During the past decade geopolymer technology has emerged as a possible solution for the effective stabilisation and solidification of waste materials. Amorphous to semi-crystalline geopolymers form by the co-polymerisation of individual alumino and silicate species, which originate from the dissolution of silicon and aluminium containing source materials at a high pH in the presence of soluble alkali metal silicates. It has been shown previously that geopolymerisation can transform a wide range of waste alumino-silicate materials such as fly ash and blast furnace slag into building and mining products with excellent chemical and physical properties, including high compressive strength as well as fire and acid resistance. These chemical and physical properties suggest that geopolymeric matrices derived from waste materials are well suited for environmental and other applications such as the encapsulation of mine tails, the immobilisation of heavy metals and also the fabrication of structural products. The current challenge is to demonstrate that a wide variety of natural Al-Si minerals could serve as potential source materials for the synthesis of geopolymers. Moreover, it should be shown on a large commercial scale that it is possible to encapsulate waste materials into the geopolymeric structure without compromising the chemical and physical properties of the final product for the desired application.

Natural leaching of minerals has been recorded for some two millenia but surprisingly only in recent years has enough been known of the process for any serious design to be made. Copper has been recovered from natural mine waters since about the 17th century but again little progress was made in de- sign procedures until recently. Natural or dump leaching was started as a recovery process late in the 19th century and in the years up to the classic study of Taylor and Whelan in 1943 a series of impirical optimis- ations made it a valuable process for treating low grade or waste material. The biological nature of Sulphide leaching was proven by Colmer and Hinkle in 1947 and since then a large mass of data has accumulated on the microbiology, biochemistry, and response of ores to this form of attack. In spite of this knowledge and the vast amount of pract- ical experience available there are few recorded attempts to present methods of calculation or design procedures that can be used for setting up a leaching process. A framework is given here on which such procedures can be based and indications given of the inherent advantages and limitations of the process,

Sinter plants currently have to use many types of ores with different properties due to the great demand for iron ores, which was driven by the massive growth in Chinese iron and steel industry. On the other hand, the development of iron ore mines is limited and the quality of iron ores is in a tendency of deterioration. Therefore, the quick evaluation of iron ores has become more important for a stable sintering operation. In addition to such a background, the CO2 gas emission should be decreased from sinter plants according to the Kyoto Protocol on reduction in greenhouse gases. The present paper first describes the methods for testing the metallurgical properties of iron ores, which use a small volume of sample mainly focusing on magnetite ore that is effective for reducing CO2 and NOx emissions from sinter plants. The sintering properties of ores are evaluated separately according to each stage in sintering process, that is: heating stage before melt formation, primary melt formation in adhering fines layer of pseudo-particles, and assimilation of nucleus ore particle with calcium-ferrite system melts.Next, the application of the tests to the blending ores is introduced showing examples of the studies on the effective usage of the magnetite ores with Marra Mamba type ores.

An advanced technique for modelling hydrocyclone separation performance has been developed. This technique is based on the combined modelling of hydrocycloning parameters and ævirtualÆ iron ore feed. The virtual feed modelling was performed using a novel (in-house) software package called æRecognitionÆ, which uses data from optical image analysis to classify the particles in certain size fractions according to total iron content and calculates data for every grade class. These data include the average mineral composition and density of every liberation class in every size fraction. This information about every size fraction, representing the ævirtual feedÆ, was input to the mineral processing modelling package USIM PAC. The hydrocycloning process was then modelled for this virtual feed using the Plitt hydrocyclone model. Empirical calibration coefficients for the hydrocyclone model were calculated using an optimisation procedure in Excel. Pilot-scale hydrocyclone beneficiation experiments were performed on an iron ore blend, using different hydrocyclone pressures and per cent solids in the feed pulp. These experiments were modelled and the modelling results were compared with the experimental results. The new modelling approach enables prediction of the recovery of each mineral in the products, calculation of the total iron grade and recovery, and optimisation of iron ore beneficiation using hydrocyclones.

