The most common reason for gold-bearing deposits being refractory is the presence of sulphides; in many cases these interfering minerals contain arsenic, antimony, or other environmentally-sensitive elements. A number of processes have been proposed or developed for pre-oxidation of interfering minerals. In most cases developers have focussed on gold recovery and capital costs, with relatively little data on the deportment or form of these potentially harmful elements. This paper surveys recent work connected with pressure pre-oxidation processes. Data from pilot plant treatment of refractory gold materials, using the nitric acid Redox process, is discussed along with the attendant flowsheet and engineering implications. Four refractory gold-bearing materials have also been tested at the University of South Australia for arsenic and antimony deportments.

Rio Tinto Technology and the Rio Tinto Foundation for a Sustainable Minerals Industry have funded the development of a practical floating module that can reduce water losses through evaporation from water dams at mining and mineral processing facilities by about 75 per cent. The modules, which are also suitable for use by farmers and communities, were designed for easy deployment, to allow the water to æbreatheÆ, harvest rainfall and resist wind speeds of more than 100 km/h. A large-scale demonstration trial will be conducted at the Northparkes Mine, located near Parkes (New South Wales, Australia). The objective of the trial is to demonstrate to Rio Tinto business units, community, farming and government groups the moduleÆs operating costs and water saving potential.

This paper is concerned with the application of a probabilistic approach to the risk assessment of mining projects.In current practice, sensitivity analysis is the most commonly used deterministic approach of accounting for the uncertainties involved in mining project evaluation, while Monte Carlo simulation is considered to be the best probabilistic method available for the same purpose. The methodology of the approach proposed in this paper is as simple as that of sensitivity analysis. However, the results obtained can be more comprehensive than those obtained from Monte Carlo simulation. Various important statistical features, such as correlation and skewness, of the basic random parameters can be easily taken into account by the proposed approach. Example studies are demonstrated. Lotus 123 was employed for the associated probabilistic calculations.

Imerys Tableware New Zealand Limited has mining rights to four deposits of halloysite, which are located about 203 km north of Auckland, New Zealand. These primary deposits were formed by the hydrothermal alteration and weathering of rhyolite domes. Halloysite clay is currently being mined from two of these deposits and then processed for export markets. From humble beginnings in the mid 1950s, the Northland halloysite was processed initially for paper filler markets and then for higher value tableware and technical ceramic niche export markets. The paper will briefly cover the geology and processing of halloysite and then examine the history of New Zealand China Clays Limited, now Imerys Tableware New Zealand Limited and then look to its future as part of global industrial minerals company, Imerys.

Nelsen, Porter and Wilson (1996) provided some preliminary concepts for the design of the Melbourne City Link tunnels. At that time, the City Link project was in the early design phase whereas now it is nearing completion. This paper provides details of the actual design adopted for the various sections of the tunnels as well as some commentary on the design process. The tunnels form a critical element of the project and the design of both driven and cut and cover tunnel sections is a significant factor contributing to successful project execution. Geology, hydrogeology, site constraints, traffic management and program were important design inputs. Design for the cut and cover sections in particular varied significantly in response to these differing inputs.

The Snap Lake Phase I project initiated a subsampling campaign on the material (kimberlite/metavolcanic/granite) mined and treated for diamonds. The campaign was aimed at determining the optimum subsampling program to subsample the feed to the bulk sample plant (BSP) for the duration of a sampling campaign. This paper describes the application of GyÆs formula for determining the subsample size and other good sampling practices to determine this subsampling campaign. Three main issues are discussed: the use of a hammer sampler to sample off a moving conveyor and the practical experiment to determine the optimum subsampling program; bias introduced by laboratory equipment including two sizes rotary splitters; and variability of the feed material to the BSP over time.

The general level of awareness amongst members of the professions that they are faced with an increasing number of claims for breaches of their professional duty was dramatically heightened by the decision of Rogers J. at first instance in Cambridge Credit Corporation v Hutcheson (1985) 3 ACLR when the auditors of the failed company were found liable for breach of contract and faced a damages award of $145 million - well in excess of their insurance cover. No comfort should be found in the fact that this decision was overturned on appeal, for that result rested on the issue of whether there had been a causal connection between the breach of contract which had occurred and the loss suffered rather than on the fundamental principle of auditors' liability.

Dust derived from mining and handling of ore has been identified as a major concern for the mining industry in Australia and may be critical to the future viability of some resource industries (CSIRO, 1999). Operational techniques to derive accurate measurements of anthropogenic dust on vegetation and infrastructure are necessary for the long-term management and monitoring of the environment surrounding mining operations. Airborne hyperspectral VNIR-SWIR systems can potentially provide these monitoring data. This paper outlines a method developed for deriving quantitative measurements of dust quantity on mangroves using remotely-sensed airborne hyperspectral data. The results show that it is possible to detect and quantitatively map iron oxide dust distribution using properly calibrated airborne visible to short wave infrared (VNIR-SWIR) data.

Laboratory batch rod and ball milling tests were conducted on samples of Heavy Medium Separator (HMS) sinks from Renison Tin Limited. The product size distributions for this heterogeneous material were very different to similarly sized homogenous material previously reported by the authors. The effects of pulp density on product size distributions were only evident at pulp densities greater than 80 per cent solids. At high solids density, the major weight distribution product peak fell and broadened indicating less efficient breakage, particularly for rod milling. Tin distribution in the ground products was also affected by pUlp density, and there was always less cumulative per cent tin than cumulative per cent weight, ie there was no tendency for cassiterite to slime down to 10/lm.

