Fleet management systems have been adopted by many open pit mines throughout the world and the resulting improvement in truck cycle times has been one of the most significant contributors to mine efficiency. Ongoing enhancements to fleet management systems such as interfaces for vital signs monitoring have given incremental efficiency gains. Each incremental improvement is another step towards a grand vision of a totally automated mine. A relatively new fleet management system is being integrated with two other technologies to provide a highly reliable platform for a networked information system which monitors mine machinery and production. The paper reviews the integration project, the features of the new mine site information network platform and the contribution to productivity and safety. The new fleet management system has a predictive truck dispatch algorithm. It also has a distributed database that replicates rapidly so that each machine in the fleet has an identical database, thereby making each machine aware of other machinesÆ locations on the site. High precision systems for navigating and monitoring machinery such as drills, dozers, draglines and shovels provide individual machine operators with cockpit style real-time information to increase their operational efficiency. The integration of the new fleet management systems capabilities with the high precision systems that provide production information, machine vital signs data and operator information means that the mine operations and maintenance managers have real-time access to the whole mine siteÆs production data. Such a mine monitoring and reporting system is dependent on reliable wireless communications and reliable positions. Positions in fleet management and high precision systems for open pit mines are usually provided by global positioning system (GPS). Other global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) such as Glonass, and in the future Galileo, will provide additional satellite cover; however, some parts of open pit mines do not have enough sky visibility for reliable GNSS positioning and so a new centimetre level wireless positioning system called Locata is being integrated with the fleet and high precision systems to augment and backup the GNSS positions. The final integrated system will provide the highest levels of reliable position-based information to all stakeholders in a mineÆs operation, ensuring gains in productivity and safety.

This paper looks at the design of the Bentayga raisebore with subsequent back analysis using a LiDAR survey. A search for LiDAR raisebore assessment publications shows little work has been done on this subject. The paper examines the empirical design and RS2 modelling assessment with the bored condition. The high resolution of the LiDAR enabled mapping of weak structures that were located on the geotechnical investigation hole the orientations of which could not be determined. In addition, the scan showed were water ingress was occurring, potential stress overbreak and structural controls on stability. The LiDAR results were able to confirm no additional support work such as a shotcrete liner is necessary. The LiDAR results have been analysed in one metre increments as volume of overbreak against the empirical stability criteria (McCracken & Stacey 1989). The future use of LiDAR mapping over a range of rock mass conditions will provide quantification of the established empirical assessment improving its reliability. It is also a useful and accurate tool to monitor long term stability of a raisebore due to stress change or ore pass due to wear.