While hard rock tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have an established track record in the tunnelling industry, accurate estimation of TBM performance for each specific project remains critical. Machine performance prediction is required to assist planning activities, including costing and schedule preparation, machine specification and effective planning of maintenance and repairs. In addition, monitoring machine performance during the construction period is required to assess and manage excavation progress, and to achieve optimal advance rates based on specific geotechnical conditions exposed during excavation. TBM performance analysis can also contribute to the development of more accurate performance prediction models for future applications. Rock mass characteristics play a dominant role in machine performance. This paper offers a review of the impact of rock mass characteristics on TBM penetration rates for two specific tunnelling projects. A discussion is provided on the results of statistical analysis of available field data, including geological back mapping, rock properties and measured rates of penetration (ROP). The analysis offers a comparison of the achieved and predicted ROPs to provide a better understanding of the influence of rock mass properties on the performance of hard rock TBMs. A new rock mass adjustment factor is introduced to enhance the accuracy of an existing prognosis model for use in jointed rock masses.

The equity market is now very much within a global village environ- ment, with various exchanges acting as agencies for the big casino. In this predicament, mining companies, who provide the most extensive, but relevant risk assessment information, will be best placed for favoured treatment by potential international investors: But what risk assessment information in summary form can be provided to support a resource/reserve statement? Even more importantly, does "objective" data exist, whose trends will support a resource/reserve state- ment? A prime need of the informed mining investor is to determine whether or not the resource/reserve statement is believable? But more importantly will it be realised? While the implications within the text of the majority of reports on resource/reserves suggests that the estimates are conservative, the record indicates that very few estimates are. In fact, to date, reports claiming to be conservative in respect of the overall grade estimate at a specfic cutoff have not reflected the realised grade at the stated cutoff; it has been more common for the realised grade to be lower than implied by the resource/reserve statement. Further, it is not uncommon for penalty elements to be understated and these components are rarely incorporated within resource/reserve statements.

Three polymers of varying chemistries and molecular weights have been used to depress talc in a model sulfide ore consisting of talc, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. Flotation testing revealed a distinct hierarchy of effectiveness of the polymers in the depression of talc (HP Starch > Polymer-H > Dextrin WY) but a different order of effectiveness for depression selectivity (Dextrin WY > Polymer-H > HP Starch). Adsorption isotherm determinations for the gangue and valuable mineral phases indicate that the differences in selectivity are partially due to adsorbed amount variations, with Dextrin WY adsorbing marginally less on the sulfides than Polymer-H. Contact angle measurements on packed particle beds have revealed that the polymers have differing abilities to reduce the contact angle of talc and the sulfide minerals. An explanation of the observed trends is given in terms of the binding mechanisms of the polymers on the talc and the sulfide mineral phases. Order of addition effects between collector and depressant were also investigated using adsorption isotherm determinations for the polymers in the presence of a pre-adsorbed layer of collector and vice versa. Adsorption of the polymers was not affected by the presence of the collector. Similar results were obtained for the adsorption of collector in the presence of pre-adsorbed layers of polymer.

Hydrothermal mineral deposits are the dominant mineral deposit type in the Cullen Mineral Field, and have been important sources of tin, tungsten gold, silver-lead, zinc and copper. The deposits are mostly in north to northwest-trend- ing shear zones, and are confined to Early Proterozoic contact metamorphosed metasediments or synorogenic to postorogenic granitoids. The distribution of the vein-type deposits with- in the contact aureole defines a district-scale metal zonation of uranium closest to granitoid, through tungsten, copper, tin, silver-lead to gold with increasing distance from granitoid contacts. This zonation probably reflects de- creasing temperatures within the contact aureole during granitoid emplacement, and at the time of generation of a variety of metal-bearing fluids. A magmatic source for some of the metals is indicated by the positive spatial relationship between uranium, tungsten, copper and silver-lead deposits and granitoids abundant in those metals. There is little evidence for any such relation- ship for tin and gold deposits, except for an association of some tin deposits with tin-enriched mafic rocks. Most of the granitoids with anomalous metal values are late stage highly fractionated leuco- granitic phases forming younger plutons peripheral to the main body of the Cullen Batholith, They probably form cusps connected to the main body at shallow depths.