There are a number of methods available for the determination of the fracture toughness of rock. Some of the most recognised methods include the hollow pressured cylinder, the short-rod, the chevron - edge-notched round bar in bending and the disc-shaped compact specimen. Most of these tests are difficult and expensive to conduct. In this paper the simple Brazilian testing of discs for tensile strength has been used to determine their fracture toughness. Tests were conducted on six different rock types and the values of the fracture toughness obtained for each type are in close agreement with the results of the well recognised the chevron edged types. Metsim is proving to be a powerful tool when designing a heap leach operation. The most useful outputs arc determining the fluctuations in pregnant solution recovery rate, make-up water rate, gold recovery rate. and pond levels. Detailed data are needed for input: a pad loading schedule, a mining rate schedule for each ore type, column leach test data for each ore type, column tests on water dynamics (ie hourly flow-out versus-in during saturation and drain-down), monthly rainfall and evaporation data, and proposed pond dimensions. These data allow 'what if' studies on application rates, leach rates, loading rates and other variables of interest. Examples will he given of modelling both a rectangular pad and a valley fill operation.

A laminar-flow furnace was used to study the combustion of four flotation concentrates (chalcopyrite, pyrite, galena, and sphalerite) in air at temperatures up to 1400¦C. A special- Iv developed two-colour pyrometer was used to measure the temperature of individual chalco- pvrite and pyrite particles as they underwent combustion. Chalcopyrite and pyrite ignited with very high rates of reaction at air tempera- tures above 480 and 600¦C respectively, forming molten products. Galena and sphalerite required temperatures in excess of 700 and 1200¦ respect- ively to attain equivalent rates of reaction. The high rates of reaction for galena and spha- lerite were caused by vaporization. A pilot plant has been constructed for the low temperature carboni-zation of Wallarah (N,S,W6) coal at the rate of 300 pounds per hour. The plant was built and tested at Australian Mineral Development Laboratories for Broken Hill Pty, Ltd. Char product was required within the specifi-cation 15.5 `S' 1 per cent volatile matter. The design was based c atz an entrained state carbonizer developed by Parry and U.S. Bureau of Mines co-workers at Denver, U.S.A. The method involved the carbonizatioan of fine coal by entrainment with air in an externally heated reactor.. The heat required for carbonization of tits coal was supplied to the be, both through the reactor walls and also by internal cambustion of products .

A new national-scale geochemical survey is under way inAustralia with the aim to provide energy and mineral explorers with state-of-the-art precompetitive data and information about the continentÆs potential resources. This low-density geochemical survey will provide a national geochemical data layer using consistent sampling medium and sampling, preparation and analytical methods. Large-scale geochemical patterns thus revealed are expected to point to new areas of exploration potential. The project is funded under the Onshore Energy Security Program. It is hoped that this new national geoscience dataset will help make Australia a more attractive destination for energy and mineral exploration investments. Traditionally, capital costs of major resource development projects have been estimated as a single amount to which a percentage accuracy has been assigned based on the method of preparation of the estimate, that is, on the amount of information available to develop the estimate.However, there is a growing recognition of the importance of a probabilistic approach to capital cost estimates, and of a more rigorous calculation of estimate accuracies and of the presentation thereof. Accuracies can be expressed with more certainty as a percentage of the estimate amount where the percentage represents one standard distribution on the probability curve for the capital cost of that specific project. Thus confidence levels can be stated for various estimated amounts - for example, it can be stated that there is an 85% chance that a stated amount will not be exceeded, or a 90% certainty that a (higher) amount will not be exceeded. Moreover, the right skewness of the probability distribution curve for most projects can be readily recognised and reflected in the evaluations. This enables senior executives and board members to have a clearer understanding of investment uncertainties, and the possible magnitude of commitments.

The main objective of this work was to develop, at a laboratory scale, a process for treating residues from the settling stage of water treatment so as to remove and recover the aluminium as sulphate. The chemical analysis of residues from different water treatment plants indicated that the aluminium content varied from 15 to 20 per cent w/w. By using the appropriate experimental conditions, it was found to be possible to leach most of the aluminium content. The pH value of the recovered water was suitable for it to be recycled to the water treatment process and the residue appears to be suitable as raw material for bricks. The process developed contributes to the sustainability of the water treatment process.

THE irregularity of the Mount Morgan ore body presents problems other than those for mining only. For irregularity of outline is coupled with irregularity of grade, and the ore varies so rapidly from profitable to non-profitable, and from highly siliceous to highly pyritic, that the task of estimating quantities and values of ore reserves is manifestly rendered a difficult one, while the actual disposal Of the broken ore demands constant supervision.Four classes of ore are handled. The oxidized ore, cheaply mined and cheaply treated, is obtained by quarrying from the top of the mountain. Below the 315-ft. mine level (measured from the original summit) sulphide ore comes in, and this is divided into siliceous sulphide ore (too siliceous for economic smelting), sulphide ore suitable for smelting, and ore too poor either to be smelted or to be treated by wet process with the siliceous ore. It is with these three latter descriptions of ore that this paper principally deals.Although the output from most stopes in the mine may usually be presumed beforehand to be either smelting or wet-treatment ore...

The following brief paper is intended, to apply to the concentration of the silver-lead ores at Broken Hill, New South Wales, generally, but more particularly to the process as applied to the ores in the Block 10 mine. The attached plans are similar inmany respects to those prepared, recently for the Block 10 company.Most of the information here given is already well known to those members who are conversant with the concentration practices of this field, but it is the writer's object to give just a few of those figures which he found difficult to obtain when first engaging in practical work. At that time no text-books were at hand from which it was possible to get sufficient details for practical working purposes.It is first supposed that the mine has been thoroughly explored and has been found to contain a lbde sufficient in size ·and quality to warrant the erection of a concentrating plant. The points then to determine are:-(1.) The quantity and cost of water available for steam-making and ore-dressing purposes.(2.) The most convenient site for the mill.