"Current closure objectives and criteria are often difficult to achieve and are not delivering value for money outcomes at closure. Current mine closure processes tend to focus on rehabilitation and revegetation of landform structures to as close to premining condition as possible, rather than focusing on the functions of those structures and values they provided. Because mining has highly disturbed the environment, premining conditions and vegetation are often not achievable and objectives and criteria aimed at achieving close to these conditions have been shown to be very costly.The authors have developed a broader approach to developing mine closure plans that is based on environmental risk and gaining post-closure social, environmental and economic value. We think the focus should shift from trying to return the original landscape to returning functions and values provided on- and off-site. If it is not possible to return values on-site in a cost-effective manner, investment should be provided to deliver equivalent values elsewhere.This process can provide better stakeholder acceptance, deliver better environmental outcomes on the tenement and within the catchment and significantly reduce costs, whist fulfilling closure obligations.This framework should enable closure teams to: focus on the functions and services that are important to achieve as outcomes post-closure, rather than a focus on revegetation and replacing the premining biophysical structure engage meaningfully with stakeholders regarding closure outcomes and link outcomes to stakeholder values conduct transparent option evaluations that enable stakeholders to clearly understand the costs and benefits associated with each option and to participate in dialogue on option selection.We present examples of how the framework could be applied to identify alternate closure options that achieve equivalent value outcomes while reducing the costs of closing the mines.CITATION:Howard, B, Pershke, D and Jones, M, 2014. Mining and beneficiation can be described as sequential processes of separation of valuable minerals from waste. There is a great deal of interest in how the industry can be more effective – and efficient – with these processes. In particular, many mining companies are looking towards digital technologies to improve precision mining practices; that is, the targeted identification and separation of valuable ore from waste during the mining process. Flyrock produced by blasts in surface mining and quarrying is a major hazard that can result in serious injuries or property damage. This paper presents a fully integrated and automated approach for reviewing blast outcomes from a wide variety of rock blasting environments from the perspective of flyrock safety associated with blasthole collar ejections. The process is applied at a corporate level for an explosives service provider handling up to 100 blasts per day from mines, quarries and construction sites throughout the US.Flyrock risk minimisation has inspired research and the associated development of a reliable flyrock model to estimate flyrock ejection velocities and the resulting maximum projection distances of fragments. In spite of significant achievements in this area, flyrock incidents continue to occur, mostly due to implementation mistakes. An efficient preventive measure is continuous blasting process improvement that relies on on-site video recording, storage, automatic analysis and classification of the recorded blasts followed by the automatic generation of reports.In this paper, a novel blasting video analysis system that is capable of processing a large quantity of video records is presented. Blast analysis and parameter measurement are fully automated and are carried out using videos recorded with a conventional consumer camera. The blast video recording process does not require the use of surface markers, range poles or objects of a predefined size for scaling purposes.Although automatic video analysis is commonly used in many application areas, such as video surveillance, traffic monitoring and robotics, the algorithms that have been developed to recognise and track solid objects with well-defined shapes, textures and colours are not efficient at dealing with blasts, which, by their nature, have dynamically changing parameters. Moreover, very strong camera vibration caused by blasts that cannot be totally compensated by camera image stabilisers may cause conventional computer vision algorithms to fail.This paper presents novel computer vision methods developed for automatic tracking of the trajectory from a blast ejection point to the highest point reached by blast particles and the ejection velocity. The system also uses colour and motion analysis to detect the emission of toxic fumes during a blast. The solution is vibration tolerant and can differentiate foreground and background data, even in the presence of camera vibration. SAG Mill process control classically maintains the SAG mill volumetric filling within a set operating range. Typically a SAG mill weight measurement, by either bearing pressure transducers or load cells, is used as an inferred measurement of volumetric filling. To maintain volumetric filling within a set operating range the SAG weight setpoint use for process control requires regular review due to changes in SAG mill charge density (rock:ball ratio) and the wearing of mill liners. At Lihir Gold Mine in Papua New Guinea, the use of SAG mill weight for process control is additionally complicated by compromised load cells and drifting bearing pressure measurements. The need for an improved method of measuring and controlling volumetric filling led to the recent installation of the Outotec MillSense, a SAG mill toe angle instrument. World urban expansion puts constraints on the available land surface area of our major cities both for accommodating people as well as providing infrastructure and services whilst at the same time attempting to preserve the remaining natural environment. Whilst consideration is often given to underground planning for private and public transport infrastructure, the author is of the opinion that the current lack of underground planning of our cities that are suitable for underground development will have major long implications when finally the need for underground space planning is critical and ultimately recognised. This paper identifies the need for our city planners to integrate surface planning and underground planning as a ‘total planning solution’ where the city plan incorporates the elements of underground space planning as identified in this paper. Investigations by the author reveal that there are very few cities in the world that actually incorporate underground space planning in their city plans. The author uses the City of Brisbane as a case study for the potential introduction of underground space planning as part of the city plan. Despite efforts by the author to include the planning concept of underground commercial development in the latest Brisbane City Plan 2014 as well as four underground space workshops in Brisbane over the past 20 year through the Australasian Tunnelling Society (ATS), underground space planning for the City of Brisbane, apart from infrastructure projects, is not considered of significance to the City of Brisbane.CITATION:Robertson, A C, 2014. The mineral processing industry is in boom times. The focus on mill availability and therefore profitability has never been greater, as grinding mill maintenance often dictates the entire plant shut down duration. Advances in mill systemsÆ quality and reliability and the faster, safer relining afforded by RMEÆs Mill Relining Systems have significantly enhanced grinding plant availability and utilisation. Yet relining performance is still affected by the design and planning by a team of stakeholders long before the maintenance team set foot in the mill. For a greenfield grinding plant project, these team players include: 1. project owner, 2. project manager, 3. mill supplier, 4. liner supplier, 5. plant operating personnel, 6. plant maintenance personnel, 7. mill relining crew, and  8. mill reline system supplier (RME). The complex and sometimes competing design demands of mill construction and operation together with the pressure of tight timelines can result in even simple maintenance requirements being overlooked let alone optimising plant design and planning for maintenance. This paper identifies all the involved stakeholders in an effective mill relining 'team' and gives principles and considerations for each to more effectively achieve the goals within their vital roles. This paper is aimed to be a practical guide for grinding mill designers and planners to more fully exploit the advances in Mill Relining Systems and improve their mill profitability.