Supercritical fluids are gases compressed to near liquid densities and, as such, have unique properties compared to liquids: low viscosity; zero latent heat; high diffusivity and pressure-dependent, solvation characteristics. These properties are being utilised in new processes and current research is delineating areas where such processes may be applicable to extractive metallurgy. The processes and areas of interest are as follows: Supercritical Fluid Extraction in which substrates are dissolved at high pressure and fractionated at successively lower pressures. Areas of interest include extraction of organic materials for regeneration of activated carbon for the CIP process and for upgrading alumina industry products and, separation of transition metal chlorides. ò Supercritical Water Oxidation in which high pressure gaseous water acts as a medium in which substrates are oxidised while suspended or dissolved. This process may be of use for oxidation of organics in Bayer liquor and oxidation of mine waters etc. ò Supercritical Fluid Reactions where reactions occur in a supercritical fluid medium, particularly when the medium itself is a reactant. This may be of use in treating refractory or carbon-aqueous auriferous ores and in lower-temperature chlorination of transition metal oxides. Research is described which is aimed at chlorination and separation of transition metal oxides by two supercritical operations.

Mining for sand was active in South Delhi during the last four decades disregarding all norms of safety. The aim of the paper is to highlight what is proposed to be done for mining in Delhi. Apart from the damage to the landscape, the earlier operations gave rise to visual pollution to the scenic Delhi area and there is immediate need of land restoration and landscaping. Future mining should be planned so that the resultant land surface completely merges with the topography and gradually assimilates with the green belt. Restoration of old workings, land reclamation and details of plantation in old pit areas are included. The project also provides a demon- stration site to show the impact of eco-development leading to new legisla- tive measures, as it is in the Capital of India itself and therefore more accessible than any other area. What has been suggested for mining is not the latest and the most modern equipments from the Western point of view but the right equipment to meet the specific requirement of the country. Financial projections are included alongwith technical details of the project to show the benefits to the society. It is concluded that eco-development is essential for the mining in the Twenty- First Century.

THE irregularity of the Mount Morgan (Queensland) ore body presents problems other than those only of mining. For irregularity of outline is coupled with irregularity of grade, and the ore varies so rapidly from profitable to non-profitable, and fromhighly siliceous to highly pyritic, that the task of estimating quantities and values of ore reserves is manifestly rendered a difficult one, while the actual disposal of the broken ore demands constant supervision.Four classes of ore are handled. The oxidized ore, cheaply mined and cheaply treated, is obtained by quarrying from the top of the mountain. Below the 315-ft. mine level (measured from the original summit) sulphide ore comes in, and this is divided into siliceous sulphide ore (too siliceous for economic smelting), sulphide ore suitable for smelting, and ore too poor either to be smelted or to be treated by wet process with the siliceous ore. It is with these three latter descriptions of ore that this paper principally deals.Although the output from many stopes in the mine may usually be presumed beforehand to be either smelting or wet-treatment ore, yet it is never safe to take this for granted, and constant assaying is necessary. The ever increasing demand for metals and minerals is putting significant pressure on current mining companies to find more ore. As these companies explore and mine, the future appears to be to go deeper and deeper underground. With depth, however, comes ever increasing costs as infrastructure such as hoisting, ventilation, the movement of workers and materials increase in size and scope. Further, the actual rock mass becomes prone to destruction through rock bursts and the heat generated becomes a major issue resulting in extreme expenditures in cooling plants and some of the biggest air movers in the world. All these issues result in dramatic changes in both capital and operating costs, subsequently making cut-off grades rise. As this trend continues there is an economic limit to how deep one can go, resulting therefore in a severe shortage of accessible ore deposits to mine. This paper discusses the need for larger marine robotics technology and presents the state-of-the-art in current research in underwater tele-autonomy, specifically the development of high bandwidth optical communication networks critical to any future activities (mining, construction, etc) underwater. The Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (CSRP) is undertaking a large research project involving partners from industry, universities and government, which aims to develop the necessary chemical and structural understanding of geopolymer materials made from waste products for them to be used to capture a significant market share of the concrete business for a given industrial region. We are investigating the suitability of a range of soluble silica-bearing waste streams for use as geopolymer concrete feedstocks. In order to utilise a variety of waste streams, either singly or blended, an understanding of the role of secondary metal ions (Fe, Ca, Mg, Ti, etc) in the geopolymerisation process is essential. A range of experimental and analytical techniques is therefore being used to better understand the structure-chemistry-property relationships of geopolymers. Currently, we are investigating geopolymers made from a variety of waste streams (fly ash, kaolinite, red mud, etc) available in the Kwinana Industrial Region, Western Australia. This paper will detail how the basic scientific research underpinning the project is vital if waste streams of varying composition are to be successfully used in a commercial concrete product and the regional synergies required to develop geopolymers from waste streams.

