for the extraction and preconcentration'of the PGMs from a wide range of geological materials. The nickel sulphide extraction technique proved to be overall the most applicable procedure. Flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS), electrothermal atomisation atomic absorption spectroscopy (ETA-AAS), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) were examined for their suitability in analysing platinum group metals in solution. ETA-AAS and ICP-MS proved to be the instruments of choice due to their low detection limits.

Legislation for control of ventilation in New South Wales coal mines is contained in the Coal Mines Regulation Act, 1912, as amended. The standards set down in that Act were based on the needs of the industry at the turn of the century. Changes and additions to the original standards have been made to cater for mechaniz- ation of the industry and the introduction of modern developments such as the use of diesel equipment. Technological progress has been recognized by the requirement for monitoring of machines and return airways. The passing of the Coal Mines Regulation Act 1982 has ensured that there will be a revision and modernization of the regulations affecting day to day operations of the industry.

Green policies have gained momentum since the 1972 Stockholm Environment Conference. The environmental movement has influenced political initiatives both in New Zealand and abroad. Governments and international institutions have addressed local, regional and global environmental issues with varying degrees of success. New Zealand so far has not supported the United Nations' call for sustainable development in a,consistent manner.New institutions and new rules for resource management mean there are opportunities to look after the land in different and more ecologically sensitive ways than has happened in the past.The increasing influence of regional councils in resource management planning will have important implications for mining and mineral exploration. These trends are discussed and possible future events outlined.

Although giant strides have been made in the Australian mineral industry over the past quarter of a century in terms of mineral discoveries, self-sufficiency of commodities, contributions to exports and other aspects, there are unhealthy signs emerging which require attention. For instance there are 20 out of 34 discoveries of base metals, uranium and nickel which for a number of reasons await development. Some of the reasons for the standstill in the mineral industry are partly economic, partly due to competing land use, uncertainty in applying or, recognising the principle of crown ownership of minerals, and to some extent lack of appreciation of two closely related exploration activities referred to as development exploration and assessment Exploration.

A simple and rapid method for delennining gold and silver in carbon samples is described. The method involves dissolution of carbon ash in a strong oxidising medium of aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid. Gold and silver are determined in the resultant solution using atomic absorption speetrometry (AAS). The method is efficient and reproducible. Gold results are comparable to the standard fire assay results, with agreement of results within ± 5 per cent. The co-efficients of variation for gold and silver are 0.37 and 0.39 per cent respectively for six replicate analyses. The analysis of gold and silver in a batch of ten carbon samples can be completed in approximately four hours.