Major improvements have taken place in mineral and coal processing in the last decade. The development of nuclear on-line sensors that continuously analyse the material being processed has led to better control of metalliferous mineral processing and increased recovery of valuable minerals. The recent development of on-line techniques for analysis of coal is expected to be of similar Importance. Australian developments in on-line nuclear gauges are reviewed. These include systems for in-stream analysis of mineral slurries with comments on plant operating experience; on-line determination of ash in coal using low energy Y-ray transmission and pair production techniques; in-stream determination of solids weight fraction and ash content of coal in slurries with variable voidage; and on-line determination of moisture in coal, iron in high grade iron ores and sulphur in lead sinter.

Western AustraliaÆs Mining Act 1978 was amended in 2010 to provide for the requirement of a mine closure plan to be submitted to the Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) for approval, as part of a mining proposal application. The mine closure plan must be prepared in accordance with approved guidelines. Guidelines for mine closure plans were developed to assist the mining industry in Western Australia to plan and implement effective closure of mines. The guidelines focus on the application of integrated mine closure principles and industry best practice information on mine closure. This, includes stakeholder consultation, risk based approach, data collection and monitoring, development of completion criteria and financial provision.Due to the potential high level of public interest in the guidelines, extensive consultation with stakeholders was conducted. Large metallurgical complexes are substantial users of energy, water and assets. To improve the effectiveness of energy and assets the quality of the data and events become paramount for real-time operational management. A lack of resources at the local operations and at the enterprise makes it impossible to process the sea of information and many projects have failed. As such, a novel approach for implementation of continuous improvements at the local level and innovations at the strategic level was implemented at all operating plants at Anglo American Platinum. Sixteen concentrators, three smelters and two refinery process systems were integrated to scale the information for manufacturing services at the local and enterprise level. The new capability of an enterprise real-time monitoring and diagnosis software infrastructure was available to implement many business strategies in tandem. Mineral and metallurgical processing knowledge is used to simplify the implementation of the data model. As such, asset monitoring, energy, production and process control management were implemented in an integrated approach reusing the same data but with different context and time horizons to have a standard methodology for local root cause analysis. This paper will highlight a sustainability management approach to change and empower the local and strategic team to collaborate using a new approach for adaptive reporting and condition-based event management and notifications. The results based on the integrated and collaborative team efforts will be presented. Statistics showing that mine rehabilitation is falling behind rates of disturbance continue to be reported in the media. Unfortunately, most reported statistics do not account for the large growth-cycle that mining in Australia experiences, where there are typically significant new disturbances with large portions of these areas not being available for rehabilitation for a number of years. Many commentators assert that better planning is required to ensure that rehabilitation will be able to achieve a safe, stable, non-polluting landform that meets the agreed post-mining landuse.This paper focusses on the revegetation aspects of mine rehabilitation and in particular the matters that need to be addressed in the planning stage so that revegetation success is ultimately able to be demonstrated to regulators and other stakeholders.CITATION:Fox, S D and Swart, P B, 2018. To effectively plan for closure, we must have an end-point in mind. To undertake meaningful rehabilitation, a post-mine land use (or uses) must be known. However, it is becoming more apparent that the end-point or “goal-posts” are shifting - and may continue to do so throughout the life of a mine. As well as being safe, stable and not causing environmental harm, post-mine land uses should always be sustainable, achievable within the given land capability, and they should involve stakeholders in their design and development.The majority of mines in Australia, and around the World, were historically expected to return disturbed land to either native ecosystem or agriculture/forestry practices. However, examples of highly successful final land uses suggest that today’s focus on closure includes not only minimising future liability and impact but also – and importantly – a move towards the creation of economic opportunity (Murphy and Heyes, 2016).CITATION:Durbin, J, 2018. In-seam drilling is conducted mainly to drain coal of gas and/or water prior to development or extraction. The requirements of inseam drilling for gas drainage have mainly surpassed the technical limits of rotary drilling and are mainly being addressed by guided down hole motor drilling, albeit at a higher cost. There is an increasing application of in-seam drilling to detect geological structures or other hazards or their absence in advance of mining to reduce the risks of underground mining. Close collaboration between miners, drillers, geologists, researchers and suppliers over the last four years has seen many advances made to improve the accuracy and reliability of inseam drilling. With such developments will come closer control over the ventilation and safety of future mining under deep gassy conditions, but not without costs. The paper summarises the current applications of inseam drilling, recent technological advances and the next generation survey and geophysical sensing tools which are currently being developed