The preamble to the mining Act sets out that such Act is to provide for the encouragement and regulation of mining within the State of Queensland. This paper will attempt to follow the legislative path of such aim and in particular to show what part Mining Wardens play in the administration of the Mining Act.The Mining Act empowers the Governor in Council to constitute Mining Districts and Mining Fields and to appoint any duly qualified officer of the Public Service of Queensland to be a Warden or a Mining Registrar. As a matter of practice Stipendiary Magistrates who hold office in the major centre within a Mining District are appointed Wardens and Clerks of the Court are appointed Mining Registrars. In some districts where there is no Stipendiary Magistrate the Clerk of the Court is appointed an Acting Warden with all the powers of a Warden. Every Warden so appointed is a Warden for the whole State.To achieve impartiality Section 74 of the Mining Act provides that a Warden shall not hold or be entitled (directly or indirectly) to the benefits of any share or interest in a mining tenement or mining venture and provides a penalty of $1000 or imprisonment for six months or both, for contravention of such section.

An account is given of experimental apparatus for generating a short duration high velocity water jet and the effect of its impingement on various rock samples under air or water cover. The penetration was found to be highly dependent upon the rock structure; in general material with closely interlocking grains was resistant.The damage sustained by a stationary sample held close to the jet did not vary greatly whether the sample was in air or confined under a water layer; but when the sample was translated under the jet there was a marked increase in the damage sustained.Some consideration was given to the possible practical application of a water jet for deep hole drilling and an estimate made of the power requirements and transmission losses for such a system.

Podiform chromitites are commonly found in the Moho transition zone to the mantle section of ophiolites, but have been very rarely found from the current ocean floor, even though some ophiolites are considered as a slice of oceanic lithosphere. One of the factors controlling podiform chromitite formation is the chemistry of host mantle peridotite; an intermediately refractory harzburgite is the optimum host for chromitites. This harzburgite represents the most common lithology of the oceanic lithosphere, where the peridotite-melt reaction, which is another condition, is possibly common there. The oceanic lithosphere mantle is thus a good host for podiform chromitites. The apparent rarity of documented oceanic chromitites is solely due to under-sampling of mantle materials from the fast-spreading ridge and the segment centre of slow-spreading ridges. Some ophiolitic chromitites formed not from genuine mid-ocean-ridge basalt (MORB) but from wet MORB due to the situation of typical ophiolites, which formed not at ordinary mid-ocean ridges but at supra-subduction zone spreading centres.CITATION:Arai, S, 2015. The mechanical properties of rock samples of identical lithologicalcomposition may vary significantly due to existence of materialdiscontinuities. Laboratory tests were carried out to determine the effect of material discontinuities on rock sample mechanical properties. The investigations consisted of detecting discontinuities, observing the failure mechanisms during uniaxial compressive strength tests, and analysing of the factors affecting the strength. A non-destructive testing method has been adopted to assist in thedetection of discontinuities. Laboratory testing proved that fractures leading to failures initiated on the detected discontinuities. The location, orientation, size, density and extent of the discontinuities contribute to different modes of failure and these affect the mechanical parameters of rock samples. Four modes of failure were distinguished for hard and brittlecylindrical rock samples. These modes were referred to as simple shear failure, multiple shear failure, multiple fracturing and vertical splitting. To evaluate the effect of discontinuities on mechanical parameters, the ratio of uniaxial compressive to tensile (Brazilian) strength was calculated and analysed for the different modes of failure. It was found that the value of the ratio depended on the mode of sample failure. The lowest value of the ratio was observed for shear mode of failure and the highest for vertical splitting mode of failure.