Among the solutions currently being considered for improving traffic flow in Sydney are the construction of major road tunnels, principally the Eastern Distributor Tunnels, leading from the end of the Cahill Expressway to Drivers Triangle and South of Taylor Square and the Sydney Harbour Tunnel, which incorporates sections of driven tunnel at the northern and southern sides of the harbour. The Eastern Distributor Tunnels, known as Stages 2 and 3 of the Eastern Distributor Scheme comprise: Stage 2 - A south bound two lane tunnel from north of William Street to Driver's Triangle. The southern end includes two Y junctions (locally 3 to 4 lane widths) with exits into South Dowling Street, Anzac Parade and Moore Park Road. Stage 3 - A north bound, two lane tunnel from Taylor Square to Palmer Street just north of William Street. Further details of the Eastern Distributor Tunnels are given in the paper by Baxter, Chappel and Fishburn (1986) which is included in this conference.

The Melbourne Metro project has evolved from the Victorian Transport Plan. MM1 is the second major phase of the proposed separation of Melbourne’s radial railway system, creating a line that will operate independently across the metropolitan region. The central section will run beneath the inner suburbs and the central city. The initial project comprises nearly 8 km of twin bore tunnels, three cavern stations and two cut and cover stations, as well as a dive structure and connections with the existing rail system. This paper describes the development of the geological model, a modification of the rock mass classification system derived during the EastLink project and the influence of the geology on the design of the tunnels and stations for the Department of Transport’s business case.The majority of the tunnelling will be in the siltstone and sandstone bedrock. This material has been extensively folded, sheared and intersected by igneous intrusions. A revised rock mass classification system has been developed for the Melbourne Formation to assist in identifying the important engineering properties of the rock and to rationalise the support types required.The Metro’s tunnel alignment crosses the Yarra Delta deposits in the lower reaches of the Moonee Ponds Creek and again at the Yarra itself near Princes Bridge. These deposits vary in extent and thickness over very short distances. The investigation of these materials has been carried out using conventional drilling techniques in conjunction with sonic drilling methods.Over the central section of the Metro, the positions of the new station are determined largely by transport planning requirements and urban development opportunities. However, the stations, and the tunnels, have been the subject of studies, optimising exercises, and selection processes to arrive at the concept design. This paper describes the influence of the varied geology on the development of the design, and the identification and management of the risks in tunnelling under the centre of Melbourne.

Failings di,posal presents many challenges at metal mines in Peru where the extreme relief yields very little useable land area. These challenges are amplified by other hazards such as the high seismic environment, high rainfall, and frequent debris torrents down the steep hillsides. As a result many mining operations have resorted to in-river disposal of mill tailings. This paper presents a case history of one underground metal mine located in the high Andes mountains of Peru where in-river disposal of tailings has been used for some 30 years. The paper outlines a comprehensive engineering study that was aimed at increasing the utilisation of tailings disposal underground. The scope of this study included modifications to the grinding and flotation circuits to produce a high sulphide and low sulphide tailings for underground and surface disposal respectively: mapping and cataloguing of abandoned stopes for hackfilling: modifications to the existing backfill system to improve icliahility and throughput, and a preliminary evaluation of alternatives Such as silicated and paste fills.

This paper presents a summary of tools and methods used for geotechnical assessments and monitoring systems at block caving mines. A critical review of these tools is given based on the authorÆs experience in block caving operations. The reviewed tools include cavability prediction, fragmentation evaluation, geotechnical monitoring systems, numerical stress analysis and others. Some of these tools have been developed under certain circumstances in particular mines and experience shows that their applications under different geological and mining conditions have often been difficult. Examples from block cave mines are also utilised in this paper to illustrate the importance of the further development of these tools, whilst possible improvements on these tools are also suggested.

Controlling the access of equipment, and people, has become more critical over the last few years for improving productivity and to meet safety responsibilities imposed by legislated obligations to have safety management systems. Hence Mine Site Technologies (MST) has spent the last three years completing the development of the tagging system to meet the mining industryÆs requirements, particularly streamlining access control. The basic tagging system tracks active Tags carried by personnel, or attached to vehicles and equipment, within underground zones. These Tags are detected (read) by Beacons placed strategically throughout the mine. As a Tag, or Tags, go past a Beacon they are read and the information transmitted back to the main database PC. This allows the current whereabouts of personnel and equipment to be known, as well as the history of their movements. The objectives of implementing the TRACKER Tagging System at Oaky No 1 Coal Mine were to: maintain a count of personnel inbye a particular point, and can alarm when a pre-set number is reached (eg the limit imposed by availability of SCSRÆs, etc); maintain a count of vehicles (and vehicle type) inbye a point, and can alarm if when a pre-set number is reached (eg when rated diesel units exceeds the limit for the ventilation present in that zone); manage the vehicle fleet, by keeping track of various vehicles underground better control and dispatch management of the equipment is achieved; keep track of equipment, knowing the location of equipment (such as forks, baskets, pumps, fans, etc) where last used or stored will minimise the risk of losing gear and assist in keeping inventory to a minimum; and locate personnel in emergency situations, by placing read Beacons throughout the mine the location of all personnel can be known in real time so that in the event of an emergency, their withdrawal can be monitored.

"Flotation of nickel sulfide ores are generally constrained by nickel grade and impurity concentrations (notably magnesium and arsenic) in the product delivered to smelters. Being a physical separation process, flotation recoveries and grades are limited by the grade recovery curve of a particular operation, where increasing product grades are invariably associated with lower recoveries. Impurities put further pressure on this relationship, as removal of impurities from the final concentrate is almost always associated with nickel losses.Western Areas Ltd are developing a proposed expansion to its Cosmic Boy concentrator to treat an impurity stream, that is high in nickel and would otherwise report to tails. Through the use of BioHeap® technology Western Areas aims to recover the nickel and discard the arsenic to tailings. This expansion will consist of a biohydrometallurgical plant that leaches the nickel arsenic minerals, removing the arsenic as a stable iron/arsenic hydroxide, while recovering the nickel as a high-grade nickel sulfide product (at approximately 50 per cent nickel). This can then be blended with final concentrate to improve nickel grades and recoveries, while simultaneously reducing impurity levels or used to produce high value products like nickel sulfate.The introduction of a small microbial leach plant may be beneficial to base metal concentrators constrained by impurities or grade.Citation:Fewings, J, Seet, S, McCredden, T and Fitzmaurice, C, 2016.