The works of Metal Manufactures Ltd are situated at Port Kemblam NSW, within a few hundred yards of a deep-water harbour. At present they occupy about 26 acres, and ample provision has been made for future extensions. Rail connection exists between various parts of the Works and the main South Coast Railway, the harbour jetties and the adjacent copper refinery of The Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Co Ltd. A plan of the works is shown in Fig 1.The company was incorporated in March 1916, and commenced production of copper wire in June 1918. Early in 1920, tube manufacture was undertaken, followed by telephone cable mnufacture in 1923. Today the Works consist of five principal sections: Founrdy, Tube Factory, Wire Factory, Cable Factory and Case and Drum Factory. Whilst the last four are engaged in producing the finished materials for despatch from the Works, the first-mentioned is engaged in producing copper, brass, and other non-ferrous billets for use in the Tube and Wire factories. In addition, there are Engineering and Metallurgical Departments supporting the manufacturing sections, and in these, as well as in all other sections of the Works, extensions have been carried out from time to time to provide for increased output and new types of products.

BHP Billiton’s Area C iron ore operation has been in production since 2003. During 2010, below water table mining in the Marra Mamba formation commenced and dewatered ore has been successfully processed through the plant.The ability to mine below water table material increases reserves. Pits can be dewatered using a combination of ex-pit and in-pit bores. Critically it is important to allow suffi cient lead time to dewater. For Area C, in-pit bores yield the most water which presents challenges in every day operations when mining around bores. Operationally there are steep learning curves in obtaining equipment, training personnel and setting up infrastructure. Core risks include lifting, refuelling and maintaining gensets. The pipework, extraction and re-establishment work can be very manual.The challenges include blasting, mining, stockpiling, processing, water balance and disposal. Maximising up time on bores whilst minimising impacts to blast practices have evolved. Blast practices now align bores to the edge of patterns. Protecting bores have evolved from stemming bores with rock and re-drilling to using gas bags which require no drills. Based on moisture and material properties, mining of dewatered material can be categorised into three groups:1. normal,2. sheeting, and3. sheeting and top loading.Ore can go straight to the plant ore to drying pads where it takes between one and three months to drain.Stock management of these piles is important to ensure efficiency of the plant. Rules have been established for blending wet material to maintain feed capacity and some modifications to plants have been made. Dewatering of pits poses a challenge for water use. Initially turkey’s nests were established to capture water and use for dust suppression. As water abstraction has increased methods of management include using exhausted pits for storage and evaporators. Managed Aquifer recharge and use in potable water are being considered. An over arching coordination of the capacity and use are required.Important elements in dewatering include:• capacity models,• capital,• long to short planning,• day to day coordination, and • water level monitoring and balances. IN any assay office it is of paramount importance to keep the men interested in their work; and in order to do this, men on routine work, such as lead, zinc, and sulphur deterrrrinations, slag analysis, etc, should be changed around monthly. This gives some variety and helps to keep a man's interest on his work, so that better work results. It may be maintained that to keep a man on the same class of work indefinitely makes him more expert at his work. This is certainly true; but in assaying, where accuracy is so essential, it is absolutely necessary for a man to keep his mind on the work, and not 'get' into a mechanical method of working. He is also on the alert to discover means for shortening his analytical methods, and his capacity forwork is increased. Another advantage is that the men get a good all-round training, and one is never at a loss to replace a man on any class of work when he is absent from any cause. This tends to smoother and more efficient running of the assay department. In industrial assaying it is often advantageous to have a result quickly, so that it will be of maximum benefit in the running of some part of the plant, In such a case it pays to sacrifice a little accuracy to speed up a method. The shortest method is less costly, and a quick approximate method is all that is required to give the superintendent the requisite information. Time is thereby saved, and the cost is less. In carrying out assaying for any large industrial plant, such as a smelting works, there is always a tendency for superintendents running the different departments to send in more samples for assay than are absolutely necessary when no system of costing is in operation. Some of these samples may involve a lot of work and heavy expenditure, as, for example, the estimation of only one impurity in a sample of refined lead.
